...So I'm sitting here at my desk at work, clearing emails out and I get two new emails. "Your sick leave request (paid) has been approved for 25.05.2018." (plus one for yesterday, when I was actually sick).
...that's today.
Should I go home?!

If I hear "GDPR" one more freaking time, I swear my head is going to explode

12:31 AM
GDPR? What's that?

12:49 AM
@CanadianLuke in case that wasn't a joke, it's EU privacy and user-data-handling legislation that just took effect and is the reason you probably have a dozen "we've updated our privacy policy!" messages in your inbox.

@ToxicFrog what if it uses its right to forget?

What if the company uses their right to forget and drops all their customers?

> Apple recently announced that it is deprecating a significant portion of essential network services in macOS Server, as they described in a support statement posted on April 24, 2018, “Prepare for changes to macOS Server.” Apple’s note includes:

macOS Server is changing to focus more on management of computers, devices, and storage on your network. As a result, some changes are coming in how Server works. A number of services will be deprecated, and will be hidden on new installations of an update to macOS Server coming in spring 2018.
not that anyone actually seriously uses macos for a server
right?
right?!
> The note lists the services that will be removed in a future release of macOS Server, including calendar and contact support, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name Services (DNS), mail, instant messages, virtual private networking (VPN), NetInstall, Web server, and the Wiki.
lol @ mac dhcp or dns server

@Bob and of course the only real option you have for a server is an all in one or a NUC class machine
I wonder if anyone has made slide out 1 iMac Pro trays....
@Bob so they remove everything someone would like to do on it as a server?
granted there's probably better supported alternatives for all of those
....
github.com/munki/munki I used to use this a few jobs ago
> Munki is an open source project from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
wait what?

1:24 AM
The OSX DNS server is bind

I mean... your router can do DHCP and DNS, right? :P
So obviously MacOS Server can offload that and handle the purely MacOS jobs like... stuff?

@MichaelFrank you mighht not want it to.
I might want to toy with running those off my main router
(admittedly, with the view of replacing my main router with a x86 based device)
but that's for when I move out in a few years and if I can get a small home lab

I have a 2-port 1GB NIC that I've been meaning to toy with. Just not sure if I want to throw it in my CentOS server machine and hand over network operations to that, or build up another box and run pfsense...

I'm pondering something like the ars technica setup
though I might use pihole to manage DNS and DHCP over doing it from scratch
but ehh
not for now
fun part is I can probably fund most of this off my duty allowances

@JourneymanGeek linky?

1:37 AM
that said
if I was doing this, I'd go with fedora and firewalld
so much more pleasant to work with

Bob
Rest in Peace my Dearest Love John @Totalbiscuit Bain July 8, 1984 - May 24, 2018
:(
(cc @allquixotic)

Oh wow :(

33 years old. That's not fair at all.

no, not at all

2:01 AM
@CanadianLuke What did I just read?!

It's true! Just like how Darwin is built on top of a BSD variant!

Bob

Had to download ImgBurn to burn an ISO; it appears 1803 removed the built-in image burner.

Problem is, ImgBurn downloads can be compromised; antivirus removed a copy from one of the mirrors.
The MajorGeeks mirror is good.

Bob
2:15 AM
Pretty sure the built-in burner is still there.

2:27 AM
people still burn ISOs to disk? :(
I can't really check, this PC dosen't have an optical drive (and I just use the emulation on my IODD for that sorta thing)

Burn to USB :P Rufus (or uNetBootIn) to the rescue!

Running multiple malware scans – Norton Security came up clean.
Still doing Windows Defender.

3:09 AM
You know what would be good? If we were all the borg.
All humans being wired together so we could share our thoughts and everyone would help everyone else and we'd all be completely free of conflict and disagreements because everyone's brain was wired to everyone else's and everyone would understand everyone else and all our knowledge would be shared together in the pursuit of perfection.

@Bob to be fair, a good bit of that code probably came from the BSDs
(as indicated by the fact that many of their manpages are from BSD)
@Bob Wow. He was only one year older than me
what a bummer :(

Oh and I'm back on the funny drugs. But it's ok, the lube was contained this time.

@CircusCat Why, man? Can't you just... not?

3:24 AM
@allquixotic because I want to be the Borg.

Also I can't read that twitter message because bloody GDPR

@CircusCat I don't want you in my brain.
You don't want to be in my brain either
@allquixotic he's a year younger than the human :(
@CircusCat considering declaring funny drugs a kickable offense.

Goddammit twitter's GDPR shit is broken.
@JourneymanGeek because you have no sense of humour?

