Q: how do I find my phone number from my internet line

yaar zeigermanI have a computer connected to the internet. I need to find out what the phone number is on that line but can not connect a phone. Is there some way using the internet and the computer connected to that line.

@Magellan yeah and their balancers are pretty good, I was surprised when started working with F5s

A certain Fortune 100 parks & media company uses those and screwed up our project for 2 weeks. Had to call in F5 to fix it for them.
laterz. time for me to run.

Oh my god... WTF is happening... I... I'm suddenly able to use the ipv6 internet!!

@RyanRies Welcome to 2006.

@MichaelHampton Yeah, yeah, I know, it's just that I'm talking about my Uverse residential connection, and they never gave me an IPv6 allocation that I know of...

12:06 AM
@RyanRies native DirectAccess then. pwn!

@pauska No shit... do want.
But this may be a false alarm...
I'm thinking maybe a case of DNS redirection
What address do you guys get for ipv6.google.com ?

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ipv6.l.google.com
Address: 2a00:1450:400f:801::1014
Aliases: ipv6.google.com

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ipv6.l.google.com
Address: 2607:f8b0:400c:c03::93
Aliases: ipv6.google.com

$ host www.google.com
www.google.com has IPv6 address 2607:f8b0:4006:802::1011

@MichaelHampton @Cole still watching.

12:10 AM
I'll be damned... I get 2607:f8b0:4000:805::1010 ...

I, too, get 1010

Address:  2607:f8b0:4009:802::1011

but
2607:f8b0:400a:800::1010

@RyanRies You can look up IPv6 addresses without IPv6. They're just AAAA records in the DNS.

12:12 AM
@MichaelHampton I can do more than just look them up, I can ping them and get a reply!

@ewwhite But they're really awesome rollerskates!
@RyanRies Oh, well, in that case...

@ewwhite Why all the SVN hate?
I don't get it

But my residential gateway has no IPv6 address...

I also don't get what's so whizz bang you beaut about Git either

At least it doesn't show one

12:14 AM
@RyanRies windows, if I recall, automatically does teredo if available

@MarkHenderson Maybe you just don't git it, get it?

@MarkHenderson do anything with the version history locally & cheaply rather than querying the server for anything

@FalconMomot Yes, that appears to be the case, I'm just stupidly trying to figure out how it managed to make itself work with no configuration...

C:\Users\Administrator>tracert 2607:f8b0:4000:805::1010

looks likely to be teredo to me.

How did my PC automatically figure out how to route to Hurricane Electric?
he.net...

yeah
there is an address

@RyanRies Ewwww, teredo.

in the distance

@MichaelHampton I really liked it.

12:16 AM
which is multihomed

@MarkHenderson Not sure, but it's just outdated, it seems.

@pauska oh FFS - fucking Remedy

@MarkHenderson Ever tried to do a merge?

@RyanRies Maybe your ISP is doing a 6v4 tunnel

@NathanC Nope, not the ISP.

12:18 AM
@MichaelHampton Often
We often have 3 peoples working on the same file at once. Most of the time it merges just fine but sometimes requires some manual intervention

Well, either that or @RyanRies is running a tunnel and forgot about it :P
That's what those ping times seem to indicate...

@NathanC It's called Teredo.
In computer networking, Teredo is a transition technology that gives full IPv6 connectivity for IPv6-capable hosts which are on the IPv4 Internet but which have no direct native connection to an IPv6 network. Compared to other similar protocols its distinguishing feature is that it is able to perform its function even from behind network address translation (NAT) devices such as home routers. Teredo operates using a platform independent tunneling protocol designed to provide IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) connectivity by encapsulating IPv6 datagram packets within IPv4 User Datagram P...

Oh, right...

Right, right, I get that it's a Teredo tunnel... I'm just surprised that it set itself up. I've built IPv4 to IPv6 tunnels manually to Hurricane Electric... but I swear this one set itself up. :P

@DanilaLadner seattle woot woot

12:22 AM
@RyanRies It's meant to set itself up automatically.

