@JourneymanGeek I can remember
it's pretty easy to recognize the modem switching to second noise thing
after which you can use internet

Our first internet connection needed 6 floppy disks to set it up...
Then we moved to a company called FreeNet and had free dial-up for a while (up to a certain MB limit, I believe).
Then it was ~$15 for unlimited access dial-up.

Update at the end of anandtech.com/show/11636/…:
> So it looks like we can confirm that Threadripper will support up to 1TB of DRAM [...] In order to put 1TB of DRAM in the system, users will have to populate each of the eight slots with 128GB LRDIMM modules.
By Ysmir, they are supporting registered memory on Threadripper!

NetZero d:-)

Now, this is not without precedent - the earliest of the K8 AMD Athlon FX processors, which used the same die as the server Opteron processors of its day, required registered memory. However, a contemporary platform, and a consumer desktop platform at that, will apparently take registered memory.
Not only registered memory, but load-reduced memory, which is purely for server use.

@Rahul2001 so I was on youtube today and saw the previously-on-adult-entertainment-sites video preview thing

12:21 AM
Maximum memory support: 1 TB (8x128 GB).

guess they're rolling it out slowly

...apparently not.
2 TB RAM supported on Windows 10 Pro.

why is it limited on home I wonder

Windows 10 Home tops out at 128 GB (which covers all current enthusiast desktops as this is the maximum supported on Intel HEDT).
@Avery Windows 10 Home isn't meant for workstations. If you have this much RAM, it's either a server or a high-end media production workstation.
Same reason you need Windows 10 Pro on a dual-socket machine.

I WILL SPEND 10K ON RAM WHICH I WON'T EVEN UTILIZE PROPERLY BUT I DON'T WANT TO PAY MONEY TO MICROSFOT TO UPGRADE. ITS JUST ONES AND ZEROES WHO PAYS MONEY FOR THAT

12:24 AM
It's just an $80 difference. That's pretty much irrelevant if you're spending thousands on RAM.

I never paid a cent to OS, never will
(I prefer linux)

Sure, sure, but I don't freakin' care about a $200 software license if the hardware costs more than $10,000.
Linux, of course, has no such restrictions, but that's a different story.

honestly even 128gb of ram is absurd, let alone 1tb
except on servers, at which point you should be using windows server or linux or bsd.

Intel HEDT systems have topped out at 128 GB since the Haswell-E generation.
Well, it used to be that 640K was enough for most consumers... :P
> ...this CPU also supports gobs of RAM, so video editing being very memory-intensive as well, you could go up to a terabyte if you wanted
So it looks like Ryzen Threadripper could be the basis for a whole new generation of workstations...
64 PCIe lanes, with 4 lanes used for the chipset. If I'm not mistaken, the Zeppelin die has a pair of x16 PHYs, each of which can be bifurcated arbitrarily if EPYC's capabilities are anything to go by:
So, this means that one of the four x16 PHYs (Threadripper is a two-die MCM) is always bifurcated; a likely configuration is to use the remaining 12 lanes on that PHY to support up to three NVMe SSDs.
The other three PHYs, with 48 lanes, could be used in any number of ways to support multiple graphics cards, NICs, etc.
This would make for a really sweet workstation build.
On mainstream Ryzen, one of the two PHYs is partially disabled; on that PHY, four lanes are used for the chipset while the other four are used for NVMe. The other PHY is for graphics.

12:54 AM
I wish I was a hardware nerd

Bob
1:40 AM
hi...

hi Bob!

@allquixotic, so, your thoughts on Threadripper? I suspect future games will be better optimized for this new generation of many-core processors...

@Avery ah cool

@bwDraco I think it depends hugely on the problems the game engine has to solve, which depends on the game's design. I use the term "problem" in the algorithms/number theory sense; any task can be solved by an unlimited number of algorithms of varying efficiency, but the problem poses a definite lower bound on the efficiency of solving the problem without making approximations/certainty sacrifices.
Most problems that can be solved with thousands of parallel independent computations are already running on your GPU on 2017 games, whether graphical or otherwise.

DirectX 12 and Vulkan can help...

1:53 AM
Not sure what you're gonna do with 40-some high-speed cores if the algorithms you're stuck running on your CPU are single threaded because nobody knows how to write them multi-threaded

Yeah. Not many consumers are going to find a use for 32 hardware threads.
AMD is still hitting high clocks on the 16C/32T part, which speaks to the sheer efficiency of the Zen architecture, but 16 cores is overkill for 99% of consumers.

2:25 AM
I could really use a local Lenny service at the moment...
Got this "Online Stock Market" company that keeps calling me.

Lenny service?

3:40 AM
Ah

1 hour later…
5:06 AM
If you're going to take our charts, please for the love of eyeballs everywhere, don't convert then to JPG. They're PNG for a reason! ☹️
lol
(in reference to people reposting AnandTech's charts elsewhere; JPEG artifacts tend to be very visible in charts and can seriously hurt legibility)

5:22 AM
I think one of the big things about Ryzen people are overlooking are the number of major design wins they got. Dell has a number of gaming desktops equipped with Ryzen processors, including the Inspiron 5675 and the upcoming Alienware Area-51 Threadripper Edition. HP also has a version of its OMEN desktop with Ryzen.

hm. Mom wants a desktop
Part of me wants to just build a NUC class machine with a nice screen
but that's boring :(

YAYAY!
My WindowsToGo Drive is working perfectly on school computers!

