@KorvinStarmast "Adventure path" as a synonym for "campaign" started with 3.x - at least in Dungeon magazine (which was produced by Paizo at the time... before they made Pathfinder).
Going into battle, standing in front of a medusa and 2 nagas. I have line of sight on all 3. The DM says to make wisdom saving throw, without describing why.
After failing the saving throw, I'm mind controlled by a naga. When I question why, the DM tells me the naga cast a spell (but wouldn't t...
yeah. and it's only happened as of today. Firefox did get an update, so I restarted my browser last night to install it. I think this is my first time trying to edit since then, so I suspect it's responsible
I played my first online game on Saturday. Tunnels & Trolls, with no battle map, so we didn't need a VTT. We used Zoom for voice & video, but I think next time we're using Webex. I tried out Shmeppy as a mapping tool. It's fairly simple, which is its strength and weakness. I won't be using it as a VTT.
There's not really much to say about it aside from the title. The 2k+ inline editor used to work, now it doesn't. The edit link now goes to the full edit page instead, and it did happen somewhat late (in +2 GMT anyway) today.
Aside from me, it has been reproduced by at least some other users in...

Looking at the description for Brindol in Red Hand of Doom it says:
AL NG, LE
Any idea what these mean?
I assume AL is Adventurer's League but not sure about the rest.
The full text reads:

@MikeQ I've actually stopped playing. I'm finding I don't have the focus/patience/energy/drive to RPG while homeschooling and WFHing and worrying.... So one group's on hiatus, another's doing boardgame nights.
And I've made the decision that when I do go back, it's going to be to specifically assemble a "not D&D" group. I'm tired of years of pitch seasons going by where some of us throw out a dozen different ideas, and we always end up playing the most recent 5e hardcover.
Online board games also sounds fun. Some friends of mine are doing a play-by-post Diplomacy game, except there were too few slots available and they filled quickly.
I'm currently preparing a session in my campaign where one of my players is going to consider signing a contract with a devil. While writing the contract, I noticed something that seems like a loophole that definitely isn't worth it, but it looked interesting nevertheless.
Imagine the following s...
@MikeQ I found my first few campaigns through /r/lfg, then other campaigns through the ones I met in those. then one of the players in one of those groups started a server, which has gradually grown, and I mostly find campaigns through there (and occasionally still through /r/lfg).
The Staff of Flowers is an intentionally weak item, but depending on how the rules are interpreted it seems like it can be very VERY useful.
My main question is this, Since certain flowers grow as buds on trees will the staff grow an entire tree just to create a requested flower?
For example, I...
I kinda dig the recent "stress of wish" question. And I find myself wishing OP had just gone hog-wild on relaying their dream to us, "Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath"-style, up to the 30K character limit =)
(But not wishing they'd done so. That'd be too stressful.)
@V2Blast Subreddits are difficult to sift through. Seeing way too many D&D 5e, would be nice if I could sort by system and timezone, or expected number of sessions
Right, I'm thinking they're probably not close enough at this point.
Generally, I think that if we are closing questions as dupes of other closed questions, we can be doing something better. It's not always our fault though. The system is far from perfect.
@MikeQ IIRC systems are tagged in the title, though there's a generic "other" tag (necessary so that AutoMod can remove posts missing the system tag). You can also ignore search results for 5e by typing -"5e", I think
Is closing a question as a dupe even possible without supplying a non-closed end-target? I think it shouldn't be allowed by the system in theory, but I don't know how this works in practice.
@NautArch back before microsoft and google ran our mail exchanges, we had a rule to drop ALL traffic from domains less than a week old. That caught the vast majority of spam we were seeing.
I was just talking about my own process of finding games :P
on an unrelated note, our Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus group just realized that, like, half of us failed to notice the "reroll 1s" part of our ability score generation rules. our DM let us fix that... there have been some notable changes in our scores :P
Aren't the posts on /r/lfg rather time dependent? Extensive tagging or a form submission is probably more work than a DM needs to put out there in order to get a dozen or so player applicants.
