@Avery On the site as a whole?
That's got to be a lie.

@ThatBrazilianGuy no, the specific person

Anyone know any BBS I can access over telnet or SSH? Bonus points if it has games like Usurper or LORD.

@ThatBrazilianGuy lord.stabs.org
Can't really help much more – I'm not familiar with these sorts of BBS games.
I'm not sure how common these sorts of BBSes are these days.

@Avery The only way out of this catch-22 is to hire yourself repeated times!

@ThatBrazilianGuy @rahuldottech hire me

12:15 AM
@Avery Maybe I can hire you. What's your telegram?

aveao

12:31 AM
If anyone does reviews - there's a change in what you see on the main page. If a review queue reaches some threshold, its a red dot rather than a number. Oh new top bar, ignore.

12:47 AM

1:12 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Old

@ThatBrazilianGuy Hire me too, if you can, please

I'm not even sure if I'm hiring anyone, and even if I do, it's a tiny tiny job.
@rahuldottech I can't find you on Telegram.

Bob
1:33 AM
morn

Hi!

@ThatBrazilianGuy rahul2001

1:55 AM
hah
arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/… this is the one case where directional cables make sense.

2:48 AM
@Bob Are you sure the entire local storage has to be deserialized on every page load? My (admittedly uninformed and cursory) impression is that you can have multiple keys and store independent stuff in each
Or is the issue that the browser will waste a lot of time lugging around all the keys/values even if script doesn't do anything with them?

@BenN I'd think that would be browser implementation-dependent

3:30 AM
@Bob figured out what my problem was; it wasn't Adaptec, it was that something on my system seems to be giving an endless stream of commands to the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service for some unfathomable reason
I disabled and stopped the Volume Shadow Copy Service and my disk queue length went from oscillating between 0.5 - 1.0 to 0.01
background disk throughput, from 50 - 85 MB/s to 800 KB/s

Bob
3:47 AM
@allquixotic crashplan/backblaze?
@BenN That.
@BenN It's not deserialised, it's loaded into memory
I can't remember where I read that though

Q: All sites will be switching Ad Servers on October 1

Yi ShanWe will switch our 3rd party ad server from Adzerk to Google/Doubleclick for Publishers (DFP) on Oct 1 TL;DR: Because most of the work is on the back-end, you won’t notice significant changes. For those without ad blockers, you may find that some ads disappear for a few min on Oct 1 during the t...

so this is a thing. Its probably a non issue (most of us use adblock, right?) buuuuut, for that subset of is for whom this matters and don't read meta... ;p

@Bob it wasn't crashplan; crashplan wasn't running at the time

Bob
@BenN Oh it was in 2010 but might've changed since then: bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=58985#c7

I then started Crashplan and it's only using about 2 MB/s, which is a low enough background usage that my disk queue isn't saturated

Bob
@allquixotic Or do you just have a really short shadow copy time set?

4:04 AM
@Bob where would I check that? that VSS Doctor doesn't say that info

Bob
@allquixotic File History settings? idk, I only touched vss in vista and win7
Do you have it turned on?

off

Bob
> Thank you, but you did not help me at all. It's actually like you didn't even fully read what I wrote.
> Hi I read your question very thoroughly.
yea no you didn't
> FYI a shadow copy is used to create a image of your operating system. This is not my first rodeo!
yea no it's not
@allquixotic you're not using win7-style backups are you?

idk what that means
I just disabled it; I can't think of a reason to even have it on

Bob
@allquixotic it's used by backup programs usually
e.g. if I take an image with Aconis it should create a shadow copy and then copy from there
the idea being you don't end up with a broken backup when something changes mid-backup
think of it as a zfs snapshot

4:13 AM
just really inefficient because NTFS sucks?

Bob
@allquixotic it's... not inefficient. it's CoW usually
idk what's going on with yours, unless something is starting a snapshot every other minute
@allquixotic vssadmin list shadows

eh, I had the acronis doctor delete all my shadows
it was using 13 GB
not too bad

Bob
@allquixotic it only stores up to the most recent 64, iirc
it's more a frequency issue
@allquixotic Anything in event logs that tell you what's triggering the copy?
@allquixotic also check the VSS providers. the default disk one is fine but some things, e.g. Hyper-V and SQL Server, will add their own providers. some of them are a bit buggy
(idea being if you want a disk snapshot you probably want any databases in a consistent state too...)

I have a SQL Server provider
Visual Studio installed SQL Server Express

Bob
bleh. hope that's not it...
you can turn it off, but personally I'd not do that - I like being able to take consistent live backups :P
but then again it's not causing issues for me either
for servers:
> Do not schedule copies to occur more often than once per hour.

The default schedule for creating shadow copies is at 7:00 A.M. and noon, Monday through Friday. If you decide that you need copies to be taken more often, verify that you have allotted enough storage space and that you do not take copies so often that server performance degrades. There is also an upper limit of 64 copies per volume that can be stored before the oldest copy is deleted. If shadow copies are taken too often, this limit might be reached very quickly, and older copies could be lost at a rapid rate.
though that's just for shared folders

4:23 AM
Cool chat tricks, Scooby want snack!!

