@bertieb How's your hand?
@ThatBrazilianGuy Hand is not bad thanks :) Going to wound clinic in an hour or so to have rest of stitches taken out
Then in a few weeks will have the pins taken out
How are you even typing now? Using the non-dominant hand?
11:25
Both hands, but only the three uninjured ones on right (mostly ring finger at that)
I could type with the other two, but the issue would be accuracy (the pins mean I hit other keys)
Nothing stopping me from trying tho!
@Bob @JourneymanGeek On Matrix: #rootaccess:roota.cc :P
feel free to federate to roota.cc:8448 (not sure if you have to explicitly do it or if joining it from your own homeserver would work)
The latter will work m
My home server needs setting up tho :p
@bertieb ah
i shouldn't tell you how a doctor left a stitch in my neck then
and I cut it out myself?
those of you who don't want to set up a home server can go to riot.im/app and sign in with a new account on the default matrix.org server, then join the room under "Room Directory" (paste in #rootaccess:roota.cc)
@djsmiley2k Jings :-\
Don't nurses normally take stitches out?
And (dare I ask) why did you have a stitch in your neck?
@allquixotic Matrix also seem accessible by weechat? I am intrigued and wish to subscribe to that newsletter
11:39
There's a plug-in
weechat, but not wechat :P
@allquixotic heh. Might be a bit. I might get it set up later if work is quiet.
Highly recommend weechat
I've been putting it off a bit sooooo no time like the present unless I have another day like Sunday
@bertieb photo incoming! ;D
11:43
it was a little frustrating, but not all that terrible, on Ubuntu 18.04
(also highly recommend having your own server in general, it's handy)
@allquixotic Aye, it's the IRC client I use. WeChat is some social network messaging thing? IDK, it's probably what the cool kids are using these days :P
@ToxicFrog not everyone has their own server
I had a sub...something cist
Thyroglossal cyst?
11:44
@bertieb mostly in China. Also acts as a payment system
on my neck, it got annoying due to rubbing on shirt collar
Submental cyst? Submandibular?
@JourneymanGeek Ahhh
@bertieb nah, this was just under the skin
Subdermal?
yah that sounds right
anyway, they took it out
stitched me up, etc.
11:46
no oneboxed pics please
medical stuff is a little disturbing to me :P
so of the 3 tech tests i've received today
none of them are 100%
@djsmiley2k looks like a chinese character
11:49
not sure if scar or chavvy tattoo....
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I haven't gotten mine set up yet
!!define chavvy
@allquixotic [chavvy](http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki?curid=178962) Of or pertaining to a chav or something that a chav might do or use.
Look at that chavvy top she's wearing! It's dreadful!
maybe if we try this awhile and everyone likes it, we can stick it in the room title :P not as "go here instead of here" but "go here if you want to hang out with us OoB"
it isn't a thing that requires invites, so should be good
11:58
Quite
@allquixotic trying to figure out how I'll connect
might have to use this
I don't want another web page open :/
@JourneymanGeek I realize that, but if it's an option, it's useful.
@djsmiley2k There's rambox as a communication consolidator, but I haven't used it yet; and I can't see the matrix logo
Ah, appointment soon, must dash!
12:14
I must dash too
@bertieb at work
so no new app either
so it's either via se chat, via irssi (irc client).
I may just install the IRC bridge on my home PC and try that.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic remind me to set up server/register ... uhh... in a week :P
I'm trying to limit myself to one project at a time
(which will inevitably fail)
I'm also running out of Greek deities to name my servers :P
@Bob There's Norse mythology to try.....
Bob
Bob
@RogUE I have that pantheon reserved for containers on a different server
:d
running out of greek deities?!
Bob
Bob
12:28
gaia hosts the greek containers; yggdrasil hosts the norse ones; amaterasu hosts the japanese ones
Nice. :)
Not Vahalla?
hopefully i'm about ot learn something
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k ...didn't even think of it
what about roman ones?
@Bob What about Vedic mythology? bit difficult to pronounce the names though :p
or hindu gods?
12:34
@Burgi That's what I said. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vedic_mythology
ah sorry
@Burgi like I said, might be difficult to pronounce the names.
Bob
Bob
@RogUE considered it before, but didn't feel like it at the time
I don't know much about the mythology :P
name the servers after planets in starwars
Bob
Bob
@Burgi I've already started naming a set (the local ones, actually) after gods and characters from mass effect :P
12:43
I hope you have exhausted the DC and Marvel comics characters as well.
Bob
Bob
I don't have that many...
also, those don't make for good names :P
also too much cross-over
"thor needs a reboot"
@Bob don't forget to set up server/register in a week!
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic lol
fine fine I'll do it now :P
hm, I need some music
12:52
:D
you're not working hard enough if you're able to do it now.
I don't care if it's the middle of the night there!

