shrug @Dog chat moderation by nature is realtime. We do what we feel is right to handle things before they get worse.
I made a snap decision. It looked valid based off what I saw at the time.
"But he did it" is rarely an excuse, especially when there's typically more context than there is here to the use of the term.

Close queue is interesting- seems like there's in some cases decent scope for turning a borderline Q around; clarifying an unclear question here, narrowing the focus of a (broad question* there etc etc
Just my luck that it's nigh-on disappeared as I get to it :P
(I know, I know, give it time and there'll be more)

12:22 AM
Would an edit that changes the wording of a question such that it isn't a , say, "Is there a program to do X?" → "Is there a way to do X?" a conflict with author's intent?
My gut says no, especially if the change is literally s/program/way/

Cheers!

@bertieb That's a great change to make if it doesn't involve much re-writing of the question!

@DavidPostill Fab
Also, someone knows about ipconfig but not that 10.0.0.n isn't necessarily the nth device?

@DavidPostill it didn't ;p
Looks significantly better
@bertieb is it?
You don't necessarily have to issue IPs in order

12:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek Indeed not!

@bertieb I suspect some users would know about ipconfig to troubleshoot or look up their IP, but not necessarily know much about router configs ...
It depends. Some routers allow you to configure the range of IP addresses given out by DHCP. This allows IPs outside that range to be used for devices required fixed IPs. — DavidPostill ♦ 3 mins ago

@DavidPostill A fair point aye, and I'm not trying to give someone stick for not knowing something (pretty fragile glass house and all :P); just I'd have thought troubleshooting etc reasons would give enough insight to such things

20 devices is quite a lot for a home setup

And you might get not the first in the DHCP list if someone else had it before depending on the lease time and renewal etc ...

12:42 AM
Also (sanity check) is it just me, or does an answer which involves deleting and recreating partitions and yanking a USB drive after an install starts deserve a warning or two?

Q: Ultra high refresh rate monitor

Thijs365Hello dear folks of the internet, I was searching for a 144Hz monitor when I came across this Asus VZ239Q 5.6 GHz monitor. After lots of research I couldn't find anything about refresh rates of that height. So these are my questions: are there negatives about such a high refresh rate? And why ar...

> Asus VZ239Q 5.6 GHz
._.

8:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek This one seems to be a space cadet and dangerous around computers.

@GypsySpellweaver lol. That's a pretty mean thing to say

Have you looked at his first question?

Trying to install macOS on a machine with Windows. Huh??
How old are PowerPC systems?

@JourneymanGeek I think he's getting confused with an Asus graphics card. There are many that have a "5.6 GHz Effective Memory Clock"

Bob
8:47 AM
I started looking at LFS. Then noped out.

Ah.that makes sense.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver FYI, Apple rebranded modern OS X back to macOS.

@Bob LFS/BLFS is something that I intend to explore. After I rebuild my box.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver I might try it in a VM if I ever have a few weeks to spare :P

@Bob When did they make that installable on a Windows machine?

Bob
8:50 AM
But there's so many things I'm better off doing.

Hackintosh?

I like getting into the guts?

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Legally, never. Technically, it works fine on any Intel-based system. And you could probably broaden that to x86 (AMD) in general with a bit of hackery.

@GypsySpellweaver 1996 to 2006 I think
@Bob not any :p

I'm not 100% but hasn't hackintosh been 86'd on SE in general?

8:51 AM
Would fail on most atoms.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh. "with similar specs to official hardware". better now? :P

@GypsySpellweaver not really. It's more of a long standing SU rule

I do bounce all around, and often forget where I read this or that.
It just collects in the gray matter to spew forth later :)

And well... Beating unsupported hardware into working is fraught at best

And then chooses to format the disk for an install while he plans to setup backup software the next day.

A: Ultra high refresh rate monitor

DavidPostillI came across this Asus VZ239Q 5.6 GHz The link in your comment actually says: "Refresh rate 5,674kHz De refresh rate is het aantal keer per seconde dat het beeld wordt ververst en wordt uitgedrukt in hertz (Hz). 5,674kHz" The website is a Dutch website and the Netherlands u...