Its either a joke gone too far, or if talking about it here encourages you to keep doing it, its clearly not healthy

3:26 AM
It is quite literally funny

hello, can I get linux help here?

Some things are just not funny at all
@J.L.Louis not right now, sorry.

I'll take that as a yes.

@CircusCat people get worried. You nearly sent poor @bwDraco into a panic attack.
@J.L.Louis we encourage people to ask on the main site. Or just complain about things rather than asking to ask.
@CircusCat so more or less. NO ONE finds it funny.

I'm not sure whether you're serious

3:28 AM
@J.L.Louis about yelling @CircusCat about his possible drug habit? Yes.

@CircusCat Look, we care about your health. Please don't abuse your body like that.

Who's John Bain?

@CircusCat and you have had a series of stunts like this.

@JourneymanGeek Your tone sounds sarcastic, but I can't be sure.

You keep pushing the limits, and eventually someone has had enough.

3:29 AM
Urgh Jesus christ. Never heard of the guy but just like avicii, far too young.

I mean, sure, we try to deal with things 'in chat' as much as possible.

Okay, great.
Sorry for interrupting your drug conversations but. ..

but at some point, we'll go "ok, we're done"
@J.L.Louis That's the nature or RA.

@JourneymanGeek because I blocked him again? I was totally sober when I did that.

I'm almost done.

3:30 AM
Let's deescalate this. Try to change the subject.

I'm trying to rename a bunch of files in my directory to names such as 2 (1).jpg 2 (2).jpg .. .
n=1
for file in * do
	mv $file "2 ($n).jpg"
	N=$((N+1))
done

@CircusCat I deal with the shit that happens here. So.. its just me.
Me going "ok, man, this stops"
k?

But this has an error near mv

@J.L.Louis what's the error?

unexpected token near mv

Bob
3:31 AM
Quote your arguments.

"$file" ?

shouldn't the do be a new line? or am I talking out my donkey?

@J.L.Louis The do keyword must be on its own line.

Bob
Hmmmm that's odd
the message @bwDraco replied to didn't appear for me o.O

3:34 AM
okay I fixed it. I needed semicolon after do
thanks guys :)

Bob
funfun chat bugs

Oh, the code block.

The funny drugs make me funny. Without them, I'm a boring person cat. Who just sleeps all day and kicks himself.

!!/tell J.L.Louis matrix

@bwDraco Command matrix does not exist. (note that /tell works on commands, it's not an echo.)

3:35 AM
Licks. Damn autocorrect.

Oops, the script renamed itself and failed.
now it's gone
:(

just like TotalBiscuit :(

@J.L.Louis OK a) why? And b) what were the filenames before?

they are just random screenshots that are named by timestamp, like:"Screenshot from 2018-05-24 23-02-42"

Umm yeah, quoting required.

3:41 AM
If the name contains an embedded space, yes, you need to enclose it in quotes.

Aka what Bob said.

Same goes if the name contains special characters.

Spaces in the file name make 'mv' interpret 'Screenshot' and 'from' as two separate arguments.

okay, I'll learn scripting later
I just did them by hand, but forget to rename the extention
is there a quick way to rename *.png to *.jpg?

Also, N != n.

Bob
3:43 AM
Doesn't matter if it has spaces or not. Always, always quote.

Linux scripting is case sensitive.
Linux everything is case sensitive, unless otherwise specified.

-_- why couldn't the shell just understand C?

@J.L.Louis because its not a C shell?

Bob

Q: Changing extension to multiple files

afbr1201I would like to change a file extension from *.txt to *.text. I tried using the basename command, but I'm having trouble on changing more than one file. I'm getting this error: basename: too many arguments Try basename --help' for more information Here's my code: files=`ls -1 *.txt` for x i...

Google is your friend.
Well, not really. Google is evil. But useful.

damn, another shell script

3:44 AM
@Bob ironic, considering their motto used to be "don't be evil"

Bob
That won't actually change the file data though. Renaming .jpg to .png is rather useless when they're still jpg data.

@CircusCat I'll totally look into C shell

Bob
ohhhhhhhhhhh boy
renaming files in C ... really, anything in C ... is a bad time

TIL Bob is not a fan of C

lol

3:49 AM
She sells C shells on the C shore.
Cmon that totally deserves a star.
2

idk, C is my primary language, and I think I'll have a better time with it than shell scripting

lol
C shell was the worst part of my favourite job

I think only the most critical hot sections of kernels get written in C anymore, except for Linux which is entirely C; but besides Linux, the Windows and XNU kernels are mostly C++

Ave
is hurd C too?

yup
Can't wait for web assembly so I can do front end web apps in C

3:58 AM
22% of the FreeBSD kernel source is C++, according to Github

4:18 AM
Shell scripting is my primary language because my jobs have mainly been to maintain the thing so more specialist developers have something to run their C(++/#) things on.
Shell things were needed to enable the C things to work so the science things could run on them.

