Bob
12:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...you don't have a hat

Am so totally rocking a hat. It's a modly hat...

Bob
Huh, I thought you already ate that one :P

12:11 AM
Naw. That is the santa hat
@bwDraco I also like em as a backup

So, your thoughts on Ryzen 3?
I think they'll work well for entry-level gaming desktops.

Bob
Eh. Depends. It's still a rec for many games (especially the competitive Source-based ones) to go for single-thread perf wherever possible. One of the Pentiums was recommended for quite a while for overclocking potential.

Off-the-cuff Ryzen 3 1300X build:
PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8fyhcc
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8fyhcc/by_merchant/

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 3 1300X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($140.45 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI - B350M GAMING PRO Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($71.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($85.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($104.75 @ Newegg)
Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB SC GAMING ACX 2.0 Video Card ($158.98 @ Newegg)
$800 basic gaming PC for eSports and light AAA gaming.
(less than $700 if you exclude the Windows license)
Good quality parts selected, nothing truly bottom-bin. 80 PLUS Gold PSU, 8 GB of fast DDR4 RAM, proven Samsung SSD.
CPU cooled using the stock Wraith Stealth thermal solution.
I kinda think storage is the weakest link in this build, with only 250 GB.
Just a thought.

12:32 AM
Eh. Just throw in a cheap 1tb spinning rust drive
I've found 250gb is enough for an os drive and splitting/tiering storage is handy when you back up

12:44 AM
There's not an awful lot of room to cost-optimize this build...
Swapped out SSD and case to save a few dollars, then added a recent-model 1 TB 7k rpm hard drive:
PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xWBCXH

Storage: Crucial - MX300 275GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate - BarraCuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($48.98 @ Amazon)
on a build like this, even 25 GB of extra SSD storage can make a difference. Micron exploits the high storage density of IMFT 3D TLC NAND to add a bit more capacity, and the MX300 is generally considered to be a good performer.
The whole system is also smaller.

Another English exam today...

heh. tbh, that looks remarkably like how I'd build a NAS. Assuming I didn't get an off the shelf one.

AMD has virtually no place in the market, and it's not even clear if AMD's strategy of betting the farm and spending every last dollar it has on R&D of next-gen tech will actually pay off.

@JourneymanGeek we have a bunch of minosos now :S
where'd that happen

> The Archive does not generally use tape technology, having run into the classic "whoops, no tape drive on earth reads these any more" and "whoops, this tape no longer works properly".
archiveteam's wiki is hilarious

=)
we aim to please?

Bob
@djsmiley2k heh, you part of em?

from almost the very start
Now I do very little
as no free time and no spare b/w
The soundcloud stuff is... :/
I'm guessing that's how come you're reading it now

Bob
6:35 AM
@djsmiley2k actually, no. what's the soundcloud stuff? o.O
I first heard of them over the twitch.tv vod stuff, wanted to get involved but didn't have time

we/they started archiving soundcloud, because shutting down.
oh, twitch was fun

Bob
now... looking at it again
@djsmiley2k wait what

posterious or whatever it was, was better
well now it's 'not shutting down, within 80 days'
so... maybe 90 days? :D
The funny bit is the strissland effect has happened
soundcloud asked us to stop, because uncertainties surrounding copyright on the stuff on there, or something
so instead, a group of redditors started grabbing it all...

Bob
lol
@djsmiley2k My main concern with helping is, well, I don't really have a consumer/residential IP to do it from.
Plenty of server IPs but some sites block those

that's fine
we have blockdetection stuff, if you're blocked, you won't screw anything up
it will just not archive.
we provide a vbox vm to run, or you can run the scripts manually yourself
If you happen to have lots (Multi-TB) of space spare, we can use you too as a dump for content

Bob
7:08 AM
@djsmiley2k Heh. I have lots of spare space (~20 TB) ... on the poor connection.

thay maybe ok if you can let them borrow some.

Bob
The good connections only have 10 GB - 200 GB - 2 TB space.

it all depends what projects on going at the time

Bob
I'm not donating space out of that 20 TB, cause it'd absolutely kill the connection it's on :\

Bob
7:15 AM
> Dropbox for Business Advanced is currently billed at $20 per user per month, with a minimum of 3 users, for "as much as you need" storage. They'll probably get cranky as we near 50/100TB though.

@Bob lol

Bob
> Note: New nodes are not being accepted right now. (as of July 2016)
:( @djsmiley2k

@Bob why :(?
Oh, because you can't sign up for dropbox business?

Because "as much as you need" usually is not expected to be 50-100 TB.