@RyJones fanboy :P

And you will probably curse the day you first heard of Teredo.

@DennisKaarsemaker I am IN Seattle right now, but I will mock @Magellan for his eastside hatred... since he left to go to a party on the eastside

I've known about it for years a "transition technology" ... tunneling is obviously not my first choice... I'm still thinking my ISP must be doing something funky, such as setting up a tunnel on their end, because I used to not be able to get past my own residential gateway/router with an ipv6 address.

@RyJones well, bellevue sucks
or so I heard

12:24 AM
@DennisKaarsemaker yeah I don't go to Bellevue

we're moving our seattle office there

My router doesn't support ipv6...it's an older belkin

wanna go get drunk in Redmond? I'm leaving downtown seattle like... right now.

so I have to go there for a week :/

the modem/router TWC gave me does, but its wireless is shitty

12:25 AM
still at work, babysitting maintenance

@DennisKaarsemaker dude get them to take you to that one place and put it on the expense report
$200 prime rib

My Cisco 2621 manufactured in 1999 does ipv6 just fine, but I don't use it because it's an ancient hair-dryer

@RyanRies your ISP decided to start routing the teredo gateway address.
that's all.

@RyanRies Probably, but it has a security hole I could drive a truck through. Actually probably more than one. Don't even attempt IPv6 on it.

Yeah, my level of surprise is dwindling... I was just shocked at first when I got an ICMP echo reply back from an IPv6 address and I have no tunnels of my own set up.

12:30 AM
@RyanRies Windows was being helpful, of course.

This sort of gives it away in the traceroute: 1 471 ms 89 ms * 6to4.ash1.he.net [2001:470:0:136::2]

Yep, HE has a Teredo relay.

Defending SVN in the face of distributed version control is like trying to run a datacentre on VirtualBox.

@Andrew heh true
mercurial and bazaar is the shit.
git is ok too
but svn just never works for me

12:40 AM
@MichaelHampton Not seeing anything in there that we could benefit from to be honest. Not with the amount of time it will take to get everyone trained on the new system
I'm sure Git is amazing and polishes your balls and makes unicorn sparkles - but for us I'm not convinced it's worth it
Mainly because I'm not seeing any of the troubles that git "fixes" in our organisation

@MichaelHampton @Cole I watched the whole damn thing.

@ewwhite Comments?

@ewwhite 26 minutes in right now.

@MichaelHampton Some things are good... some things I disagree with.

@ewwhite He has a bitchin' beard though.

12:46 AM
Yeah, the beard...

I don't fully agree with everything being scripted... Nor do I expect that most good admins spend 50% or more time in their respective editors.

I have an editor (usually more than one) open all day.

Config management is very good, though. He made good points on it.

You expect a good admin spends 50% or more of their time on reddit, then?

@ewwhite I think it depends on what you mean by editor though

12:47 AM
vim

That's an editor.

50% is a bit much
I spend like 25%

Now, if you spend 50% or more of your time putting out fires, then perhaps you wouldn't be in an editor much.

Mark git is faster, repos take less space, is fully distributed, branches are light, there are quite a lot of advantages in my opinion

@DanilaLadner One of the engineers was complaining about git earlier
I said "If you're a svn guy, git will seem completely alien, you have to throw out all of your svn knowledge"

12:49 AM
@MichaelHampton for my consulting clients, I may spend time in monitoring dashboards... but on average, I log onto my client's systems a couple of times a week.

But then again depends on the environment you have or want to have to deal with

maybe..

I fucking destroyed that roast beef sandwich.

things should run themselves... OpenNMS monitoring has been a godsend in that respect.

with GLUTEN FREE BREAD and VEGAN CHEESE!

12:49 AM
@JoelESalas too many white girls.
3

@ewwhite Am I allowed to say chuch

I've seen people complain about git as can and does get complex, but that happens in heave development env in software company

@ewwhite It only works bolded

Most of the talk is good.
I think I've passed some of that level, as I've had to do a lot of non-admin type things.

the soft-skills and being able to sell ideas is important...
Typing, i dont agree with... but I'm a shitty typist.

