7:02 PM
@voretaq7 i have an andriod ... sooo :)

@Mario I think android/google maps caches directions. I've turned my phone into airplane while under GPS navigation, turned off the highway, and drove 1.5 miles before google maps couldn't "recalculate" my route anymore.

@Zypher sooo instead of Apple tracking your every thought Google does it instead? :)

yes, but they already have my email, so i'm pretty much fucked anyway
basically it's a "well one company already has a jack into the back of the head, why have two doing that? "

i would think they would account for wifi only ipads in maps

@Zypher Redundancy?

7:06 PM
find out tonight if they release the beta to the developers. the site is down right now...

@Mario WiFi iPads don't have GPS so they don't count :)

they have passive gps i think

@Mario they have the WiFi location service stuff -- it's pretty godawful
also GPS by nature is passive :)

Speaking of the passive nature of GPS, has anyone heard of the precision and possible selective availability in the new constellation of GPS satellites?

The other big problem with offline maps besides location awareness is caching the map images -- How long do we keep them? how many tiles away do we grab? Do we grab at one zoom level, or all of them? etc.
@JohnK there are new (US Navy) GPS satellites going up?
or is this some other .gov getting into the biznez?

7:12 PM
That was just froma quick google search
but yeah, they're working on upgrading hte current system

@JohnK yeah those are destined to be the Block 3 GPS satellites

Yeah, block III's were what I was thinking off

Accuracy is supposed to be about the same as WAAS GPS
(±1M)

Cool cool
Last I heard a few months back, someone was mentioning 100 ft accuracy, with a reintroduced SA signal - I didn't believe them at the time, but I wasn't sure

@JohnK Unlikely - The FAA is big on GPS as part of the next-generation ATC project, and re-implementing SA would make GPS almost completely unusable for air navigation with the FAA's required performance criteria.

7:18 PM
SA's not coming back.
At least in terms of intentional scrambling on the provider side. The alternate encrypted signal is still there and I think provides for validating the signal against spoofing for military users.

@JeffFerland never say never -- it would totally fuck the world over, but if ZOMG TERRORISTS...

@voretaq7 That's exactly why I doubted the guy saying that. There's no way we could ever go back to that level of error in GPS

and yes there is still an encrypted band signal that military receivers can use for RAIM - the rest of us get second-class integrity checks.

@voretaq7 There's only one thing that can trump the terrorist card and that's taking away bread and circuses. If Grandma's iPhone map isn't working right because of some politician, that fucker's going down.

@voretaq7 If you'd stop spiking my litter box with red pepper flakes, maybe I'd be more tidy. Seriously, that burns, =[
@Zypher Suit up:

7:21 PM
@JeffFerland not if it's protecting granny from the mean man in the desert! Never underestimate the stupidity of the american populace: We put up with the fucking TSA, we'll pretty much bend over for anything the government wants at this point.

@voretaq7 Fair enough. Never does make many people a fool.

not that the politicians would last long after it, but the policy probably wouldn't go anywhere -- the whole reason the TSA is still around is no politician has the gonads to step up and say "This shit does not work, and it inconveniences everyone in the process of not working. Let's get rid of it."

I'm really enjoying that this is the first question I've answered since changing my gravatar:
1
Q: How can I lock out remote user from their own computer?

MattThey usually connect to our network by a VPN. Right now there is just the (password protected) Administrator account and their domain user account on the laptop. Windows 7 and Server 2008R2 in use here. I want to change their password or disable/lock their account and have it take immediate effe...

@JeffFerland "Where are my files?"

7:23 PM
That's about as fitting as it gets.

whats the difference between a first level domain on stack exchange like serverfault.com compared to a subdomain like diy.stackexchange.com - just size of the site or lack of available good domain names? (or something else)

@JeffFerland Send me a pic of your cat and I can frame him nicely.

just curious - i frequent diy.stackexchange.com
ie: why isn't serverfault serverfault.stackexchange.com

For the benefit of the newb - what's with the red devil phones?

