@MichaelFrank Ah, okay. I don't have the system that I'll be installing the card in right now, but if it's a 2013 HP desktop then the card is likely to work?
If so, I'll go ahead and order it now
I know it has one PCI and one PCIe slot

That should be okay, I've done some weird stuff with old hardware ha

@MichaelFrank I'm asking because amazon India doesn't like hardware returns. I've had trouble returning an incompatible ram stick in the past, and the only reason I was even able to do so is because one of their employees slipped up and promised me a return over chat so I could hold them to it

This computer has an add-in graphics card, but the monitor is plugged into the integrated video connector.
To attach the monitor to the add-in graphics card:

1. Shut down the computer
2. Plug the monitor cable into the add-in graphics card connector. This may require a video adapter or video adapter cable. (provided with the system)
3. Turn on the computer.

This message should not appear after completing these steps.
^ Is this what you're seeing?

@bwDraco `what?

(yes, I do recall seeing this message over a decade ago when Father installed a graphics card into the now-retired Dell desktop)
Whoops. Was actually referring to this:
6 mins ago, by Michael Frank
Yea, it depends on the motherboard I think. I know what some Dell systems will disable the onboard when a dedicated graphics card is installed.
@MichaelFrank, out of curiosity, did you get this message before?

Q: Attention: Unsupported Video Configuration Detected

KevinI am working with a Dell Optiplex 390 tower running Windows 8. I connected it to a monitor via a VGA cable. The monitor also has a USB cable; I have the same problem whether I use the USB cable or not. (Unfortunately, the monitor doesn't have model number information on it anywhere, so I can't gi...

12:09 AM
Yea, that's the one.

Heh.

@MichaelFrank @JourneymanGeek Thanks, I'll go ahead and order it now
This is an amazing video

s/monitor is plugged/monitor cable is plugged/, but you get the idea.
I get the idea behind disabling the processor graphics when a discrete graphics card is installed, but wouldn't that break stuff like Intel Quick Sync Video?

@bwDraco I thought QSV was programmed to work even with the PCIe as your primary graphics adapter nowadays, but I might be wrong. Either way, that's a small price to pay to not have to mux the graphics from the dGPU to the IGP's framebuffer

12:42 AM
@bwDraco that works now, and has since IB

Huh.

There's also often a bios setting for running igp and discrete at once
7
Q: How do I run the integrated video adaptor alongside the GPU on an intel?

Journeyman GeekI've got an Asus P8Z77 motherboard with a core i7 3770 processor, and a Geforce 660 video card. I'm running Windows 8. While I primarily use the latter, there's situations where I want to use the HD4000 video adaptor built into the core processor - for example where I want to take advantage of ...

Aww.

@bwDraco There's literally nothing aww about Google.

Just the sun in the logo.

12:50 AM
An article from just yesterday washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/06/21/…

Say what you want, but the same position I had expressed on Matrix holds.

@bwDraco that corporations necessarily have to be evil because of the fucked up way in which the US system is set up and that as consumers we should just put up with it?
Give me a break
See, I never get this bit

I'm not risking a kick-mute or other mod action.

Why do middle-class people defend exteme capitalism in your country? It has messed up your healthcare system, your education system, created an opioid crisis, caused countless innocent deaths due to lack of gun control, provoked wars and you guys are still completely chill with it?
They say the key to understanding is empathy or something, but I literally cannot empathise with such sentiments
@bwDraco You won't be kick-muted if you're sensible and have a proper conversation like a grown-up.

Nov 30 '18 at 4:20, by bwDraco
I've long believed that when you put customers first, shareholder value will naturally follow. But most shareholders aren't interested in waiting several years for an investment in customer satisfaction to pay off. They want to see profits now, not at some unknown point in the future.
And this is why we have an insane class gap.

1:00 AM
@bwDraco it's also people are happy to consider this normal

@bwDraco That's not what I'm asking. I'm asking why do you defend such companies as a someone who doesn't stand to profit from their success?
This video highlights a very serious problem about how reporting is done in today's world.

Let me clarify: I was actually playing devil's advocate. I do not actually hold this position. But shareholders just won't accept the idea that customer satisfaction and loyalty can drive shareholder value without the need for unethical conduct.
Much of this is predicated on a misguided belief that better-performing businesses always produce more jobs. That's the fallacy Trump's been pushing.

@bwDraco yeah mate it shocks me just how many people believe lies in The Most Developed Country In The World (TM)

After all, no customers equals no business.
Yes, it's true that every dollar counts, and it pays for every individual to take their money seriously. But it doesn't mean we need to take extreme steps to control spending.
It doesn't mean that we need to run our lives like businesses.

