The targets. In part because a sympathetic portrayal of people who are marginalized and violently discriminated against, must also include helping us understand why marginalized people so often also discriminate against each other.
Not yet? But I kind of suspect that it's going to come down with a moral along the lines of "if we write off monstrous actions as simply the actions of monsters, we'll never fix anything."
One of her constant themes is that ANYONE can turn to monstrous actions, and pretending only monstrous people can do monstrous things is the first step toward becoming monstrous ourselves because we won't be watching our own behavior.
Oh, for non-fiction I'd recommend, in addition to Neither Wolf Nor Dog, try Hidden Figures. It was a great read.
I don't feel entirely generous towards people who would treat me badly due to my differences, and it doesn't really make it better just because there are other things they discriminate based on than the one that hits me in particular
@BESW ooh the NASA ladies who did most of the math and didn't get credit for it right?
@BESW I wasn't coming from that angle in particular but yes
I think there is definitely a limit to what I could forgive Even assuming I could still buy into that moral concept if I was the victim of something that bad
@trogdor The book covers more people than the movie did, in more detail and with a lot more nuance. The film does a bunch of typical Hollywood stuff like "squash decades into months" and "replace systemic racism with a few nasty individuals," and its scope is just too small to talk meaningfully about how massively influential the space race was on the black community's upward mobility.
@Ash tis fair, no need to subject yourself to something that seems like too much for you

Sometimes I like teh challenge of reading a hard thing but right now, I think it is mostly romance novels and fluff that I need more. Perhaps someday, tohugh
... Am I the only one who finds the "validate this pregen's spell list" questions a bit weird?
I mean, it seems the easiest part about that validation is counting spells; the more tedious part should be verifying the spells are all of the proper level/class.
@JoelHarmon I can assure you that you're not the only one who finds them weird. The reason I find the tools useful though (and why I've been making those posts) is that I tend to work with tools that very quickly lookup Spell Level/Class restrictions, but virtually none of my tools know how to validate "uhm, a level 10 Sorcerer can't have 5 5th level spells!"
It's also just a kind of unintuitive answer. If I'm trying to plan out a character, I want to be able to at-a-glance know what kind of power level I can give my character.
Also, for the midnight crowd: I created a google docs of the charts for each of the 8 "Memorized Spellcaster" classes that 5e features: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/…
I'll be using that as I make those posts later on, so if there's any mistakes in there, it might be good to call them out.
@Xirema The one thing I need is a method of listing off my spells for the Druid class. They (can) change daily so it's a matter of rubbing them out, then listing them down again. Could just put tape on the character sheet and a fine-tip pen, would make it easier
The other thing they need is a "Feats" section. They do have a couple on the character sheets, but for someone like me - I like to list down the descriptions as well (so we don't have to remember/refer to the rulebook each time)… and it fills up fact. Again can just use the back of the sheet... But I like to stick to the format haha
@trogdor The biggest credit for my good relationship with my parents goes to "being socially clumsy enough to not understand passive aggressive remarks before being mature enough to love them regardless" :)
It was quite the cultural shock when I met my SO's family for the first time. My parents always were about overt correctness, so pretty much everything flew if it was tactful in overt tone. Which often meant condescending passive aggressive remarks.
Her family otoh is all about correctness of intent. Chewing someone out with strong language is a sign of trust and affection as long as the reason is valid.
My biggest problem currently is actually my housemate. He berates his daughter for everything "You're doing it wrong... Go back and do it again, properly... What did I ask you to do... You didn't do what I asked..." almost constantly. HIs favourite word is "No."
I want to step in, but my issues is that I only see what goes on 2 hours in the day - 6-8pm
Probably not all that coincidental. They're from Pori which has a very industrial history like Cockneys and lots of maritime influences like Australia
I don't know enough about Irish or Scottish culture to comment on that, although I do recall hearing something about there being surprisingly many Irish sailors back in the age of sail
Not particularly. He says he's not always like that (I.e the rest of the day), and if it is just how it is at the end of the day, then fine I guess. Everyone's tired, bedtime all that.
@Ben There are certainly some days I've been happy just to get to the end of the day without swearing at the kids. (I've long since given up on the goal of not swearing around the kids.)
