Bob
12:26 AM
the mac just beeped at me
like a really long, really loud, low-freq beep

lol

Bob
and now it's stuck on the boot screen
so, apparently, clicking update breaks macs
why do people use these things
4

Bob
12:50 AM
it seems to have recovered, maybe

1:03 AM
I can't remember Windows ever killing itself during an update

I do

Bob
@BenN It does at times
but at least it doesn't beep at you

That's a plus
Is the Mac working now?

Bob
I... think so? As close to working as it ever was, anyway :P

i just woke up
going to actually go to bed

1:39 AM
@Bob beep
Beep boop beep

Bob
2:05 AM
@Rahul2001 more like beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

Information regarding refunds for Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return is now available.After proper and several investigations and research at Western Union and
Money Gram Office, we found your name in Western Union/tax refund database among those
that have sent money / need a tax refund and this proves that you have
truly been swindled by those unscrupulous persons by sending money to them
through Western Union/Money Gram in the course of getting one fund or the
wtf is that

Bob
LOL
meta scam?

Bob
this might actually be hilariously effective

@Bob This English is... weird

Bob
"you got scammed so give us your details so we can return the money"
@Rahul2001 ... ... ...wait, are you taking it seriously???

2:44 AM
@Bob ofc not -_-
The overly complicated English is to convince people of professionalism?

Bob
@Rahul2001 I have never, not once, seen any scam email with good English.
@Rahul2001 Overly complicated? Overly incorrect, maybe.
It's word vomit. Or word diarrhoea?

@Bob Incorrect too, yes. But it's smart, using complicated words, and incorrect spellings. Makes sure that only the less educated fall for it
Oooh look another one
> Dear Beneficiary,

This is to officially inform you that an ATM Card that worth USD$2.5
(Two million Five hundred thousand Dollars) has been issued
as a compensation payment for all the short listed 2009/2017 scam victims
whose email address was recovered during the recent internet probing and
investigation process.Your email address was found among the list so we are
in no doubt believed that those syndicates must have collect money from you
through their dubious criminal ways.

It was on these very recommendation that the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
@Bob "you are a scam victim let us recover your money" appears to be a trend

Bob
I didn't know "United States Dollar Dollar 2.5" was equivalent to "Two million Five hundred thousand Dollars"

Wait I'm going to reply

Bob
That's a good way to get more spam.

The sad thing is, while this doesn't read like what I'd expect from a native US/UK/AU English speaker, it does match what I've seen some people write...

How much did I nail? ;p

Bob
It doesn't seem to be intentionally poorly written. Someone, somewhere, believes they've written a believable looking message.
@Rahul2001 That... seems like a rather poor idea.

@Bob lol, I'm kidding

Bob
Not least because one of my email addresses is actually kinda guessable by a human.

2:52 AM
@Bob ow

Bob
Which usually isn't a problem, until people start, oh I don't know, intentionally sending it to spammers.
@Rahul2001 That's not exactly rare.

@Bob Uhm, I'm not going to. Was poor attempt at joke. Srry.

Bob
first.last@company is very common.

Bob
> We won't allow any technology that takes away jobs.
You might as well pay these same people to sit around and do nothing.

I think they're more worried about AI going mad and killing everyone. Indian roads can be hellish ;p

4:26 AM
@slhck Working on it. Slightly annoyed by lack of neutral or N/A option in the final series of questions

7:40 AM
@djsmiley2k whoaa

@Shokhet Thanks for the feedback. I had to align these questions with a previous survey, so I couldn't change them. Also, analyzing data with missing responses is kinda meh :D

8:00 AM
morning

@djsmiley2k maybe
@Burgi write your canonical Q/A

@Avery :O

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

THE WORLD IS BROKEN!!!!!
is that 100% of 'normal' for the UK, or we're actually maxing out everything which is concerning?

@JourneymanGeek Hm?
Is it actually? o.O

yes?

