4:00 PM
Welp, I'm going to go get some lunch and go home and apply for some jobs.

Figured out why chat doesn't work for shit from my Firefox 20. Stackexchange doesn't implement HTTPS properly.
If it just broke, that would be fine. But a bunch of the authentication stuff just halfway breaks when you try to use HTTPS.

I've been pretty excited about the annual scripting games. This is only my second Games, but they have been a terrific Powershell learning experience for me. This year it's being run by Don Jones and his gang: http://scriptinggames.org/ http://powershell.org/wp/ Their PHP-based website has already shown to be a little buggy, and I will eat road salt before I enable Java in my browser, so I w

@Adrian It's running Windows, you should thank your lucky stars it works at all

@JoelESalas Windows isn't the problem. Their authentication code is badly written if it breaks specifically when using HTTPS. But I've pointed out the insanity of specifically breaking HTTPS in the authentication process before but nobody there thought the need outweighed the performance benefits.

5:12 PM
I may have just used the hot aisle of the server room as a place to hang a clothes line... which as an auditor I would have definitely been unhappy about, but as a pragmatist I'm helping to balance the humidity level.

and I'm back

@JeffFerland Back to /r/sysadmin with you

@JoelESalas Well I tried to use two trees outside first, but they were all too far apart for my string.

@JeffFerland And drying clothes in your cubicle is uncouth

@freiheit Not enough airflow.

5:21 PM
@JeffFerland That' was pretty much the reasoning from the new guy in our department, before he got scolded...
So he went with the obvious solution: hang it up in his office, but shine a desk lamp on the thermostat, so that there's plenty of air flow.

@freiheit Brilliant

Which froze somebody a couple offices away, since there's only a thermostat every 4th office or so... and got him yelled at again...

@freiheit I just know he didn't stop there. What's next? :)

@Dan He'd come early, loud, and then find out he went through the wrong door?

@WesleyDavid More Brazzers IT issues?

5:24 PM
@JeffFerland I think he used a fan in his office after that...

Holy shit, a recruiter actually sent me a job that I'm a very close fit for.

@Cole World is ending :(

@JeffFerland right?!

@Cole Is it at least in a terrible location you wouldn't want to work at?

My last recruiter email from this morning was for ASIC engineering.

5:25 PM
@freiheit that's what I'm finding out now.
RHEL/VMware/NetApp
Hope it's not my old job, haha.

@Cole In Antarctica!

@JeffFerland I know a guy in town who does IT for an "adult media" company - sounds like rather boring work, honestly.
Boring in that it's just a lot of bulk traffic and caching issues.

I miss working in Linux for 98% of my day. I feel like I've lost a bulk of the knowledge I had from being knee deep in Windows for ~5 months.

@WesleyDavid Except, every once in a while, a 55 gallon drum of lube actually shows up...

@freiheit That's for the lube wrestling championships.

5:27 PM
@WesleyDavid So like Facebook will be?

5:44 PM
Hm looks like the position is with SapientNitro
Who works with Coca Cola, Target, Dunkin Donuts
Their office is near the Prudential Center/Copley Square
I can just take the Commuter Rail directly there without switching trains and it takes the same amount of time as driving (probably shorter because of traffic)
The commuter rail is 1/5th of a mile from my door step as it runs directly behind my apartment.

Q: Voip, what is the best opensourse solution?

VagelismI am in to networks for quit long time but never touched the subject of VOIP. So what do you think would be the best solution with easy accessible web interface, for couple phones that can connect to the voip server, make calles to each other use the standar pstn line and also allow incoming call...

"I am in to networks"...I can only picture him buying a router a drink
2

opensourse
Yeah baby, I'd like to ARP your table.
for "quit a long time"

5:59 PM
So if Centos has actually deleted netstat in favor of ss, why haven't they fixed their network interfaces scripts yet, to eliminate the abomination of aliased interfaces?
They added IPV6ADDR_SECONDARIES, why couldn't they simply add IPV4ADDR_SECONDARIES?

