I'm on the fence. I thought Solaris was on the up and coming when OpenSolaris was released; partial confirmed when it survived as Illumos and OpenIndiana.

@ChrisS If I am not mistaken, the whole Illumos/OI thingy is heavily driven and paid by Nexenta. I suspect that the directions are there but simply nobody knows how to fly the plane.

I have an .exe in a network share that I'm running every time a user logs in, and I dont know if I should load it via the mapped drive or through the network path.
@pauska this whole DOS booting business is freaking me. I wonder why so many manufacturers are incapable of creating a working update process without the need to mess around with a custom-crafted DOS boot disk.
@Cole would not a single "mapped" drive to \\domain\dfsroot be sufficient?
That's semantics, drive letters are ingrained and your example is just a layer on top of the drive controller. How many places can you use a non letter format?
I don't mind drive letters on the local system, I just don't like mapping network drives via GPO or even worse a batch script with a bunch of "net use" commands in it that's deep in the bowels of Sysvol and some random GPO applies it to a particular set of users and I dunno man they just feel clunky and outdated and it's just a pain to administer
@Dan you can use UNCs. And if you need to give your users a consistent navigation experience, there are things like Explorer Favorites, symbolic links and Dfs.

I've never had an issue with drive letters and I don't really know why you guys are struggling, tbh. Users get them, they work and are easy to configure

@Dan which apps? I have not seen one for years. Also, Windows is pretty much the only system left around with "Drives". And it has to struggle with the concept all along - attach a all-in-one cardreader and see half of the available drive letter space being reserved for a single device. Have users with locally-attached "X" drives and wonder why your network drive mapping is not working. There is all sorts of trouble just waiting to jump on you

@MarkHenderson Yeah, that might cause us a problem, given that we have scads of blade hosts for our VMs. Probably cheaper to do it the stupid, headachy way and mostly use Standard Edition windows everywhere.
@MarkHenderson Well, on the one vCenter instance I'm looking at, we have 25 blades at 2 sockets each... 60k in Windows licenses for just one vDatacenter might give some exec a heart attack... probably part of why we do it the way we do. Paying twice as much, stretched over a couple dozen payments is more executive-friendly.

I would like to suggest merging the tags "remote-desktop-services" and "remote-desktop-gateway" as RD Gateway is just a subset of RDS... so why not just keep the RDS tag.