I'm doing at least 110 wpm

@MichaelHampton yeah, not me.

@MichaelHampton Mercy form heaven!

@ewwhite I would definitely encourage you to rethink your stance on typing. It helps...a lot.

12:55 AM
I think I'm<-see type okay... but it's not consistently high. I just don't type that much.

A lot of what ZZ Top is talking about would apply to non-Linux sysadmins just as well.

I also DO believe in vendor loyalty.

I am vendor loyal, i only buy durex

I mean, I've used a good number, but one source consistently... EVERY sysadmin job I've ever had has ended up with HP gear from my primary vendor.

@DanilaLadner Rough Riders 4 lyfe.

12:57 AM
yeah actually, i like HP servers.

@jscott oh wow, i did not even think such existed.

@jscott and dude, female condoms...
@DanilaLadner as you should. HP gear has a learning curve, but it DOES work.

@ewwhite I've never met a female that actually used a female condom. Have you?

@jscott Yah!

1:01 AM
@ewwhite So go on, how was it?

but do the @JoelESalas thing... bareback and all...

@ewwhite Bareback in LA... Doomed

@jscott odd... but kinda okay. Can be more sensitive for partner and resolves some of the complications that guys have getting strapped up

@jscott Hey man, live a little

@jscott Oh, and people like them for buttsecx, too.

1:06 AM
yeah, i saw the reviews

1:22 AM
Holy crap, this rain.

@ShaneMadden Oh wow, that's unreal!

@jscott Yeah, it's pretty crazy

I thought your twits about the weather warnings were complaints about the app screwing up, not actual, life-threatening weather events. My apologies.

@ShaneMadden "In 1000 feet, go swimming."

@jscott Just an indecisive national weather service! I'm fine where I'm at, just a lot of water. But some friends are in evac areas and my last job's office is probably flooded.

1:34 AM
I guess I'd better take this flash flood warning seriously, then?

@MichaelHampton Ehh.. maybe.

why mac power adapter always gets so hot
is it normal?

I live at the top of a hill. So unless I'm going out (I'm not) I generally ignore the flood warnings here.

@MichaelHampton Yeah, I'm on the side of a hill. Plenty of places for the water to go other than in my house.

@DanilaLadner My IBM/Lenovo adapters get pretty damn hot, not melting-the-plastic-hot, but I wouldn't want to keep the block on my lap or anything.

1:37 AM
yeah, this one i can't even hold in my hand for a long time.

@DanilaLadner: you're obviously holding it wrong ;)

@ShaneMadden holy crap!
why are the edges so straight on the road on the far side....

@MattBear Probably slabs
or expansion gaps

Not sure. There was a closer picture of that..

1:55 AM
The construction crew probably stopped surfacing at that point one afternoon.

Road? What road?

This one's like.. a mile north of my house:

wow where is it?

that is similar to what happened here in Alberta recently

were there people in the cars?

2:07 AM
@DanilaLadner At one point, almost certainly.
That isn't a parking lot.

right, I mean at the time of the road going down

Somewhere... here-ish: maps.google.com/…

I always get so many job requirements from Boulder, CO . Is it a tech mecca there?

Oh, I should hope not. It looks like the blue truck was the only one that fell from the road. guessing by the water, it looks like its flowing "away" from the photographer. The white pickup and silver grand am[?] probably washed down stream in the flooding.

@DanilaLadner There's a pretty good bit of startup type stuff.

2:12 AM
I would get some HPC linux engineer for some fed agencies.
or rhel cluster shit also from there

@DanilaLadner Maybe NIST or NOAA.. not sure of any others up there.

oh noaa is the weather gov agency, right?

@DanilaLadner Yup

Thank you interweb...and you British folk...
Live stream of the Jets NE game!

@TheCleaner Is that not available on OTA television or cable?

2:18 AM
i am watching it on tv
but jets are going down

I know there are some silly blackout rules for some sports.

