Oh hey, the Bash on Ubuntu on Windows console is largely dejankified in the Creators Update! \o/
@BenN dejankified?
No longer janky
@BenN Ah. Not a word with which I am familiar ;p
> North American informal

Bob
@BenN It was janky?
Yeah, input and display would completely blow up if you tried to run PowerShell inside it
Now you can actually use the arrow keys, and it prints text in the right place
23:11
@BenN Why would you even want to run powershell in a bash shell?
To make sure my scripts run on Linux
Bob
Bob
@BenN ...Windows PowerShell or Linux PowerShell?
There are still a handful of features that only work on the Windows version
@Bob PowerShell for Linux in Bash on Ubuntu on Windows

ah
@BenN buh... wha...?
23:14
:D
Also huh, NVidia is asking me to install some graphics drivers, but the prompt only appears on the UAC elevation desktop
@BenN You missed out "on Wine" on the end of that ;p
@DavidPostill I think I'd need a few of those to get that monstrosity working tbh.
@BenN "Our support agent tried to update your drivers but your security blocked their attempts. Please accept this UAC prompt so we can continue with our work."
@BenN Have you tried a platform-independent scripting languages like Groovy, Perl, Lua, etc. just to name a few.
I haven't - I really like PS because it's based on .NET, which I already know
yeah or node.js? where is powershell for linux link? are there multiple versions
23:22
here we go...
@William It works on several distributions - see the GitHub instructions
howdy micheal were you here discussions shells the other day? I think so. I like node.js if that is what you are commenting on
Aye, I was here the other day.
@BenN I admit it's a while ago but I vaguely remember that PS scripts fall into the same category as Bash scripts: candidates for top positions at the Hard To Comprehend Scripts Contest.
It's possible to write ugly PS scripts, but it's not hard to write clear ones either
23:28
@GeroldBroser In my experience perl takes the top spot.
IMO PowerShell syntax is far more intuitive and consistent than that of Bash or CMD
except powershell longer words which can be more confusing
@DavidPostill I've never used it. Once I looked over the shoulders of someone who favoured it. AFAIR, I think I have to agree.
@William Powershell has aliases, you don't need to spell out every command entirely.
not everyone will use the aliases though
23:31
@GeroldBroser I never got the hang of APL either :/
do you have a powershell to bash conversion sheet that you use something like this but longer and more complete hyperpolyglot.org/shell
i have been meaning to make one
I'm not aware of such a thing, since I generally stick to the one
@DavidPostill APL? Really? There is one who knows this? This language was more thought as a joke somebody tried to make on his fellow developers, I guess.
There are occasionally APL answers on Programming Puzzles & Code Golf; they are line noise to me
@GeroldBroser I tried to learn it at Uni many many years ago. I gave up and learned Algol (which I've now forgotten) instead :)

@BenN It's less the noisiness but a SINGLE rule of operator order: "right to left" means:
Throw all your maths away. Start even at the basics.
Go Illinois Ben. I used to live in Glenview!
But there's even worse than APL: M(umps)
yes, like the disease...and it is one
M(umps) is used in health care I hav eheard
The top answer uses a scripting language from a video game.
why isn't there an open source version of Mumps I wonder
23:41
yes it is
I remember from its manual:
Something like that on one of the first pages:
"All statements in Mumps can be abbreviated by one[!] letter. Though this might sound confusing at first sight, experienced Mumps programmers say that that increases their typing efficiency dramatically." Nuff said, I think.
Yes I have heard that one before
what field did you see Mumps in?
health and insurance
I love how it is abbreviated it spells a disease
Bob
Bob
Oh god MUMPS
me too, how fitting...I think they realized that so there's the one letter (we remember) M used for it

*shudder*
see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUMPS#Summary_of_key_language_features for an example of...no, not one-liners...one-letters

lol
I think I learned of MUMPS via TDWTF
right, there's at least one article about it there
