@allquixotic: not that many good options for many things outside the US tho :/

I don't use these services, but it's pretty clear Grooveshark has been doing illegal stuff.

Yeah, but it worked
As I was bitching about the other day. While some things are globalised properly, stuff like music and a lot of media arn't. Whether I can buy, say a song or a service is based on a tangled web of deceit of complicated licencing agreements.

@JourneymanGeek That's why we have things like compulsory licensing for music where someone can simply pay a rights group the appropriate royalty for a particular use.
Sadly, these structures aren't well established outside the US.

Q: Banned for 3 days because of wiki tags - explain please

harrymcAs I have access to moderator tools, I have tried today, as I do for several years now, to access the "review" section of the moderator tools to which I have access because of my reputation. To my surprise I was greeted by this unfriendly message : Do not approve any tag wiki edits that are ...

ahh, harry.

This is why gotchas like "check for plagiarism in tag wiki suggested edits" need to be documented.
The mods know far more than ordinary reviewers.
It would only be fair if some of this experience was made available to ordinary users.

12:14 AM
lol. As far as that goes we have the same tools you do.
None ;p

It feels wrong for me to have to follow rules nobody but a particular, highly-experienced mod (@random) knows.
That's why this question exists:
1
Q: What are some common "gotchas" associated with moderation activities?

DragonLordOver the past few years, I've run into several little "gotchas" when it comes to common moderation tasks such as migrating questions, reviewing posts, or evaluating suggested edits. These mistakes aren't as well documented as I'd like them to be. What should I look out for when performing these ...

@DragonLord: If it looks copy pasted, we google it and reject
And its a known rule

Bob

Huh. I really like the new Plasma theme on Kubuntu 15.04.
Actually, it feels cleaner than Win8.1 Does.
On par with Win10. I think I even prefer it a bit.

@DragonLord oh, I meant the rehosting isn't too important

@DragonLord best get to WORK! that desk looks overprepared, and underutalised :-)

I'm coding right now ;)
Wow, NetBeans is really great

Bob
@DragonLord Heh, I just spent quite a few hours working on a Node project in VS... that was quite a nice experience, as far as the IDE goes :)
Though, there were a few annoying quirks.
Now I just need to wait for Germany to wake up.

The error checking it gives is almost as good as Visual Studio's

@DragonLord your first task, create 500 lines of code that only outputs Hello World :-)

Bob
4:44 AM
@DragonLord That would be JSLint/JSHint. Fairly standard static analysis tool for JS integrated into many IDEs.

(the other 485 error checking, self repair , and messaging the user to precisely what went wrong)

Aargh, it's giving me "Documentation not found" for JavaScript functions

Bob
@DragonLord What, built-ins?

Yeah

Bob
@DragonLord Maybe give it a bit of time to build the cache and try again?
You can hit Ctrl+Space to pop up docs for the call under the cursor.

4:51 AM
it is because you bought the wrong manual

Apparently, NetBeans doesn't recognize alert().

Bob
...don't use alert
You should almost never use it.
There are very few instances where it's really a good idea.

The book is telling me to use it.
I'm just getting started.

forget everything you know, play a MP3 of "Whole new world"

Bob
If you want to get debugging output, use console.log and view it there.
If you want to display messages to the user, put it in a nice div, maybe floating to simulate a nice formatted dialog (lots of frameworks include such functionality).
@DragonLord If you're just testing short snippets, try the Scratchpad in FF (Shift+F4) or even just running them straight in the console REPL.
Very useful for testing something quickly, to see what the result of some snippet is.

4:59 AM

Bob
alert for debugging is just a bad idea. console.log lets you inspect the result in detail - you can expand and inspect the contents of arrays and objects.

Or just set up a break point ?

This is just an example out of a book.

Bob
@HackToHell Breakpoints can be more tedious, especially if you start looking at events.
@DragonLord Ya, just something to keep in mind if the book itself doesn't mention it - there's almost always a better way than an alert.
Though I won't deny it's faster if you just want to get something really simple out.

