03:22
@Bob So... it just dropped keys when people typed?
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank Yup. That's been annoying me for a while.
Apparently there was a keyboard firmware update released October 2016
04:04
lol
@Bob I found an Alienware 13 R3, 1080p60 non-G-Sync IPS display + GTX 1060 6 GB, 7700HQ, on sale at Best Buy and couldn't resist -_- got it for around $1600 US plus tax, after applying a promo code, gift card I'd earned from a prior purchase, and the up-front sale
Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 Gen2 ports, mDP, ethernet, plenty of I/O... a nice radiator/heatpipe setup in the back that isn't overpoweringly hot but keeps the modestly hungry GPU at reasonable thermals even when balancing the laptop on my knee while reclining in bed...
Definitely not a desktop replacement by any stretch, but more than suitable for ultra detail on last gen's games at 1080p or medium/high-ish on current gen's games, and should be fine for low-medium for next gen's games still at 1080p with decent (>30) FPS
RAM and storage both upgradable
2 x M.2 NVMe + 2 DDR4

04:18
@allquixotic ooh, nice
@allquixotic How's the warranty? 1yr or 3yr?
I wonder how it compares to an outlet refurb :P
Definitely sounds like it'll perform well.
@JourneymanGeek did you manage to nab that dedibox? :P
I see it was available for about an hour about 12 hours ago :P
Hm. dotnet has been running for 4 days now... 3 GB virt but only 40 MB resident.
Maybe a memory leak o.O
@Bob alas I missed it
and the 32gb xeon Ds are sold out too
Bob
Bob
I think I'm gonna make it log with timestamps
Counting cycles is annoying :P
I don't have a bad memory, my garbage collection is a little too efficient
04:51
Bleh... Installed TeamViewer directly from the install share, but it didn't activate the license properly... So I did it correct way and installed it through the automated system and now all I have is TeamViewer Host. :|
05:29
@OliverSalzburg It worked for me. Thank You!
05:49
I have to go meet lawyers now. I hate lawyers...