I swear there's far more spirits of Death, Doom and Destruction than anything positive :P
@JourneymanGeek help which one fits a matrix server :P
lol
the postgres conversion is failijg
hmm
they're greeks. They had too much booze and lead poisoning
Bob

@JourneymanGeek wasn't that the romans?

that might work
I already have two muses...
Creating erato
Starting erato

hm
my install seems borked
lemme try updating it, since its really old
then just seeing if I can do it from scratch
ugh
going to try reinstalling
I don't remember where anything is
14:29
@Bob Who's Gaia?
ugh.
@allquixotic running matrix now
I cannot for the life of me work out how to join a room

#rootaccess:roota.cc does not exist.
>_>
15:01
@JourneymanGeek what email did you sign up with? I'll invite you
That apparently happens "spuriously"
@allquixotic @geek:chat.lupinenet.com
federation works (tested it against matrix.org)
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic did you install from source or from package?
Package
Docker actually
rofl
each of us did it differently
Ok I invited your matrix id
I'm @allquixotic:roota.cc
Bob
Bob
15:09
soooooooooooooo
I installed synapse
I should have installed matrix-synapse
whoops
synapse is some weird gtk thing
synapse?
that's some kind of file indexer I think
Welp, there was a shooting in my neighbourhood yesterday evening apparently
(They missed, fortunately)
Oh no @bertieb
15:11
Seems like there's been a lot of them recently
Well, comparatively
Like 3 in the city
But thank goodness for XCOM rolls
Which is a lot
@Bob use docker-compose :D
@allquixotic Hah! If you read the description it really does seem like a "95% = miss" thing
See contrib/docker
Bob
Bob
gah
@allquixotic I'll be doing a proper deb package install :P
> Police said another car pulled up beside him in Kingsway Court at about 18:30 on Sunday and the occupants of the car discharged a firearm, narrowly missing him.
Lame. Docker is good once you get the hang of it

