Poor Ben superuser.com/questions/896008/memory-not-unloading To broad, does that mean that way to many other users have reported terrible memory "leak" issues with acrobat? That the issue is Broad for acrobat users :-)
http://superuser.com/questions/908355/computer-slowing-down-after-several-print-to-pdf-requests so there he is re-writing the question, based on users comments.
But I see it more like well if it is sucking up your memory all wrongly and not freeing, then it Will also be slowing down the computer.
I really thought he had presented the problem (question) with better information than has been done before at other sites. only to be shut-down.

1:23 AM
The same kinds of oddities had occured with adobeez video editing program premiere, for multiple versions of the program. A person could demo, and make small videos and all without a problem, but anyone working on a Huge Complex project with many many items, would experience all the flaws in the programming.
There were about 3-4 ways you could congifure or change the program to make is more survivable, then backing it up more often, and working in smaller chunks (to assemble later).
It was most wonderfull when I finnaly quit using it altogether. Have not looked back, and for some reason have not had those problems (that supposedly did not exist). The other softwares , with thier own problems too, a person could at least finish a project.

2:06 AM
Finally, YouTube no longer uses Flash in Firefox.
I've been longing for this switch especially because I often open videos in private browsing which means that my settings don't get applied.

@DragonLord Nice!

I'd rather not have to deal with going through a plugin to play videos.
Flash is old tech given that HTML5 is the standard these days.
Flash Player is also riddled with bugs.

I'm still amazed at .gifv lol

Kindle Paperwhite ordered using comgateway to reship. HOPEFULLY it'll reach them by the 4th since I have some random cgw credit that expires then ;p
Even then, It'll cost me 15 dollars at most to ship

not kindle voyage?
also, congrats

naw
The paperwhite has insane good reviews from actual people I asked ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I was pretty meh about it :P
@JourneymanGeek Whatever happened to the 3 month rule? :O

Rules are meant to be bent?
I decided to put off the monitor purchase for a few months

Bob
@DragonLord ...it hasn't for a while, even in private browsing.
Though, if you set Flash to auto-activate, well... don't do that.

2:33 AM
Not on my machine using Firefox for some odd reason.
Flash is set to ask before activating

Bob
Odd.
Pretty sure private browsing has loaded the native player for a while now. At least half a year.

@allquixotic That's awesome! I can't believe how fast that loaded ;p

(yanno what? I have a job. I can afford to treat myself to new hardware once in a while)

@Bob He got a job. :D

@JourneymanGeek I presently don't have a job but have recently started searching for one.
Hopefully, I can get an actual job offer within the next few months.

2:45 AM
@DragonLord: Only advice I can give is network ;p

I may have a phone interview soon, but that job may not be the one I want (it calls for JavaScript, which I presently don't much about and is therefore not listed on my resume)

Again, this requires JS.
I'm a C++ guy.
Guess I'll have to learn JS as soon as possible.
I was never taught JS, only HTML and PHP with a bit of CSS in my web design class.
:'(
The upshot is that JavaScript requires no special tools, just an Internet browser.
No need to fiddle with another compiler toolchain.
So many developer jobs seem to require HTML5, CSS, and JS these days.
Sadly, my C++ and software design experience doesn't make me as readily employable as I'd like to be.
Googling "C++ jobs" returns 36.9 million results, while searching for "JavaScript jobs" gives 139 million results.
We have been taught the wrong language from the start :(

Bob
3:01 AM
@DragonLord hey, I started here knowing approximately nothing about JS
guess what I spend most of my time working with now? :P
@DragonLord It shouldn't matter what language you learn first.
My preference is still C#.
It should be pretty easy to pick up any new language... especially if you're dealing with the faster-moving areas (e.g. web). If you can't pick up new stuff quickly, you'll be left behind.

I can probably cover the basics within a few weeks and understand most key concepts after a few months of training.

Bob
@DragonLord I would actually consider that a downside. A good IDE is a massive help, but the nature of JS doesn't lend itself to good IDEs.
@DragonLord Eh, not everyone is the same, but I personally learn best by doing. Give me a task, and I'll do pretty well just jumping in (given a search engine).
@DragonLord WebIDE is a completely different thing.
That's an IDE for FF mobile apps.

