14:00
@PeterGrace Undone :)
You bought a laptop right before EOL too.. Dec 31st they're done.
@PeterGrace Flagged for not giving into my demands
I believe the next model will be 8570x
I was actually cackligng with laughter, thanks :P
Oh, by the way, @Peter. You're not on the about page yet.
Lazy bastard.
14:00
ouch
@ScottPack it's somewhat intentional.
@PeterGrace The laziness, or not being on the page?
@ScottPack I asked Kyle whether they were going to, you know, write stuff that's supposed to go on the about page.
rather than "he is here"
Stealth admining. I like it.
Kyle said "Ah, I was just lazy and didn't put anything in"
so, I didn't want to be that douche who had an expansive "About Me" section while the other guys had two sentences of "they work here, duh"
I had mentioned I'd just wait for them to actually put legit stuff in rather than a holding page, and, well, like most things here, if it's not mission critical it likely wont get done
But secretly, I was waiting for the 1k rep :P
Didn't want a flair icon that had low rep, I have repeenis envy.
14:03
/me bites his tongue
So, TL;DR, I'll put myself in ;)
I'll bet you do.
THERE!
I was talking about this page
Who cares about the blog?
14:09
LOL
@ScottPack NOt many of us here as it kills the chat link
I didn't even know there was an about page for the main site.
@Rebecca told me last night.
amusingly enough, I don't think I have access to change that page.
certain pages in the stackexchange network are only edited by web designers
well, I have access insofar as I could trod in there and make it happen, but protocol-wise I think I have to ask one of the other guys here to make a change.
Oh, here, let me fix that for you. sudo vim /var/www/serverfault/about.html
14:11
lol
Would you like to know why that's wrong, on several levels? :P
@ScottPack emacs....emacs....emacs
/flame
@PeterGrace I know one reason, but that's your problem that you don't have appropriate tools in your stack. :)
I have gvim on my windows desktop, fear not.
That doesn't sound pleasant. cygwin?
Prior to working for this majority-microsoft shop here, I was predominantly a *nix admin.
14:17
Any of you following the SOPA-debates?
erm
thats my setup
Wow, your desk is very clean
are you sure you're a sysadmin?
vmware, equally important as chat.SF :)
I shuffled away loads of garbage before taking the pic
hahaha, see, I didn't even bother.
14:18
nice
I knew the audience.
I really need to clean this office, but I never have the time
@BartDeVos haven't, but been actually calling congress peoples
@BartDeVos thats actually the web config page for a 2960.. but there is vmware behind the chat
I just cant get used to tiling windows..
@PeterGrace I NEED small laptops
13" is the largest I go
14:21
That's way too small for me
I roll large
My battle station :)
open office! agh
erm bart
what is your job title? "Laptop Repairman"?
14:22
@BartDeVos Jeeze dude
Consolidate!
@pauska Cloud Infrastructure System Engineer.
I'm in the middle of a merge between 2 companies
Wow
buzzwordalert
phat ass workstation with vmware workstation then
@BartDeVos is a human buzzword
The laptop in the back is deploying a windows 7 image. Then i'm going to virtualize it to the MBP
Then I'll only have the MBP and the external monitor :)
14:23
@MDMarra This. We've the Lenovo X Series here -- X200, X201 and X220. So much better than the 15+" beasts we used to get from Dell.
@jscott I had an X60 until I got an 11.6" MBA
I have a 13" HP Elite
i <3 it
I loved it, even though it was underpowered and clunky compared to the new models by the time I upgraded
ssd, 3g etc.. but god it was expensive
@PeterGrace I'm tucked away nicely, in the corner ;)
14:25
How do you like the MBA? I bought a MBP i5 13 just Wednesday.
I love it
whats MBA MBP?
macbook air
macbook pro
oh
fags
@jscott the screen felt cramped until I started using safari in fullscreen mode and learned the touchpad gestures
@jscott I'm sorry for your loss
@jscott It's a pro. Popped in 16GB Ram and a 240GB Vertex 3 :), has an i7. It's a beast :)
lol. x220 + R61. I might add just the screen from an r51 at some point to that mix
@MDMarra Yeah, really hoping the gestures will make up for the lack of a Point-stick...