I'm wary of clickign the link in superuser.com/questions/1235316/…

7:24 AM
You could ask Microsoft about that.
@djsmiley2k looks like a normal cPanel page, though images are data:

Bob
@djsmiley2k because archivebot isn't accepting new nodes

for... anything?!
/me will have to check what's going on tonight via the IRC

Bob
@djsmiley2k idk, just what the wiki says!

@Bob hmmm the wiki is a little off sometimes
Oh right, Archivebot
yeah, that's an IRC controlled bot that does crawls on demand
You want to run a vm?

Bob
@djsmiley2k I'm not entirely sure what I want to do right now :P

7:32 AM
Search for archiveteam warrior

Bob
reading up on ... stuff
@djsmiley2k oh, as for why...
oracle.

@Bob part of the problem is education
you're helping, by learning :D

@djsmiley2k It's clean

@DavidPostill I didn't even think about that.

They can also scan URLs? Hmm really didn't know about that.

7:38 AM
@Seth Yep. Useful :)

ok
that windows XP end of support post... what?
and it's gone

morning

sup

@DavidPostill no but i was stuck in the traffic caused by the police cordon

7:50 AM
ah
was gonna say last night, it say the incident was at like 13:30?

i think they caught him at about 5pm

urgh

what gets me is that he stole the crossbow from a shop
what sort of shop stocks fracking crossbows?

cc @Bob @ThatREDACTEDGuy @Boris_yo
can't remember which of you were discussing youtube red and google music with me lately ;D

A sports good shop or something maybe?

7:55 AM
This one? XD

i don't think we have those here
@djsmiley2k i think i read somewhere that google has "secretly" launched a 3rd mobile OS
> Archery World, Airfield Approach, Moor Lane
are they trying to shoot down the planes with arrows?

Depending on the bow that would probably be possible.
And depending on the plane ...

oooh they are nextdoor to the cartmel sticky toffee pudding factory
@Seth i can't see any on the runways...

Having a contest between archers and drone pilots could be fun. How long can your drone evade the arrows? Though, thinking about the drone taken down by spear video probably means it would be a rather short contest.

he looked quite pissed off

Bob
8:03 AM
@djsmiley2k neither can I :P

@Burgi sports shops? Now if it was a longbow...

we don't have american style "sports" shops in the uk

You probably have some kind of "this is stuff for people that hunt" kind of shop and cross bows are generally not handled like firearms.

they tazered the guy
and they had police with machine guns chasing him....
i have to admit the bit when he got zapped in the video made me laugh

8:28 AM
@Burgi I bet the americansa were like 'shoot him, shooot him!!!'

8:38 AM
Would they really say that? Wouldn't it "Why wasn't he shot yet?" be more likely?
Could someone finally make Intel announce Coffee Lake please? :/

How do you "fix" broken references on Wikipedia. Like, can you just flag a broken link or something?

Replace it with a working reference if it's available? Otherwise maybe mention it on the discussion page. That would be my approach.

The link-rot on Wikipedia is extensive
Whenever I click a reference, there is decay

@Burgi fuchia

That's the web for you since there SEO became a thing or something. The advantage of book references. Those usually remain the same - if you're able to get your hands on the book.

8:52 AM
ask @FleetCommand, he is a regular top wiki editor

@OliverSalzburg link to archive.org version?
:/
@Seth so..... basically the same then?

@djsmiley2k Meh. I wanted to offload the actual work to someone else :P Now I fixed the ref

not able to access the website, is pretty much the same as not able to access the book
@OliverSalzburg hmmmm :D

And the quote...

@OliverSalzburg and the whole dang page?

8:54 AM
@djsmiley2k Not yet :D

:D
what's it on, anything good?

It's MS MVP page
According to Microsoft, Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award is given to "technology experts who passionately share their knowledge with the community." The awarded are people who "actively share their ... technical expertise with the different technology communities related directly or indirectly to Microsoft". An MVP is awarded for contributions over the previous year. The MVP program grew out of the software developer community, as the initial MVPs were some of the most active on the online peer support communities such as Usenet and CompuServe. It has since grown to include other...

Yes @djsmiley2k but books usually have a longer lifetime than web pages (depending on the kind of page). Oh and I certainly feel like that since SEO became a thing that pages break more often. Especially if they strip IDs from their URLs and instead rely on e.g. the title of a blog article for access.

yeah, that stuff sucks
but... books lasting longer.
true, but also can be far harder to access.
and index

Reminds of the Google Digitization project and the data that has been generated by it that might still be kept somewhere.

9:04 AM
it is kept somewhere
google book search

Which is way different from the original intent

@Seth This is basically what powers Jason Scott.
the fact people who appently work for educating.... (libarians etc) would do something like this.
I wonder if someone, some day, will do the google leak project
where this kind of info just.... leaks out
I'm sure Sergy and Brin would be approving...
sadly not so much shareholders.