I feel like condemning the guy but I have never met him and have no way of knowing how true that is
I will say that even assuming full truth in that,... that's still not something I can condone,... constant no no no do that over do that over would suck to get from your parent all the time
if I was subject to that as a kid,... I don't know just how it would have changed who I have turned out to be
@Xirema I believe you. I just strongly tend to prefer books over online resources, to the point that my computer has a current stack of 11 manuals next to it which I use to answer questions rather than looking stuff up online. It's certainly my own bias, and I didn't intend to offend anyone based on their choice of tools.
@Ben Get three index cards and label them "offense", "defense", and "utility". Split your spells per level in half, and fill in that number on each card. Then simply have two of these out at a time. Round down for odd numbers, and use those single slots to customize your day to day.
@Xirema I find this a bit weird. If you've traded away all your level 1 slots, you can't use them to cast spells anymore (sorcerer and paladin have other uses for them). I suppose I don't typically see a given level down by more than one or two spells known.
I love the pseudo-hysics question about 12 daggers, 12 chains, and one lightning bolt. It reminds me of some of the hacks we tried back in the old days, just after electricity was invented. :)
@Rubiksmoose Kindasorta. It means that every creative spell question becomes it's own with a No, this isn't possible and here's a way to think about it.
I wouldn't be against reopening and answer if that's the community's preference. It's basically a copypasta with replacing some words (especially in this case)
but the upvotes on the comment suggest my dupe thought may be in community agreement
I had an idea, where a party of 6 total PCs each had 2 daggers with long metal chains affixed to them. They stick the daggers into a creature. They bundle up the chains and then had a lightning spell cast on them
Would the spells damage spread through each chain?
The idea is that for each d...
@NautArch Ah. I just dont think the stack is a great environment for that. Maybe I'm feeling less forgiving today but stuff like that I just want to say to the DM "Do you want to allow it? then do it. Otherwise don't. Obviously the game rules dont say you can do that"
which i guess is sort of what the linked dupe says in so many words
@SirCinnamon My issue is that for something to be marked as a dup, the questions need to be duplicates, not the answers. We have a whole mass of questions on the site that all have roughly the same answer - 'talk to your GM'. That doesn't mean that they should all be marked as dups of each other. If we go down that route, we'll end up with a smaller number of extremely generic catch-all answers, with no ability for questions to get specific advice on their individual circumstances
and that one actually is more of a general question, it ends with "Is there any rule for these situations? I want to reward creativity without unbalancing spells that are meant for single-target use."
so its ok to have a general question 'what do I do if I disagree with the GM' and the answer 'talk to the players and then the GM', and then every other specific situation someone asks about at the table that could have specific advice is a duplicate of it?
if its asking "what do I do if I disagree with the GM" and all the extraneous info doesnt actually impact the answer of "talk to the players and then the GM" then what would make it not a duplicate
Its the same as marking a question like "How do I handle sleight of hand checks" as a duplicate of "How do i handle skill checks"
@SirCinnamon To be clear, sometimes we don't know off the bat if something is going to be a duplicate until we've had a chance to ponder and maybe answer it. In cases like these they are often closed after some answer come in and determine that the gnome doesn't change the distance you can jump for example.
@DavidCoffron I disagree there are many instances of general questions being valid and helpful cases of "more specific" questions. It simply comes down to determining if the specifics of a question change the situation at all.
@DavidCoffron Sure, each case should be handled individually. There is nothing wrong with a very general Q&A that happens to cover other questions though.
I'm still unsure as to the dupe-listing but the community so far seems to agree with it. And the title of that question was about creative use. Subset questions do tend to get listed as dupes over general that answer it.
@Wibbs I think this is an issue we often have where Title question and body questions don't always jive. But even thought they had a specific example in their body, the end question was "Is there any rule for these situations? I want to reward creativity without unbalancing spells that are meant for single-target use."
And the Chain question therefore is a duplicate of question and answer.
@NautArch As the asker has not yet returned to engage again and clarify, at this point we just wait and see if they are enough to improve or change the question.
I think this is definitely meta-worthy of for no other reason than to start this discussion about general closures which there seems to be conflicting opinions on.

@NautArch I do not dispute your closure initiative; I think your judgment is good as it's more of a "forum" type discussion question than a stackable one. All creatures in a 5' x 100' line is an area of effect spell (or a line of effect if you are gridbound)
@Rubiksmoose i remember that ;) but that was also an attempt to MAKE a canonical umbrella question rather than one naturally occurring. not sure if that's actually a difference maker, though.
