@Bob You really seem to like the phrase "die in a fire".
Next time I'm buying a laptop, it's more likely to be a thin system. Most gaming will happen on the desktop.
I'd have a job by then and my schedules are going to be radically different.

12:28 AM
@BenN LOL

Wow, +1 for consistency

12:42 AM
@Ramhound your comment is not helpful to this conversation and I have written you to stop stalking me and to leave me alone ib writing. You stalk down vote and have not once contributed and violated my warning in writing. — fingertrick 12 mins ago
Since was reviewing an answer in the queue stalking somebody?

Had you bumped into that user before?
Also, 10K users can't see deleted comments
(Mods can though)

yes. no. Flag and move on

Wait, are you saying that mods can't see deleted comments?
Also, good morning!

yes we can no you can't? ;p

I have.
i have no idea if I "ran into" that user before

12:49 AM
TBH, I'm waiting on a CM to ask about this

I don't recall the answer from yesterday even!

@Ramhound it was the one accusing you of mocking them for being disabled

my point is. I got more things on my mind then remembering the user past contributions.

Maybe (s)he confused you with someone else then

oh, I am sure I have voted to deleted answers, but so did everyone else...
but I didn't vote because of whom submitted them
I voted delete them because they were below acceptable stand rads
had a bad enough day. Can't think about this. If I didn't select a reason, to delete that answer, I would have been better off clearly.
Going to bed....I hate that I feel this way. Feel powerless.

12:55 AM
Huh, that thumbnail is mildly NSFW (fixed, but I have no idea how to strikethrough in GCM)

1:09 AM
Hmm, after the 1607 upgrade, the Hyper-V guests that have checkpoints can no longer start

Bob
@bwDraco Really? I hadn't noticed :P
(yea, at this point it's become a bit of a running gag)

1:25 AM
@BenN ---strikethrough---
though s---trikethroug---h doesn't work. Nor s---trikethrough--- nor ---strikethroug---h
strikethrough blah---strike--- ---strike---blah lolol---this won't work---will it
boldworks though. worksbold and preboldpost

Test with spaces Ah, it does work. I had only tried two dashes

spaces are fine, just that a "word character" cannot immediately precede or follow a --- sequence if you want it to actually strike through
bold does not have that restriction... gotta love GCM
preitalic preitalicpost italicpost
works with *, ** but not --- -- don't ask me why

1:55 AM
interesting

2:10 AM
@Bob welp I've now migrated guacamole, two Teamspeak servers, and Cavil onto the new box.. I think that mostly covers stuff that other people care about, since I had my games running on the new box already
there was some weird but on Ubuntu 14.04 where something was eating 1-2 cores even when running nothing, but that's gone now apparently... the only load I'm seeing is from plainly obvious, legitimate userspace processes that should be using CPU time
with 32 hardware CPU threads and a load around 1 I'm not too worried :)

Good morning!

2:30 AM
Lol, Hello Brick and morter store, i am trying to buy something , and i do not see it on your website, is it possibly missing from the website, and does it exist in the store? clackity clacity click click, the guy looks on the web site. Uhhh yea 2 Feet, go like look on the shelf? you do know how to do that right?

Someone just citation needed me ;p

*poke*

annnnd the question was closed

Bob
2:52 AM
@allquicatic Nice

got the sink out
used the crappy dremel clone to try to cut the nut, which vibration-loosened it. Then the nut got stuck. Had enough clearance for my (shitty in the right way) daiso saw to saw off the part of the fitting over the nut from the top
then just hit it with a hammer a few times
amusingly while the off brand dremel is shit, its perfect for vibrating stuck nuts into loosening

3:08 AM
welp. Looks like my electric shaver needs new blades

@DavidPostill ^ so the dremel type tool worked. Just not quite as intended ;p

The battery is in great shape, though. Remington says it's NiMH (not cheap NiCd!) and they seem to be of the low self-discharge variety.
This shaver's been in use for what, five years? six years?
At least it's good to know that there are folks that aren't trying to cut corners in every last piece of their products. Remington Products quite evidently used high-quality cells here.

@bwDraco does it shave clean or is it a trimmer?

It's a Remington F4790 foil shaver.

I have a Wahl beard trimmer that can go from "barely 2-day stubble" (but not actually clean-shaven) to fairly long but neatly-trimmed beards... it lacks a battery; it's corded
I don't actually own any recently-used equipment for a clean shave o_o old equipment would probably injure me or not work well, like a 12-year old Norelco battery-powered shaver

3:11 AM
LSD NiMH cells last a good 10+ years if you take good care of them.

I use one of those trimmers. Apparently its a human equivilent of a dog trimmer ;p

@bwDraco is it comfortable? as in, very unlikely to result in accidental cuts?