Yeah, but I you log a largish variable, the entire console gets filled out
That's probably not the proper way to do it but meh ;p

Bob
5:03 AM
alert-abuse isn't quite as bad now that browsers generally make it non-modal, but it's still not great.
@HackToHell Then your console sucks.

uncaught exception: out of memory
Seriously, Firefox?

Bob
@DragonLord What are you trying to run?

Just that page.
Firefox Developer Edition 39.0a2.

Bob
And? What is that page?

The only script it has is one that fires that alert() after five seconds.

Bob
5:06 AM
shrug
Thar be a browser bug.
Congrats. Now go file the bug? :P

I see nothing out of the ordinary in terms of memory use.

Bob
@DragonLord If you can reproduce it, go file a bug and provide the SSCCE.

Okay, it happens on hitting refresh with the alert open.
Might be some weird SpiderMonkey issue.

I'm bored ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Join @DragonLord in his quest for knowledge? :P

I'm probably digging up a novel from my stash of them.
(And this is why getting a kindle is probably a good idea ;p)

@DragonLord Tried any other IDE ?

@HackToHell Why do you ask?

I am looking for a good node.js IDE
currently I do it manually
Using Np++

7:33 AM
@Bob Yeah it sucks :/

hm.
Apparently my bank will reject any purchases that don't have a CVV code
And I only found out when I called them
(Had to get my mom to help pay for my kindle, and will be paying her cash)
This is a good thing but it would be nice if I got told why.
... really? amazon.in allows it.

7:58 AM
Allows what o0

Cvv codes. :p
I just asked my mom to use her card to pay for my kindle and will be paying her back :p
Er. Context. Ordered a kindle. Payment got rejected. Called my bank and they said it's due to the lack of cvv code.

Bob
8:25 AM
@HackToHell Visual Studio + NTVS.
I was doing a whole proj with it last night.
It's pretty damn good.
Code completion and linting works well. Debugger works, but can be a bit quirky (you need to pause+continue it at the beginning sometimes, otherwise it waits forever).
Well, code completion works until you try to use bluebird... then everything dies.

@Bob Trying it out
Visual Studio Code is also buggy as hell
It keeps crashing

Bob
@HackToHell What part of "prerelease"/"preview" do you not understand?

That's why I didn't mention it
:P

Bob
Anyway, stick NTVS onto VSCommunity2013

Until now
I have VS professional 2013

Bob
8:30 AM
@HackToHell Good enough.
Make sure it's up to date.

@allquixotic Yes, that's true. But that wrapper isn't so necessary any more. confetti

It is, it's at update 4
Installing them tools

> NodeJS (if the bot could authenticate using NodeJS, this driver would become obsolete)
It can now

Bob
@Zirak Well, no: you're still running a PJS instance.

@Bob 'course, but you don't need to wrap it in selenium

Bob
8:33 AM
You'd just be replacing the Java/Selenium driver with a NodeJS/Nightmare driver.
@Zirak There's no wrapping going on.

It'll be a heck lightweightier too, and look, no Java
Less Java in the world makes it happier

Bob
@Zirak When we were talking about doing it on NodeJS, we were talking about native NodeJS, not inside a headless browser controlled via NodeJS.
Kinda gave up on that one, though. Stupid OpenID.

But that's really annoying ~_~

Bob
@Zirak Guess why we gave up? :P

I'm pseudo-working on it in parallel, but, ehrm, yeah

Bob
8:36 AM
@Zirak Well, there are other scripts that already handle auth.
But that particular one is poisoned GPL'd.

oh, we've made several scripts which authenticate

Bob
Hm? Then what's the blocker?

The problem isn't exactly authentication, it's what to do next, which is rewrite the entire bot.

Bob
o.O
I thought most of it didn't rely on the DOM?

It's mostly the BOM, the chat's global variables, and abusing the fact that browsers do most of the credential work for us

Bob
8:39 AM
Ah...

