@BartSilverstrim Grandma Greta has to type them up
which means first she needs to find her old typewriter and re-ink the ribbon ('cuz they don't make them anymore)

wife: "how many page views is your new site up to right now? " me: "just over 3000 for 1.5 weeks? why" wife: "we only get 10k a month" - they've been in business for over 10 years.

@lsiunsuex Does the business server the old people?

worse, graphic designers (they make font's)
i (we) have offered to redo it on the cheap but the owners are stuborn
go buy something and help my wife's paycheck - p22.com
(i've always called dibs on the domain name should they ever go out of business. can't buy 3 letter domains anymore :)

@voretaq7 I was told you can't have the minutes until they're accepted into the record the following meeting.

@BartSilverstrim "We want the chance to edit what we said before we release it"
So is your school board like ours where they gavel the meeting to order, go immediately into closed session, and emerge for 5 minutes at the end to tell the assembled angry mob they don't have time to listen to us?
I want a resolution passed that the closed executive sessions can last no more than 25% of the total meeting time.
Then if they want to have their hour of drunken orgy or whatever the hell they do instead of listening to residents and parents they can, but they have to sit around for 3 hours afterward before they can close the meeting

4:20 PM
@voretaq7 It's stabby-stabby time for the other padawan when he gets back from vacation. Absolutely NO documentation in our wiki for the new 2008r2<>Samba integration he built.

@Adrian . . .

@voretaq7 this just made my day

@lsiunsuex There's over 11k for sale right now, with prices ranging from $60 to $850,000 USD.

whats the one for $60 ?
where you looking if you dont mind sharing ?

$60 => 9sl.com 9pe.com 1m7.com 8v1.com lg0.com 1j9.com b6i.com

4:31 PM
@voretaq7 @ChrisS can *BSD, acting as a router, load-balance outbound connections over two WAN links?

huh... i guess thats my ignorance - only really use networksolutions.com to find domains

I assume yes, but I don't know shit about it

Q: Sharing Windows 7 NLB in home network

Andrew M.I have read this question and have been googling trying to do what is in the title, with no luck. I´ve tried bridging connections, ICS, etc. I have two separate internet connections from two different companies at my disposal. I have got the NLB in Windows 7 working using these two connections. ...

I've dealt with Sedo before, smooth as glass every time so far.
@MDMarra pfSense has it built-in, and fairly easy to configure.
The other BSDs can, but setting it up takes some doing.

pfSense is just a nicely GUId FreeBSD distro, right?

Yep, more or less. It's a FreeBSD distro meant to be a router/gateway with a user friendly web interface.

4:33 PM
I couldnt remember if it was built on FreeBSD or NetBSD

@MDMarra @ChrisS it's not that hard to set up :-)

@voretaq7 No, but for someone who's never run anything but Windows.....

@MDMarra there's a whole handbook chapter on it :-)
@ChrisS unless Windows link aggregation/failover/load-balancing has improved a lot I always found unix easier to set up
Linux has it down with bonding

@voretaq7 That's link aggregation.. He wants to use two Internet connections.

I have to give them credit - that's easier to set up than any of the BSDs
@ChrisS ohh - that's harder
unless both links have the same IP space -- then it's just annoying
holy shit - has hell frozen over?

4:36 PM
@lsiunsuex They seem a bit pricey, and the license.... is very restrictive.

24 hours without a package update for Ubuntu

@voretaq7 You must be running an unsupported version.

@ScottPack 12.04

@voretaq7 Must be a holiday in South Africa.

@voretaq7 Then your update servers must be wrong.

4:38 PM
admittedly stripped all to hell, but still usually I have at least 2-3 updates
@ScottPack us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu :-)
(I'm only half-not-seriously checking these things because... like... seriously - did hell freeze over and nobody told me?)

@voretaq7 No. I got one 75 minutes ago. Check your email.

@Adrian I didn't get the memo :(

@voretaq7 Office Space?

@84104 you have to ask?

@voretaq7 It seems familiar and that's what comes to mind, but I'm not sure.

4:43 PM
@84104 Son, I am disappoint.
You must go rewatch the movie as penance.

Mostly it reminds me that I found a printed license for a virgin the other day.
I should scan that.
I have no idea where it came from! I think it might be for some company named Virgin, but it doesn't say that.
@voretaq7 Also, whatever old person.

