4:00 PM
@HopelessN00b Yay! Hundreds of dollars to fix permissions from the original software packages and script the home directory!

Apparently not only are our CVS checkouts scattered all over, they require a web of NFS dependencies to be mounted.

@JeffFerland In this case, I think they're going to restore from backup.

@ewwhite They have backups!? Who does that?

@ewwhite It's the only sane solution.

@JeffFerland full block-level bare-metal restore capability
nice to have

4:05 PM
@JeffFerland Hundreds? Try thousands.

@HopelessN00b ;)

How to tell if your boss is an Ass. Sends out late night email to group calling for a 9am meeting and gets pissy when nobody's been able to read it yet because they're fixing critical stuff that broke overnight.

ObFix: do not fix stuff outside 9-5 hours. Even if all is going to hell..
Also, update the CV for a place without a PHB.

@HopelessN00b pockets the money in an effort to save for a 500 sqft condo in NY...

@ewwhite Yup, $2500 a month for 500 sqft is exactly why I'm not moving to NYC until I either steal a large pile of money, of get an offer containing a salary of about a quarter million.
Granted, Ohio sucks, but there are some really nice flats around here with 3 or 4 times the space at half the price. :/

4:20 PM
@Hennes Yeah, that part is already being worked on. Should be done this week. Major job search starting this weekend.

@HopelessN00b I've decided it's not worth it. I'm heading back to NY in a couple of weeks... and the value is definitely here in Chicago
@HopelessN00b Why waste the money?
I'm looking at a new house in Chicago, and it's the type of place that would be $5-10 million in Manhattan.

the isp of one of my servers just sent me an email that the reason why I can only use 10 mbit of my 100 mbit is because they only allow 10 mbit /connection
morrons

@Adrian NorCal wants you

@ewwhite Well, frankly, I enjoy Manhattan. If I ever steal a mountain of cash or am obscenely overpaid to the point that I can afford ~1500 square feet in midtown, well... what's the point of making money if not to squeeze more enjoyment out of life?

@HopelessN00b Because being a sysadmin isn't the way to afford Manhattan life.

4:32 PM
@ewwhite Well, yeah, but if I ever end up with that kind of money, you really think I'll be working any day job, let alone one in this career field?

@HopelessN00b Yes. You're addicted to computers.

@ewwhite Alright, maybe you're onto something there. But, honestly, for a quarter mill a year, or having the place paid for with a stolen pile of cash, I'd be able to live in Manhattan the way I want to.
I might not be buying Chanel and whatnot, but I don't want that overpriced, high-society crap anyway.

@HopelessN00b I tried to find a place in NY... I saw a place in SoHo for $1,800/mo. 1br!
It turned out to be a typo... $18,000/mo...

@ewwhite Oh yeah. When I was looking in midtown, it was $2500+ a month for 500 square foot studios. Like, holy hell. You'd get more space in prison, and much cheaper too.
@ewwhite Well that's... insane. Was it a designer place or something stupid like that?

@ewwhite Ouch

4:44 PM
@JeffFerland Yeah. And 6 months ago I might have jumped at it too.

@Adrian Well, I've stayed in certain places before for the same kind of reason.

@ewwhite Because it's Soho, yes?
@JeffFerland That said, she might be open to the idea of Chicago in a few years.

@Adrian Yeah, but that's where I'd like to live.

Drat, looks like someone unaccepted an answer but I don't know where. I always want to know what I might have been wrong on.

4:59 PM

@ChrisS weeps
How did you track that down?

I can see the +15 as deleted in your rep history

@ChrisS I SEE DEAD REP. O_O

Yes

@WesleyDavid I had a +85 point answer migrated away to something like SuperUser.com or HalpMahGentoo.com

5:02 PM
hey guys

Yessss?
@Basil Tell me about Isilon.

@ewwhite It's a stinky little box that EMC is dressing up to be their solution to netapp
it doesn't work reliably

We're seeing.

everyone who owns one feels like they're beta testing

At least, block isn't.

5:08 PM
god help you if you're using block...
I'll bet their files are better than the crapware they've integrated into the VNX, but that's not a very high bar

@Basil We have VNX and Isilon.
both backing VMWare.

so use the VNX for block, and the isilon for file

10GbE iSCSI or NFS.

vnx for block is fine

it seems so

5:10 PM
mine always break, but apparently everyone else in the world loves them.

the Isilon nodes are SATA, unfortunately.

woo woo, last day of work before my 4-day vacation!