@sam Would you still recommend Zimbra? Re, your answer to this question
@JohnK BOFH week

7:24 PM
@JohnK because we're special (part of the trilogy: StackOverflow, ServerFault, SuperUser)

13
Q: BOFH Gravatar Week

WardThis is your chance to show your true colours... Use the (semi-) official Bastard Operator From Hell Gravatar for a week or a while. I don't think there's any particular reason, it just seemed like a good idea.

Though @WesleyDavid got mine wrong, so I refuse to conform

@JohnK we're Satanists.
(evil piggies - semi-safe for work (no sex, gratuitous violence, kinda loud))

@WesleyDavid I'll have to do that when I get home

@TylerShads Fine, fine...

7:25 PM
@TylerShads Hahahaha I was waiting for the BOFH tag, I knew it was coming

@WesleyDavid that's better ^^
dick

Wait, I failed... lemme try that again...

@Mario In the beginning there was Stack Overflow, and it was good. So they decided to create Super User and Server Fault. They too were good. So they decided to sell the framework, and that was bad. Then they came up with SE 2.0, and the Area51 concept. And it is Okay so far... Gaming.SE has become popular and so it will become Arqade.com, and we'll see if that becomes good too.

There. Better.

So I may have just tagged a question BOFH :D
4

7:27 PM
@JeffFerland Meta tag! All questions are bastard questions! :)

@ChrisS cool

@WesleyDavid thank ya, waiting on the refresh

@TylerShads We still have a few hold outs though :sticks toungue out at @voretaq7:

@WesleyDavid um, mine's updated kitty. Clear your caches.
pwned kitty.

@voretaq7 You're a BSD guy so all updates take forever.

7:30 PM
5 hours ago, by Basil
I was born a brown snowflake and I'll die a brown snowflake.

@Basil Is that what the dude said to Patton when he left?

@Mario mathoverflow.net <-- SE 1.0 Site

@voretaq7 And I do see that sorry excuse for a BOFHatar. I refuse to acknowledge compliance until you use the better framed one.

There we go

@ScottPack Not a history buff, and they don't teach about americans in the mandatory history courses in canada.

7:32 PM
@Basil Bloody Pacifists. =P

@Basil Don't worry about it, they don't do it down here either.

@Basil They should. You bastards burned down our White House.

@WesleyDavid nein. I am a full bastard.

@Hyppy That, they teach :P

@Hyppy this is why Canadians have to use electric kettles.

7:33 PM
@Hyppy ayup - how's it going ?

Uh oh @ewwhite You've got a celebrity impersonator:

@Hyppy Dude. The mental dissonance created by that handle and that gravatar.....

@WesleyDavid besides I pinned your post.

BOFH's vote!

Did I use someone else's gravatar? I thought they were freely available from the meta topic :-P

Damn! I'm 8th in voting this year?

RE: what I asked Sam before, anyone else have any experience to Zimbra? Just want to get a feel for the product before I delve too deep into researching it.

@JeffFerland I may or may not have used my multiple throw away accounts to upboat spam that post.

I feel it's a fantastic way to promote the site

@Hyppy Badass Operator from Hell is AKA @ewwhite although he's so nice he's really Boffo Operator from Hammond.

7:37 PM
@JeffFerland Odd post to choose for the "BOFH Week" image

@TylerShads I've pondered moving us over to it. I'm the only one here with the slightest clue how to run CyrusIMAP & Postfix. If something happened to me, they'd be fucked.

@WesleyDavid Gotya. Gonna have to make a new one then :-D

@Adrian I'm only on google apps at the moment, which was a patch job, id much rather have it internal, but Exchange seems like an annoyance to set-up properly with just myself working on it. This being run by VMWare and natively made for being online seems like a better idea.

@faker Suit up (will also tweet at you):

I'm more asking is it worth delving into, or is Google Apps the best I'm going to get for the money vs trying to implement this open source thing (which, I might have to end up buying the 'network' edition anyway.

7:41 PM
@TylerShads Yeah, we're much too large for anything except a big Exchange server or IMAP/SMTP on Linux.
462 users right now, hiring another 50 over the next 3 weeks.

hmmm, i have about ~30 workstations. but if they want emails for every employee, id have about ~400

@TylerShads Zimbra can't be administered as a hobby for a small domain, IMO. I tried it with my own consultancy and it takes care and feeding unless you get it hosted.

