@Bob saying saying it was, just was wat'ing
lol
@Burgi I LIVE IN THE FUTURE :O
@Burgi screen cap tool in windows. boom
@FleetCommand hear their lamenting whine as you crush them beneath your boot?
@FleetCommand You ask the last time he patched his kernel?

A bit random, but does anyone know how to download the context of webpage as plain text? Not the html source, the rendered view

print as pdf?

I ask because Im cleaning a csv that has html in it, and i figured the easiest way would be to open it as html in a browser so it would render away the html tags

I mean I'm pro linux, but for real reasons, lol
People like the guy you discribed are jerks, and I don't like Jerks.

Would pdf preserve all the characters and formatting without adding any weird characters?

2:05 PM
ffs... our hosting provider (the crap one i hate) has just responded to my ticket saying "no fault found"

My end goal is to get my csv, just without any html tags in it

@ROODAY ctrl C?

I RAISED THE DAMN THING AT 9AM!!!!!

@Burgi and now it's fixed lol

Haha that was my first try, but its over a million lines long, it didnt capture all of it

2:06 PM
@Burgi also, you have a SLA with them?
@ROODAY :/ grepping out HTML tags is a thing...

@ROODAY i have no idea, you could test it

Will try, just gotta wait for the page to finish loading

@djsmiley2k only the basic one

ok, sometimes I amaze myself
I fixed a laptop with a dead ethernet port o_O
by...... messing with power saving options on the driver o_O
it was saving so much power it'd turned off entirely

hopefully our customer will finally agree to migrate to a real hosting provider

2:08 PM
@ROODAY pretty PDF does have a 'copy text only' option
@Burgi Hhhhhhhhhhhhhahahahaha
@FleetCommand Also, I know it's not practical, but learn Linux better than him!

user226528
@djsmiley2k I do know Linux far better than him.

@FleetCommand then F̌̓ͬͥ҉̞̫̟̰̼̖ͅĮ̥̞̰̙͔̗̗̙̃ͨ̈̎̈́́́͜N͚̬͔̬̬̳̘ͭ̋̈́͑̚͢I̯͛̔͆̓̄͊̓͠S͚̤ͭ͌̉̆͒͌̉͌͟H̫̗̺͑̌̃ ̗̥͎͉̺ͦ́ͥͪ͊̏ͪH̻͇͓̩ͣ̄͒̀͟I̴̮͂͑̔͝M͑̊͏̼͔̭̹̙!̙̮̹̼͇͍̲͐ͯ̈̽̏́͘!

if you remind me tomorrow evening i'll write a canonical Q/A
Also, finish it.

user226528
@djsmiley2k His pathetic self is not a problem. He blabbed to the management and now they are asking about moving to Linux.

Crush him.
MAKE HIM YOURS
The management respect destruction.

@FleetCommand what happened to your colleague?

user226528
2:12 PM
@Burgi Which one?

the one who offered herself to you

31 mins ago, by Fleet Command
This guys comes up to our servers, pulls up the Event Viewer and filters startup records, showing that our servers didn't have continuous uptime to the management. Then brags about such-and-such Linux servers that have had 6 years of uptime straight. Next thing, the management is asking about pros and cons of moving to Linux for uptime.
Oh that one
He didn't

user226528
@Burgi Technically, I have no such colleague. Although I suspect I know what you are talking about.

@FleetCommand so she got fired then?

user226528
@Burgi No.

2:16 PM
you can't give us juicy gossip like that and not give us the follow up...

user226528
@Burgi I suspect you are talking about a certain colleague that did nothing wrong than getting a little careless with the word "c****s", a la Sheldon Cooper of The Big Bang Theory.

i am!

user226528
As I told you back then, she got away with a very stern warning, which would have actionable followup if disregarded.

1) did you take her for a coffee/drink?
2) take her up on her offer?
3) ???
4) profit!

user226528
The next day, I and her signed an NDA to the effect that we must peep not a single word of the event to anyone. I had to disclose that I did peep in this chatroom.

user226528
2:20 PM
The NDA was signed anyway.

user226528
And now, she is carrying some sort of non-lethal weapon, thanks to you, @Burgi.

wow your company sounds like a barrel of laughs
@FleetCommand hey i wasn't offering...

non-leathal? no worries!

@FleetCommand i think @djsmiley2k is willing to take one for the team...

user226528
@djsmiley2k Would you rather die or live forty years with no hand, no leg, no eye and no ear? (At least, not functioning ones.)

2:23 PM
Am I misusing this script? https://stackoverflow.com/questions/19878056/sed-remove-tags-from-html-file

I tried just running it on my file and it takes a while and prints out a bunch of stuff in console (some of the output has html tags) , but the file I run it on doesnt seem to change
Do I have to do sed 'stuff' file > newfile ?

