When I see people using bash on Windows I just want to scream at them "You're doing it wrong"
Is that justified?
@WesleyDavid prr

Indeed. they should not be using windows. :)

@Hennes Oh stick it up ya bum

Ah, open doors. I just love to kick them in.

@MarkHenderson Let's see some headbutting

12:25 AM
As windows admin I might also have a less than convincing point. :)

@JoelESalas I have to be careful. Because I have a diamond people seem to think I know what I'm talking about or somehow take me seriously

@MarkHenderson Fixed to refer to the correct line

@JoelESalas Haha, I didn't even check, I just assumed you meant you wanted me to headbut the person using bash on windows
@WesleyDavid headbut

@MarkHenderson Now that you mention it...

@MarkHenderson: the problem isn't that they're using bash on windows. The problem is they mounted a screwdriver on a jackhammer to drive in a nail ;p
(that said, in some cases, if you can't be arsed to switch environments some nixy tools are nice on windows.)
bash is also 'nicer' syntaxically than powershell IMO

12:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek Honestly if you're stuck adminning Windows boxes you really should learn Powershell proper, it's a great language

@JoelESalas: probably ;p
I might eventually, even if I don't

quick, should i order chinese food or make a frozen pizza

@MDMarra Hmmmmmmmmmm
What flavour is the pizza?

supreme

Chinese

12:37 AM
its got like sausage, pepperoni, peppers, etc
ok
brb ordering chinese

I find that the only frozen pizzas I can eat are the simple ones, like hawiian

thats simple?
and you have frozen hawaiian pizza?

too many frozen ingredients = diaster
@MDMarra Ham and Pineapple. Two ingredients. Pretty hard to fuck up
And yes, we have frozen Hawaiian pizza
That pizza was a staple emergency meal in our freezer for a while

I live in the wrong part of the world

@MDMarra I thoguht America was the king of frozen/instant meals?
Fuck me I'm getting hungry thinking about pizza now

12:40 AM
While that may be true, I've never seen a frozen hawaiian pizza before
I've also lived exclusively in the northeast
You're probably closer to hawaii than me

I don't think the pizza is made in Hawaii, I think it's made by a huge machine that's maintained by blue-collar workers somewhere in a poor Australian town/suburb, snap-frozen, put on a truck and driven 2,000km to a supermarket distribution center where it's then put on more trucks and delivered to individual supermarkets where some spotty teenager on night shift puts it in the supermarket freezer when he's finished jerking off in the store room and wiping his hands on the cauliflower

Also true
Just saying that the reason that I may not have seen it is that the flavor may not be popular in the northeast

Ahh, I understand

Shit's very regional here
I live about 300 miles south of where I grew up and I was shocked at how different things are
And that's just from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania
I mean, a lot of it is definitely the same, but theres all kinds of shit here that I've never heard of growing up

"Marrying your cousin" different?

12:46 AM
haha not that different

Cos as @WesleyDavid can attest to, I have some pretty hot step-cousins.

but people eat soft pretzels for breakfast here
like daily

@MDMarra My wife eats them for lunch sometimes, but I don't think she's ever had one for breakfast

in MA, you really only see them at sporting events. Here there are whole shops that just make soft pretzels
There's Scrapple here.
I don't even know what the fuck it is. It scares me. I won't eat it.

@MDMarra Yeah we have them here too. I thought it was a stupid business model, but they stay in business
I can't judge, Australians have some pretty weird foodstuffs

12:47 AM
Everyone else here eat it. It's some kind of breakfast meat amalgam
Yeah, you guys have vegemite
or marmite
whatever that stuff is

@MDMarra I don't know it by that name, but Wikipedia informs me it looks like dried out leftovers
@MDMarra Vegemite, and my son eats it by the finger-load
"No Daddy! Not on toast! Finger Daddy! Finger!"

haha

We also have an obsession with beetroot

@MarkHenderson meeoww

How do I send a client to collections

12:50 AM
Beetroot as in the root of a beet?
@JoelESalas You sell their debt to a collector for pennies on the dollar

@MDMarra I I've had people flying from PHL to Chicago actually BRING me pretzels on the plane.

@MDMarra I thought the beet was already the root part

@JoelESalas Hm. Touche
@ewwhite Dude, pretzels are as common as anything here.

