Earlier this week, I asked if anyone was interested in a loose-knit Red Hat study buddy group to finish 2012 with some Red Hat certifications. The response was positive and so far we’ve got five people signed up to focus on getting the Red Hat certification(s) of their choice. List of Participants: Kenny: A man of many talents on ServerFault. Kenny is gunning for his RHCE. He already ha

User: "what time are you on lunch so i can ask you a non-work related IT question?" Me: "I don't answer non-work related IT questions during my lunch."

Dan
@HaydnWVN What a cheeky fuck

User "So i'm not allowed to ask you non-work related IT questions?" Me: facepalm "Just ask already, it's nearly lunchtime!"
User: "But you said..." Me: hangs up phone
Me: diverts phone to voicemail
@Dan It's been one of those mornings lol
My manager was the other side of my desk just laughing lol

So this makes me happy...

A: Should I continue using CentOS 5.3?

ewwhiteNo. You should not continue using version CentOS 5.3, especially if you're running public-facing services. Security exploits are the concern here. If you can bring your current OS revision to CentOS 5.8, or the most recent point-release, that will be the best approach if you want to stay on that...

DanijelMy linux CentOS server has been compromised lately (rootkit). Some files attributes have been changed, for example the command : lsattr /bin/ls gives s---ia------- /bin/ls How cand I use find command to list all files on system that have attributes set to s---ia------- instead of ----------...

Don't worry, @ewwhite, we had the issue with staff "storing" stuff in their "Deleted Items". A while back we enforced deletion of items older than two weeks which of course narked a lot of people.
I don't understand why people would save files in a bin? Because they don't know how to create folders?

12:30 PM
@tombull89 I seriously think it's the one-key filing system
and that they want a clean inbox

@ewwhite Oh, don't make me laugh. I think our record is 12,000 inbox items, 2,000 unread. One day when I get that laptop I'll go and nuke everything but stuff from this year.

@tombull89 Doing 'preventative maintenance' a good 8+ years back i came across a school secretary who used the Recycle Bin as an archive of stuff she needed to work on... My assistant at the time didn't find out until after he'd emptied it and ran a defrag...

deserved

I've 2 users here, both kinda old dinosaurs, one keeps EVERYTHING and usually multiple copies, his PST +archive is over 10gig, the other deletes EVERYTHING after he's printed/read/replied... Even his Sent Items :/

Dan
@tombull89 I don't understand that, it's quite literally like storing paperwork in your office bin
I mean, it even has the same fucking name

12:40 PM
I've never had the pleasure of actually meeting someone who puts important files in the Trash, but I would very much like to ask them what they were thinking.

Dan
@MichaelHampton I don't believe in giving users access to the recycle bin

Agreed, it does exactly what it says on the tin

@Dan yesterday I suggested it be renamed Shredder.

Dan
@MichaelHampton Haha, that'd be better

@HaydnWVN "I take lunch at half-past midnight; call back then."

12:43 PM
We don't give anybody recycle bin access either.

Dan
@tombull89 Cant see the need - it's a safetynet at best and nobody really understands it

Again, isn't this all bad UI design?
or are people just stupid?

@ewwhite That follow-up "I've been hacked" make me much happier than your original answer, somehow. Something resembling justice in this word, I suppose.

Dan
@ewwhite Not stupid, just lazy. People don't read the information they're presented with - it's the same with everything else in their life from cars to washing machines

@Dan Too be fair, sometimes they're lazy just because they're stupid. Reading manuals does require the ability to read, after all.

12:47 PM
@ewwhite Lazy. After 5 years working in schools, it's certainly laziness.

Dan
@tombull89 You're IT, you fix it!

@HopelessN00b So I tried in earnest to help... I came from environments where I couldn't rebuild, but would have to extract the rootkit.
I've done it plenty of times... but yeah, in this case, dude wasn't doing his job

In outta his depth

@Dan That's exaclty it. Not working? It's easier to give IT a call than even attemtpt to diagnose. I've lost count of times things weren't turned on or not plugged in or speakers on mute or something not physically connected or no even any power to the room.

I mean, I had to learn once, too

12:50 PM
Really? Wimpy record. One of our Execs at $[job -1] have 6 figures worth of inbox items, 50-something thousand unread.

He was also, oddly, the guy who kept complaining that he couldn't find some email he knew he got, and sending in helpdesk tickets to find a given email.

So happy to see the backside of that job.