@GypsySpellweaver Yes. Or some other room where Smokey is running. There are several. I think SOCVR is one of them.

9:17 AM
5khz is rediculously high.
It's closer to 30 or 60 hz no?

@JourneymanGeek Now he's changed his question :/

@JourneymanGeek Mfg says 48~76Hz(V)

>Analog Signal Frequency : 54~85.5 KHz(H)/ 48~76Hz(V)
Digital Signal Frequency : 54~85.5 KHz(H)/ 48~76Hz(V)

Ohhhhh
That makes sense. It's entirely useless as a spec.... But it makes sense.

9:26 AM
Ok, how do they come up with 5.674 out of the Mfg numbers?

Hm. @GypsySpellweaver no idea :p

Can someone please rollback the question? I don't want to abuse my mod powers :)

I'd argue tho, the right answer is that the question has a flawed premise

Bob
@DavidPostill ehhhhhhhhhh. Unlike code review, I think this is actually a legitimate update of the question.

Granted, OP is just repeating what's on the sales web site (decimal separator aside).

Bob
9:30 AM
It's not a major question change. At most, it's fixing a mistake in the question.

Fair enough. My answer is still correct, although maybe a little confusing ...

Bob
I'm sure there's a meta post about it somewhere

It is useful as a reminder to check the Mfg specs, not some store site spec. (claim)

@GypsySpellweaver Good point. I will add that to the answer.

Bob
@DavidPostill I think the best thing you can do here is address the 5.6kHz part too.
Your answer doesn't explain why that (still clearly too large) number exists

9:33 AM
The GHz vs KHz error is an international miss-understanding in it's own right.

Bob
Ugh. Can't find anything on meta...

@Bob I've no idea, other than the website/reviewer screwed up.

Bob
Looks like it's generally discouraged, but idk - some argue that if the core problem remains the same...

@Bob I've wasted to much time on this to worry about it any more. His corrected number is still wrong.

@DavidPostill imo that's the answer :p

9:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek I said that in my answer.

Bob
@DavidPostill eh. *chucks upvote* here take this

@FleetCommand It's a very long comment to @JourneymanGeek's answer as it doesn't actually answer the OPs question.

@DavidPostill I actually think it compliments my answer well ._.
But I'd definately leave that flag to another mod.

@JourneymanGeek Agreed - but it doesn't answer the question :)

Looks like a rant to me. And claims to have been a writer, yet his language is tortured.
Maybe it's Praise be to editors.

user226528
10:23 AM
@GypsySpellweaver Claims to have been a writer in nineties. That's at least a decade ago. If he hasn't written anything for so long, it is quite natural.

user226528
Especially, if he has voted for that famous president who said "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully."

o_O They can't ??

user226528
@GypsySpellweaver LOL. It is the same president who said ""They misunderestimated me."

lol
> Bush was right, you know. History has no record of a major fish uprising. (The movie Jaws doesn't count.)

Didn't do Johna no harm neither. Just gave him a free ride to Nineva.

Oh, God, this is precious. My person favorite is: "See, free nations are peaceful nations. Free nations don't attack each other. Free nations don't develop weapons of mass destruction."

We ain't free here. Ever looked at the taxes? Or the price of milk?

user226528
Okay, I digress. After Bush, the quality of writing declined. There was this writer, whose name I forgot. He showed his books to several publishers before Bush. They didn't print it. But when he tried after, they didn't even ask any questions.

@GypsySpellweaver Ahem. Fish are not mammals.

Weeellll, in a manner of speaking. kinda depends on what "fish" is. Like what "is" is.

@GypsySpellweaver Go look up the taxonomy :)

10:33 AM
Spiders are not insects either, but insecticide tends to kill them anyway.

user226528
@GypsySpellweaver That's where metonymy comes in. See, when someone tells the other "I'm gonna kick your ass", the former neither intends to restrict the act of harm to kicking nor limit the region of harm to the heinie.

@FleetCommand YOU LEAVE MY DONKEY OUT OF THIS!

