8:00 PM
I haven't a clue how to ask this question or search for it, but I got an email that seemed like it was from a website, but I got a warning from chrome that my connection wasn't private. The URL looked something like foo.bar.twitter.com. Does Twitter not own anything that is w.x.y.z.twitter.com?

What's the exact URL?

@SvenTheSurfer How are you reading your mail? With a browser? What OS?

Some tweaks are made for power efficiency: only the best bins will be used in laptops, and mobile GTX 1070 will have 16 of 20 SMs enabled at slightly lower clocks rather than 15 of 20 at higher clocks.

click.e.twitter.com

Ah, Twitter misconfigured stuff

8:03 PM
Does anybody know a solution to "the installer has insufficent privileges to access..." on windows 10 using the built-in admin account? Error affects everything I install. Can't even install Microsoft products.

The cert they present is for a thing at akamai.net (a CDN)
@JoshuaLamusga Does it work under a different admin account? IIRC the built-in administrator has UAC off, which can cause weird stuff

@BenN well, it doesn't work on my normal account, but then I usually leave UAC off because I have a vendetta against it
I'm just going to try turning it on and seeing if that solves it. Will respond if it doesn't work.

Did you completely disable UAC, or just put the control panel UAC slider down all the way?

No, I just set the slider all the way down.

Thanks @BenN.
So I can assume that domain.TLD/path will always belong to the domain no matter the subdomains (Just need to watch out for something like twitter.com.m.com/)?

8:16 PM
Right

@BenN Okay, I tried it on the normal account again to be sure. Things don't install. If you're curious, this one is office 265 with error 30175-4 (-2147024891)
I think there's an access issue; nothing has access to folders in the C drive (not sure which ones). For example, I had a post-build event in visual studio fail because it can't copy files over.

That error code does indeed mean "access denied"

Finally!
Dear Colleagues,

Last Friday our vacancy for a Product Configuration manager finally got published. If you know anyone who is looking for a new challenge and fits the profile please do not hesitate to inform them about this opportunity.
Published last Friday, but still not on the internal vacancy website

@Hennes What does a Product Configuration Manager do and where exactly do they need to do it?

This vacancy is to extend the existing team and the new hiring will report directly into me.

Kind regards,

Mireille
Mereille is located in Best. So it will be a job in Best

8:27 PM
Best Mereille? Sounds like a hotel chain...

Product configuration management is basically getting the product to be valid.
e.g. you can buy a car. Must choose a colour. May choose a pulling hook. May add navigation, ...
You can also buy a trailer. Same demand that you must choose a colour.

Simples

If you buy both but not the pulling hook then the customer is going to be unhappy
Make sure that does not happen. :)
Only not with cars but with MRI machines and Xray for Image guided theraphy

So product dependency checker?

Cnods. Check dependencies. Build into the catalog process. Make it logical and clear to all end users.
Get information from the Business innovation units about changes,
Keep track of how the information flows from catalog to SAP.
Keep it in syync with the siebel suite catalog.
Etc etc

8:30 PM
@Hennes Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find a place named "Best" using Google?

Heh, no.
I just cycle there (about 10km from my home)

@Hennes Sounds kinda neat actually. I like the calm tidyness of making sure everything has a place and it all slots together nicely

Just north of Eindhoven

I've done that kind of work for almost 3 years in their system. I should qualify for the job
@bwDraco Indeeed. Should have added a few PCI-e slots to it and gone pure SSH rather then NVME and rotating rust

8:33 PM
2x GTX 1080, i7-6700K, NVMe SSD (Toshiba OCZ RD400), 32GB of RAM. Full desktop power in a laptop!

And only twice the price!
Where do I sign?
It looks like a brick ate some more bricks and decided to have some lard to fill in the gaps
It looks like a 90's "luggable" laptop with rounded corners.
And the "ricer" undercar lighting system that "makes it go 0.00000001% faster"
Because light-pressure y'all
In case you missed the sarcasm: Pointless laptop is pointless.
I mean honestly, $4000 for a smegging laptop?
cough

I doubt a pair of GTX 1080s will be taxed even at 4K in the heaviest workloads.

@bwDraco You don't even need one GTX 1080 in a bloody laptop, let alone two of the buggers!

