God dayum Solaris sucks
@Cole It's very neckbeardy
@Cole what's the problem
@ChrisS harrumph
@ChrisS to install rsync I had to go to sunfreeware.com, download the package, then since the machine is in the DMZ, FTP it over, then install.
I've mostly forgotten everything I ever knew about Solaris.
20:07
That's not so bad.
@ChrisS just not as nice as package managers in Linux.
@Cole it only gets hairy when you have to compile the sfw stuff yourself
@Iain blah
Is it even worth learning Solaris in this day and age?
@Cole That depends on how far down your beard goes.
$LastJob had a pretty big solaris deployment
20:09
@MDMarra yeah, pretty big here too.
I'm on the fence. I thought Solaris was on the up and coming when OpenSolaris was released; partial confirmed when it survived as Illumos and OpenIndiana.
Now both of those projects seem heavily stagnated
Of course, they were running to RHEL after the Oracle buyout and the comments about how they dont care is SPARC market share drops to 0%
(It was a SPARC shop)
Shit, I knew Solaris was going to die as soon as I heard Oracle was buying Sun.
I had the joy of teaching the 60+ year old Solaris admin about vSphere, and all he wanted was to keep comparing it to Zones
20:12
@MDMarra :(
SPARC probably could have changed the world a little bit if they had OpenSourced the design... Possibly via OpenCores.
how do I get pci vendor etc on Linux?
lspci -vv didn't help
@pauska Try lspci -nn
@MichaelHampton I had overestimated the community's resolve in keeping it going....
Long beard, don't care.
20:13
@MichaelHampton there we go, thanks
@MDMarra When all you have is hammer, everything looks like a nail. =]
@ChrisS It's pretty hard to keep it going when upstream decides not to drop source unless they're actually making a release.
Solaris is not dying. Why should it? Just because the development is not open any more? If so, what would you say about Windows?
@ewwhite Got any experience with CudaEye?
I guess knowing some Solaris won't hurt the resume
20:16
@MichaelHampton They would have to just fork and go their own way... But they haven't. They're sitting like lost puppy dogs waiting for Oracle to give them direction that's never coming.
Great, Unix guy left again for the day - I was supposed to sit with him for 4 hours. I sat with him for 10 minutes.
@ChrisS If I am not mistaken, the whole Illumos/OI thingy is heavily driven and paid by Nexenta. I suspect that the directions are there but simply nobody knows how to fly the plane.
@Cole rm -fr "Oh I'm sorry, I thought I'd save space by removing French language binaries."
@Cole what you need is long legs in stockings and a short skirt
I am not sure the gender really matters
@syneticon-dj Not for an old beard it doesn't, no.
20:21
lulz, I was a hot lady once.
My old manager saw a picture of me pretranstion, he was like "I feel......weird. You were hot, I feel gay."
Holy shit dudes
Why didn't anyone tell me Ganglia is so easy to set up
I've been over here rolling nuts with Icinga
You think that's easy, try Opsview
My excuse is that I don't even know what the hell language you're speaking.
@MDMarra I love Opsview, but I'm not allowed to use it
@JoelESalas Because we hate you and want you to suffer. Here, have some Nagios.
20:24
@JoelESalas The whole UK support hours only thing is brutal
Icinga is just a Nagios anagram - what were you expecting?
I have a budget for monitoring and won't spend it there because of that
Ganglia sounds like something you go to the clinic for.
@syneticon-dj I didn't pick it ;_;
I fdisk'ed without protection, now I have the Ganglia.
2
20:25
@Cole Yeah, and the "Free clinic" at that.
@Cole Ganglia is not what you get from fdisk'ing, it is what you get from fsck'ing
oh my god 1 more hour
"It was my first time fscking, so I don't know if this is normal or not, but... well, would you be willing to look at my Ganglia and tell me what happened?"
"Yes, yes, show it to me!"
@Cole Heh. Got a message from the boss asking if I was coming in today. Not sure how to answer that, honestly. I mean, it is 3:30 already, right?
20:28
@HopelessN00b did you call out?
Or just not show up?
@HopelessN00b "what are you talking about - it's sunday, isn't it?"