Bob
some languages can be passably used for shell-like scripting
perl, python

Ruby!

Bob
yes, ruby :P
heck, if you stretch it you can do most things alright with C#, Java

TBH I prefer a good Ruby script over a Bash or other shell script for any shell-like task longer than 2 or 3 lines, especially if there's going to be control flow or string parsing

Bob
but C++ is more or less on the other side of the line. C is, if anything, worse.
@allquixotic I dislike the bash syntax myself

4:23 AM
I found it funnier to use bash for passable perl-like scripting

Bob
used python in the past

and Ruby/Python/Perl have the advantage that they don't have to be compiled; you can directly edit the file you execute, which isn't the case for C# or Java

Bob
nowadays I'll probably go between Python and C# depending on complexity (or PowerShell)
C is just horrible because it supports basically none of the standard shell functions
copy a file? good luck
@allquixotic not quite true :P roslyn introduced a C# repl
an official one*

Python is my least favorite language in that family of similarish languages, mainly because of the whitespace sensitivity in the syntax... python with brackets is okay (it's an alternative interpreter frontend IIRC that does replacement of brackets with proper whitespace as needed)

Bob
and there's a bunch of Java repls
heck, if you want to rename a file in C... good luck

4:26 AM
and my familiarity with Ruby has allowed me to make my code extremely expressive, which feels great to write

Bob
though, now that I think of it

@Bob you're better off using VisualBasic

Bob
@J.L.Louis there are a few shells with more c-like syntax that might be more to your liking. tcsh, etc.

Heck does that still even exist?

@Bob you really can't / shouldn't do much in C without libraries; if you can include something like GLib, a lot of common tasks are at least bearable to do
not to mention portable

Bob
4:28 AM
I think the old csh still exists but it's considered outdated

Ave
last time I used csh it was on NeXTSTEP 4.2
which is like 18 years old

a GLib-based C REPL would be, while far less syntactically sugary than something like a scripting language or C++ or C#, still be usable and provide scripts that work fine across Windows/*NIX without hacks or platform-specific code
good string library, good file library, good network library, optional SOAP implementation, optional XML and JSON, optional graphics (GTK), etc.

I had to deal with a primitive hacker using csh to try cover his tracks while smooshing around a legacy system....
That was fun. I put that in my CV.

@Bob heh, there were many proposals to replaced the old c based monstrocity that glued together many things at the studio I used to work at at with python.
Most... were outright rejected with a grumpy cat no
@Ave I don't want to be agist, but isn't that almost as old as you are?

Ave
yes, I was using it in a vm a couple days ago

4:42 AM
wait. It runs on x86 on a VM?
maaan, 20something year old me would be all over that :(

5:09 AM
This is the first time I've seen antivirus applications conflict with each other.
(discussion ongoing at Matrix)

1 hour later…
Ave
6:29 AM
I still can't access your matrix

any error messages?

Ave
nope
I just don't get any of the messages.

0_0
It says you're offline

Ave

and I can't send you a message either (off my home server)
is your himeserver running?

Ave
6:31 AM
yes

morning

tested federation?

Ave
the federation test site errors out on me
has timeout, whihc is bs

erm
I THINK that's the problem
I'm a lazy arse... so I'd assume I don't have the port blocked so... check to see if you have the federation port open?

Ave
it is

6:36 AM
... now it says you're online
wait.
ugh, I'm clearly an idiot, and can confirm the federation test site is borked
which gets us no closer to know what's up

Ave
I just added you to a DM, does that at least work?

"Internal Server Error"
Now I know DMs do work on my instance...

Ave
good platform, innit

;p
works for me, except when it dosen't.

Ave
yeah. This is why I still use xmpp. It just works.

Bob
6:39 AM
@Ave you using the same domain as before?

Ave
@JourneymanGeek can you give the federation test link?
@Bob yes.

@Ave its broken for me too

Ave
yeah, I just am trying some stuffs
and I don't want to dig for link if you have it

Bob
@Ave it's responding on IPv6
turn off IPv6, maybe

ttps://matrix.org/federationtester/api/report?server_name=<your_server_name>
oh

Bob
6:41 AM
what's your python-twisted package version?

I don't think I have the ipv6 domain record set up

Bob
yea I played that game recently
IPv6 works-ish

Ave
@Bob it's on cf, I can't do that.