@ewwhite Wish I had that kind of cash in my budget.

@Adrian You need an "ewwhite-built Nexenta Box"

@ewwhite pretty much. We'll see if that happens before I can manage to pull the ejection lever and get the fsck out of here.
sigh Dev forgot that scripts called by cron do not, in fact, survive and continue running across reboots.

5:20 PM
@Adrian is this a script acting as a service kinda thing ?

@Iain Nope. Database import script that usually runs for 3 hours and generates an email when it's done. Server hung this morning and I rebooted at their request, but no email was generated, so they were all in a tizzy.

:)

or get them to buy my Thumper!
@Adrian Monit

@ewwhite Yeah, monitoring is finally back on the list of things to do too.
I'm still pissed that all those projects got stuck on hold for 6 months while management hemmed and hawwed over whether to outsource everything we do.
@ewwhite That thing is freaking scary.

@Adrian I can't afford to keep it powered.

5:26 PM
@ewwhite I don't even want to think about how much power we use here. The backup generator is a 12cyl Caterpiller that looks like it came out of a locomotive.
Facilities boss says it has a ramp up time to full building load of 2 seconds.

@ewwhite what if that was 48x2TB?!

@David It accepts 3TB disks.

@ewwhite why have you not done this yet?
for bragging rights, if anything?!

If I had $15k lying around, it would be used for something besides buying 4 dozen SATA disks

@Adrian such as?

5:31 PM
@David A new roof on the house. Getting the truck's motor rebuilt. New side-sewer on the house.

work-related only!

@David Work-related? They'd probably do something fscking stupid like buy 75 new inkjet printers for all the supervisors.

lol
but, if it was your budget to choose what you want

@David I'd probably buy a Nexenta box from ewwhite. But 15k isn't going to cover all the expenses around that either.

@ewwhite is that a 7210, or?

5:38 PM
@Zoredache x4540
I paid too much for it in 2009... and now it sits...

I can't even get money to buy a single new computer
Still running an old iMac from 2006
an original mac mini
2 imac's from 2006, my bad
as we are "considering" upgrading to OS X Lion, those 3 will be left behind lol

@ewwhite It looks nearly identical to the 7210 we have. Some of the Google hits say apparently it is the same chassis. How long have you been trying to get rid of that?

add Mountain Lion into the equation and it adds 5 more (including our file server) that can't be upgraded

@Zoredache it's the same Chassis.

5:54 PM
FML. I need to figure out a way to migrate 1200 Thunderbird accounts without losing message filters or address books.

I was wondering if it'd be easy/possible to setup a published contact list for smartphones
without hving to setup something like exchange all the way

@Adrian from where to where?

@ewwhite Tbird 2 on ubuntu 9.10 > Tbird 15 on Ubuntu 12.04LTS
Might have to wait a few weeks for Tbird 16. 15 is breaking on simply running the Tbird from a different server than the one it had been set up on.
Fscking Mozilla developers.
off to meeting hell. later gents.

6:15 PM
well it sure died in here!

Working... We don't keep people who don't get their stuff done. =]

I get my stuff done
then sit on my hands for 3-4 hours

I've been pulling 45+/week for about two months now... I should make it through this in another month though. After that it'll cut back to about 30/w of "this needs to get done", and 10 of "improvements, whenever you get to it, etc" work.

@David does your smart phone support ldap?

dunno, havent looked into it @Zoredache
just considering common phones
iphone, android

6:22 PM
I know IOS does. So you could get away with just setting up a ldap server.

Reminds me of my lingering/neglected pet project to implement a ACAP server... One of these days...

Not sure about android. I would guess that there must be an ldap app somewhere though.

@Zoredache Would Exchange work on Android?

We are mostly IOS here now, but I know my boss was able to access the Exchange server for mail/contacts/calendar from his Android device before he switched.

Hello!

6:28 PM
@Zoredache do you have to do enable before you can read emails

@Zoredache ah, we dont have "work phones" here, i was just wondering for everyone's personal phones
nobody would end up using it most likely though...

@David If you give people the ability to access their email on their phones, I am sure everyone would use it.
@JoelESalas sorry, I didn't follow that.

