o_O
Ok, Phone suggestions. Cause I don't want YASMA on my phone :P
Anyone know of an Android phone with the best screen-off battery life possible?
I don't care if it's some crappy tiny screen, crappy 3-year-old Snapdragon 200 SoC, whatever
It just needs to be able to install YASMA and last, oh, at least half a week (pref. a week) on battery :P
With almost no usage, mind. Just connected.
Maybe something like @JourneymanGeek's Jelly?

@Bob a tiny phone with a 10 Ah extra battery pack might work

Dog
@djsmiley2k I fell asleep and made a $730 loss
That's what I get for sleeping on the job :-(

Bob
@allquixotic I also want to avoid carrying a brick around :\
pretty much something I can toss in my bag and forget

Q: I deleted the whole HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software

KarthickI accidentally deleted the whole HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software, my computer is now unable to boot. I have tried system recovery, startup fix, previous good condition and safe mode is not working. How to fix?

Bob
jfc

@Nick use paypal

Bob
I detest any app or service that requires a phone number for login.
@DavidPostill "I accidentally my computer."
@DavidPostill Funnily enough that's actually a recoverable situation.

@Bob Really? Do tell (or answer the question) ;)

Bob
@DavidPostill one sec, trying to confirm
iirc there's backups of the system hives

6:59 AM
@Bob There may be, but how does that help if the system is unbootable?

Bob
@DavidPostill It doesn't need to be bootable.
The recovery environment shouldn't depend on the installed OS at all. It's a separate wim image.
Failing that, any bootable live OS (including the Windows installer) would work.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
The registry backup files on my test system are ... empty o_O (0KB)

@Bob Did you look in C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack?

Bob
7:22 AM
@DavidPostill Yes, those are the files that are empty on one of my test VMs but not the other.
Apparently something might have changed in one of the updates.
Anyway, I've answered.

7:36 AM
@Bob Empty on my system as well. Thanks for answering :)
I use ccleaner and backup the registry at regular intervals.

Bob
@DavidPostill That sentence has me conflicted.
Backups good, ccleaner bad :P

@Bob ccleaner has never caused me any issues :) I can understand why people don't trust it though, after the hacking incident (which did not affect me).

7:52 AM
fffffffffffs
faulty temp traffic lights
sat in traffic for 15 min
then car starts overheating and pops the pressure valve

@djsmiley2k If you're stuck why didn't you turn the engine off?

morning

8:55 AM
oooo more intel attacks?
@DavidPostill I did when it started steaming
I thought the lights were gonna change
only after that happened did I realise people were just driving through the red light

have you seen this idiot who wants to intentionally put up space junk for "artistic reasons"?

@Burgi that weird shiny thing?

@djsmiley2k yes

9:56 AM
I got a payrise!!!!
i'm no longer junior :O
THIS WAS ENTIRELY UNEXPECTED
and in another 6 months there's another one
well, Feb 2019, however long away that is
I'm already on MORE MONEY THAN I'VE EVER HAD
ALSO MY CAR NEARLY BLEW UP
AHHHHHHHHHHH

@Bob the jelly's battery life is inconsistant, and the screen is a pain.
the newer one is supposed to have a bigger battery

@djsmiley2k congrats

@djsmiley2k one of these things is not like the other...

@DavidPostill apparently the latest version is bundled with malware/adware

Bob
@JourneymanGeek how long is inconsistent, and with what kind of usage? :P

10:06 AM
@Bob I mostly use it as an mp3 player ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea but... time?

battery lasts between 2 hours and a week.

Bob
alternatively, what percentage does it drop after x hours?

not even joking there
It has super agressive power saving when not in use
but the screen really is unusably small for chat

Bob
lol
I went with plan c anyway
bought a moto c
(and a moto g6 play)
@JourneymanGeek that's good
though only if it doesn't kill the chat apps

10:22 AM
Ugh I've caught a terrible cold :'(

@rahuldottech 2/64 looks like a false positive to me virustotal.com/#/file/….

10:38 AM
@Bob 0_0
tbh if I didn't use whatsapp for work I'd throw all of it onto my old phone

@Bob also, probably weechat lacks it but a lot of 'western' apps for other markets have lite versions that work well on smaller screens

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't care if it's shit on a small screen -_-

@Bob and presumably are a lot less bloated ;p
the apps are a lot smaller

11:06 AM
WeChat has like a complete app store within it, with mini-apps and what not
It's freaky

@rahuldottech v5.45 has been withdrawn. The latest version is now v5.44 which doesn't have that issue. And your 3rd link does not mention any specific problems. In any case I don't care about anonymous data gathering. I have it enabled in many apps so that they can be improved.

@DavidPostill Okay then

@rahuldottech Nooooooooooooooooo! EC will install it :/

Bob
gah
I need a usb-c => micro usb adapter
not entirely sure they even exist lol
and search terms are useless

@Bob What is the gender at each end?

