Q: EEEEEK! What the Fruit is going on here?

amanaP lanaC A nalP A naM AThis page looks all messed up and the title bar has a (Prod) on it

@Zypher eh? linky?

@WesleyDavid purrr

most hilarious thing that has happened in a while

?

11:01 PM
@Zypher Bahaha i acually went to meta, saw that banner, thought I was on scifi by mistake and just closed the tab

no if you kept refreshing it would have changed

@Zypher That is brilliant

What's brilliant is the tag

"Works on my machine. Sux0rs to be you!"

11:02 PM
@Zypher Have you considered perhaps replacing all your dev's keyboards with like a fisher-price model?
6

nah ... much prefer hilarity

At least it wasn't alert(false)

^ Hilarity.
just remap the keys a little - DEPLOY, OHSHIT (undeploy/rollback), and ya know, whatever the hell else developers need.
Maybe a "my workstation is to slow" whine macro, or a "WORKSFORME" macro...

And have one labelled "SVN COMMIT" in one of those missile switch covers

@MarkHenderson BLUE CIRCLE :-)
ok, off to find food. laterZ

11:08 PM
Cya

@MarkHenderson So have we gotten you to be a semi permanent resident here?

@Holocryptic Well, its christmas break soon, I'm off from this thursday till the middle of janurary

@WesleyDavid :3

Gunna enjoy the summer and the beach
So we'll see if it lasts until next year. My productivity has gone to shit since coming in here though, which reminds me why I stopped coming in here about 12 months ago

11:11 PM
@MarkHenderson Uh, it's winter, friend

@Holocryptic Uuh says you

December == Winter
:)

@Holocryptic December === beach, hot chicks in bikinis that I have no chance of scoring with, 40+ degree days and a massive aircon bill

@MarkHenderson Well, stop by and say hello but don't let it get in the way of your job
@MarkHenderson I can live with that

(no chance of scoring with because I'm married, not because of my body, at all.)

11:13 PM
(uh-huh) wink

@Holocryptic He's in Australia. They have opposite seasons :)

@MarkHenderson Suuuuuuuure.

Meh, nobody works in December around here

@Jacob headdesk

Im sure my boss dies a little when he sees our billable hours in December
Also, I've never had a turkey at christmas. Christmas lunch is cold meats and salad
And beer. A lot of beer.
And not that fucking swamp water they sell overseas as Fosters. Nobody in Australia drinks fosters. Nobody. I don't even think they sell it here any more

11:16 PM
Christmas is usually ham and stuff

Christmas is never turkey at my place.
it's almost always roast beef, and ham on Boxing day.
with my special hoisin and orange glaze.

Mmm. Christmas around my place is a huge Prime Rib and Lasagna and Squash souffle.

Boxing day?

So, have I been mislead about all Americans eating turkey at Christmas?

Is that the whole Boxer rebellion thingy?

11:17 PM
Turkey @ Thanksgiving

@Holocryptic 12/26

HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS HAVE 26 MONTHS A YEAR?!
2

Or am I getting my history screwed up?

@MarkHenderson Yeah, We don't have turkey @ Christmas

Sucked in, I've had christmas at LEAST twice in 26 months

11:18 PM
Boxing day is the day, that traaditionally, people would go and break open "alms" boxes and give the contents to the poor.

Boxing Day is a day to open the alms boxes and give the proceeds to the poor.

Boxing Day is a bank or public holiday that occurs on December 26, or the first or second weekday after Christmas Day, depending on national or regional laws. It is observed in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and some other Commonwealth nations. In Ireland, it is recognized as St. Stephen's Day or the Day of the Wren (). In South Africa, Boxing Day was renamed Day of Goodwill in 1994. In the Netherlands, Lithuania, Austria, Germany, Scandinavia, and Poland, December 26 is celebrated as the Second Christmas Day. Although the same legislation – the Bank Holidays Act 187...

Oh. I guess I'm a heathen then.

So has everyone done their christmas shopping?

@Holocryptic Nah, it's that they don't actually teach history in US schools anymore.

11:19 PM
Holy shit! I just got a personal appeal from the inventor of the wiki!

@MarkHenderson you betcha. all done, even the girlfriend's present.

@MarkHenderson All the important stuff.

@MarkHenderson nope
Haven't even started looking yet
I should probably get on that...

@Holocryptic Does he have $112,000,000,000 that he needs help moving?

Hah, same :( I just buy crap like iTunes vouchers for the wife and hardware shop vouchers for my Dad
Shopping is tough these days

11:20 PM
One of the gifts is an airline ticket. I'm flying out on the 28th to meet her parents.....