Bob
9:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek I hate having to fill in forms on glossy paper -_-
Forget the FP, the rollerball smudges.
Forget the rollerball, the Bic ballpoint smudges.

lol
"flossy"?

Bob
Forget the ballpoint, I'm pretty sure an HB pencil would smudge.
@JourneymanGeek What are you talking about? :P

lol
Felt tip, permanant. fine point? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I might have to try that next!
Hm... I wonder if the bulletproof black FP ink would work.

Or a rotoring.

Bob
9:31 AM
Probably not; that requires cellulose contact
stupid glossy coating
@JourneymanGeek rotoring?

I might be getting the name wrong

Bob
rotring? that's a brand

micron markers ._.

> water-based pigment ink
pretty sure that'd smudge everywhere

;p
If they did, artists wouldn't love em ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek This is some ridiculously glossy paper.
Pretty sure it's glossier than photo paper.
It's almost like it's laminated.
@JourneymanGeek also, I don't think I can find them here o.O

They're oddly common here
But I get em at popular

Bob
9:36 AM
popular?

local bookstore, they tend to have a annoyingly large textbook collection and a suprisingly good stationary section.
They suck for books tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I suppose maybe this
@JourneymanGeek Apparently it's close enough! :P
O_O
Apparently there's Zig too. I have a Zig calligraphy pen here... no idea where it came from!

Bob
it claims 'archival quality pigment ink' too... might as well try it
noooooope smudges everywhere

;p
SO much for that.

Bob
9:44 AM
artline fineliner is a no too
what else do I have....
gel pens, glitter pen? O_O

fine tip oil based maker?
gel is out

Bob
(I haven't looked in this particular drawer in years)

glitter is for tweens gel based.

Bob
yay!
the bic ultra fine point permanent markers don't smudge
now I just need to find the black one
got red and blue -_-
pretty sure I took the black out to use it but it went missing at some point
hm. apparently by 'missing' I really meant 'in my normal stationery stand'
also, I'm apparently blind
perfect
thanks for the hint @JourneymanGeek :P
might still go try out a unipin sometime though

yw. I'm a dog o many talents ;p

Bob
9:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek I honestly have no idea where those are from
there's a cerealboxpen in here too
and a dozen different mechanical pencils

If I do, its probably my mom's ;p
ugh. I need to find my 3b lead.

Bob
o.O
I normally use HB
had some 2B, but even that was a bit too smudgey for my liking
I think I had a tube of 3B at one point... never used it and now I have no idea where it is

I love 3b ;p
(3b + decent printer paper is what I used to take notes on)

Q: How can I color all events that match a certain criteria?

Oliver SalzburgI have calendar entries for all SSL certificates we manage, so that I get a reminder when I need to renew them. I would like to set all those calendar entries to a specific color, but I can't find an option that would make this easy. The only way I found was to search for "SSL EXPIRE" (which is...

Help! :D

10:04 AM
have you tried turning off and on.... oh wait.

Bob
so, I want blotting paper. I search for blotting paper (ebay, amazon)... annnnnd it's all makeup stuff

@JourneymanGeek Are you familiar with earbuds that you can comfortably use while sleeping?

._.
No? Cause that would ruin my ears.

@JourneymanGeek I use Skullcandies and they are not really comfortable.
I thought to find something that is better and sturdier.

Bob
If you want in-ear, the Pistons are alright. But it really depends on your ear shape.
Earbuds tend to be more comfortable while lying down

10:47 AM
I suppose
but the pistons have a wee bit of weight.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek how's the rollerball pen going (Noodler)?

I don't write much since I graduated ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I meant from the perspective of pushing into your ears (I sleep on my side)
@JourneymanGeek :\
apparently refillable rollerballs tend to have a use limit - the ball wears out

That's pretty normal.
heh. Google takeout is cool. Turns out I can download all the books I uploaded from it.