C++ is good for low-level stuff but is next to useless for real production applications.

Bob
also, it doesn't matter if something has "IDE" in the name or description - it's important that it's a good IDE

I can make do with Notepad++ but not having a good IDE will slow me down a lot.

Bob
3:05 AM
Visual Studio is excellent. Eclipse and NetBeans and the JetBrains collection are also great (personally, I dislike Eclipse's bloat, but it's not really a bad IDE)

How well does Visual Studio handle JS?
I have a DreamSpark Premium license for Ultimate 2012.

Bob
@DragonLord Oh, I'm mostly in NetBeans these days... but, again, we run into the problem with JS
it's hard for IDEs to figure out how JS references work
especially if you start using something like RequireJS and dynamically loading other modules

Oh, well. Guess it's time for me to get a copy of NetBeans.

Bob
VS2013 added support for RequireJS specifically, but I haven't managed to get that working - and it won't necessarily work for different implementations either

I'll probably phase out Code::Blocks soon, it's installed on my machine but I almost never use it.

Bob
3:08 AM
@DragonLord I'm only in there cause I'm also dealing with Java

I tried Eclipse a while back and didn't like it.

Bob
there's (supposedly) better pure-JS IDEs out there
@DragonLord I definitely prefer NB over Eclipse
If you want to try pure-JS IDEs, WebStorm is supposed to be good.
There's also Brackets, though I found it a bit lacking
Browser dev tools help, and tend to have a better idea of how everything links together, but it's also painful working purely in that environment
And of course you can just stick to a basic code editor. An IDE isn't really required. But they do help when you're dealing with a massive preexisting codebase.

I do have Firefox Developer Edition and this makes things easier

Bob
I do find they help.

I can make do with Notepad++ but not having a good IDE will slow me down a lot.

Bob
3:10 AM
@DragonLord "Firefox Developer Edition" is no different from normal FF. It's basically rebranded Aurora.
The same devtools (1-2 versions behind, of course) are in the stable release.

I did notice the tools were backported.
Do I need a webserver to do serious webapp dev work?
I have one but would prefer not to have to use it.

Bob
@DragonLord Depends what kind of webapp.
These days, webapps are moving to be more client-sided, but you still need some level of server-side support, generally.
@DragonLord ...huh?

I know PHP requires it (and my PHP coursework was done on my Linode).

Bob
Oh, you need a webserver as in the software, but not necessarily a physical server.

@Bob During development.

Bob
3:13 AM
You can pretty happily dev with just a webserver running on your local machine.

I'll look into setting up a subdomain for experimental stuff.
It would take no additional infrastructure.

Bob
You could create a HTML+JS+CSS "webapp" running off the local filesystem, but then you run into cross-origin issues (XHR requests are not allowed to file:// resources), and that's quite painful
@DragonLord In fact, a local webserver is much easier.
You can attach a debugger directly. Changes are reflected immediately.

Well, Firefox provides a debugger.

Bob
@DragonLord I meant for debugging the server-side components.

I'll probably install Firebug onto my Firefox Developer Edition profile. (I don't want to clutter up my normal browsing.)

Bob
3:18 AM
I haven't touched Firebug in years

Does NetBeans need the JDK?

Bob
Yea.
@DragonLord Figure out what you want to do first.
What do you want to create?

This is for personal learning.

Bob
You still need something you want to create.

I need a functional knowledge of Web technologies.

Bob
3:20 AM
Learning without a direction gets old fast.

I don't stand a good chance of getting a job without knowing HTML5, CSS3, or JS.
I have some experience with the former two but not enough to get a job.

Bob
@DragonLord Why not?

This is why I never could get into programming. I had nothing I wanted to create.

Bob
There's plenty of jobs, including programming jobs, that have nothing to do with webdev.

