heh... Microsoft sounds pretty desperate to bribe people onto using their stuff :P then you get used to it and want to keep using it after they pull out the free ride from underneath you :P clever marketing
okay, just remembered something I heard today and want to discuss with you guys: According to a store clerk I talked to, an SSD cache gets wiped every time you shutdown your computer. is that true?
because if so, that makes SSD caching not reallly an option for me
since I shutdown my computer every night since it's in my bedroom
I dont get that, after looking at the options, i prefered having all the "non-storage" stuff be ON the SSD, even went back to exchange for a bit larger SSD. but i also have buku ram, and have been playing with block cache , for the SSD itself to reduce write.
@NateKerkhofs PrimoCache uses volumes for L2 cache, not physical disks, so yes, if you partition your SSD, you can allocate only certain partitions to be used as cache
volumes are basically partitions on a disk, but they're more general than that, since volumes can come from other sources, too (like iSCSI)
I (on the other hand) would not be sure why you would not want all your OS and games to be on the SSD first, and what is in the large storage HD that would need that speed?
Also the loading up of textures into the video card and all, while faster with SSD, is still bottlenecked at the program and work it has to do. I monitor that kind of thing while playing, and really pulling less than 100M to load the game up :-(
@NateKerkhofs There was another thing, these SSD caches are really safe, the writing also had to go to the HD always (and as already stated, it stays in the SSD) Writing already seems a bit slow to me on things. But downloading (heck) loading the games from steam is even slower. So i wanted the write speed too.
That is the only reason I never did a Hybrid (Nand and platter) disk, intels own info (for thier hybridisation) shows it isnt wonderment, it is safe and faster, and improves the read LOADS but does little to help the write.
and you still would want to have a backup of everyfreaking thing , or wait till you have that problem, then figure a 4Gig external disk looks rather cheap , when it is all borked up .
@NateKerkhofs ^ back up there, So not even a nice little hole on the SSD for the OS? Its small :-) especially if you already install the big games elsewhere.
I have had that go bad only 2 times out of hundreds, when an update decided that my game would have been installed in the default location. Sure Dummy , just drop that update anywheres .
How'd that patching go ? , when the file your patching wasnt there :-) how do they do that.
@Psycogeek Again, I don't see the point of backing up my entire computer when everything I really need a backup for is on Dropbox, and thus on at least 2 machines.
I don't need a backup for my game DLLS, for example, I can just download them again
everything I need: resume, password database, government documents,... is in my Dropbox
and if I really want to be paranoid, I can also put it on my Onedrive later on
My ISP provides an option to pay for a fixed IP address. What are the advantages of a fixed IP address? This relates to a home connection which will be used for general browsing, movie download / streaming, and video calls.
I did not see why this question could not be asked, and easily answered as it was easily answered. If you want to run a host server thing you may need it, but for your uses you do not.
There are hundreds of questions about static and dynamic, but not such a lame simple one as "why as a home user would i want to buy a static"
For a moment i percieved that it could be seen as a problem (somehow) because dynamic IPs and hopping around , allow spammers, and jackasses to get a new IP and herass people. But that did not seem to apply so much here.
If your not prepared to handle 15,000 stupid questions a day , then remove that "anybody can ask a question" off the front :-)
Try "Superuser welcomes good questions that have can have solid factual answers , that are already at wikipedia.org" "When asking at superuser be sure to include all relevent information, be clear and concise, you have one chance to be downvoted"