@Cole Been working remotely, on some clusterfuck out west, didn't notice the time until about an hour ago... seemed to late to go in then. Seems even more true now.
@HopelessN00b doh.
Can't wait to go home and clean, yay
@WesleyDavid What's a CudaEye?
O I C - cudaeye.com
has anyone here ever flashed firmware on 10gig cards? more specficially intel x520's?
20:36
flashing firmware is still a great deal of DOS fun for a lot of hardware - and this would be 18 years after the last version's release
So, from this moment out - if I say something negative about my life - tase me bros.
@syneticon-dj that's probably my next step, win98se dosboot usb pen
@syneticon-dj I wonder what the lowest score on that is. I got a -150.
@WesleyDavid - my sister said her next kid if it's a boy will be named Wesley O_o
20:41
@syneticon-dj Just scored -50 on that

Q: PowerShell script to find meeting requests in Exchange mailbox and accept them

Evan M.Is it possible to create a PowerShell script that will go into a mailbox (specifically for a meeting room), find all it's meeting requests and accept them? We've implemented a new mechanism in our exchange environment so that requests sent to meeting rooms will be auto-accepted if the room is av...

I'm developing a knack for answering really old questions apparently, since MDMarra beats me to all of the new ones.
Yeah @MDMarra is a fucking ninja.
I make good rep scooping up all the easy ones.
I want to break 1k rep by the end of the week, don't think I can do it but I'll try
20:45
@Cole that is only 250. All you have to do is have one good day. Find ~5-10 questions to answer, then answer them.
@MDMarra -50 is not that bad
Shit, I had 200 rep before I went to bed last night.

Q: Precedence for GPO

Matt BearI'm just trying to find what takes precedence in loading a GPO. Specifically, will drives map prior to scripts running? I have an .exe in a network share that I'm running every time a user logs in, and I dont know if I should load it via the mapped drive or through the network path.

Answer that
My answer there isn't that great
Plus, I'm curious
"will drives map prior to scripts running"? In the olden days, you would use scripts for mapping drives!
Those days are gross and gone!
20:49
yes, because nobody should need mapped drives anymore
long live item-level targeting!
@syneticon-dj so many mapped drives here.
People don't know how to browse out to things, they're like OMG I NEED A MAPPED DRIVE TO GET MY FILES.
Dan
Dan
Same everywhere, dude.
Users 'get' drive letters, so may as well make things easy.
@MDMara I've searched high and low for a definite answer on that, but never seen anything authorative
I got an answer on teched this summer, but OFC i forgot to write it down
the ordering is hidden deep in the registry somewhere
and it can't be changed
@pauska this whole DOS booting business is freaking me. I wonder why so many manufacturers are incapable of creating a working update process without the need to mess around with a custom-crafted DOS boot disk.
@Cole would not a single "mapped" drive to \\domain\dfsroot be sufficient?
20:56
@syneticon-dj not for these users.
Dan
Dan
Why do you guys hate mapped drives?
@syneticon-dj I could probably install Linux or Windows and run the online update tools
I hate mapped drives too
@Dan I hate "drives" altogether, not just the mapped ones. It is a silly, archaic concept
@Dan They're a hassle, we have UNCs now, etc.
Dan
Dan
20:59
Why though?
they are context-dependent and not portable for once
"I have this file on my drive T:"
Dan
Dan
But drives are just part of the Windows architecture. UNC isn't new and does differ thing s
Yeah, but you've got to have a name. T: is no more localised than a UNC path.
Me: "Where is the config file?"
User: "It's on the X: drive."
Me: "Uhh what is your X drive mapped to?"
User: "... X."
hello
Dan
Dan
Oh, you don't let people map their own, that's silly!
21:02
Drives are not part of the Windows Architecture, \Device\HardDisk1\Partition0 is. Drives are just a layer on top of that.
firmware-version: 0x800002fd
yeah, why make it easy and show a numeric value
dghahgagjhajggfsg
@pauska is that the new one, the old one and is it by any chance little-endian?
@pauska Because 2147484413 is so much easier to remember
(Intel loves endianness games, we all know that)
Dan
Dan
That's semantics, drive letters are ingrained and your example is just a layer on top of the drive controller. How many places can you use a non letter format?