> [...] SLI dual graphics cards exceed the needs of the newest gaming titles [...]

Sorry. Calm

8:39 PM
Future-proof, but at what cost?
Is it really worth $4000?

@bwDraco $4000, it's right there on the page
There is no future that requires that laptop

lol

Honestly, there isn't. Playing a game would need you to plug in your 600 watt power "brick" or otherwise deplete whatever batteries it has in under 5 minutes
And that, kids, is why we're doomed.

Power is supplied through a pair of 330W AC adapters (660W total). This arrangement has long been used for Sager/Clevo's most extreme laptops.

Why am I not suprised it needs two power bricks?
That laptop is 100% stupid pointless idiotic inane bragging rights and nothing more.
It's the nerd equivalent of a midlife crisis.
"Hey, you're rich, smart yet don't know how to drive? Well have I got the laptop for you!"

8:45 PM
I'd prefer to build this into a desktop instead.
Would still cost thousands, but it'll be closer to $3000 than $4000.
...and it wouldn't be subject to the same power or thermal constraints.

I'm going through PCPartPicker right now...

I'm waiting for the new year to update this dusty old rig. She's still doing fine.

And the G-Sync monitor...
Oh. edited...

8:53 PM
1080s are overpriced right now due to poor supply.

@bwDraco the MSRP of the Founder's Edition is $700, so $725 isn't ridiculously far off the mark -- though it is, if you're comparing it to the MSRP of the non-Founders at $600...

How do you do that replace thing with cavil?

basically it's a $125 premium for having the most in-demand graphics card in the past decade within the same quarter that it was released

Oi!

The period is special

1. You need the space between the !! and the s, and 2. you need an ending /
every character counts
you can't approximate a regex find/replace

Backslash to escape special characters.

@ChatBotJohnCavil And to think I was going to support you when the robot revolution came!
Humbug

if you want it to focus on one specific message (to remove the possibility of future messages in chat causing the wrong message to be substituted), you can also add a space at the end of your s and the message ID number of the specific msg you want it to work on... like this:

!! s/right now due to poor supply/ /

Re Sager laptops: I can see a use for it.
The last three years I works in places where you could not get a desktop. Everything had to be laptop.
OK, fine. Give me a laptop which can do 3 screens at the same time. I'll even take the thing apart myself and insert a single RX240 (plenty to drive a 4k display with no gaming)

8:57 PM
R7 240?

no, he just means take a RX480 and saw off half of it ;-)
RX480/2 = RX240 ;-)

Why not get an RX 460 instead?
lol

it's the opposite of SLI/CrossFire
it's HalfFire

Sorry. RX 260. Like this one: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2016/08/08/gigabyte-radeon-rx-460-win‌dforce-2x-oc-2gb/1

Ah, but can it run excel?

RX 460 is precisely what you need for light gaming at up to 1080p.
It's designed for eSports games like League of Legends and CS:GO; premium games will typically run smoothly at medium settings.

Damnit! The drivers didn't go in for some reason

9:07 PM
@CanadianLuke Did they go to the wrong house again?

I'm trying to slipstream two Dell laptop's drivers in. DISM said it succeeded, I unmounted the WIM image and committed the changes. I just did an install on both laptops, and no Dell drivers loaded. I'm a little PISSED right now

Are you sure you got the right drivers for the platform?

Updating builds. Lucifer has ballooned to $8000 🤑

@bwDraco hilarious, and I know you have purposefully picked the most expensive parts possible just for the lolz, but why skimp on the HDD? why not 8 TB? :P also, the 6950X is likely slower in many games than the higher single thread perf CPUs like the 4790K.

@allquicatic The build did previously specify a 6900K but the difference is limited.

6700K and 4790K are probably both faster than the mere 3 GHz 10-core, because games aren't built to scale to 10+ cores / 20+ HW threads. They're built to scale to 4 threads. Even "multi-core" games. 4 is basically the limit.
also, there are way more expensive Intel enterprise SSDs you can grab that are also higher capacity :P
or you could spring for that 16 TB SSD... lol

Let's not forget Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0, boosting individual cores beyond specification. The chip knows what cores run the fastest.

8 x 16 TB SSD in hardware RAID-0?