@tombull89 I once had a 320 mile round trip (on-site support) to plug some speakers in

You get the odd couple of staff that restore your faith and attempt to look if there's any power or lights on, but for the most part...
@HaydnWVN Billable, I hope.

@tombull89 Let just say their support costs didn't drop the next year

I wish I could add a billable charge for basic calls that could have been solved by basic troubleshooting.

@tombull89 Why can't you? I do.

12:53 PM
@tombull89 Yeah, much like a 'Support Excess charge'

@HopelessN00b I work in a school.
@HaydnWVN I think the preferred term is "Idiot Tax"

people are used to paying an excess on car repairs/insurance, why not on support
hell, we're a well oiled machine most the time! cheesy smile

@tombull89 Oh. Just start tacking on added costs for APF-compliance. (Ass Pain Factor.)

"IT's NOT WORKINNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGG" turns plug on "£25 please"

Make my brain scream out in agony, pay more.

Dan
12:55 PM
Man, I'll be desperate the day I go back to 1st / 2nd line support

@Dan I like my job, for the most part, just something I have to question, "whyyyy?!"

Dan
@tombull89 I can totally empathise - had it all
Most favourite story, though sadly not a call I picked up, was an irate teacher who had just done a Google Image search of "Prince Albert" while in a class broadcasting on a projector

@tombull89 Me too, i enjoy helping people almost as much as i enjoy technology... But some days patience = Ø

@Dan Oh. Oh man. That's...unfortunate.

@Dan I was called out to a primary school (WAN, web proxy filtering done by central council) where the darling kids had been doing pottery... Cue 2 of them going to google and typing in "Big jugs"...

Dan

"Yes, it's because they use PHP..."

1:18 PM
As far as processing power and RAM is concerned, Facebook's pages are rather simple, a well written C program with a webserver such as Nginx could efficiently handle all of facebook's queries on a few servers, plus another few for database lookups.
hahaha
people think they can run anything with nginx on a vps

Q: What's the deal with using unreliable green energy in datacenters?

sharptoothThe news say that Google now uses 48 MW of electricity produced by wind turbines to power one of its datacenters. I've always heard that "green" energy is great, but it is unreliable - wind doesn't blow constantly, sometimes there's no wind and so no energy. How can unreliable wind energy be us...

haha, this is great

A: How to synchronize folders between two Windows Server 2012

Mark HendersonDFS-R

(it popped up in the review queue)

I don't know what's worse, the fact he's using Server 2012, or the answer.

What's wrong with windows server 2012?

Technicanlly, nothing. But the inteface leaves a lot to be desired.

@ewwhite It seems I was right about that guy.

1:33 PM
@tombull89 I find everything except the metro part quite nice.. and you can do most of the work in the new servermanager
and pro-tip: right click the bottom left corner of the classic screen to get a context menu with often used tools, so that you don't have to pop into metro

@pauska I discovered that the other day. Unfortunately "Restart" seems to be missing from that menu.

Dan
Trolling!

<kbd>Win</kbd>-<kbd>Q</kbd>
Fucking markdown.

@MichaelHampton Well, I honestly don't restart servers much other than during maintenance, which is 99% of the time via the windows update pop-up..
Win-Q pops up Lync here..

Dan
@pauska Wait, you don't reboot your servers at 3:00am every day? How do you stop them crashing?

1:35 PM
@pauska Oh. Heh. I've usually seen the message about "Your system will be restarted in 2 days..." and have already hit Alt-F4

@MichaelHampton .. on a server?

Windows Server 2012 Standard.
I gotta figure out how to turn that off.

um, that should be easy to turn off in the control panel applet for windows update
or via gpo, like real men do
we only let terminal servers and client pc's auto-reboot at 3am when there are updates, never for other servers
@Dan I bet there still are people rebooting servers nightly to "keep them running fast"

How so? It's a good question, or one I like...

Only problem is that it's already attracting incorrect answers and comments from people who don't know what they're talking about. :(

it's a funny thing.. servers (where background services are prioritized) cache everything they can all day long, which usually slows down the GUI
which makes dumb admins think that the server is running slow

1:39 PM
@HopelessN00b I didn't think the question was bad enough to close. Try improving it.

@HopelessN00b it's NC
like Michael just pointed out why

@MichaelHampton Not sure how, honestly. So I put my vote in as NC. (The other 3 votes are for OT, which is obviously wrong).

Why does facebook need so many servers? Is it because they use PHP?