Bob
@allquixotic If you feel like finding out why, turn VSS back on and leave it for a day or two. list shadows and check how often they happen.

5:08 AM

11:16 AM
@Bob What's the manufacturer? We have a Samsung fridge whose manual is better translated than this.
I'm guessing LG?

Bob
@bwDraco ...it's not a translation issue, I just found the onomatopoeia funny
Yea it's LG

12:20 PM
lol
I thought the onometopoeia sounded korean

Hi. I have not enough karma in Superuser/Stackoverflow, but I noticed that an answer links to a severly infected software What can I do?

flag it

Not enough for that either. Post is superuser.com/questions/240604/… and 2nd answer of Super software
Old post, but comes up in Google search for certain keywords
Probably the site/domain has been hijacked

@I.B. I'll take a look
I remember that tho, their webpage was uniquely terrible
@I.B. amusingly, that's an improvement from what I remember
how/why do you think its infected?

installed it in a win virtual
went crazy

ah, lemme run it through defender and virus total. When it downloads.

1:32 PM
The erightsoft one then

Might want to comment too that this happened
Moab's ok, semi-regular and he might check up/choose to delete

Hello all! I see it's the usual suspects, once again! ;)

roar
Got a cross-country event to cover today, so won't be around for long.

@JourneymanGeek yaaaaaaaaaaaah, so I thought onometopoeia didn't SOUND right.... pun intended. That's because it is Onomatopoeia! ;)

Spelling and I have a somewhat cold/distant relationship, fed by misteaks and wierdness

1:46 PM
@bw to cover? waddayamean?

@GwenKillerby he shoots people for a living. With a camera.

@JourneymanGeek m.i. steaks taste lovely
@bwDraco brasilians do sports now? ;)

@GwenKillerby he's 'merican.
I think you have him confused with @ThatBrazilianGuy

@JourneymanGeek yes i have
i just watched Alphaville (1965), so there
@JourneymanGeek @bwDraco quick question, don't feel insulted: Is it possible to see Event ID 259 from the EventViewer on the OTHER logical drive?

errrrrrr
No idea

1:52 PM
It's really slim pickings and you two seem reasonbly smart, so there.
i'm depressed

I don't think anyone would know what it is off the top of their head

I found a rescue disk that has a partition manager that CAN shrink it, but all you people have got me truly scared to do that @JourneymanGeek @bwDraco

and I haven't done that sorta stuff in quite a while
@GwenKillerby we're cautious ;p
we also rarely lose data.

@JourneymanGeek @bwDraco @BenN Ha ha very funny. In that vein, just for kicks: superuser.com/questions/1255076/… (just see all the cool updates! That's worth an uptick at least!
@JourneymanGeek @bwDraco i think the dropping of the laptop has something to do with it....

may... whaaaaat?

1:56 PM
???

dropping laptops = bad

@JourneymanGeek I'm suggesting this one Selena Gomez song youtube.com/watch?v=_RRyniZG0Jo

I think the sound-track here's mostly symphonic metal or taylor swift ;p

not really the point, but you knew that ......... click it.
pink floyd mixed raped by taylor swift, huh?
@JourneymanGeek don't we have enough of that happen to Mike Oldfield? youtube.com/watch?v=PFi0f8UOte0 Altough, this was Alan Parsons, so it's more like symphonic upon symphonic, which makes for good incestuous musical stuff..

Bob
@JourneymanGeek symphonic meta sounds weird :P

2:08 PM
@Bob there is no spelling misteak. Move along. feeds the evidence to someone

trying to work out if this makes sense superuser.com/questions/1255092/…

the problem of the millenial world is TOO MUCH META @JourneymanGeek and 'irony'
@JourneymanGeek @Bob @bwDraco @BenN @rahuldottech I'm gonna REFRESH my Win10 partition, any last advice?

brush, then floss.

@JourneymanGeek actually the right order is floss, rinse, brush, then do NOT rinse for at least 30 mins.

2:21 PM
HAIL COMRADE @ThatBrazilianGuy! AND SNOW AND HURRICANES TOO!

@ThatBrazilianGuy "HAIL" has two meanings ;p

> fall or be hurled forcefully.
@JourneymanGeek is plotting my fall.

I was thinking balls of falling ice
or "to hail a cab"

2:24 PM
25$ for whole ep
and 24 hour limit
lolnope
then again this will air on tv...

@JourneymanGeek Hail a cab?
> throw (an object) with great force.
push or impel (someone) violently.
utter (abuse) vehemently.
Are you throwing it at someone? Or throwing insults at it?

hail2
heɪl/Submit

"If you had a mother cab, she would be disappointed. Your factory should commit seppaku in shame, if it had a belly"....
but no, not what I meant

@JourneymanGeek I'm picturing a really smug dog in a monocle and top hat with a Brit Singaporean accent.

