Ave
Ave
it may not be
but I did fsck and it was VERY angry

on ro or rw
@Burgi @Bob plz join if you can, just ping me
dude i don't have time for that
i'm in work

@rahuldottech I'm gonna sleep. Maybe tomorrow if I have time but I'll likely be busy.
@Burgi ditto

@Ave c'mon, ddrescue first! :P
Ave
Ave
too late
@rahuldottech there doesn't seem to be an add to team option once you register.
Bob
Bob
@Ave You probably already know, but just in case... ddrescue to image => copy the image => testdisk the copy
Ave
Ave
I wouldn't be able to do that
I don't have any drives big enough to store an image
@all @bob @bur okay then. Ping me if you're free and/or bored. It runs for exactly 12 hours from now
Ave
Ave
15:11
and I can't even buy a new drive I'm too broke
the services are hosted off the boot drives rn
@rahuldottech ping
@Ave try fiverr.com

I'd rather starve
I'm okay with regular employment stuffs, but contract work or shit like fiverr isn't for me
15:18
@Ave i'm not ok with that.

speaking of
I applied to some jobs, no calls yet

what was it again
thisisfine
ah yes. when you say "this is fine" it posts that
It setting Set-Cookie: header supported on a 302 Found response?
dude, i'm 21. I've been applying for jobs since I was 13.... I have not gotten a single call :D in all that time.
hi all
Ave
Ave
hi
15:19
weekend came early
hello humourous-dinosaurus
Ave
Ave
@Nick sounds like a good reason to not become even more of a product
@Ave If I were a product, I'd be a tool.
Ave
Ave
because products don't get respect or loyalty like humans (sometimes) do.
I don't want to be yelled at by 9yo kids with rich parents because I didn't make them the perfect roblox mod for $5
I'll leave exurb1a to figure your jumble-umble out.
@Ave oh, that was you, was it!? Hey, fix JJSploit asap, you evolved monkey.
Ave
Ave
15:22
we actually got ddosed through roblox exploits
wasn't a fun day.
#legionofnineyearolds #pewds
@Ave there was an update today. now character torsos go full 180.
jailbreak is more like fortnite/gta now
Ave
Ave
I don't play roblox and I've no idea what you're talking about
neither do i... but it's all my brother (who has birthday today) ever does.
Ave
Ave
happy bday to him
we actually ordered a 3d printed cake with his youtube a/c logo on it
but because of the statewide flooding due to rain, we couldn't pick it up.
So, we settled for a local cake from the cakeshop.
Ave
Ave
15:29
I want a 3d printer
I made a dumb switch payload injector today
so that I can hack it on the go
you know that you do it right when you put a battery twice the size of the board
(I was going to go with a coin cell battery but it was unstable)
(as the one I chose was 3.0V and board was 3.3V)
(the battery is 3.7V and it runs fine now)
@Ave you can build one. final yr students at my college do that as a project every single year.
Ave
Ave
dude I can't afford a single hdd
how do you expect me to get the parts
uh, contract work xD
Ave
Ave
you're doing this on purpose aren't you
uh, I have no idea how adults make money.
My only plan right now is a BTC trading bot that utilizes sentiment analysis from the top 500 crypto-leaders.
and coinbase isn't available in my region :/
Ave
Ave
15:37
coinbase sucks
someone donated me $20 in btc today
idk. xapo's nice.
@Ave happens
i use wallet.btc.com ... i think
they say they're the best.. but I guess everyone says that.
Ave

bitcoin sucks
but there was recent dip and spike
Ave
Ave
15:39
can't even make money off it anymore
didn't you profit from that?
Ave
Ave
LOL
no I pulled out at like 20k
I mean it only got me like $2
but still
@Nick they work.
Ave
Ave
what if they can't find jobs
i guess then they don't work 🤔 makes sense, really
@djsmiley2k self-employment doesn't give steady pay, apparently.
@Ave I think that's what is meant by unemployment. I remember having to learn about that in highschool economics.
There are people whose job it is to collect the numbers on unemployment rates.
I wonder who pays for those folk.
15:43
@Ave you take whatever you need to do, to survive
or you don't survive

@Ave Not sure anyone likes it?
They either don't, or are too stupid to realise they don't.
i don't know what I got