@JourneymanGeek brains also remove tragic or traumatic events. Those are not exactly 'unneeded'
erhm
do they?
because I clearly remember some tragic things
but maybe that's why my brain is so messed up, I dunno
06:31
hi
06:48
Yyyyyyyawn
07:04
nyaw.
@TGMCians What worked?
@Avery well, in a sense, a part of you clearly felt the details were more harm than good. And I kinda was thinking the minor things, like where my keys are.
07:28
@OliverSalzburg Permission denied issue
Do you remember ?
Ah, yeah. How did you solve it?
Actually I installed patch command manually gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/patch.htm
It was not required
I have msys64
I went there
in /usr/bin
I installed patch using pacman
pacman -Syuu patch in msys64
It installed patch in the same environment
so things started to work
Sweet
Sounds like something that could be put in a good Q&A :)
Yeah
If you write one, please share it :)
07:45
I will
morning
@Burgi rain yet?
a bit
:O
If rain runs down hill, why's it not all at the equator ;)
Bob
Bob
07:59
@JourneymanGeek are you around?
@Avery unlikely, but i'll ask
No, he's vaguely dog shaped.
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k boo
@Bob ahh!
I really fell like renaming our primary AD domain right now
08:08
erm... why?
just for the lulz?
A really long chain of migration tasks
rename it to something amusing at least
\\!1123#@$£&* should do.
I want to move us to O365 and our current on-premise AD still uses an ancient domain for the AD
We have an SBS on-premise and want to move to a DC-only deployment
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Just use your blog domain :D
08:09
do they still sell SBS?
@Burgi No. It's Essentials now IIRC
This one is from 2011
We've upgraded the hardware of the machine already and upgraded the host to Server 2016
Now come the next steps and I feel like I should rename our existing domain to make migration into the future setup easier
But I'm sure it will break everything
what sort of craziness will occur if you rename it?
I did that once, with a fresh domain, it hardly made any difference
is this better suited to a weekend of overtime with a legion of minions?
The thing is, this task has been delayed since forever
I think what I just outlined has been in progress for over a year
I want it done now :P
But key employees are not on-site and they should observe the migration at least for training purposes
08:13
lol
is it just renaming it?
what happens to the clients o_O
So I thought, hey, let's just rename the domain to get us started
@Bob vaguely
its a GP weekend, but... call the it dept in for a weekend
I'm interested to know what happens personally.
@djsmiley2k I think you have to reboot them 2-3 times and they work as usual
08:13
like, will things using a static Username/pass using domain\user break?
@OliverSalzburg wow ok
all logged in people will have to reauthenticate
GP weekend?
Domain\user is broken of course
@JourneymanGeek I need this weekend for myself
I'm thinking of powering through to Friday night
@JourneymanGeek grand prix
So: 1. Rename domain 2. Send everyone home because work is no longer possible. 3. ??? 4. Profit
2
08:15
in Azerbaijan
@OliverSalzburg will you get fired?
@Burgi Unlikely
do it first thing monday then
then immediately go on holiday
@djsmiley2k I found out that I forget more or less details depending on severity
on some events I remember most, on some... I only remember vaguely what happened and that it happened numerous times, but not the people or the count. Joy.
you remember negative events better than positive events
this is due to evolution
"i remember this lion eating me last week, lets not let that happen again"
INAEBOIAS
08:21
well, the event I don't remember is one of the most serious things that ever happened to me, that is still giving me occasional ptsd attacks.
so...
brains are weird and putting them into rules will fail
I'm Not An Evolutionary Biologist Or Even A Scientist
brains are wierd. I was making a joke about how forgetful I am tho :(
@Avery teh joys of your brain replaying an event to try and decide the best course of action next time...
i went to bed at 9pm last night
Can I please have no next time?
08:26
but if there was a next time, would you react differently?
I had no control, I'd still have no control, I couldn't ask differently.
@Avery hopefully
but how does your brain know that? :(
@Avery hugs :(
i'll shut up now
a photo of 'things' - thanks user.
Bloody hell
08:28
@Rahul2001 hey, how did the lawyer thingy go
This is too traumatic. Everytime that I speak with a lawyer I need to recall everything that I've buried in the past
And I breakdown badly
And I have no idea how I will manage in court tomorrow in front of my father and the judge
in the UK you'd be allowed to give your statement via videolink
@Rahul2001 do it not cause you want to, cause you have to. And if you do it right, its less likely you need to do it again.
@JourneymanGeek I don't know man. 12 different court cases.
I have no idea how we will manage
hugs
08:32
I've subconsciously forgotten everything that I've been through. And I'm happy like that. But when it comes back it's terrible.
I'm lucky as in my brain has never made me relive the actual experiences, but instead I just get the mental trauma.
.....12?
This smacks of vexatious litigation.
@Rahul2001 I feel you. In fact we were just talking about that.
i've never had any major traumatic experiences... at least none that i remember...
Point is, when you're done with this all, you'll be free
then you can forget it all
use your weaknesses in your favor
08:35
@Avery but I don't know if I ever will. Not for at least a decade
hug
@JourneymanGeek those were all filed by my father against us. Now our lawyers are thinking of filing more in return
@Rahul2001 Been there... still am
makes me stronger.
@Rahul2001 no matter what, 12 is too many
@Avery I could seriously do with a few hugs
@JourneymanGeek ha. Indeed. But it looks like there will be more
08:37
sending wifi hugs
Also, nothing wrong with breaking down
shows it's real.
Shows how much of a cockwomble your dad is right now.
Also, that's part of how you deal with it too
@djsmiley2k he manipulates, and lies
He bribed our old lawyers so they made it harder for us to win
It's like I've been living a terrible dream all my life
08:42
I can see no way out of this.
Don't worry, the earth is going to blow up shortly.
vote giant meteor 2020
morning
@Rahul2001 1. he wins, or 2. you win, 3. no one wins but the lawyers get rich anyway.
4. @OliverSalzburg renames the domain, breaks the courts computer and everyone is sent home
@OliverSalzburg MY SAVIOUR COME RESCUE ME
;p
08:53
steam sale tonight!
@djsmiley2k well, their password is "incorrect".
The courts use Ubuntu, strangely enough
(probably an old and insecure version)
probably still more secure than a windows offering of the same vintage
08:57
@Rahul2001 that damn bovine might be grimy.
@DavidPostill how do you stop Get-AdUser returning all the default properties along with the one you actually want?
@djsmiley2k is it a huge problem? just get the one you actually want and discard the rest.
ok, how @satibel ?
i'm just lookin over the shoulder of someone else and trying to learn :D
Okay, some PC building questions to distract myself with
@satibel You know that laptop with the broken body which I was thinking of using as a server?
pipe it, and use $_.value_you_want
@Rahul2001 yes?
09:06
Can I leave it running in a cupboard without a body?
As in, it gets rainy sometimes
outside?
And there's moisture in the air