Pretzels and Philly Cheeseteaks

@MDMarra I don't know

12:51 AM
@MDMarra How does that work exactly

@JoelESalas I dunno. They're private companies afaik

^ That stuff

You just find one
@MarkHenderson Isnt that regular beet? (I don't eat them so I dunno)

@MDMarra Yeah I guess it is, but you eat the bit that's under the ground. Maybe it's a different name for the same thing

12:52 AM
Ya, I think it's two names for the same thing

@ewwhite When Krispy Kreme opened in Australia they were near Sydney airport, and you would see people going on domestic flights with all their carry-on luggage as Krispy Kreme

hahaha
I've never had one
There aren't any Krispy Kremes near me.

@MDMarra A bunch of them closed up pretty quick but the ones that are left generally pair with a McDonalds and do OK

I've been making an effort to shop at local places
Give less $$ to chains

I try to as well, but it's a bit difficult when they charge $15/kg for minced beef and $45/kg for lamb cutlets when the supermarket has it at $10/kg and $30k/kg respectively

12:54 AM
@MDMarra My blood is boiling right now, I've never been in this situation as a professional

Like the shitty chinese delivery place I just called, for example

Yeah, whenever I'm in Philly, I hit the local non-chain places, too...

Haha dude, you always try and rile me up about Tony Lukes.

@JoelESalas I know that in Australia you ahve to send three "Letters of Demand" first

@ewwhite Next time you are in Philly, you need to go to El Camino Real.

12:56 AM
And then you get a good lawyer

@MarkHenderson The problem is that reputation is everything in entertainment, and I didn't want to pull my trump card on this guy. But there it is.

And cross your fingers they don't go into receivership

@MDMarra My customer is only two blocks away. So that's why I'm attached to it.

Ah, I understand
El Camino is on the other side of the city, but worth the subway ride

@JoelESalas Ah, a notoriously fickle industry
Too bad they don't understand that you need to get paid
We've had customers who have paid their invoices early actually come to us and ask for their money back so that they can delay the payment until the due date

12:57 AM
@mdmarra - It's soooo good.

hhaha

@MarkHenderson It's not that fickle. People know who's good at keeping their word and who's not. It's not really a secret.

So today's interview...
"Describe how you feel about the DevOps movement...."
3

@ewwhite Is that a loaded question, or a trick question? :P

@ewwhite Did you unaccept that gig in NYC?

12:59 AM
@MarkHenderson Real question and a good discussion.
@MDMarra No, still doing that.

Was it a fulltime gig in NYC?
Basically, why are you still interviewing?

yes
I always interview.
3

So, I mean. How.
You don't interview at these places during normal business hours?

I do.

I'm trying to understand the logistics here

1:01 AM
I haven't had a normal desk job since 2001

Ah

So I usually have flexible schedules.

got ya

I mean, I've had jobs...
but there's always some element of craziness that requires weird hours coverage.
today's meeting was midday for a couple of hours.
and I'm in Chicago.

right
I need a gig where I can work from home
In a couple of months I get to start working from home once a week

1:04 AM
I think I'm a little crazy... I like working a little too much.

But I'd really like to never go to work again
I'm always doing something work-related.

But found that a steady full-time position doesn't keep me interested enough.

I've been reading VNX 5500 documentation lately in my spare time

We have them at work. I don't know much about it.

We're getting one to replace a clariion cx-4
it's the centerpiece of our P2V project
and I don't know shit about it

1:06 AM
ffs just had a call "Hey, I'm setting up a new printer and I've got an IP address here. Do I put that in IP v4 or IP v6?"
The best part? The call came from my boss

@mdmarra I find that I'm not super impressed with that type of storage. If it doing block or block/file? Any flashcache?

block
and at least 300GB of FAST cache
24GB of actual cache
all 16Gb FC
I pushed for FCoE, but started too late in the game

Only @Chopper3 does FCoE.
I'm spoiled in the storage area. I tend to like file-based storage.
how big of a VMWare installation will this be?

fully populated c7000
at our main site and DR

$$$ Gen8 servers?

1:11 AM
ya Gen8
Actually
I think it's fully popped -4 to start
I think Dell is being allowed to bid on the servers as well
But it's more of a "we're getting a second number for something this large" than anything

Let me bid.