@Cole My broadcast you long time.
2

@Zoredache which release ? 6.4 seems to have it

sharepoint can burn in hell, im done

@MattBear Poop.

@WesleyDavid no poop today.... just complete rage and fustration

6:03 PM
@MattBear Ragepoop.

@Iain no idea really, I just read about it on superuser a while back. I don't actually use Centos.
Are you saying 6.4 has IPV4ADDR_SECONDARIES?

@Zoredache no it still has netstat

@MattBear congrats

Ah, I don't really care one way or the other. I am almost certain i saw someone say it was gone though. I am more annoyed about the lack of support for configuring multiple addresses on a single interface the correct way that doesn't result in wonky behavior.

6:07 PM

@WesleyDavid They call me the "MAC dAddy"

morning

@David not in MY timezone, mister!

@David 12:24, Caliboy.

1421, hippies

6:21 PM
@WesleyDavid 14:21 - check your time server.

@voretaq7 11:26 California time. I looked at my desk phone that is on Mountain time for my main remote office. DERP

@WesleyDavid you're still off by 3 minutes. Fix your time server...

@voretaq7 I'm so cool I warp time.

@WesleyDavid We always knew you were a little warped

ATT's time is all messed up too. My iPhone is getting faster and faster ahead of everyone else.

6:25 PM
@David morning, screw all these guys, they are wrong

my iPhone says 14:25 (agrees with the desktop)
my desk phone says 14:30 but the NTP client on these phones sucks balls

@voretaq7 Well there's your problem right there... It should be sucking time down from nist.gov

@gWaldo You can't trust the government with your time! Wake up sheeple

@gWaldo absolutely not - it should be sucking time from a local stratum-2 server.

Yo yo...any suggestions for "documentation" software, besides Office?
I'm looking for something that would have Groups (say "Servers") and inside there other groups if needed. Then in there, individual servers with various fields and then places to add attachments to save with the item. Something that I can use to track detailed info on everything in one place as opposed to searching Sharepoint or similar for various Office files.

Anyone?

6:28 PM
@TheCleaner Sharepoint or another Wiki is a common solution

@TheCleaner That sounds like a good fit for a wiki to me.

my solution is Lyx and git

@TheCleaner You need asset tracking

@TheCleaner If you manage your environment in a CM tool, you get that for free
but I recommend against Office files

@JoelESalas asset tracking is the other half yeah

6:29 PM
@ewwhite got another one btw if you need

Automate, and either database or plaintext files

@MattBear WERD
still morning

@voretaq7 I'm awake aren't I :)

yeah, ok...so we don't have Sharepoint.. Asset Tracking/CM, yes...but which tool?

6:31 PM
Chef

@Chopper3 Your servers are going to do something clever in response.

Puppet
Scripting

like... idunno, catch fire

@voretaq7 just a licence code edd wanted

6:32 PM
@Chopper3 piracy makes the servers... aw who the fuck am I kidding as long as they're in a cool, dark place the servers don't care what you do.

We haven't had enough dog balls in here.

@gWaldo - I'm management now...I don't know anything technical anymore...so learning Chef and Puppet are out the window...I'm looking for semi-turnkey windows based.

@WesleyDavid says the cat

@TheCleaner LOL - That's a good one!

6:34 PM
@voretaq7 these are actually spares that aren't being used - part of the deal with have with HP that gets us such great prices is that every server has to be bought with iLO and SAAP (R6) licences - just part of the deal, so I had one of my guys find some licences that aren't being used as he needed them

erlang-poolboy.x86_64 : A hunky Erlang worker pool factory
wow

@Chopper3 THINK HOW THE LICENSE FEELS! Being traded around the IT community like a cheap harlot!
wait, are these Microsoft licenses? Expensive harlot!

@TheCleaner Such a magical rainbow-spouting, skittles-farting unicorn does not exist.

@voretaq7 no, HP ones, but the same is true

Configuration management requires effort, but I assure you that it's worth it.