14:26
nah I'd honestly like to use a mac for work, but there is just too much hassle
@pauska It's quality hardware and the trackpad gestures alone make it worthwhile
@jscott I miss the red navigation nipple, but the gestures are awesome
I despise working in RDP (even we're a RDP shop), and I use the vsphere client way too much to be dicking around in virtual pc etc
though, the x220 sored me on lenovo support. Had a broken USB port. took em 4 weeks to realise it was insured and i just had to pay a deductable, and i somewhat felt i was jerked around
@MDMarra: get a thinkpad keyboard. best of both worlds ;p
@pauska Yeah, the RDP client included in office for mac is shit
That's my only gripe, and it's one with MS
@MDMarra Well, my HP is also extremely solid.. but I guess it doesn't have the hype factor
14:27
@JourneymanGeek Wow, that sucks. Levono support has been great here.
@pauska My RDP sessions open automatically upon login
Most of the time i'm in RDP-ception, 3 or 4 sessions deep.
We did buy like 2000 X201s though.
@BartDeVos I have.. 80 different RDP targets in Royal TS
@jscott: more accurately lenovo outsources it to IBM singapore. who outsource it to IBM malaysia
also, i think corp support is better than individual support
@BartDeVos which is as fun as pulling finger nails
14:28
@pauska :)
@pauska True. Stupid security design
@JourneymanGeek Lenovo support got us an updated ROM for the nic that supported our PXE environment. It was like 14 day turn around. Not to shabby.
Dell just blew us off and kept closing/losing tickets.
also, doing vsphere console via RDP is so.. so.. full of agony.. i dont want to think about it
When I wan't to connect to a client this is the way I have to take:
Laptop -> Terminal server in our admin domain -> Terminal server client -> Target server
@jscott Dell is a dick head
it's insane
14:29
@jscott: granted, their reasons for denying it under warranty was that it was physical damage (duh!), but the other stuff...
@MDMarra Agreed :)
We switched our desktop purchases from Dell to Lenovo three years ago
@MDMarra Likewise
@BartDeVos I used to deploy management networks before, with special/hardlocked multi-homed servers.. it just was too much hassle in the end
We still use dell servers because they keep thinking that giving us steep discounts on server hardware will win back our desktop business :)
14:30
@JourneymanGeek Do you spring for the Accidental Damage coverage? If you buy enough, that and battery warranty becomes quite "reasonable".
The only thing I keep locked in a separate firewalled network here is the network itself (switches, routers, firewalls etc) and virtualisation hosts
@jscott: afraid not. also, it was a single system, so...
Ah, I gotcha now...
no one cares about the little guy ;p
@MDMarra They've mostly buyed dell gear here aswell, but the technical operations manager is quitting (and im getting that position).. trust me, within 3 years this is a HP-only shop :P
14:31
@jscott Lenovo offers a $99 warranty to our students (we resell lenovo to students at a discount). The $99 covers any damage.
Its a VERY nice laptop, but yanno
They've given out whole new laptops for someone spilling a bottle of vodka on it, etc.
We've had Lenovo notebooks dropped on the expressway... Returned a box of broken parts, and they ship a new notebook right back. No hassles
@MarkM: Um you're back to MarkM suddenly
?
I'm not
14:32
You're too!
desktop wise, i build anything we use myself (which is rare). At the moment we have... what.. 2 desktop systems, 2 mini itx, two more i can pull for parts ;p
I see "MDMarra" here.
I see people replying to mdmarra, but markm talking
14:32
it was mdmarra both ways last night.. what the hell
@pauska have you refreshed chat since last night when I changed?
@pauska To me, it's still @MDMarra
It won't update unless you refresh
ha!! Geez turbo with mspaint much?
Snip tool :)
14:33
lol
Has basic paint-taunting built in
Win7 got it right, for once
I'll have to sell that feature more.
90% of my freehand circles and taunts are drawn in the snip tool, not paint.
14:34
Hey, it rhymes!