1:54 AM
Wow.
Some really technical stuff in the video about stuff like thermal protection and the VRM. It's worth a watch.
🐈

@bwDraco I don't think the devil needs any advocates.

2:36 AM
relevant to the discussion, because Louis makes some salient points about how Apple is being responsible to shareholders even while not mining user data

@allquixotic and that's a fundamental selling point of apple
But apple's still a hardware/software/services company rather than social media/datamining
What bothers me though, is he idea that companies should do anything necessary to be profitable
The latest CAD comic seems relevant but I don't think that's SE friendly ;)
@rahuldottech I did say it was unsuitable for here ._.

2:52 AM
@Aibobot pshh ok

Also murder unscheduled amaetur surgery...
.... oh god. I did that joke first with the exploding egg at work...
I mean, unplanned spontanously dissassembly of a high energy fertilized poultry ovum...

Bob
@rahuldottech depends on the card. cards (used to?) have more outputs than total supported displays/resolution
look at card specs before buying

@Bob I can't find much info on the official site: gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N710D3-2GL#sp
Okay apparently it supports dual-monitor
that's good
See manual here (pdf)

3:09 AM
Removed some waste ink from the service station in my printer again.

Bob
@rahuldottech "multi-view 3"

@Bob yayyyyyyyy :)

@rahuldottech also... might want to check what the DVI output is (D or I) and what your monitors are

Stuffing damp paper towels into a small container inside the printer that's chock-full of old ink is no fun.

@Aibobot right now I only have one VGA monitor, I need to purchase two more

3:12 AM
Why? Because there's no replaceable waste ink container the way some other printers do, and waste ink accumulating in the service station will eventually overflow.

@rahuldottech heh, pity you arn't local
I know one of the local charity shops has a load of older 4:3 monitors ;p

@Aibobot A PITY INDEED
Do you know about nehru place?

nope

3:26 AM
@Aibobot big computer market in Delhi

Bob
@rahuldottech why VGA?
that card only has one VGA output

I'm going to go and ask around if they have second-hand or cheap chinese monitors in stock

Bob
the other two are DVI-D and HDMI
pure digital

@Bob Oh, I won't purchase VGA for the others if I can help it
VGA is still the most common and cheapest here tho

Bob
you'll want a monitor that takes HDMI and one that takes DVI-D
unless you want to faff about with adapters
DVI-D and HDMI are the same signal over different connectors
neither of which go to VGA without $$

3:28 AM
@Bob ah, TIL
@Bob I already have one HDMI to VGA dongle that I've used in the past

Bob
DVI-A/VGA are the same signal
DVI-I takes both -D and -A
@rahuldottech they tend to be relatively pricey and generally unreliable, especially at higher resolutions or refresh rates
I've seen some that can only manage 30 Hz reliably
easier to just get a monitor that takes digital, IMO
as long as you're not stepping back to CRT age, most all LCD panels take some form of digital input
(and HDMI => DVI-D is easy)
oh, also, be careful of old screens
they tend to ... die
the CFFL backlight ony lasts so long

> Dual-link DVI-D*1 / HDMI*1 / D-Sub*1

Bob
D-Sub == VGA

@Bob yeah, I figured
Okay so I'll try and find an HDMI display

Nope

@Bob - Its rahul though. He's probably going to just replace it with LEDs....

Bob
3:32 AM
@rahuldottech if you're going for old/cheap, you'll probably find more DVI-D than HDMI

Bob
HDMI is more common on TVs, not monitors

@rahuldottech at a pinch, sometimes TVs can be a good deal too for HDMI

Bob
you don't want to use a TV, especially an old TV, if you can avoid it

@Bob I doubt it. I've never seen a DVI port on a display in India

Bob
3:32 AM
they tend to be horrible res
@rahuldottech you ... what?

@Bob I'm not kidding. Only seen it on the backs of a couple projectors

Bob
they were on literally every monitor from ~2006 through 2015
only displaced by DP

@Bob I have also never seen DP on a display here. Although keep in mind I don't interact with high-grade stuff

Bob
DP is still new-ish

@Bob The HP display I currently have was purchased in '13. Mid-range. Only VGA.

Bob
3:34 AM
but DVI-D is ... everywhere

I think HDMI is the standard on cheap stuff

Bob
sometimes DVI-I

@Bob PCs in india are odd
they literally jumped from e-waste grade junkers with CRTs to modern stuff that's at least a decade newer...

