It scares me that people think it's unsafe to teach kids firearm safety....

/gibbers nonsensically
Answer? A f@#in' water gun.
I have a nearly six year old. He is just starting to put his dishes away when he is done with a meal. And this guy wants to give him a @#$% gun.../shiver
If it don't shoot water or nerf darts, I don't want it near him.

nerf gun is a good idea
i want a few in the office.

Joel Spolsky edited a comment on that parent firearm thing. Kind of surprised to see him doing that with 101 rep? Did he join just to edit that?

Jeff seems to ask quite a lot of questions there.

With only 101 rep?
I always thought he was active in the programming/tech ones. Then again he might be in the cooking exchanges too, I think I vaguely recall him talking about cooking.

3:15 PM
Well you can do whatever you want with your kid. I would never object to that. However; I would disagree if you tried to prevent two other adults from talking about teaching kids gun safety.... that's what bothers me.

@ChrisS most people seem to think that if they keep things hidden, then Bad Things (TM) won't happen

I don't keep it hidden. I'm just not going to try to arm him. He's freakin' six.

@Holocryptic Yeah; I know... I'm just not dumb. =)

We can't even get him to not squirt people with a water hose.

@BartSilverstrim heh

3:17 PM
I'm not going to take him out at 13 and say, well, I know you're going to dip your feather in a few inkwells, so here's a condom and a hooker to get you trained.
2

Yeah; but what you do with your kid is outside the context of the question or why it was closed.

old fogey voice If we were still hunters and gatherers, you'd be DEAD!!!
:)

Here's a gun. Try not to be impulsive and shoot daddy in the back of the head while he retrieves the target because "you forgot" or "you didn't mean to..."

in my day.....

@BartSilverstrim Please remember to stay off the range when it is in use.

3:19 PM
Take him to a driving range.
that's probably safer.
Unless you moonlight as the guy who drives round in the tractor.

How about I train him with a firearm the day he actually gets off his arse and picks up his room without having to be told, and I can go more than two days without hearing "I forgot..." or "I didn't mean to..." or "I accidentally..."

@TomOConnor you want to stick him behind the wheel of a car?! That's bad parenting right there!

@BartSilverstrim If you don't keep your room clean, you aren't going to the range with me any who.
:)

You sofistikated sity folk use "ranges". We used @#$% soda bottles filled with water perched on rocks. And we thought it was damn cool.
Actually, no, I don't want to put him behind the wheel of a car.
I didn't teach the step daughter to drive either. I was afraid she'd #@% kill us.

I learnt to drive my cousin's 1960 Massey Ferguson tractor at age 8 or so

3:21 PM
AND I hate to pay the @#% insurance on it, which was hiked up the wazoo, BECAUSE teens are a PITA behind the wheel.

I’ve noticed something strange while using RDP. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s the RDP protocol or Microsoft’s RDP client. When you use Windows Remote Desktop and view a folder’s contents using Windows Explorer, some of the text may display oddly in the various columns. This seems to happen mostly when the view is selected [...]

@Tom: And now look at you. You're a sysadmin. Something ain't right with you.
3

@BartSilverstrim I couldn't agree more.

While I don't encourage certain things...hey, son, how about we turn off spongebob and go blow shit up...I don't discourage things either.
If he wants to take up shooting when he's old enough to understand that we can't just automatically heal from bulletwounds like Transformers, sure, we'll go to a range.

I thought Transformers used lazers?

3:26 PM
And I don't agree with my daughter banging her boyfriend, I also acknowledge it's something she's going to end up doing. That's why it was made very very clear to her that if she gets pregnant, she's moving out and raising her own children and running her own household. You're old enough to do that you're old enough to not play house.

Or was that GI Joe?

@jscott: depends on the weapon. They had missiles, lasers, concussion blasters...each of the toys had a different specialized "gun" in most cases.
GI Joe and Transformers both had terrible aim.
They should both be armed with NERF guns.