In re Jonah, he was swallowed by a ketos a "large sea creature" neither specified as fish nor whale. English version calls it whale.
In the OT it was a dahg, possibly "fish" but translated in the Septuagint as ketos, so who knows?
.. And, back to the beginning. Would that speaker have known the difference between fish and whale?

lol
plausibly no

is that plausibly as in "plausible deniability"?

10:49 AM
Well right up to the middle ages, they probably didn't have the level of taxonomy we had
a whale was a kind of fish
as were dolphins

Well, since it was "prepared" for him, it could have been something never before existing, nor since seen, hence having no other name.

What's the difference between them to someone?
@GypsySpellweaver depends on how literally you're willing to take the myth
It could have been a time travelling submarine
or lizard people

&c.
And, could have been exactly that, a myth.
I neither confirm, nor deny.

But if he was, would people have known a whale wasn't a fish at the time?
Possibly!

Can't say what other times and places knew. How did the Norse manage to describe electrical circuits and magnetic fields in relation to Thor's belt and his hammer?

user226528
10:55 AM
Thor's belt???

assuming they did
or modern folks read into it that way
Based off our simplified understanding of science.

@djsmiley2k If in doubt (especially if you are not sure if it is an audit) always click the link called "link" to the right of the review.

@djsmiley2k to me Its an answer. Its technically and factually correct.

@DavidPostill if I fail an audit, because a user has provided the same answer as another user (and I can't see it!) then I'll not give a damn about failing that audit, because that would be bs.
@JourneymanGeek yah me too
@JourneymanGeek I'm not even sure you could expand much on it ( maybe verify where the infomation comes from...)

However if someone decided to CV the question for a good reason... ;p

2:48 PM
lol

That would totally be an acceptable comment...

CV the question should not directly collorate with the quality of answers.
I've answered many questions while on hold (mostly on arqade) because I happened to know the correct answer

lol
I don't want to encourage such questions
I feel its very low quality and shows a lack of research

Yes, but we get one good answer, make it conconical
and make sure it details how in the future, if the defaults should change, you'd figure out what they are (links to documentation etc)

2:51 PM
That answer ^^^ was posted by the same troll who posted the help as a question.

ah
@djsmiley2k I do that sometimes
but this question lacks... rabbithole.

I've seen it asked enough times on IRC (for diffferent distros too) to know it's a common question.
because most of the time, supprisingly, it's not obvious
Most distros will randomize root p/w on boot
some will use root/toor, root/admin, root/password,
I've seen all the above.
Maybe expanding the question to be 'I've installed Distro X, how do I know the root p/w?'
:/

yah
expand it for all distros
If you're already logged in then you can always change it

But it feels disingenious to me to downvote then answer

2:57 PM
Doesn't to me :/
Would be supprised if there isn't a bad for it
'This question is bad, and you should feel bad.... but here's the answer and how I got it'

I was debating aibobot-answering it

@djsmiley2k you mean "most Ubuntu forks"

I couldn't resist. I've added a properly documented answer :)

A: Kail Linux Login Problems

DavidPostillWhat do I enter as the Username and password when I boot up Kali Linux for the first time? That depends on how you are running Kali. If you installed it then the installation program would have asked you to set a root password. If you are booting a live image then the documentation tells you ...

ooh
@slhck closed it ;)
Yay!

... I should have answered
with something like: "It is a test. If you can't reset the root password, you are not fit to use it"

3:04 PM
Have you tried looking at the documentation for the default username and password? I also strongly recommend learning the fundamentals of linux before diving into kali, especially since they do many things strangely and is not typical of a 'real' linux distro. Maybe you could hack into your Kali system? — Aibobot 3 hours ago
@DavidPostill heh, you probably should post your better answer on the other question ;p

Nominative determinism is the hypothesis that people tend to gravitate towards areas of work that fit their names. The term was first used in the magazine New Scientist in 1994, after the magazine's humorous Feedback column noted several studies carried out by researchers with remarkably fitting surnames. These included a book on polar explorations by Daniel Snowman and an article on urology by researchers named Splatt and Weedon. These and other examples led to light-hearted speculation that some sort of psychological effect was at work. Since the term appeared, nominative determinism has been...