@TomOConnor No. I guess he just wants me to read something. No strings attached.
@AdrianK Nice

@Holocryptic Does mean I have to fly sober into Sun Valley though. I'm not looking forward to that.

hmm I need to find a new nespresso machine

@Holocryptic Sounds like you're going to end up with a foriegn object in your butt. Without a string.
@AdrianK is that a long trip?

@MarkHenderson Nope. Wrong end...
@AdrianK why sober?

11:23 PM
@MarkHenderson scary landings there. nasty crosswinds, short runways, and narrow-ish valley.

@AdrianK Well that's OK. If you die, it's not like that's your problem.
Some would say it's only just seeing as how you never asked to be born either.

@Holocryptic Because I'll be meeting her parents minutes after I step off the plane. And I NEVER fly sober.

And if its a huge fireball you and your girlfriends folks will get a huge payout

@MarkHenderson LOL. I'm glad you started hanging out here...

@MarkHenderson Hmm. That would be problematic. I've already got a plan where I'm supposed to be buried with my motorcycle.

11:25 PM
@AdrianK Why not drive? You can do that and drink too... Or so I've been told. Or is that the other way around...

@Holocryptic My wife and I have a different take on life. When we were dating and discussing kids, I asked her how many she wanted. She said she wanted 3. I only want 2, so I asked her why. she said, and I quote, "so that if one dies, the other one won't be lonely"

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

@MarkHenderson I suspect using the words "Hot Spare" is frowned upon, here.

That is a great way to look at life

But now that we've got one kid, after the 2nd is born Im going to the doctor and get him to give me the snip. And if that doens't work, he can chop my balls off

11:27 PM
@Holocryptic it's complicated. we're driving her new car back to Seattle from southern idaho. should be interesting.

Unless I'm like Jeff Atwood and the 2nd kid turns out to be twins. Then I'm screwed

@MarkHenderson You've gotten approval from the Mrs to do that, right?

@Holocryptic Hmmm..... I'll worry about that later
The whole permission/forgiveness thing...

@AdrianK You bought a car in Idaho to drive back?

@Holocryptic here they require the Mrs. to sign off on it before they'll do it.

11:28 PM
@AdrianK Are you for srs?!

I think most women would interpret that as your way of saying there haven't been enough arguments lately.

@AdrianK That's insanity. What business is it of hers what you do with your bollocks?!

@AdrianK Where is "here"?

@MarkHenderson WA

@Holocryptic oh yeah. Washington State. And the irony of that was not lost on me either.

11:29 PM
@Holocryptic Western Australia?

@MarkHenderson Close enough. Time zones and all that

I think in a family serious decisions should be discussed by both parties, but at the end of the day, much like abortion, its one person's body so that person has the ultimate choice

Well wherever WA is, i'm not going to move there till after I have my balls decomissioned

@RobMoir I suspect there's less call for backstreet vasectomies.

@RobMoir uh yeah. That's a bit of a one-way street anymore.

11:30 PM
@RobMoir of of course, I would never actually do it without discussing it with the mrs

of course
@MarkHenderson that was

As the Malaysians say: Jalan Sahala.

I've even seen anti-abortion demonstrators here in the UK, lining the street protesting.

@AdrianK Is that a legal requirements, or simply a policy decision by the doctors office?

@AdrianK Is that malay for "You can always adopt?"

11:31 PM
But I'd also be pretty pissed if the mrs had an abortion when I wanted to keep it, and I would be willing to raise the child on my own
After all, it is half my baby

@TomOConnor one way street =)

I am always suspicious of groups that think you can reduce a complex issue to a couple of phrases to chant on a street corner and retain any rational meaning
2

Abortion is an... interesting... topic.

always a classic

11:32 PM
@Zoredache I'm not sure, honestly. There's precious little difference between the effects of legislation and case law in this country anymore though.

It's a shame the F doesn't match the slant of the sign

@AdrianK My local GP has a sign out saying that he won't give referrals or advice regarding the termination of pregnancy, based on his religious beliefs

@MarkHenderson I'd call for him to lose his license.

@TomOConnor What he's doing is not against the law here, and I am the first person to respect someone's religious beliefs. And he's a really, really good GP
If you want to terminate your pregancy, go to a different doctor, problem solved

@MarkHenderson I suppose there's that.. but it seems a bit weird behavior, IMO.

11:34 PM
@MarkHenderson Yeah, it's a very squishy thing.

I mean. I'm the worst person to talk about this. I'm never going (hopefully) to be faced with this decision

@TomOConnor You don't want kids?

