@Bob I tried to find an appropriately cute gif of a flower girl dropping the petals one at a time, but I did not have any luck.

@MichaelFrank she might be the only one on her shift? ;p
.....
So I'm looking at domains for something silly I want to do
I think I will never own a local domain

Those instructions are very specific...

Bob
lol
yea, I'll probably never have a .com.au
a .id.au is possible but very much meh

lol
I just realised you can register fooco.in

Bob
> .ASN.AU - associations, political parties and clubs
O_O
I've literally never seen a .asn.au

3:17 AM
If I ever decide to start my own cryptocurrency (Wauzercoin) it would be useful to know

Bob
and almost never seen a .id.au, come to think of it

@MichaelFrank well, you literally need singpass for anything official
and er.
I'm not really a fan of a great big universial online identity?

Bob
> Domain names ending in .id.au must be registered by an individual for personal use only. They must derive of the registrant?s name, or a nickname by which they are commonly known.
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooope
not touching that

lol
"nickname they are commonly known"

Bob
hm actually

3:20 AM
How do you even verify that?

Bob
idk
does my github account count

@Bob "bob.id.au"?

Bob
@CircusCat you really think that's not taken yet? :P

> This site can’t be reached
bob.id.au’s server IP address could not be found.
Did you mean http://www.bok.id.au/?
Search Google for bob id au

@Bob oddly enough...

Bob
3:28 AM
... ... O_O
brb

I mean, you might not get it due to other reasons but...

Bob
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
cause I actually have this guy trying in 2007 forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/755788

@Bob some places don't allow 3 letter domains

Bob
namecheap doesn't support id.au lol
godaddy ... eww

3:31 AM
> O.P.
I just received a response from AusRegistry and they have no problem with my domain name. For what it's worth I have little interest now so this is what I was applying for: twobob.id.au
It was a nickname given to me by a workmate because I had the exact same name (including middle) as another employee. Anyone who has worked in the Top End will know about nicknames and how they stick :-)

Bob
wild west domains sounds horribly dodgy

sounds like his domain host was dodgy
amazon? Google?

Bob
not supported
hmmmmmm
domain privacy not allowed on .au domains
blech

Yea, .nz domains are similar, but they do allow you to protect your address and phone number.

@Bob He was after twobob.id.au, which is still available also, cause he couldn't be bothered in the end.

Bob
3:36 AM
:\
I wonder if it was historically registered

It's not like they're going to arrest you for trying.

Bob
really hard to believe no one's tried lol
I should register my surname
first@last.id.au is a nice address

@Bob If you don't, I will.

Bob
@CircusCat you'll need to move here first! :P

Netregistry apparently want to sell me it for £10.98/yr

3:38 AM
@CircusCat you arn't a bob
you arn't even a bobcat

Bob
and change your name, probably

!!s/bab/bob/

@MichaelFrank That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

someone do the thing...

@MichaelFrank and change your name, probobly (source)

3:38 AM
yus

as opposed to antibobly?

@Bob But we all know you as Bob!

Bob

wait, he's the CEO?
I do have a website on Net-Virtue though ... hmmm
> Now, if you want to edit your zone records, you get '10 free changes' per year — any more and you have to pay extra for a 'domain manager' product.
lol wtf

@Bob if you register bob.id.au I'll pay the registration fees for you, just for the lolz. It's like $20 a year
I mean, it seems so simple you just have to try it!
Ooh if I move to Aus would I be able to register qasdfdsaq.id.au?
Actually why would I, I already have qasdfdsaq.com

Bob
@CircusCat lol, fees aren't the problem
idk how much of my details will be exposed

3:48 AM
@Bob Wouldn't that be true of any .au domain, including lastname.id.au?

Bob
ya

Well if you're going for lastname you might as well go for bob as well. Even if only to camp it and sell it to the next Bob who comes along and wants it more.
Or just use your grandma or Uncle Bob's details

I have roota.cc now, but I failed to set up Synapse -- too many random errors and things not working as documented

I think we have a similar rule for .uk addresses btw, in that at least your full name has to be exposed.
Private customers can elect to hide their address, though mine would be 5 years out of date now anyway.