@voretaq7 Yep, best thing I've seen all day.

Anyone play any CCGs here (like MTG for example)?

How come I never get to have a yellow screen moment at work??
@MDMarra MTG, yep. Fair warning - I suck and get pwn3d by 8 year olds.

I used to play a lot (Ice Age through Mirrodin), but stopped years ago.

4:47 PM
@84104 Lawn. Off. BITCH.

I played in high school and just picked up again

There's a game called Shadow Era that's mostly digital and just launched within the last year. Physical cards just launched like last week.

@ChrisS only two stars though. I'm losing my touch :(

@voretaq7 It takes a while to get to the goods.... Too much anticipation

It's sort of MTGish without being a clone and it only has a 200 card ecosystem right now with an expansion on the horizon

4:49 PM
@ChrisS Are you breathless with antici....

Every single time I play I see a new MTG card I've never seen before. I swear some people are printing them in their basements just to screw with me.

Haha
You should check out Shadow Era. They have Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Browser-based clients

Pulls out a 2 Blue Mana card of "You lose instantly! LOLz"

Register for free and get a starter deck, you can play the computer or real opponents to get gold, and use gold to buy more cards
You can also spend real money to get stuff faster, but anything you can buy with money you can buy with gold.

@MDMarra This sounds suspiciously like farmville for CCGs.

4:51 PM
Never played farmville
But the company that makes it has been clear that they want the game to be fun and accessible for everyone

Windows Folks: Do you generally have your users connect to shares by a direct URI or map the drives?

You get a starter farm, raise crops to get gold, use gold to buy supplies and land for more crops, lather-rinse-repeat

Ah
Sort of, except you can play against other people

@Adrian Drive mapped to DFS to shares.

@Adrian What @ChrisS said
@ChrisS This game is entirely turn-based. There are no instants or interrupts. Everything you do is during your own turn, so it's sort of like a chess match in that sense

4:55 PM
Requires a Unity Web Player to play in browser...

Chinese fortune says: "don't take life to seriously" HA!

@ChrisS Ok, good. My boss has been trying very hard to get us off drive mappings for years, and it's now biting me in the ass HARD.

i'll smile when i'm a millionaire - till then, i have work to do

@ChrisS Yeah, that it does

@Adrian Late to party, but map drives for users.

4:57 PM
I've got people with hundreds of URI links to various files scattered all around, and now that the old Samba server started getting wonky, they're all broken.

"This app is incompatible with your HTC" - Wont run on my phone either.

Is it a previous model ARM CPU?
There's a link on their site for older ARM packages, I think

@BartSilverstrim Thanks. Need to have a chat with the boss and padawan about that particular prejudice.

Yeah, ARMv6

I think their attitude falls under "trying to admin Windows servers as if they were Linux".

4:58 PM
I think that there's an ARMv6 .apk link on their page, not 100% though
^direct link to .apk file, since chat truncates the URL

@ChrisS Did I read right that your Wildfire is getting ICS?

@ScottPack I'm pretty sure ARMv7 is required for ICS. They haven't released hardly any updates for my phone in a long time, so I'd be surprised if they did one now.
HTC doesn't put much effort into their low end phones. Once it's working correctly, they generally abandon feature upgrades.

Fsck. You know it's a bad day when you want a beer at 10am.

@ChrisS I could live with that. The continual updates for the Droid1 made it slower than hell within 6 months of release.

5:04 PM
@ChrisS They backed down on the Desire HD at the last minute, which annoyed me to no end. My Inspire is pretty much just the US version, so most all roms are cross compatible.

@Adrian usually have my first smoke at 5:30am...

@ScottPack Cyanogenmod?

@lsiunsuex Yeah, there's day I wonder why I quit smoking.

@ChrisS Looks like I misremembered, or misread, the list. It's not on there.
@MDMarra The newest version for the Ace platform (Inspire/DHD) is 7.2. I was using it for a long time, but the phone parts of it sucked so hard that I started going through the various and sundry Sense roms. I think I've finally settled on RunnyDroid.

@MDMarra Downloading now....

5:06 PM
@voretaq7 speaking of updates, do you get the Ubuntu Security mailing list postings?

