4:02 PM
Great start.
Where's my bottle of cheap ebay Everclear clone...
Actually this is probably a good time to apply those 2 years of missing updates on the hypervisor...
Next problem: SSH key to access hypervisor was on my old laptop. I've never had to access it since buying my new one, so err...

this sounds like it is going to be a busy weekend for you

@Burgi I was planning to go out and meet girls this evening.

sober or in a lube spilling state?

Does GDPR give me any compensation rights when companies lose my data?

yes
the ICO website has a good FAQ on it

4:09 PM
I mean non-"personal" data. As in when their UPS takes the day off when there's a power cut and my server goes down.

Bob
@CircusCat that's the ovh deal I was talking about, yea

@Bob Oh nice! Oneprovider deal with OVH now?

Bob
DO-32-APAC is basically the same specs as my current DISCOVER-32 but cheaper

Uhh, anyone got a Windows remote desktop server I could borrow for a bit?

Bob
@CircusCat ...I guess so? it's the same specs and price :P
@CircusCat sure, one sec

4:13 PM
XenCenter seems to want to download updates to the local machine then upload them to the server it's updating. Which is a little bit tedious on a mobile 4G connection.

Bob
@CircusCat Anything in particular you need? disk space, ..., ?

@Bob Few hundred megs to install XenCenter

Bob
k, lemme just create the users
and by that I mean lemme just find the login details for myself first

Basically download a few 100MB updates, upload them to server, delete. Because no support contract = tedious update process.

Bob
@CircusCat yea long as you don't need several GBs, cause I'd need to expand the disk

4:15 PM
@Bob The biggest update is 61.6MB.

Bob
@CircusCat you on matrix?
I'd rather PM the details

@Bob Yes. Although now that I think about it, never mind. I don't know the password to access the server, it's saved in my local XenCenter.

Bob
:\

<frantically searches every local drive for *.kdbx>

Bob
well, I'm about to head to bed so I'll set it up first just in case

4:17 PM
@Bob Thanks.
I P2V'd my old laptop when I got the new one so I should be able to find it somewhere
@Burgi In a controlled, socially lubricated state

O.o

@Burgi It's a funny term a friend came up with... Apparently British people are stuck up and need some "social lubricant"
Because "Documents" was literally the first folder I looked in and I was too stupid to find it...

@CircusCat there's definitely something wrong with us, but I thought it was the excessive alcohol consumption

4:37 PM
@CircusCat If you have Windows 10, use bash to find it quickly - find . -iname "*.kdbx"

@CanadianLuke It would have been easier if my eyes were capable of seeing it when I opened my Documents folder to begin with

I'm a keyboard warrior :P So I do commands for most things

Bob
@CanadianLuke so, you can either use the indexed windows search or the non-indexed find ... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I clicked "I DO NOT ACCEPT" just out of spite.

Bob
4:42 PM
@CircusCat so how's your deleted hidden account? :P
(as if they'd actually delete any of the data)

@Bob That's right!
So, I guess it'd be quicker to do Windows, *.kdbx, Enter

@Bob Does 1000GB for 40 EUR count?
Lol that actually worked
In like half a second.
Fuck me.

Since Vista

Bob
@CircusCat y'know? ... that's close, yea. linky? :P

With Windows 10, you can type pretty much ANYWHERE when you're in the Start Menu

4:46 PM
Literally only checked cause you just mentioned them!

@CircusCat s/privacy/data

Bob
@CircusCat ...funnily enough the server I wanted to replace was one of theirs on HDD (not the one you're connected to; that's one of the SSD ones)
lol. the Start-3-L is actually the one you're currently on
except I'm on the older version

Are we looking into getting a dedicated server for our new chat?

Bob
same CPU, same RAM, half the storage, 29 EUR/month
@CanadianLuke @allquixotic's already hosting it
and technically I'm also hosting it. as is @JourneymanGeek. and some others.

4:48 PM
plus if you want you can run your own

@Bob Hah. Interesting.

what happens to a room, if the homeserver it came from goes away?