Which at that point, would require me to look into CA's which I have no experience with, yay :P

What's wrong with exchange?

@Basil It would be the only MS service we offer?

7:44 PM
I'm eyeing Zimbra for when I have time to replace our qmail monstrosity

@Adrian Have you looked at Office 365?

@Basil Nothing inherently, I'm just wondering if for my relatively small shop if there's something cheaper/easier to implement with web-mail.

@voretaq7 My complaint was Postfix. I much prefer Exim. Anything is better than sendmail though. =P

@TylerShads you can always do a hosted exchange - rackspace.com/apps/email_hosting/exchange_hosting

-------------------Did anyone find a ADM template editor? --------------------

7:44 PM
They have pretty good pricing for edu/nonprofit and they handle everything

(Zimbra is built upon Postfix)
@Mario Rackspace does awesome Hosted Exchange. I used them for a 18 month contract with a small business and loved it.

I'm starting to really appreciate how much I used color to differentiate who was talking
7

@JeffFerland RED!

@Mario that wouldn't go well with the boss. The fact that he had to sign an NDA for a GPS company that hooks into our dispatch program was a 3 month uphill battle. Only reason he likes google apps is because its google.

@WesleyDavid i use their cloud servers for personal projects - much easier / cheaper (IMHO) than amazon

7:46 PM
Cloud is fine for any sized workforce, so long as you're willing to let them work in the cloud. If you require email to be managed by the company, then you probably won't get your money's worth trying to scale some sort of open email solution

@TylerShads rackspace is one of the biggest hosts in the world. very reliable / reputable

exchange is the de-facto standard, after notes, and there are no new notes installations these days. Only ancient monstrosities that will never die.

@Mario i know that, tell an old cobol programmer that, however

@mario Suit up:

7:47 PM
@Basil We killed our notes install at $JOB[-1] about 4 years ago

There we go, much better

DOWN WITH NOTES

@MDMarra Lotus never dies.

@MDMarra You and @vCole should start a club.

@WesleyDavid i was gonna make one but i'm pretty new here - didnt want to over extend (any more than i already do :) )

7:47 PM
Happens all the time- we are in the process of doing it now, but some companies are too large to switch from notes

@Mario BOFHs are characterized by over extended. DO EEEET!

@Basil You're never too big!
haha

Not to mention, he wants it inhouse, we're already paying for Google apps, but I have 'til september (when our contract runs out) to at least get us close to an in house solution, so rackspace would just be a step sideways from that perspective.

@MDMarra No, but we've thought about it. Web-based, is it not?

7:48 PM
@Adrian It's just Exchange hosted by microsoft
You can still use outlook, or owa
has calendaring, etc
you can sync it with your local AD if you have one

@MDMarra We don't even have Windows on the desktop, so we don't have Outlook either.

Ah
Well if you're looking for hosted exchange, take a peek at office 365

It's something we're considering for part of our agency for 2013.

@WesleyDavid i'll make one tomorrow - 10 min till end of day.

Hmm. Actually, I think one of my riding buddies is a project manager in that group.
I should talk with him.

7:52 PM
zimbra.com/products/zimbra-open-source.html - vmware image of zimbra - maybe its easier to setup - pre-packaged

I heard here is some kind of BOFH convention?
4
@WesleyDavid thanks for the Gravatar ;)

@faker Quite welcome. Yours is one of the best. Full face mask BOFH? Wow. Just wow. =)
You're the kind of SysAdmin that makes people think "Is he just here to trace a cable drop or is he going to start taking hostages?"
=P

@WesleyDavid fuck the hostages

@voretaq7 I have that on a shirt.

I find myself inexplicably attracted to the downvote button now that I've changed my avatar.
"Not enough punctuation! downvote"

8:05 PM
@WesleyDavid I've been like that ever since they made question downvotes free... "Dammit! My coffee's cold! Downvote!"
Cat in gravatar... Downvote!!

@Ward question downvotes are free? That changes everything!

@JeffFerland That's why Derpy Operator From Hell has a hint of fuschia...

@faker have been for a long time

WTF..... I've got 99 notifications to Please cast your primary vote in the Stack Overflow 2012 community moderator election!
@PeterGrace

@JeffFerland voter turnout is at an all-time low!

