It is good that they have a little time
I don't know why something like this doesn't allow for more than a few days though

Ben
Well they've got a few days to clear up the debt before legal proceedings commence.

I mean, getting kicked out of the place you stay is pretty hars

Ben
All in all it's about a month before everything gets processed completely

Yeah true

Ben
12:59 AM
New Topic: Standard AC and HP of a CR 1/4 monster
Using it for the Skelly minions

Oh, because they had minion in the name I thought they had 1 HP
Must just be my 4e experience

Ben
@trogdor I was thinking 5... but there's math involved in that... I mean... The average hit should deal around 5 damage anyway...
But I also want just general skellys in the rest of the dungeon...

This is for 5th edition right?

Ben
Yeh

I have no idea if it has any similar rules to 4e
4e just happened to have an opponent type called minions who always had 1 HP

Ben
1:07 AM
From experience, the player archetype rules are very different... not sure about monsters though

5 might not have that as far as I know

Ben
1:22 AM
Also: I need an idea for an enchantment on the Skeleton King's crown...
Something to do with the mind

Offensive, defensive, utility?

Ben
@BESW Probably utility, and probably aimed toward spell casters
Low level, so common/uncommon at most
"Headband of Intellect"? Boosts INT to 19...
But I want to put a curse on it too - it'll affect the player's "Corruption" level

What about a blink/teleport effect?
I dunno 5e balance, but something that gives you local super-mobility at the cost of corruption might be interesting.

Ben
@BESW Hmm... nah I don't think so.
Basically this crown is the "Crown of the Mad King"
Maybe "Helm of Telepathy"?
So, basically the whisper spell, or cantrip or whatever it is
So they can send whispers to other players, but they can hear other whispers when they wear it... and as their "Madness" increases, the whispers become clearer...
Message - not whisper

Ben
2:19 AM
I gave the Minions 5hp, though their AC is still 10+dex (2).
So they're not going to be completely demolished... I mean, the chance is high, but when they do get hit, they'll likely be demolished in one hit anyway. But the "Endless horde" rule for the Skelly King makes up for that

I found that 4e's rule for minions worked very well: give them the usual attack and defense numbers for a creature of the encounter's level, but only one hit point and a flat "average for level" damage amount (no dice rolling).

Ben
Yeah, fair enough.

This made them relephant to the fight but kept bookkeeping to a minimum and really let them fulfill their purpose (allowing PCs to feel awesome against vast numbers of enemies) effectively.

Ben
In that case, since the King can only revive minions when he deals damage, I was thinking of giving the minions hp = damage dealt (up to 5hp)
So, if he deals 3 damage to a PC, he can revive a skelly, with 3 hp

If you go with 1 hp minions, you can just have him resurrect a flat or rolled number of minions on hit.

Ben
2:28 AM
However, would it be fair to change that to "can revive 1 minion, per 2 pts damage, up to a total of 5"?

"Resurrect 3 minions when you deal at least 5 damage," or "Once per turn when you deal damage, resurrect 1d6 minions."

Ben
So if he deals 4 damage, that's 2 skellies

I try to minimize bookkeeping and maths during conflicts.
2
Calculating minions-per-damage-dealt is something I'd never want to do.

Ben
Lol fair
I don't want to overload that fight with minions, hence the cap
I like the "revive d6 minions"... but perhaps make it d3?

I've done something like "When you could take an opportunity attack, you can instead use the action to resurrect a minion within 5 squares of you."
If you want to be really mean, add "...and have it make an attack as a free action."

Ben
2:31 AM
Well, the way I did it was the resurrection was free, so long as he deals damage. So the action is free, but it requires a cost
That way the numbers are controlled to an extent

[grin] I really like messing with action economies, giving characters something cool to do on other peoples' turns.
Reactionary actions were a big part of what made 4e so tactically cool.

Ben
That also works well... Cos he has the ability to turn 5 minions into a set of armour. When he takes 5 or more damage in around, they are automatically transformed into 4 skelly minions instead

Cute.

Ben
But if he has 5 minions on the field, he can choose to turn them back into armour.
That's his "Lair" action, as I think @Nyoze suggested yesterday

Lair actions are cool.
Though, I tend to prefer environmental ones.
...now I'm thinking about Fate concepts for that kind of character.
> Shared Madness. When you take a consequence, you can spend a fate point to inflict stress equal to the consequence's value on everyone else in your zone.