@BartSilverstrim My parents didn't like me banging my girlfriend either. Funny, they never objected about my boyfriends.
Perhaps they didn't like her.
I know I didn't.

That's probably the best reason bang her. :-p
@Jscott: one of the aerialbots even had a torque gun that twisted whatever it hit.

"Sex is an act of aggression between two people who hate each other." :P

3:29 PM
@TomOConnor Two guys have a hard time making "18 year mistakes", this fact is likely not lost on most parents.

@SmallClanger no wonder I'm such a nice guy

Depends on the parents.

I only got caught in the act once.
After that, mum learnt to knock on my bedroom door.

There were times I hoped my stepdaughter wasn't straight just because she sometimes acts so dingy she'll end up getting pregnant and dropping from school :-( She's a good kid and most of the time is fine, but sometimes it's just...what the hell are you thinking?!

@BartSilverstrim "We hope you're a lesbian".. Well, that's certainly bucking the trend of unusual parent-child conversations.

3:31 PM
@BartSilverstrim I think that about most of the teenagers up to about the age of 25

Hoped?
She's in college. There's still hope.

@BartSilverstrim I was about to edit... no, what the hell were you thinking part.

That's the typical slack-jaw gibbering reaction I have when she does something that shows remarkable lack of foresight in her actions.

Do most kids go through the emo/goth phase?

Thank the FSM that she doesn't have me speechless very often. Like I said, she's usually a good kid.
I don't think so, @tom

3:33 PM
a cousin of mine is going through it atm, and we all think it's Weird.

Not "most".

@TomOConnor my sister is still going through it. She's 25.

They go through a rebel phase where they discover themselves and push for independence.

I just started smoking pot for my rebel phase.

3:34 PM
@BartSilverstrim not my sister. She just rebels.

Doesn't mean they'll end up wearing black and the heavy maekup and cutting themselves just to "feel" something.

Then my mum asked me to roll her a joint. and that was the end of that rebellious phase.
5

The stepdaughter never really went through that phase. She was given the freedom to do pretty much what she wanted, until she f$#s it up. Don't f$%$ up, you're okay.

@TomOConnor I drank and did lots of hallucinogenic drugs

She had nothing to rebel against. I was asking if she had any inclination whatsoever to be a lesbian. Not much she could do to piss me off except having her damn phone chirp every five minutes with a text message.
In which case I blasted that high pitch "teen tone" from my computer until she would leave the room.

3:36 PM
I never really did the full on rebellion thing.. Just kind of wandered through life for a while there.

I moved out. Smoked pot a couple times. Then I ended up moving back in. Then back out. Then back in again. sigh

@BartSilverstrim Excellent!

My parenting would make others cringe. I said I don't care if she wants to become a stripper or work McDonalds for the rest of her life or become an architect or actress...as long as she is happy and supports herself and takes responsibility for what she does. That's what's important.

@BartSilverstrim Nope. I think that's just fine. Especially that last part.

I think I'd replace "I don't care" in the first part with "I wouldn't break my heart".... but otherwise agree.
I think I'd care if my kid was a stripper... Unless they made 6 digits working 3 days a week...

3:41 PM
The only things that really irk me are when she does something blatantly stupid or acts entitled/lazy around the house...she's at an age where she's going to need to start doing things on her own more and more soon.

calls symantec support while looking up address and cleaning shotgun*

Teens seem to have a special relationship with the word "care".
See, Zypher is what happens when you give kids guns at age six.

I need to get my shotgun back over here from Vegas....

I say I don't care if she does it because if I said it wouldn't break my heart, it would be re-interpreted later as "you don't want me to do it."

@BartSilverstrim haha yes, i know to clean it before i go on a rampage :)

3:44 PM
And saying anything that could remotely be interpreted as encouraging a stepdaughter to become a stripper is probably not a good idea, even if she were making an easy six figures. Jus' saying.
2
Thus...I don't care what she does, as long as she's happy doing it, and she's living with the consequences of her decisions, and it doesn't involve making bail.

