@bertieb Me neither

Bob
@bwDraco yeaaaaaaa that doesn't help when your terminal is trapped inside
I'll probably have to revisit it for discourse sometime

12:02 AM
@Bob Looks like you made it work? Or not?

I bet nobody actually won and it's all a scam to steal everyone's personal details

Ah well, hopefully smiley or some of the friends and family I arm-twisted suggested try it won one
Hah :P

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy I didn't say it never worked, just that the path was painful :P

@CircusCat Won what?

12:11 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy you can borrow mine! I've been practically trying to give it away
24 GB of RAM, 2 x Xeon L5630, 2 x 500 GB HDD, comes with Ubuntu 18.04 installed in software RAID-1 with a btrfs / volume
it's somewhereintheUS and has giagbit

@ThatBrazilianGuy allq has an unused server to lend out. I haven't found a use for it, but if you need one, go ahead and ask for it.

@ThatBrazilianGuy yes
@bwDraco hell, you guys can share, if you agree on a container/virt tech to use and stick with it (to avoid conflicts with bridges and such).... would recommend LXD because Bob and I can help with config
even if you don't intend to use it now, @ThatBrazilianGuy can configure it so that all his meaningful workloads go under LXD, so if you change your mind later and want a piece of the server, he can make a container for you

Bob
12:30 AM
lol
@allquixotic's been offering a full dedi
I've been offering containers for years

@ThatBrazilianGuy either paste your SSH pubkey in here, or register on Matrix and join our channel and PM me... I probably need to PM you the IP address anyway.

12:48 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy TWSS

@CircusCat Bad cat, don't hiss at me!

Bob
@bertieb *poke*

Yea
Think something has gone screwy

darn, the only .wy TLD is .wy.us (Wyoming - probably official government stuff only, like .gov or .mil)
I was thinking scre.wy :D

@allquixotic I've sent you a FB message

12:58 AM
facebook? wtf? are we on that?
also why would you use that instead of ..............

If you prefer, I can send you an email.

just... nevermind :) I replied

Bob
lol
we now have so many chat protocols @allquixotic's forgotten a few :P

Lol
I actually had this one running the earliest

Bob
@JourneymanGeek for you superuser.com/questions/1324773/…
Please read through this unix.stackexchange.com/questions/399626/… and also we really don't recommend anyone using Kali Linux unless they know what they're doing. Beyond that, the answer provided is correct. — Darius 2 hours ago
thx. but in there....i cant find any answer for myself.. — danyal 40 mins ago

Lol. For aibobot

...and my hosting provider has deployed AMD EPYC. That one definitely came from left field.
Storage has been expanded on all plans, with larger instances getting more RAM and CPU as well.

Ping @allquixotic

They are still running older Xeons in their datacenters, though.
My main server got a Haswell Xeon; the other two got Broadwell. I wasn't lucky enough to get Naples on any of my servers.
Could be specific to the region, though.
All services are operating again as before, with no functional changes.

why?
@bwDraco how you been doing?

Very busy lately with housework.

Damn, my UPS was beeping every 15 seconds for nearly half an hour
Then it stopped for half an hour, and started again
And a red light labeled "building wiring fault" or something like that is on

@allquixotic how do you make that table?

2:34 AM

Uh... Nice knowing you too.

Q: Is it breach of contract if dismissed before starting work?

Luke StevensI'll just preface the question by apologising if it's worded poorly or this is the wrong site for it. I've recently been put in quite a difficult situation and was wondering what legal options there are for someone in this position; I've been dismissed by a company I was due to start a job with,...

@Ave someone's simultaneously a The Bridge chatter and a grpc contributor? like, a Googler?
oh is it Alexander Yee / Mysticial?

Ave
yes
it's murgatroid99 github.com/murgatroid99

huh.

Bob

As usual, new storage technology goes to the datacenter first, but only a matter of time before QLC reaches low-cost, high-capacity consumer SSDs.
I suspect such consumer QLC NAND SSDs would be marketed for read-mostly applications like games and media libraries.

@bwDraco the reduction in endurance per cell is probably somewhat made up for by having many more of them once you start getting into the 8 TB range (or at least cheaper 4 TB)

You still get 1,000 P/E cycles. 3D NAND technology has helped keep endurance sane.

with TLC 4 TB the endurance is high enough for common consumer workloads (where you're not wiping the entire drive every week, or even every month) that the general consensus is "you don't have to worry about endurance, period"
because the capacity is just so high, you have so many cells to work with
if QLC sacrifices some endurance for much reduced cost I'll still probably go for it... in high capacities
not ideal for a 256 GB system drive

Yup. It would not make sense for use as a boot drive unless it's at least 1 TB in size.

\o/
got my new cheapie line

4:12 AM
??

