@Iain I prefer the stronger beers as they tend to taste more delicious and I also can't physically fit that much volume in my body cavity
@Iain That'd be tough here in CA, since West Coast IPAs typically are 6.5-7.5%...
@freiheit The important thing about IPA is the hoppyness
@Iain Yes. Needs plenty of bittering hops and flavoring hops. Generous dry-hopping wouldn't hurt.
@JoelESalas I prefer the lighter styles, the red/ruby/dark beers just don't work for me
@Iain If I recall the calculations correctly, you get more bittering out of a given amount of hops if there's more malt in the boil. And more malt in the boil translates to more alcohol in the final product (up to about 8%)
^^ That's a really tasty locally made 4.65% IPA. They have to use a lot more hops than their regular IPA, which still tends to taste hoppier
00:15
I'm about ready to offer a cash bounty to anyone who can explain/fix that crap.
FreeBSD 9.1-Prerelease amd64 - nVidia MCP55 Chipset/ATA
The peaks and valleys are a different specific pattern each time, but the trend can be repeated every time like clockwork.
@ChrisS What's the scale on the bottom?
Time in seconds
I should note, I don't have a graph (will generate one later), but attaching the same drive to another controller (there's a LSI SAS controller in it too) yields a flat 140MBps
@ChrisS You realize that controller is ancient, right?
@MichaelHampton So is the rest of my home server.
I don't remember having problems like this before upgrading from 8.x to 9.x
00:25
No SMART info worth noting; no bus errors/timeouts/etc
@ChrisS So you're looking at design flaws in the hardware (not likely) or driver bugs (likely).
@MichaelHampton Yes. It's either a hardware or software problem.
@ChrisS I seem to remember hearing years ago that some of the early nvidia motherboard chipsets had various issues with the SATA controller, but I can't seem to find it now (it's too old, I guess). If it were me, I'd probably keep the cash and buy a new motherboard with it.
@MichaelHampton I'll probably just buy another LSI SAS controller to put in it... annoying at any rate
Ok serious question folks. I need a decent-ish server/VPS somewhere out in the wide hoary world of the Internet.
Can anyone recommend a host?
00:31
I did learn from this that I am not going to buy HP's little entry level micro towers.
ugh heartburn hotel over here after that burrito
@JoelESalas How decent do you want?
@MichaelHampton 600/annum at most
@JoelESalas 600 what?
@MichaelHampton US Amurkin dollars, aka God's Currency. Right now I'm paying $120/annum
00:34
@JoelESalas Aha. Well then. Many people swear by Linode.
There are several other places I could mention, too. :)
@MichaelHampton Those seem to work quite nicely for the 3-10 person workplace, or as a small branch office server. But for heavy lifting, they're not recommended or meant for it.
@ChrisS Yeah. While Googling around for your question, I found out that one older model of those towers used that same nvidia chipset.
Ah; wasn't sure where the reference came from. Makes sense now.
You sure you don't want a new home server now? :)
I'm sure you can get ewwhite to MacGyver up something for you.
@JoelESalas I get that sometimes too. Seems to get stuck in loops every once a while, especially after several hours of listening to the same station. Smacking my phone with my penis for a few minutes usually fixes it, or in situations where I can't give the phone a good penis-smacking, changing the station for a while helps too.

@HopelessN00b I think the problem with Pandora is the music-associating algorithm. It's not interested in finding you new songs SIMILAR to what you like, it's interested in finding The Perfect Song, which by definition is convergent on 3-4 songs
Aha, so that's why I stopped using Pandora after two hours and never went back.
Wow, that's just totally the opposite of my experience with it. Weird.
Guess it's naptime for me. Patching all night tonight. As a salaried sucker. Woo, unpaid server patching in the asscrack-hours of the morning. Does life get any better?
@HopelessN00b Well at some point you'll want to do that on the clock as a consultant
@HopelessN00b Oh shit, did they force you to go FTE?

Q: Subnet calculator for MS Excel

MartinI quite often use the handy subnet calculator here: http://www.subnet-calculator.com/ Which I find very useful. However, does anyone have details/a link for a version of this that offers similar functionality but is in an excel spreadsheet. I could then include it in a worksheet and I wouldn'...