2:27 PM
english is a BLOODY ODD LANGUAGE

@JourneymanGeek English is so odd it won't even

@JourneymanGeek Agreed. I'd actually argue that English is harder than some Romance languages like Spanish and Italian.

@bwDraco english has a tendancy of multiple meanings and words from a million different roots

accurate

5:43 PM
Tis very quiet today ...

6:23 PM
indeed

...this is not good. Will Apple wind up with "Batterygate"?
Expanding batteries are always a bad sign. LiPo batteries tend to expand this way in the event of a fault.
A few devices, like the old Nexus 6, had this issue in early units, but this is the first time I've heard of any sort of systematic battery issue with an Apple device.

Urgh my freaking driverstore folder is 16GB. And Disk Cleanup won't touch it

WTF.
届いたiPhone8plus、開けたら既に膨らんでた
Eh, why was this onebox so big?

6:40 PM
I complained about it before
in The Bridge, Sep 27 at 11:38, by balpha
@Avery I'm going to observe this in use for a while, then think about tweaking the layout based on that

I'd like to see the images, just not so big.

I use a css to have them limited to half the size

A: Why is there so much fear surrounding LiPo batteries?

metacollinEvery cell phone (as well as laptop and nearly everything with a rechargeable battery) uses LiIon/LiPo (essentially equivalent for the purposes of this discussion). And you're right: In terms of actual incidences, lithium ion and lithium polymer are the safest battery chemistry to be in wide use,...

Links to explosion videos at the bottom :D
So yeah, bulging behavior from phones is very concerning

I know. RC hobbyists complain about expanded batteries all the time.
Quite a few RCers have had extensive property damage after a battery caught fire.

@bwDraco At least it popping the device open like that makes it easier for you to replace the screen. Might ruin the IP67 rating though.

7:26 PM
tis very quiet today because Trump, of course... ;)

how serious is the mac EFI vulnerability?

@GwenKillerby Why does Trump make it quiet in here? Is he having trouble recovering files and people helping him out on main?
@Burgi Probably no worse than all the vulnerabilities in the mish-mash of EFI versions that are found in every non-Apple laptop on the planet

7:44 PM
@Mokubai tongue in cheek, but hey, you never know, half of the users here might be putin trolls OR half of the users might be too busy tweeting against trump, or half of the users might be out there doing anti-trump rally's ....

@GwenKillerby So 150% of us are anti-Trump?
@GwenKillerby Or... half of the users are not American and try their best to ignore what is going on across the pond in the hopes that it will either stop or just go away.

@Mokubai did you not notice the OR?

@GwenKillerby I did, but it made better comedic sense to ignore it.

@Mokubai everyone tries to ignore Trump. But I bet you 100 that he will be re-elected, no doubt about it
Yes, you're right about the comedic sense. But don't give up that day job. ;)

7:59 PM
@GwenKillerby Can we do the same bet
I could use 100$

You can't all bet that he will get back in...

no like
I think that he won't get back in

Well I'm not a gambler, so feel free.

@Avery atm i'm in Japan, so it's 100 yen, but sure.

neato

8:13 PM
You're betting the world future over £0.66 / $0.88. I feel like this is Trading Places all over again.

hey I want a 100 yen coin that's all
I can pay for shipment :P

@Mokubai @Avery not to disturb this trivia fest but do you guys have any idea how to repair a dual booted system where a linux based OS is the primary and win7 is the secondary OS? I shifted the linux ever so slightly with GParted and now I get a message saying: **1. Error: unknown filessystem. 2. Entering rescue mode.... 3. Grub rescue> **

that sounds unfun.

i really dunno what to do here

can you see any filesystem with gparted live etc?

8:16 PM
@GwenKillerby Usually you'd boot with a Linux liveCD, mount the disk you need to repair, chroot into it and then do a grub repair. I've not done it for at least 5 years, but that was the general procedure...

@Mokubai What is chroot?

I'm mainly a Windows guy, but I've played with Linux

Q: Repair GRUB bootloader for multiboot system

user1715324I have two hard disks – one a 1TB and the other a 250 GB. I installed the OSes in the following order: Windows 7 on the first hard disk (1 TB) After that Kubuntu 12.04 on a partition (/dev/sdb7) on the second hard disk (250 GB) The second drive also contains an NTFS partition. Now, kubuntu's...

this is not looking good.
omg
lol whoops

@BenN Meh, none of my bulging batteries have ever exploded. None of my exploding batteries gave any bulging warning

9:08 PM
how did you know that your phone was about to explode?

@Mokubai DID YTOU SEE THAT?!
You've gotta be kidding me

o.O

@djsmiley2k Good run there.

@bwDraco that was the end - If I died on the cup, that'd of finished.

@djsmiley2k Sorry, no, had to go away for a while. what happened?
