The Monday-itis is strong today
Probably cos it's in stage Tuesday
Oh, is there stage time, like there's stage directions? Stage right is audience left, and stage Tuesday is audience Monday?
@KorvinStarmast "Adventure path" as a synonym for "campaign" started with 3.x - at least in Dungeon magazine (which was produced by Paizo at the time... before they made Pathfinder).

@KorvinStarmast He was in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, not in The Dark Knight (except maybe in flashbacks) IIRC

Q: Should the DM describe NPC spellcasting so that players can use Counterspell?

After failing the saving throw, I'm mind controlled by a naga. When I question why, the DM tells me the naga cast a spell (but wouldn't t...

@Adeptus Aah, thanks. I missed PF so I was grabbing a bit there.
is it just me, or are others no longer able to edit posts inline (i.e. without going to a new screen)?
trying to figure out if it's due to an SE update or a Firefox update or something else
it was working fine yesterday, before I updated
00:52
@V2Blast It's just you. no wait ... uh working so far today for me.
I can edit tags inline, but clicking edit below the post takes me to a new screen
@V2Blast well that's weird. Lemme chek.
hmm, not seeing the same thing, I use Chrome.
yeah. and it's only happened as of today. Firefox did get an update, so I restarted my browser last night to install it. I think this is my first time trying to edit since then, so I suspect it's responsible
TILT: browser updates can be fickle.
Am reviewing the Salt march encounters ... no promises. ;-)

00:58
How is the salty marsh game going?
going pretty well so far :)
I played my first online game on Saturday. Tunnels & Trolls, with no battle map, so we didn't need a VTT. We used Zoom for voice & video, but I think next time we're using Webex. I tried out Shmeppy as a mapping tool. It's fairly simple, which is its strength and weakness. I won't be using it as a VTT.

Q: The 2k+ inline editor doesn't seem to work anymore

ZoeThere's not really much to say about it aside from the title. The 2k+ inline editor used to work, now it doesn't. The edit link now goes to the full edit page instead, and it did happen somewhat late (in +2 GMT anyway) today. Aside from me, it has been reproduced by at least some other users in...

@MikeQ I have suggested doing our weekly game on discord or on Roll20, but unfortunately the DM's PC is smoking.
It really slows things down cos it goes for a cigarette like, every 20 mins
Roll20 has a LFG feature to search games, but it seems all the wait queues are packed

@MikeQ Sounds like we need to start our own game cough Dark Heresy cough
@MikeQ I've actually stopped playing. I'm finding I don't have the focus/patience/energy/drive to RPG while homeschooling and WFHing and worrying.... So one group's on hiatus, another's doing boardgame nights.
Ben
Ben
@nitsua60 Yeah, we have been playing board games a bit more
03:51
And I've made the decision that when I do go back, it's going to be to specifically assemble a "not D&D" group. I'm tired of years of pitch seasons going by where some of us throw out a dozen different ideas, and we always end up playing the most recent 5e hardcover.
But the only place I'm going now is to bed!
whoosh!
Have fun counting (other) sheep
Online board games also sounds fun. Some friends of mine are doing a play-by-post Diplomacy game, except there were too few slots available and they filled quickly.

@nitsua60 WE've been switching it up generally once a year, that's how we've switched from 5e to PF to Numenera to SW

@MikeQ I found my first few campaigns through /r/lfg, then other campaigns through the ones I met in those. then one of the players in one of those groups started a server, which has gradually grown, and I mostly find campaigns through there (and occasionally still through /r/lfg).

I kinda dig the recent "stress of wish" question. And I find myself wishing OP had just gone hog-wild on relaying their dream to us, "Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath"-style, up to the 30K character limit =)
(But not wishing they'd done so. That'd be too stressful.)
@nitsua60 how is it different than the related questions?
@NautArch I didn't look.
@nitsua60 <rings one of your bells>shame!</ring>
14:02
@NautArch oh no...
@nitsua60 hah!
@Rubiksmoose yeah, i've had to contact a few of hte major marketing email folks like mailchimp to block my address, but they just keep coming.
@NautArch ugh, that must be annoying
@Rubiksmoose i'm having to consider changing my email
which is awful
Oh yeah, that is not an appealing option :(
@NautArch Aww... man, now we're going to have to deep-clean the tower. An outsider's been in it!
14:13
@nitsua60 ha!
@V2Blast Subreddits are difficult to sift through. Seeing way too many D&D 5e, would be nice if I could sort by system and timezone, or expected number of sessions
14:25
Before I drop the dupe hammer on that recent wish question, can someone else take a look and make sure i'm not seeing dupes where there are none?

