I should, yeah. :-P
But you know how it is ;)

Bob
Thankfully, KSP's music is kust peaceful enough to make me doze off, usually. Now, Skyrim... that one has led to a few painful 40-hour days.

Busy day being work or personal stuff?
Heh. I've pretty much always played KSP with the music off

Bob
Ah, I suppose you could call it personal. As personal as moving a giant pile of soil by wheelbarrow can get :\
how the hell do people use wheelbarrows without tipping them?!

Ummm... Depends on the wheel count?

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Do you sandbox, career or whatever new mode they have now?

4:37 AM
I used to toy with them when I was a kid

Bob
@qasdfdsaq One wheel. It loves to tip when I don't want it to :P

Sandbox. I have too many mods...
... I'm tempted to play career mode when 1.1 comes out with a full set of career-enabled mods

Bob
ah
I've always played career, but all the sciency things get tedious

I think my advantage must have been cause I was short as a kid, I had a very low centre of gravity with the wheelbarrow.

Bob
and I can't be bothered making a spreadsheet to track areas I've visited :\

Lol. There's a mod for that.

Bob
Then they added missions and money and I kinda gave up on it

Plus I got into KSP a year before they added science.

Bob
I do better with more linear games, I think
And sandbox modes are pretty much the opposite

IMO it changes the gameplay a lot, if you started off in sandbox only, but it's not unsurmountable.

Great. Samsung finally got those stupid Apple patents thrown out.

Yay!

Bob
@bwDraco For now*

Well once patents get thrown out they get thrown out.
> It's worth noting that the larger decision Apple prevailed on in 2012 isn't affected by today's ruling. A separate jury awarded nearly $1 billion in damages to Apple, though eventually that number was cut back to $548 million through a number of appeals. Last summer, a court decision denied Samsung's request for reconsideration.
Bleh.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Can't Apple appeal higher? At least until they reach the highest court (SCOTUS) and either they make a decision or reject the case?

Maybe... I'm not all that well versed in the US legal syystem

Bob
4:47 AM
I suppose whether that's possible depends on if there's a constitutional argument/interpretation at play.
Funny that I apparently know the US court system better than the AU one :\

@Ramhound Speaking of which. One of these days I'm gonna do a writeup of how to properly extract SLIC certificates and do a SLP OEM reinstall (for Win7).
If there isn't one already.
Had to do that recently and there's a couple blog posts out there but they're a bit ... scattered.

Indeed
I have another answer on how to prevent Windows 10 installs on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 :-)
When/If you do feel free to point to that answer in the comment section of this last answer. I should find the solution for 8.1, it exists, might or might not work for 7 (RW Everything) sounds familiar.

Bob
6:52 AM
@Ramhound You mean for SLP installs? Win8 is completely different.
Win8 is SLIC 2.1. Win7 is SLIC 2.0.
SLIC 2.1 has a unique key in the BIOS and doesn't seem to require a certificate on the install disk.
A related problem is Win8 will auto-install the wrong (OEM) edition... e.d. Home even if you have a Pro key. It just never prompts you.
SLIC 2.0 has a certificate that must be installed (slipstreamed into the install disk usually), an auto-command that must be run in an install script, and an OEM key that must be added to the PID file. And of course also requires the generic OEM key in the BIOS.

Agreed. In my experience, @random can be rather pedantic about the "cleanliness" of the site, including things like the length of tag wiki excerpts. There is some merit in his answer, but tag wiki edits on tags that are expected to be deleted soon are not entirely useless—they can still provide useful guidance to users, including advising that the tag not be used. — bwDraco 5 secs ago
@random is rather whimsical, and that may very well be the reason he's still a mod after all these years.

I'm wondering: I regularly read stories on other forums about people who are having problems with Windows 10 that they link to Windows 10, but are actually more likely to be related to stuff like drivers. Should we have a CW for such issues?
or do we actually have something like that already?

Be more specific

Basically a general "how do I troubleshoot problems with Windows 10?" Community wiki

How is that different compared to any other version of Windows or OS?
Most people who have problems are clueless about not only the problem but the cause of the problem.

The million-dollar question is "how is AMD going to catch up to Intel and NVIDIA?"

That was already answered years ago. We just have to wait to see if it works.

5:26 PM
Aug 20 '15 at 11:44, by DragonLord
AMD has a clear strategy. Survive 2015 and spend most money on R&D for next-gen parts. Then recapture market share by releasing these parts when they're ready in 2016.

What is this, repeat stuff you've said in the past day?
yesterday, by HackToHell
NOT AGAIN

The issue is given how far behind AMD is, it's not clear whether this strategy will actually work.
AMD has been marginalized by its competitors at this point.

That was already answered years ago. We just have to wait to see if it works.

Bob
@PatoSáinz Yea, putting faith in something from a site called fudzilla is a bit ... dubious.

@Bob I'm just pulling up whatever I can find about AMD.

5:28 PM
@Bob To be fair, other tech sites have been reporting the exact same thing. Almost using the same words
Basically someone published some data that says AMD is continuing to lose market share and everyone's picking it up as if it's some sort of new revelation.

AMD has virtually no place in the market, and it's not even clear if AMD's strategy of betting the farm and spending every last dollar it has on R&D of next-gen tech will actually pay off.
By the time Polaris and Zen come out, AMD may have too little brand recognition remaining to be a viable competitor even if the parts are clearly superior. Chances are good that consumers will continue to dismiss AMD as the inferior and cheaper solution, even though CEO Lisa Su has said that they're working on changing that!