Bob
        NAME                                                   STATE     READ WRITE CKSUM
        tank                                                   ONLINE       0     0     0
          ata-SAMSUNG_MZ7LN256HMJP-00000_S2MJNX0H807995-part1  ONLINE       0     0     0
          ata-SAMSUNG_MZ7LN256HMJP-00000_S2MJNX0H807998-part1  ONLINE       0     0     0
the older version. 2x 250
new one's 2x 500 but costs 30% more
@djsmiley2k ...good question. I think it still works, and the remaining homeservers can list it as a room under their own address

I had been tempted to use some sorta hybrid setup, rent one SSD server, one HDD server, use a 1G/10G internal pipe between them. But nothing actually worked out cheaper than renting a used one with the exact specs I wanted from Hetzner, that someone else had helpfully paid the setup fees for already

Bob
so e.g. you can join #rootaccess:matrix.vulpin.com and get the same room
@CircusCat yea, I need to look into getting a hybrid storage server sometime

4:50 PM
!!xkcd datacenter scale

@CanadianLuke Something went on fire; status 403
2

Bob
right now mine are pure SSD or pure HDD
(and I'm considering replacing one of the HDD ones with SSD - the SYD one)

!!xkcd 1737

There we go!

4:54 PM
Apparently this Hetzner power cut meant they had to replace >200 server power supplies too -_-

Bob
o.O

Also, Xenserver updates in chronological order: 013, 022, 023, 018, 025, 024, 027, 029, 028, 026 -_-

5:09 PM
@Bob funny you should mention that; I've had like three or four hosting providers tell me "Stick with OVH" when I asked them if they could match or beat OVH's offer
the only reason I got Delimiter was because of the incredible value, but not even Delimiter can match OVH's prices at either 64 or 128 GB of RAM, regardless of CPU uArch

Bob
@allquixotic wow

in terms of RAM price per month per GB, at 32 GB and higher, OVH appears to be the cheapest in the world unless you get some super special secret deal or limited time offer

Bob
so they exist purely for the suckers who don't know about ovh (...or want better support I guess, idk)

as far as regular prices though, OVH is king

Bob
@allquixotic online is up there, but fewer locations

5:10 PM
yeah, and crossing the Atlantic adds about 50-60 ms ping even on fiber to the premises, whereas Canada adds about 10-20 ms
that one you linked to most recently (like 1-3 weeks ago) on WebHostingTalk actually told me to stick to OVH too, and said the DRAM conspiracy (they actually linked the article) was inhibiting their ability to offer cheaper prices on high memory machines
they were willing to build a much lower DRAM system for a slightly cheaper price than OVH, but I said nah
also, aside from the flash drive weirdness, OVH support has always been good to great... better than Hetzner and Delimiter by a long shot
Delimiter: 9 AM to 5 PM US Central time Monday-Friday only; often misses deadlines; blames other people saying the problem is out of their control
Hetzner: takes a native German speaker to translate their wacky Grenglish to proper English so you can understand wtf they're saying; they have 7 day a week support but limited hours
OVH: 24/7 support, only slightly wacky French Canadian English, great prices, and technicians who are experts at server provisioning, networking, structured cabling, cooling, but apparently flunked the "Can they plug in a USB-A device" part of the certification they have to get

Bob
@allquixotic well, we know OVH techs have trouble with electric connectors :P

@Bob that's what I meant, lol

Bob
your USB drive, my server that didn't work because they accidentally a connector...

OVH technician ^^

that you?