Would you continue using it?

oh damn

depends on the noises tho

Unfortunately we can't anymore. Noodler's used to offer them, but the price of the rollerball tips skyrocketed and they dropped them. These pens are actually discontinued as well, as a result, but there is still a good stock of them so they'll be around for a bit.

They've caught fire before.

@JourneymanGeek Like, squeeking, weird high pitched noises

11:13 AM
(Actually I had a model that did that ;p)

I already got a replacement from the seller

ahh, then crack it open and see where the noise is from?

lol
Well...
I guess I could
The email conversation with the seller was pretty fun. They basically told me "Oh, that's nothing to worry about. But we'll send you our new model of that bank. Keep the other one as well"
But electrical components that make weird, unexpected noises do worry me

news.asiaone.com/news/digital1/… I used to own one of thse.
naturally

This is the one they just sent me: amzn.com/B00MQSMEEE
The one that's making noises was the 2nd gen

O_O
huh, I was considering buying one of these chargers:
> The charger may short circuit under sustained heavy charging.
how does that even happen?!
and then there's this USB -> Lightning cable:
> What are the defects?
A manufacturing defect causes failure of the cable's USB connection.
What are the hazards?
If the defect occurs, it causes overheating and melting of the USB connection's plastic housing and poses a fire hazard to consumers.
LOL
@JourneymanGeek what do you think of Platignum pens? ebay.com.au/itm/…
:P

.....
I'm dyslexic and I KNOW that's spelled wrong ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek nono, that's spelled right
look at the packaging!

11:32 AM
:D

Bob
This is genuine Platignum!

clearly
Would anyone even bother to fake that? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek all the cheap rollerballs are gone :(

:/
I wonder if you could mod a normal liquid ink roller ... ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, the normal refills are horribly overpriced
I can still get the rollerballs for $14, but they're technically discontinued and they're not selling the cheap $1 replacement tips... and apparently the tips don't last all that long
all together, not really worth it
you had the Preppy, yea?

11:42 AM
er
Maybe? The transparent one?
or do you mean the daiso one?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The one that came with your Noodler's ink :P

wtf, Jessie doesn't come with sudo by default?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg nup. Debian is very minimal by default
@MichaelFrank huh, not bad

@Bob Okay. But it's not like sudo isn't cool any more, right?

Bob
11:53 AM
@MichaelFrank Wait, did I say not bad? What I really meant is this isn't cheap at all!

Yea, but this is for 12 of the same colour. :P

Bob
shrug I think I'd prefer the variety :P
@MichaelFrank So, are you buying them? What colour? :P

ahh, I think so
@OliverSalzburg: debian never did
@Bob: Probably. I don't remember XD

@JourneymanGeek I guess it installs sudo if you don't set up the root account during setup
And that's why I never noticed

plausibly
or you set up an admin account?

12:04 PM
@JourneymanGeek Well, I generally never use root on any machines I administer. When I do a fresh install from media, I always set up a personal account with sudo rights
But the box I'm setting up right now is a VM from an image

@Bob Probably not. I already have a fountain pen and a couple bottles of Iroshizuku

So I was a little confused

That beard.

I laughed so hard at that yesterday

@Zirak Cool! I'll probably keep using so-chatbot-driver out of sheer stick-in-the-mudness until it breaks again (some auth change will eventually break it, let's face it), and then once it's broken, I'll chirrup endlessly like a baby osprey calling for food until you provide me a fixed auth script in NodeJS in the main repo, then switch over to that.

12:45 PM
@allquixotic What if I told you the next push will give you a REPL in the bot's context?

I'm so happy
Monkeypatching will still be possible

2:10 PM
@Bob, @allquixotic: github.com/Zirak/SO-ChatBot/blob/… it's awesome, trust me

2:54 PM
@Zirak How do you even do that in node o0
Halo dotadino

Bob
@HackToHell read input, eval it, print output, loop

@HackToHell The file's posted just above, but phantomjs instruments the page navigation and such, and I just use readline to create a REPL and chug all input to the page's eval

Bob
except this time the eval is performed in a PJS instance's context