8:07 PM
Yeah, but the fucking notify script is going broke
@RebeccaChernoff
Who the hell else works for SE?
Where's Kyle?

heh it's not the notify script

12
Q: What's with all these notifications?

kevingessner Yes, I promise, I will vote -- but 72 notifications seems like overkill.

it's, um, being fixed right nao >_<

apparently every time someone visits the election it kicks out a new message - they're talking about it over in TL so they're aware it's lost its marbles

@RebeccaChernoff phew !

@RebeccaChernoff no fixing until everyone votes!

8:08 PM
There's another 95
How's your database feeling?

@RebeccaChernoff No fixing it until you change your avatar.

new election strategy: VOTE OR WE'LL DROWN YOU IN SPAMS!

I thought those mod elections were long done

Uh, I have 99 of those bitches
haha

Yeah, I clear it and then I get new ones. Seems to jam up at 99.

8:09 PM
back up to 29 alreadty

99 notifications on my wall, 99 notifications, I bet some where they're throwing exceptions, here go again with them all!

good thing that db has SSDs in it

@RebeccaChernoff I demand public shaming of whoever let that loop into the wild.

otherwise I might not get all of those notifications
I bet Jeff was like "Sure, I'll come back for a bit and help code the election notifications. MWAHAHAHAHAHHA"

@JeffFerland you have a better way to get out the vote?

8:11 PM
@voretaq7 no :(

eep

@Iain wut

@MDMarra one of the guys in the SO election #

Oh, I didn't click on that spam.

@WesleyDavid you missed someone I think

8:15 PM
@Iain I made her one!

@RyanB Duty calls:

What happened to poor @voretaq7 ... someone accidentally your whole transparency

@Hyppy there's always one ...

Ry.
8:21 PM
ok, I changed it on gravatar, not sure how long it takes to propogate

@Ry A couple page refreshes in chat triggered it for me

2-3 minutes for me

Ry.
@Hyppy the gravatar site said up to 10 minutes, so I'm not going to be too worried about it

@Ry Fourteen years.

intentional so I can still be spotted in chat

8:25 PM
Lemmings.

Ry.
@Basil I am a sheep, thank you
@WesleyDavid my middle kid just turned 18 last week - whee!

@Ry :D

@voretaq7 Now I have a lemming shaped hole in my heart, you jerkface.

Ry.
well, blew up a bunch of stuff this weekend
it was exciting

8:31 PM
@WesleyDavid 's fake

Ry.
the-minuteman.org/content/2012/June/10/… pictures, video. If you have any particularly recalcitrant hardware you want blasted, lmk.

@Ry Wow, we need to hang out. =)

@Ry that is awesome!

Ry.
@WesleyDavid you know where I am :)
@faker thanks, it's a lot of fun.

@JourneymanGeek Man, Singapore is pretty badass. I should visit sometime: edition.cnn.com/2012/06/08/world/asia/…

8:55 PM
@WesleyDavid You'd be executed within minutes of getting of the plane for improper use of a park as a litter box.

@WesleyDavid I hope I never have to deal with Notes again
A little late to respond to that, but yeah.

@WesleyDavid Suited up

Bastard Hedgie from Hell, reporting for duty!

Ry.
well, foo, I can't get whatever caches exist to recognize my new studly gravatar

@JohnK Suit up!!

9:04 PM
@WesleyDavid can you knock one up for meta.stackoverflow.com/users/165582/aarthi please ?

So... who has no intention of reverting their gravatar after the week?

@Iain As Lord High Commander of the Neo-BOFH movement... sir, yes sir!!

Ry.
I need a new headshot anyway. I like the one with mud on my face, so I might use it

@WesleyDavid is a GIMPing fool today.

Ry.
he needs to write a shell script and use imagemagick

9:07 PM
I love my wife, I can look at boobcritic and I don't get in to trouble!

@WesleyDavid cheers :)

@Ry I'm starting to think he already has

@Iain Wait, I think I screwed that one up...

Ry.
@ITHedgeHog does she run boobcritic?

No, she knows none match hers!