3:00 AM
Apologies to @DaleM for having taking so long to accept his answer.
... blame my poor understanding of Shakespeare language for it :D

3:18 AM
hey there @Nyoze

Yo
Hi and bye sorry, back soon.
Quick question. For PF/3.5 If I'm using a Human-Bane weapon to Sunder an eneymy, do I get the bane bonus?

Hay.

hey there @JuneShores, how're things going?

[wave]
@JuneShores You're not familiar with Danger Patrol: Pocket Edition, by any chance?

I am vaguely familiar.

3:35 AM
I'm doing a light hack to make it a Thunderbirds Are Go game.

Oooh.

Seems to me like they share the same basic concept: a team of hyper-competent people with gadgets and personal skills, who have to solve a variety of simultaneous problems which, if left unaddressed, escalate and then resolve badly.
There's an element of strategic triage, a "but then there's a complication!" mechanic...
But the exact abilities are giving me a little trouble.
Right now I've got it divided into Tracy and Thunderbird instead of Style and Role:
- Tracy abilities are Courage, Precision, Protocol, and Innovation.
- Thunderbird abilities are Speed, Power, Durability, and Gadgets.
I'm not sure those are really the right choices though.

What is Tracy and what is Thunderbird, in this context?

So, in DPPE, you define your character by their Style (Alien, Ghost, Mystic) and their Role (Commando, Detective, Pilot).
Styles are associated with four abilities: Daring, Heart, Power, Weird. And they get a player-defined power, item, vehicle, weapon, etc.
Roles are associated with four other abilities: Action, Battle, Cunning, Science. And they also get a player-defined power.
For the Thunderbirds hack I'm changing it up to Tracy and Thunderbird. "Tracy" is the "who you are" part, the person on the mission. "Thunderbird" is the "what you're driving" part, the vehicle you're using on the mission.

@Ben Have you tried asking on law.se as a starting point? (I may have missed someone else suggesting this, as I noticed the star while skimming)

3:46 AM
In the show each of the Tracy boys has their own assigned Thunderbird vehicle that they use on almost every mission.

3:56 AM
@JoelHarmon I don't think anyone actually did this
Decent suggestion

@THiebert you're the fifth expression of interest; during December I'll try to get some conversations going about group availability, whether that time works, group composition, and we'll nail down a roster.

@trogdor Need legal advice? Ask semi-random internet strangers!
2

@JoelHarmon I mean, yeah there is that but maybe someone there has some knowledge on the subject
Though I do half expect "get a lawyer" as an answer
And that is good advice but it costs money
Which is part of the guys current problem as I understand it

@trogdor I meant that as half a joke. If you need legal advice, you should consult a lawyer. If you're not sure whether you need legal advice, asking a self-selected group of people interested in law isn't a terrible idea.

@trogdor my hope would be that "get a lawyer, and here are some ways near you to get low-cost/free legal services" comes in.

4:03 AM
@nitsua60 yes this would be a fantastic outcome

@JuneShores Basically, if you were to distill the modes of competency of the Tracy boys, and the modes of competency of the International Rescue vehicles, into four abilities each, what would they be?

@BESW they are all siblings right? What about at least one of these things being "the skill my parent taught me"?
Or even the value, or the life lesson or some such

That'd probably be the custom player-defined thing unique to each. The four abilities are the generic modes of competence they all share, but each in different proportions.

@BESW I have no idea, sorry. I have never seen Thunderbirds.

The abilities are the "how we solve problems" skills.
@JuneShores Fair enough.

4:13 AM
@BESW mk sorry, thought that was pretty clever myself but I guess you are right there

It's clever, I like it! It's just not fitting the needed pattern for abilities.
I'll suggest it as a subject for the Tracy bonus dice.

Yeah
This is hard because danger patrol specifically roots this stuff as weird powers
Plus I don't know what differentiates the Tracy kids from each other

My initial pass has the Tracy abilities as Courage, Precision, Protocol, and Innovation. And the Thunderbird vehicle abilities are Speed, Power, Durability, and Gadgets.

@nitsua60 Didn't you once answer a question with a chart of expected encounters between each level up for 5e? I'm having trouble digging that one up.