Bob
ugh

Ave
oh god I tihnk that I see what the issue is

Bob
6:42 AM
So. IPv6 works iff both sides have python-twisted >= 17.1.0
if only one side has that ... IPv6 works one-way

which I do
and most of us should? Unless we're running a package version that's outdated....
Oh wait.

Bob
unfortunately, the deb package currently only does 16.x unless you manually update -_-

Ave
I'm checking it out.

Bob
my stop-gap was to disable IPv6 on my server and remove my AAAA records, which works
if you advertise IPv6 (via AAAA), you'd better have the right packages to actually support it
though I suppose you could specify otherwise with a _srv ... maybe

Ave
okay, I just think that I fixed it.
I had a lot of issues with ports.
@JourneymanGeek did you see my message?

6:51 AM
I have a invite that is stuck

Ave
weird

Bob
@Ave we saw your message. are you not seeing ours?

Ave
nope
my DNS stuff are fixed now
I disabled CF, no ipv6 either
I'll wait a couple hours to see if dns caches expiring helps

7:43 AM
morning

my god, docker is dumb in some dumb ways.

this matrix thing sounds like it needs a centralised server to manage all the incoming streams.... oh wait...

excellent.... tried to exercise my right to be removed and get a "this address doesn't exist"

7:59 AM
xD

8:15 AM
@Burgi in theory you could just run a central server for all of us

8:29 AM
i can't afford to host my own server

i.e. on your own desktop or something
it's not perticularly bad, until you join #matrix

Bob
or just join quix's server directly
hm, if anyone's around... can you see my messages in matrix? and can you try saying something?
idk if I just broke my homeserver by updating it :P
*poke* @djsmiley2k?

9:07 AM
so we just had 2 power cuts.
and found out that of the 3 networking people, only one's PC was ever connected to their desktop UPS
/me sighs

@Burgi I think most of the people running their own homeservers are doing it cause peer pressure cause we think its cool fun

first genuine IPS question that isn't solved by common sense:

Q: Dementia: How to cut off useless advice to a caregiver from well meaning people?

ab2My husband has moderate dementia. The exact cause has been variously diagnosed, but it is probably not Alzheimer's. I haven't broadcast the fact, but, of course my friends and some of my closer acquaintances know, and the therapists. I am constantly getting unhelpful advice, such as: You m...

@JourneymanGeek fair enough :)

@Burgi I think a few people use matrix.org
and quix has open signups on his I think

9:31 AM
server maintenance isn't something i really care about beyond being paid for it in my job
its why i use shared web hosting

oh god
I did that once.
My needs are too strange and varied + its a fair bit more pricy in many cases than what I do

or plain vanilla spam

1 hour later…
11:03 AM
how are other countries in europe handling GDPR day?

Ave
no news in turkey.

wtf uber, litterally wtf

Bob
11:30 AM
AliExpress is in on the GDPRty
except they don't mention it
just a privacy policy update conveniently on the 25th

not quite a big clive level teardown but I'm surprised the cheap little thing actually has a little generator inside
( little wind up torch I got for a fiver)

@Bob funny thing is that's technically not 'legal'
but I don't think there's gonna be any big outrage about it

@djsmiley2k unlike here ;p
its like half of meta is about arbitration or GDPR

lol
How can it be about GDPR?
It's really not that complicated.
It's annoying to implement in some cases, sure.

11:40 AM
Riight
but looking at those 6
only 2 of them are actually to do with GDPR
and it just happens to conincide with the timing.

That shows how boring I find it? ;p

and some folk are just...
downright nasty about stuff like that
@djsmiley2k matrix ;p

!!s/about stuff like that//

@djsmiley2k downright nasty about (source)
@djsmiley2k downright nasty (source)

11:46 AM
danbg right

12:35 PM
@Ave I mean, you're the only one still having problems with reliably sending/receiving messages with your homeserver. The others of us who are using matrix.org, roota.cc, or Bob/CanadianLuke/Geek's server are up and running. Does your server have packet loss? Ping timeouts? Saturated uplink? 100% CPU on the Synapse process?
I mean I had 100% CPU usage on the Synapse process for an extended period of time while I was federating #matrix:matrix.org, something that is a known issue and you're explicitly not supposed to do until they fix some bugs, and I was still able to reliably chat in #ra...

12:50 PM
@allquixotic stuck in turkey...

Good Morning RA!
Here's the updates to this chatroom's terms of service and privacy policy!
GDRP GDRP GDPR!

@allquixotic yanno? That I keep telling people not to do this is going to turn into a matrix/ra running joke ._.