Webdev is one of the fastest growing development sectors, if not the fastest.
Most of the developer jobs I've seen call for this stuff.
Having an MS in Computer Science means nothing if you can't get a job.
(I'm approaching the end of my second graduate semester right now.)
I've just started downloading NetBeans 8 with HTML5 & PHP.
(Java 8 Update 31 is installed on my machine, but not the JDK.)

3:27 AM
You could always become a medical doctor instead :-)
they dont even have to know how to write

yup
Java has nothing to do with js ;p

@JourneymanGeek I know, just wondering if it was needed for NetBeans.

Nope
All you really need is a trust blaster good text editor and a web browser ;p
If you're doing server side js (which seems to be the hipster thing now) add node.js/io.js to the mix

28 mins ago, by DragonLord
I can make do with Notepad++ but not having a good IDE will slow me down a lot.

That really depends on how much effort you spend to learn the IDE features.

3:34 AM
Its not like you need to compile js ;p
And don't forget your web browser probably has a fully functional js console.

I'm already aware of that.
39 mins ago, by DragonLord
The upshot is that JavaScript requires no special tools, just an Internet browser.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Context-sensitive autocomplete is a massive aid.

Gah... password change day is a nightmare -_-

Bob
Not to mention parameter tooltips.

I'm not a coder I guess. I think highlighting is pretty cool ;p

Bob
3:39 AM
@DragonLord Most languages can be written in with just a text editor and usually a pretty simple compiler. It's when you get to complex projects that it all falls apart.

@Bob I know. I've experienced IntelliSense first-hand and I'm far less effective without it.

Dosen't the new vs thing do intellisense?

Bob
For JS, you do have builds and minification.

After all, I've written 1000+-line C++ programs in Visual Studio.
New subdomain added, Apache reconfigured.
There's nothing on it right now, not even an index or friendly error pages.

@JourneymanGeek Powershell ISE does IntelliSense and it's amazing.

3:53 AM
Error pages are now up.

Is this the correct place to ask about hardware? Or is there a better SE site/chat?

Feel free to ask here.

So, I'm putting together a PC, and my RAM doesn't fit into the MOBO.
Let me pull up the parts, just a sec

ALL THE STARS ^

4:01 AM
You know what, I just realized my problem.

please be round the wrong way, please be round the wrong way, please be round the wrong way, please be round the wrong way, please be round the wrong way, please be round the wrong way, please be round the wrong way....

I got CT102464BF160B instead of CT102464BA160B
One stinking letter. SMH

If it didn't fit, then you got DDRx instead of DDRy.

How was I supposed to notice that? lol

He got SO-DIMMs intended for laptops. That's why.
That's what the part numbers say.

4:03 AM
Now I feel like a total idiot.
How is Amazon's return policy?

@DragonLord Ahh, yes.

@DJMcMayhem Should be returnable, just indicate that you ordered the wrong item.
Amazon's pretty good with returns.

I hope so.

CT102464BF160B 8GB 204-pin SODIMM
CT102464BA160B DDR3 8GB , DIMM 240 Pin
BIt to late to post that now.

Why are the name's so similar? I can't have been the only one to screw that up.
*names

4:10 AM
no, your the only one :-) Before pushing the button, comparing what the manuel said , to what the description is , would be good.

@Psycogeek I doubt the manual would help here. It's a matter of understanding that desktops and laptops use different memory form factors.

You can often get the numbers off the "memory compatability" chart too, as opposed to the almighty crucial memory finder, and have all kinds of numbers to copy paste.

@Psycogeek what manual? I didn't have one.

Well they are all online now, you know the web is everything.

I've never built a computer before. I've been using r/buildapc to get recommendations on parts. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention when I ordered on Amazon.

4:15 AM
If it wasnt for the web, people would be wandring around in a daze, bumping into eachother, and not knowing what to eat. This is also called the Zombie apocalypse

Reminds me of a video I saw where people were carrying around their "Facebooks" in real life.

zombies have that problem too, no face :-)

@DJMcMayhem: pcpartspicker would have stopped that from happening

@JourneymanGeek Hindsight is 20/20 eh?

lol
Also I buy HW at oldschool computer shops a lot so... I just ask the shop keeper.
If he dosen't know, its a shitty shop and I need to find another one ;p
@Psycogeek If it wasn't for mobile phones... people wouldn't be wandering in a daze, into oncoming traffic...