5:20 PM
lol no that's electroboom

lol

Bob
@allquixotic very recognisable eyebrows/forehead :P
I swear they're wriggling in the still
^ that's his thing for those who don't know

@ThatBrazilianGuy Done

Bob
oh god this is amazing
(watch past 0:40)

5:46 PM
@allquixotic It may be different now but when I was last with them it was abysmal. If any of their automated systems detected "suspicious activity" or you got an automated DCMA notice, they'd cut you off instantly without recourse or access to your data.
Had to whinge at management for a week to get my server restored after doing a UDP speed test triggered their "port scanning/DDoS detection"
And they were like "Nope we can't adjust our detection algorithms or add an exception"
I guess they're one of the many companies where if your support issue fits in the standard support script/flowchart somewhere you'll be fine, if computer says no you're screwed.
@Burgi Thanks to Bob's server I've managed to get up to the 2018 patchsets now, I may make it out to the pub tonight after all.
Assuming everything comes up cleanly after I reboot... if not it's like a 3 day wait for a KVM

6:01 PM
@Bob love it!

6:29 PM
@Burgi Dat 240p
Also why the fuck did it autoplay this after, is it because Bob posted it?

i had weird stuff like that happen @CircusCat
someone @JourneymanGeek maybe, mentioned Sitars (and posted a youtube vid of someone playing one
next day youtube playing my 'Music mix' plays me some video of people playing sitars, after I've never watched one

6:45 PM
@CircusCat been using them a few years and have never had any problems with automated systems thinking my server is performing "suspicious activity"
but then I don't actively try to do weird things either

Ave
7:09 PM
@djsmiley2k no
@allquixotic synapse isn't at 100%. I have plenty of ram. I just had many issues with cloudflare, dns records, port forwarding and firewalls. Now it seems to be fixed.
I'm not federating matrix.org

@XKCD GDPR? GDPR!

it's just spam at this point

amen.

if it gives me rights, I like it
easy to say goodbye to your rights
very relaxing
sometimes you have to make some effort to get a less shitty world

Ave
7:21 PM

is that Les Miserables?

Ave
all the non-USPS emails I got in last day or so has been GDPR stuffs

yeah

Ave
also hey zanna!

7:22 PM
everyone was crying in the cinema when I saw that film. I was like... woah there's something wrong with me
@Ave hey <3

I was looking for him scream-singnig "YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS!" in the middle of the movie but I couldn't find it in gif form

@Zanna who leaked the teargas??

I love the movie despite its flaws; I guess I'm flawed ;p

@jokerdino the director I guess

@allquixotic I'll take your word for it?

7:24 PM
I only went to watch that movie because my flatmate made some of the costumes

wozzah

I loved the scene at the beginning where the priest was Christianly nice to the thief
it went down and down and down and downhill from there

no spoilers plz

I was like woah a Christian actually implemented Christian values
that never happens!

Ave
I'm tempted to watch it now.

7:26 PM
oh no
@jokerdino I can't remember what happened anyway. Lost interest progressively throughout
at the point where people were literally swimming in rivers of excrement I just had to deliberately unsuspend my disbelief, because it was too disturbing

that must really be it for the night

:P

7:44 PM
@Zanna I really should see it. Have been meaning to for a long while

oh no
haha well, all the best

@Zanna I just read your other messages, lol. Idk. It's not really the type of movie which I'm into.
But apparently it's a Big Deal â„¢
So I should give it a shot

I don't care what is a big deal

@Zanna my mom told me to watch it too. A while back.
So I guess I will, eventually

the dominant culture is imperialist white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy. So, I regard its Big Deals critically where possible :D
oh well, what mum says is another matter

7:47 PM
Speaking of entertainment, if any of you are looking for something to watch, I absolutely cannot recommend Elementary and Brooklyn Nine-Nine enough. Brilliant TV shows.
@Zanna not in India :)

I need to move to India...

@Zanna it has its flaws like every other place, but I'd choose it over the US anyday

I'm from the UK
and I live in it too

I mean, there was a time when I used to want to go to an Ivy League. But seeing the state of the country, no way.
@Zanna do you like it?

I've been to the US. Disturbing place

7:49 PM
I'd choose literally almost anything over the US, tbh.

@rahuldottech no!
it has some good theatre

@Zanna where in the UK are you from, if you don't mind me asking and if you're okay disclosing that?

I'm from Lincolnshire in the East Midlands. Very boring, flat, rural area. But I lived in London from Jan 2012 - June 2017

I see.
I've been to London. But I was 6, so mostly all that I remember is having softies with my mom at McDonald's and the London Eye.
Oh, and Buckingham palace.