Bob
@DavidPostill female c, male micro
might've found one, though it's a bit dodgy

Bob
11:53 AM
@DavidPostill yea, that's the "bit dodgy" one I found a sec ago :P

Bob
@DavidPostill about as dodgy and not available in AU :\
suppose I'll just get the arktek one
@DavidPostill thanks for searching :P

12:20 PM
@Bob they exist. I have one.

Bob
@rahuldottech funnily enough they're not supposed to exist by spec
but there's a few cases where they're useful, so *shrug* hopefully nothing explodes

12:41 PM
@Bob apart from the usb c bit, that sounds like a OTG adaptor?

@rahuldottech how does it actually differ from Ubuntu? seems awfully similar

Which websites offer you free email address? Not Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo ... There are ZOHO for example.
But all those I have.
Any others?

Bob
1:19 PM
@djsmiley2k not really, since I want it for charging

@Bob YAATBL? Yet Another Adapter To Be Lost
goes perfectly with YASMA
the problem is people would start calling it "YASMA Messenger", which is literally "Yet Another Shitty Messenger App Messenger"

lol

Bob
1:38 PM
@allquixotic I could glue it into the socket :D

2:00 PM
ok i just heard something that i think is utter bullshit...
apparently if someone stands next to your car with a mobile phone and you call them then press the unlock button on your keys it will unlock your car.
is this true or is it utter bullshit?

There's ONE way that can work
if the lock is ultrasonic (it is not) and the phone can pick up, transmit and play back that sound accurately

@Dog need your knowledge on freaky radio waves

Dog
2:37 PM
@Burgi Ho?
Freaky radio waves or regular ones?

Dog is here, dog! :D

Dog
@Bob Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
Failing that, an Xperia Z5 compact.

woof woof meow
So lets say I give myself £150 from my pay this month, to celebrate
What should I buy :/
@Burgi it can be.

@djsmiley2k beer

lol
I can't drink beer
!!s/beer/cider/

2:45 PM
@djsmiley2k That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
@djsmiley2k I can't drink cider (source)

@Dog is what i described possible via a mobile phone?

Dog
the Zx Compact series have always had incredible battery life both screen on and screen off (especially with stamina mode) Sony just have done some really good firmware optimisations.
My Z3 edges out the Z5 by a little, at 2 weeks standby with 3G/4G on, but obviously the Z5 is a lot more powerful when you do use it. Both are helped by the fact they have a small, 4.3" display, which Sony deliberately limited to 720p to enhance battery life (and speed and responsiveness, compared to larger phones with the same CPU)
@Burgi As JMG said, theoretically with an audio based lock, it might be possible. But a) they're practically unheard of and b) It'd be difficult to get to work in practice due to the narrow bandwidth and quality of mobile phone codecs

Bob
2:52 PM
@Dog bit late, I already ordered the motos :(

Dog
Also, where the fuck has the freeze columns button gone in Google Sheets>!
@Bob Moto whats?

Bob
@Dog a moto c and a moto g6 play
the c for fun, the g6 play for battery
was going for a e5 plus but they're hard to find here

Dog
Ah. Never owned a moto myself (well other than a week of faffing with one before selling it) but they make decent quality and value phones
The Z3c/Z5c are vaguely waterproof though

Bob
@Dog the motos supposedly have the repellent coating but aren't rated for submersion

Dog
Oh they moved the freeze option out of the right click menu and the toolbar into the old fashioned View menu. And made it slightly more capable. That said, who the heck uses drop down menus anymore
@Bob The Sonys are, but i wouldn't count on it

3:03 PM
yet another fire in the city centre....
two massive ones in 24 hours
3 in the last week....
its looking suspicious

Bob
3:24 PM
compare
"Chipset: No"

@Bob well if it has a CPU that's also a SoC, it might not have a named set of support chips... I dunno, I got nothing

Bob
@allquixotic It's actually a Mediatek MT6737M lol
> Today, Androidbiits.com will share a tremendous news with Moto C (XT1757, XT1758) owners. According to XDA Developer Mysteryagr, TWRP 3.1.1-0 Recovery is available for Moto C (XT1757, XT1758). You can use Magisk v16.3 to root Moto C (XT1757, XT1758). Are you wondering how to root Moto C (XT1757, XT1758)? Don’t worry, Androidbiits.com is here to help you in rooting Moto C (XT1757, XT1758). Previously, I have published the simple instructions for rooting Oppo F3 Plus CPH1613. Now, Androidbiits.com will discuss about the step-by-step tutorial to root Moto C (XT1757, XT1758). Isn’t it thrilli
One paragraph. They managed to repeat themselves SEVEN TIMES in ONE FUCKING PARAGRAPH.
At least they named the guy so I can go to the source

ooooooh! another accident outside the office

3:41 PM
:O
@Burgi almost like someone predicted kids being bored, a very hot summer, and people setting fire to things.
@Burgi swap Mobile Phone, for SDR + nice aerial and transmitter.

(was discussed in Matrix a bit earlier, ICYMI)

the fire engines had just left

Just make sure all your friends and family are out of the car, or that you've made backup friends and family at home.