@JoelHarmon yeah... rummaging

4:24 AM
I also can't say for sure that it was even a question; it may have just been in chat.

A: What is the most reasonable conversion rate for a 5e "Gold for XP" house rule?

nitsua60Based off of DDAL1 modules... The Table: \begin{array}{l c l} \text{Total GP Expended} & \text{Level} & \text{(Expenditure for next level)} \\ \hline 0 & 1 & (700) \\ 700 & 2 & (1,000) \\ 1,700 & 3 & (1,350) \\ 3,050 & 4 & (1,850) \\ 4,900 & 5 & (2,500) \\ 7,400 & 6 & (3,500) \\ 10,900 & 7 & (4...

@nitsua60 I assume some "session 0" and "what do you want from the game" discussions as well? May weed out some incompatibles (which could include me, as I've never played with anyone here before), and it's good for direction anyways

yup

4:38 AM
@nitsua60 Not exactly what I was looking for, but close enough. Question posted!

@nitsua60 Huh. Not what I was expecting from the title. I was imagining XP for gold acquired (like in AD&D), not XP for gold spent

@Adeptus yeah, this is the old 0e-style "gp=xp" we were looking at

5:01 AM
Anyone around here ever played or run a game of call of catthulhu [sic]?

@HadesHerald Haven't played it, but read a bit of it.
I think MadMAxJr has played it, but they aren't pingable in chat.

5:18 AM
@nitsua60 So, if you had a big cross-edition mashup of rules, you could get XP for loot twice - once when you get it, and again when you spend it (though I daresay that isn't the worst problem this plan would have...)

Q: How can a Resident manage Eviction in Florida?

BenSo, my friend has recently been handed eviction papers. As far as I am aware, the only issue is a failure to pay rent - they have constantly had financial struggles coming up with the money, which is charged monthly. As it stands, they are 2 months owing. From what has been explained to me, and ...

I don't know if it's an option where you are, and possible not desirable, but here in Australia, we have the option to find someone else to take over a lease, so that we aren't charged with the breaking fee.
In addition, the Landlord must take reasonable steps to fill the property before claiming the break fee, and is only able to claim the fee for the period of time the property was unoccupied.

Ben
@Nyoze ...that's a possibility. I forgot about that
(Also, for reference - also an aussie :P)

@Adeptus Wait, so in an all-edition mashup... you can potentially get XP for discovering things, for finishing missions, for defeating enemies, for good roleplaying, for getting treasure, for spending treasure...

5:53 AM
That's right... Forgot you were local :)
There's a few of us here :D

6:05 AM
@BESW And have AC that both increases and decreases as it gets better...

Ben
6:41 AM
How heavy is the average 5e handaxe?

I'm going to say about... 3lb?
Handaxe 5 gp 1d6 slashing 2 lb. Light, thrown (range 20/60)
2lb :O

Ben
Ok... so now for science... what the maximum speed it could reach when falling from a height of about 20 ft?

So... Gravity is Approx 9.8 m/s/s

V.7
Hey all :)

Ben
@Nyoze so... ~30ft/s/s

V.7
6:44 AM
How is it possible to draw an object to 3D axis with saving objects position ?
I mean i.e. when some points of object are lower than Z axis then firstly draw lower part then Z axis and after that upper than Z axis points

Ben
@V.7 I fear you may be in the wrong room

V.7
I thought that this one for gaming purpose ?
So I though that graphics here're too
Btw roger

@Ben Sounds about right. So it would take less then 1 second to fall, but would reach a speed of less then 30ft/s

Ben
@V.7 Role-playing.

This is RPG, or Tabletop Role Playing Games, not for Game Design or Graphics sorry

Ben
6:47 AM
@Nyoze In that case, what would be the damage dealt to someone hit by that, vs a player with say, 16 str inflicting a direct blow?

Honestly? Negligible.

Ben
@Nyoze Negligible as in, the same?

Negligible as in, barely any damage, assuming it would hit.
Give me 2 minutes I'll grab some calculations
So, lets look at an Unarmed Strike, since I figured it was easier.
Scientists have calculated boxer's punching in an average of anywhere between 400-1000lbf.
By assuming a 2lb Handaxe, falling at a speed of exactly 9.8m/s, this would be equivelant to about 8 Newtons, or 1.7 lbf

Ben
@Nyoze Wow
I saw you posted an answer already, but mine is a bit more ridiculous haha

Yeah, that's all good :)
I only answered cause I want to hit 2k :O

Ben
6:59 AM
@Nyoze Ohh! So close!
I helped :P

Thanks! :D
Hey, I made it!
Finally! :D

Ben
@Nyoze Oh! It was my vote! Yaaaay!