@Bob ODDLY ENOUGH...
so yeah, I messed up

Bob
-_________________-
@JourneymanGeek I meant it in a more "Server 2016 is based on LTSB" sense...

anyway, itd 2012 R2 I wanted
noooow

Bob
9:13 AM
Not a "you're literally running LTSB"
that's just lol

If I wanted to open up RDP to the outside world...
what should I be doing?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Using a strong random password. That's all you really need.
More practically, you'd want to firewall off other things (like RPC), though those are off by default if you assign that interface as private

@JourneymanGeek You don't ;)

oh, its inside my network, so I'll be opening ports only as needed

I just got approval to post what a real hacker looks like

(that picture's from rahul's "starter pack", posted here before)
@Rahul2001 rate it

9:43 AM
@Avery I deleted it after like 30 seconds, so I don't think many have seen it

@Rahul2001 never ever beam down to a planet with captain kirk

Q: How to make a URL redirect me to a different URL

Dan S.I've already seen a few things about /etc/hosts but I don't really get them, so I'm asking for help. I just synced my Hotmail account with my Gmail but I prefer to type hotmail.com (redirects to Outlook) instead of mail.google.com out of habit. Is there a way to make the URL "hotmail.com" redirec...

!!wat

10:56 AM
@djsmiley2k lol. I wonder if this will hit HNQ?

how do you format a link in a comment?

@djsmiley2k Same as in a question or an answer, isn't it?

I dunno, how do you do it then? :D

[link text](https://example.com "optional title")

@djsmiley2k [text](http://www.example.com)

11:09 AM
Did we just post two different links to the same HP switch range?!

@DavidPostill You beat me AND one up'd me on document edition.

@MichaelFrank yah but you used extra attribute (which I don't think actually does anything?)

@djsmiley2k shrug Mine is from the chat help.
It's hover text, fyi.

oh wow
TIL!!
In that case it shouldn't be optional!! :P

11:13 AM
Sure it should, not every link needs hover text.

Someones gonna let the magic smoke out!

Q: How many graphics card can x2 700 W power supply run?

Ayoub BenseddikI recently built a computer for mining and, I am using a 700w PSU ( RADIX VII AG 700W TACENS TAC700RVIISILVER ) powering my motherboard and a gtx 1080 ti. I was wondering if I add another one I mean ( 700w or 750w PSU) how many graphics card they both could run, more specifically how many GTX 10...

computers are rubbish at mining
the dirt clogs up the fans
and they can't hold a pick axe

Put that as a comment.
Do iiiiiit

I was about to say, put it in a clean room...
Do it as 3 comments
one from @Burgi, one from @MichaelFrank, and one from me ;D

Computers are rubbish at mining, the dirt clogs up the fans and they can't hold a pick axe. — Burgi 20 secs ago
awww... no upvotes? :(

@Burgi jeeez
we people are busy not working

@MichaelFrank lol

Bob
11:44 AM
@djsmiley2k Hm. I don't think that's actually a shopping rec... he's asking whether a build would work, not asking for recommendations for parts. Or is that not allowed either now? (cc @DavidPostill)

agreed

@Bob Hmm. Reopened, but it could be worded better.

Bob
@DavidPostill It could, yes. I'm not saying it's a great question, just that it isn't really shopping rec.
Hm.
"How do I figure out what PSU wattage my GPUs require" maybe?
Though I swear we have half a dozen dupes for that

@Bob It's asking multiple questions - so leaning towards too broad.

Bob
@DavidPostill I think a comment on another SE had a great take on that - multi-questions can be alright if they're all very closely related
*shrug* I dunno

11:49 AM
@Bob Me neither, that's why I said "leaning towards" :)

Bob
@DavidPostill Hm. A rather broad but possibly relevant one => superuser.com/q/730481/117590
I dunno, my brain's too fried tonight to try answering either :\

@Bob lol. My brain is not fried yet but graphics cards/power supplies/connectors is outside my expertise :/

Bob
@DavidPostill Oh, it's a fairly easy one to answer (see quix's answer). It's just ... annoying to explain -_-
And depends how in-depth you want to get, I suppose. Personally, I'd want to go into details of whether the PSU is actually capable of maintaining constant 700W, GPU under load vs idle, possible connector heating... bleh.