Q: How to play minecraft offline in pc

RaadI have installed minecraft in my pc but it contains only multiplayer. for playing multiplayer I have to sign up a account by 26.65 USD. It's quite impossible for me. So what can I do for playing minecraft offline? If anyone know then please tell me.

The real question here is "Where Did you get a Minecraft Tag " :-)

@Psycogeek You can download the client for free...
Oh... nevermind. I see what you mean.

Isnt some aspects of it free to play too? then they start nickle and diming you?

It's been ages since I looked at their model, but I'm pretty sure it's just a one time purchase.

5:14 AM
Its a one time purchase, tho I think realms needs an ongoing subscription

5:56 AM
@OliverSalzburg just got cm12, feels good :-)

Dammit, Java is out-of-date and the auto-updater isn't working.
I also don't have a 64-bit Java Runtime.
Downloading now.

NINITE IT
also whoops... Caps.

ITS OKAY

6:12 AM
It's only because the NetBeans installer gave me a warning saying that I should get a 64-bit JRE for better performance that I noticed this issue.

@DragonLord That's a feature, not a bug ;p

@JourneymanGeek Why? I would expect Java to notify me of updates like it used to.

hm
(That's a joke)

The JRE installer just gave an out-of-date version warning.
Java is not something I check often and simply assume is always up to date.
Guess I was wrong.
Removing Java 8u31... done.
Both 32-bit and 64-bit JREs installed, 8u45.
Browser restarted, confirmed plugin is updated as well.

I guess it depends on how you've installed it
I did it this way: add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java -y ... and it's being kept up to date automatically

6:25 AM
This is on Windows 8.1.

well then, I guess you better switch to linux :))

Trying to install NetBeans again.
This time around, no 32/64-bit warning.

lol
Make sure ask isn't installed.

No, wasn't prompted for that as I used offline installers.
NetBeans installed, starting up for the first time.
Everything seems to be working.
Wow, all this talk about NetBeans being a memory hog is no joke. It's using upwards of 600 MB on the start page alone.
Not an issue for a laptop with 24 GB of RAM, but this was very surprising to me.
Visual Studio uses less than 100MB on the start page.

Bob
6:46 AM
@DragonLord 64-bit NB uses far more than 32-bit.

I know, I'm reading the documentation right now.

@DragonLord IntelliJ uses about 4 gigs if I debug something
@DragonLord 2....24 GB o_0

@HackToHell 2x4+2x8 GB.
System was purchased with 8 GB of RAM, added additional 16 GB as an aftermarket upgrade.
It's a high-end gaming laptop with four memory slots.

whoa much

NetBeans set the Xmx to 1 GB of RAM. Seriously?
-Xmx1024
Changing this to 16 GB.
-Xmx1024m is way too small.

Bob
6:59 AM
@DragonLord Not really, no.
Unless you actually have performance issues, you don't need to change it.
Netbeans tends to perform well with its default settings. There shouldn't be any need to tweak it.
(And I say this specifically because there's dozens of guides for tweaking Eclipse's heap limit)

netbeans_default_options="-J-client -J-Xss2m -J-Xms32m -J-XX:PermSize=32m -J-Dapple.laf.useScreenMenuBar=true -J-Dapple.awt.graphics.UseQuartz=true -J-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -J-Dsun.java2d.dpiaware=true -J-Dsun.zip.disableMemoryMapping=true -J-Xmx16G"

Bob
Again, that's completely unnecessary unless you're actually seeing performance issues.
For reference, I have 17 projects loaded, and at least half of them are quite large. No issues whatsoever.

Okay, changing it to a more conservative 8 GB.
Not sure what harm increasing the max heap size would cause...

Shoot doood dont break it before you test it at defaults, Then change everything :-)

Looks like it might cause added GC burden, which could reduce performance.