1 hour later…
15:38
@NautArch But now it's duped to a question that is duped to another question. Do you think the question just closed is the same as this one?
@Rubiksmoose That's a question for that question :)
I didn't dupe that one.
and if we don't think that ones is a dupe, then we should undupe it
Right, I'm thinking they're probably not close enough at this point.
Generally, I think that if we are closing questions as dupes of other closed questions, we can be doing something better. It's not always our fault though. The system is far from perfect.
@Rubiksmoose yeah, i'd be okay with unduping Tempestas' question
oh, i can't!
i'd alrady voted to reopen it
I got you :)
ha, and it's my answer.
16:05
@MikeQ IIRC systems are tagged in the title, though there's a generic "other" tag (necessary so that AutoMod can remove posts missing the system tag). You can also ignore search results for 5e by typing -"5e", I think
GcL
GcL
@Rubiksmoose So a dupe of dupe gets you to your answer, but just not as fast? Like a copy of a copy just isn't as sharp?
Also, can we then have circular dupe chains?
A dupe of B dupe of C dupe of A?
Call it the unmerry go round of user experiences or possibly dupendency hell
Is closing a question as a dupe even possible without supplying a non-closed end-target? I think it shouldn't be allowed by the system in theory, but I don't know how this works in practice.
@GcL hah! I think the system prevents that at least though I'm not sure.
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica It is. Naut was able to close that question as a dupe of a question that was already closed itself as a dupe.
I have no idea why the system allows it.
/me shakes its cephalothorax disapprovingly.
It may also be possible to close two questions as dupes of each other
16:16
lol
@V2Blast Hey wait a minute, you're one of the mods on /r/lfg
GcL
GcL
@NautArch back before microsoft and google ran our mail exchanges, we had a rule to drop ALL traffic from domains less than a week old. That caught the vast majority of spam we were seeing.
@MikeQ lol, yes, as of fairly recently
<shameless self promotion detected>
I was modded 2 months ago: reddit.com/r/lfg/about/moderators
I was just talking about my own process of finding games :P
on an unrelated note, our Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus group just realized that, like, half of us failed to notice the "reroll 1s" part of our ability score generation rules. our DM let us fix that... there have been some notable changes in our scores :P
GcL
GcL
16:20
Aren't the posts on /r/lfg rather time dependent? Extensive tagging or a form submission is probably more work than a DM needs to put out there in order to get a dozen or so player applicants.
@GcL time dependent in what way?
I mean, the tagging thing is subreddit rules, to make it easy for people to find what they're looking for and ignore what they're not looking for
anyway, my original scores were 9, 15, 10, 16, 11, 9
my new totals: 13, 15, 12, 16, 11, 16
GcL
GcL
@V2Blast Like craigslists postings. Campaign or one shot player slots open right now. Two months from now... don't bother responding.
@GcL That would be nice. I'm currently going through and updating/cleaning up passwords to lock my personal stuff down.
but still frustrating as hell
@GcL I mean... Yes, people aren't recruiting months in advance, but I don't see what that has to do with the rest of your point. D&D 5e in particular is popular, so DMs for that tend to have an easy time finding interested players. but that doesn't really have anything to do with how far in advance they're recruiting. plus DMs often want good players, and not just take the first people who reply without even reading the post
for non-5e games, it's often much harder finding players
GcL
GcL
@NautArch I use LastPass these days. Makes password rotation for most of the things I use pretty easy. Also, I don't have to remember the passwords anymore. Just the LP one and my email passwords.
16:25
@GcL Dashlane here
GcL
GcL
@V2Blast The effort of extensive tagging or fitting a form is seems like more than is needed for most of the posters to get the results they need from an ephemerally relevant post.