12:25 PM
personally I'd just tell em to buy high-end Corsair or Seasonic kit, and say "don't worry it'll be fine"

@Burgi old news... June

i'm working through my tabs!

@Burgi Ah cool, go ahead

2020: Burgi links to an expired Microsoft link excitedly claiming the imminent GM release of Windows XP
OMG GAIS WINDOWS XP!

12:30 PM
lol

grumble grumble children grumble GET OFF MY ASTRO-TURF!!!
@allquixotic what does GM mean in this context?

@Burgi Gold Master
A software release life cycle is the sum of the stages of development and maturity for a piece of computer software: ranging from its initial development to its eventual release, and including updated versions of the released version to help improve software or fix bugs still present in the software. == History == Usage of the "alpha/beta" test terminology originated at IBM. As long ago as the 1950s (and probably earlier), IBM used similar terminology for their hardware development. "A" test was the verification of a new product before public announcement. "B" test was the verification be...
> A copy of the RTM build known as the "gold master" or GM is sent for mass duplication if applicable.

ah
btw... did you know they are releasing a Windows 98

@JourneymanGeek Do you happen to have a paint.net installer lying around?
The ones from the official website are giving me dll extraction errors

@Rahul2001 lol

Why does everybody have a fetish about MS paint? Just use gimp and some nice free screen shot program like ScreenshotCaptor.

@DavidPostill gimp takes FOREVER to load

@Burgi lol
@Burgi Yeah, but for annotating screen shots you don't need it :)

> paint.net
It's different

12:47 PM
PrtScn -> paste into paint -> draw your red circles -> upload to the intertubes

@Rahul2001 I usually use ninite to install

@JourneymanGeek ah, ok

@Burgi hotkey > screenshotcaptor > annotate > upload
I've used it for what must be 1000's of screenshots.

these "screenshot apps" all look like malware

Bob
snagit, greenshot if you have a thing for free, ...

@Bob screenshotcaptor is also free

Bob
@DavidPostill download links look incredibly dodgy

1:26 PM
PHP IS MESSED UP

Bob
@Rahul2001 I coulda told you that months ago :P
oh wait I did :D

@Bob no like
I just cannot install it

user226528
Hey there, superguys and supergals.

user226528
What do you do when someone pisses you off about Linux (or whatever OS) with his or her fanaticism?

user226528
Oh, and by the way, Microsoft is NOT removing Paint, per latest news.

1:38 PM
You mean like how some people say one OS is better than the others and you should only use that OS?

user226528
Oh, I tolerate that much. They are entitled to such opinions.

Example:
Linux is the best only use Linux.
Me I don't care really. (I rather use different OSes to learn the ins and outs of each.) Geeky Stuff!

user226528
This guys comes up to our servers, pulls up the Event Viewer and filters startup records, showing that our servers didn't have continuous uptime to the management. Then brags about such-and-such Linux servers that have had 6 years of uptime straight. Next thing, the management is asking about pros and cons of moving to Linux for uptime.

user226528
Moron! That was just one side of the story.

user226528
But it costs me my precious time and nerves.

1:42 PM
Even Viewer isn't it the Event Viewer?

user226528
I pulled up the Event Viewer and this time, filtered the shutdown event tracker, showing to the management that 100% of downtimes were due to natural power outage. And told them what they can do about it.

user226528
Guess what? They are still asking me whether moving to Linux can improve this.

user226528
People who don't know the difference between Keyboard and Motherboard are now my bosses!

What were these people thinking?