@GcL I mean... Yes, people aren't recruiting months in advance, but I don't see what that has to do with the rest of your point. D&D 5e in particular is popular, so DMs for that tend to have an easy time finding interested players. but that doesn't really have anything to do with how far in advance they're recruiting. plus DMs often want good players, and not just take the first people who reply without even reading the post
for non-5e games, it's often much harder finding players
@NautArch I use LastPass these days. Makes password rotation for most of the things I use pretty easy. Also, I don't have to remember the passwords anymore. Just the LP one and my email passwords.
@V2Blast The effort of extensive tagging or fitting a form is seems like more than is needed for most of the posters to get the results they need from an ephemerally relevant post.
@GcL That said, you could say the same for /r/SampleSize (another sub I've modded for much longer), but I can tell you that our title rules there save respondents a lot of time in that they don't end up clicking on posts and maybe even starting to apply only to find out the survey's not relevant to them or not open to them. a similar argument could be made for /r/lfg.
even if the submitter doesn't really care if they waste others' time, the people whose time is wasted often do
@GcL September should be the 7th month, October should be the 8th month, November should be the 9th month and December should be the 10th. It's all in their names
@Himitsu_no_Yami Naming is hard. Probably somebody with a different indexing base or had to do an insert and they were using their labels as indexes. Classic rookie mistake.
@NautArch Except Blackrazor... or the dozens of adventurers seeking it.
I think that's the AL explanation for why you can't keep it for the next adventure. The character basically has to spend all their time appeasing it AND avoiding the other adventurers and BBEGs looking to kill them for it.
@GcL Apparently before we used the Gregorian calendar November was the 9th month. November Latin: November. From the word novem, nine, because it was the 9th month in the old Roman calendar.
@GcL Heh. Yep. We're just starting the next 3rd of the dungeon, so I'm not sure I"ll actually need to worry about what happens after. Depending on how long this quarantine goes on for, that is.
In other news, there's so little to do at work lately and most people are working from home that I spent almost my entire shift yesterday sleeping and nobody said a thing
@Himitsu_no_Yami Look, when the emperor wants a new month are you going to be the one that says "but sir, if you put it in the awful cold weather instead of the lovely warm weather the numbers will still be right"?
@Himitsu_no_Yami There's a nice static calendar somebody at JPL follows? uses? Lemme see if I can find it. My vague recollection is that it has leap weeks or months at some long interval. Also, still doesn't handle leap seconds any better than our current calendar.
> Shine with the power of the mind in today's Unearthed Arcana! We revisit several psi-themed options, giving characters of many sorts the ability to unlock their psionic potential. Check out the article here: t.co/TYyAcwciwJ #DnD —twitter.com/JeremyECrawford/status/1250117562257424384
@GcL It feels more like ther was some work done in advance and then they ask for playtesting. Now it just seems like they're writing stuff down and tossing it out there.
@Himitsu_no_Yami Probably true, although I think the probabilistic resource pool is a better implementation of "unpredictable weird powers" than the original Wild Magic table
It's all gone downhill since ThAC0. Kids having to learn algebra in school instead of sitting around a table with older kids learning about how to stab a zombie. I tell you. They even took a T out of TTRPG! /S
I don't want to find out that my plan to use telepathy several times in a day is going to fail because I accidentally rolled a 6 and then a 4 on the first two uses.
What might be a lot more interesting is if you could choose. Like "If you choose, you can instead take the maximum value on this die roll. In exchange, you must decrease the size of your psionic die. This reduction lasts until the end of your next Long Rest, and if you reduce a d4, you lose the die entirely until it is restored at the end of your next long rest."
So this is kinda off-topic and I have a question about it for a different universe on scifi but what would you guys do if you had a player whose soul for various reasons was pledged to several gods or immortal god-like entities and then they died. What would happen to their soul?