@Zoredache I am playing on your capitalization of the I, as in Cisco's IOS for routers
@Zoredache Respectfully disagree, lots of people just 9-to-5 it and don't want work creeping into their personal life

@Zoredache they can, just i doubt anyone knows how
you have to add Gmail as Exchange, at least on iOS

You don't have to add gmail as exchange, you can connect to it as imap.
but you don't get all the neat features like calendars, and contacts.

6:31 PM
yeah
There is ONE iOS 5 device connected to our Google Apps
and its not me
@Zoredache for LDAP, would I just be installing the AD LDS role? or are there other applications that are better?

If you already have an Active directory you could pull your contacts from that. You could setup LDS, you could bring up a linux box and use OpenLDAP. Or download one of the appliance distros that come with a full ldap setup.
Plus there are dozens of other ldap servers out there too.

Yeah, already have AD setup, but only for a small portion of the users here
most everyone is mac-based

I wish caldav/carddav had better support.
If you have a Mac server you should be able to setup The Address Book Server. IThat appears to be supported on IO and Android, though it looks like you need an additional app for Android support.
CardDAV is an address book client/server protocol designed to allow users to access and share contact data on a server. The CardDAV protocol was developed by the IETF and has been published as RFC 6352. CardDAV is based on WebDAV, which is based on HTTP and it uses vCard for contact data. History Specification The specification is currently a proposed standard RFC published by IETF. Implementations The following products implement the server-side portion of the CardDAV protocol: . * Apple Address Book Server. * [http://baikal.codr.fr BaĂŻkal], an open-source and lightweight CalDA...

We do, but its ancient
adding another "role" would probably cripple it :(

@Zoredache Unless of course you have a BlackBerry, then you get that for free :p

6:46 PM
@MikeyB you dont' get that for free, you have install a stupid blackberry server.

@Zoredache Nope. If you setup a GMail account on BIS, you get instant push, address book & calendar sync.

Oh, for gmail, I thought you were talking Exchange.

Is this article not including some extra steps?
doesnt work from here

@David Looks like it should be correct.

I'm on wifi on my phone, 192.168.1.166
put in 192.16.1.7 (win 2008 r2 server) IP
username Domain\User, and password
hit Next, Cannon Connect using SSL, Continue (try w/o SSL), LDAP Account: Unable to verify account information.
Cannot*

6:53 PM
@David Missing an "8". Problem solved! Consulting fee, you pay now.

lol
only on this chat, i have the 8 on my phone
It must have slightly connected
I have a Log from AD
LDAP over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) will be unavailable at this time because the server was unable to obtain a certificate.

Additional Data
Error value:
8009030e No credentials are available in the security package

Windows doesn't enable SSL by default, you have to install a certificate. If you plan on using ldap outside your network, then you need to set that up. You really don't want your AD credentials crossing the network in the clear.

yeah, so it seems
how hard is this certificate stuff

somewhere between dead easy and very hard

i see

7:00 PM
Depends entirely on how familiar you are with certs. If you know them inside and out, this is a cakewalk.

I know nothing of them

Well you should be fine as long as you can follow directions to the letter. =]

@ChrisS I always wonder why Microsoft didn't give you a quick tool to quickly build a self-signed cert.

@Zoredache Can't make everything easy, we'd be out of a job. =]

7:03 PM
I know. I will build a web site where people can download a self-signed key and cert that I will generate for them.
I hope they don't mind that I will be keeping a copy of their private key as a backup. for them.

@Zoredache I think I remember there being such a site....

@ChrisS Good lookin' out microsoft!

@ChrisS They retired it in 2008

"Submit the request to a CA. You can submit the request to a Microsoft CA or to a third-party CA." = ?????
Ive generated my request.req from request.inf using certreq

7:10 PM
@David That is the tricky part. You need to send your request to somebody along with some money.

well thats no fun
i am just bored, not wanting to pay $$!

You have OSX boxes. You could generate the key+cert using OpenSSL, and then convert it to a pkcs12 file.

arent there free Certificate Authorities?

I don't know the syntax you need off the top of my head though.

Dan
@Zoredache I remember the first ever time I had to make a self signed SSL certificate. I was only young playing with Server 2003 at home - the process just absolutely fucking baffled me.