6:37 PM
@Chopper3 Oracle licenses are the real top-end prostitutes. Thousand dollars an hour but everyone says it's worth it

@gWaldo - hmmm...I sense an outsourcing opportunity. :)

@TheCleaner The other thing to do is learn WMI and a scripting language (really not that hard) for at least the documentation / asset-tracking

@voretaq7 So, then, if my bosses pay Oracle and I have to be tortured by it...

If you're on Windows, WMI is an awesome resource for getting (and setting) information.

@voretaq7 I always wondered what a $1000 an hour prostitute would be like...

6:39 PM
@gWaldo And then determine which vendors/models store which attributes in which classes. Win32_BIOS? Win32_BaseBoard? Ah, whatever, I'll take any serial number. :)

The asset tracking is fairly easy. WMI, etc. isn't the problem. I'm referring to things like a personal KB to go along with those assets (like password files, instruction sets, change control docs, etc.

@jscott Pick your poison...

@freiheit They hired you a fancy dominatrix. You should thank them.

@TheCleaner It sounds like you're asking for "IT-Best-Practices-In-A-Box, Turnkey Edition"

@voretaq7 Couldn't they at least get a pretty one, instead of this ugly monster? sheesh!

6:42 PM
Lenovo can't even keep it straight between their ThinkPad/ThinkCentre lines. Love when a string literally contains "To be filled by O.E.M" or "INVALID" . Thanks guys.

@freiheit Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Oracle be holdin' your money - therefore they think everything is beautiful.

@gWaldo - sort of...but more of a cross between TrackIT, Spiceworks, a Wiki, and Lastpass. :)

don't forget "turnkey", and I'm assuming "integrated"
If you find a vendor who is selling something that promises all of those things, it's probably a vendor who by no means you should ever buy from. Like CA or HP.

We are now transitioning the #stackoverflow and #stackexchange databases over to 10gb connections, should a be transparent operation

@gWaldo So, you're suggesting I shouldn't plop down a few hundred thousand for this and this? But they promise holistic, too!

6:52 PM
@StackExchange We who have said "The should be no impact to Production" Salute you.
@freiheit LOL. The fact that companies like CA and HP have not been banned from writing software yet amazes me.

Wonder how long I'll be on hold with PearsonVUE

@StackExchange #yolo #colo #downtime #famouslastwords
3

This should not be customer facing
We expect no impact on the production network
None of this will be visible on the frontend
This has been thoroughly tested and we expect no user-visible impact.
Any impact will be negligible

I wish I could star all of those

I think I've said all these things in the past, with varying degrees of correctness.
Also: 10gb to the server? You're doing it wrong!

7:03 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker wrong how?

You're putting too much pressure on a single system.

Yeah, then it starts changing...
The users shouldn't notice any impact
Only certain users would notice any impact
The downtime will be limited to the typical maintenance window
The site will be back online *soon*
We believe we can recover the majority of site content
We apologize for the 3 weeks of downtime while we ensure the security of our systems... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Network_outage

And having many 10gb connected servers actually using 10gb puts enormous pressures on the switches and their interconnects. 40G? 100G? Expensive!

@DennisKaarsemaker that very much depends on the system
also normal operations probably aren't the only thing that have to go over the link (replication, backups, etc.)

@DennisKaarsemaker Didn't they say their Database server had a couple FusionIOs in it? and 256GB of ram or something pretty large?

7:05 PM
@voretaq7 can't think of a single system that I wouldn't rather split into more systems to avoud this.
@Zoredache meh, we have those too. Still no 10gb connectivity.

@ChrisS I was working for the company doing the backend of Mortal Kombat when that happened.

Scalability 101: scale out, not up.

I'm trying to find the website (social network maybe?) that had a HD failure only to find out their "verified" backup tapes were all blank - think they threw in the towel and quit too

Our PS3 graphs were rising like the XBox ones, and then Tanked!

scaling up doesn't scale. There's nothing beyonf 10g that's reasonable.

7:08 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker I'd generally go bigger before broader with DBs. Especially when you consider the locality of access (new data is hot) and how that would influence the clustering algorithms.