@allquicatic That's not the point. The focus is on practical storage.
If a 1 TB variant of the SSD 950 PRO existed, that would be selected.
But the build isn't going to use enterprise parts.
Nor will 2TB or larger SSDs be selected.

9:33 PM
@BenN Yea, it's adding the x86 and x64 drivers (I built a dual-platform installer)
I'm trying to add one system's drivers, unmount and commit changes, then I'll try the second one as well.
SP1 and the convenience update went in, though

This is a much more realistic configuration:

That's Alastor and prices will probably continue to drop, at least until the build spec is updated to Kaby Lake...

9:54 PM
@allquicatic Pfft.
@allquicatic Meh, while that's true for most games, there are quite a few already that'll use 6 or more threads and be limited on a 4-core CPU. Plus, I tend to run a lot of crap in the background, so a few spare cores would be nice. Can't wait for Skylake-E

You could save a whopping $20 by dropping the floppy drive.
ehm, optical. Just as ancient and easily confused.

Wrong... Effing... WIM Index! GRRRR!

Now I can star it :)

my mum has just realised the olympics are on tv

Oh, did they start already?
(feel free to star that. I have no idea they are in Brazil or have started)

@Hennes You've missed 8 NL gold medals ...

10:15 PM
Now serious: We won some?

the UK is 2nd in the medal table because we voted to leave europe or something...
shrug

I know it started. I read enough about the economy in Brazil, about discussion of money wasted on these sorts of events is sensible or not.
(not sure either way myself).

I know it started somewhere last week I think.
But I am really not following it.

@Hennes Yep.

i've spent all evening re-purposing my dad's bird box camera for Operation HedgehogWatch2016
10 minutes test recording resulted in a 50GB avi

@Hennes

10:21 PM
hmmm...

I just realised a good think about the sager laptop. It might run with proper AMD or Nvidia drivers.
(not OEM modified <censored> <censored>)

i need to try recording from VLC and autosaving it to MP4 or something

10:36 PM
@Hennes Mine uses the reference drivers with absolutely no issue.

Sometimes that works. Sometimes and OEM has a batch with a different hardwarer ID (and you would need to edit the .inf files)

looks like my dad's laptop isn't powerful enough to render the display AND convert the video to MP4 at the same time
anyone else had any experience with video capture with VLC
?

Not tried that yet with VLC

i keep checking every morning for posts using those tags in the first post queue

You could probably write a Data.SE query for that :)
It would only update once per week, but it's not impossible for things to take a week to get through FP

i only have 10 or 15 mins before work to check
can i have some advice on my arqade.SE question?
i've totally rewritten it (i thought it was fine to begin with)

Q: Sharing Finds in No Man's Sky

BurgiI have found some pretty crazy things in No Man's Sky and I would like to share the finds with my friends outside of the game. Is there a way to do this other than taking screenshots and sharing them through Steam? For example an official database website?

I guess they want you to remove the last sentence

fair point
its a stunning, brilliant, dull, shallow game
epic but flawed
sony's marketing hype rose everyone's expectations so high that it was impossible for a small indie developer to meet them

@Mokubai What is this and where do I get one.
Honestly it's not actually too bad. If someone's after a desktop replacement gaming machine and has high-end needs, like, having a 6700K in their desktop and hating having to downsize...
In other words it would really suit me, right now. And the price isn't even that absurd. You can price a few non-gaming laptops up to £1500-2500 and they don't have decent graphics, 120Hz displays, or even a 6700K CPU

i don't think they will reopen my question on arqade :(

The edit should have pushed it into the Reopen Votes queue

Dog
11:11 PM
Heck it's even good value for money - it's more than twice the performance of an MSI GT72S Dragon - priced at £2800: overclockers.co.uk/…
It's also double the performance of the Aorus X3 v5, which I was very close to buying earlier this year (£1550)

If it doesn't get reopened in a few days, you can flag it for mod attention asking for it to be reopened

Dog
The question you should ask yourself is not how to get it reopened but whether you deserve to have it reopened.
Speaking of, the Aorus X3 has been updated with Pascal and 120Hz display woot :-D
That massive brick of a machine with a water cooling dock, now that's a machine that's purely for bragging rights