A: How to get an object's property's value by property name in PowerShell?

aquinasSure write-host ($obj | Select -ExpandProperty "SomeProp") Or for that matter: $obj."SomeProp"

Does that help?
@satibel in a room that's... Kinda open
During monsoon there's quite a bit of moisture in the air
well, try putting some silicate gel thingy in the cupboard if you want to be sure, but it won't be much worse than in a case.
rice might be a low tech choice.

Q: Latency issues when inserting content to China

Andy KBackground We have an app that will write into a postgres db hosted in Frankfurt datacenter. @Burgi Probably not. Ubuntu LTS only gets five years of support.
but you can upgrade it easier
and it is free.
> as bidirectional replication is not allowed

10.04 hasn't been supported since 2015. Windows 7 is older and still in extended support.
09:11
@satibel huh. And should I cut holes in the sides of the cupboard and put fans for ventilation?
@OliverSalzburg I know
is it allowed ...?
one intake or exhaust fan should be enough.
but maybe not even necessary.
(no, I'm not trolling)
@AndyK the distance is a decisive factor.
make the world smaller?
@AndyK Your question is extremely broad. Explaining how to solve global data access issues is probably out of scope of Q&A
And I'm actually confused that this is somewhat catching you by surprise if you have an application that is globally deployed
09:13
@OliverSalzburg tbh I'm not sure where to ask the question
its also off-topic for SO (better suited for SF or SU)
@satibel ah okay, thanks.
@Rahul2001 the moisure in the air is only a problem if the computer suddenly gets really cold
@Burgi
or the moisture actually collects somewhere (because something is cold).
09:14
fair enough I will put that in SF
@Burgi
@Rahul2001 you Need that many fans: youtube.com/watch?v=GSllkFWVhJI
@AndyK you might need to find a chinese partner to host the server inside china.
the chinese have laws that mean western tech firms HAVE to use chinese tech support and suppliers
@Burgi the datas are small around 1mb per day
09:19
doesn't matter
I do not see myself contracting a partner for that ...
its how china works
that sucks big time
you might need to approach the chinese embassy/consulate in paris to ask them how to go about doing business inside china

we have 2 factories already in China
09:22
then you should have an IT contractor already in china
time to dust off the passport and head to china
don't take a computer with you :)
or take a fresh chromebook
if you do, use a burner machine
VPN the shit out of everything
vpn the vpn!
well, here is a good list: mricon.com/i/travel-laptop-setup.html
09:24
I'm wodnering
saterlite comms outta china?
actual 2 way saterlite, not modem backbone
my vpns and proxies work
so is my storage host
and we totally didn't abuse that before.
@djsmiley2k why bother?
@Burgi no more great firewall?
I'm not saying it's sensible in this case
but..... it completely defeats the firewall no?
it would be super slow
i'm not sure if a single satellite can cover both china and europe
you only need it to get the data outta china
09:30
wait... his issue is actually database mirroring not connectivity
so lol microsoft is asking for a list of stuff I made
<I made nothing>
I didn't take part in the xamarin stuff, I didn't organize events.
I didn't even use windows in the last couple months
Why can I start a 512 MB RAM Hyper-V guest if I have 2 GB RAM available? Tells me out of memory
@Burgi yeah.... maybe
but he says he can't replicate them (with no reason given)
and as replication of databases is generally a good thing...
the server in south korea is serving the app successfully but they can't mirror the data across the two servers for "reasons"
yah
1. Germany is too far from China
2. Can't replicate because 'reasons'
you can't move germany
so..... solve the 'reasons' instead.
Which we can't even approach, as we don't know what they are.
09:37
@OliverSalzburg maybe there is a minimum ram needed for the server?
@satibel I bet. But this behavior seems to have changed when we moved from 2012 to 2016. The host OS seems to reserve far more memory
We used to run the single guest on that host with 10 GB of RAM. Now it won't start with anything more than 8
And the additional 512 MB guest also doesn't start
And I can't shut down the 8 GB SBS because everyone is relying on it which is why we're doing the whole migration in the first place
Argh!
you don't have a backup server?
@OliverSalzburg ....
what @satibel said!
imagine the host blew up
what do you do now?
we are supposed to have a backup server, but the contractor is lazy.
09:51
There are lots of XY problems here. Why can't the read be easily accessed? I feel you would be having these issues even without the geography. — Burgi 8 secs ago
@OliverSalzburg nice
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg lol. you should file a bug against innosetup to have it unchecked by default :P
@JourneymanGeek I just wanted to test that it could still send emails after I added a proper logger. Ended up testing against my own address :P
how did that HNQ
one good answer (and it's not the accepted one), and a pile of "use this code" junk
@Bob I do not understand how so many developers on the planet roll installers and think "Hey, a desktop shortcut, what an amazing idea!"
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg it's more "I'll just use the default options"
Yeah, but why?
Bob
Bob
10:06
@OliverSalzburg because using not-default requires more thinking?
devs are lazy
<== example
It's not like creating any installer is a one-click operation. You have to spend considerable time on it. And you never realize that it is completely annoying to create that shortcut?
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg uh, actually...
But, yeah, if that is the default in InnoSetup, I should file that bug
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg I'd check, but ... one min
@OliverSalzburg actually, I have a software that just has a checkbox "create installer".
10:19
@satibel What software is that?
@OliverSalzburg Baguette++
@satibel wtf is that O__o
That evokes very bad emotions
@OliverSalzburg "Program 10 times faster"
Don't tell me you're actually using that for anything?!
just click the green button, and it uses the defaults.