@ScottPack Sounds like a lot of work. I have an iPhone

@Adrian fuck no
I just assume the OS is insecure and go from there

@voretaq7 Ah, then you'd see the cascading waterfall of stupidity in all its glory.

i remember, i was 19 years old working phone tech support for a company. we had training for a new product and the trainer was from out of town. trainer didn't know any better so we went to the bar next door for lunch - he paid for drinks - what was i gonna do? say sorry, i cant - i'm only 19? got back to the office, felt like shit. last time i ever tried that

@Adrian ...which is why I don't subscribe to it.

5:07 PM
@MDMarra It was a week or two of annoyance. I'm unwilling to pay the money for an iPhone.

Hi everyone =]
Guys, did you could recommend me some good hosting service ?

I am on the FreeBSD security notifications list.
I've received.... 5 messages. all year.

@MDMarra If you don't want to put the work into it, no requirement to do so... "I can hack my phone" isn't a good reason to pick any particular phone. "I'm going to hack my phone" is a good reason to pick one over another.

@ChrisS Nice. It has some quirks because of the small card pool right now, but I've really enjoyed it a lot and (to me) it's a lot more fun than Magic, because there's no mathematical "best" anything

@ValterHenrique what are your requirements

5:09 PM
I was thinking host some wordpress websites to my clients

USA ? UK ? linux? windows? php? ruby? with rails? mysql? mssql? iis or apache?

Since investing like $20 can get you pretty much a complete set if you do it right, there's no one dude with 4 mana drains, 4 force of wills, and 4 whatever else is really expensive to pound on you.

php, to run wordpress, linux because is more cheap, mysql as database to wordpress, apache, usa because I'm from Brazil
@lsiunsuex that was my answer to you, sorry that I didn't quote you

@voretaq7 they have any updated releases lately?

my rec is always 1and1.com - cheap, easy and in the USA - some of the other guys like a few others
NO GODADDY

5:12 PM
right

I prefer webhostingpad.com for ultra cheap LAMP stacks. YMMV

I'm asking because I don't know companies in USA
I was looking for it, so I found this link top10bestwebsitehosting.com/…
which says that ipage.com is the best, is that true ?

god, #4 - godaddy

Never heard of it

godaddy is the devil!
2

5:13 PM
@ValterHenrique Never heard of them.

@ChrisS, it should be just fake statics to fool people

thats a pretty shitty list. no amazon? rackspace? mediatemple?

that's why I came to ask you guys about it

can we just append "godaddy is the devil" to the chatroom's description?

@lsiunsuex, hahahaha

5:15 PM
I know someone on Bluehost, not bad overall... But their service is basically the same as anyone else.

to be honest with you guys I'm gonna start some works as freelancer

@ValterHenrique bottom line, there are a ton of cheap LAMP servers. find one that doesn't look like a scam and has a good price
wordpress is the devil's offspring, but if you can make money off of it, go for it.

@lsiunsuex Nothing wrong with wordpress...

@Basil as a blog
my beef with wordpress is only the assholes that try to turn wordpress into a cart, or invoicing system or something not a blog

@lsiunsuex Ah. I can see that being annoying.

5:19 PM
@Adrian one last month I think
let me look

I've never used Wordpress extensively, but have seen a shat-tonne of posts on SF about "Halp! Me WP site haz bin Hax0r3d!!" <-- Makes me think it's got a ton of security problems and lots of idiots use it... I could be wrong.

this month actually
Topic: named(8) DNSSEC validation Denial of Service
CVE Name: CVE-2012-3817
Before that was CVE-2012-0217 (which is actually kinda scary)

@I need to host my professional email, my website as portfolio, and others clients

Q: The bad tag collection

MDMarraSummary Ok, we have a lot of bad tags. I found at least half a dozen without trying over the weekend. Some of these tags have hundreds of questions in them, meaning that it will take a dev so that we don't clobber the front page. For the next day or two, let's compile a running list of them her...

@lsiunsuex, I was looking and found mochahost, did you know if is good ?

5:22 PM
^^ 10 tags left!
(well plus the ones we'll need to have burninated)

@voretaq7 Hey, it's me!

@MDMarra Mario!

Did you guys think to use amazon web services as hosting is a good idea ?