HIT F5
DO IT
DOES NOT WO... nevermind
or Alt-f4
hi mdmarra
hi
nice to meet you
14:35
I prefer shift+ctrl+r
oh let's not forget about @Shads0's rejection last night.. by a robot......
user image
4
you all have stars to spend.. get it on the top of the list
@pauska who's Shads0?
Hey bitches, any shit gone down while I was away?
@TylerShads: Oh you twat, you fucking changed your name!!!
oops sorry for swearing
@pauska E P I C C E P T I O N
@TylerShads You still show up as Shads0 on my screen.
@ScottPack That's what she said?
Refresh is your friend
@KyleBrandt: Lurker!
You're active in the chat room but silent
I suspect you spying on us
counting bad words etc
14:38
@pauska He just popped in = shown as active.
@MikeyB OH MY GOD, REFRESH
pfo
pfo
where is chopper ? :(
Freeze scoundrel?
@pfo Between nickel and zinc?
Damnit, quick edit
:p
pfo
pfo
:P
14:40
@KyleBrandt Bart brings up a good point, who edits serverfault.com/about? Is that an emmett thing?
@MDMarra I was going to be a dick and refer him to the conductors in cabling, but the edit came through.
pfo
pfo
i only use fiber, so yes copper is new to me :P

A: Chat - a plea for moderation

quuxI read through a few days of transcripts and thought about this issue a bit. It seems to me that there is much confusion about some basic chat room governance issues, the clarification of which (from On High?) would probably help move this question towards resolution. I'll list a few fundamental...

Man, I'm going to fucking strangle Orion. summary page shows an alarm, go to the detail, all greens
Will that last comment get me in to trouble? It's like a well known world-war2 starter suddenly starts to point fingers when shit hits the fan........
14:41
@pauska: That is very insulting, you really think I wouldn't script that?
Oh god, don't say insulting, the chat mods will start pouring in! :)
@KyleBrandt I keep forgetting about scripting.. I'm one of those sysadmins who doesn't do it
...
pauska: DELETE THE INTERNET RIGHT NOW.
Seriously, we don't have enough stuff here to invest time in scripts
@PeterGrace Flagged for brining mods into it
14:42
@pauska: at all ? o0
@pauska is on the way to a site ban, not for his antics but for lack of scripting!
abeit - we use GPO like it's the worlds best hook... hm.. worlds best car, or something like that
@pauska ....
@MDMarra No! I live in the past!
I forgot about this, this is good, time for another peer pressure session!
14:43
god what did I start now
dont you mention me by name Kyle!!
not again!!
@pauska: there's nothing you need to run repeatedly?
I gotta stick with @pauska with this though, my shop is too small for any type of scripting as well.
@JourneymanGeek No, not really.. we have a few registry "resets" in gpo, but thats it
/me starts work on "Why Pauska <insert email address here> should be scripting" blog.sf post
scripting isn't about size.
14:44
@PeterGrace But socks are....
If you think that you're too small to script common tasks, you're secretly procrastinating
@JourneymanGeek Also, just about everything here is virtualized, so we have templates who are just about ready to use
I'm more like "SCRIPT ALL THE THINGS" myself.
If i've had to do it twice, it's worth scripting :)
if you're scripting, you've realised you're lazy, and have accepted the truth
That, or, you're afraid of replacing yourself with scripts, which is a really pervasive and common viewpoint.
14:45
no, not at all
trust me on this guys.. we have like 600 users in total in this corp
are you kidding? I had tons of shit automated in a company of 50
100% of them are on terminal services opening up 3 applications at a maximum..
@PeterGrace: be quiet, or someone will replace you with a very small shell script?
pfo
pfo
@pauska script are the basic level that also captures what you do to your machines, it is (albeit not a good one) a method to capture your config in a document(=script)
yes, but that was for your own enjoyment
14:45
@JourneymanGeek heh, still awesome.