Bob
o_O

@bob what I have right now: store.hp.com/in-en/default/…

Bob
3:37 AM
the last VGA-only LCD panel I saw was some old DiamondView (do they even make monitors anymore?) ~19" from ... I don't even know when

I don't think I've owned one past my CRTs

Bob
I had a couple post-CRT

oh my dad's second hand ones. I don't even remember what off brand they were

Bob
one of which my brother refused to upgrade off until ... 2015?
then I used it on a miniserver for a couple years

sounds about right.

Bob
3:39 AM
@rahuldottech See, the weird thing is I'm almost certain it costs more to add an ADC

This I think is my first build without parts slowly dying.

Bob
funny thing is I couldn't use it with the Pi

PI is composite no?

Bob
yea
didn't have anadapter handy

@Aibobot composite + HDMI

Bob
3:41 AM
was easier to just plug the HDMI into a monitor I temporarily stole off a different pc

@rahuldottech HDMI is literally ubiquitious now

Bob
ran it headless for a few years after that, before replacing with the ER-X

@Bob heh, one reason I love the crossover. Recent mysterious display issues aside...
one DP. Three HDMI 2.0 (which wasn't even listed) and a VGA port (1080P only)

Bob
@Aibobot VGA on a >1080 screen is so weird

@Bob until you need to test some odd legacy thing

Bob
3:44 AM
@Aibobot that's what the monitor closet is for!

wtf are these amazon.in/…

@rahuldottech oh those cheapie chinese projectors....
FULL HD is a lie though. Likely 640x480 or 600x800

Bob
> The projector is 1280 x 800 resolution, it can support 1080P video.
lmao
I don't think much even runs on 600 high anymore, let alone 480
I tried on Win7 on a 576 high display ... dialogs kept getting pushed off the bottom
it's fun trying to click "save" when it's outside your screen area and you can't move the top up anymore

If I can't find anything in Nehru Place, I'll probably go for this
I like this Dell one, but it's kinda too expensive for me

3:49 AM
Dells are actually nice.

Bob
though low-res screens probably make a great console display
high-res/high-dpi are ... poor for that
/me squints at tiny text

@Aibobot very similar to what I use for my raspi
See images on riot

Bob
@rahuldottech that looks decent though you'll probably need to run on 125-150%

@bwDraco nothing screams legit like putting "legit" in your website's domain

@Bob thats reasonably close to how I used it

This guy is banned from running any sort of debt relief business.

@Bob okay by me :)

(and eh, I currently have 2 spare NUCs .... I probably should be trying to get my old seedbox/autodowloader setup back up)

I know this will possibly really reduce the quality
But what if I get a TV with a decent res from Chandhi Chowk (another marketplace for such stuff), and use this?

3:57 AM
you might not need the converter

ok no that's a terrible idea
@Aibobot if I get a TV with HDMI, yeah

and heh
I sometimes connect my laptop to our TV over vga

@Bob btw that Dell display I linked above? VGA-only

Bob
.
@rahuldottech the other thing to be aware of with TVs is refresh rate/input lag/ghosting
not a huuuuuuuge issue outside of gaming
and a non-issue if text-only

@Bob yeah. I'm thinking I'll carry my raspi to the store and do some testing

Bob
3:59 AM
but if you're doing graphical things on it you'll probably notice a cursor trail

@Bob yeah that's probably not ideal, even though it will mostly be used for text

@rahuldottech well - in your situation (admittedly a little older) - sometimes 'good enough' is good enough

True

And then you can upgrade. Granted, dumpster diving opportunities here are a lot better, if not EEV blog Dave grade

@Aibobot I AM SO JEALOUS OF COUNTRIES THAT HAVE GARAGE SALES

4:04 AM
@rahuldottech uhm
I mean, more like stuff people throw out
Someone very neatly stripped down the last desktop I saw though
was literally just a case
GRANTED, I don't really dumpster dive any more.

@Aibobot dude people here don't like to throw stuff out. Ever.

@rahuldottech well, you've not yet hit post scarcity yet.

And when they do, they'll sell it to the same dude who they sell old newspapers and scrap to for like 500 buck
It's painful.

@rahuldottech bit of a unique thing here is since we live in apartment blocks, there's an odd convention for things like that
you leave it at a designated spot on the ground floor
If its DANGEROUS - you cut the lead
but folks sometimes salvage furniture (my neitbours parents do that ;p)
And I picked up a core 2 duo aboooout 5 years ago and ran it till I got my ivy bridge

@Aibobot that's so cool man!
Okay so I gotta leave for the Reddit meet now
See ya
Thanks for all the advice and help @jou @bob

4:11 AM
@rahuldottech being able to afford new hardware is cooler ;p
Dumpster diving and fixing is great for troubleshooting and triage skills. But you're still fixing up trash

@Aibobot I know. That's fun for me tho :)

Oh, would totally do that, and give them away if I had the time/dumpsterives/space

@Aibobot they are!