21:07
I don't mind drive letters on the local system, I just don't like mapping network drives via GPO or even worse a batch script with a bunch of "net use" commands in it that's deep in the bowels of Sysvol and some random GPO applies it to a particular set of users and I dunno man they just feel clunky and outdated and it's just a pain to administer
@MattBear hello
Dan
Dan
That's what Group Policy Preferences are for, Ryan.
I referred to both new and old methods
im in the middle of converting a 450 user workgroup to active directory....
@Dan you can use UNCs. And if you need to give your users a consistent navigation experience, there are things like Explorer Favorites, symbolic links and Dfs.
21:11
@MattBear Jesus
450 users, with manually mapped drives...
I HATE mapped drives now lol
Dan
Dan
Sorry Syneticon, maybe in your environment but not the ones I work in. And the idea of using junctions.... No thanks
I've never had an issue with drive letters and I don't really know why you guys are struggling, tbh. Users get them, they work and are easy to configure
@MarkHenderson did you decode it for me? cause I honestly couldn't figure it out
@Dan same here, no chance in hell we'd survive without mapped drives
too many applications relying on it
@Cole And he will be awesome for it.
Dan
Dan
Oh yeah that too. Loafs of apps don't like UNC at all
21:16
@ewwhite So no insight into Cudaeye?
@WesleyDavid shes' cray, that would be her 4th kid
Eh, I've never met a crazy Wesley. Me either. Me either. Me either. Me either.
4
So, that's why I feel like a failure lol. My sister got married at 21, had 3 kids before she turned 28 and owns her own (successful) business.
@WesleyDavid that made me snort rather loudly, thanks.
@Cole I could try to knock you up too if that would help your self esteem...
@HopelessN00b ALL OF MY NOPES.
Can't wait to get rid of my uterus. Only reason I'm hanging onto it is to take my eggs and put them in my (future) wife. I only have 2 more years until they're useless though.
21:23
@Dan which apps? I have not seen one for years. Also, Windows is pretty much the only system left around with "Drives". And it has to struggle with the concept all along - attach a all-in-one cardreader and see half of the available drive letter space being reserved for a single device. Have users with locally-attached "X" drives and wonder why your network drive mapping is not working. There is all sorts of trouble just waiting to jump on you
so drives work, yes, but only under limited circumstances
@Cole don't you think your future wife would prefer to bring her own eggs?
@syneticon-dj well, I think (hope) she'd be down to have at least one of mine and one of hers
@syneticon-dj @Dan Most apps here tolerate UNC, it's just that they don't use the new win7-style explorer window where you can have favourites etc
@cole I'm so confused now...
@MattBear I'm transgendered, female to male.
@pauska calc my friend
21:28
2 minutes.
@MarkHenderson !!!
ahh the world makes sense again!
@Cole Wouldn't that be a complete clone/genetic copy, though? I mean, your egg with your sperm... you.
@HopelessN00b I don't has sperm.
@Cole Morning
/evening
@MarkHenderson day
21:29
@Cole Oh, that makes more sense, then. Want some of mine?
@HopelessN00b I...don't know
@MarkHenderson Time zone neutral greetings - G' day
@Cole Don't take offense, @HopelessN00b will have sex with anything that's warm
Oh dammit, forgot to take my meat out of the freezer.
21:30
just put it in a sandwich baggie and mail it!
No one likes frozen meat.
@Iain Hey- since daylight savings time changed I don't see you much any more :P
@MarkHenderson Doesn't have to be warm. I mean, a nice bonus and all, but not a requirement.
ok going home, see you guys in 15-20
@Cole Leaving early?
21:31
@MarkHenderson and there was me thinking I see more . of you in the evenings too
@HopelessN00b "Holes, Check; Pulse, eh screw it"
@MattBear you' 'll fit in well here .
YOU SEE GUNSHOT WOUNDS, I SEE WARM, MOIST ORIFICES
ooops... just realized I haven't updated Exchange 2010 at wife's company since May 2011.
That's bad, right?
@ewwhite Will anyone have noticed ?
21:35
@Iain I just ran into a bug with Activesync + iPhone.
