heh... Microsoft sounds pretty desperate to bribe people onto using their stuff :P then you get used to it and want to keep using it after they pull out the free ride from underneath you :P clever marketing
hooked, like a meth user :-)
except legal, lol
You should see how i sweat when the computer goes down
okay, just remembered something I heard today and want to discuss with you guys: According to a store clerk I talked to, an SSD cache gets wiped every time you shutdown your computer. is that true?
because if so, that makes SSD caching not reallly an option for me
since I shutdown my computer every night since it's in my bedroom
18:04
@NateKerkhofs must define what method of SSD cache, the one in the disk itelf, the intel method, software cache methods?
@NateKerkhofs that's an overgeneralization and not necessarily true
it depends on the software you're using and what type of cache it is
i'm likely going to use a software cache
unless I'm going for a 64 GB cache, in which case I'll use the intel method
well, PrimoCache and that other popular one Bob pointed me to both have persistent L2 cache storage between boots
so their cache persists through reboots?
that's what I just said, so yes
18:08
I dont get that, after looking at the options, i prefered having all the "non-storage" stuff be ON the SSD, even went back to exchange for a bit larger SSD. but i also have buku ram, and have been playing with block cache , for the SSD itself to reduce write.
question: if I use PrimoCache, can I configure PART of an SSD as extra L2 cache?
something like a 64 GB partition, and the rest as a normal SSD?
because if that's possible, I might get a 500 GB SSD, then a 2 TB HDD, and use a part of the SSD as a cache for the HDD
@NateKerkhofs PrimoCache uses volumes for L2 cache, not physical disks, so yes, if you partition your SSD, you can allocate only certain partitions to be used as cache
volumes are basically partitions on a disk, but they're more general than that, since volumes can come from other sources, too (like iSCSI)
and would that make sense to do?
because a 500 GB SSD and a 2 TB HDD would fit right in my budget while still giving me both an SSD and extra storage space
and if necessary, I can expand the cache size to something like 128 GB later
well, depends on what you're using it for -- not sure why you'd want to make only a portion of the SSD into cache
I'm a gamer
I'm currently playing Witcher 3 and GTA 5, and will soon install Batman: Arkham Knight
and I'm also planning to upgrade to Windows 10 soon.
18:16
I (on the other hand) would not be sure why you would not want all your OS and games to be on the SSD first, and what is in the large storage HD that would need that speed?
games are big
GTA 5 is 60 GB, Witcher 3 is 30, Batman will also be big
so if I only install games on the SSD, I'll run into storage issues pretty soon, I'm afraid
I have my SSd split to a tiny chunk for the oS, and the big brunt of it set for the working installed games. Plus other important often accesses stuff
and according to @Bob, only a fraction of a game's installed size is accessed in a way that makes it cached
because most is textures, sound, models,... things that aren't cached
True like 1/2 to 1/3rd even WAY less when something like movies would not advatage from speed.
(the game movies)
@Psycogeek so if I can install X amount of games on an SSD, I can likely fit 2X or even 3X as many games on my HDD without a noticable speed impact
but that also means that it might be smarter to just turn the entire SSD into L2 cache, not only a partition
18:21
Also the loading up of textures into the video card and all, while faster with SSD, is still bottlenecked at the program and work it has to do. I monitor that kind of thing while playing, and really pulling less than 100M to load the game up :-(
more like 13-50MB (yea big b)
@Psycogeek which means that using an SSD for a cache is far more beneficial than just using it to install games
Remember I was of the opinion for my uses that it was not the way to go.
It was better for me to put it ON the ssd, but i do not hoarde games, I have at most ~6 on at any time.
@Psycogeek I recently uninstalled 400 GB of games, so yeah, I am a game hoarder
then IF you could do a 500gig SSD , a 100g for the os and programs, and 400 for the games partition, keeping it a bit seperated
18:27
whoa
(my OS and programs is supertrimmed and only using 30)
from current prices, a 1 TB SSD costs 500 EUR. getting a 500 GB SSD as a cache, and then a 2 TB HDD for the OS and games, would cost me 400 EUR
@HackToHell journalist in UP 'burned alive by police' for exposing corruption? @_@
that's almost as bad as the U.S., where they make you disappear