@allquicatic Generally comfortable but you might get a bit of blood if you try to shave too hard.

I only need to go clean shaven one or two weeks in a year. I have a phillips somewhere that works well ... somewhere.

The cells say R2U—ready-to-use—which means they're LSD NiMH. Yup. High-quality cells.

3:14 AM
I used to go clean-shaven through high school and the first few years of college
it was painful because of persistent acne which would get cut up by the blades of my Norelco shaver

I'm pretty sure Remington used pretty much the same cells in my F4790.

now I use the eating benchmark to determine when to shave
specifically: if my moustache hairs get so long that I start accidentally pulling them into my mouth when I eat, then it's time to shave down with the Wahl to a #2 guard length

lol
I shave about twice a week these days.
Remington says the titanium-coated blades are good for one year of daily use, which is not bad at all.
The blades lasted me this long, that's for sure.

@allquicatic eh, my face gets irritated without protective fuzz, Also, what's a schnauze less Schnauzer? ;p
so I let it grow for 2-3 months, scissor cut the stashe, and mow it when it gets itchy

I follow up the beard trimmers with scissors on the moustache

Bob
@bwDraco o.O I don't think I've ever managed to get blood while shaving.
tbh I have no idea how it happens or how it's apparently so common

> What OS are you using?
What operating system?
What operating system are you using?
lol
Improved query, this time with average scores: data.stackexchange.com/superuser/query/edit/525305
Notice how "thank you" and similar responses tend to have very low scores.

@bwDraco lol. Why the downvote?

Repeating the query for Stack Overflow...
"Thank you very much!" is #2 on Stack Overflow, while "You're welcome." is #3.
"What have you tried so far?" is #6 (no surprise), although such comments are deleted on a single flag.

3:51 AM
certainly a very interesting query

Loads of "thank you" and "you're welcome" comments show up.

Why the downvote?

lol

Anyway, it's getting late and I have an appointment tomorrow. Good night.

4:26 AM
Now you can be sure USB Type-C chargers deliver the power you expect them to.
USB PD will be important going forward and a certification process can only help.

I thought the problem was with the cables

...this why we need consumer-oriented UTM solutions.

@bwDraco I think consumer routers that don't suck would be a starting point ;p

2FA has been in use for years in corporate environments but hasn't seen widespread consumer use until recently.
Why can't we secure home networks at the edge the way corporate networks are?
This is especially the case when home networks are increasingly incorporating IoT devices that have limited security measures.
Securing just the endpoints is no longer enough.
While there are products like the Bitdefender BOX that promise to provide security for IoT devices, we need to see more of these dedicated security appliances. Home networks desperately need to be secured at the edge.

4:43 AM
mornin

We seriously need more consumer UTM appliances. Defense in depth is what we need.
The conventional home network security paradigm of securing just the endpoints is no longer adequate.

Bob
Uhm.
I haven't seen an endpoint firewall in years.
Well, a proper one, not the rubbish Norton ships.
Also, security at the expense of usability comes at the expense of security.
Hm. Forgot about the Windows one.

5:11 AM
Bitdefender is smart enough to realize that the only way to properly secure IoT devices is a UTM appliance, but why aren't these appliances more widely available?
I shouldn't have to spend $600 + $300/year on a FortiGate to get full network protection..

@bwDraco hey did you build your desktop yet? Because i am selling a haswell

@Psycogeek No. I'll be a while before this is possible.

i will get the most money for it by seling it back as components again, but i spent lots of time assembling it too :-( but assembled computers dont make good e-bay sales unless they are new.
it's not like it has that much stuff in it. one of them samsung 850 pro 256 60-70$ Gigabyte UD3 board $60 High end I5 $125 4core makes it to 4.6g easy, primo psu $50 sum extra nic card, fans, and 212 heat sink. then I could toss my 7970 in for $100. whats that come to?
Ohh 16 gig of ram another 70$
and a 4T green disk $50. whole 1200$ computer for $500.
the pity is it is used , but more like just driven off the lot.
I had not even got to putting all the software on .

5:30 AM
cause home networks are a mess, and most people wouldn't know what to do with a device more complex than plug it in and turn it on
as I keep saying, we're mostly exceptions ;p
granted, I'm toying with running a dns server internally again since dns on my main router keeps crapping out, and I want to keep the damned thing running till newfangled mesh routers become a thing

6:14 AM
@Bob the man o war is 375 grams. Oddly, the fishers sans cable are 283 g

Bob
6:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...That's almost exactly the same weight as the Corsair one :P
I think mine was 373 but I rounded to 375 (also, inaccurate scales, bleh)
I wonder if 375 is a target weight

@Bob scale's digital
its about as accurate as a househole scale would get

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, same, but I still don't trust it :P
The auto-zero thing has been iffy in the past, and 2g difference really is within margin of error

(fishers are 'smaller' but it feels heavier and more substancial)

6:49 AM
We're going to lose this competition so badly...
It took us 4 hours to render a video, and then realised that our teammate spelled "retail" as "retal" 😭😭😭

7:04 AM
@Bob eh
I trust baking scales cause some folk are a bit picky and bake French style. By weight not volume.