@V2Blast Significantly better!
@NautArch This is starting to sound like an Ocean's Eleven-level shell game you're playing, buddy... =)
@nitsua60 Don't take your eyes off the game!
@GcL I didn't make the rules there :P
@GcL That said, you could say the same for /r/SampleSize (another sub I've modded for much longer), but I can tell you that our title rules there save respondents a lot of time in that they don't end up clicking on posts and maybe even starting to apply only to find out the survey's not relevant to them or not open to them. a similar argument could be made for /r/lfg.
even if the submitter doesn't really care if they waste others' time, the people whose time is wasted often do
anyway
it is what it is
17:06
I just found out that at least half the months are in the wrong place. Now my brain hurts
I may ask this on mainsight, but in white plume, if the boiling bubble is burst...it's a tpk if they don't get to Wave?
GcL
GcL
@Himitsu_no_Yami Like on the backside of the calendar instead of the front of the pages? or like, hidden under a desk somewhere?
@NautArch idk White Plume but I'm gonna say yes. TPK your party
@Himitsu_no_Yami ha!
@GcL September should be the 7th month, October should be the 8th month, November should be the 9th month and December should be the 10th. It's all in their names
17:08
I mean, even if it's just the damage across all, that's a lot of damage to deal with. Except for the blackrazor holder. Ain't nothin' gonna kill him.
That also means that July and August are in the wrong place
GcL
GcL
@Himitsu_no_Yami Naming is hard. Probably somebody with a different indexing base or had to do an insert and they were using their labels as indexes. Classic rookie mistake.
@NautArch Except Blackrazor... or the dozens of adventurers seeking it.
I think that's the AL explanation for why you can't keep it for the next adventure. The character basically has to spend all their time appeasing it AND avoiding the other adventurers and BBEGs looking to kill them for it.
@GcL Apparently before we used the Gregorian calendar November was the 9th month. November Latin: November. From the word novem, nine, because it was the 9th month in the old Roman calendar.
GcL
GcL
@Himitsu_no_Yami Leave those where they are. At least here. They're still in the right spot for this latitude.
@Himitsu_no_Yami So the months are roamin' around a little. Seems fitting.
@GcL I want to hate you for this pun but I just can't
GcL
GcL
17:13
It's good for them to get out and see the year from a different perspective every few millennia. Helps them keep perspective.
@GcL Heh. Yep. We're just starting the next 3rd of the dungeon, so I'm not sure I"ll actually need to worry about what happens after. Depending on how long this quarantine goes on for, that is.
In other news, there's so little to do at work lately and most people are working from home that I spent almost my entire shift yesterday sleeping and nobody said a thing
@Himitsu_no_Yami Look, when the emperor wants a new month are you going to be the one that says "but sir, if you put it in the awful cold weather instead of the lovely warm weather the numbers will still be right"?
4
@Glazius yes
GcL
GcL
@Himitsu_no_Yami What about when the emperor says "No stab backs"?
17:21
@GcL Stab back anyway, particularly in the back
GcL
GcL
OG Emperor's New Clothes was a funeral shroud.
So the solution as I see it is to change the names of the months after the two new ones to fix the numbers
or just remake the entire calendar again
@Himitsu_no_Yami I'm so sorry!
GcL
GcL
@Himitsu_no_Yami There's a nice static calendar somebody at JPL follows? uses? Lemme see if I can find it. My vague recollection is that it has leap weeks or months at some long interval. Also, still doesn't handle leap seconds any better than our current calendar.
I think it was this one
I think I'd prefer the alternate ISO week date, but that might just be due to my current preference for ISO 8601 dates anyway.
that first one looks good but the months are still in the wrong places and it's driving me crazy now
GcL
GcL
17:42
How do you feel about the modern use of the word decimate?
@GcL now that I think of it i dislike it
GcL
GcL
How about ad hoc?
That one I have no clue about