We have the same here in NZ. You need to manually request it to your registrar though.

3:54 AM
Oh hey, my joke website hasn't been hijacked or hacked, that's good...

I'm sure there's like fifty critical patches I'm missing... good job it's a low traffic site.

Bob
@CircusCat Yea, I'm going to register it. As soon as this SNAFU is sorted, anyway...
(put in wrong email address, one I didn't want exposed. tried to change it. now the domain is pending, invoice unpaid, and ticket submitted...)

Bob
@CircusCat someone had com.com.au and caused no end of troubles
google.com was being resolved to google.com.com.au ...

4:04 AM
Someone also had life.id.au, whose name is pretty much identical to mine with two swappped letters...

Bob
technically they're not even supposed to be able to register it
according to auDA and ICANN rules

@Bob Hah, I would love to be the cause of such troubles

Bob
and auDA took a month to respond to my email (... by letter?) ... they got the squatter to remove the wildcard
bah, the whole domain should be revoked

What exactly was responsible for resolving google.com as google.com.com.au though? Overzealous browser predictions? Dodgy nameserver wildcarding?

Bob
@CircusCat browsers were fine; presumably they do a FQDN lookup
they had a wildcard on *.com.com.au
which confused the Windows resolver (for ping, etc.) when you're on a computer joined to an AD domain on company.com.au

4:07 AM
@Bob ah

Bob
cause Windows would try all the suffices ... google.com.company.com.au., google.com.com.au., google.com.au., google.com..
guess which one hit first?
course it works if you ping with a FQDN
but this is the entire reason ICANN put out that policy saying no common suffices should be allowed

@Bob Isn't Google.com a fqdn already? Or do you mean someone doing ping google

Bob
@CircusCat ping google.com is not using a FQDN. ping google.com. is.
without the terminating ., the suffix search starts

@Bob :-o

Was wondering why my DSLR keeps giving me focusing problems. Turns out the AF sub-mirror is delaminating.

Q: Data Directory Specifics

International_TomatoSo I have been following this guide and it says the following:   "*** Replace "/YOUR/DATA/DIRECTORY" in the command with your actual data directory (Ex: /media/amnesia/1TBExternalDrive/bitmonero) This is where the blockchain will be downloaded. "   However I have no idea how to figure out the i...

trying to decide if I should close this, or to answer it in the spirit of "oh we should be nice to new users"

Beneath the reflex mirror on a DSLR is a small sub-mirror used to redirect light to the AF sensor. That mirror is somehow delaminating on my camera.

Or both

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...I think it's technically on-topic
it's also not unclear, not opinion-based, and not particularly broad

4:14 AM
Its a RTFMAAS answer

Bob
so it really shouldn't be closed
@JourneymanGeek ehhhhh...
idk, some people need a bit of hand-holding? :P
there's actually some research effort here

> As per the guide > Before you start you need to have TAILS with a persistent volume and administrator password set up and a minimum of 20 GB free space to download the blockchain (I recommend a seperate USB/HDD for this).

Bob
all in, it's actually a pretty good question, taking into account the apparent knowledge of the asker
@JourneymanGeek then they didn't get the link between "data directory" and "a place with 20 GB free space"
that would make a good answer, no?
hm. though not particularly reusable...
eh.
it's like a SO question that ends up being due to a typo

Fine, answered.

Bob
nothing technically wrong with the question, just a minor oversight ... which isn't really useful to future users but ... again nothing really wrong
bleh.
brb, dropping tables
3

4:18 AM
(I have a mental image of a fox nosing tables off a high building)

Bob
so I just spent three hours adding a primary key to 6 million rows of data
since you can't alter tables to add primary keys in sqlite
so you have to copy the data out, create a new table with the correct column, and copy it back in
which takes a while

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ... ok maybe this person is beyond help (on Q&A anyway; chat maybe)

I'm going to shoot Ricoh Imaging a Tweet.

@Bob why not just copy it straight into a new table with the correct column, leave it there, and rename it back if whatever uses it can't be reconfigure to use the new table?