@ChrisS just make sure you know which strip joint and what hours. The horrifying possibilities otherwise are, well, horrifying.

@Holo: well...don't wave the money in her direction and she won't glom onto you.
In the buff.
They'll do that all the time normally. It's something teen daughters do when a parent pulls out the wallet.
Wallets and car keys. :-/

@Holocryptic I don't think I can afford to go to strip joints where the Employees clear $700/night easily/consistently.

@ChrisS you'd be surprised what a stripper can get in tips -- they beat bartenders

Radio personality here said a study was done and found that most strippers day jobs were as a teacher.
And made something like $340/night.

3:56 PM
ooooh, hot for teacher

@BartSilverstrim we had a math teacher in my HS who was a penthouse model.
Thankfully I never had her for a class. I probably wouldn't have passed.

Ew. Though, at least it wasn't Hustler.

@voretaq7 I knew two girls that did it back in college. On a really good night they could make $300; but that was only Friday nights... a normal day they'd be damn lucky to make $100. But this is a conservative town....

$100 a night isn't bad as a second gig
or as a college student who needs to pay for books - a week or two of that and your semester is covered.

whoops, $370 a shift. I can't find where he had the source, though.

@voretaq7 Law of diminishing returns also applies... The "normal crowd" gets jaded if you're there too much apparently.

His post: "HELLO! There's a new report out based on a major study of the stripping industry. And they found: The most common side job for strippers is as a TEACHER, at 14.2% . . . less than one in 10 strippers are married . . . 13.5% have kids . . . they make an average of $379 per shift . . . and three-quarters are satisfied with their job. Now I know why I thought my 3rd grade teacher was HOT"

screw the teachers my high school guidence counselor was seriouly hot ... i got into alot of trouble ... unrelated ... i swear

I hope she wasn't related.
AGH I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING!

You forgot to pick the kids up from school?

4:03 PM
NO! We've been talking about strippers more than five minutes and no one said boobs!
2

AHG
BOOBS
2

ok, so to summarize the morning ...

I don't recall anyone limiting the discussion to female strippers.

Eeee. Moobs.

4:04 PM
Age of consent, Teenage strippers, boobs, firearms, and how much strippers make ... I miss anything?

Okay, man-boobs.
recap of giggling over jacob and the flagging issue.

@Zypher It's Friday?

FRIDAY!

oh RIGHT

Tomorrow is Saturday!

4:04 PM

and sunday comes afterwards.

Had my bowl...check. Had cereal...check. Even picked a seat. Oh, yeah.

Flagged.

facepalm

@Zypher I'm so tempted to flag that

4:05 PM
Thought that was banned.
Get jacob in here...
What would be more awesome than a cover of Friday performed by a stripper draped in a flag with an automatic rifle right now...
I'd just sit back with my bowl of cereal and grin the rest of the day.

@BartSilverstrim Winning the lotto for triple digit millions would be more awesome. =]

I said awesome, not miraculous.

I read "I'd just sit back with my bowl of cereal and gin the rest of the day."

Y'know...what would cereal with bacardi 151 instead of milk taste like?
hmm.

i'm going with ... it's gonna taste like 151 and not cereal

4:10 PM

Sounds like it needs to be tested.
FOR SCIENCE!

SCIENCE! cheers

fortune(6) FTW

haha

had to lookup fortune(6)
And I've apparently shocked the room into silence. I'm like my own chat room smart bomb. Cool.

4:17 PM
@Holocryptic I WEEP!
really - I'm shedding genuine tears here! (well, not my own, but it's the thought that counts right? CLOBBERS USERS cry harder! I'm more upset than that!)

@voretaq7 I know. My lameness knows no bounds.

Actually, I've been testing @Zypher 's dd bomb...
So far no luck, just dd: writing /dev/kmem': Bad address`

actually I think I might be the only one with fortune enabled in my whole company.

Tried maybe 50 times

@voretaq7 Did you try the learnin' stick?

4:19 PM
@voretaq7 Or a boomstick?