@ewwhite I dunno, SP1 for 2010 totally fucked one of the servers I have for a client
@ewwhite not at all - if she calls for divorce, it would be easier for you to get in there to gather evidence to your advantage
but part of me thinks it's partially user(wife)-error.
She creates multi-day calendar events... but it'll be like, "Wednesday 5pm -> Friday 9am"
@ewwhite not really, considering the SHIT updates they've been releasing (and pulling) lately
and the bug makes that show up as Thursday -> Saturday on her phone
21:37
@ewwhite If it were my wife I' d be thinking the same
it's a real bug, but WHO DOES THAT?
well.. I get to go join another department to AD... And teach the IT department how to do it....
So I checked updates, and I have 1.3GB of windows updates on the Exchange server...
gulp
@ewwhite what's the appointment label? I would think that something like "love my husband" would fit well for a multi-day event.
is it bad that I cant trust half my techs to solve anything beyond "monitor is unplugged", and thats only with help
21:40
@ewwhite Not that bad, but that's about what a year of Windows updates costs on disk, yeah.
@MattBear Yes

Q: Is an average RAM usage per Apache process of 43 MB "normal" for a Social Networking site?

ProgrammerI have a Social Networking site that runs on a single LAMP Server that handles everything. The average RAM usage per Apache process is 43 MB. Is that amount roughly within the expected range for a Social Networking site, or is it too high? If it's too high, where and how can I look to bring th...

Anyone ever run the Phoronix test suite? phoronix-test-suite.com
I've had to write out detailed, step by step instructions, with troubleshooting steps, just for them to domain join a windows 7 machine
using a profile migration wizard, that takes care of the joining process for them
I would be embarrassed if someone had to give me instructions like that....
@tombull89 out of close votes??
21:46
Oct 18 at 11:48, by tombull89
@pauska I don't have close votes.
oh
gah, I forget that every time.. you show up as ~14k here on chat :)
@tombull89 answer some questions then
@pauska Yeah, I'd quite gladly transfer rep from other sites to make it 2k.
@Iain ServerFault is very much a learning experience for me - I've got very little knowledge to offer as an answer.
@tombull89 should we migrate it to SU so you could vote on it?
@syneticon-dj SO doesn't migrate crap, I don't think SF should either ;)
21:50
Alright, where do you Windows guys put your KMS?
@tombull89 hang out on the tags you know, pick something you'd like to know more about read up, answer questions, get close votes :)
"SO doesn't migrate crap" - you can keep a straight face while writing that?!
@MattBear I happen to be looking for a helpdesk role that pays $250,000/yr, since you mention it... :)
@HopelessN00b my dc
@syneticon-dj no, of course I can't. Although knowing they can't migrate to SF makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
21:51
@pauska Right, that would make the most sense. sigh Looks like I'm moving KMS.
@HopelessN00b where's yours? WDS?
@HopelessN00b It was the only logical choice for me, as I would never remove the server..
just promote it to a DC - no problems there, no need to do much :)
@syneticon-dj It's on its own server. Before that, it was on one of the file servers or something stupid like that.
@HopelessN00b On a DC
@HopelessN00b Whats wrong with it being on its own server?
21:55
@MarkHenderson my hours are 8-430
I mean it's ridiculously light-weight and doesn't deserve its own server, but there shouldn't be a problem with having it there
@Cole Ah, i thought you usually leave about 9.30am (my time).
My hours are 730-430 so I tend to keep track of when people come/go :p
@MarkHenderson Mostly just that. I've got better ways to spend ~$1200 a year.
@MarkHenderson and this is why i always have a utility server for stuff like this
@MarkHenderson Yeah 8-430, home in 15-20 depending on how shitty people drive on the stretch of road near my house and the highway.
@HopelessN00b Shit, you mean its on a real, physical server?
21:58
@MarkHenderson No, VM, but running 2k8 R2 EE... I think that's about $1200/ye for the license, innit?
@HopelessN00b I have no idea, we just buy 2x DC Socket licenses every time we buy a new server
Makes licensing easy
The only people I know who license Windows per month/year are hosting providers
@MarkHenderson Yeah, we use ESXi, so not so easy. Dunno why we don't use Hyper-V, except that it might make way more sense for us to do so.