Somehow this guy thinks that "answering questions" shouldn't be billable. Do lawyers or doctors answer questions for free? Fuck no, so why should I?

:)

If I thought you'd be allowed to, I would have contacted you already :)

@JoelESalas Because estimates and answering questions can help lead to more business.

1:14 AM
My director is picky about who we use as a seller/reseller/var

@MDMarra You guys can go direct to my guy in Long Island...
it'll still be cheaper than what HP would do for you...

@ewwhite You have a point, but I can't spend an hour playing 20 questions with someone several days a week without any expectation of compensation

@JoelESalas Give the time for free and make it up in billing...

@ewwhite We've already got quotes bundled with VMWare licensing and professional services from vendors we've worked with in the past
Unfortunately, there's no room for new faces

@ewwhite You are wise, sensei

1:16 AM
@MDMarra haha... no worries...

@ewwhite You said earlier you do career/resume' consulting, eh?

@Adrian I do.
@MDMarra It's just nice to get unbiased pricing, too.

@ewwhite I'll likely be in touch. I'm getting a whiff of BS from the recruiter. And it's worth a few hundred to me to make sure that I'm not taking the piss or getting a line of bullshit.

@Adrian I know the feeling
@JoelESalas Are you doing some consulting?

1:33 AM
Damn. GF's laptop is fscking HOSED! 1G ram with Vista Home and swapping like mad with just a 175M Firefox open
As I tried to type 15 min ago, the recruiter is asking for more desktop support detail when I pretty much just do infrastructure support and admin. I want admin desktop support like a hole in the head.

@Adrian How's she working for you?

@Adrian Hmm..

@WesleyDavid Starting to have significant doubts. Feel like I might just be getting a hustle.

@Adrian .pass the recruiter's name/agency

Moxie Recruiting, Scottsdale

1:44 AM
Um, where do you live?

Yeah, Seattle. Wesley said she does a pretty damn good resume', so I decided to give it a try. Need to give something a spin and shake up the recent string of rejection letters.

You'll get lots of rejection letters...
but you need to focus on what you're looking for.
PC work? Linux? Helpdesk? NOC?

@ewwhite Infrastructure admin & support. Perhaps some MSP/Consulting.
End Goal: Work with some smart folks, learn some newer technologies, and help my team kick ass by maintaining a network I can be proud of.

@ewwhite Former employer wants a hand.

@Adrian But you can't leave...
your area.
and there isn't much of this work in your area

1:56 AM
@ewwhite Yeah, as I'm figuring out. Might just chuck it all and go drive a forklift for a living.

I explained that I see the field being hollowed-out...
PC folks are always needed.
but the more advanced stuff is going to the service providers and consultants.
people in the middle are the ones being automated out of their jobs

@ewwhite The FUNsultants

@ewwhite Seriously, I'd rather drive a forklift than go back to end-user support for 20 years.
2

@Adrian I mean, the place here in NY has a perfect opportunity for you... minus that whole moving thing

@ewwhite yeah. I'm pretty much nailed down here for awhile. Probably cost me $20k in legal fees to be able to move out of state.
My primary advice for most men nowadays is to never ever get married or have children. Just not worth it.
3

2:05 AM
@Adrian I think your advice is "Don't get divorced"

@MarkHenderson That either. Can't be divorced if you never get married though.

@Adrian So I'm going to take your statement and show it to your kids :p
"Hey kids! Guess what Daddy said!"

@MarkHenderson My 7yo daughter would look at you funny. My 11yo son would nod sagely and agree.
@ewwhite So what's your take? Go back to school at night and suck it up re: the BS at the office?

How old are you?

@ewwhite 38

2:18 AM
yeah, this isn't about more schooling. You need to get on one side or the other of the trend in systems work. Either consuming or provisioning the cloud...

@ewwhite Consuming appears to be mostly Dev slots nowadays.
Provisioning is going to be the pointy end with precious few positions from what I can see.

Not at all... a lot fo the dev-only firms are immature in their approach to systems problems.
On the provisioning side, I can tell you that the NY firm is hiring and has enough work to support more people.

@ewwhite Ah. Which is mostly what Seattle and Portland OR tend to incubate: start-ups.

$$$ requirement?

@ewwhite 65-70k.
Thing is, I have better skills than half the QA testers I know who are making better than that.