Dude--totally do it. Some of my best childhood D&D memories are when we'd set up arena-style fights between gods we were playing (from Deities & Demigods)
PCs have the job of influencing the tournament (perhaps in violation of the rules...) to ensure that the victorious god is the least likely to be cruel to the soul.
@MikeQ hmm that could actually be useful if I ran that in a game. Randomly assign each player a god and give them a character sheet for said god and let them play the fight and tell them to take it as seriously as if they actually were that god (to avoid any throwing for reasons like "oh this god shouldn't have this soul")
@Himitsu_no_Yami That could work. Personally I'd have the players be the gods' avatars or champions, and let them build them as high-level characters for a one-time PvP event. That way you don't deal with any large-scale cosmic fallout.
If the players aren't interested in PvP, then maybe some cosmic fluke happens, and the soul becomes its own entity in the astral plane. Maybe it comes back later as a NPC.
@NautArch I think it's totally fine to not like the content proposed in UA, but I would totally disagree that it's due to a lack of effort or laziness or a lack of creativity or whatever. If they always knew exactly what people wanted and how to make it work in the game, they probably wouldn't need the UA process :P
also, just for completeness and including all the relevant links:
> Shine with the power of the mind in this installment of Unearthed Arcana! Today we revisit several psi-themed options that we released in the past few months. Studying your feedback on those options, we’ve crafted this new collection of subclasses, spells, and feats, found in the PDF below. We’ll release a survey soon so that you can let us know what you think of today’s playtest content.
Direct PDF link: https://media.wizards.com/2020/dnd/downloads/UA2020_PsionicOptions.pdf The survey for the previous Spells and Magic Tattoos UA is also out: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5535817/D-D-UA-Survey-48-Spells-and-Magic-Tattoos
@V2Blast Compared to the earlier UA releases, these are much further back in the development cycle in my opinion (and apparently Korvin's, too). WHether that's due to laziness is a guess. But it is something I, and others, have noticed.
@GcL I have great hopes for the psionic class, but they are running into some severe bloat/power problems since they still need to account for bounded accuracy.
And as one of my older answers discusses "do we really need a third kind of magic?" when we already have ki?
But, without psionics, we can't get Dark Sun, and I was hoping ...
I've been seeing mention recently that the entity referenced in Rise of Tiamat's final chapter is not actually spoilers but just an avatar; where does this claim come from, does anyone know?
@DavidCoffron I've seen that claim too, and I've seen others disagree - but I haven't played/run RoT itself so I can't confirm myself whether it's true or where the claim originates
@NautArch XGtE being published seems to have been a significant sea change in the amount of effort that went into UA. But a few UAs ago they had some class changes/feats/invocations that weren't bad, with a few notable exceptions. And with Eberron and Matt Mercer's stuff going "official" pressure came off of the UA for new content... as I see it.
@V2Blast True. My problem with it has always been the interaction between it and magic. Especially when the effects are the same or in direct opposition to one another. E.g. in older editions tower of iron will always beat out psionics. So fighting ithillids, it was a must.
Just played a wonderfully chaotic and hilarious Roll for Shoes session with RPG newbies. Best first session ever, it had everything: Lizard people, sentient tractors, murderous dogs, zombie bouncers (all played by players) and everyone died in the end. Huge success.
It took me all of 3 minutes to read the rules, and now I want to play/run a game of it SO badly. I may have to rope my roommates into a evening of silliness
I feel like this has been asked before or the answer is obvious or something, but I can't find it: dnd-5e, can you use counterspell on spells cast from magic items?
Some magic items allow you to cast spells using them, even if you are normally unable to cast such spells, such as the Wand of Magic Missiles or the Helm of Telepathy.
When you cast a spell with such a magic item, can you be visibly seen to be casting the spell? This is relevant to
Whether or...