Ave
@bwDraco I'm not an expert but it looks good

Hard call, though. I'm not willing to throw that much money onto a monitor at this point.

Ave
oh wow, that's REALLY expensive

@allquixotic 8 dollars a month....
1000 minutes talktime, 1000 texts, 1gb of unthrottled data, unlimited data throttled to some extent
but its a MVNO off the same telco I normally use, and I'll get shitty speeds at work anyway

4:18 AM
Also, color management can be tricky. I'd prefer that all my games run on my primary monitor (for compatibility reasons), so I'd rather not have to reassign that. Some All of the color-managed programs I use are set up to rely on the "system" color profile, which may get confused if the program is running on something other than the primary monitor.
If I tell said color-managed programs to use a specific profile, they would have to be reconfigured every time a new profile is generated.

Yunnan Baiyao (or Yunnan Paiyao; simplified Chinese: 云南白药; traditional Chinese: 雲南白藥; pinyin: Yúnnán Báiyào; literally: "Yunnan White Drug") is a hemostatic powdered medicine famous for being carried by the Vietcong to stop bleeding during the Vietnam War. The medicine, developed by Qu Huangzhang in 1902, is designated as one of two Class-1 protected traditional medicines, which gives it 20 years protection. In China, its reputation is equal to that of penicillin in the U.S. It is founded and manufactured by a state-owned enterprise, Yunnan Baiyao Group (SZSE: 000538) in Yunnan, China. ==...
that reads like an advertisement o_O

Ave
yeah exactly

5:59 AM
@allquixotic Tagged accordingly.
Wow. Who knew the contents of a traditional medicine could be classified information?

@Ave since you mentioned the other day ^^

Ave
ooh, congrats!
it's still 99.9k on chat, but I suppose that'll update soon

6:29 AM
thanks :D

6:56 AM
@Sathya grats :)

7:24 AM
sooooooo wtf is with chrome 'blocking' downloads

@djsmiley2k thanks!

1 hour later…
8:40 AM
@djsmiley2k Weird...

@MichaelFrank yeah
tho actually that's happening at work and I was remoted into work, should of tried it locally LOL

My only guess is Chrome thinks the URL is malicious.

seems it maybe files with no extension.

8:52 AM
Woooo 4k

9:28 AM
ffs

uhoh @Burgi's back

FF is doing the same thing that chrome does when dealing with local .dev domains

that's because you never should of used them.

:)
never use local domains?

.dev isn't local
.local .example and a few others are.

9:30 AM
.local is a TLD
i was taught to use .dev at the turn of century

its because google bought the TLD .dev
> Google wants to use .dev for themselves.

10:00 AM
Anyone else seen this in the bottom of SU or other QA sites?

yes
its part of GDPR

10:16 AM
hmmm
I didn't think they could do automatic inclusion anymore
including 'by continuing you agree to x,y and z'
Maybe that's just for emails tho.

its legitimate business use
although GDPR is a fracking mess there are provisions in it for BAU

lol yah

10:59 AM
54.160.0.0/12 255.240.0.0
54.192.0.0/12 255.240.0.0
54.208.0.0/13 255.248.0.0
54.216.0.0/14 255.252.0.0
54.220.0.0/15 255.254.0.0
54.224.0.0/12 255.240.0.0
54.240.0.0/12 255.240.0.0
Who's good at subnetting?
Do me a favour, make that a single subnet ;D
@Burgi amuisingly I'm not seeing it :D

GDPR GDPR GDPR GDPR GDPR GDPR GDPR GDPR
And I don't even live in the EU

yup.

11:14 AM
Hey, Europeans? GDPR! GDPR? Hmm, ya, GDPR GDPR GDPR GDPR. GDPR, GDPR GDPR GDPR. GDPR...
5

you can thank us later
ideally in the latter part of 2019 when we can deny all knowledge and also blame europeans

LOL

Bob
@djsmiley2k 54.128.0.0/9?

@Bob thats a lot of addresses

Bob
@Burgi that's what you get when you want to "make a single subnet" of a bunch of subnets with huge gaps in the middle
good luck actually buying a /9 though

11:20 AM
wouldn't 54.160.0.0/9 be a little better?

@Bob that may work
haha not buying anything, they all ec2 ranges
just looking to simplfy the firewall rule.

knows nothing about subnetting

Someone please explain to me why it's cool for the US to have nuclear weapons but not any other nation?