The things I somewhat like about my country are mostly counterculture and radical folk. It's a terrible country, so it has some good rebellion XD

7:54 PM
@Zanna there's so much I love about my country. But so much that I really don't like.

The London Eye is so overpriced man, what an exploitative thing
it's a good view but why do they charge an arm and a leg for it

@Zanna I have no idea how much I paid, but tourist attractions in general are always overpriced

that's true
@rahuldottech oh yeah?

All over the world, speaking from experience

you must be well-travelled :)

7:57 PM
@Zanna I am. Unfortunately, haven't been anywhere on a few years since my parents split up

@rahuldottech I always remember food and drink XD I am such a glutton

Might go to Bhutan soon though. My mom (who's a professor) might get a depuation to a uni there

@rahuldottech aww sorry about that
Bhutan looks like such a wonderful place
would love to go there
but I think they limit tourism and that makes sense
there's something a little rotten about the whole thing

I could go on and on...

Still working through the idea of travel from an ethical perspective

8:00 PM
@Zanna I love how diverse it is. But I don't like that there's so much hate towards some groups of society and religions. I hate how some people still believe in the messed up and inhumane cast system. I love how many cultures you get to experience, and all the different sorts of people. But I hate how messy the political system is. It's not as bad as the US, but it's pretty messy.
@Zanna it's okay, I've learnt to deal with it. Life isn't very easy as most guys here know, but I'm pulling through :)
@Zanna explain?
@Zanna What do ethics have to do with traveling?

well... I could go on and on. Not everyone is economically able to travel, and I'm not sure how much of it is really sustainable... I also think there is... in my culture, an acquisitive attitude... to go and take possession of places/experiences and make them part of us. To make ourselves larger. It is an attitude of entitlement... it is an extractive orientation. This is not the only impulse behind the wish to travel, but it is one I recognise and feel critical towards
oh ethics have to do with everything, don't you think?

@Zanna ah, yes, of course. I just wondered where you were coming from in this case
It's an interesting view

Ave
@Zanna this is a valid point of view. I agree with the first sentence with examples, I don't think that previous actions done by people of same culture should stop you from doing something you want, especially if you're aware of their wrongdoings and are sure that you won't do that.

@rahuldottech diversity is the best thing about London. But everyone says that, and I am uncomfortable about how, as white people, we see "diversity" as something to enjoy in a selfish way, something we consume like exotic food, while we do nothing to fight the structural racism in our society

That said, there are always going to be people who for whom it's not financially feasible to do what you are doing or wish to do. Unfortunately, that's just the way that it is. I don't think that should stop you from experiencing stuff, as long as you're not throwing money away. Also, something I believe in is that whole your culture is an integral part of you, it doesn't have to define who you are. You can totally go and enjoy a place and experience it without taking possession of it, right?

8:09 PM
@Ave :) thank you. I am not sure I will not do that. I catch myself doing bad stuff all the time. But I hope I will have some opportunities to travel in ways that are not harmful

You don't have to enjoy diversity in a selfish way. To me, going around the world and seeing how different people live and cope with problems and enjoy life is not selfish in itself.
But that's just the traveling aspect
> we see "diversity" as something to enjoy in a selfish way, something we consume like exotic food, while we do nothing to fight the structural racism in our society
This happens in India too. Probably happens everywhere. We boast about how diverse we ate while some sections of society get grossly mistreated or ignored

@rahuldottech yes I agree with you

@Zanna Surely that's a generalization about white people, since at least you are so cognizant about the problem that I can't imagine you would view diversity in that selfish way which you just described? And do there not exist any other white people who would agree with you? Just saying that's a rather broad brush you're painting with there.

#NotAllWhitePeople :P
I'm not saying travelling is bad. I'm just trying to explain the ethical issues that I see around it
There is an environmental impact
There is an economic impact
There are interactions...