Hmm, that should be possible,
Hack. Even without calculation you could just use a table. Or maybe 2 tables for the 10. and 192.168 ranger, which seems 90% of what is used these days

Q: List Questions - What to do with new ones

Chris SA "list question" recently came up. This is not asking for a list of options which satisfy as set of requirements, that's a "shopping question". They were originally allowed on SF, and still are on SO. We have been locking old questions with the "Historical Significance" message, so we can still...

@MichaelHampton No, I'm spending all my extra money on this workstation... Need to find someone good with Eagle to design me a bifurcation board now; or just learn Eagle myself.

@ChrisS! Y U MAKE WAVES?! :-P
While I think we get too much crap on SF I feel much of it is On-Topic and an awful lot of potentially good Questions are Off-Topic... This one strikes me as the latter.

A lot of my favorite questions are old stuff that is "no longer on topic."

@HopelessN00b what is your actual job>
What about the fact that all these kind of questions get upvoted to the moon, even if 5 people do decide to close them? Looks to me like the community is split or schizophrenic on the issue.

And honestly, the most useful questions on here are that kind of subjective, a-little-too-broad, closed or "should be closed" that we (for whatever reason) look the other way on or reopen after being closed via voting.
@Cole Depends who you ask, but I'm mainly a Windows/ESX sysadmin. With a little networking, some engineering/architecture and some assistance to the helldesk thrown in to keep things interesting and prevent me from liking my job too much.
@HopelessN00b They're not bad questions they just don't really lend themselves to good answers - just like best practices, there should be one, but there isn't because everyone has their own.
17:28
I just showered just to get back in pajamas. I'm an adult.
In my defense, I'm hungover as fuck.
@Cole Do the pajamas have feet?
@freiheit no, I wish
@Iain Well, that's where the SE philosophy is wrong, frankly. The questions that are most useful, or useful to a wider audience are inherently broad. Questions with One True Answer that's objective are generally only applicable to one specific situation. You want questions and answers that apply more broadly, you're looking for questions that are more broad, by definition, and by extension of that broadness, are also subjective.
Which are better and which are worse, should be pretty easily determined by the votes on each.
18:20
@Ward quick spin this afternoon app.strava.com/activities/32638501
@HopelessN00b Like I said in the comments on that meta question, I think we need to change the test to "Can I write a good answer that will have long-term value?" rather than "Is there One True Answer" / "Is this just asking for a list-of-things?"
@voretaq7 Yup, completely agreed.
@HopelessN00b That said, I'm generally opposed to list questions (most of them SUCK), and @Iain has a point about broken windows
if the "list question" still fails the "Good Subjective / Bad Subjective" tests it's a shit question, and should not be allowed.
18:43

@Cole yes, you're going to have to go through TSA screening. The Nightmare Continues
(Fuck the TSA!)
@voretaq7 I've done that before.
In Boston they really don't give a fuck. When I was in NC all the TSA people just stood there after I came out of the backscatter. I was like "...ok"

@MarkHenderson Great start to a Monday morning
@Iain haha well this is my last week before 2 weeks of christmas break, so I expect it to be horrible. Will make the "Fuck youuuuuuu" middle finger I'll give everyone on Friday so much sweeter
@TomO'Connor It's about time.
@MarkHenderson So do you find Christmas at the height of summer strange, or do you find it strange to be in the middle of winter?
@MarkHenderson sweet
@MichaelHampton no, I did not.. and the comment you gave me on the answer made me think that I was answering stuff I had zero business answering.. so I deleted it
20:54
@ScottPack I've always had christmas at the height of summer, so as far as I'm concerned it's awesome
@ScottPack I saw some photos earlier from our relies in Brisbane, they went on a Christmas motorcycle gift run - seeing people wearing t-shirts riding bikes with Christmas decorations on them in bright sunlight was weird
@MarkHenderson How do you find evergreens to chop down?
@MarkHenderson Are they poisonous as well?
@Iain I'm sure you must find sunlight strange. The rest of it odd as well.
@ScottPack we had some clear skies today and I went for a spin
I took the motorcycle out today too :)
@ScottPack We have pine trees?
21:01
went and acquired a delicious serving of bacon at my favorite breakfast spot
Well actually most people have plastic trees, but I prefer pine trees
My firewall has uptime of 1,033 days... I feel sad rebooting it.