Bob
@Burgi ...that's the same range

@Bob you had 128...
like i said i know nuffin'

Bob
11:22 AM
@Burgi yes, because 54.128.0.0 is the network address
the /9 containing 54.160.0.0 is the 54.160.0.0/9 subnet

hmmm
this is where it gets confusing

Bob
you can't just randomly pick a "start" address
draw it out in binary bits and it might be more obvious

you are going into deep networking that i don't understand

what bob said

i've never done subnetting

Bob
11:23 AM
with a /9 you have the subnet mask of 11111111 10000000 00000000 00000000
which means your network address can only have the first 9 bits
54.128.0.0 is 00110110 10000000 00000000 00000000
54.160.0.0 is 00110110 10100000 00000000 00000000
once you apply the mask (binary AND)...
  00110110 10100000 00000000 00000000
& 11111111 10000000 00000000 00000000
= 00110110 10000000 00000000 00000000

ok its a little clearer

@allquixotic GDPR in a nutshell?

Bob
another way of looking at it, with a /9 the last two octets of the network address must be 0. the second octet must be either a 0 or 128 (a 00000000 or 10000000)
any variation of the less significant bits are IP addresses inside a /9 subnet identified by the most significant 9 bits
@djsmiley2k if you want a range that covers all of them with no "gaps"...

I suspect the gaps maybe owned by amazon too
I'd just need to check

Bob
you can't really slim it down much
54.160.0.0/12
54.192.0.0/12
54.208.0.0/13
54.216.0.0/14
54.220.0.0/15
54.224.0.0/11
only the last two /12s can be aggregated

11:32 AM
@djsmiley2k are you in charge of blocking AWS for the russian government?

12:27 PM
@Bob turns out the connection off the myrepublic sim is... better.
which... makes no sense since its a MVNO of the other phone company I yse

1:19 PM
@rahuldottech more or less they had em first

Ok, looks like I managed to kill @allq's server with a single command.
Literally. 1st login, run 1st command, ooooops.
I should probably get an SE badge for it. "Server Slayer".

what server?

A spare one he had, not in prod (oh God I hope)
Just kidding. Def not prod.

What command?

@Ave you seen ouur other new hideout?

1:31 PM
minute silence

@Bob We have /16 at work. (That's 65k IPs), plus a few other thousand scattered here and there.
So I went to this student lab in a library and all 30+ PCs have public unproxied IPs
@ToxicFrog "reboot".
Ubuntu's MOTD said "restart needed".

Aah

Maybe I can give @ThatBrazilianGuy the KVM over IP info and he can remote in and figure out why it didn't boot

@Bob I'm trying to open it but the site says I'm not human.
And now it's giving me 403's

@ThatBrazilianGuy send me your email over fb
Or here if you don't care

Bob
1:41 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy a /9 is 128x bigger than a /16

Also I always knew you were a bot

1:52 PM
@Bob Well we have /16 and I think it's crazy and immense and who needs it all and admins get lazy and hand IPs like it's 1994... So who the hell owns a /9 and what for I can't even visualize it
@allquixotic 1 sec

@allquixotic why do you even still have an FB account?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Amazon, nearly

@rahuldottech Dunno about other places but here not having FB and WhatsApp accounts is like social suicide.
Everyone talks to each other via WhatsApp, and I mean everyone, people don't email each other at work (unless it's for a boss or something), they sand WhatsApp messages, families don't text use WhatsApp
And Facebook is for keeping tabs on what's going on with acquaintances.
People don't call others to invite for social activities, they post on Facebook. At least it's my experience.
Or maybe no one actually likes me and I'm an IRL NPC. Who knows.

@Bob What I reeeeeeally hate is the need to have a phone on at all times to use WhatsApp. And the need to give your phone number out to others. And you move cities and how do you keep your "username". And...
AAAAAH WHATSAPP SUCKS ABOUT NEARLY EVERYTHING.
OH how could I forget. WhatsApp storage is your phone storage.

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy dw, I hate it for the exact same (literally. the reliance on phone and tie to phone number.) reasons
there's probably half a dozen rants in transcript :P

And the storage. Phones in a third world country are comparatively MUCH more expensive and objetively have shitty specs, including storage.
Guess what is also super ultra common on third world countries? IM chains with videos and gifs and images and good morning messages with gifs and videos and famili groups with gifs and videos and... you get the idea.

I need whatsapp for work
ugh

I've more than once seriously considered running WhatsApp on an emulated Android KVM session of a remote server.

2:19 PM
I used to run it on a spare phone so it wouldn't kill my battery

A friend kept sending me prospective freelancing clients who, like every other Brazilian, seem to only be able to converse via whatsapp. So I bought a new SIM chip and registered it and used it to talk business, running on an emulated android on my PC.
But I forgot to periodically turn on the actual phone and ended up losing the number.