@djsmiley2k see I found this one perfect job
I applied

This job I got?
Ave
Ave
I was more than qualified /shrug
They turned me down for another role.
Phoned me randomly while I was working as a contractor and hating everything.
Offered me interview
got job, and now 1yr and 10~months later
@Ave I love when I'm talking with a coworker or a client and they are using this really old, really obscure, really expensive commercial software on Windows to do something basically industry standard, like FTP or SSH or hex editing
I've got promoted, with a nice payrise
15:49
because that's what their company licensed as "approved software"
That I didn't even expect.
Ave
Ave
@allquixotic sounds fun
I like linux.
I usually go for XVI32 for hex editing on Windows
Bob
Bob
How?!
they must hate firefox
hey, what does nc <ip> <port> mean?
Bob

15:55
@BenN I use Frhed cause it's the portableapps one :P
does nc mean netcat?
mhh.. hope winbash has it.
Bob

tf is winbash
exactly what you think it is.
Dibs on the name tho
Bob

15:56
eww.
neat. I have nc from the netcat-openbsd package. An alternative nc is available in the netcat-traditional package.
Ave
Ave
consider msys2
I know that a bunch of people on switch hacking scene use it
(probably because dkp uses pacman but anyways)
Ave
Ave
also consider installing linux
btw i use arch
Bob
Bob
=> WSL beats all (except maybe full linux, depending what you're going for)
16:02
i am weasel .. and i r baboon
Bob
Bob
msys is okay (and better than cygwin at any rate) but still patchy and buggy
@Bob argh, me insect.
Ave
Ave
yeah, use actual linux if you can
Bob
Bob
16:03
@Ave WSL is about as close as you'll get to a full linux environment without faffing about with VMs or multiboot, though.
@Ave is ubuntu actual linux. Sometime I feel it's not linuxy enough. I know Android isn't actual linux. It's only the kernel.
Bob
Bob
msys2 is the fallback if you can't (or are not allowed to?) install system-wide features
Ave
Ave
let's go by gnu/linux
because that's more objective to judge about
Bob
Bob
> they refused to stop despite several calls to the police
I need to buy an HDD and I'm considering a ST4000DM004, is there any incident with this model breaking more than expected? Or should I avoid Seagate?
Bob
Bob
16:04
erm
did anyone walk up and ask/tell them to stop?
HAMMERTIME!
Ave
Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy consider this
Bob
Bob
or did they just call police?
@Bob one of em must've been dying or sumthin
Ave
Ave
I lost hundreds of gigs of data today
Bob
Bob
16:04
like, calling police won't magically do anything
Ave
Ave
spent hours just rewriting a small portion
because a drive died
Bob
Bob
now, if they had refused to stop after police arrived, that'd be a different matter
Ave
Ave
and the drive was you guessed it seagate.
don't do seagate, kids.
2
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Buy two HDDs and use the extra one for backups.
Ave
Ave
16:05
or else it'll make you take drugs!
Bob
Bob
2x Seagate >>>>>>> 1x WD/HGST/whatever
Ave
Ave
(well performance increasing drugs to restore progress)
@Ave I had the same issue when my laptop died. Then, I got this one and the deja vu is phenomenal. Like I've literally done EXACTLY the same stuff I did on the last.
@Bob its a tabloid, you are left to make up the rest of the story in your head
Bob
Bob
Because trying to make any decisions off a wishy-washy average failure rate is a fool's errand
Ave
Ave
16:06
@Bob I'd say that it's not worth it even at that
my drive that died had like uh
4000 uptime hours or smth
Bob
Bob
@Ave I've had WD drives fail. I've had Seagate drives fail.
Ave
Ave
2388 hours actually
well yes, all drives die eventually
but just 2388 hours of power on hours is unacceptable.
@Bob I really, really want to, but this 4 TB ranges from USD 122 to USD 160. Min wage is USD 250. A 8 TB HDD takes a good chunk ofmy salary, two 4 TBs take a bit more.
Ave
Ave
not saying that it'll happen to everyone, but the fact that it happens in first place is bad.
Bob
Bob
@Ave And there will be outliers everywhere.
16:08
but it'll probably happen to everyone eventually
I plan to have 2 HDDs and do a daily rsync
But there's this money thing ...
Bob
Bob
The average only matters if you're buying thousands of drives and want to optimise for cost. And even then maybe higher failure rate for cheaper drives is acceptable.
@ThatBrazilianGuy I plan to do that on my brain