I have to say that the idea that someone in that position would fail to give the best professional advice because of their personal morals bothers me
2

@RobMoir Not so sure. I would rather him be honest about it, than not put the sign up and then use trickery to decieve you about it
And when we were pregnant, he did tell us that he would assist us in the termination of the pregnancy if the child had a serious condition

11:37 PM
Mark yes, I understand that he's going about it in the best possible way. It still makes me feel a little uncomfortable

@Holocryptic I'm gay and infertile. The odds aren't with me.

@TomOConnor Adoption

@pauska Adoption doens't invovle abortion :p

@RobMoir hmmm. I think it's better he's honest about it, rather than have to force him to subscribe to something he doesn't believe in

@pauska Then it won't be my abortion.

11:37 PM
(at least, I fucking hope you can't abort an adopted child)

@TomOConnor plenty of gay people adopt. You wouldn't be the first

oh I didnt read your 900 page discussion here, TOO LONG DIDNT READ
I just saw Tom saying he cant produce kids

@TomOConnor Sorry, I was just curious. Didn't mean to push you on it

@Holocryptic it's cool.

@TomOConnor If I remember correctly didn't somone call you a homophobic slur on server fault just trying to be rude and you put them in their place?

11:39 PM
@MarkHenderson sure you can, just do it post-birth. Though you have to be careful, some people classify that as homicide.

I absolutely agree that its better that he's honest about it. As I say, he's going about things in the best way possible under the circumstances. I still feel uncomfortable with the idea that a doctor would compromise their treatment of patients due to something like that.

@MarkHenderson Er. Something like that. There was also jewgate earlier in the week.

SEE! We can have rational, adult discussions in here! So nanny nanny boo boo to you!

@RobMoir Well, he did say he would help us if the child would have a crappy life, but he won't deal with teenage girls who got pregnant at a party

sorry, got carried away

11:40 PM

@TomOConnor Are you also an Israeli?
(or is that Isralite?)

The latter

@MarkHenderson Nah. I'm not really jewish enough to be jewish. It's in the family.. but notquite enough.

Yeah, even though i'd say I was pro choice, I don't like the idea of people doing something so serious as abortion as a form of birth control

@MarkHenderson actually, I think both work...

11:41 PM
@TomOConnor Ah, if you were an Isralite, that would be a 100% hit rate that every single Israeli jew I know is gay

LOL

@MarkHenderson haha.

now i'm wondering why mark tracks these things

I'll ahve to settle for 4/5

Jacob did once put his foot in it. I can't for the life of me remember what he said.

11:42 PM
(I'm counting Joel Spolsky in that, even though I don't actually know him)

@MarkHenderson I didn't realise Joel was gay..

@TomOConnor I remember....

@TomOConnor He doesn't make a big deal out of it, but he does always introduce one of the board members of Fog Creek as "his boyfriend"
So he doesn't hide it

I remember it happening
but not the details

I remember reading a lot of hateful things on the internet about people who had read his books (I own all of them) and then all of a sudden doubting the content of the books because of his sexual orientation

11:43 PM
@MarkHenderson It's not Jeff Atwood, is it?

As if somehow being gay means that good advice suddenly becomes bad?
@TomOConnor Haha, no, it's some guy called Jarrod I think

@MarkHenderson Certainly not fashion advice.

bigotry doesn't make sense
by definition its irrational

Not to rational people, no
jinx

@RobMoir When i was a teenager, i was the equivalent of a redneck (what we called a bogan) and I was really into gay bashing (not literal bashing, but gay people were fun to make fun of). Then when I turned about 17 or 18, all of a sudden I realised that I was just being a dick

11:45 PM
>.>

So I try to make an effort to stop people from doing it these days
Don't worry I'm not a bogan any more

that's part of growing up I guess, we do foolish things when we're young. My parents were racist - shames me to say it but its true - and I had to work hard to get away from that mindset, as did my brother

And my son's favourite colour is pink, so... make of that what you will...

@MarkHenderson 10.0.0.0/8 Just a bogon instead?
2

@RobMoir Oh man, don't get me started on the racism where I used to live.

11:47 PM
I did take great pleasure in taking an indian girlfriend home to meet mum and dad once ;-)

I can't be friends with most of the people I went to school with because of the crap they say when they're drunk

@RobMoir Risky, i'd've thought.

@RobMoir Haha, that would have been fun. Some indian chicks are super hot

they weren't the UK equivalent of the KKK or anything, just very much 1950s / 1960s british "birds of a feather should stick together"

I'm just a fan of women in general

11:48 PM
My in-laws are a bit racist. They're croatian, and if myw ife had brought home a serbian guy, they probably would have hit him with a shovel

@TomOConnor I knew they wouldn't say anything, just choke a bit on the subject and I warned her in advance

@RobMoir What was that crap racist sitcom from the early 70s, with the "our neighbour's a darkie" shit

@MarkHenderson and she was super hot

Mainly because they're so good at eluding me. Women are like my unicorn.