@MarkHenderson Idiots. Don't forget idiots. We They do that too.
@HopelessN00b A DC license you just need to license the # of sockets you intend on running the VM's on. Bam, unlimited VMs
It's fairly simple Got 6 2-socket servers? Get 12 DC licenses and start cloning
Regardless of underlying virtualisation/os/etc
22:01
@MarkHenderson Yeah, that might cause us a problem, given that we have scads of blade hosts for our VMs. Probably cheaper to do it the stupid, headachy way and mostly use Standard Edition windows everywhere.
A single DC socket is about $1200 - making $2400 the minimum license cost. it just doesn't make sense to license any other way
I know I'm going to hate myself later for this, but I think I want Domino's cheesy bread
@Cole If it's anything like the dominos cheesy bread here.... ew
Certainly easier than employing someone just to look after your licenses :p
@MarkHenderson probably is, hence the hating myself.
A client we have (a government council) employ someone just to keep track of their licenses
And when I chatted to her, amazingly she wasn't keen on licensing Datacenter edition, because it would basically put her out of a job
22:03
@JeffFerland Do you show up for work dressed like that?
No, but I once came to work like this:
@MarkHenderson Well, on the one vCenter instance I'm looking at, we have 25 blades at 2 sockets each... 60k in Windows licenses for just one vDatacenter might give some exec a heart attack... probably part of why we do it the way we do. Paying twice as much, stretched over a couple dozen payments is more executive-friendly.
@JeffFerland Thats from that horrible Pepsi ad
@MarkHenderson I'm not familiar with it, but that's my photo as taken by a guy who we were interviewing.
22:05
It's beer o'clock
@HopelessN00b You could probably wiggle a discount in with that, but at least it's a single 60k cost until you upgrade the OS or retire the servers
@JeffFerland Serious? Thats actually you? It's almost identical to some stupid Pepsi ad
@JeffFerland That's the wrong part of the horse.
@MarkHenderson Yup. Here's the uncropped version with the internern:
@HopelessN00b @MarkHenderson Not idiots, but forced because of rebate (Enterprise Agreement)
@JeffFerland I would expect him to wear the Unicorn mask
22:08
@JeffFerland those horse masks ALWAYS make me laugh
I love how high you can make a person jump by wearing that.
Tap them on the shoulder and bam, airborne
it lacks a moist tongue for the full effect
BLAH I HATE THE M WORD
"Guaranteed to get you noticed at social functions", yea no kiddin
@Cole MMMMOIST
MOIST
22:11
@MarkHenderson GAG
@Cole here, have some moist chocolate cake
god damn, my whole apartment smells when my cat takes a dump
@Cole I bet it smells like moist cat poop
@MarkHenderson FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
How do you handle it in the morning and the ground is moist because of the dew?
22:13
I hate the word panties too
Just creeps me out.
(I'd say that on most mornings its probably not wet, and not quite damp, so moist it is)
Yeah I think most people hate the word panties
I fucking love this beer.
@HopelessN00b probably loves that word, I bet he has a pantie drawer filled with womens underwear that he steals from the locker room at the local public pool
I'm under the impression @HopelessN00b is a creep.
2
Do you get a badge if you get on the star wall every day for a period of time? if not, you should.
@Cole which beer?
22:15
@Iain Heavy Seas Loose Cannon Hop3 IPA
oooh IPA my favourite
@Iain I am also an IPA guy
Mmm hops.
@Cole yeah - If you ever see Jaipur IPA buy loads :)
@Iain I'll have to see if the place down the street has it. They have a good section of craft beers.
I judge people mercilessly on their beer choice(s).
@Cole No but if you get 10 stars from 10 different people (they can be on different posts) then you get a badge
22:18
@MarkHenderson I got that badge like, 3 days ago. I was proud.
I couldn't have gotten the Outspoken badge with out the help of........nipples and boobs.
My cat just got super offended from my beer breath. I'm like dude, you shit in a box.
@Cole you won't like @MarkHenderson then he's Aussie and likes cold fizzy piss :)
::runs::
Holy shit you can tell I lost weight, god dayum.
@Iain I like cold beer yes
@Iain as long as it's not warm fizzy piss.