@Bob heavy discount if you buy a unit from a guy who does that sort of bulk purchase.
I need to migrate a large quantity of data from CDs and DVDs to HDD. If I buy two HDDs my bank account will be depleted :(
I might buy one this month and one the next. Then automate rsync.
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy 2x 2 TB?
@ThatBrazilianGuy Then keep the CDs/DVDs as your backup, at least for now.
16:12
Might not be enough. I want to throw away a whole cabinet worth of CDs and DVDs I burned since I was younger than @Ave
There are... A lot of them.
Some are really degrading
Morning all
Is that the word? They're falling apart.
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy ...the other interpretation is that there's "degrading" content on there. Read: embarassing (perhaps sexually)
Oh no, it's mostly old backups of backups of
Bob
Bob
Ambiguous English! :P
I think it's the "really" that makes it read that way
maybe "heavily". Maybe swap it around, so "degrading heavily"
16:17
Too old to edit
!!xkcd 1360
@CanadianLuke Hey Luke! How's been vacations?
Mine ends next Monday :(
@ChatBotJohnCavil reminds me, I need to crack fences v3
@ThatBrazilianGuy It was awesome! Much needed break, stayed out on the water
I've been back for a week now
Fought with my ISP's new modem/router monster last night, drove me insane... Hense, the star...
I think I need to switch the modem/router to bridge mode and run my own network... Even SSH is taking forever
@CanadianLuke pfSense is the way to go!
Bob
Bob
16:25
@Ave Actually, at 100 days, I think you just got bathtubbed :P
I use mine to even login PPPoE and bypass the modem.
Ave
Ave
@Bob huh?
I need something... But I'll need to buy a new router anyways, since I don't have any other access points around
Bob
Bob
The bathtub curve is widely used in reliability engineering. It describes a particular form of the hazard function which comprises three parts: The first part is a decreasing failure rate, known as early failures. The second part is a constant failure rate, known as random failures. The third part is an increasing failure rate, known as wear-out failures. The name is derived from the cross-sectional shape of a bathtub: steep sides and a flat bottom. The bathtub curve is generated by mapping the rate of early "infant mortality" failures when first introduced, the rate of random failures with constant...
Plus I just got upgraded from 150 Mbps to 300 with this new modem...
Bob
Bob
16:28
@CanadianLuke Consumer router => custom firmware on consumer router => enterprise-y router (ubiquiti/mikrotik) => custom router (e.g. pfsense running on custom hardware)
that's the progression :D
So if I drop down below that, I'd get pissy
I can run pfSense in a VM too, right?
Bob
Bob
right side is more customisable and more fiddly, left side is simpler but limited to standard consumer use cases
@CanadianLuke ...not recommended
Bob
Bob
you'd need to keep it up 24/7 or you lose connectivity
you'd also need to bond a physical NIC with it
you could bridge a virtual NIC, but that's ... not very efficient
Well, wtih a VM, I could also transfer it between my two Linux servers if I need to take one down for maitenance
Bob
Bob
16:32
...I'm not sure migrating core network appliances is a great idea
I'll probably just get a new router, and see if I can flash it
Good to know. I never tried
Bob
Bob
@CanadianLuke if you want custom firmware, do your research before buying
then buy one you can definitely flash with what you want
@CanadianLuke it might work? idk. sounds like a pain.
Ave
Ave
does anyone know any routers with vdsl and ddwrt/openwrt support?
Bob
Bob
I pretty much followed that ^ progression and stopped at enterprise-y routers (ubiquiti) after a few years on custom firmware (dd-wrt). don't see much value in going to pfsense with the additional fiddliness. YMMV.
@Ave I think the traditional solution has been to have the vdsl bit in a physically separate modem :P
and just bridge it with the auth happening on the (custom) router
Is Ubiquiti good?
Bob
Bob
16:35
For my use case? yea
Ave
Ave
I heard good things
Bob
Bob
really depends what you want and your budget, though
and what you already have
@Bob you forgot the (usually terribly) customized ISP-provided router, as the worst option possible.
Bob
Bob
e.g. if you go pfsense you need an external switch and probably external WAPs
if you go ubiquiti you'd need to buy the WAPs separate to the router