@RobMoir Of course she was, she was your girlfriend
And if she broke up with you, she was also a bitch ;)

11:49 PM
oh believe me those two things were unrelated

@RobMoir In my experience, the hotter they are the more bitchier they are

@TomOConnor there was a lot of crap racist stuff on TV back then

Quickbooks is the most F***up Software EVAR

Mainly because we give people with good looks special treatment, so they grow up with an air if entitlement

@MarkHenderson This is true.

11:49 PM
eh, true of women of any culture ;p

@Jacob Bah humbug to that, you should try integrating with MYOB. They use a C-tree database from 1954

@JourneymanGeek True of men, too.

@JourneymanGeek Your dog is underdressed, sir

I think some people who are super attractive just take it, and your attention, for granted

@Holocryptic: tried to get a hat on him. I have the scars to prove it

11:50 PM
@RobMoir Just try having a conversation with one though

@TomOConnor: Only man i have dated was born a woman ;p

I really don't give a shit how that gucci handbag was on sale, $900 is still TOO FUCKING MUCH FOR A HANDBAG

@JourneymanGeek Interesting.

and was a total self obsessed pain in the ass
(not literally)

yes

11:51 PM
Anyone ever setup Quickbooks on a server?

@MarkHenderson Which is why the rucksack was invented.

my girlfriend is russian (moved to norway when she was 7)
imagine the shit she's gotten over the years over the whole bride.ru thing

@Jacob Ew

@Jacob Nay. I suspect you'll have massive lockfile issues.

quickbooks? on a server? I'd rather install OS/2

11:52 PM
(there was an explosion of norwegian men marrying russian hookers before bride.ru)

@pauska If my mother in law dies before my father in law is too old, we're going to get him a russian bride

and I'm not exactly known for my love of OS/2 ;-)

It will be a business arrangement and they will both be happy. She gets to come to a better country and he gets someone to cook for him.

@pauska: hookers need love too. Just ask house!

and bender from futurama. He knows all about hookerbots

11:53 PM
:O Pauska has a girlfriend

@JourneymanGeek I watched a Louis Theroux documentary on hookers, he went to a proper brothel, not one of these dodgey ones, those girls were earning in excess of $40,000 a month

1) Sysadmins can get girlfriends?

Some even get married

@TomOConnor Sure, if you want. Or you can have a boyfriend. But if you have a boyfriend you can't always get married.

11:53 PM
user image
4

INORITE?

Mind * blown*

@MarkHenderson: at that point they're professional ladies of negotiable affection, not hookers ;p

@RobMoir ... did you take that photo just then, or did you have it stored somewhere?

@RobMoir: its one of the OSes i've been curious about simply cause it was a dead end... and yet it kept running so long

11:54 PM
hmmm, I wonder how long before stuff gets flagged...

@JourneymanGeek a lot of kiosk type apps ran on it - ATMs for example.

@Holocryptic Ages, we're all mature (regular) adults tonight.
@RobMoir And now they're all NT4.

yep. "progress" they call it.

@TomOConnor heh

@RobMoir: in short, where people never had to mess with it at all?

11:56 PM
@TomOConnor So, have you ever visited the United States?

eh, i think my bank runs XP ;p
least teh last time i got a cryptic error message

@AdrianK Yeah. I grew up there ;)

@JourneymanGeek That's OK my supermarket runs NT4 workstation on their registers

@JourneymanGeek not surprising. They take forever to upgrade

@JourneymanGeek pretty much. It's not something you're going to want on your desktop

11:57 PM
@TomOConnor Oh, sounded like you were talking about some place where they have mature adults..

@RobMoir: i donno, i don't like the idea of desktops OSes anywhere other than desktops

@AdrianK Well, there's a few of us here who aren't in the USA.

Supermarkets around here use some modified Windows 95 thingy.

Me, Rob, Pauska, at least.

I'm from Canada.

11:58 PM
@TomOConnor Yeah, makes sense. At least there's some hope for the species.

Also, hello everyone! I haven't talked much here, i just idle

@SimonSheehan Hello

@JourneymanGeek I hear that but OS/2 was a desktop or server type deal much like the windows NT family

@SimonSheehan Hi!

Singapore

11:58 PM
People see me lurkin. They hatin.

How's everyone doing?

Waiting for lunch time to tick over. 1 minute to go...

High on Percocet. So pretty good.

off to bed soon. its late and cold

@Holocryptic And now we're not sure if you're being serious or joking...

11:59 PM
@Holocryptic sweet. that stuff was fun when I shattered my arm.