@DennisKaarsemaker Well lets get George, Kyle, or someone into the channel and ask them to defend their decision.

40 and 56Gb IB is on the edge of "reasonable"

@ChrisS everything is eventually on the edge of reasonable
there was a time when gigabit was ZOMG SO KERSPENSIVE, now it's the de-facto standard.

@voretaq7 good sharding shards hotness too :)

@voretaq7 I didn't say eventually. And depending on your circumstances it is reasonable now!

7:09 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker there's "good sharding" for MSSQL?

@voretaq7 Good is relative, therefor there must be an opposite

You can implement sharding yourself.

@ChrisS well in 5 years I expect 100Gbit to be "on the edge of reasonable"

Just store odd questions in a different replication chain from even ones for instance.

@DennisKaarsemaker . . . Which scales for N | N=2 -- IOW "Data Management is HARRRRRD!"

7:11 PM
@voretaq7 Good!!

giant man-eating server with a pipe the size of the mississippi river is much easier :-)

@voretaq7 until your river overflows and you can't stop it. Designing to scale out is harder to start with but scales better.

@DennisKaarsemaker agreed, but that's incumbent on needing to scale out

@voretaq7 isn't stack exchange OMGGROWINGSOFAST?

7:14 PM

and frankly if SE needs to scale out the solution is much simpler: Busy sites get their own DB (that should buy you a good 5-10 years, by which point either everyone will have left to move to something new, or something with better sharding technology will be apparent and ready to take over for MSSQL :-)

@DennisKaarsemaker not really -- they're launching a lot of new sites, but they're not launching ZOMG Stack Overflow volume

@ChrisS wow.... that cat looka likea Gollum

7:16 PM
What..happened here

@DennisKaarsemaker mew

@Cole cats and databases

Catabases?

WHY WON'T THIS PERSON STOP TALKING TO ME AND HANG UP AFG;DLKSDJFGLJKOALDKFGJHQAE;IRUHGD;FLKGJSDF

Is this what happens when I look away?!
@WesleyDavid <click>

7:17 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker catabases?

@voretaq7 I SAID IT FIRST

Databeasties
@Cole BUT VORETAQ7 IS SO MUCH HOTTER THAN YOU

Q_Q

@DennisKaarsemaker that's cuz its summer here.
hawt

7:19 PM
So, how does SE make money?
All from careers 2.0, or are there other things?

There's ads when you have a low-rep

low rep and no adblock

@gWaldo There's ads everywhere with low rep - just on the side of everyone else

then again, given the implied IQ of some of the askers, adblock isn't likely to be too widely used

@DennisKaarsemaker ads and careers
and tag sponsorships
@DennisKaarsemaker even the no-adblock not-logged-in version of SE sites is pretty light on ads
I mean they're obviously there, but they're not screaming talking dancing flashing ads

7:23 PM
I'm quite hypocritical on ads. I hate them so I have adblock installed. But if everybody did, I'd be out of a job quite quickly :)

MOAR MARKEE!

@DennisKaarsemaker I don't adblock, but when a particularly egregious ad comes up I determine what provider serves it and their new IP address becomes 127.0.0.1
so I basically see everything except the ads that talk.

browsing for porn is undoable without adblock. Too many pop-ups, pop-unders, pop-cherries and talking ads.
2

@DennisKaarsemaker Your Perversions - Let Me Star Them For You.

7:38 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker I believe adblocks will become as widespread as spam filters over a short time frame, since ads became quite a pain to look at lately and are increasingly annoying, seriously disturbing browsing.

@syneticon-dj "will become"?

Anybody remembers the time before popup blockers were commonplace?

I think they're already close to being there.

@voretaq7 not quite, they need to be integrated into the browsers and be enabled by default - but this only should take 1-2 another years

@syneticon-dj I think a lot of Linux distros ship with an ad blocker by default. I'd be surprised if it takes 2 years.
I don't believe IE will ever ship with an ad blocker by default though - MS has too much to lose there.