@jscott I think it's only on NFL Network...but this stream is just that live...but it's halftime so Sky Sports is doing their own feed until it starts up again.
@DanilaLadner blasphemy!
but my link is technically a hacked stream of Sky Sports streaming NFL Network...gotta love the web

@TheCleaner Next time you want to see any sports event go to this site
it is russian, but has english version as well
and there are might be just higher quality links

Nice...thanks!

@jscott I doubt it's the case, but Stations within 75 miles of the stadium may not broadcast a NFL Game that isn't 85% Soldout (just lowered this year from 90%).

2:26 AM
Ouch - a friend of mine might have killed his '13 WRX driving through flood waters.

@ChrisS Yeah, I don't follow closely enough to understand the nuances of localized blackout rules... But I have a good gue$$. :)

not good. Had an 02 WRX (pre-ordered before they got here in the States)...but only kept it for a year or 2.

subaru is my favorite car

@jscott I'm only aware as the Detroit Lions had a hard time hitting 90%, just about ever game, last year.

@ShaneMadden colorado?

2:31 AM
@TheCleaner Yup

@ChrisS I live in Buffalo Bill area, I've heard complaints of the blackout rules in years past.
I don't know where Bills v Lions rates on the charts, but it seems like such a weird thing to not show the games to locals.
Everyone is just going to place their bets anyway, and watch ESPN for highlights... may as well give the true [local] fans an option to see the whole game.

@jscott i completely agree.

@ShaneMadden We have a mfg plant in Englewood and they said it's pretty brutal

did anyone of you guys played poker online when it was available in US?

The rain broke the ecosystem. I have aquatic critters threatening me on the sidewalk now. http://t.co/N750h57bSn

2:36 AM
wow

@DanilaLadner My degenerate gambler friends[1] loved online poker! [1] Note: Said friends may not be actual degenerates.
I've never tried it. And I've only played poker, in real life, maybe a handful of times.

i did play in Atlantic City for fun

@jscott I work too damn hard for my money to give it away in a card game
Especially if I'm giving it away to a casino. Fuck that.

but worked with the guy who played seriously online
well in poker you play other players
but you do pay rake

@MarkHenderson Yeah, I can't get into gambling either. Even my friend who pushes blackjack... I don't care that it's 51:49, it's just not an enjoyable way to spend money on something.

2:51 AM
@jscott They do have an option, buy tickets and go.... That's the NFL's reasoning anyway.

@magellan Im offended. I've never managed Remedy. :P

One of the best talks at today's conference, guy plugged FreeBSD.

3:07 AM
plugged into wall outlet?
i need to be up 5-30 am to upgrade f5s fucking hell

@DanilaLadner Hahahaha
Have you done it before?

was I up @5-30?

I've been up at 5:30AM. It sucks.

@DanilaLadner No, the F5 upgrade

it dooes. i agree

3:14 AM
I assume you mean BIG-IPs?

f5, yeah
it just creates another partition
that's not that bad.
the fact of 5-30 is killing me

@DanilaLadner I used to have to get up at 5.30 every day just to get to work on time
I still get up at 6.30 every day to get to work on time

I roll out of bed by 7:30 to get to work on time.

@ChrisS 6.30 get up, 7.10 out the door, 7.30 at my desk
40 minutes is just enough time to eat breakfast, read the headlines, have a shower, jerk off, get dressed.

Ah, I don't get to work until 8:30. So same schedule generally... different time zone

3:27 AM
I have to get up by noon to get to work on time...oh wait.

@MichaelHampton Lucky you. I literally cannot sleep in past 8am, even if by some magical event everyone else is still asleep then
Normally we have a "visitor" to our bedroom at between 7 and 7.30

@MarkHenderson i like the "jerk off" part
i thought i was the only one doing it before work

@DanilaLadner I have a pregnant wife and a 3 year old son. I don't have the time, energy or privacy to have sex :(
But I tell you what - pregnant sex is fucking awesome. Maybe it's just because during pregnancy you get it even less than usual, or maybe because their boobs get bigger, or maybe because of the emotional connection that something of yours is growing inside them. Not sure. But it's great.