I'm not a fan of fizzy piss
But the correct temperature for the beers I like is about 1-2c and the correct outside temperate is anywhere from 30-40c
22:22
@Cole I'm not a creep, I'm just a misunderstood appreciator of the female form.
@MarkHenderson too cold and too hot
@HopelessN00b people get 6+ years for that.
See now this is why I hate being a sysadmin sometimes. We don't care about your lifestyle choices, your hair colour, you can turn up to work and show everyone your new penis-piercing, but if you don't drink some obscure micro-brew then you're not welcome
@MarkHenderson hey man, I don't know what you guys do there - but I don't show anyone my penis at work.
2
@Cole fab out of context wall post :)
22:26
@Iain I do what I can to help the community.
Then again, if someone asked to see my penis at work - I'd probably show them.
@MarkHenderson Little Creatures in bottles allowed to warm up is divine
I would like to suggest merging the tags "remote-desktop-services" and "remote-desktop-gateway" as RD Gateway is just a subset of RDS... so why not just keep the RDS tag.
Er, actually there's a separate tag for RDS as well >_<
man now I just want beer on draft.
and a steak.
@Cole People who run slow, yeah.
@HopelessN00b and...beer almost out of my nose.
22:32
Show me your penis, @vCole. Wait, you're not at work. My bad.
@Cole Serves ya right for drinking beer while I'm stuck at work. :p
So @MDMarra, I'm back to chatting up my Bomgar rep for a box.
@WesleyDavid however, I do get asked about my junk fairly often.
@Cole Yeah, I never thought about asking you about your junk until you talked about people asking about your junk.
@WesleyDavid it's nothing all that exciting.
It have an inny and an outty now.
22:33
@Cole That's what she... wait... you're not fun to insult. =(
lulz.
@WesleyDavid feeling any better today?
@Cole Yes, after lots of sleep and stuff, I'm convalescing.
No puking today, so that's nice.
@WesleyDavid glad to hear it.
I've had a headache ALL day.
@Cole Ick. Are you against taking pills?
I'm so pro pill it's not funny.
OM NOM GIVE ME PILLS NOM NOM
@WesleyDavid My parole officer strongly advises against it...
22:35
Just realized it's because I haven't given myself my shot this week.
now I'm too lazy
@Cole Go shoot yourself.
Nao.
I mean, what's not to like about stabbing yourself in the tenderparts with a needle.
@WesleyDavid probably not good after drinking, thins my blood = could make a mess.
Especially when you're putting a 1.5" needle into your thigh.
@Cole It'll be just like an episode of Dexter, except you get to stay alive and analyze your own blood spatters.
@WesleyDavid well ...
"I see by the arc of smeared blood on the flat screen that I was ill prepared for self inflicted pain and underestimated the power of my own reflexes. And screaming. Lots of screaming."
22:40
@WesleyDavid LULZ.
The worst is when you get the needle in, pull the plunger back and there's blood - so you have to take it out and do it again
Is being drunk at 5:45PM a bad thing?
Because I've certainly been drunk way earlier.
@Cole No typos. You're not drunk. Come back when you're singing Oklahoma through vomit bubbles.
@WesleyDavid I'd want someone to put me out of my misery by then.
holy shit
how yall doing
@NickM. WHAT UP G
I think i found the problem Ive been havin g
with the MPIO's
22:50
100mb switch
There was a cat-6 ethernet pluggeg from one switch to the other
@NickM. Shit, cats in the datacenter are bad news. Hair clogging up the fans, cat urine all over the racks, and some cat always ends up humping the power cables out of the sockets.
@ewwhite what are the chances this is what's been causing the issue
Why would that matter..?
I'm drunk, so thoughts are hard.
@WesleyDavid they have a referral program ;)
22:54
@MDMarra Oh yeah? shit.
@MDMarra I just called my dude. =/
@Cole I'm sober, and I was under the impression that you were supposed to plug Ethernet cables into switches. Glad I know better now.
Heh it's cool. I don't know if I qualify as an individual and not a company anyway
@HopelessN00b okay, glad we're under the same impression.
MY WHOLE CAREER I NEVER KNEW
@HopelessN00b Ethernets are spread on the ground to catch token rings when they fall out of the tubes.