7:22 AM
is it even possible i am connected to internet but i can't access google,facebook stackoverflow and other websiite but i am chatting -_-

Bob
Sure, entirely possible.

how?
getting server not found on all website

@PIMP_JUICE_IT Hehe. A lot of those are mine, via stackapps.com/questions/2116/…

morning
what server/website monitoring software does everyone use?

7:38 AM
Last workplace used sensu. Scaled well, not too annoying....

> Sensu | Monitoring that doesn't suck.
i'm sold already!
we are using pingdom at the moment and its fine for websites but it doesn't really allow for server monitoring (CPU/RAM etc)

We had it do things like report when systems were on 100 Mbps connections. And of course... Got the info off a home brew perl script cause minussquare vfx was all about reinventing all the wheels.

minussquare... is that one of the cryptic company names you traditionally use?

hmmm....
will i have heard of them outside of the industry?

7:50 AM
@Burgi they worked on a lot of the marvel movies

ah
i feel bad for not knowing them

they used to be more on the high end, environmental destruction side of things
now I donno. The indian company they 'merged' with seems to be bleeding a lot of money

I read this in an old british lady voice

8:09 AM
basically sony ruined the game
you has air con?

that's my dad's 'office/den' area
we did the ... improviced piping
we used a pipe connector shaved down with a dremel to attach the air hose to, and diverted the hot air to the clothes drying area on the other end of the wall ;p
Oh, I have a split unit in my room

8:35 AM
@Psycogeek This Windows Scan menu that shows. It is driver-based software that process scan after it's completed? If so, why can't it simulate how will image be affected after I adjust brightness and contrats if it already grabbed scan preview? All it takes is to simulate to reflect changes I will be making.
@JourneymanGeek Is this dehumidifier or mobile air conditioner?

@Boris_yo portable air conditioner

@JourneymanGeek Do you drill a hole in wall to let the pipe out?

That's what we were trying to avoid
instead we used some PVC pipe and connectors (with a homebrew adaptor) to vent the air out to another room where the warm air would help dry clothes faster ;)

@JourneymanGeek Interesting. Is that room far or isolated?

@Boris_yo we're planing to curtain off the closed area. The hot air gets vented into a clothes drying area ;p

8:40 AM
ffs...

so we're using the force of the airflow and the wierd layout of my apartment to our advantage

@JourneymanGeek Are you familiar with air cooler? You fill in the water and so it cools the area. Requires positioning close to open window though.

@Boris_yo had one. It has the unfortunate side effect of increasing humidity

@JourneymanGeek Yes. You have high humidity there?
What's your temperature in Celsius in Singapore?

my minion introduced a serious frontend bug and i missed it when i merged the branches
oh and the company want me to do unpaid overtime

8:51 AM
@Boris_yo 30s give or take 5 degrees
@Burgi that's always a bad thing
Even if you get OIL for that

yeah
i got stung with that in the past

Bob
9:51 AM
@Dog well, it's really hard to test but I think the antenna is making the difference between 15 and 35 down :P
I'll try again when it's less congested later
then again, the non-CA modem pretty much had the same speeds

Dog
10:02 AM
@Bob Nice
@Burgi Nagios and Ganglia
Neither are particularly easy to set up or Windows friendly

10:23 AM
A small question, is it possible to turn off the feature of google chrome that disconnects pending page loads with "net::ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED"? The reason being that google chrome is too aggressive with this and disconnects loading pages when my computer gets a new ipv6 address, even though the site I'm using is only IPv4

I've only seen that on my phone
and its when the network actually changes
that, I'd add might be a question for the main site
@Bob I should be able to play today, with the usual interruptions
We ran low on dog food but I handled that in the afternoon. ;p
also, do you have the SR3 DLC?

hmmm...
@Dog thanks

10:46 AM
@Boris_yo yes is the software for the scanner, process after the raw image is captured, very rarely there will be like one item that actually changes the scan (other than the res) you should be able to preview approximations of how the software will effect the final. The cannoscan scan gear for cannon, does that. On it you scan a "preview" image, which is a low res quick scan, then alterations show on this preview.

11:20 AM
ugh
dev hell today :(

ugh
I am suffering the cost of being a dumbass.