6:23 AM

Say what are those $5 activation keys for Windows 10 sold online?

6:59 AM
could be fake or stolen

Or excess from OEMs

What happens to Windows 10 on a PC it was stolen from? It stops working?

Unless you're getting a legit license you might as well not activate
@Boris_yo stolen from OEMs or institutes. Not from computers

It was likely never used
they used MAK or KMS instead

8:37 AM
@Aibobot FWIW we clung onto a Windows 95-era Panasonic CRT for over a decade before we got rid of it...

1 hour later…
9:58 AM
@bwDraco I threw out my last one cause it was spitting sparks out the VGA connector
which I felt was an unacceptable method of operation

12:17 PM
So everyone from the Reddit meetup ended up coming to my place
Got beers and stuff
Fun stuff

Good idea to buy 1070 TI online used?

1:43 PM
Everyone just left. It was lots of fun.

@Aibobot some people would consider that a feature

2:41 PM
@Bob depends on who you want to kill

someone should write a better one but I'm going to bed ;p
stackoverflow.com/questions/18352682/… seems a sensible starting point

@djsmiley2k Yes, it feels nice! I have my switches, APs, Printers (although I don't care much for them), as well as Linux and Windows servers monitored, and their services

5:11 PM
hello, soft question, does it make a difference, performance wise, that I install games on a different partition than that of windows?
i'm thinking that since it is a partition where is most of the time asleep, i.e it's just for storage, perhaps the pc will do more effort to load it?

5:28 PM
Partition or drive?

@CanadianLuke Sooooooo I derped at work

@Luyw the only difference in performance you'd see is if you put your games on a drive that is capable of higher throughput or higher IOPS than another... putting them on a different partition on the same drive is pointless

seems I knocked most of the customers storage offline, the joys of not very well thought out change controls eh?
the most.... outstanding outcome of all this though? Our monitoring doesn't even alert when a mount point switches to ro.

although if you have two identical hard drives with the same performance, you might get a very slightly faster perf by puttinng games on the second HDD, because your system wouldn't be sharing IOPS with the game

^^ i.e. 'it's more complicated than that'

5:31 PM
@allquixotic Storage contention.

different controllers? I happen to have 2 hdd controllers on my board for lols

@djsmiley2k spreading out workload among controllers won't make a difference unless you're somehow saturating the controller, but only something like Optane (which is PCIe) or an enterprise-grade SSD, or a lot of SSDs, or a metric ton of HDDs, could saturate a controller
NVMe isn't capable of being saturated IIRC because each drive gets its own lanes; SATA can be saturated but you need a lot of fast SSDs to have it happen

fair enuf

@djsmiley2k Depends on the underlying link. On most machines, the main SATA controller is part of the chipset, which is connected to the processor via a PCIe 3.0 x4 or similar link (e.g. Direct Media Interface). This link allows for for 4 GB/s of bandwidth on most modern systems, and is shared with a number of devices, including USB and sometimes the network adapter. It's unlikely you'll saturate this bus with a small number of SATA disks.
If you have a separate SATA HBA or RAID card, that communicates with the processor via dedicated PCIe lanes as long as it's actually connected this way (if it's on the chipset lanes, it would share bandwidth on the chipset bus with the aforementioned devices).
Indeed, this is why high-end desktop platforms and servers support so many PCIe lanes: because servers and workstations often need lots of I/O, graphics card, and other add-on devices.
A handful of electromechanical hard drives is not going to saturate the chipset bus.

5:55 PM
It's my SU 5th birthday ;)

Now, with the advent of high-speed solid-state storage and USB interfaces, there are more situations where you could wind up saturating the chipset bus (e.g. four SATA SSDs and two USB 3.1 Gen 2 devices all operating at full bandwidth is enough to saturate a modern 4 GB/s chipset bus), it's still not a common situation outside of workstations.
I should note that the chipset bus on an AMD X570 board equipped with a Ryzen 3000 processor has 8 GB/s of bandwidth because it's PCIe 4.0 x4...
@Luyw You need a separate disk for best performance. A separate partition won't help as it's sharing storage bandwidth with the system volume.

6:21 PM
@JourneymanGeek partition
@allquixotic thank you!
@bwDraco I see, thanks ^^

@djsmiley2k I've been balls-deep in Nagios for the past month. Essentially, you need to find a command that will output whether the partition is read only or read-write, then Nagios (at least) can alert you of that change

yeah, this isn't nagios tho
that's what I mean, in nagios that kinda check is easy
but, sigh 'enterprise'