Yeah, it is... I'm taking it to 8.43
cool... some changes in NATing and IPSec configuration between those versions, FYI
@Iain Still nothing but rain in the forecast...
So, I don't work with any networking at work currently....do you think it's possible to get (and retain the info) my CCNA without hands on?
21:10
@SpacemanSpiff I'm not concerned.
@Cole - CCNA covers a lot of material that you won't use day in day out
you can get it, but you won't retain it without hands on
i mean, some of it overlaps right?
@SpacemanSpiff well yeah, I think it'd be beneficial to get a more solid understanding of networking at this point in my career. Really seems to be the stopping point for more Senior level positions.
@Ward looks like I may be able to get out on Tuesday evening too :) the rest of the week is wet though :(
@ewwhite got the flash/mem to do that?
@pauska nope.
but it'll run.

I thought it would bail when it tries to apply the image
but ok

@Cole CCNA is prereq to every Cisco cert (at least it used to be that way), so it's a solid choice
@pauska I figure. Might do MCSE 2012 first, bang that out quick, then RHCSA - then CCNA.
I have a lot of time on my hands, I'd like to put it to good use.
@ewwhite well that's a pretty scary warning.. why aren't you just running 8.2 then?
perhaps
CCNA is a great foundation for everything though
21:17
I'd take CCNA before those, but ok
its amazing how clear certain things become once you have a basic routing/switching foundation
@SpacemanSpiff yep, CCNA opened my mind quite a bit when it comes to dynamic routing and so on
@pauska I figure I can bang out the MCSE faster than CCNA.
and the when you get into things like setting up vmware clusters or iSCSI or anyhting like that... while you cruise on by, the other people fall on their face
because they have no idea how a vlan trunk actually works
@SpacemanSpiff that's what I'm looking for. Some clarity on that stuff. I can kinda stumble through it, but I'd rather be able to know exactly what's doing what
21:19
or why you subnet, or what multi-pathing and LAG hashing does
@Cole Why the hurry? CCNA teaches you alot of stuff that MCSE probably doesn't teach you, but will assume that you know.. the old MCSE 2000 infrastructure exam was a nightmare for those who didn't have a solid TCP/IP understanding
@pauska because the first time I ever encountered it, I was in a bind... so now I know that it actually works.
@pauska Because I hate my job, and I need to find something more suiting. I don't have a degree, or any recent certs so both of those have been a stopping point for me.
@ewwhite The RAM usage on our 5510's are very low (running 8.4), so maybe the extra RAM is needed for those extra sec modules or content scanning..
I remember when my first troubleshooting step was "can you ping it" and now it's "is the MAC address in the switching table?"
21:20
@SpacemanSpiff my first is still ping (since I know that we don't have any firewalls blocking it, I -love- icmp and let it fly through everything) :)
If you put forth some serious effort, and I mean lab shit out with GNS3, and study a couple hours each night, you could take the CCNA exam within 4-5 weeks
It's really not that hard, and almost every single thing you learn can be applied to other things.
It teaches you the foundations of the layered models of networking which apply to everything else.
@SpacemanSpiff I have a shit ton of time now. I took Cisco 1&2 in college, too. I work 8-430, home by 445. So, I have a TON of available time.
Okay then, pirate the PDFs and study guides and get it done :)
Hell... I still need to get mine :)
@SpacemanSpiff I just think it'll help me to grasp concepts easier and also my job search
It won't hurt, that's for sure.
If you like doing Microsoft stuff, it would probably behoove you to get some Exchange / System Center / Hyper-V solid experience on your resume
21:28
@SpacemanSpiff I have some Hyper-V and Exchange. But never used System Center. I do a mix of Linux/Windows.
That's the problem - my skill set is extremely broad and only knee deep in things.

This whole Google ditching ActiveSync thing perturbs me some...