Oh~ textfiles.com, yeha really cool project as well.

@Seth Glorious leader of Archiveteam

Sounds like the Opening of the (not quite so bad) TRON 2.0
Sorry I'm not that invested in Archive though I really, really appreciate their work.

You mean textfiles? Yeha.
Or, if you meant Archive, yeha, they're awesome as well. :D

@djsmiley2k Eeeeew. It's gone.
I hope you weren't too traumatised.

I'm at work, fortunately I was already wariy as it seemed a odd way to link a image as an answer.
I've seen worse.

11:06 AM
I'm trying to find out if there is a policy for nuking those kinds of images ...

'instant and utter nukage' ?
Hahahahahahahaha
that moment someone comments on my answer saying 'that's not what they asked'
and the asker immediately comments on the question, refining it to what I've answered.

@djsmiley2k Oh, dear our obscene poster is back (and really doesn't like you).

'I can read memory of the machine, but I can't save a script to it' -- really, get real
IPS site is just all 'How do I not hurt feelings...'
lol, pffft.
In reality all the questions are: 'How do I communicate effectively', which sadly lots of people can't do, and won't learn from a website.

I personally don't get the IPS site ;p

@djsmiley2k Huh. The answer to that is proven to be 42 :)
@JourneymanGeek Subjective vs Objective. And very little scope for providing citations/references :)

I can sense that IPS will get very very few accepted answers
as no one wants to hear 'nope'

pretty much

My router lost its settings after a power outage.

ah teh joys

7:34 PM
At least a couple of devices have static IPs, which eases the configuration burden a bit because they're client-side, but still.
Router AP and password reset to the previous configuration. DNS set to Google Public DNS. Dynamic QoS is set up. UPnP is disabled for security. Port forwarding set up. IPv6 set up.
Still need to set DNS reservations for a couple of devices.
(this is a NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S, model R7800)
Reservations set, rebooting...
Priority set to all devices currently on the network.
Backing up settings...

hey
does a dell service tag publicly expose the entity that originally purchased the device?

I back up settings after changing them

Essentially everything is set up, settings backed up.

Q: Completely erase hard disk

user48777 Possible Duplicates: Securely format a hard drive Erasing data before selling a computer I'm looking for open source bootable program to completely erase my hard disk content.

@Burgi I'd tend to use the ATA Secure Erase command.

8:19 PM
cheers guys

@Burgi Do you need any sort of verification that the data is wiped? If it's corporate, you often need an audit certificate. Look into something that will generate a cert for you.

i had a vision of turning them all into linux boxes and selling for at £20 each or something but i'm now a little daunted looking at the tower in my living room
@MichaelFrank apparently my word that they are wiped is good enough for my boss
he just wanted them gone
basically where we are based in the city centre is prime for office space

so the owners of the company are going to refurb the basement and rent it out
so all the crap needed to go

Updated Firefox on the main laptop – SHOR'S BONES!
The browser used to lag a bit when refreshing more than a dozen pages at a time. This lag is just completely gone.
Refreshing 32 tabs.

8:26 PM
i still have issues when FF creeps over 2.5GB of RAM

It used to not be able to fully utilize the processor. Now it does.
Jan 19 at 3:37, by bwDraco
Firefox is bottlenecked on the UI process. Yuck.
...no more.
It actually pegs all eight hardware threads when refreshing all tabs at once for an extended period of time. It used to not do that.
Refreshing 45 tabs.

omg... i have to burn a CD

The Firefox UI used to lag noticeably when I did this.
Wow. Just wow.
(Firefox Developer Edition 55.0b13, x64.)

does windows burn ISOs these days?

@Burgi It does.

8:38 PM
who knew! :)

The feature has been present since Windows 7.
Windows 8 added the ability to mount ISOs, assigning them a new drive letter. It's built right into the system – no third-party software required.

i just noticed that

However 3rd party software if needed would be MagicDisc
It's great, I never have to burn cd's.. Ever

@Bob: MASSIVE performance improvement with multiple tabs on the latest Firefox beta. Tabs open and close virtually instantly. Refreshing dozens of tabs no longer causes the browser to lag. The browser is actually able to fully utilize all processor cores without the UI process getting in the way. techradar.com/news/…
Tabs open and close virtually instantly.

@NotAdminDave what if you need to run something on a standalone machine?

8:42 PM
@Burgi: Then Ill need to burn a cd lol

;P

However, I use EsxI for everything thats considered standalone hosted in a VM and still not needed. Just add the ISO to the datastore and attach with ease.
But its not standalone obviously ;P

i want to nuke these towers before i start mucking about with them

It was a huge "ohmigod" moment. The difference was noticeable the moment I updated Firefox Developer Edition to 55.0b13.