Hmm... I guess, try to minimize your use of disposable containers, and the environmental impact is really minimal. The airplane you fly on, the bus/train you ride on, will get 99.9999999% the same MPG with or without you and your luggage aboard :) Most of their weight is the vehicle itself and its fuel.

8:18 PM
right, but if everyone took one less holiday
that's what I'm trying to unlearn, my culture's ignorance and denial of interdependence

@Zanna That's hard to unlearn.

Eh. I kind of feel like the argument by the (defunct?) website lifeaftertheoilcrash.net is pretty valid: conserving and being efficient does little but divert petroleum resources to other tasks instead. In short, our culture is built on growth, and growth means money = oil, and if there's money on the table, it's going to get converted into someone consuming oil somewhere

@FreezePhoenix yes, but if we don't do it, we gonna sink this little spaceship

For instance if you save money by not traveling, you'll spend that on (take your pick thing) which is inevitably going to transfer into consumption of oil
The only way to prevent it would be to literally stow away massive portions of the world's money in bank accounts, sit on it, and don't spend it

yeah, have to end the indefinite growth culture
have to leave the oil in the ground
we literally must do it

8:21 PM
@Zanna I'd rather sink the spaceship then tear a part of me out.

hehe, as Prof. Albert Bartlett said, people think "The faster we drill all the oil out of the ground and use it all up, the better off we'll be!"

you know, if you leave coal in the ground, it cleans water
if you get it out and burn it, if pollutes water

@Zanna Activated coal... not coal.

I used to be idealistic about ethics, the environment, etc. Then I got old and cynical :(
Still drive a Prius C though :P

there's a lot of good news
renewables are cheaper than the black stuff

8:24 PM
The best reduction of my carbon footprint I've done in recent years is starting to telework 2 to 4 days per week rather than driving 23 miles to work... the best MPG is the MPG of not driving

you should stop being cynical :) a few years ago I went to this political meeting about TTIP
and one of the speakers said "we will defeat TTIP, just like we defeated [list of oppressive trade deals] and we will defeat whatever comes after it. We just have to keep fighting"
I only 1/4 believed him
but we did defeat TTIP
people power does work
activists are like the political immune system

Well, change is hard to come by. A lot of the people who just don't see the direction of real progress will backlash on us when we advance too far. That's part of what happens in democracies. 2 steps forward, 1.9 steps back
We're seeing that in the US now, and it'll be another ~6 years until we probably have a realistic chance of going forward again
and we'll be lucky if we don't devolve into proper authoritarianism by then

tell me about it. My mind is blown by the backlash against social justice movements these days

2 steps forward, 1.9 steps backwards...

I can only cheesily quote MLK Jnr "if you can't fly then run... if you can't run then walk... if you can't walk then crawl... just keep moving forward"
shrug
bed time

8:29 PM
Eh. I can see both sides. I do think it's silly to fall into the trap of being self-loathing because of your "privilege" or whatever. Just treat other people like people, be cognizant of your biases and improve upon them...

@Zanna Night.

:)
@allquixotic who's self-loathing?
don't listen to what the anti-SJ people say about the SJ people

I don't listen to anyone
/me shrugs

good >_<

Look how much I don't listen to @JourneymanGeek and how much it drives him insane!
|Doesn't mean I don't care or value his input
but I don't let it direct me solely
/me shrugs
The arguement that either way the plane will fly, is a broken arguement too

8:30 PM
that's not the same as not-listening XD

why should I bother doing anything, after all, the world will continue no matter what I do.
Why bother putting rubbish in the bin

yes. exactly

why bother braking when someone is in the road
xD extreme examples make funny points.

2 hours later…
10:32 PM
wtf LG? they send me an email saying "Trust only genuine LG replacement parts" and it links to this which has broken CSS

10:57 PM
@allquixotic Say GDPR again one more time, I dare you. 😡😡😡😡😡

Ave
so I said gdpr and this happened
in The Bridge, 22 mins ago, by Ave
What happened was, they used to not allow me to change my birthday to anything above 1995 because I joined on 2008 and COPPA and stuffs. They apparently recently changed that, so I was like "oh hey let's set it to 2000". I do that, save it, and that happens.