Any of you ever had an SSD overheat?
We had an aircon failure and everything shut down as it should have, but I have two SSD's that are now totally dead. I can only assume they overheated or melted or someshit.
It was almost 40 degrees outside when the aircon failed, which I don't think helped the situation
(thats 104 to you weirdos)
@MarkHenderson I had an SSD die in my home machine when I rebooted to install updates
@Iain Fun ;)
There were I thnik SLC OCZ's - about 18 months old, so that didn't help I suspect
@MarkHenderson surprising, there was absolutely no warning - mine was an OCZ vertex 2 just about 12 months old - they replaced it without quibble in less than a week
@Iain thats good. I have no proof of purchase for these drives so let's hope they will still replace them
If not, well they're only 60gb drives so they should be cheap to replace
@MarkHenderson I think I had to supply proof of purchase - fortunately I bought it from Amazon so I just printed the stuff off there
22:53
Shit a brand new one is only $90
Probably not even worth bugging the accounts girl for a receipt
23:09
Done and done, should be here by this afternoon
@MarkHenderson I always thought the term "aircon" was primarily an East Asian thing
@JoelESalas shrug technically Australia is in Asia, and we get invited to all the east-asia conferences, but it's a bit of a no-no to claim we're an asian country
A bit like how Israel gets to take part in Eurovision
(which, every year, my mother-in-law gives a lecture about)
/yawn
@Cole Keeping you awake, are we?
@MarkHenderson Luckily, my mother in law doesn't speak enough english to lecture me.
23:17
@MarkHenderson haha I had a rough night last night, still recovering.
@Ward my almost mother in law, didn't speak english well enough to even really talk to me. Worked out well :)
@Ward Haha my mother in law is a wonderful person, but just don't get her started on Eurovision
@Cole Mine won't shut up. We were on a 45 minute car drive last week and she talked non stop the whole way
Haha my ex fiance's mom was Filipino
@Cole Mmmm Filipino, tasty
23:34
@MarkHenderson Too bad banning firearms wouldn't do any good either. Banning prescription of psychotropic drugs on an out-patient basis would be a good start though.
@Adrian I see mixed results. We banned automatic weapons and assault rifles and went from 18 mass shootings in 15 years to 0 in the next 15
Or perhaps, don't let people on psychowhatever drugs buy high powered assault rifles
@MarkHenderson Automatic weapons have been so difficult to get here in the US that there's been no incidents involving legal ownership of them in decades.
What we found here was that mass shootings went to 0 after gun control, but small-arms crimes pretty much stayed the same
Did I miss some piece of news?
So handguns, etc even though they're impossible to buy legally, still seem to hang around a lot
23:37
@MarkHenderson BTW, Assault rifles generally use heavy low power rounds.
@MarkHenderson I think you're confusing automatic with semi-automatic.
@Adrian Well my point wasn't about what was said, but rather who said it
Maybe we should just arm all the schoolchildren.
@MarkHenderson Ah. I don't trust anything that man says. Grade A asshole.
@Adrian fwiw Australians tend to agree
@Hennes There are programs in several states to properly train teachers in just such scenarios. I'm of mixed opinions about that.
23:40
Malcolm Turbull is also the man that a lot of Australians wish were our prime minister as well, but that's not particularly relevant either
Arm the teacher which gets bother by small pests day in and day out.
@Hennes "Barbie's first handgun!"
Hmm
China style population control, but improved?
@Hennes Requires more practice than teachers have the time to commit it. That said, requires more practice than most cops bother to put in.
@Hennes China's most effective population control is "Cut corners in public infrastructure! Building/Bridge/Stadium collapse and kill thousands at once! Problem solved!'
23:41
I know that if I had a gun at school I would have used it. Too many bullies in school.
I still want to find some of them. In case they die I can go out and piss on their graves.
And that is decades after school. So rage has had time to cool off.
But I still dream about doing that at least once per month
@Hennes I think you might want to talk to someone about that level of rage after so many years
I used to have rage like that over two people in particular, but a friend convinced me it wasn't healthy to be having murder-dreams 7 years after highschool, especially considering I moved states and will never see any of them again
After about 3-4 hours of professional counseling I was cured
I think it is standard rage for a quite large section of people who go to school.
(fwiw I didn't get an invite to my 10-year highschool anniversary either. My friends did, I think most of them set fire to their invites, but I obviously wasn't worth the effort of spending 2 minutes finding out where I live. That or because I'm not on facebook. But I'm not bitter, I just wanted to piss on the invitation)
@Hennes Standard rage perhaps, but not healthy, not after that long
I think the school system over here needs some reforming.
Too many mean bullies. And slow (read boringly slow) lessons.