I think the clincher for me closing it was @longneck 's answer, which despite being factually incorrect, is getting a lot of upvotes.
@MichaelHampton No, the green power datacenter question.

@HopelessN00b Yeah i know. I'm just saying that was a really bad question.
Speaking of bad questions...

Q: Loose flash message after redirect - environment configuration

svassrI have project running currently symfony 2.0 and I need to display a flash message after a redirection. The matter is not in the code but in my local environment configuration because it works perfectly on another. Any feedback will be welcome. Thanks

1:43 PM
@MichaelHampton Right, and as soon as I can, I'll throw a delete vote on that abomination.

I don't see the green power question meeting the You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face test in the faq

@Iain not comprehending power distribution/power systems is an actual problem :)
also damn you for beating me to closing the Symfony question

@voretaq7 you provided the nice comment while I killed it off

@Iain But I wanted to chop its head off with a shovel!
(Gratuitous violence - it's Postal!)

@Iain Yeah, there's probably quite a lot of "how do I..." or "how does x..." work questions though.

1:49 PM
psdoom meets Server Fault -- Mods have to shoot the bad questions. The truly awful ones fight back...

@tombull89 that doesn't fit into that category though

Honestly, I think understanding power systems and how a datacenter gets power is within the scope of "practical, answerable questions".

Or could be. Probably wasn't for that guy, so I'm not exactly regretting my close vote, just pointing out that such a topic can be topical and important on here.

@HopelessN00b The way the question was asked is shit (it doesn't lend itself to a good, complete, general-case answer)

Anyway, almost 10:00, time for the obligatory, masturbatory Friday meeting, so... joy. Be back after the management team is done mentally masturbating all over each other.

A good, comprehensive question/answer pair on how datacenters get their go-juice would be useful, but we get so few questions on it that I'm not inclined to go through all that work drawing power diagrams and explaining how ATSs and power-blending works :P

1:57 PM
@HopelessN00b the next line of the faq Chatty, open-ended questions diminish the usefulness of our site and push other questions off the front page which pretty much described that question

@MichaelHampton Which guy? The CentOS5.3 dude?

@ewwhite Yep
No updates in years? How many hackers currently consider it their home away from home? — Michael Hampton Sep 14 at 9:33

no excuse for that

@ewwhite there's always an excuse
sometimes it's a good one ("We have one sysadmin doing 15 other jobs")
's why I'm still running FreeBSD 8.3 instead of planning the 9.1 move

I saw a question from somebody yesterday who was still running FreeBSD 6.something

2:02 PM
On a public-facing server?

and couldnt' figure out why rsync didn't work
Yup
1
A: rsync protocol incompatibility

Michael HamptonThe FreeBSD box has a six-year-old version of rsync which uses an older protocol version. You can force the new version of rsync to use the old protocol by adding --protocol=29 to your rsync command.

been through that with old Red Hat installs

2:15 PM
@MichaelHampton Wow, FreeBSD 6.4, seems like that should be older than 4 years.

@ChrisS jesus... I remember upgrading the ISP to FreeBSD 5/6 when I started there

@voretaq7 5 to 6 was almost as bad as 4 to 5. =[

2:46 PM
Just sayin

(There's a bad tag collection on meta.)[http://meta.serverfault.com/questions/3042/the-bad-tag-collection]

Just sayin

You know I'm the one that started that, right ;)

Yeah, I was tryin to be witty, more than accurate or helpful. :)

heh

Oh, and if anyone was wondering how the meeting went... turns out that angry mental masturbation by a management team is a particularly unpleasant form of sexual release to have to witness.

2:59 PM
@voretaq7 Did you know pfSense renamed IP aliases to "Virtual IPs"... I swear, I wonder what kind of drugs the people running that are on sometimes.

Can we maybe get a few more people to pile on and manually comment @MarkHenderson about his link-only answer? :D It's probably been cleared from the review queue by now, unfortunately.

Damn markdown.

@ChrisS Hehe, true. It's only for dev - haven't had a look yet, and I need to know it at least a little bit

Q: How can one send commands to the "inner" ssh session?

iconoclastPicture a scenario where I'm logged into a server (which we'll call "Wallace") from my local machine, and from there I ssh into another server (which we'll call "Gromit"): laptop ---ssh---> Wallace ---ssh---> Gromit Then the ssh session from Wallace to Gromit hangs, and I want to kill it...

that is coool

Dan
Wait....I don't need Windows 8 / Server 2012 to manage Hyper V 2012 do I?