Sounds nasty

kinda
I had to saw apart a faucet to get it out. ;p
after trying to cut apart a bolt (losening it) and possibly releasing small quantities of magic smoke from a cheap grinder

11:40 AM
i'm getting crazy ass IIS issues while i try to debug an issue

@Burgi Sounds like a normal day to me

i hate IIS
we need it for all the shitty umbraco sites i have inherited

ALso, nice catch. Took me 2-3 attempts to find one of those, and I KNEW it was there.

This one seems to manually craft his/her posts. Not a trivial as a markov-chain bot. :)

yup. It was almost clever.

@JourneymanGeek links?

@dino terdon handled it
Also what happened to your ava 0_0

How do you change the color scheme in bash on Ubuntu for Windows?

1:12 PM
@dino == @jokerdino?

I would assume so

@Psycogeek By live preview I mean it would instantly reflect changes I make with sliders. This is not possible with Windows-based one so maybe XnView does something like that? I have Paint.NET too and I have Google Picasa...

@JourneymanGeek thanks
@Burgi just dino

you've grown up and are now trying to shed the "joker" image?

No.
@Burgi but that hurts

1:16 PM
@JourneymanGeek Is air conditioner something you can live without in Singapore in summer?

hackaday.com/2016/08/16/… for someone whose husband just set the kitchen on fire, that lady has tremendious presence of mind
@Boris_yo erm. Nowadays no.
We've gotten used to air con, and its warm this year

@dino it was meant as a joke....

@Burgi I see.

and as far as inefficient methoids of cooling goes, we're reusing the warm air to dry the clothes ;p

in my head i'm now going to call you @srsdino

1:18 PM
heh, sure.

@JourneymanGeek Air conditioning comes 2nd from quality of life perspective. 1st is food and water.

@Boris_yo when 1st is secured, it's natural to climb up.

@dino You can't do office work without second. You can do physical job without it however.

Yeah but I am not doing physical labour and I have reliable sources for food and water for the foreseeable future.

@dino What work you do? There are 2 types - mental and physical.
You either stress brain or body.

1:24 PM
@Boris_yo Or both. Or neither :)

I like the 'or neither' one. :)
Time to stress the joy centers of my brain with some more critical role

@DavidPostill Mental work requires concentration, focus, mental clarity i.e. body comfort which requires appropriate working conditions.

What is it that you are getting at?

@Boris_yo I built a chimney. It fell. I rebuilt it. It stands.

Just stressing importance of office and home environment.

1:30 PM
@Boris_yo "requires concentration, focus, mental clarity" many physical jobs require those as well, for example firefighter, sniper, jet fighter pilot, astronaut ...

@DavidPostill Yeah but some of these do not have appropriate environmental conditions so it's tough. If I would not have those I would not be able to function, but it's just me. I am eastern european with weak resistance to hot climate.

@Boris_yo I was merely sharing the mildly absurd engineering of it.
I just stuck some large gauge PVC pipe to a wall. ;p

@JourneymanGeek Must be opposite of chimney.

it blows not sucks

NEO
I'm trying to find a way to VERIFY if the SSL connection is working properly or not (Java). I'm aware that not using a proper certificate or wrong certificate will throw an exception but how to really see that the data is in fact ENCRYPTED? I can use network packet sniffing tools to check this, but any automated way to test this?

1:36 PM
@Boris_yo It just takes gradual adjustment. Like you don't get in the hottest sauna first. You work your way up ... :)

@NEO You might want to bulk that out into a question, then stick it on the main site.

@NEO That might even be better suited to SO as there may be a way in your java program to get that info.

Hi all, can JavaScript (*.js) files update theirselves? I saved a webpage (simply by pressing Ctrl+S) and all of its contents are saved in my Dropbox. I didn't share it with anyone, but every now and then, I see that those .js files are updated. Is this normal?

They shouldn't be able to write anything to your hard drive

I think so too. So how come are they updated?

is the code actually changing?

Are you sure they're changed on disk?

if you have an old copy, try a SHA-1 or MD5 hash comparison between the files
if the contents are identical then it's probably just some scanner or dropbox or something periodically changing the date
in general though, if you're executing JavaScript in a web browser, the browser would not give enough permissions to the JS for there to be any chance at all for it to update files on your disk
but if you're executing the JavaScript in NodeJS, Node definitely gives the JavaScript runtime environment enough permission to do arbitrary disk access, including updating the original script

2:08 PM
That applies to HTA documents/applications too, IIRC

I never checked inside the files. But no I'm not executing them, not even in a browser. So it's possible that Dropbox is doing that. But it's curious why it's only doing this to the .js files.