Hmmm... I have hot wife, kids 7 and 11 years olds and still do it.
a habit from college

Printing account statements.... Being treasurer would be so much more fun if I got to keep any of the money I collect.

3:32 AM
Yeah, i liked preggy sex. I thought it was weird to feel that way, but it really was awesome

@DanilaLadner Haha well good for you. After about 5.30am it's too dangerous to have sex because my son could come in at any moment. And it takes him till about 9.30 to be asleep and by 9.30 I'm almost ready for sleep

we even had it on 8th month
very slow and gentle

@DanilaLadner Nope, not weird. We did it all the way up to the end of the 3rd trimester

Would also help if everyone would pay their f---ing dues on time (or anything even remotely close to on time)

@ChrisS Money is overrated.

3:33 AM
Sex is also good for inducing labour, because the hormones found in semen are the same as the ones that the body produces to indicate that it's time to give birth

@DanilaLadner Said like someone who has it.

Well, like 2 20$ bills in my wallet, sure
it is quite wealthy for Laos

@DanilaLadner Ohhh 40 bucks. That's half a tank of petrol :p

Well in Laos they use donkeys, so no worries about petrol
they even substitute prostitutes with donkeys and quite happy about it.

@DanilaLadner Wow. Laos sounds like an interesting place
But, do they substitute donkeys for prostitutes?

3:37 AM
Oh, joy of joys - I somehow managed to hit 10k rep across all sites, though not SF, and I can see chat flags now. for every room on SE.

Wait, I think we just said the same thing :P
@FalconMomot Yep. Pretty shitty system, so now you can see all the crap that people get offended about

no not really
meaning riding to the town on the back of prostitute?

@DanilaLadner Haha no, I mean visiting a brothel and being presented with some donkeys

what does the -5 rep item "user was removed" mean? I got that on mSO somehow.

@MarkHenderson We get to see all the flags... People over 10k get randomly selected last I knew.

3:39 AM
@FalconMomot You had an upvote from a user. That user was destroyed. You lost the vote from them.
@ChrisS Aahh

oh, weirdness.

In bangladesh, for 1$ you not only screw the girl, but she also will carry the luggage to the airport.

@DanilaLadner Not that I would ever pay for sex, but $1 for someone to take my luggage to the airport sounds pretty good

@MarkHenderson exactly.

@DanilaLadner That's only useful is she's a girl I would want to screw...

3:41 AM
@ChrisS and/or carry your luggage.

@ChrisS doesn't the fact that she will screw anyone for $1 kind of exclude her from that set, hypothetically?

@DanilaLadner I don't trust people that don't charge enough.... My luggage is worth significantly more than $1.
@FalconMomot I would think so. But I haven't met her, so I couldn't say with any certainty.

@ChrisS You are the reason people buy things like OID

There's girls at strip clubs who will do all kinds of things for much less than you'd think. =]

well, in bangladesh, it is a monthly salary for the guy working at a steel plant

3:43 AM
@FalconMomot OID?

... I actually worked for a company where we seriously discussed making our software more expensive so people would take us more seriously
@ChrisS oracle internet directory

did that strategy work out?

I dunno - we didn't think it was right, so we didn't do it

You could double the price, and then let your sales people negotiate discounts up to 50%.

people do that!

3:47 AM
@DanilaLadner Bangladesh: Minimum wage is $43/mo, and median is about $100/mo in 2012 and 2009 respectively. Not sure where you're getting your data...

OK, "Post as guest" has GOT TO GO.

@ChrisS Well okay, not 1$, but 10$

@FalconMomot My logic doesn't apply to software. Software does whatever it's programmed to do. People constantly re-evaluate their intentions based on the opportunities and perceived risk.
@DanilaLadner Where's the $10 come from?