A: Change to use folder from terminal?

djsmiley2kThe ~ (Tilde) is a built in shortcut that autocompletes to the users 'Home' folder. Normally the home folder will be found under /home/ however it can infact be in almost any location on the system (including on network drives). This is defined in /etc/passwd. So cd ~/Downloads is actually runni...

I feel like the user is asking 'wtf is up with ~??'
@OliverSalzburg well, there's some legacy code on it. Also it's good for throwing together a tool.
and if you need advanced stuff you can use a .net dll.
though, I mostly dislike it.
@satibel Good :D
It reminds me of the days where I compiled Flash with 3rd party tools to make Windows desktop applications
but it's on par with winforms :p
loving trump's plan to put solar panels on the wall
@Burgi put them in the basement o/
10:34
@Burgi so innotivate
he could then electrify the fences...
Bob
Bob
@satibel in which case... why not use actual winforms? :P
@Bob because we are using their proprietary db which is a pita to use with winforms.
and legacy code etc...
Bob
Bob

note to self: after setting up x-forwarding, there's no need to install xrdp
And looking at their testimonials confirms that
Bob
Bob
10:38
then again, x forwarding is likely to be painfully slow... maybe there's some merit in getting xrdp up? :P
@OliverSalzburg it's a tool to makes tools as a somewhat starting dev, for specific cases for in house use.
it's not great for big applications, but for a quick and somewhat good looking program it does it's job.
if you're anything but new to development, it will often make you cringe though.
Makes sense
@Bob also depends on use case
x forwarding wouldn't show you an error that was occuring, only on :0
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k nah. just tried both. xrdp still much much faster
Bob
Bob
10:51
doesn't help that this is a 300ms RTT link
x-forwarding doesn't do anything clever with the data, litterally just sends it as is
you can even setup a tunnel on :1 and push that out via netcat xD
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k that's what vnc does
where rdp is even smarter
no, x forwarding is worse than that
x forwarding uses a protocol possibly chattier than SMBv1, over the internet...
vnc has compression afaik
at least most clients do
xfree86 yaaaaasssssssssssss
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k hm?
hehe
it's likely still the same old code
as no one really uses it...
bet it's full of vulns too...

@OliverSalzburg ^ It's the Inno Script Studio wizard default.
Wait. It defaults as unchecked!
o.O
could've sworn it was the other way before... maybe not. hm.
11:23
Mum calls HP support:
Mum: <explains issue>
HP: "Please restart your PC"
Mum: "Uh... My computer isn't giving me an option to restart, it's telling me to update first"
(They've been on the line for 10 minutes)
Well, I even heard from the Docker for Windows team that their installer solution flat out does not support making the desktop shortcut optional
#Windows10hijack
11:55
@djsmiley2k wait... you can use scripts in nmap? goes down the rabbit hole
nmap.org/nsedoc/scripts/realvnc-auth-bypass.html humpf, I might want to test that with masscan.