Shit happens, er rarely stand up to stuff like that
@allquixotic They make you disappear there, here it's a public execution
@HackToHell right but it's still bad either way -_-
18:29
aye it's bad
@NateKerkhofs There was another thing, these SSD caches are really safe, the writing also had to go to the HD always (and as already stated, it stays in the SSD) Writing already seems a bit slow to me on things. But downloading (heck) loading the games from steam is even slower. So i wanted the write speed too.
@allquixotic India's increase digital surveillance worries me
@allquixotic What is UP?
man, Bethsoft is going HAM right now
@NateKerkhofs Uttar Pradesh; sorry, I use abbreviations for Indian state names because so many Indians are in chat here that I'm used to it
MS's vr thingy was pretty cool too
18:33
That is the only reason I never did a Hybrid (Nand and platter) disk, intels own info (for thier hybridisation) shows it isnt wonderment, it is safe and faster, and improves the read LOADS but does little to help the write.
@Psycogeek writing is not that big a deal for me, honestly
I can download whatever I want before noon
so if it takes a few minutes longer, big deal
every time someone mentions an SSD Hybrid Drive (SSHD) I think of OpenSSH Server (sshd)....
I'm actually having more issues with non-steam clients, like GTA 5, that somehow manage to lose connection to the server every 5 GB for 2 minutes
I was installing GTA 5 on Sunday, started at 11 AM, finished at 12:30 PM
and you still would want to have a backup of everyfreaking thing , or wait till you have that problem, then figure a 4Gig external disk looks rather cheap , when it is all borked up .
@NateKerkhofs ^ back up there, So not even a nice little hole on the SSD for the OS? Its small :-) especially if you already install the big games elsewhere.
I have had that go bad only 2 times out of hundreds, when an update decided that my game would have been installed in the default location. Sure Dummy , just drop that update anywheres .
How'd that patching go ? , when the file your patching wasnt there :-) how do they do that.
19:02
@Psycogeek Again, I don't see the point of backing up my entire computer when everything I really need a backup for is on Dropbox, and thus on at least 2 machines.
I don't need a backup for my game DLLS, for example, I can just download them again
everything I need: resume, password database, government documents,... is in my Dropbox
and if I really want to be paranoid, I can also put it on my Onedrive later on
what is the speed differential from local external (say doing 75Mb/s avg usb3) and sucking it back off the web?
@Psycogeek Does that really matter if it's only a few GB?
400g of games?
@Psycogeek I am NOT backing up my games anyway
Ahh, because they are not life and death.
19:06
I have 200 Mb/s down
@Psycogeek The only thing that's worth backing up about games is the savedgames, and maybe the config files, and I got a tool for that
I just need to configure that to make weekly backups
everything else is easy to reinstall
19:20
Weekly backups have been configured
@allquixotic I suddenly feel the urge to listen to some wubwubs myself. I don't know whether I should thank you or hate you
19:38
That sesame street thing, so glorious!
20:19
big accomlishment for the morning, got the nozzels all cleared on the jet ink printer WhaHooo :-)

Q: What are the advantages of a fixed IP address?

JDelageMy ISP provides an option to pay for a fixed IP address. What are the advantages of a fixed IP address? This relates to a home connection which will be used for general browsing, movie download / streaming, and video calls.

I did not see why this question could not be asked, and easily answered as it was easily answered. If you want to run a host server thing you may need it, but for your uses you do not.
There are hundreds of questions about static and dynamic, but not such a lame simple one as "why as a home user would i want to buy a static"
For a moment i percieved that it could be seen as a problem (somehow) because dynamic IPs and hopping around , allow spammers, and jackasses to get a new IP and herass people. But that did not seem to apply so much here.
22:25
Woohoo
23:01
If your not prepared to handle 15,000 stupid questions a day , then remove that "anybody can ask a question" off the front :-)
Try "Superuser welcomes good questions that have can have solid factual answers , that are already at wikipedia.org" "When asking at superuser be sure to include all relevent information, be clear and concise, you have one chance to be downvoted"
23:48
uuuuugh. I hate troubleshooting call centre PCs!