@Holocryptic Those don't work: They pass out from blood loss and stop crying.

@voretaq7 It's all about wound entry angle. It takes practice.

gonna go try some more troubleshooting. If anyone has suggestions on the question I just posted, it would be much appreciated.
@voretaq7 that's hilarious

@Holocryptic great comic. Totally worth wasting a day to read it all

4:32 PM
@Holocryptic /me makes a vague suggestion about security filtering then hides under the desk.

@SmallClanger hmm, we don't have much in the way of custom security. And the few sites I found refferencing PS scripting don't make any special mention of it besides ExecutionPolicy

What does RSOP say?

Blood loss, crying and weird entry angles, my the room has been busy today.

4:50 PM
@SmallClanger RSOP shows the script in startup, but it wouldn't run. On my XP machine I just associated .ps1 with the PS shell program; by default it set to Notepad. I set the script as a local (vs domain) startup script, and rebooted. It's running a script but it seems to be stuck there. Maybe this just won't work.... Which would suck.
damnit. It got to login screen. I just checked and the program is still there...

So it is running?

What a pain in the ass program to uninstall via script
@SmallClanger something ran this time, when I associated the file type and the script as local. Before nothing happened.

Hrm. If it's running but failing, I'd look at the search path and other env vars next.

nothing in eventvwr. And the script runs as admin manually....
@DanBig you missed out on all the good flagging that when on yesterday after you left. It's been a real riot in here.

Did that whiner continue to get flogged in here?

5:00 PM
nah, he went and opened a couple questions on meta.so. We just mocked him while he wasn't here.
Bah. This is tiresome. I think I'm just going to have the temp go around to the computers and manually uninstall via ARP. Next time I think I'm going to have to spend a lot of time after hours researching ideas my boss has.

Sorry I couldn't be much more help. Never tried to run PS through GPO, myself.

@SmallClanger no worries. Thanks for trying. I've been beating my head on this for days, and my boss is getting impatient
Which kind of chaps my ass a little. It's not like there's a "timeline" that can be firmly established with this stuff. Especially when you have to research everything.

Only other thing I can think of is to start with a minimal script that writes the environment to a file. It'd be a good start if you could get that to run.

heh, the MSFT scripting forum I posted in has 14 replies so far, 3 scripts and no dice. Too funny.

5:20 PM
Comforting to know you're not alone. :)

hehe
To be fair, one of the scripts is the one Ben worked up for me, which was based off of the first script given to me. And all the scripts work, kind of. It's just a weird ass program.

5:39 PM
Nice. I have a new 10Mb/s line in our US office. I can get 10Mb/s to a nearby server, 8Mb/s to a server in the UK, but only 2.8Mb/s to our office.
This is by netcatting a stream of random binary. Now if I netcat it to the UK server and then from there to our UK office, I get 8Mb/s...

5:56 PM
damn
trying to remember a phrase I read some days ago
about a property of a system about scalability
a system should be able of doing the barely minimum... or was it doing all its work without depending on other parts of the system...
bah
I forgot

No TV and no beer make Homer go crazy

how do I see what blogs this room RSS subscribes to?

@Zypher strange, I always see it posting something from MSDN or Technet and I can't see it on the feeds

err
... you're right
digs deeper

6:11 PM
grumbles...

@coredump I think it was removed on account of extremely low SNR

hmm
at least someone remember what blog it was?

@Zypher, why did they add links to the network profile almost everywhere except on chat.*? It sure seems like chat.stackexchange.com/users/135/zypher should link to your network profile...

@coredump What, the technet blog?

uhum
they had a post on cloud computing that was very basic, but they had a key concept that was very good, and I simply forgot about it

6:13 PM

Thanks
Wow.
Did The Microsoft Stack Kill MySpace?

@Zoredache no idea ... @coredump no idiocy killed MySpace ... that and CSS

BAM

@hobodave did you just add some pepper?

@Zypher, thats alright. I'll just complain on the blog and think of some update to add to my meta.stackoverflow post that I can use to bump it up in the active list...