Yay, more queues!
Huh...

Ben
Huh?

I don't like the edit privilege. I feel like some of my edits should still be reviewed :\
Like, this question
-1
Q: Messed up backstory. :(

Dynas XVSo, I decided to play a gnome in my new campaign but messed up when accounting for their aging difference. We just had our first session and I noticed that the human PC's were around the same age as me. Had a look and discovered that the age ratio for gnomes wasn't what I expected. Now that I kno...

I want to rewrite it and add more to it, but... I don't trust my ability to re-write it and not change it away from what the poster was wanting to ask :\

Ben
7:09 AM
@Nyoze Well, in that case, don't :)

Question gone anyway, but fair enough.

Ben
Honestly, he's said all he can, and without further confirmation from commenters, there's not much can be done anyway

Actually... To be fair, I was slightly off wih the calculations for that axe.

Ben
Oh?

It starts at 30f/s, then accelerates at a further 30f/s. So after 1s, say you threw it 30f for simplicity, it would be travelling at 60f/s
Which means it would be hitting with about 3.4lbf, not 1.7.

Ben
7:12 AM
Also: edits can be rolled back if they change the post too much, regardless of if they were reviewed or not.

Still... compared to someone throwing it at you, that's nothing.

Ben
@Nyoze Still not much more than a nasty knock either way

Exactly.
IRL enough to knock you out probably. In game? '/shrug

Ben
if it hit you in the right spot :p

Yeah, that's true

1 hour later…
8:23 AM
@Ben so I spoke to them about the situation, and long story short they don't really know much that can help
they mostly asked a lot why rent couldn't be paid and I had only a fuzzy idea of why that was

Ben
right
Basically just financial strain

and they didn't really seem to have an answer other than to pay the rent :/

Ben
But that's ok. Thanks anyway

I know that answer ain't very helpful but arguing with them about that wasn't gonna get me too far

Ben
Haha that's fair

8:59 AM
A'ight
I'm out
Cya folks

Ben
Cioa... Nyo..w?

Hmm ... the other day I saw a link to a PDF in some question that had a list of 16 types of fun described .. anyone know it?

9:34 AM
that sounds a little fammiliar?
different types of fun at least
I don't recall as many as 16 though

Ben

Hello, chatizens!

Hi!

Q: What is considered a "blade"?

VHSOur gaming group had an argument last week on what constituted a "blade" for magic item purposes in 5e. I argued that a glaive should be considered a blade and a polearm, as all a glaive really is is a shortsword or small scimitar blade on a stick. Another player argues that only things that "loo...

Does anyone know what magic item in DnD 5e differentiates weapons into blades and non-blades? I can't think of any.
I guess I'll just VtC it as unclear until I know.

11:51 AM
I seriously hope they didn't just homebrew an item that specifies it only works against/with blades and then complain DnD lacks a definition for blades...

12:16 PM
@Nyoze "local"? Don't you guys have an entire continent?

For most of its inhabitants, it's mostly edge.

@kviiri The question may have meant 'sword'. Other than that, I'd guess that a 'blade' could vary from a dagger to a claymore, and would basically be any weapon that does slashing damage.
@Erics Are you just looking for this link or were you asking for experience with it?

@JoelHarmon Yes, it was edited since.

Under the surface, it comes out as bubbles of noxious gas that wards off most predators.

The convention I'm going to next weekend has got a thematic block (well, just fancy phrase, not really a theme) on Sunday afternoon. Would someone be happy to workshop a Lovecraftesque scenario with me that would (maybe remotely) fit that phrase? The phrase is „das fünfte Rad“, literally “the fifth wheel”, but also part of the phrase we use for “the odd one out”.

Ooh, sounds fun.

Q: Is a user responsible for removing language he or she finds offensive?

Hey I Can ChanThis question at the time of this writing includes the following sentence: "She's also an only child, so she's used to getting her way." While still present in the popular imagination, only child stereotypes—like birth order stereotypes—are, in fact, stereotypes, dismissive at best and dangerous...