It's a shame the only viable competition to Intel and Nvidia isn't viable competition to Intel and Nvidia.
I already completely disregard AMD processors whenever someone asks me for a laptop recommendation or something. I'm not sure if they run any cooler or better than they used to, but 6 years ago the only laptop with an AMD processor I've ever bought could have easily been used as a cooker hob.

You clearly don't remember Pentium 4's...
AMD laptop processors use the same amount of power as Intel laptop processors.

I do remember Pentium 4's although I never owned one in a laptop. I've got no idea what the situation is now, I've just never really considered them since. I'm pretty sure from reviews I've seen the performance/$ ratio is better.

@Jonno Well, Pentium 4s were notoriously inefficient and Intel's attempt to adapt them to laptops was clearly not the best idea.
Instead, Intel designed the Core architecture after the Pentium M, a completely different and much more efficient design.
This was while AMD Athlon XP processors had superior performance per watt and per clock. Intel decided to use dirty tricks to keep AMD from competing, and this is what started this whole mess.

@bwDraco "said they're working on changing that" means jack all until they release actual usable products that have made that change

@Bob That's the point of what I said.

"Instead of scoring each task on its own and weighting them according to usage model criteria, an individual task's importance depends on how long it takes to complete! " Lol, what.

AMD may very well deliver a gamechanger product later this year. The problem is whether consumers will actually pay attention to the benchmark results or just dismiss the new parts as inferior (even if they are not).

> Some preliminary AMD investigations regarding commercial usage scenarios indicate that an average spreadsheet is about 100 rows and a really big one might be, say, 2,000 rows. The SYSmark 2007 Preview benchmark, however, is based on a spreadsheet of 35,000 rows!
> What you see is that it takes the AMD processor-based PC about 7% longer to complete the job. However based on SYSmark 2007 Preview Productivity module scores, the Intel system is reported as better by 40%.

Bob

BAPCo SYSmark has had a long history of being designed to unfairly favor Intel processors, exaggerating their advantage using unrealistic, unrepresentative workloads that are completely disconnected from real-world use cases.

> An example of this is the Adobe PhotoShop component of SysMark. In the 2001 version of the BAPCo/Intel product, 13 different filters were used. On eight of these 13 filters the Athlon XP 2000+ beat the 2GHz Northwood P4.

I have two power banks pulling a total of about 2.6 A from this thing. After accounting for inefficiencies, that's probably about 15 W from the panels. There seems to be a tiny bit of power left to spare, so the panels are probably supplying about 17-18 W. More conservative estimates put it at 16 W from the panels. That's absolutely impressive.
(This is in near-ideal conditions.)
The 21W figure is probably the ideal, raw output of the panels under 1000 W/m^2 of solar energy. It'll always be a bit less; you can expect to get 15-16 watts of power from the ports under a clear sky in practice, and at least 10 watts in most cases.
I'm pulling about 13 watts from the ports right now.
Feb 20 at 23:10, by bwDraco
> [...] SunPower Maxeon cells [...] My older Anker Astro3 power bank was able to pull the full 1.5A continuously under mostly bright sunlight (slightly reduced by clouds), with a tiny bit left to spare. After accounting for losses at the voltage regulator, that's about 9-10 watts of power from the panels. The fact that this is possible with three panels is nothing short of amazing, and I'd expect even higher output in full, unobstructed sunlight.
The panels have no trouble generating 15+ watts under full sunlight.
The old model, which used traditional polycrystalline solar cells, was rated for only 14 watts and used four panels. This model uses monocrystalline SunPower Maxeon cells, and is rated for 21 watts while using three panels.
It's absolutely amazing how far solar power has come.

Who the heck needs a 12k DPI mouse?
I rarely have my ROCCAT Tyon set any higher than 3000 DPI, which is my normal setting for everyday use.
...and this 3000 DPI setting is with sense -4 (on a -5 to +5 scale).
I can see an argument for ~5000 DPI with a 24-inch 4K display, but 12000 DPI is excessive.
...okay, there are 15.6-inch 4K displays, but I still don't see much of an argument for such insane sensor resolution.
At that point, one could conceivably need the full 8200 DPI of the widely-used Avago ADNS-9800, but that's still a corner case as it would still require a very low sensitivity setting, a preference for very fast on-screen cursor movement, or both.
For most users, 4000-5000 dpi should be enough even in the case of a 4K 15.6" display.

10:01 PM
@bwDraco Marketing guys/girls need it.

Well, it certainly does seem that the long-established 800 dpi resolution typical of inexpensive mice is fast becoming inadequate even for everyday use with the advent of super-high-resolution displays, but 12,000 dpi is overkill.
Also, at that level of resolution, the tracking surface starts to become a potential issue. Accurate tracking at >10000 dpi may not be attainable except on a dedicated mousepad.

Bob
10:16 PM
@bwDraco You don't actually run it at 12k DPI. Usually.
There's some scaling involved that also increases accuracy at lower resolutions.
Much the same principle as used in some camera sensors.
Basically, you want to keep your eDPI low. But having a high DPI on hte mouse can be advantageous over having a higher software 'sensitivity' (which acts as a multiplier on the real DPI)

Bob
@bwDraco That actually means Number is not undefined.

No stars? :-(
I wanted to see what my code would look like in the sidebar :-(

Bob
10:38 PM
Otherwise you'd throw on trying to access a property of Number (undefined) rather than trying to execute undefined as a function.
If Number.isFinite is undefined rather than throwing an exception straight off (where undefined() is then an exception), then Number must be defined.

Bob's logic is making my brain hurt.