@FleetCommand Hand, or hands?
same for eyes, ears, legs?
I could go without legs, fine
1 hand? fine.... even one eye and one ear
@ROODAY you'd redirect the output into a 'new' file

i've seen him try to crawl away from buying a round of drinks on bloodied stumps before now

script > new.file

@Burgi win-printscrn or screenshot tool, PDN to annotate

@Burgi ;)

user226528
2:29 PM
@djsmiley2k Aren't negative sentences supposed to use singular nouns?

@djsmiley2k Ok, thanks!

@FleetCommand I'm no Engish expert.

@djsmiley2k not sure if intentional...

Bob
I question SoundHound sometimes, I really do.

without a lawyer?

Bob
2:31 PM
It identified an instrumental version of My Immortal as Für Immer Bei Dir by John Cashmere... which does not appear to exist...
looks like that's actually a movie title?

user226528
@djsmiley2k Alright. But by now you should have learned a thing or two about the human society. One of those thing is: If a woman tase or pepper-spray you, without even being provoked, and then claim you wanted to rape her, no one is going to believe you saying you didn't want to. I don't want to put myself in that situation.

Hmm this is weird. So i tried the regex from the link i put in earlier here: regexr.com with a sample of my text, and it selected the tags properly, but when i ran it on a small file with a sample of the text, it didnt remove any of the tags. Does the regex simply select the text/is there something i need to add to make it remove the selected text?

Bob
lol and the video link from Spotify is ... Scotland the Brave
I'm so confused

Ah I think i found the issue, the tags have newlines in my file and the regex isnt capturing that
Is that an issue with sed? RegExr is matching tags properly even with the newlines

Bob
@ROODAY There are many different regex engines, and each engine has many options.
GNU sed has three engines available, each of which have their own options controlling things like multiline matching
That one expression works in one engine but not another does not imply a bug in either engine.

2:42 PM
@Bob how do I specify an engine? (RegExr was online site I was using to double check the expression)

OMG.... i was just listening to "Walk On The Wild Side", i never realised how rude the lyrics were until just now

Bob
@ROODAY In sed? Default is basic POSIX, -r is advanced POSIX, -e is PCRE

Ok, will try those out. Thanks!

Bob
PCRE is probably the most widespread, but even then it's got multiple versions and not all implementations are the same
most of the world these days is split into PCRE and .NET, and they're fairly similar - only the more advanced features might differ a bit
basic/extended POSIX is there for backwards-compat but generally more difficult to use

Hmm, just tried all three and none seem to be matching a tag that has a newline in the middle

2:45 PM
> In the backroom she was everybody's darling,
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
o.O

user226528
@Burgi You know, if you want, I change the ending of the story. I can tell you a story in which we ended up doing it under the stars in the observation deck of USS Enterprise.

Could it be a limitation of my terminal? Im on windows if that makes a difference (running sed through cmder)

@FleetCommand nah i'm NOT into fanfic

Bob
@ROODAY Probably because you haven't set the multiline options correctly.
regular-expressions.info is a good resource

So, those who know me a bit, know I have a relationship with a government agency (leaving that intentionally vague)

2:47 PM
Ah ok, ill dig around there. Thanks!

All I'll say is "It's Happening" sourcecode.cio.gov & code.gov/#

user226528
@Bob I know a better resource: regex101.com

I need an fake wanacry/reasomware for my VM
Do anyone have any?
It's a Scambiating VM Windwos Vista 64bit

it's been a year since they slapped us with the "You will do this" policy, and we're now getting around to it :D
maybe soon I'll be able to link to GitHub for code I wrote on the job

Bob
@ROODAY you can also search for your issue specifically. e.g. a quick search indicates multline handling in sed sucks and you're better off looking for an alternative => unix.stackexchange.com/a/26289/33227

2:49 PM
@allquixotic i think you work for the department for education

Wrong

Bob
@allquixotic wait isn't everything created by the us fed gov public domain by default?

@allquixotic the black ops wing obviously...

user226528
@Burgi Then try watching episode one of season 8 of The Big Bang Theory.