Bob
4:28 AM
@CircusCat because the copy operation is fast anyway and the slow bit is dropping the old table
idk how or why

@Bob :-|

Bob
oh, actually I do know
the temp table would've ended up on a tmpfs
so, ramdisk
the main db is on ... a hdd

But don't you have to drop the new temporary table if you're copying it back? shrug
Ah.
drop table hdds;
Sorry, lost all the HDDs! Need to buy SSDs to replace them.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm pretty sure they're just copying the path verbatim and not using their own locally mounted path ... needs an intro to CLI :P
@CircusCat if you can find a server with a 1 TB (or at least 500 GB) SSD for <20 EUR/month... lemme know :P

@PENTAXIAN: I found what appears to a design flaw in the mirror assembly on Pentax DSLRs which can cause autofocus to eventually fail. The AF sub-mirror can delaminate over time, causing inconsistent focusing. Any help would be appreciated. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/172-pentax-k-3/366442-af-sub-mirror-delamination-causing-inconsistent-focusing-anyone-else-affected.html

4:34 AM
@Bob oh this is a personal thing not a work thing?

Bob
@CircusCat yas

@Bob in which case, Holy crap what on earth are you databasing that's got 6 million rows? Is this like some sort of record of every tab you have ever opened in Firefox? 😁

Bob
@CircusCat lol, that'd probably be bigger
it's a metadata database for ~300 GB (extracted) of stories

5:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek Those blue dots, what are they?
They look beautiful.

@RogUE that's @bwDraco's camera. I was sighing for something else ;p

That's my main work camera. Looks like a nasty design flaw to me.
1 hour ago, by bwDraco
Beneath the reflex mirror on a DSLR is a small sub-mirror used to redirect light to the AF sensor. That mirror is somehow delaminating on my camera.

Also what's beautiful to one is ugly to another
@Bob .... I think his actual issue is the lack of a space.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That "a" is very important :P

also
I completely don't get how that command even works
but its failing in a way consistant with it working
DNS_PUBLIC=tcp TORSOCKS_ALLOW_INBOUND=1 torsocks ./monerod --p2p-bind-ip 127.0.0.1 --no-igd --rpc-bind-ip 127.0.0.1 --data-dir /YOUR/DATA/DIRECTORY

Bob
5:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek you prolly need to @ him in your reply

Like, is he setting a pair of environmental variables, then running tosocks, then running monerod... on the same line?

Bob
cause my comment means he's no longer auto-pinged

naw, OP always gets notifications

Bob
@JourneymanGeek OP of the post commented on ... which is you, not the question asker
@JourneymanGeek ...yeeeeeeeeeeeeeees?

now if only I had unlimited edit rights on a comment...

Bob
5:36 AM
it's not so much setting the envvars as it is passing them into a single command

and does torsocks do the ./monerod?

Bob
I guess?

That's like the strangest way to give a command I have ever seen

Bob
> Especially Germans are really skilled in screwing you over paperwork (Disclaimer: I know because I am from Germany).
@JourneymanGeek presumably torsocks is a wrapper that forces the invokee to be socked

@bwDraco Wouldn't they repair that free of cost if the device is still under warranty?

5:38 AM
It's out of warranty.

Now I need to work out what that abomination of a command line does, since its literally setting two environmental variables, running an executable... then running another executable (how???? - maybe torsocks has a thing for invoking another command) ... then passing it on some arguements. Anyway, in future, if you have a completely different problem, feel free to post it as a new question — Journeyman Geek ♦ 31 secs ago
That proved interesting, even if I was answering a completely different question

Bob
yea it's a wrapper for the invokee

sorted
...
that was a completely unexpected rabbithole to fall into

6:40 AM
I think I found something worthy of a Firefox bug report.
One of the common website suggestions (which are provided even if you've never visited the site before) returned by the Awesome Bar is a pirate content site.
I'm not in a mood to reset the password on the (now locked) Yahoo account used for my Bugzilla account right now.

piratebay? ;p

No, Primewire.

ah. Never heard of it
oh well
I suspect its more due to the search engine than the browser

No, not a search suggestion. This happens in a private window.

hm
still has to come from somewhere no?