2:59 AM
@ewwhite Yep. Definitely can do that. I suppose that's where the notion of interviewing the interviewer comes in.
Get the right place and make sure it's not a step back.

@Adrian >_< Wow, very unexpected. Very.

@WesleyDavid Perhaps I'm just getting an odd read, so we'll see. I'd be more than happy to be pleasantly surprised.
Interesting. A company that Classmates just bought is hiring.

3:36 AM
@Adrian 7 of your old friends from High School are looking for you (despite living in the same city still, and your parents still live at the same address and still have the same phone number; hell, you still have the same cell phone number you had in high school... But apparently they couldn't find you, despite being listed in the phone book, Facebook, Linked-In, etc... So they turned to an obscure website that charges money for freely available information).
Sign-up now to find out who are these morons that you obviously wouldn't want be in contact with!

@ChrisS Yeah, exactly. If memory serves, nearly all of the whole "reunion" stuff is going on over at Facebook anyway. I'm surprised that Classmates is still a going concern.

Sounds vaguely accurate.

1 hour later…
4:45 AM
@ChrisS Ah. Some digging around indicates that these guys are a FB Partner. They might have a future after all. =)

4:58 AM
OK, cutover complete, new firewall HW. Woohoo! Upgraded from pfSense 1.2.3-RC! to 2.0.1 at the same time :)

@MikeyB I've still got a bunch of 1.x PFSense's lying around.
I haven't touched them cos they've been stable as a rock. Not broke == don't fix

@MarkHenderson Yeah, we were running into odd problems. And 2.0.1 made handling multiple gateways actually WORK
Instead of futzing around with routing tables and the like. Which worked most of the time but broke in odd ways.

@MikeyB Load balancing or failover?

@Adrian Mostly offloading bulk web traffic from our expensive fibre line to our cheap DSL line.

Goodnight, my loves.
ZZzzzzzz... -.-

5:09 AM
@WesleyDavid bumhole lick

Hmm. Wesley leaves, router crashes...
Router crashes & takes laptop wifi Nic with it, for that matter

5:22 AM
Nope. Comcast service knocked out.
One damn sad-sack WNIC driver to be blown up by a non-localnet disruption.
Ha! Do a search for Cisco training on Youtube, get 2 sponsored video for EMC and Barracuda.

Sweet cd ~ works in Powershell
I just ran it in PS instead of my putty window
Who knew...

@MarkHenderson ok. That's cool. =)

Yogesh SutharI don't know in which category this question is coming, so sorry for that. My problem is I first install WampServer 2.2 in my Windows XP system. After that I install Visual Studio 2010. G'day

2 hours later…
8:46 AM
@ewwhite don't you ever sleep ?

8:56 AM
@HackToHell Firstly why would you try to 'bump' a question you only just asked, that's considered rude and secondly why would you try this on here, this chat room is for serverfault not ask abuntu

@Chopper3 Well it is suitable for sf too ...

@HackToHell either way read that bit in the top right cornder

@Chopper3 It's obviously very urgent issue that needs halp, you heartless... British... guy.... you.

@HopelessN00b hahaha ;)

@Chopper3 Read that, expected bitching a little sooner :P

8:59 AM
@HackToHell there's very few people here, hence why it's a poor place for support

@Chopper3 very few people ?
There's a helluva lot of people here

@HackToHell Granted, this room has a lot of people in it (probably because it's only one of two SF rooms) but compared to the main site it's just a fraction of the people that could look at your question. Plus bear in mind it's still morning in the UK/europe and night-time in the USA.
You have to consider high-traffic times for the site - no good posting questions on a sunday as the majority of users won't be at work, better waiting untill monday lunctime, UTC.

quiet today
@Chopper3 how're you today ?

@tombull89 ok

@HackToHell Also, free upvotes for mentioning how much TMG sucks sweaty donkey balll-sac.

@HopelessN00b what's tmg ? Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway ?
And no i do not really want upvotes, that does not change a thing ;p

@HackToHell Yeah, I think that's the official name. "That mother-fucking piece of shit" must not have made it past marketing, so different official name.