7:12 PM
@David Sure, but most of the free ones I have seen won't do a domain controller cert. But I also haven't really looked too hard.

ah

I have enough servers that I setup Certificate services.

Any leads on using OSX? I don't really follow the OpenSSL and pkcs12 stuff

@ewwhite I'd vote for the creation of HALP-MAH-GENTOOS.stackexchange.com if for no other reason than to be able to more easily mark large numbers of people for elimination.
"Gentoo all the thi..." ZOT! Ground fault execution, scumbag!

7:21 PM
@David StartSSL.com; minimal hoops, free, and works for LDAP SSL.

7:33 PM
Hey check this out: sqlfiddle.com

@WesleyDavid Looks like my concerns were in fact unfounded. Just received a rather sharp-looking resume.

I walked into a talk about LDAP, SSL, windows and addressbooks.

@JustinDearing Um... What's it do?

@ChrisS Its a little SQL Snippet execution environment apparently for MySQL, postgres and SqlServer

@JustinDearing SQLite too... Interesting I guess...
Not sure why it's any better than running against your own test server.

7:39 PM
@ChrisS The idea is for sharing a fiddle. "Hey I'm having a problem. Heres a link to my non-working code."
@ChrisS As opposed to here is a gist, here is my environment, . . .

Oh, like PasteBin but with actual functionality?

@Adrian Okay, good to hear. As I was drifitng off last night, I suddenly had a thought that I needed to get with you to see how that was all going.
@Adrian Are you okay with the whole thing? Still a little leery? Not 100%?

The difference in how payment was done might simply be a local thing. There's plenty of places around here where you can't do much with plastic.

BTW, I am not an affiliate of hers, I do not get kickbacks, and I am not relaying anything back to her other than the cordial "Yeah, he was happy." if she mentions anything about you and, of course, only if you are truly happy. =)
Think the doc will help get you noticed?

@WesleyDavid Yeah, I think so. It's a hell of a lot easier to read with her formatting too.

7:47 PM
I can say I do get a decent amount of interest in my resume on Dice, which is the only place that I have my resume. Well, I also use her ideas and wording on my LinkedIn page.
I'm not sure what complex of reasons that could be from though. I mean, I do have decent certs that I know get noticed. I also have good keywords... but then again, that's all as a result of good resume writing so...
@Adrian Would you have preferred something like perhaps a PayPal invoice?
I've invoiced people through PayPal, mostly international customers, and everyone has been fine with that so far. It seems like she could benefit from that.

@WesleyDavid Or even credit card processing over the phone.

@Adrian ... ew. -.-
=)

I hate Paypal, but I can deal with it. Getting a check cut and mailed in a short time frame is really annoying.

She could use square on her iPhone to do that. My stepdad I think used that for his photography biz for a while.

@WesleyDavid Yeah, there's several services. Hell, my favorite produce vendor at the farmer's market does that.

7:50 PM
So square for over the phone processing and PayPal for those okay with it. Either paying directly with paypal or using PP as the CC processor. Don't need a PP account for that.

@WesleyDavid That's a pretty good recommendation. I'll keep that in mind for folks asking me similar questions.

@Adrian I know she has an iPhone, so it'll all be magically taken care of. Heck, it's amazing how much of a business you can run off of just an iPhone now.
I just did personal and business accounting / check paying / check cashing all on my iphone a few minutes before I changed windows to chat.

@WesleyDavid Oh yes. It's gotten to be far more common than the older style system rather quickly.

Of course, I'm saying "iPhone" but mean "mobile phone" as it's all available on teh 'droids too. At least, I think it is...
Did Square get a droid app?
To the Googles!
Yes. Yes they did.

Anyone live in/been to Monterey, CA?]
@ChrisS i'll check this out

8:12 PM
@David I've got a bunch of riding buddies around Monterey. All over SoCal, really.

@Adrian cycling? motorcycles?

@David mostly the latter, but some do both.
Most of my cycling buddies are local cyclocross folks I met through my neighbor.
@ewwhite When you were doing a bunch of puppet work, did you end up wrapping a bunch of the generic types into custom types?

@ewwhite It is if you live someplace with hills.

@Adrian i do road cycling

8:17 PM
Road cycling isn't a real sport either.

gonna try racing in 2013

If it can't kill you, it's not a sport.
Papa knows best.

about to buy a trainer
for the rainy season

@ewwhite Sport isn't a real sport!