7:07 AM
...and passwords reset on the accounts affected, catching up on old mail.
Thunderbird reconfigured for the new passwords. We're good to go again.
Bugzilla happens to be one of the few things that don't use my main personal email account because the email address is publicly displayed.
Sep 23 '16 at 14:22, by bwDraco
Historic Yahoo breach from late 2014 discovered—conside‌r changing passwords if you haven't done so recently
My main email account had its password reset fairly quickly, but the other two accounts I maintain were neglected. Yahoo eventually locked those accounts out against email clients like Thunderbird.
Dec 17 '16 at 19:25, by bwDraco
My accounts appear to be unaffected, but Yahoo will be issuing a hard password reset across all accounts soon.
And that's what happened—a hard password reset.

Bob
7:24 AM
@bwDraco soooo... what's a soft password reset?

lol

"Escuse me good sir. We've noticed that your password was compromised. Would you kindly change it?"
reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/8kyvkg/… ow. (not actually NSFW other than language)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oof. yeaaaaaaaaaaaa... I would say that's more a reason to not even consider touching google in enterprise than anything else

@Bob on the other hand
email's one of those things that's kinda high maintainance to run on your own

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, microsoft's calling... or any number of other email providers really
google's big, sure, but if they're going to pull this kind of shit...
they're unreliable

7:37 AM
@Bob its MS, google or... your domain registar I guess

Bob
I've been sloooooooooooooowly trying to migrate off gmail for a while now

eh
I have too much tied into that and my current number ._.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek zoho, amazon...

amazon does mail?

Bob
yea, aws
that's assuming this thing's real, though

7:43 AM
That's true
and/or there wasn't other circumstances in play

Bob
if a company with 100+ users doesn't have proper support, that's super screwy
like, that's the company size that should have an account manager and a phone number to call
oh look, someone in the comments confirmed, gsuite admins should have a phone number to call

@Bob though, he's not the admin
and companies can be a bit... disfunctional

Oh wait, SSD? :/
yah gl with that.

Bob

@djsmiley2k lol
this is what happens when you over-automate
@djsmiley2k huh, ovh does ARM now? that said, Cortex A9 sucks
1 GHz 2core Cortex A9 would be painfully slow

oh, it's a storage-focused server...
yea I need some compute too :P

or a bad pun

@Bob yah, they huge storage, cheap server.
'huge'

I submitted it with 8 hours on the 1st. Rejected. I assumed it was cause it was a holiday. Resubmitted with it as 0. Got rejected for that.
Like... I think the guy who checks them is simply messing with me...

lol
go find him, growl at him.
@JourneymanGeek word of advice, keep a private copy, at home or somewhere safe (i.e. not on work systems).
@Burgi sup

@djsmiley2k waiting for it to be approved
then I'll screenshot it and email it over to the folks who pay my salary, keeping a copy of it.
I still have a few days before I need to send it in so \o/
also its a big company so...
eh

8:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek yah
but I'd keep a personal list of what you've worked
because if anyone questions it, you don't ever want to find you can't show what you worked from your personal records.

got that too.

9:11 AM
:)
When i transferred between departments, I had to 'prove' I was owed a days holiday.
tbh they were really good about it, because they liked me.

ah lol

But they could of made a right fuss.

wow... one of the "completed" tech tests i was sent....
the guy is asking for £28k...

the sticky nav is transparent and therefore clashes with the text

@CircusCat Good luck! 🤞

Looks like a typo in today's sweepstakes, as there's 10 drawings but "1x" prize. Hope you got the bonus tickets from my referral.

I did, +1 ticket thanks :)

Aww only 1? That's stingy.
And you have to refer like 18 people to get a free shipping token... Pfft

Aye, but better than nothing I guess!

10:16 AM
@bertieb true

10:41 AM
@CircusCat Huh, the sweepstakes entries counter just ticked over- I thought at 15000 it would be full, but it was at ~14k, and now it's showing just under 2k
A bit misleading if you ask me
Also is it just me or has the countdown timer gone up as well?
(3 in 15000 is already pretty low odds; 3 in <some multiple of 15000> is, uh, even lower)
Ah I see, each of the 10 dealies counts as a separate drawing?
My brain has just gone into 'refuse to figure out the probability' mode

@bertieb I'd presume it hits 15,000, does a 'draw', and starts again.

@djsmiley2k Aye, sounds likely!