Bob
7:13 AM
@DragonLord Most importantly, NB shouldn't use anywhere near that much. If that happens, better that NB slows down or crashes than it impacting other applications.
In the event that it actually uses 16 (or even 8) GB of RAM, you've now lost that much page cache.

Setting to 4 GB.

Bob
The longer GC pauses was an issue back with JRE1.6, but it should be better with JRE1.7. Not sure how much though.
Basically - yes, you have a lot of RAM. That doesn't mean it's necessarily a good idea to assign it all to applications that don't really need it, when there are better uses (and 'unused' RAM can always be used as cache)
Now, mx is just the maximum and shouldn't cause issues most of the time, but then we get back to "what if"s. If there's a memory leak in Netbeans, now you've completely wasted memory up to its max heap size.

@slhck crossed 100k rep. That's... slightly crazy. Congrats :)
5

Bob
If there isn't a memory leak - I just can't see any legitimate reason for NB to ever need to allocate that much. So you see no benefit.
Some risk, no benefit = it's not really a good idea.

I'm struggling to even get to 20k.
I've been posting more answers than ever, though.

Bob
7:19 AM
whoops, was looking at the wrong profile o.O

cool ;p

I made several statements about ramping up my activity a while ago:

Skeet at times posts 10+ answers a day

Bob
@DragonLord slhck has the advantage of an area of specialisation (video, encoding, etc.) with quite a lot of questions and relatively few other answerers... and he is reasonably active in those tags

Mar 12 at 18:07, by DragonLord
10 answers a day doesn't sound too far-fetched, does it?

Bob
we also have relatively few OS X answerers

Jan 20 at 1:53, by DragonLord
@Bob, @JourneymanGeek: I'm curious if I can scale up to 30+ answers a week, 150+ answers a month without compromising answer quality or moderation work (think Jon Skeet)

Bob
seriously, though, stop worrying about imaginary internet points rep... it's a number, and doesn't really mean much at the end of the day

I've never really worried about my reputation score too much.
A few months back, when the ♦ was what mattered to me, I was trying to push everything: badges, reviews, flags...
I lost to Mokubai in the last election because he had far more rep than I did.
The diamond is still on my mind but it isn't a dominant issue today.

Oh lookie, using free webapp thingie of Azure, I can run Ghost

Jan 15 at 12:50, by Bob
Hurry up and get there :P

And if I push changes to github.com/HackToHell/Ghost-Azure
It gets updated there

Bob
7:28 AM
@DragonLord That was a joke...

pretty nice

@HackToHell That's cool!

Yeah and apparently they are going to add SQL support soon !

In any case, catching up on academics and getting a job matter more than anything else. That means I gotta get back to learning JavaScript...
Good night.

Bob
@DragonLord I've considered running for mod, but (a) I really don't do nearly enough mod-actions, (b) I don't really want to carry such a big hammer when normal community mod actions are enough and (b.2) I don't really want the responsibility

7:30 AM
@HackToHell nice. since when is azure freE?

Bob
IIRC @allquixotic dropped out of the race cause he didn't really like the competition?

@Bob No, he was burned out.

ah shucks

Bob
@DragonLord competition as in contest, not other participants

And if you have MSDN subscriptions, you get azure.microsoft.com/en-in/pricing/member-offers/msdn-benefits a lot of credits

Gotta go, see ya.

> Get started with Azure now using monthly credits included with your MSDN subscription (up to ₹9,100/month)
And I still haven't got my fucking subscription

Q: How to upgrade from Fedora 1 (Yarrow) to a newer version with anaconda?

KatanaI'm trying to upgrade from Fedora core 1 to a newer version. (Don't ask why I'm using core 1, just know that there is no alternative path I can take so don't suggest completely wiping and re-installing or anything like that). The instructions on this page: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgra...

Wow, what the hell?
FC1 is 10 years old.
Might be a very old production server, IT has its way of doing things...
One last question before I go to bed: How many monitors does a typical developer have?
I have two and it doesn't seem to be enough.
I have access to a third one if required but things will get complicated due to limited desk space.