Bob
@FleetCommand eh, that's more a tester than a learning resource

2:51 PM
@Bob Yes, but to get around that, almost all agencies have at least a minimal "Public Trust" clearance to work in their software/information systems departments in any capacity, meaning that in order to see, work with or contribute to their data/code, you have to agree that it's basically classified
it's a laughably low classification, but it's just enough that they get around saying it's public domain

Bob
these testers are acceptable for throwing up something quick, but pretty poor for actually learning to write good regex
@allquixotic tricky

it's not the kind of stuff you'd get executed for leaking

user226528
@Bob It has a full Regex library too. See the sidebar to the left.

but it's enough that you could get fired

Bob
@FleetCommand a library of expressions of questionable quality created by other users... still not going to go into deep explanations of how it works
e.g. this is the first thing I saw in that library => regex101.com/library/omlmWu
and it's already setting off red flags (like not allowing a@mail.sub.example.com)

2:54 PM

tbh i don't think that the UK does that
i think most of our government depts are locked into proprietary contracts

Bob
lol someone wrote regex to check for valid UK postcodes
because a previous one was wrong
and then someone else commented saying this one's wrong too
protip: don't regex these things; check against a constantly-updated list of real ones (or don't check at all)

2:57 PM
@ave wot

@Burgi For contractual work, US government agencies by default require that all code written by the contractor under the contract umbrella is copyright (c) federal government

LTSB got updated out of the blue?
Is it even supposed to get updates?

Bob
@Rahul2001 ...what did you think the S stood for?

And I thought Windows to go didn't update?
@Bob but... It's supposed to ask before updating?

Bob
LTSB is, by definition, supported via updates for a long time.

nah. I might be building up a stack of SSDs though
depends how the next couple days go and whether I give in to that temptation :P
@allquixotic also, I wouldn't keep those near my bed... dodgy batteries and all

to be fair, I've got: borked Asus "Signature" Bay Trail that I wasn't able to get working again after I tried to install Linux on it (what was I thinking?!); iPad Pro 12.9" (current gen), mom has last-gen iPad 9.7", and in a drawer I have a still-working pretty-current Amazon Fire tablet that can play back Amazon Prime Video natively at 1080p unlike even iPads
oh, they changed it
used to be (less than 2 years ago) to get 1080p you'd need an Amazon device
now you can play 1080p on an iPad I guess
even with HDCP compatible DRM browsers on Windows

Honestly, if stuff keeps not working this way, I'm just going to use a WAMP distribution

3:21 PM
Hi folks. I wasn't sure where to ask, so I thought I'd try here. I'm having some trouble using the Skype Test Call. I haven't used Skype for awhile, but before the Test Call would play silence if the audio wasn't working. Now it isn't even doing that. Is it worth asking a question on the site about this?

3:59 PM
@slhck Okay. D'you know when you'll get the results? I'm actually kinda curious.

4:42 PM
@Shokhet Might take a while, need to write a paper about it first, get it through peer review, have it published etc. That could easily take months.
But if I can create some first results that I'm allowed to publish I'll post them here.

GAH!

the frontend dev has merged stuff to master without a PR

I'd tell you a UDP joke, but you might not get it.

We'll stop updating & distributing Flash Player by the end of 2020. More about our plans & a look at what’s next:… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/889878192994918401
> The company will continue to provide security updates to Adobe Flash Player until the end of 2020. However, after that, no web browsers will support it and Adobe will stop releasing any and all updates to Flash. Three years may sound like a lot of time when killing a technology, but Adobe says that entire businesses are built around this technology and will require security patches until they are ready to move on.
Once and for all!

@bwDraco Oh wow.
At work we are required to use IE10 because the version of Kronos we use still needs Java
So there are definitely still places that use Flash

@StevenVascellaro Kronos? I've applied for jobs on websites that use this. It feels really, really old.

@bwDraco The office is supposed to be converting to a newer version of Kronos soon which should hopefully work better
Won't require Java or Flash

Oh didn't see @bwDraco had linked it earlier

Seeing flash go is bittersweet. So many lost animatons

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Newgrounds IIRC has had support for HTML5 for quite a few years.

Lots of great games were made using flash. IIRC, Super Meat Boy started as a flash game

Newgrounds was smart enough to automatically convert all its animations to HTML5

On an unrelated note, Imgur's size modifiers are really weird

@Rahul2001 it gets security updates

I managed to break them in 3 separate ways using 3 images
I also learned that there's actually an official list of modifier names, and we've been using the wrong names for most of them

well that was real odd
win 10 decided my password was invalid (linked to MS account)
went online, same password worked

6:39 PM
Last Friday my work login stopped working. It is the same password for Linux sudo and various web logins, backed by LDAP. I reset it to something else. Next day, the previous password started working and the new one stopped. Next day, the opposite. Today, it switched again.

> the same password ... various web logins
RED ALERT!

@Rahul2001 Have you ever heard of LDAP, kid?
Or even Domain accounts?

@Rahul2001 it's a microsoft account
you can set it up to let you log into win10

idk it says i exceeded
check my last questions
Do you know how to compile C++ source code?

@Tobi You are blocked from asking questions because you ask bad questions. Now you come here and ask bad questions ...

I asked good questions, all upvoted, and im here asking a small question
which is why im not making an entire question on the website
I got blocked because someone kept reporting one of my questions

@Tobi You are blocked because your last 2 questions were downvoted for being poor questions. You also have many downvoted deleted questions.