Looks like it does what cloudfare does

Microsoft axes many of its Forefront enterprise security products zdnet.com/…

@KennyRasschaert Ugh, sounds awful. I'm replacing the piece of shit with dual ASAs (suits wouldn't spring for PaloAlto), but if they integrate this kind of fuck up everything network-related into all their other products, that won't do much good. >:/

9:29 AM
@Dan people make their own luck

morning all y'all

@DJPon3 how's it going ?

not bad thanks Iain, how about you?

not bad too really

good :-)
I've not been here to catch up with people as much as I'd like, lately

9:41 AM
work keeping you busy eh ?

9:52 AM
@Iain oh yes, just finished rolling out Windows7 then took a week off. Lots of teething troubles as you would expect after converting 2500 users

Oh, my various gods.

@DJPon3 sounds 'fun' - I always try and avoid making changes before I go away - makes for a quieter time

Q: IIS log management

Jaba jubhylIs it possible to prevent IIS to log specified type of data(i.e credit card data)? I mean can I say to IIS; -If a credit card number is searched, do not log this, or do not log all credit card number(mask it). or is it possible to encrypt iis logs? Thanks in advance

"How do I get the customer credit card numbers out of my IIS logs???"
<facepalm>

@Iain well we made the changes in July and August then was here for a month during the major problem shakedown, but I was shattered by then
@HopelessN00b I like your answer. And yes: Oh dear god.

is PCI a requirement globally ?

9:58 AM
@DJPon3 Finally got a chance to use an xkcd comic in an answer, w00t, w00t. So at least one good thing came of it.

indeed. It's not all bad. Unless you're one of that guy's customers.
@Iain IIRC it is. I know we had to address it to use credit cards for our "cashless" payment system for students

@Iain Only if you want to be able to process credit cards. As in, VISA, AMEX, Mastercard, et al. will stop accepting any charges you process if you're out of compliance badly enough, or don't make steps to get all the way into compliance.
Not backed by force of law in a lot of places, but losing the ability to actually process credit cards is enough of a stick to make people care, even in other countries.

10:34 AM
@Iain All the serious bruising started overnight, it looks like that photo but yellow and black, some new sore bits too - ah well

@Chopper3 Get yourself arrested, accuse the cops of beating you for no reason and sue for monies?

@HopelessN00b Money's never the issue, good pain meds are right now though

@Chopper3 Well, thankfully the civilized world has draconian laws in place to protect you from unspeakable evils such as effective relief from pain, right?

these type of questions just keep pouring in..

Q: Should I reinstall my production server from 32 bit to 64 bit if it has 16GB of RAM?

Alexandru Trandafir CatalinI have a production server with 16GB of RAM that came with a 32bit CentOs installation. The website hosted on this server is increasing its traffic every day and I am having some MySQL trouble so I tried to check the MySQL configuration with mysqltuner.pl and gave me the following messages: [!!...

I'm getting sick of being the helpdesk of every facebook app maker out there..

@pauska I'd put in my two cents worth, but historically the mods have not appreciated the I'll support your crappy appy for a fee or royalties... comments I've made.

@HopelessN00b thats why im mentioning it here instead of going all-nuclear on the site..

@pauska Meh, join the dark side. Being on the bad users list is what all the cool sysadmins are doing... :p

It can also get on on the suspended users list as at least one 20k+ user has discovered

@Iain TomTom?

11:15 AM
yep

Well, hopefully I'm far enough down on the cool kids bad user list that I don't have to worry about that.

Besides, I agree with the comment someone made in here ages ago: Tomtom isn't actually real, he's just the living embodiment of all the snark that exists in all sysadmins, no matter how much we try to fight it or deny it
4

11:46 AM
mornin gents

@DJPon3 I don't buy that. I know my snark's so much better than TomTom's seems capable of, so there's gotta be a different explanation.

@HopelessN00b Have they? I've seen a couple of comments saying "my rates are £xxx/hr, my contact info is in my profile" but I believe they were being tongue-in-cheek.

12:02 PM
You bet. Then again, my comments get flagged like a groin-kicking footballer, even when I find myself scratching my head as to how the fock anyone, even a jackass on the internet, could find them objectionable, so maybe my experience is abnormal.

<shrug>

@HopelessN00b people flag for all sorts of reasons and people find even the mildest of comments objectionable

12:18 PM
@Iain Sounds about right, and fits nicely with my people suck outlook on/theory of life.