consumer routers are more integrated
the separation works really well for me because I have two WAPs at opposite ends of the house, that cooperate beautifully
If I had my way, I'd have server-grade hardware for my main server, and run DHCP and DNS from there at least
16:38
I have a mini ITX PC with two built-in NICs that I use as a pfSense powered router.
I use an external AP.
Bob
Bob
yea, wi-fi is annoying/complex enough with dedicated hardware
My current server is a mini ITX, but with an AMD E350 CPU
Bob
Bob
no need to try merging it with other shit
Last night I tried to use a WiFi stick to have it be the AP itself but FreeBSD firmware support is less than Linux
And vendor firmware is a lottery
Same model could be 2 or 3 firmwares... Support changes between revisions...
Bob
Bob
@CanadianLuke Yea uh. That's ... gonna suck.
16:40
How lovely... Money is tight right now, until October
Bob
Bob
I feel like that won't even do 300Mbps
It might not even manage 150Mbps with NAT
considering you're doing VMs, presumably running other stuff, ...
@CanadianLuke Grab a real cheap TP-Link router.
Costs like $25, should tide you over.
Current speed test, my home server is pulling 72.11 Mbit/s
Bob
Bob
If you were going Ubiquiti, the basic ER-X router runs about 50 USD, add a switch (if you need >5 ports including WAN) (15 USD unmanaged?), add a WAP (if Unifi, from 60 USD to 300+USD depending on model/speeds/etc.)
@ThatBrazilianGuy Or if you want to archive your CDs you can upload them (or a backup copy of them) to C14 => online.net/en/c14
2 TB costs 10 EUR/month on the intensive level (free up/down operations)
2 TB costs 4 EUR/month on the standard level (one-off 20 EUR to upload/store, free to download/retrieve)
Yea, my SSH keeps kicking out when connecting home
16:55
@Bob I have infinite gDrive space. But very finite bandwidth...
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy oh, yes, the old reason :P
(which is why I have a pile of 8TB HDDs...)
17:14
@ThatBrazilianGuy Hey man. I missed you. Haven't seen you in a while.
I really hope that's because you've been having fun in life rather than being busy or in bad times
if the trilogy site meme holds, then you have been gone because you haven't been at work :D
@allquixotic Awwnnn Aruku-senpai loves me!
@allquixotic Bit of this, bit of that.
looks like I missed a lot of scrollback during my meeting
Had an amazing trip of 4 days, then a huge backlog of stuff I had postponed for "whenever I had the tine".
wow! congrats! that sounds ... so unstressful (the first half of that anyway)
I hope that's more than counterbalance for the huge backlog
Including multiple very late doctor consultations with multiple medical specialities, a new glasses prescription which was a few years late.
@allquixotic The trip was amazing -- and surprisingly comparatively cheap!
So turns out there's this small beach town 3:30 bus hours away from Rio
Where the view is amazing and the water is greenish blue or crystal clear
@allquixotic "video not available".
Anyway, I have nearly a dozen medical exams scheduled.
@ThatBrazilianGuy aww D:
VPN to the US :P
Hopefully I'll find out what's wrong and why the hell I am so wrecked all the time.
@ThatBrazilianGuy holy...... wo... what
@ThatBrazilianGuy what do you suspect is wrong? :S like, what are the symptoms? (not going to play doctor, just concerned)
@allquixotic The music ends with "Olé".
Classic Brazilian Spanish!
17:31
LOL
@ThatBrazilianGuy I noticed that, and figured it was a horrible, horrible cultural faux pas
intentional or not, you'd have to ask Mel Brooks
@allquixotic There's a whole documentary about foreigner's expectations of Rio (and Brazil).
Let me see if I can find it...
there must be at least some truth to Rio being a beautiful place, if you can just travel 3 hours and 30 minutes and find a place that is truly worth vacationing at, with beautiful water... because around where I live, the only way I can get someplace pretty in that time, is by getting on an airplane
@allquixotic Well it's a neighboring city and 3hs of a highway drive.
so not Rio proper?
No. 140km (82mi).
17:35
aah
are there still good scenic places to go within the Rio city limits or nah?
@allquixotic Arraial do Cabo, that's the place.
oh, that looks like paradise...
there's something inviting about that color of water
@allquixotic Yes, lots and lots. So many that you'd need a whole week or more just to visit them all, and that's without considering cultural or historical places etc.