8:19 PM
wish i had one for a wihle now though, only chance i have to ride lately is @ like 4pm
when its 100F outsiide
@ewwhite the hell is this contraption?

weird
why not get a regular trainer

This is a $12k ergometer. It simulates road riding, conditions, courses and has a 2D course interface. Like virtual-reality cycling.

www.kurtkinetic.com%2Froad-machine-p-198-l-en.html is what im getting

@david The reason I use it is so I can train indoors for track cycling. I can simulate certain loads or say, ride 30 minutes @400 Watts...

8:24 PM

I'm going to see if I can get a cheapo road bike and keep cycling over the winter

@David No clue. Never seen one in person. Probably not enough resistance.

"Some were hijacked to run a relatively new attack tool known as "itsoknoproblembro." lol! arstechnica.com/security/2012/10/…
good name ^
@ewwhite i never understood track cycling, seems such an odd sport

:( Yeah, it is :(

im excited to start racing road

8:30 PM
That Kurt trainer will bore you to tears.

but ive been slacking
hopefully build up a good base soon (its been hot hot hot lately, and finally cooling down)

I'd recommend a Computrainer if you're willing to spend
It's a scaled-down version of my Velotron

I can't bring myself to be one of those dudes who gets up @ 4am to beat the heat

@David it's more interesting than road racing

@ewwhite I am not willing to spend that
im prob only gonna use my trainer for rainy days
and get me some arm warmers and leg warmers and a base layer
and super hot days once it becomes summer again

8:34 PM
I've already started wearing a base layer and arm warmers

its still 99F today
82 tomorrow

@David I'd try to find a used one. it's easier to get a focused workout on one

@ewwhite meh, i've got the dedication to do a regular ride on one
doesnt even rain too much here usually

today was 13C and 32mph winds with heavy showers

still cheaper to get trainer + leg/arm warmers + base layer + cycling jacket
@Iain where do you live
C, but mph?

8:38 PM
UK

UK doesnt use kmph?

nope we're a real mix of metric and imperial

even more broken than just using F and mph
cant make up your minds!

@David you may find bib tights usable too

Dorks!

8:40 PM
?

@Iain ive yet to find bibs that fit my skinny ass

Buy Assos, and look FLY.

Anyone know how to ask FreeBSD's pf which interface it'll send out a packet on? I've figured out a probably relevant symptom of a problem I'm having:

lagg0_vlan91
Cleared: Tue Oct 2 00:05:11 2012
References: [ States: 0 Rules: 9 ]
In4/Pass: [ Packets: 457698 Bytes: 36568512 ]
In4/Block: [ Packets: 7715 Bytes: 773794 ]
Out4/Pass: [ Packets: 0 Bytes: 0 ]
Out4/Block: [ Packets: 0 Bytes: 0 ]
No traffic going out on vlan91! Buggrit. Can't figure it out.
Well shit… pfSense didn't add a route going to that vlan…
I knew posting randomly into here would help.

I dont know how they managed to do it but in the three mails they sent around welcoming the new people, they wrote my name wrong. Three times differently.

8:46 PM
Can't tcpdump/wireshark tell you that?

@ewwhite you must be mr. moneyhat
Assos is so expensive

Do iOS devices show the Shared contacts from the Google Apps?
If so, then @David, simply needs to publish his contacts using the shared contacts api. developers.google.com/google-apps/domain-shared-contacts

@Zoredache hrmm
"retrieve and update EXTERNAL contacts that are shared to all users in a Google Apps domain"
does that mean not people within the domain?

@David The shit lasts... I bought a $600 Assos Fugujack in 2005....
worth it.
But honestly, I pickup a lot on eBay

@MikeyB pf doesn't determine routing

8:57 PM
@ChrisS I was wondering if there was something weird in the rules like a custom target. But it turned out to be a pfSense issue. Weird.

@ewwhite im 6' tall, 130lbs, 28" waist
all bibs ive ever tried were loose in the waist and tight at the shoulders
(same time)

Assos will fit. Much nicer textiles than the other brands. Go to a pro-shop and try it... then buy on the interwebs for cheap.
Rapha may also work, but that's more of a style thing

i have like $260 or $220 in credit at my bike shop
but was planning on using it for the trainer