@ValterHenrique I mean, millions of other people use it

If you have the budget for it it can be.

5:27 PM
@ValterHenrique You need to select a host based on criteria. There is no such thing as "good" or "bad" - only "Meets Requirements" and "Does Not Meet Requirements".
Define your criteria and they will lead you to a provider.

@voretaq7 I got it.

(e.g. Amazon wins for "able to scale fast", not so much on reliability and ability to recover after outages)

Should the canonical tag really be "rewrite"? I'd think url-rewrite would make more sense.... or something that describes what we're rewriting..

@voretaq7, I worked with AWS for one year
and it's fine
but I don't know if to host my services there I should get one EC2 instance or if there's another service with focus in LAMP

If I was serious about hosting WP sites I'd probably colo a server (or rent a dedicated server, depending on a lot of factors) and run jailed Apache instances for each site... But I'm not exactly a multi-tennant WP expert either.

5:34 PM
the average prices for one month running a instance in AWS it's $20

rackspace cloud is $10 / month for the base account

which is more expensive than these sites that you guys recommended

@ValterHenrique because their not shared hosts
their cloud servers

There's always someone cheaper...

@ChrisS WP is subject to SQL injection attacks and aslso to brute force attacks on the default Admin account. Not having a default account named 'admin' would probably be a good idea.

5:36 PM
rackspace / amazon - all you get is the OS - apache, mysql, php, your responsible for all of that - not the provider

But yeah, we're running the gamut of VMs, shared hosting, dedicated servers, and I just mentioned colo... The only option we're missing is bringing fiber into your house. =]

@lsiunsuex I know, I just wonder if there's some AWS with focus in this kind of service and more cheaper than EC2

@ChrisS don't forget about running a server on your cell phone! lifehacker.com/5920173/…

@lsiunsuex Er, yeah... that's an "option" too.

the ultimate in DR implementations
building catches fire? no worries! the server is in your back pocket
just don't get shot in the ass and the server is fine

5:38 PM
Just don't sit on it.
Oh right. You live in Buffalo. =)

I keep my phone in my front pocket.

front pocket with my wallet

thought I was one of the only guys who put his wallet in his front pocket.

I keep in my dock charging

wallet in front left, phone in front right

5:42 PM
@JeffFerland no keys?

I don't want to use fully qualified variables in my module, does class haproxy inherits haproxy::params { make me an evil person? :-P

@lsiunsuex clipped on a carabiner, usually on my right hip.

ahh

phone in the left pocket, ipod in the right and wallet on the back pocket

keys / smokes - left, phone / wallet - right, headphones back pocket

5:42 PM
Is there an extensive article somewhere that weighs the pros and cons of different user naming schemes against each other?
I'm about to create all the users in the AD of one of our clients and am wondering what the "best" naming scheme would be like.

ust to keep my phone in my shirt pocket (if it had one) but then i feared getting cell phone radiation cancer by my heart. figure if its in my pocket, atleast it helps keep me sterile

@ChrisS both are true, security issues and idiots
Even a broken theme can allow a full compromise

keys/wallet - left / phone - right

It's painful.

@OliverSalzburg pretty sure it's just preference.

5:45 PM
keys = left, phone = right, wallet = back-right

@OliverSalzburg Um...not that I'm aware.

however, I take my keys out of my pocket once I sit down at my desk.
the mazda key is one of those flip open key things - uncomfortable if you leave it in your pocket

Whatever makes the most sense for your client to easily use without forming embarrassing usernames I'd suppose, as long as they're consistent.
You wouldn't want Fenton Arting to have an initial-lastname username.
3

a better question - case or no case on the phone? no case for me. like how the 4s looks in white.

@OliverSalzburg given.family or family.given; anything with an initial is going to get duplicates fairly quickly.

5:46 PM
no case at the moment @lsiunsuex i also have a 4s in white

@BartSilverstrim Well, these are German names. So there's the issue with umlauts. Then there's at least one user with a "title of nobility" (?)

I've never had a dupe of mine...
Why would you have titles in the username?
They have to type this stuff in all the time...

@BartSilverstrim Because it's part of the last name

Most of our usernames are 4-5 letters.

Ah. Then...*shrug* whatever works for the clients.