@Xirema they changed the soulknife... I don't like it anymore
17:50
@Xirema I've said it before, but what they've done with UA is a real shame. I don't even read them anymore.
Well at least the new mechanics are unique.
GcL
GcL
Do d3 and d2 occur anywhere in 5e ?
Unique? maybe. Good? I don't think so
@GcL D2 or D3 called for? Or something that calls for a 1 in 3.
GcL
GcL
@NautArch More combat mechanics doesn't really make for better stories. I think it's diminishing returns with adding more combat options for stuff.
17:54
@NautArch There's the inherent problem that adding more classes / subclasses / races / other character building options can only make the game worse.
@GcL Not even combat mechanics are my issue. They just don't seem to be thinking anything through and just throwing it over the wall.
@GcL Some of the XGtE encounter tables, but I think that's it
@NautArch The thing with wish?
GcL
GcL
@NautArch That is kind of what playtesting is about.
@MarkWells yeah, that'd be one. I'm pretty sure there are others.
17:55
@NautArch I mean, in terms of providing playtest material, that seems like an appropriate approach.
GcL
GcL
@Someone_Evil I liked the XGtE content. More encounter tables are pretty close to just adding on to the exposition of combat encounters though.
@GcL It feels more like ther was some work done in advance and then they ask for playtesting. Now it just seems like they're writing stuff down and tossing it out there.
Like, I've always been "you can only use UA material if you talk to me first and I have a chance to look it over".
There's no internal development first. Just ideas. Same stuff I downvote homebrew here for.
They aren't putting the effort in
GcL
GcL
@NautArch It's formatted nicely and reasonably organized. There's probably a fair amount of effort that goes into creating the UA stuff.
17:56
@MarkWells technically that's 33/100 not 33/99 ( = 1/3) which is not significantly different but is different nonetheless
@NautArch I honestly don't feel like that's true.
@GcL Maybe? Maybe there's still less than there was before.
@Himitsu_no_Yami Probably true, although I think the probabilistic resource pool is a better implementation of "unpredictable weird powers" than the original Wild Magic table
Like, there's definitely a lot of variance in the quality of what they put out.
@Xirema Well, that's like my opinion, man. :P
17:57
@NautArch =P
GcL
GcL
@NautArch Well back in my day ... and we liked it!
We can each feel differently about it. I just don't like what they're doing now.
A lot of them are still conceptually unique, which is more than I can say for the expanded content of 3.x/PF
GcL
GcL
It's all gone downhill since ThAC0. Kids having to learn algebra in school instead of sitting around a table with older kids learning about how to stab a zombie. I tell you. They even took a T out of TTRPG! /S