2 at least. Atwood likes 3 ;p

I tend to need space for file manager windows.
This is in addition to the browser and IDE.
I can set up a third display but it's a low-cost 1280x1024 model with relatively crappy color.
Alright, then, gotta go. Ping me with your thoughts.

Well I do that
my second screen's 10 inches ;p
lol
10 inch HDMI capable screen, connected to a proper computer.
(actually I have a PC, a NUC and a laptop on my desk, and what's really a netbook in my backpack)

8:18 AM
you just tell us when it is time for the intervention. :-)

@Psycogeek: I'm good
I'm actually planning on throwing out some hardware soon
(the NUC's a home server, and I switch the screen over to the desktop if I need more space on a task)

Bob

> eBay and PayPal will be separate companies soon.
o.O
@DragonLord I have one at home, and I like it that way :P
Two at work, and I rarely use the second.
I make heavy use of alt+tab... and have little need to physically turn to look at a second screen.
@JourneymanGeek pretty sure I have you beat in useless devices -_-
But @OliverSalzburg probably wins with his massive pile of dodgy phones and tablets.

9:21 AM
@Bob oh. That's a in use. I have 2 older laptops, my old home server... And A mini itx piv...
Yeah, he does.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lessee... desktop, new laptop, old laptop, old school netbook, lenovo Win8 tablet/convertible, asus Win8 tablet, shitty Android tablet x2, RaspPi, that old PIII I still haven't gotten around to trying...
I guess the Kindle goes in the useless pile, considering I never use it :P

o0 so much stuff
And I have no idea what to do with my old pc
Do you have em switched on and charged and all
?

Bob
oh, an old PIV system too, but that hasn't been booted in half a decade by now
@HackToHell desktop, laptops, netbook and Win8 tablets are charged/plugged in
RPi is plugged in but currently doing nothing
Kindle... well, I last charged it several weeks ago, but it's still charged :P

I keep everything switched off, generates too much heat ;p
and i forgot about the two boards I have
I have no idea where they are o0

Bob
Desktop is on 24/7. It's my space heater substitute too
System Boot Time: 15/02/2015, 2:12:02 PM
proooobably should update+restart

9:34 AM
Oh, rpi isn't doing anything now at the moment
Oh and my tablet.
@HackToHell: the brix is my only 24/7 system

@Bob Isn't australia supposed to be hot o0

Bob
@HackToHell Climate != weather

@JourneymanGeek My laptop is the only thing that runs 24/7

Bob
See: crazy storm last week
@HackToHell ...I think you're doing it wrong

@HackToHell: the brix is more power efficient than anything else I have ;p
(And cheap enough that I can pretty much afford to replace it whenever I need to, if I had it backed up ... It isn't backed up ;p)

9:42 AM
@Bob It's the more power efficient one
And there's no air condition in my room
So if leave the main PC running, it will heat up my room :/

How to for $5 (each) get people to praise your product fiverr.com/search/… "will say anything you tell them" :-)

Bob
@HackToHell no. Australia is wet and hot in the coastal regions (where everyone lives)
the humidity makes the temps feel worse

What's the mean temperature there ?
It's about ~35 C here

Bob
@HackToHell ...remember Australia is a bloody massive country with parts in both tropical and temperate zones

@Bob Right, large country
Skewed projections and I'm thinking it's small ;p

Bob
Sydney is solidly in a temperate zone
Brisbane and Darwin get far hotter (tropical)... and more humid too
living near the coast reduces temps a bit but also increases humidity

Humidity sucks

Still reading how the top .01% will make use of this ebay paypal seperation to line thier pockets.
found this interesting thing "When providing us with content or posting content (in each case for publication, whether on- or off-line) using the Services, you grant the PayPal Group a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicensable (through multiple tiers) right to exercise any and all copyright, publicity, trademarks, database rights and intellectual property rights you have in the content, . . . bla bla bla, and everything OWNED!
While usually these 100% Hand-over all your IP legal statements are generally just to protect the companies from fraud, mis-use and from being sued , as the marketing they participate in is bleeding in IP debotchery. As you can see, like many other TOUs that have been written in the last decade, IF they wanted to, they can own everything.