9:09 PM

Ry.
@WesleyDavid still giving her a haircut
you need to move her face up a bit to hide that white stripe

Picky picky

Ry.
QA reporting for duty, sir

Truly strange. Not showing up in GIMP

You're going to give poor @WesleyDavid a complex.

Ry.
9:11 PM
oh wait

@Hyppy I may switch to this ^

Shoot, the mask for the phone wasn't as sharp as I thought all this time. Good thing I'm not compulsive other wise I'd have to go back and redo all of the previous dozens of BOFHatars! HAH! I mean, that would be... Good thing I'm not... that would just be... ... ... DAMMIT ALL!!!

@WesleyDavid cheers

@Iain Love it! I think that should be the default modmin one :-D

@WesleyDavid Well, if you do happen to redo all of them with a better mask, could you move my face up a bit so the full crazy stache is in view? ;)

9:23 PM
I love you guys. You're Crazy as All Fsck, of course. But still love ya.

Ry.
@Adrian you coming to drinks thursday or whenever it is?

@Ry Hmm. Assuming it's not chucking down cats & dogs, I think I shall.

Ry.
@Adrian cool, we can talk about everyone here without a digital trail being involved.

I don't like this avatar craziness, it makes it so much harder to tell who said what
(said the hypocrite)

@freiheit Better?

9:37 PM
@WesleyDavid Yes. Yay!

@freiheit Or... hmmm...
I still think @ScottPack's new one is the best:
Kinda hard to see though.

@Ry Ooooh. Juicy Gossip. =D

@WesleyDavid that red is partially transparent, though, isn't it? (there's a dull square around my face. Same thing on Aarthi's)

Ry.
well, I give up, my new gravatar is showing on my blog, but not here. I've cleared all the caches and pillaged all the sheep

Gravatar is a little slow
The first time I changed it the process took about 4 hours.

Ry.
9:41 PM
I figured once it was showing on wordpress.com, it would show up here

Fscking Oracle. 5 years later and they still haven't fixed the problem with MySQL not updating deletions in the mysql.user table right away.

@freiheit Oh interesting, didn't notice that I had mussed with that.

@Ry we cache gravitars on our end ... mostly because gravitar is ass slow

@Adrian If you want fast, associate a new address with the new logo and change your SF email address to the new one

@freiheit But then what would I have to bitch about?

9:45 PM
@Adrian You're a sysadmin, right?

Had to remove the alpha channel, then re-add it just to make sure.

@WesleyDavid Now you have to go fix every avatar you've made so far... ;)

@freiheit Fortuantely, I don't think that alpha channel craziness was in play until the last few =)

@freiheit Of course. Lets rephrase that, I'd have to go find something else to bitch about. Not that it would be that tough....
I am however happy with $boss[-1] at the moment. For the last here he worked here in 2009, he required that all servers have Vt capability on the CPU regardless of additional expense. This is pretty much saving me a pile of cash I don't have right now.
2xe5440 2.8Ghz CPUs with Vt and 32GB RAM. There's all sorts of things I can do with that after I migrate the mail server off it.

@Adrian I think I'll just bitch about Shibboleth

9:52 PM
@freiheit I find bitching about social worker cow-orkers to be very satisfying. There's no end of stupidity that those freshly-minted masters degree-bearing children can cook up.

@Adrian You can get servers without VT-x?

@Adrian Cow worker - Freudian slip or very much intentional?

@MarkHenderson Not nowadays. But it's really nice to be able to re-purpose 4yo servers for VMWare.
@WesleyDavid The latter. =)
I love it when those kids show up in my cube all up on their high-horse. That's when I point out that I was learning programming and studying networking when they were still wetting their nappies.

@Adrian You sound like a bit of a self-righteous ahole ;)
But, it's BOFH week so that's a compliment today

@MarkHenderson It's one of my features. I also take good care of my people too and defend them from the other self-righteous aholes.
I do keep it under some control. I haven't muttered "basketweaving degree" in their hearing in at least 12 months.