12:39 PM
Man, New York is crazzzzy... Guns, Ganja And GATOR Found In Brooklyn Home

@ewwhite sounds a lot more exciting than my afternoon.

'morning

12:54 PM
@ewwhite Maybe I've played too many video games, but my first thought when I saw the guns was "Why didn't they get 3 guns that take the same ammo... I wouldn't want to be caught futzing with 'which ammo does this gun take' when it matters"

gah, I wish I could find a Lync expert on the site to eject brain material from
I feel like I'm always working in the dark.. I don't know a single person deploying Lync hardware clients

as in VOIP phones?

yeah, VoIP phones specific for Lync
there was a suggestion for a telecom-based SX site but it got closed at area 51
heh - tried to find a lync forum on the net: lyncuserforum.com
the quality of that site pretty much represents how big of a "community" there is out there

1:12 PM
@ChrisS Nah, I don't think it's a video game thing. I often make gun-purchasing decisions based on what ammo type the gun takes. Can't exactly limit yourself to only one ammo type, but having 14 guns and 12 different types of ammo... is a pain in the ass.

@pauska IIRC PeterGrace knows OCS/Lync

Q: Moderator: profanity on blog.stackoverflow.com

Marc AlffNot a real question, but I have to ask one to flag it, to get moderator attention. This blog: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2012/10/join-the-stack-exchange-team-were-hiring/?cb=1 contains a comment dated Oct 2, 2012 that surely should be removed (profanity).

@tombull89 Done... No response yet
@tombull89 Apparently the TL has known about it for at least an hour and nobody had done anything yet. =/

1:24 PM
@ChrisS huh, ah well. We've done our bit.

So, if you used the puppetlabs yum repo, they threw 3.0.0 in there without any announcement or documentation or anything. And it's buggy as all hell.

morning

1:43 PM
@MichaelHampton beautiful.
Puppet has out-DevOpsed itself.

@ewwhite I know, right? Fortunately I have a nice test environment... :)
They also released Puppet Enterprise 2.6, but that at least got an announcement.
OK, once again, am I completely off base here, or should developers never be let anywhere near servers?

Q: Running Scripts on Multiple Servers PHP

user1714133I Asked this question on stackoverflow and was told you guys may have more advise, so at work we have been assigned an additional server because the load for our current server is to much. What I want to do now is have all my PHP Scripts on one Server ( Server 1) ran from another (server 2) to a...

@MichaelHampton you are entirely correct. The largely shouldn't be allowed near SF too
if SO rep <=10k && SF rep < SO rep then launch_into_space();
note that the rep requirements have gone up tenfold overnight

Anyone here have Xerox Workcentre 5700 series in their environment? Looking at renewing our contract and replacing our current 5675 but someone told me the 5700 series have a lot of issues.

@MichaelHampton which bit of figure out where the performance issue is did he not understand ?

@Iain Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I finally gave up and hit NARQ

@Iain If he's a typical web-warrior dev he believes that he sh*ts gold and never writes a single line of buggy/inefficient/ineffective code.

I'm declaring it narq too

@MichaelHampton Hang on, I'll get my Magic 8 Ball, Sysadmin Edition. Let's see... shake shake shake diagnosis unclear, try more detailed anaylsis.

had an interviewee for a SA position in yesterday. I asked a question that basically came down to "how do you find a bunch of files containing a string and move them somewhere else?".
this was his answer:

@tombull89 reminds me of the bofh excuse generator: pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ballard/bofh/bofhserver.pl

He was only told to come here in regards to a subdomain issue. And this guy's name does not fill me full of cofidence.
for the subdomain, you need to go to serverfault.comTWCrap 3 hours ago

for i in `find . -name *`; do grep $string $i; done > files.txt
for i in `cat files.txt`; do mv $i /tmp/files; done

@wfaulk "I'd assign it to one of the junior sysadmins."

somebody tell that guy about xargs

or find -exec. or that -name * would be a noop, if it weren't expanded by the shell first. or that grep doesn't return filenames when given only one file as input. or...

Hell, someone tell him about grep.

1:58 PM
grep -H $string $source_dir/* | awk '{print $1}' | sort -u | xargs -i mv {} $destination_dir
something like that should do it, no?

mv -i `grep -lR string *` /tmp

doh, forgot the files

it also fails to account for the multiple levels of subdirectories I told him about