5:48 PM
@lsiunsuex No case, black 4s

i.e. mine is colel

It's not like it's something to really debate over normally.

emails are best for usernames IMO - never duplicates

@BartSilverstrim Right now, what works for them is everybody uses "Administrator" as their login.

5:48 PM
Emails are usually based on your username...

@OliverSalzburg Titles are never part of a username

That's not good. Are your clients technologically impaired?

@BartSilverstrim If they weren't, would they need you? :)

So whatever rules I set in place, will be the rule for naming from now on. So I thought I'd think about it a bit ;D

Anybody heard of Layer47? I've just got a completely cold email offering to beat any competitor for supplied (ignoring the fact I don't do purchasing). Had a look at the blog (not website, blogspot) and found some of the most impressive management psycotwaddle going.

5:49 PM
@JeffFerland I can empty my own trash can but the school had custodians do it once a week or so...

other than that like everyone else said, whatever makes sense. We use first initial + last name for unix usernames, and firstname.lastname for email addresses

[Company] is a full service IT system integrator set up to take the pain out of delivering the next generation infrastructure. Our holistic approach starts at the initial design stage and logically follows on through deployment to performance profiling, testing and lifecycle management. We intelligently blend our best of breed technology portfolio together with our experience to build bridges between applications, networks and business requirements.

@voretaq7 It's like "Tom of York", "of York" would be the last name.

seriously?

@OliverSalzburg There really are better things to spend time thinking about... :-)

5:49 PM
@OliverSalzburg . . . that's his proper legal name?

@voretaq7 Yes

@OliverSalzburg as in what appears on his birth certificate?

@voretaq7 Yes

@voretaq7 Social Security Card.

PROVE IT.
Send the card to me.
Along with a bank account number.

5:50 PM
@Adrian they don't have those in Germany :-)
@OliverSalzburg that's... kinda fucked up.

Don't forget to include his data of birth, last 5 known addresses, etc., etc.

@voretaq7 Heh. They've got some equivalent there, I'm sure. Otherwise it wouldn't be Germany.

Mothers madien name, name of first school and pet, etc.

Data of birth... I just Engrished.

von der Lippe is the surname of a prominent Norwegian family, part of the historical Patriciate of Norway. In Norway, the surname is most frequently associated with the descendants Jacob von der Lippe (died 1702), who immigrated from Bremen, Germany and became a citizen of Bergen, Norway in 1655. In Bergen, family members were merchants and business people. Later, the family had clergy members and other officials, as well as theater people, and various other professions. Within Scandinavian countries, there have been several people with the surname von der Lippe without family lines ...
@voretaq7 Names like that

5:51 PM
@OliverSalzburg Exactly.

@OliverSalzburg That's different than "of York" and other titles of nobility (yeah I know it means the same thing, but it's not the same thing :-)

So, would that be tom.v.d.lippe? tom.vonderlippe?

What the holy fuck is this guy talking about

Tom VD on my Lip?

Q: Specific IP for a specific user

Daud Khanhow can i assign a specific IP for a specific user, creating more like a private IP for that shell user. for example user ADAM can use ip 182.22.154.20 but no other user in the system can use this ip. Plus this user is going to set up network listening daemon. os: CentOS firewall: IPtables

5:52 PM
@OliverSalzburg I usually remove spaces from people's last names when creating a username or email address

@MDMarra my brain = exploded.

@voretaq7 Sorry, my mistake

@OliverSalzburg for forming a short (unix) username I'd offer them a choice of the standard (tvanderlippe), short (tvdlippe) or really short (tvdl)

@voretaq7 basically how it works here.

well.... technically you could write and execute a script upon login and give the nic a specific IP address...

5:54 PM
@OliverSalzburg what you want to avoid is stuff like reverend.doctor.professor.fancypants.mcgee :-)

Also, someone just upvoted that to cancel my downvote
Whoever upvoted that should be fired from whatever job they work at

@voretaq7 My grandmother was a Battenburg, and the 'of' was still implied until they emigrated to the States in the 1890s.

/downvotes

@MDMarra I did it.

ha HA

5:54 PM
.............................................wut

@voretaq7 Heheh, yeah, I didn't want to include any titles. I just didn't know the right word earlier :)
Okay, thanks for your input everyone.