7:41 PM
Let me rephrase this: they should be integrated into Internet Explorer and enabled by default
Nah, they probably just would be the last to do it

@syneticon-dj yeah - that will never happen.
the business communities that rely on ad revenue are also microsoft's biggest buyers
so the only way MS is going to introduce an ad blocker is if something else replaces ad revenue for the majority of their market base

Ugh. Ate McDonalds. Now shitting in data center bathroom.

@ewwhite what have we learned?

Lesson of the day: "No iPads in the shitroom."

@ewwhite SISO.

7:48 PM
EmbarrASSed. As in, it's good that there are no chairs in the data center. I can't sit.

"Doctor, Doctor. I feel like a pair of curtains." "That's the least of your worries. You're HIV positive."

@chopper3 the SAAP key worked.

@DennisKaarsemaker HA!

@syneticon-dj iPads are the leading cause of hemorrhoids

I should take pix of this data center.

7:53 PM
@ewwhite but please, not the bathroom.

@Cole why not?

Ugh. Ate McDonalds. Now shitting in data center bathroom.

@Cole If you think about it, taking pictures of your crap is kinda like the natural flow of Tumblr / Pinterest food shots.

@DennisKaarsemaker is taking over the star wall!
@WesleyDavid the world is not ready for Instapoop.

@Cole I could start posting pics from /r/poop if you want.

7:56 PM
@Cole of course it is

@ewwhite Take a pic of where you are right now. Don't even think just snap and upload.

There's a poop reddit? Why am I surprised about this?

@WesleyDavid all set
Although, I would rather see a poop than a booger.
I have a very weak stomach
my girlfriend is all like LOL LOOK AT THIS BROKEN BONE/GROSS INFECTION/ETC. I'm like BRB VOMITING

@Cole So that picture of the cat eating his own snot would probably not be a friendly thing for me to post?

On a side note... I recently registered poopfrancis.com - any ideas?

7:59 PM
@WesleyDavid I saw that, and had to block it. I started to get that vomit feeling in my throat

@Cole RALPHLARGLEBLURBLURBLURRRR...
@MathiasR.Jessen ...for why?

@WesleyDavid I love the term "ralph" for vomiting.
Jenna always says "Oh Cole is that going to make you RALPH LAUREN everywhere?

hmm road pizza

@WesleyDavid No idea... it was just my instant reaction when the new pope chose his papal name

you mean franciscus :P

8:03 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker since poop is not a latin word, his anglicized name seemed like the better choice ;)

@MathiasR.Jessen puppisfranciscus.vc

@DennisKaarsemaker not bad, not bad

@MathiasR.Jessen use it to proxy to vatican.va, but deface the site a bit?

@Zoredache Maybe poop a little on the site...

Maybe, you could start by a simple upside down. ex-parrot.com/pete/upside-down-ternet.html

8:09 PM
Or feed it through Lingua::Bork

@ewwhite Dude you make like a million dollars, you couldn't find a Tender Greens instead of a McDonald's?

So my manager asked me to come see him when I had a free moment. Then asked me if I was happy.

@Cole How are your lying skills

@JoelESalas I said I was fine, just a little bored lately.

8:11 PM
He said "oh okay"

Lingua::Bork ftw :)

I only eat McDonalds when I hate myself.

I made the choice of getting some Chicken McNuggets last summer. They've come a long way.

@Cole "Selling Buicks" is a fun term for puking. 'Cause when you hurl, you say "BBUUIICKKKKKKK..."
@ScottPack BABY.

@WesleyDavid hahaha I've never heard that

8:18 PM
That and the McGriddle. That thing is the foulest, most terrible thing that has ever been invented. And yet I an incapable of not drooling over the very idea of it.

I ate Burger King today, I immediately regretted that decision.
I'm an emotional/stress eater

I ate free hot dogs today. I'm sure to regret that decision soon...

@WesleyDavid I need to link you something. Open your secure channel.

@ScottPack Is "open your secure channel" a euphemism for something dirty? It should be.

@freiheit It's not, but it certainly could be.

8:26 PM
Open your secure channel. Incoming message tube.