18:02
I just watched about 3/4 of the people in my section of the building just get up and leave. I'll never get used to seeing that
Do not add characters who are witches to your games.
@Xirema why not?
If you add witches to your games, you'll have to give them voices. And the voice you pick will kill your throat.
This is a lesson I have just learned the hard way. XD
@Xirema *laughs in Roll20 text chat*
I've been voicing characters badly for years. Common sense advice won't stop me now.
18:05
@MikeQ The trick is using a different voice each time.
@MikeQ would you care to join us?
I just tried to take a sip of Dr Pepper with the top still on the bottle... Someone save me
@KorvinStarmast Depends on scheduling. Message me on discord.
@Himitsu_no_Yami Sounds like you're already protecting yourself well from the Dr. Pepper
@Adeptus envious. out T&T game died after three sessions. Player migration. :( Only me and the GM left, so he hung it up.
18:08
@Someone_Evil but it's the best soda
@nitsua60 sure, we could float that on meta and see if it gets consenus or a series of passionate arguments
@Himitsu_no_Yami Do what specifically do you not like about the new Soulknife?
I feel like its essence is still there.
@Xirema personally I dislike the entire Psionic Talent feature
@Himitsu_no_Yami Ah, gotcha.
It's a weird feature, although it seems more inventive than the previous psionic revision
Nov 25 '19 at 23:49, by MikeQ
@Miniman Personally I was hoping that the inevitable psionic fighters and rogues would get more interesting features than "magic stab"
18:15
The 9th level feature is kinda cool but I don't like everything going back to that weird size changing d6
or the fact that the telepathy requires you to roll that die in the Psionic Talent feature.
Yeah, the one thing that kind of bugs me is that it can be RNG-dependent whether you even have access to your features.
@NautArch been true for over a year ...
That seems like the kind of thing that could make playing a Psionic class frustrating.
I've actually played with the Soulknife a decent bit (up to like level 5 but still) and that telepathy has been pretty useful for me
I don't want to find out that my plan to use telepathy several times in a day is going to fail because I accidentally rolled a 6 and then a 4 on the first two uses.
18:18
@MikeQ I will post in back room, can't get to discord until later.
What might be a lot more interesting is if you could choose. Like "If you choose, you can instead take the maximum value on this die roll. In exchange, you must decrease the size of your psionic die. This reduction lasts until the end of your next Long Rest, and if you reduce a d4, you lose the die entirely until it is restored at the end of your next long rest."
So this is kinda off-topic and I have a question about it for a different universe on scifi but what would you guys do if you had a player whose soul for various reasons was pledged to several gods or immortal god-like entities and then they died. What would happen to their soul?
@Himitsu_no_Yami Divine Battle Royale. The gods battle in a tournament, survivor gets the soul.
lmao I like it
(I've been trying to figure out what's gonna happen to my PC's soul after my most recent Skyrim playthrough)
@Himitsu_no_Yami Their soul is being pulled in multiple directions making it go nowhere. This is why this ghost/revenant/something is haunting here
18:23
Dude--totally do it. Some of my best childhood D&D memories are when we'd set up arena-style fights between gods we were playing (from Deities & Demigods)
PCs have the job of influencing the tournament (perhaps in violation of the rules...) to ensure that the victorious god is the least likely to be cruel to the soul.
@Xirema much prefer that
@Xirema or what about that the victorious god is the one most likely to be willing to part with the soul (for resurrection purposes)
@Himitsu_no_Yami Also that.
Is this one soul valuable enough that gods would battle over it directly, or would they settle it in a less grand way?
18:27
@MikeQ I mean, they'd probably just designate proxies to fight on their behalf.
Also you could always have a cosmic model where creatures have multiple souls.
@MikeQ in the case of my question on scifi, this is probably the single most valuable soul there is
Hmm. You could have a battle royale and let the players play it out in combat. Or maybe something less conventional, like a court case or game show.
@Himitsu_no_Yami what if it shatters and gets lost in the astra plane
@MikeQ hmm that could actually be useful if I ran that in a game. Randomly assign each player a god and give them a character sheet for said god and let them play the fight and tell them to take it as seriously as if they actually were that god (to avoid any throwing for reasons like "oh this god shouldn't have this soul")
18:36
@Himitsu_no_Yami That could work. Personally I'd have the players be the gods' avatars or champions, and let them build them as high-level characters for a one-time PvP event. That way you don't deal with any large-scale cosmic fallout.
If the players aren't interested in PvP, then maybe some cosmic fluke happens, and the soul becomes its own entity in the astral plane. Maybe it comes back later as a NPC.
@NautArch I think it's totally fine to not like the content proposed in UA, but I would totally disagree that it's due to a lack of effort or laziness or a lack of creativity or whatever. If they always knew exactly what people wanted and how to make it work in the game, they probably wouldn't need the UA process :P
also, just for completeness and including all the relevant links:
A new set of UA playtest content is out for D&D 5e - Psionic Options Revisited: dnd.wizards.com/articles/unearthed-arcana/…
> Shine with the power of the mind in this installment of Unearthed Arcana! Today we revisit several psi-themed options that we released in the past few months. Studying your feedback on those options, we’ve crafted this new collection of subclasses, spells, and feats, found in the PDF below. We’ll release a survey soon so that you can let us know what you think of today’s playtest content.
Direct PDF link: https://media.wizards.com/2020/dnd/downloads/UA2020_PsionicOptions.pdf
The survey for the previous Spells and Magic Tattoos UA is also out: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5535817/D-D-UA-Survey-48-Spells-and-Magic-Tattoos
@V2Blast Compared to the earlier UA releases, these are much further back in the development cycle in my opinion (and apparently Korvin's, too). WHether that's due to laziness is a guess. But it is something I, and others, have noticed.
GcL
GcL
@NautArch I dunno.. the mystic psionic stuff seemed hella half baked.
The Eberron UA was under scoped. It did a decent job of gauging interest in the material apparently.
@GcL Imma trying to give the benefit of the doubt a bit more. Being Nice :)
@GcL I have great hopes for the psionic class, but they are running into some severe bloat/power problems since they still need to account for bounded accuracy.
And as one of my older answers discusses "do we really need a third kind of magic?" when we already have ki?
But, without psionics, we can't get Dark Sun, and I was hoping ...
18:54
Psionics in general is hard because 50 different people seem to want 50 different things, and most of them are dissimilar to one another :P
these (haven't read the latest UA yet) are definitely not "last pass before publication" status, but I don't generally expect them to be
I've been seeing mention recently that the entity referenced in Rise of Tiamat's final chapter is not actually spoilers but just an avatar; where does this claim come from, does anyone know?
because by the time they're in that state, that usually means any problems with them won't be fixed by the time they're published (e.g. Hexblade)
@NautArch they know it's more of a variable topic, so guaging interest early and often is important
@DavidCoffron I've seen that claim too, and I've seen others disagree - but I haven't played/run RoT itself so I can't confirm myself whether it's true or where the claim originates
@V2Blast thankfully, artificer got two tweaks before E:RFtLW came out.