@Anaphory Are you German, or has that convention inexplicably decided the fifth wheel sounds cooler in German?
(Very few things sound cooler in German :/ )

I am German, and the convention is, in fact, held in Germany.

@Anaphory Oooh, which one is it? (I'm German, too)

9:28 PM
Rubicon Wintercon in Osnabrück (Niedersachsen), not a very big one.

So, theme: "the odd one out" and/or "the fifth wheel" (might be fun to take that literally somehow).
Also need a location/era, a Witness, a few other characters, up to five Cards, and about a dozen sample Clues.

Yes. I'm in favour of the literal one, with the connotation kept in mind; do it here or in some other room of ours?

Hi

[wave]

there appears to be a request to not spoil Thor here
does not compute
how does one not spoil something that spoiled itself?

huh
would you come to the UK for it?

11:07 PM
I've probably seen a lot of it already, because I've gone on pilgrimage to the Holy Land and been shown the Archives.

I see.

But for people who can't go on pilgrimage, it's a VERY rare opportunity.
And I mean, even for Bahá'ís, pilgrimage isn't just expensive and time-consuming, the waiting list is usually more than seven years long.

really?
how come you can't just go, like members of other religions with pilgrimage traditions?

Yeah. It's in Israel, so the Israeli government controls the visas for Bahá'ís entering the country.

Ben
[Obligatory self-introduction]

11:14 PM
do they not take kindly to Bahais?

[wave]

@Ben [acknowledgment through ping]

Ben
What a friendly bunch we are

@eimyr They like the Bahá'ís okay, but it's important to them to keep tabs on folks coming and going. I don't know all the details and reasonings.

Ben
Haha

11:16 PM
@BESW Welp, the Israelis do take their security and arrivals vetting extremely seriousl

Indeed.
And they don't give us trouble or anything. In fact, Bahá'ís get treated very well.
But yeah, if you're not a Bahá'í on pilgrimage, or a member of a National Spiritual Assembly attending the International Convention, the British Museum exhibit is one of the only opportunities I've ever heard of to see the actual original Writings of Bahá'u'lláh and some of His possessions.

Awesome.

The illuminated pages are awesome to behold, in the original sense of the word.

so, um
can I change the topic, if you don't mind?
I wanted to ask you about your online Fate GDocs and their structure etc.

Of course!

11:24 PM
is there a way for me to see it, if you have one handy?

[rummages]
Like, a character sheet?

more like scene etc.

Hmm. I don't really write up scenes very coherently.

Ben
On the topic of switching topics... I was thinking about the transition between levels of my Dungeon

Ben
11:27 PM
@BESW On that Topic - Okami is my favourite game ever

@BESW that's not the player-facing one, is it?

@eimyr It is.

So, um

I had the NPC stats on another sheet and copied them over when we encountered them.
(Or wrote them up on the fly, as needed.)

if, say, I create an aspect [On Fire], how do you indicate that?

11:30 PM
I write it next to the name of the character who's on fire, and put "(player name)" after it to indicate who has a free invoke on it.
@Ben Our long-running campaign using ARRPG mechanics was about members of an ancient organization, originally from Japan, called Amaterasu. They were dedicated to using magic and mad science to save humanity from magic and mad science.

ok, and if it's a situation aspect?

We just set aside a part of the document for that... [rummages]

AMAZING
that's exactly what I wanted to see
you don't seem to be using any fancy formatting or anything

Nah, no real need.
Carriage returns, tabs, and dashes are faster and easier for me to insert into the document.

/me reassured

11:40 PM
...also I usually write my pre-session notes in plain text.
We don't have a standard format that we've settled on, either.
We change from session to session, sometimes gradually and sometimes suddenly, based on what worked or didn't work previous and what's easiest in the current situation.
Like, way back in the day we'd write out "(1 free invoke -- Baker)." Now we usually just write "(Baker)" or "(2 Baker)" or "(Baker, Baker)."

that's really cookl
thank you for that

No problem.
Oh, and we track fate points physically.

I remember that!

Each of us has their own stack of fate points and we lift a token to the camera when we're moving it from one stack to another.
And as GM I try to keep representative stacks of the Skyping players' tokens also.