10:00 PM
Ahhh fuck, what a great way to start the week. New server went in on Friday, and over the weekend two matching disks in the RAID-10 failed
Server wasn't in production yet but it means I have to set it all up again, blegh. Looks like the disks failed before the initial backup had a chance to finish

@MarkHenderson Wow. Serious infant mortality. =/

@Adrian Yep. Unlike SIDS though I'm glad it died young and not once it was in production

@MarkHenderson Truly. Having run IBM Deathstars way back when, I'm skittish as hell about drive life.
Crap. The server that I was hoping to put ESXi 5 on has a 3ware 9690SA RAID card. No support. =(

@Adrian Don'tcha hate that.
Still, new RAID controller is cheaper than a new server

@MarkHenderson True. Was hoping not to have to unrack that bad boy though. =/

10:12 PM
@MarkHenderson Good news, now all your disks won't be from the same batch.

@derobert This is not the first time I've had this happen :p

@MarkHenderson Same here.

19
Q: High Failure Rate of Large Drives?

Mark HendersonI recently deployed a server with 5x 1TB drives (I won't mention their brand, but it was one of the big two). I was initially warned against getting large capacity drives, as a friend advised me that they have a very low MTBF, and I would be better getting more, smaller capacity drives as they ar...

@MarkHenderson I've had it bad enough that I replaced something like 20 drives, out of 8. In a year.

@derobert Wow, that is bad

10:16 PM
Yeah, that was years ago. Its been long enough now that I consider WD drives again.

10:26 PM
@derobert I never had any problems with WD once we switched to only getting RE-series drives.

@Ward these were RE series drives. But it was years ago, our more recent WD drives have been spotless. Well, except for one batch of veliciraptors.
But that was relatively minor.

@MarkHenderson Could it have been physical damage (shipping, etc)?

This was back around when the RE drives first came out, I think
maybe '04 or thereabouts

@WesleyDavid You need to do one for Bart... I'd say any Grimlock picture would be appropriate for BOFH

@derobert I got a batch of the IBM 75XP 85GB Deskstars. They worked great until they all died of bit-rot at once. =0

10:31 PM
@Adrian fun :-(

@derobert And so we bought another enclosure to clone all that data into. Which is how we're still running a SCSI320 DAS system as our file server in 2012.

@derobert I think our switch to REs was later than that, maybe 2006. Prior to that we only had with DEC/Compaq/HP drives in servers.

@Hyppy Yeah, it could be. This server has actually been in storage for a while and could have been moved a few times as the office was re-organised

Everyone gets the opportunity to learn the lesson that failure of disks from a single batch is highly correlated.

or a batch of dell optiplex 380 failures
that sucked.

10:34 PM

@WesleyDavid Hmmm, I was thinking of doing that myself. Good idea :-P

@Mario Our desktops are primarily GX260/280 units. Around 300 of them. Thankfully they're nothing but dumb terminals for X/Windows.

if you dont need much, look into HP 5740 thin clients

@WesleyDavid though it'll have to wait 'til tomorrow, gotta run...

We still lose a couple desktops per month to capacitor failures.

10:35 PM
we use them on the call center floor - awesome machines for basic tasks
the 5740 has 2gb storage - just big enough for iSeries Access, web browser and a custom app (.net) - windows 7 embedded (might be up to win 8 embedded now)
we buy them by the 100's

Nice. We buy the 260/280s from refurbishers about 20-30 at a time. They're wonderful little units and my hardware tech knows Dell stuff like nobody's business.
I call him the hardware whisperer for all the dead Dells he brings back to life.

alot of people give dell shit - i like them for the most part

@derobert No, screw that one, go with one that's darker... EVIL-ER

whoops. Killed Apache on the wrong server....

i hate that when i have a failed hard drive i have to go through basic trouble shooting when i call them, when i know what the problem is - but whatev.
it didnt occure to me that icloud would resync 800 photos when i installed ios 6 dev preview before it would install my apps. been going for an hour now :(

10:42 PM
I love me some good old fashioned rsync for backing up my personal computers. =]

someone through linkedin wants to discuss my "career goals" - this is the first time (ever) i've been contacted by someone through linked in...
i dont know how to respond..

@Mario My guess is it's a recruiter with multiple different positions they're working on filling

probably
and just last week my boss questioned why my side work appears above my day job on linkedin. its an alphabetical order, genius.

It happens