I personally would only consider a "not worth scripting" argument from someone fluent in scripting
@pauska not so much -- it made documentation easier in case I got hit by a bus.
pfo
pfo
@KyleBrandt +1
Yeah ok - it makes it easier to replace staff
@TylerShads @pauska Not sure which is more appropriate: "SON I DISSAPOINT", or "Y U NO"
14:46
oh go to hell all of you
:D
It's easier to say "When new guy is hired, run 'provision_stuff.cmd <username>' to set their permissions and generate their home share directories with all the right security'
pfo
pfo
@pauska no, it doesn't because the script doesn't contain why you do things you do.
i'm crappy at scripting. I still use a few wonderfully ugly ones
@PeterGrace Well ok, I can admit that creating a user here is a tedious task at times, but thats only because they're cheap and wont let me buy signature generators and stuff like that
@PeterGrace Indeed. because we don't always use ldap. This can come in very handy :)
14:47
You know, this would make a very interesting blog post. @KyleBrandt should write it.
@jscott Dissapoint sure, I don't script, but as a good programming, scripting is no big deal for me. Y U NO is because everything that needs to be automated is automated in one way or another so I don't need to script anything. Half of what I do is "ZOMG ITS BORKED PLZ HALP" and getting this place into the year 2000
TOUGH LOVE
Stating that scripting is useful/worth the time in EVERY sysadmin position is complete and utter bullshit
I'd volunteer but I'm still staring at an empty notepad session trying to think of what to write for WiFi - Part 2.
@PeterGrace Why would you have notepad open when you already said you have gvim?
14:48
@scottpack notepad++, I prefer it when I don't need the heavy awesome of gvim.
@pauska True. You can't script everything, but deployments, regular checks, resolutions to common problems should be scripted imo.
@ScottPack To share DOS line-ending compatible files with the rest of the Windows-using team?
@PeterGrace make it about guest provisioning with Aruba Airwave, so that I don't have to learn it. Thanks.
@jscott unix2dos!
@ScottPack That's a wonderful tool.. I've used it thousands of times
14:49
@ScottPack Running under XCygwin!
I believe scripting is a fundamental skill of system administration.
(And unix2dos ofcourse)
@KyleBrandt Please make that an answer so we may +1 it.
@KyleBrandt I believe not being named Kyle is a fundamental skill of being a cool person.
4
@PeterGrace I think you mean provision_stuff.ps1 :)
14:50
@MDMarra :s/ps1/sh/g
@MDMarra believe it or not, my powershell-fu is not as good as my bat/cmd
though I will admit that my bash scripting is far better than either of those two.
I have one thing to say to you: |
I've only been scripting in PS since september and it's coming along nicely. :)
@MDMarra :)
@BartDeVos :s/provision.*$/Step 1) Insert cobbler disc\nStep 2) Drink coffee/
@ScottPack I think you mean PXE boot to Cobbler, right?
14:53
@MDMarra I haven't bothered to set up the pxe stuff yet.
I don't provision enough to need to bother.
Is niiiiiiice /borat
I tried installing illumos yesterday on one of my esxi boxes. Shit didn't even boot.
by the way, devops_borat on twitter is fucking hysterical
Getting tired of shit not booting!
@PeterGrace Once you start the transition to PowerShell, you will wonder how you ever got along with the cmd.exe built-ins.
14:55
@jscott I bet... I will eventually start digging deeper, but I'm sort of falling into a desktop support role here, so I'm not needing to script as much.
@PeterGrace I'm thankfull for the aliases :)
ls does what you want it to do
@PeterGrace Oh no
Eh, I don't mind desktop support.
but
you have to deal with...users...
I keep trying to deny that I'm a people person but as I get older I'm having to shed the whole "introvert" thing.
14:58
@MDMarra: Had top opposite reaction to devops_borat
@PeterGrace I'd tell you to start with standardization, but developers hate that like nothing else.
Every time it ends up in my stream I think "That isn't really funny"
Huh, someone tweeted about my wifi blog post
I dont think he's a serverfaultie either.
@KyleBrandt I just saw it yesterday and read a bunch in a row
OK FINE YOU TWATS I'll start learning powershell.. when I get a new consultant on my team (one month~)
14:59
@pauska do it
but all you who pointed fingers me - get ready for babysitting! I'll abuse you for info
I love being abused
3
hahah, he said abuse
@pauska Be my guest :)
@PeterGrace kinky
14:59
Instead of using MDT to image our labs, I have a slick powershell script that I just call from an answer file
I'll bring the clothespins if you supply the candles!
So much easier with way less overhead