6:16 PM
I asked for my promotion, raise, increased responsibility, and a direct report today

and...

@coredump Yes, it was definitely all the technical issues the public never saw. Had nothing to do with Pedophiles, amazingly annoying backgrounds/music, community, or momentum.

Quick query for anyone who wants to answer. I need a verbose yet concise phrase to describe "fan". "Fan" being a device used to circulate air. Context being "In the case where fecal matter impacts the ___________"

@Holocryptic nailed it
she's going to get back to me on the raise though
I asked for 15%, I'm hoping she counters with 10%

@Iszi High Velocity Gyrating Paddle Device
@hobodave sweet dude.

6:17 PM
@Holocryptic I like it.

reciprocating turbulence generator

@Zoredache oooh, I like that one.

I've never had anyone report to me

invest in beatin sticks
and maybe a cattle prod or two

@Zoredache Nice one there, too.

6:22 PM
go with the cattle prod. And in my (limited) experience, it's not too bad as long as you don't have to stand over their shoulder making sure they're doing something. I'm still working out the whole keep a task list thing going

@Iszi, you could combine them and get a 'high velocity paddle-based reciprocating air turbulence generator'. But that may be a bit overboard.

congrats @hobodave

I'm of the opinion, if you're "supervising" someone working in a professional capacity and you have to constantly watch them to ensure they're doing something productive; save yourself the time, fire them and find someone who knows how to do their job. =]

thanks! :D
I'm ecstatic, I can't even focus on work

@hobodave is pregnant?

6:26 PM
@ChrisS I wish. Stuck with him for a little while longer. Just useful enough to keep around, just useless enough to anger me.

do you really want someone to report to you? Think of all the paperwork of doing reviews and so on.

@coredump I just asked for a promotion, raise, and management responsibilities

@Zoredache Yeah, that would violate the "concise" specification.

@Zoredache I don't mind

@hobodave WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU DO THAT

6:28 PM
lol
I want a new Benz
my boss is talking to her boss now, I wonder what he's going to say

you don't have their offifces buged?

lol no

shakes head

so I don't know if it was a cultural thing or what but I've noticed a lot of my applicants say things that are weird/borderline rude during phone interviews
e.g. I called this guy whose resume said his name was Muhammad, but his email From said Masud, and he answered the phone as Masud. I asked what he preferred to be called and he said "My friends and family call me Masud. You can call me Muhammad."
it made me chuckle

maybe that is a cultural thing?

6:38 PM
perhaps, he could have just left off the first sentence entirely though
another thing I hear a lot is "Yea, sure, why not?"
and that is the response to questions where you usually wouldn't give such a meh answer
like, "Would you like a job?"
he used that a couple of times

@hobodave Son, we are disappoint!
also Re: "Yeah, sure, why not?" -- not what I want to hear from someone in an interview...

same, but I've noticed that a lot of my Indian applicants make the same, or very similar, gaffes
coincidence?
besides that he was a pretty good interview

how does he feel personality-wise?

i had a good feeling about him
hard to put that into words though
he asked good questions, and when I asked about his experience in X instead of just saying "no" like many others he'd say "No, I have never worked with X, but I did work with Y and I think that is very similar"

and were they similar things? or are we talking "I've never worked with AIX, but I was a Windows NT 3.51 admin for years, and I think that's similar"? :-)

6:51 PM
yes they were
he compared Doctrine to NHibernate

ok then - good sign

and Zend Framework to .NET MVC
and when I was explaining Git, he knew what a directed acyclic graph was
major brownie points

lol

7:14 PM
It really worries me when I see people using, or in this case miss-using the 'cloud computing' term on the lopsa mailling list...
Someone wants to do 'cloud computing' on locally hosted physical hardware...

I heard cloud computing is powered by griffon farts. I'd agree with that assessment.

lol

@Zoredache which are the better lopsa lists ?

I occasionally read the discussion and tech lists.
There are some useful posts there.

good image cues for high availability, anyone has any ideas?