@AncientSwordRage Sure. But why is there an impression amongst many that there is a difference that started about a year ago?
@MikeQ but large scale cosmic fallout is half the fun!
@NautArch Probably a change in how R&D works for the D&D studio
Nostalgia? Disillusionment? :P
or that
I follow a log of the MTG stuff, and a similar re-shuffle happened there 1-2 years ago
@NautArch XGtE being published seems to have been a significant sea change in the amount of effort that went into UA. But a few UAs ago they had some class changes/feats/invocations that weren't bad, with a few notable exceptions. And with Eberron and Matt Mercer's stuff going "official" pressure came off of the UA for new content... as I see it.

@V2Blast True. My problem with it has always been the interaction between it and magic. Especially when the effects are the same or in direct opposition to one another. E.g. in older editions tower of iron will always beat out psionics. So fighting ithillids, it was a must.

So I've been reading through some old questions on the stack, and I stumbled upon something glorious: Roll for Shoes: story-games.com/forums/discussion/11348/…
Still one of my favourite systems for quick one-off games that don't take themselves too seriously

Just played a wonderfully chaotic and hilarious Roll for Shoes session with RPG newbies. Best first session ever, it had everything: Lizard people, sentient tractors, murderous dogs, zombie bouncers (all played by players) and everyone died in the end. Huge success.
@RevenantBacon I've only played it once but I'd do it again in a heartbeat

It took me all of 3 minutes to read the rules, and now I want to play/run a game of it SO badly. I may have to rope my roommates into a evening of silliness
That... was interesting. I'm going to delete Smokey's message, though, so nobody else has to stumble across it.
Yeah, the question was already deleted when I saw the message. How bad was it?
@ACuriousMind best TPK ever. :-)
@nitsua60 Grins smugly because I have Smokey Spam blocked
@RevenantBacon It was a rude comment about your mother, in another language, repeated about a hundred times.
Ah I see.

@RevenantBacon Roll For Shoes is awesome. Pay special attention to how new skills don't emerge from what you did, but from what happened to you.
This encourages the player to narrate with more detail and care in order to justify innovative skill trees.

@KorvinStarmast Ta for the style edits!

If we already had a tag for splitting the party and I failed to find it, I've made a synonym for it

@illustro enjoyed the answer thanks for taking the time.

The OSR sandbox tool Maze Rats by Questing Beast Games is now free.
Don't you hate when there's COBOLds in your dungeon?

I feel like this has been asked before or the answer is obvious or something, but I can't find it: dnd-5e, can you use counterspell on spells cast from magic items?
11
Q: When casting a spell using a magic item, is the casting itself visible?

VigilSome magic items allow you to cast spells using them, even if you are normally unable to cast such spells, such as the Wand of Magic Missiles or the Helm of Telepathy. When you cast a spell with such a magic item, can you be visibly seen to be casting the spell? This is relevant to Whether or...

@Someone_Evil Thank you! Then I think I have a question to ask
There's also one on spell scrolls which assumes they are counterable
Yeah I found that, think I'll open a question on Mystic Arcanum then
Which, hmmm... it might just be identical to the spell scroll actually
Yeah I think that and this effectively answer my question, thanks for the links!

I was writing an answer to this question and I now remember why I don't apply strict readings to UA material XD