@allquixotic IKR? I was almost sad when I had to go back.
land a remote work job with Google-US making US wage and you can get satellite or LTE internet and live on that beach lol
or on a waterfront property and have permanent access to the beach
just have to find a laptop that's IP67 so it doesn't get sandy
@allquixotic Oh, nothing alarming or seriously wrong (as in hospital-worthy). I just have a lot of routine checkup exams that I haven't done in years =/
I was a long time without a health plan.
17:41
oh... ok...
Oh wanna hear a "funny" thing, specially as a North American?
sure
I'm interested to hear how Canada plays into what you're about to tell me :P
cc @FU...SKLuke
So I pay $ 100 as part of my dad's health plan. It covers a lot of different medical professions and also exams, but not hospital stays or the like.
100 US? 100 reais? per month or year?
So I was feeling a bit of back pain, nothing serious. I went to this clinic and the consultation was BRL 40 (saw the health plan slip) and they x rayed me there and then, and it was like BRL 55 and the doctor examined the results and prescribed some light medication and it was all done in less than USD 25 (of which I paid exactly zero).
@allquixotic Per month.
Oh and AFAIK there's no limit on doctor appointments or exams.
17:46
yeah... 25 US for all that... our doctors want $200 to shake your hand
my dad had acute (short term, very short term) hospital stay due to kidney failure. He recovered in like 2 days. $25,000 US, of which insurance ate most, but very grudgingly and only after appeals etc
and we still ended up paying thousands
Well the x-ray machine seriously looked like it was from the 70's but it worked.
If I had to use an ambulance or stay in a hospital, have a surgery etc, my plan covers nothing on those
my doctor's handshakes are 2018 model, with advanced patient courtesy technology, so they cost $200
I would rather have a 1970's basic handshake for 25 US though
Worst inconvenience is sometimes there's like only 4 or 5 clinics in the neighborhood and they only have schedules for the next month so I have to check for clinics on other neighborhoods.
@allquixotic LOL
@allquixotic It... doesn't. What are you talking about?
we have lots of private, corporate "urgent care" clinics all over the place where you can go for things like X-rays, pain, infections, wounds, etc. and they are covered by insurance plans
> specially as a North American
Canadians have public health insurance so that might be a "funny" thing specially as a United Statesian
We also do, technically. We just have to wait months and months for a schedule.
And there might not be enough medical material around. Or the machines might be broken.
Also the current political-economical scenario is "privatize all the things! freeze all budgets! cancel all funding!".
You know what? In a single move they cut the budget for... hear me out... virtually all doctorate and post-doc research. Which amounts to 1% of the debt they pardoned the banks.
17:55
1. Super expensive private for the middle/upper class but good/great service
2. Unaffordable private for the lower classes but decent/good service (if they can pay, which they often can't)
3. No insurance but somehow they manage to treat people anyway with subsidies and such, even if they can't afford to pay
4. Public health insurance and enough funds to actually pay for it
5. Public health insurance without enough funds/equipment to actually provide it
Canada is 4, U.S. is a combination of 1/2/3, and Brazil is a combination of 3/5?
with apparently 1/2 encroaching in Brazil too
Brazil is 1, 2 and 5. With some 4 here and there, specially researches and etc.
Politicians and corporations want us to move to 1/2 only
Like, ministers have said "there should be no public free university".
I have difficulty understanding why a country like Brazil would look at the model of health care the United States has built and say, "You know what? We don't even have as much money as they do, but we want our health care system to suck just as bad as theirs!"
the only thing the US has going for it is that the standard of care is good... but actually getting proper care, especially in non-emergency situations, is quickly vanishing from most peoples' budgets.
and the standard of care is NOT world class, by any means. it's only good.