11:17 PM
P.S. What's the usual method these days for doing easy Windows updates on offline/airgapped Win 10 machines?
Win 7 had offline update rollups...

@Ave Wait... You... Joined... Twitter... at 8 years old?!

@CircusCat hmmm wsus offline updates should still work

@JourneymanGeek Thanks

> Einführung

I wonder where my xp update roll-up is...

11:29 PM
It's swearing at me!

It's German. It sounds almost are sweary as Finnish but less likely to stab you

> gmail search: gdpr|subject:("terms of service"|"privacy policy")

Earliest "gdpr" result: Dec. 2015

@ThatBrazilianGuy Was it a typo?

No.
@JourneymanGeek Huh?

Long awaited... 2015... gejus
I'm quite surprised actually, that having done basically zero maintenance in two years and having never designed/configured any of it to handle an unexpected power outage, the hypervisor/host on my rented server and everything on it just works fine.

11:41 PM
Hey @CircusCat since you're awake and all

I guess I used to build things robustly by default, back before I started this trend of turning off my higher brain functions for fun on a daily basis.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Woof?

Can I bug you on how to install kvm qemu on a headless server?

I'm trying to follow these tutorials but I'm finding them weird:

@ThatBrazilianGuy @Bob or @allquixotic would probably be better - I could guide you through it, but as for actual experience of having done it, I've only lightly experimented with KVM+QEMU setups

11:44 PM
In fact, just performing apt-get install libvirt-bin gives me:
> The following additional packages will be installed:
acl augeas-lenses bridge-utils cpu-checker dconf-gsettings-backend dconf-service dmeventd dmidecode dns-root-data dnsmasq-base ebtables fontconfig
fontconfig-config fonts-dejavu-core glib-networking glib-networking-common glib-networking-services gsettings-desktop-schemas
gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-x ibverbs-providers ipxe-qemu ipxe-qemu-256k-compat-efi-roms libaa1 libaio1
libasound2 libasound2-data libasyncns0 libaugeas0 libavahi-client3 libavahi-common-data libavahi-common3 libavc1394-0 libbluetoo

As far as I know it goes 1) Pick your host OS - modern flavours of Ubuntu being the easiest for lazy cats, 2) install the virtualisation pseudopackages

Wow.. that is a lot of extra packages. o.o

@ThatBrazilianGuy That's... normal
Emulating every single component of a modern computer in software does require a lot of libraries and packages.

If I run the entire command as suggester (apt-get install qemu-kvm libvirt-bin virtinst bridge-utils cpu-checker) I get even more pacakges:
> acl adwaita-icon-theme at-spi2-core augeas-lenses bridge-utils cpu-checker dconf-gsettings-backend dconf-service dmeventd dmidecode dns-root-data
dnsmasq-base ebtables fontconfig fontconfig-config fonts-dejavu-core genisoimage gir1.2-freedesktop gir1.2-libosinfo-1.0 glib-networking
glib-networking-common glib-networking-services gsettings-desktop-schemas gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-x
gtk-update-icon-cache hicolor-icon-theme humanity-icon-theme ibverbs-providers ipxe-qemu ipxe-qemu-256k-compat-efi-roms libaa1 libaio1 libasound2

A headless server is probably missing all the usual packages for rendering GUIs, sound, and video, which is what half that stuff is.

11:48 PM
But why dozens of icon themes? libwayland-*? x11-common?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Because nested somewhere in there is a dependancy for a shoddy X11 GUI.

Ugh. I nuked my headless kvm set up last week

Honestly though, it's correct. Just press Y and wait.

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy yes

Hmm... I seem to have left my laptop power supply at work. :|

This is why when I have a job, I get two power supplies.

@CircusCat Same, I've used virt-manager GUI to connect to local and remote VM's, or to create VM's on a non-headless server and then connect to it from my PC.
@CircusCat Then forget two power supplies on your job.