Does anyone know where the weblords kept "Replace Download Zip with Download Unzipped Folder on Git Repos" extension/userscript/custom-browser.
also, my area is experiencing 400mm rains along with the flooding/opening of 33 dams

@Bob WTF :D

Bob
@allquixotic Also apparently the PyParallel dev really likes how the NT kernel handles I/O (news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14866067, news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14523403, etc.)
Specifically, that it's completely async
(...of course, the tradeoff being it's damn complex and easy to get wrong... hellooooo, crashing drivers!)

@Bob does it being async improve IOPS? it might reduce the amount of blocking in userspace but does it improve IOPS to the hardware, that should be the question being asked

Bob
As a user, async is nice and smooth. As a dev... gimme easy sync APIs :P

but it doesn't really matter anyway because 90%+ of Windows systems run an on-access virus scanner, which is a giant boat anchor that limits IOPS severely and/or consumes ridiculous CPU overhead anyway
on-access virus scanners are too expensive for server workloads IMO... probably fine for modern, high-end SSD-based desktops for most workloads, but killer for servers
(except servers that are just passthrough or pure networking, like nginx SSL terminators and such. I mean servers that have applications running on them.)

Bob
5:18 PM
@allquixotic The other giant boat anchor is NTFS :P
Which is what Trent was arguing in another comment. The kernel and its I/O subsystems are amazing. The filesystem... not so much.

@Bob well yeah. Time a file copy or move with several subdirectories and thousands of files. Chuck the same data on a Linux box with ext4, xfs or zfs, or a MacOS box with APFS (or even HFS+) and compare. NTFS will lose every time
deletes aren't much better.
the only thing NTFS doesn't badly screw up is reading sequential or even slightly random data from single, large files
it at least handles that in a semi-sane way

Bob
@allquixotic Wasn't it (much) faster to create/delete files in a non-NTFS VM running on top of NTFS? :P

@Bob yup
because from NTFS' point of view you're just seeking and reading/writing from a single file as the hypervisor calls sync into NT land
and the metadata processing in the VM (non-NTFS) is cheap

Bob
Though you really have to disable all antiviruses before trying to test
When dealing with a tens of thousands of source (and source control) files and icons... telling symantec to piss off was the difference between 10 mins and 20 secs
And that's the modern, supposedly fast, antivirus engine

I think Bitdefender is still the fastest AV for Windows... not sure if most secure/trustworthy/lowest overhead or whatever, you can argue it ten ways to Sunday, but it certainly feels fastest to me

Bob
5:25 PM
@allquixotic I think none is the fastest :D

Windows Defender is just barely fast enough for my use cases but Bitdefender is noticeably faster for some things, like loading directories with lots of big files in them in Explorer

5:40 PM
@Bob fastest is having no data :@P

I've decided a topic for my final year project
It's a suggestion-inator thingy, also known as a recommender.
Based on user history:
"Like this homemade chicken pot pie?" -> "here are the nearest hospitals to die in: [..]"
"I see you like the Bohemian Rhapsody" -> "Read these articles to find out why Freddy Mercury died of AIDS"
you like pokemon -> try yu-gi-oh
playing dnd? -> level up as dm: learn how
..stuff like that

6:39 PM
Sounds very clickbaity, but could be good
Better than what I did anyway xD

@Nick like this?

@allquixotic yup, every single possible suggestion reethi (way)

@allquixotic yes, a gun and some girly clothes. What every man needs.

@allquixotic those aren't too bad. Bad would be going from green tea to birth control pills.
Worse would be cleaning supplies to body bag.
so, what if you're sugested to buy mickey mouse based on godzilla. I'd say that's a sort of balancer.

@Bob Sorry for the delay in replying, have been away in London. Always happy to discuss voting :) I know the feeling of frustration when a question which seems answerable is closed.
In that particular case, it wasn't clear whether the quezstion was about an issue with the program OP was using, or a software-req (which I thought I had) ("can I have an eq that works per app") or possibly an issue with Windws itself
I found the phrasing awkward to parse too ("I also just don't want to equalize most programs and specifically want to use the eq on Spotify") which didn't help me figure out which it was
I can't see them now but I thought there were more comments on the question at the time I reviewed it in the close votes queue, might be neither nor there though
Hope that sheds some light on the thought process, as well as I remember it a week or so later :)

10:52 PM
anyone familiar with cmd.exe?
is there a way to get all possible autocompletion values in cmd.exe or powershell?
including doskeys or aliases
I found windows autocomplete well worthless
I was planning to make an autohotkey that maps <tab> to "[Home]autocompletecmd "
so if I type cd <tab>
it will make autocomplete "cd " which will then autocomplete to

@bertieb Ah. I just read it as a general problem they had trouble solving with program X, and they were open to solutions using program X or otherwise

@Bob Yeah, your answer made sense along those lines, perhaps it was tired reviewing (?); I didn't find it clear at the time.
(a bit like my tired-typing second message up there, talk about awkward phrasing!)