@ChrisS . . . I....WHAT?!?
@ChrisS and our 5->6 transitions were pretty peaceful (I did do them all manually though)
@Dan I don't believe so

Dan
@voretaq7 Just downloading RSAT for Win 7

6 just introduced quite a bit of new concepts and such (eg ULE).. So I ran into plenty of relatively minor issues.

3:32 PM
@ChrisS yeah we stuck with the old 4BSD scheduler until like 6.2 or so

Win7 RSAT definitely works for 2012 Servers, but limited to the features available in Win2008 for the most part. I don't think all the new Hyper-V stuff can be configured by a Win7 computer (I haven't tried myself, just what others have said)

Dan
@ChrisS THat's fine, first job Monday morning is to get a normal 2012 box up

Win8 isn't that bad, though it reminds me of the learning curve of Win3.1 to Win95...

@ChrisS Pretty much my thoughts.

Dan
@ChrisS I still don't like it, and I won' tbe using it as my primary OS any time soon

Cartman: "Metro User InterGAAAAHHHHHHHHH!"

BURNING QUESTION: Is "Metro UI" or "Ubuntu Unity" a worse swear than "Barbara Streisand"?

@voretaq7 "Ubuntu Unity" - but "Using Client Infrastructure as your Exchange Mailbox" is entering the lexicon from what I hear.

woohoo, /review auto comments are working
@WesleyDavid BAD KITTY!

3:48 PM
@voretaq7 I told you I've repented and moved everything of mine to Rackspace. Everything, you here me?!
What's done is done. I can't change history. Leave a dying man alone. =[

@WesleyDavid BAD. KITTY!
GIVE THAT FINGER BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL OWNER! NAO!

@voretaq7 I do not, however, regret eating all of your bologna. Or vomiting it in your underwear drawer.

BOXEE!
So anyway, that's a good idea with using the shelving as a space divider.
I live in a small back room of an adobe house with no outside windows, so only need to remember to take the safety off my rifle before falling asleep. Nice, really. =P

@ChrisS I avoid memes that make me want to punch people?

@voretaq7 How can you not love Boxxy?

You cannot delete the accepted answer

I'm listening to a presentation for this... skyera.com 44TB of flash storage in 1U

@MichaelHampton I can, I just elect not to...

4:26 PM
@ChrisS Because we're old?

@ewwhite What's that cost? I'd guess around $500,000.

@ewwhite How? Quantum space folding to fit the cubic space of a Volkswagen into a 1U server? or is the 1U case about 30 feet long?

@ChrisS Nowhere close to that.

@Adrian You can get a single Fusion IO card that has 5.2TB of space... A handful of them would logically fit in a 1U case.
@ewwhite Well I'm guessing cased on the size alone, no idea what performance is... I must be way low?

@ChrisS Ouch. I've obviously spent too much time here fiddling with 1990s technology.

4:30 PM
It's cheap MLC... but their magic is wear-leveling that operates on the aggregate.
rather than in a per-SSD scale

1. Pop a bunch of Kensington SSDs in a 1U case
2. Label it "Enterprisy"
3. ...
4. Profit!

No HA option

WTF are you going to use 44TB of storage for where you don't need some level of redundancy?!
What kind of connection?

it has a 44-port switch on the back of it
with three 10GbE ports as well
These are Ex-SandForce people

Huh; I think I'm more confused now than ever as to what purpose it was designed for.

4:34 PM
@Iain is this seriously-non-minimalist house near you? rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-23787150.html

@ChrisS I don't think they know either.... Looks like 1 power supply

@Chopper3 Holy clutter h*ll!

@ChrisS the garden had me crying

@Chopper3 I'm surprised the garden doesn't have a kitchen sink!

There are houses like that all over the UK, owned by olds obviously, but everywhere

4:50 PM
frack me why is this column null? <grumbles something about needing proper DB constraints, chickens, eggs, and the end of the universe>

@ewwhite Oookay. That strikes me as kinda stupid. No HA functionality anywhere for 44Ts of storage?

@WesleyDavid NO. BOXXY does not belong here.

@Adrian Buy TWO and mirror!
use a ZFS head...
:)

@ewwhite I suppose if you need 44T of storage, paying 15k for a ZFS head is no big deal. Maybe.
Frankly, this would suit our agency's wants fairly well. I frequently get requests from staff and middle managers for storage of and setup for streaming video to remote sites for training and client interviews. Right up until we start talking money, of course.