In all those years, of all the multiple dozen referred prospective clients I had been sent, literally one ended up using my services so no big loss.

oh man

Nearly every prospective client interaction I've ever had:
Them: "Hey do you make sites"
Me: "Yes, I do, what do you need, send me details"
Them: *poof*

2:25 PM
one big thing I would look forward to when I get a proper non contractor job is...
no more whataspp
job -4 used jabber, job -3 used the MS thing

@JourneymanGeek Well. Yeah. Good luck doing that in Brazil. It's like saying we're a restaurant and no more landline phones, or like saying we're a TV network and no more advertising.

this job has skype for business but no one uses it
@ThatBrazilianGuy heh, I can dream? ;p

If I was ever a team lead I'd settle for a single mean of communication (agreed by every member, ofc)

@ThatBrazilianGuy I think SE uses SE chat and hangouts mostly

Specially one that doesn't force you to have an extra functioning device.
When phone-1 broke I spent 6 months + without a proper phone, and boy people really do expect you to have WhatsApp.
Twice or thrice I arrived to a locked door at work. "But we told everyone on WhatsApp".
Once I was part of a project and every detail was discussed over WhatsApp.
Which I didn't have and alerted the team lead (who is my current boss btw)

2:29 PM
ya

"Oh there will be no issues, things will work out". Yeah.

that's basically my current job
actually its a little worse than that but public chat ;p

Other thing I really hate is online ettiquete in Brazil seems to be a lost art.
So you have a work group one would expect work-related questions and announcements
But you get jokes, gifs, good mornings, people selling stuff...

oh man
our family whatsapp group is like that

Thankfully I don't have it that bad because my family is small and quiet
And because my coworkers use something that is as bad as whatsapp:
The "Hey can you come here just a sec" protocol.
It's really disruptive and has no logs. Two terrible anti-features.

2:35 PM
hah
I use whatsapp logs at work

As in "send this chat log to your email as text"?

no, literally searching on the phone

Terrible UX; if phone dies or app corrupts you lose the logs, etc.

it actually backs up and restores cleanly

Well yeah, I forgot about the integrated Google Drive backup.

2:56 PM
has anything changed recently?

@RogUE GDPR
more or less its just a legal requirement

Oh, it's about the Europeans.

Banner is now live for all users. We’ve organized all the legal bits under https://stackoverflow.com/legal/ and GDPR SAR request forms will go live later this week.

3:32 PM
EU citizens should say "I'm a GDPR. spam Check meowt!"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek what happened to the planned arbitration opt out form?

@Bob for now you can email or write in
I know roughly as much as you guys

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, but they mentioned a form :P

6-8 weeks? ;p
I donno
cough Its not like I have a massive inside track here

3:54 PM
@Bob yeah, I want that!
@JourneymanGeek there's a deadline...

@jokerdino You know exactly as much as I do!
but I'm pretty sure Tim said on meta they may be flexible about the opt out

yeah, I would like that.

@JourneymanGeek @jokerdino let me ask you something

maybe so

did you guys give SE any personal information like address, real-name etc before becoming mods?

3:57 PM
nope
they have my address from swag shipments

only for getting swag

likewise my real name
(so the postie won't get confused)

you have the option to refuse to divulge info

SE's happily shipped stuff to Journeyman Geek before.

got any images of the swag?

4:13 PM
mostly T shirts
though I have one of the 2 SE hoodie designs
(there's SU one, and there used to be an employee one)

1 hour later…
5:16 PM
I actually have a Stack Overflow T-shirt from the #SOreadytohelp sweepstakes.
Aug 28 '15 at 20:50, by DragonLord
Guess what? @abbyhairboat (via email) selected me as one of several winners of the #SOreadytohelp sweepstakes!

5:44 PM
I have... 2 black 1 white one win 8 su t shirts, SF so se (I May have 2 I forget) and auto shirts. And the SU mglug

@bwDraco luckyyy

I have zero SE swag - I'm an unremarkable person/user

oh lord what have I done...

what is that

5:59 PM
Apparently he has a game where he's designated a dwarven child as an animal ready for the slaughter
Imagine a dwarf going "muuuuu!"
Store sells dwarf steaks

hmm
don't get gilled @dj

gilled?

6:13 PM
Can I get a definitive answer on the migration of my TempleOS questions?
That's what the Stack Exchange employee wants to do, and I'd rather not ask them here because it's somewhat disrespectful to those that took part answering them.
Not many people took part in the conversation. meta.superuser.com/questions/13082/questions-about-temple-os
And I never got a response on it.

6:29 PM
I think my answer more or less counts as official

Ave
@allquixotic I won a SO shirt as part of that one 10m question thing
...and I forgot to reply to the email
I could have a shirt, I don't
:/

I got a mod hat for Freelancing.SE
But I want SU swag :(

@EvanCarroll i didn't understand the question

7:04 PM
@Burgi How do you feel?
!!say @Burgi How do you feel?

@Burgi How do you feel?

7:43 PM
You're supposed to say. "I do not understand the question."

7:59 PM
I do not understand the question.

@rahuldottech yyy

1 hour later…
9:21 PM
I got STP working :-D Sweetness!

Yay!
You... uh, Stopped The Postman?