@NathanSantee Whatever your hands can hold, which is typically a heck of a lot less volume than using a container. Do you understand the difference between volume and weight? If you are carrying all 20 arrows with your hands, how do you hold, draw, and shoot the bow? Answer is You Don't. Therefore, you use containers to hold things that you will need, which frees your hands to do the things that you need to do. — KorvinStarmast29 mins ago
@KorvinStarmast answer is (in my world): you awkwardly squeeze the now-mussed bundle of arrows between your left bicep and ribs, hold the bow in left hand with arm only half-extended, nock and draw with your right, and get off a crappy half-strength shot.
Clearly =D
(Maybe quarter-strength shot--haven't done the math.)
@nitsua60 The encumbrance variant is somewhat at odds with the starting equipment set up (which fits well with the 15x strength basic rule) as we have discussed in TofA sessions.
I wonder if Nathan is a video gamer running into his first D&D experience.
@nitsua60 Or have a ranger who can forage food. That way, fewer additives in the food. (Have you seen the additives list in Lembas? 8^O I mean, what is q'slervill'gbushna habg'lutimadh anyway? )
@doppelgreener A while ago you mentioned using the Fate system to run a JoJo-esque game. Did that happen? And if so, what adjustments were needed for things like Stands, or characters being able to win by out-explaining each other?
@NautArch Ok, glad to hear that. Bill Murray must be proud. @Xirema Heh, I'll not comment further beyond "he was doing so well until he'd been in office for about a week ... " so it goes.
@MikeQ Alas, they did not wind up actually playing it through. IIRC they got into Blades in the Dark as an introductory game (BitD is a superb introductory game) and then things happened so they didn't wind up moving on to other stuff.
The weapon tag is not currently a synonym of the weapons tag. The tag synonym guidelines state that
If you know of common, alternate spellings or phrasings for [a] tag, add them here so we can automatically correct them in the future. For example, suggest “bike” as a synonym for bicycle, or “...
I just created hoard-of-the-dragon-queen and think it would be a very good idea to add a synonym hotdq, considering how common that abbreviation is. However, when I go to suggest it, I'm told I need 5 score in that tag before I can suggest synonyms. That's fine, but... do I not already have 5 sco...
"Users with more than 2500 reputation and a total answer score of 5 or more on the tag, can suggest tag synonyms. Users with a total answer score (total upvotes minus total downvotes) of 5 or more on the tag, can vote for tag synonyms. Suggestions will be automatically approved when they reach a score of 4, and automatically deleted when they reach a score of -2."
Could you clarify your actual problem here? You ask what you can hold without any containers or what's the point... but I think your question both illustrates what you can hold and what the point is, and it looks like you're fully aware of both of those things: "So you can hold all that sure but you can't do anything." So what problem is left over here? What's your difficulty or point of confusion? — doppelgreener ♦28 mins ago
if i don't have a backpack, quiver, chest, mount, or any container, how much stuff can I have assuming the weight limit isn't a problem? — Nathan Santee18 mins ago
their question is currently obviously already answering itself
they want to know a straightforward thing but their question is not asking that thing at all
@Axoren But their hypothetical situation includes it,. We can delete the explorer's pack from the equation or they can take everything out of the explorer's pack and discard the backpack.
we like to fix & help people but be mindful of where our energy is being spent and be mindful of the power of just letting someone work something out for themselves for a few hours
@NautArch still not sure if reopening without a clarifying edit is a good idea. Lots of weird stuff in the question that seems excess (the rhetorical questions for example)
@kviiri MGSV is a little bit better about only letting you have three weapons (plus upgrades for your hand) and they're all visible on your person. But Snake still packs a bunch of equipment who knows where (night goggles, several fulton devices, numerous cardboard boxes...)
@ravery In that case, you can still attack an enemy next to you.
IIRC, there's a rule in Pathfinder than you need to spend a move action or something to adjust your grip to attack something close with a reach weapon.
@Yuuki I think the "less is more" approach of later MGS titles regarding carrying weapons is rather nice. Especially with camouflage! I don't know who thought the MGS 3 style of camouflage was good idea, since it's both tedious AND unrealistic.
Like, usually one gets tedious stuff in video games because some game dev looks at a game and says "hey, wouldn't it be cool if <tedious thing> just like in real life?" and then does it because they didn't stop to think if they should