Bob
Bob
15:13
@allquixotic I don't feel like testing my luck with docker-on-debian-on-lxd-on-debian
General question about mobile phones. I don't know what part of the phone handles networking, but is it particularly prone to failure? The reason I ask is that it seems to have failed in one of my phones.
Bob
Bob
also I detest docker's syntax
used it to set up guacamole
never again.
Regular computer network cards last practically forever, so it's a little puzzling.
Docker on ubuntu 18.04 on lxd on ubuntu 18.04 is great
@FaheemMitha the wifi and LTE chips and antennae are generally separate - are both broken for you or just one?
@allquixotic Dunno. I can't connect to the mobile network very well. It sort of occasionally works. Very slowly.
15:15
@FaheemMitha and your wifi is fine or not?
No idea what piece is at fault. I'll probably buy another phone soon - then I'll try to see if it can be repaired.
@allquixotic Oh. Yes, wifi works, I think. It's the actual mobile phone network.
Could be antenna or cellular baseband or separate LTE chip or some PWM failure, or just software
@allquixotic Lots of possibilities. But is this a common issue?
Unless it's an iPhone (6 or newer) it probably won't be repaired because it's not worth the cost
@allquixotic It isn't. It's an Asus Zenfone 2.
15:17
@FaheemMitha depends on the phone, but board level issues are usually due to dust, impact or water damage
But stuff in India isn't that expensive to repair.
@FaheemMitha what up
Depends on the parts, I suppose.
@jokerdino Hi.
Check out iPad Rehab's videos on YouTube
Good stuff for understanding all that
@allquixotic Any particular one?
@allquixotic ok. All what? Networking on phones?
15:31
@FaheemMitha common repair issues and such, like the causes of most issues
And how to find and fix them
@allquixotic Ok. I usually outsource such things.
Right but it's good to be aware of it
ok, whos' an expert, on DHCP?
because what I just experienced doesn't make sense to me
(annoyingly wireshark is only showing me half the dhcp convo because reasons).
Firstly, after a dhcp server recieves DHCP Request which comes via a broadcast, how does it respond?
is it also via a broadcast?
@XKCD Fact checking, didn't always happen then, definitely doesn't always happen now.
Bob
Bob
15:53
ok
now I need to figure out how to connect to @allquixotic :P
@Bob oh I think you just type the room name/address into the room directory thing
Bob
Bob
> #rootaccess:roota.cc does not exist.
I'd check but the room was invite only so it didn't turn up
Bob
Bob
:(
lol
@allquixotic could I have admin rights please? ;p
I think we need to set up a few more things ;p
Bob
Bob
15:56
I have no idea if federation works :P
see if you can message me
Bob
Bob
uhhhh
@allquixotic apparently you need to set a room address
Bob
Bob
... how do I message you? :P
or gimme your username ;p
click on start chat?
16:53
/me ponders what this stuff is
oh matrix/synapse
What @allquixotic was talking about earlier
more or less a chat server system designed for people to run their own servers and federate
17:12
@Bob join #rootaccess:roota.cc - it's no longer invite only
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic still does not exist
17:32
@bertieb That's how it worked for the previous days, when there were multiple prizes. (5x Prize X = 5 drawings, 10x prize Y = 10 drawings). It says there's 10 drawings today (15,000 entries each) which is what makes me wonder if today's prize was supposed to be 10x but they made a typo.
Actually no, I'm wrong. Never mind.
Shrug. Costs me nothing to enter.

1 hour later…
18:40
@CircusCat nom
RA [Matrix] OoB chat: #ra:roota.cc All welcome!

ok i'm still confused as to teh steps.
riot.im is a hosted site I can get access via?
Yes you can use riot - see the second link in the pin
@djsmiley2k its a public server you can use to log ito the char

i will staunchly remain here being grumpy and rude to all-comers

We're breaking off?
@CanadianLuke nope
we just wanted a 'back up plan'
btw was there another 'blog' post?
as things seem to esclate randomly.
What are you talking about?
@rahuldottech I don't think alcohol was ever "meant" to be drunk but most of the world seems to enjy doing it
19:04
@CanadianLuke Someone troll-flags some message and then mods start rolling in and killing entire swaths of conversation and demanding asking everyone to change the subject - it really feels heavy handed, like a cop escalating against someone for crying out "owww!" for being struck by a billy club :P
It's been worse since the blog post
So we needed a backup :P
Which blog post??
Which blog post??
I feel like I'm learning about all these actions and events just now
19:09
Jay Hanlon on April 26, 2018

Let’s start with the painful truth:

Too many people experience Stack Overflow¹ as a hostile or elitist place, especially newer coders, women, people of color, and others in marginalized groups.

Our employees and community have cared about this for a long time, but we’ve struggled to talk about it publicly or to sufficiently prioritize it in recent years. And results matter more than intentions.