Laos is 36$ median monthly payment
So just imagine if you would offer 30% of median us income to us prostitute, it is around 1,000US, she would probably would agree on carrying your luggage as well

@DanilaLadner And both of them would steal anything of value in it

3:55 AM
yeah, they could.
alright have a great day all, i am off to bed.

4:27 AM
@MichaelHampton It does.

4:40 AM
evenin' gents.

5:01 AM
Woo, more flash flood warnings

Q: How many "bad" questions come from unregistered users versus registered users?

Michael HamptonTo quote from mSO, since my request is pretty much identical: I would like to have statistics for the quality of posts coming from unregistered versus registered accounts on my site. It is my suspicion that people who are willing to put out the effort to register an account will also...

@MichaelHampton Whoah
How did you you get official stats from an SE employee so fast?

Bribery.

Being nice.
3
Q: Please add UserType to Stack Exchange Data Explorer

Michael HamptonSo that we can construct queries which take into account whether a user is registered or unregistered, please add the UserType field to Data Explorer. Currently there is no way to do this, since the field is not exposed:

@MichaelHampton fwiw in my comment I sound a bit negative, but just playing devils advocate. I don't see why unregistered users should be asking questions. A lot of them are drive-by questions as well I bet

5:12 AM
@MarkHenderson Ultimately I think I'm going to propose that SE get rid of "unregistered users" entirely.
And yes I know that's been shot down before.

@MichaelHampton Lowering the bar == more eyes on the pages == more advertising revenue

Pretty cynical. And quite possibly true. I have long suspected that idiots click on ads at a much higher rate than normal people...

@MichaelHampton s/click on/see/

The thing is, you need good content to bring in the idiots....

@MichaelHampton I did some math on that and posted it as another answer

5:18 AM
If your content starts sucking, people will stop sharing and linking to it, and your search engine ranking will decline over time. Then the idiots will stop coming and seeing the ads.

it might be illustrative

A: How many "bad" questions come from unregistered users versus registered users?

Falcon MomotAn interesting conclusion that can be drawn from Shog9's numbers is that only 11% of bad questions are asked by unregistered users (21% of bad answers are). Removing unregistered users would cut the appearance of bad content on the site by 7%, assuming none of them registered. Also, disposing o...

er, cut by 13%. I can math, I swear.

That assumes that "good" == "not bad"; if "good" is more strictly defined (upvoted, accepted etc.) the percentage of good content loss caused by removing unregistered users could be far lower. — Andrew 8 secs ago
or do the stats already show that?
as I see it, content on the site is in 3 categories: signal, noise, and DC offset.

there is that in-between category of things that don't get any attention at all
but people tend to be more stingy with answer downvotes and it's harder to get rid of answers, and the data doesn't reflect an obvious bias from that

6:00 AM
@FalconMomot that's the DC offset

hey guys
I need a blog post topic
My gut reaction is to bitch about capistrano for like 2000 words

you could blog about x86 anti-emulation hacks, or about ipv6 transitional technologies...

@FalconMomot Both oppressively boring

@JoelESalas yup
I'm trying to get some motivation to write up the former myself :P

@JoelESalas Bitch about low sysadmin pay.

1 hour later…
7:16 AM
Can anyone write a tag wiki for serverfault.com/questions/tagged/pat ?

@MichaelHampton, given that the majority of our questions come from SO users then the majority of question askers will be registered.

I think more pertinent is that out of every 35 or so good questions posted, only one of them comes from an unregistered user.
however, in a sample of 20 answers that end up downvoted or deleted, 4 of them have come from unregistered users.

@FalconMomot I haven't done a poll recently but I've done 6 where I looked at the 50 newest questions; never less than 55% came from people with SO accounts the maximum was 79% and for all bar one it was >70%
and I don't think we close enough

@Iain we close a lot. I close as much as I can.

@FalconMomot there aren't enough people who care sufficiently - there are ~300 people with v-t-c privilege; in a good month maybe 50 will use it and perhaps only 20 or so use it with any regularity

I run out of close votes frequently. For example, right now I see 25 Qs in the close queue.