@lsiunsuex That can't be what he means. What if two people log in at once?

@MDMarra There's definitely a way to restrict a user to an IP / interface on outbound packets... iptables has -m owner, for example.

@OliverSalzburg the important thing is to resign yourself to the fact that there will be exceptions to the naming policy
(Fenton Arting is a classic example. Another is a sales guy whose name is thomas but everyone knows as tom)

@MDMarra never said it made sense :) just putting the gun in their hands

5:56 PM
@JeffFerland Maybe I'm misunderstanding his question then.

also I don't think Germany is quite as bad as the US about it but you might want to nix middle names. In the south we still get people with 7 names

Don't forget there's also the things where people might get married/divorced. We've got students (granted, students), whos parent's have divorced and while their legal surname would be smith they would want to be known as Jones.

I realize that iptables has that feature, but if all of these users want to go out to the internet, there's got to be some crazy routes to make that work correctly

billy bo bob harold pennington winchester smith!
@tombull89 I've fortunately never encountered that situation, but my answer would be "I'll alias your email, you're stuck with the short username." :-)
(in practice it's trivial to change that too but LAZY!)
BRB::FOOD()

@MDMarra I rewrote it a bit

5:58 PM
while I'm away --

A: The bad tag collection

dunxdGeneric manufacturer tags: hpciscomicrosoftibm These result in people not using more specific tags related to a product line or technology - e.g. cisco-asa.

someone go flesh out the tag lists I stuck in those wikis :-)
</lazy>

@JeffFerland There'd still need to be static outbound routes for all of those additional interfaces though, right?
If the user isn't permitted to use the default route and they want to get out to the Internet, then that's going to get really messy really fast

@tombull89 Yeah, they hate it when you tell them "tough crap."

@MDMarra Only matters for listening daemons attaching to a port, yes?
Being unsolvable doesn't make it a horrid question.

Actually, it does :p

The XIV isn't a NAS, it's a SAN. That means that they have a file server or NAS head getting storage from XIV and making it available over CIFS or NFS. Secondly, we can't help you unless you have administrator access to the systems causing a problem. My best advice is to prove there's a problem to your sysadmins, and have them come and ask if they can't figure it out. — Basil 31 secs ago

6:01 PM
"You should only ask practical, answerable questions..."
But I get what you mean

@voretaq7 Last I knew, in Germany, names had to be picked off a list of approved names. You couldn't just make shit up like we do here.

@MDMarra "No." is an answer. It is reasonable for one to suspect that permissions can be applied to a listening address or interface.

You're right.
Also, before your edit it was both unsolvable and unintelligible.

Oh. Fuck. Me. My userbase as 1,615 .lnk files that need the URIs changed from old server to the new server.

HAHAHA!
/ahem...

6:04 PM
@Adrian This is why you use a DFS namespace :p

@MDMarra Yeah, this was set up by my boss when he was doing my job. o_o

@Adrian Well, that sounds like Powershell...

@JeffFerland This is how I processed that question: "This could be interesting. What does this even say. He's trying to do what? Let me re-read this. What does this even say? Let me re-read this." Then loop detection kicked in and broke the loop with a downvote.

@JeffFerland Except that each of them has to be tested by the users and we have to make sure they all work. Which is going to be about a month's worth of time.

@Adrian I recommend a room full of nitrogen, then.

@Adrian Good. Then they won't have any kre8iv spellings
"Student is expected to sass the professor mercilessly, as the professor sassed her own profs: out of love and care for human knowledge."
snerk

Creative? You might like outrightly wrong spelling?
"vinnessa"

@BartSilverstrim I started filling out Vincent because we were sure it would be a boy - I had to think fast!

I think it's stabby-stabby time. But instead, I'm going to be beat my boss with this gel keyboard support pad

WTF Bind? Loading from master file master/example.com failed: unexpected end of input. Add line-feed to end of file, save, delete line-feed, save. And it's good again.

@ChrisS Feel free to use those arrows next to his nonsense :P

@Basil "you'll need to login or register to do that"

@ChrisS Bah.

That's what I said.

@Basil faaaaaaaack

@voretaq7 It's cool, I'm reading /r/funny now and I'm feeling much better.