You don't have to pay for head.
2
a ZFS head, that is.

5:01 PM
@ewwhite I'd say, Chicago must be one hell of a town. =)

I was not impressed by the all-flash storage solution
@Basil Any thoughtS?

@Chopper3 it's over the water from me, about 15miles (30 mins) away to drive - it's very near some friends of ours

@Iain Go take a tour!

@Iain it's nasty isn't it

@Chopper3 I hadn't looked past the main photo - I just checked where it was but WOW !

5:11 PM
yeah - the garden in particular

it looks quite innocuous from the front too

@Chopper3 That...is terrible.

@Chopper3 why did you find that ?

I always love how non-Brits assume how we live over here, imagining tea parties, butlers, 'foggy london' (watch the start of the Cameron/Letterman interview) etc., when that mess of a house is far closer to reality for most than they'd imagine
@Iain it was on b3ta

@Chopper3 I always forget about that place

5:17 PM
@Chopper3 The wife listed a condo like that once. The owner had previously owned a tchotchkes shop.

@Iain one of my oldest 'haunts'

$3/gigabyte for the flash solution

@ewwhite Yeah, that's 1/3 our agency annual IT budget, including salaries.

:(
so poor

5:43 PM
@ewwhite Yeah, nobody's here for the big money, but it sucks when staff blame us about the crappy IT facilities when you can't afford to give them any better.

@Adrian talking of shitty IT budgets I had a call off an agent last month asking if I was interested in some design/deployment work (non-VoD) at a fairly local to me office of a large insurance company. This is a >£1b/pa revenue company and after speaking with this guy it became apparent that their entire IT was about 9 guys doing every kind of job, all supporting 24x365 and with a few rented racks at a colo - their whole budget must have been <£1m at most - that staggers me

@Chopper3 Ick. Though I somehow doubt that an arrangement like that would pass auditing requirements here in the States.
We're about 26M and we barely skate through on the financial auditing and the boss probably thanks his lucky stars that nobody audits our medical/clinical mgmt. software.
The EHR verification audit next year will be interesting next year.

5:59 PM
@Adrian spits

@Adrian Why's that?

@r.tanner.f Quite a few things, but the glaring one is that we're still not on encrypted passwords.

Ouch.

@Adrian . . . projectile vomits

@Chopper3 any opinions on FusionIO for VM storage?

6:06 PM
@voretaq7 Do I detect a little schadenfreude in my little wrinkled soul? Yes, yes I do.
@voretaq7 But you know what? It's. Not. My. Problem.
I'm forced to tie all my password update and account setup systems into that fiasco. They'll have to change all that and if they don't keep up with my stuff when they start the changes, I'll wag the dog with AD and make them pull from IT instead.

@Adrian wait... you still have your soul?
I should kick you out of this room.

serverfault.com/questions/435317/… I really should have made that an answer

@voretaq7 Yes, I drink lots of gin as a preservative.
@SpacemanSpiff Yes. Go put some pretty description around it so I can upvote it.

@Adrian with tonic ice, lemon & lime ?

Its friday... lol... that made me giggle uncontrollably because I just know he's going to come back with "I tried that and it just seems to pull up the manual" :D

@SpacemanSpiff FTFY :-)

@Iain gag 5:1 gin:vermouth with 2 olives.

@Iain missing comma, or do you actually flash-freeze tonic water? (cuz that would be AWESOME)

@SpacemanSpiff See. I mention voting and @Iain appears. He's a djinn.

hahahaha

@voretaq7 yeah it would - I keep the gin in the freezer and it 'thickens'

6:14 PM
@Iain was it you or @ChrisS who had all 5 close votes on something?

@voretaq7 @ChrisS

@voretaq7 I am the chosen one.

Sometimes you just wish you could roll up a newspaper and smack'em on the nose and say "NO"...

@Iain That's the one
@SpacemanSpiff "What's the worst that could happen?"

@HopelessN00b thanks for heading that one off as the pass

@SpacemanSpiff I like "We gonna kill Joe Cartoon / 'cause we are the Gerbil Platoon"
(Followed of course by the hummer)
I also like the meditative mantras

@Iain I suppose I should be happy that it's no embarrassingly bad.

@ChrisS it would be interesting to find out how that happened though

@Iain @ChrisS deleted that question so hard!

@SpacemanSpiff Eh, might be funny if they got the real actors, or did some voice-overs... It's more creepy, like people you'd see in a bar pretending to be those character.