Now, that’s not because most Stack Overflow contributors are hostile jerks. The majority of them are generous and kind. Sure, a few are…  just generous, I guess? But our active users regularly express thei …

I totally support that blog post but not what has come of it for chat
So how about creating a new chat room for Super User on SE? Keep this one as the main one for the site, and have the second as a "non-official" room?
What about Discord?
They seem to be imposing similar / identical rules in non official rooms like JS as they do in official rooms like RA
And the flag system is still awful
Or Slack?
19:15
@CanadianLuke well we already have Gitter but I think we wanted something decentralized and closer to IRC. Decentralized so they don't complain to me when my server is down
Or Gittermost?
... Riot isn't letting me sign up either. It won't send my auth code to my phone
There are a lot of messenger apps out there with centralized servers but this one seemed to be a cut above the rest - E2E encryption option is nice
@CanadianLuke I used an email address and no phone number and it worked
Plus part of it was just that we wanted to stand up a (series of) servers for ourselves as a fun project, and now that we have them, we might as well use them
As long as at least one homeserver is up, it'll continue to work, even if my server goes down
And we have 3 so far
No permissions needed to federate it to another homeserver
...and just dusted out the desktop again.
It'll be trickier in the summer months as higher temperatures beget higher fan speeds and thereby more dust ingestion.
Keeping PCs clean is tricky.
@bwDraco live in a clean room?
Sadly, the room isn't all that clean. It's carpeted. Hopefully, replacement of the carpet with hardwood flooring will help (this is planned within the next few months).
Agh, dust gets everywhere
The liquid cooler radiator is the trickiest part to properly dust.
19:28
@bwDraco That's called the Hurricane-in-a-can
well thius thing isimply doesn't work :/

@djsmiley2k try again?
@djsmiley2k try again later, or register again but pick custom server at the bottom and put in roota.cc (so you get a direct connection rather than federated through matrix.org)
ewhtu
what u do?
D:
I should run my own home-server
cept I can't find a gentoo package for it atm
If it doesn't work reliably via matrix.org it's because matrix.org is a cluster of fairly unreliable systems IMHO
@djsmiley2k i installed it from pip
@JourneymanGeek nod
though I'm stuck with sqlite for now
I errr
think this thing is total uselessless?
19:38
Probably :P
But I got enough Linux servers that I could probably take over the Canadian hosting side of things :P lol
can we just do IRC plz D:
IRC is blocked at my work
:O
but here isn't @CanadianLuke?
I can run a web irc client for you.
we could probably throw in an IRC bridge at some point
19:39
@djsmiley2k No, cause it's the Stack Exchange network :P
@JourneymanGeek I haven't seen any that tie to an actual server.
@CanadianLuke your it is terriblew
if they can't make the distinction between chat.stackexchange.com, and everythingelse.stackexchange.com
@djsmiley2k We don't push the other techs to do things that block us. It's mainly when the ministry demands certain things get blocked
Option two - a single .txt file that we have to SSH into a random server to view/edit :-P
But seriously, why not something like Discord or Slack?
@CanadianLuke Dunno :/
IRC is fun tho
!!s/was/is/
19:42
@bertieb It is (source)
@djsmiley2k IRC dosen't have persistance
it does if you 8do it right xD
I'll bloody run a log bot and log everything for you :P
I just, this is rather overly complicated for something that was meant to be really simple
hell, ##rootaccess on freenode, or #rootaccess on quakenet or something, sorted.
it was just meant to be a way of me talking to you guys if things went bad.
@djsmiley2k Doesn't involve people setting up servers tho :P
weeeeellll
I half suspect that's part of the point
Also something something something Freenode spam, something something something life support (?)
19:50
:D
@bertieb nope, just applications which appear to not work :/
there's very little stopping someone from running their own irc server
Yah I could do that :D
19:51
why... why does this server only have a downlink speed of ~50 kBps
something's screwy
lol
so i signed up and it tells me my password in incorrect, then goes through
Still can't find the room tho lol