7:26 PM
@Zoredache cheers - this reminded me I was signed up but hadn't done anything

7:50 PM
I have a request. Anyone here that uses Facebook, care to "Like" my company page we are in the process of setting up? The reason i ask, is because we need 25 "Likes" to get a URL

@DanBig which companypage

done - I was #4

Thank you sir.

I hate getting downvoted to have rep not end in 0 or 5.

7:56 PM
@Cakemox I nolonger care

Who here uses Verizon, and can recommend a good Android based handset with a physical keyboard? User will be migrating from a BB 8830
I was thinking the Droid Pro would be the closest

@DanBig there are none
i've been looking for about 6 months
the Droid pro keyboard sucks
unless maybe if they are coming from a BB World edition

It is the world edition

I looked at the HTC Desire Z, but then gave up on the physical keyboard.

@DanBig done. I think. Done via BB cuz I cut facebook off via forward lookup zone shenanigans yesterday.

7:59 PM
I acutally type faster on the Nexus S than my old BB.

Here's the thing. The user is inept with tech, has over 3K calendar appts and 3K contacts. Desktop manager shits constantly, and I honestly can't be bothered to troubleshoot the new issue that comes up monthly. He NEEDS something with EAS NOW, and also NEEDS a physical KB.
He needs his hand held with password resets, so I need to give him something that just works. (IB Apple)

@DanBig what does your software do?

It is electronic patient care reporting for ambulances and hospitals.

interesting. Small company?

Yes, very. 10 ppl

8:12 PM
I follow a blogger who's got a pretty big following (as far as I can tell) and is (seemingly) prominent in the online EMS community. I can send you a link and maybe you can get him to demo it.
I obviously don't know him, but maybe you can get yourselves some more exposure.

Sure, thanks.

8:46 PM
Why does he need the physical kb?
Neat chat works from my phone :-)

chat is good on my iphone

That's what I'm using

I like the minimal style of the main SF site on my iphone too

Wife had a droid but I didn't like it.

we are mr & mrs iphone

8:49 PM
And what's the IB in IB Apple?
Wife switched shortly after I got one.

IB ?

Irritable Bowel?

She wanted to decide between this and that new thunderbolt android phone.
@danbig said it above.

I recently got Mrs an ipad as she liked the iphone so much - now it's a case of prise it from her cold dead fingers - she normally doesn't like tech

@lain-not the first time I've heard that.
@danbig-liked the page for you too

8:55 PM
I didn't ask if she wanted one I just bought it. If I'd have asked I've have got "What do I want one of them for ?"

I surprised myself how much I've liked my iPhone.

Thanks guys, I'm outta here for the weekend.

@DanBig have a good one
@BartSilverstrim they are very nice pieces of kit - much better than the BB I had before

Never had a bb, never really wanted one.
Wife's android annoyed me...preferred my gen one iPod interface and responsiveness if touchscreen.

I had a pearl 8110 because of the GPS - it was good for tracking & logging my cycle rides

9:02 PM
Finally came iPhone for Verizon.
Been happy with it despite higher cell bill.

O2 have had them for a long time now 3 & vodaphone have them too

9:48 PM
Can I expect funky network shenanigans if I have a 2003 DC along with 2008r2 DCs?

Nah, it just works
We've been running with that setup for just over a year, no problems at all

damnit
I have a ton of shit just not working here
KDC errors and the like

Sounds..... lovely

scripts running as expected on one client, not others
I'm so pissed right now
Because if I don't figure out how to make my script work, or a script work, I'm looking at manually removing that anti-virus by hand.
FML

Actually, regarding that...
Does this do anything for you? pastebin.com/EHq8YjLK
I'm not sure it'll work, but I just tried to convert that PowerShell thingy to VBScript

9:56 PM
@Holocryptic which AV?

@BenPilbrow line 22 char 3 cannot find the file specified code 80070002 source null
@Zypher Microsoft Security Essentials
fucking home edition bullshit