@Rahul2001 wha
@Rahul2001 ooh nifty

@Avery yep :)

5:38 AM
might grab a flash drive but then again doesn't really matter
as long as I have internet I have novnc and I can just vnc into my machine

@Avery I don't have internet often
Hm, enabling bitlocker

Bad idea
Especially on old PCs AES performance is low

@Avery huh, ok then
Actually no, I think I want it

It only differs like 5% on an ssd on a pc with the new aes instruction set, but on old school pcs it'll be noticably slower
Well, try it and let me know about the performance

@Avery yep, will do

6:22 AM
rolleyes
'We need you to copy out all the data cause we don't trust the people we just hired"
No no no THAT IS NOT WHAT YOU SAAAAY

6:34 AM
Ooh, odd problem with word

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "odd problem with X" sounds typical :P

One specific table on a word document is not copyable
OH
Quack
It was a duplicate of another one ._.

7:07 AM
So the original was copyable copy was not

7:49 AM
Hey folks!
If you have five minutes, I'd appreciate you taking part in a survey that I'm conducting for my PhD. Feel free to forward!
6

8:04 AM
morning
@slhck what is the survey about?

@Burgi "Quality of Online Video Services"

is it anonymous?

@Burgi Yes

ok, i'll fill it out :)

Great, thanks! :)

8:13 AM
what is your PhD all about?

@Burgi Quality of Online Video Services :D
But basically about how people interact with these services (YouTube, Netflix, ...) in case of problems.

so basically you found a thesis that allows you to watch lots of premium tv?

Problems like videos not loading etc. You'll see in the survey.
@Burgi Shhhh, don't tell anyone.

@slhck Done :)

@slhck lol

8:15 AM
(I do have an account from Netflix for, eh, "testing" purposes.)
@DavidPostill Thank you!

What kind of content are you watching mostly? has anyone said porn yet in the "other" box?

@Burgi lol

Lemme check.

@DavidPostill if @slhck's post isn's pinned, could you do that? ;p

8:20 AM
o.O

Damnit, I forgot how to embed images. Well.

remove the exclaimation
and the word "yes"

:D

lol, just the url

whatever

8:21 AM
YAY!
3rd time lucky

Ahh, chat being too clever.

@JourneymanGeek Done

@JourneymanGeek Yay, thanks

i thought about answering with "pr0n" on that question for a joke, kind of glad i didn't
all done
in the UK we have the BBC iplayer that delivers really high quality content for free

@Burgi I would bet that most people males who don't answer that question with porn are liars :)

8:27 AM
i say for free but its paid for with taxation of the general population
@DavidPostill whistles innocently

@Burgi Thanks. Yeah, BBC is doing some good research as well. Too bad the iPlayer is limited to UK only.
@DavidPostill Interestingly, that subject is almost nonexistent in video research.

@slhck Apparently not if you use a VPN -- I've never tried it though.

@DavidPostill I guess that'd work... haven't had time to try it either

@DavidPostill you will need to enter your license number to access the iplayer from 01/08/17
my friend is working on the integration of that project at the beeb

@Burgi Ooooh. Sneaky :)

8:39 AM
they are throwing up nag screens at the moment
apparently when they put the first nag screen about a tv license there was a HUGE spike in people paying the license... :)

@Burgi Does the nag screen go away if you then buy a licence?

@DavidPostill yeah if you are logged in

@DavidPostill ehh, that's a gross generalisation
in a few ways

@Burgi Ah. So you log in with the licence number and that will be compulsory after August?

yeah i believe so
it might be after the proms that they are doing it

8:49 AM
rofl. We do change request forms for our website. Someone sent me one without a form. I gave them a form. They were like "Its going through the process. My boss said you would do that" ._.
I AM TOO DAMNED PREDICTABLE.

@JourneymanGeek Really?

yup. Not all guys watch porn, not all stream em, and I know quite a few females watch porn ;p
so... groooooss generalisation

Also, I'm sure a lot of people don't want anyone else knowing they watch porn.

@MichaelFrank Exactly. They lie about watching it. That was my point. Of those people who do watch porn, many of them would not be truthful about it.

There is a difference between lying about it and not offering the information up.
It's not like they're answering "No" to a question that's straight to the point.

8:59 AM
@MichaelFrank True

9:32 AM
YAY!
Robotics components arrived!

10:05 AM
0_0
> " Not only is the laptop itself physically large and covered in orange highlights, but it comes with both a backpack and a suitcase to carry the accompanying liquid cooling unit around"

10:35 AM
@satibel What is this voodoo

@NotDog haha

Sorcery!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek sounds like what @allquixotic was looking for :P

2 hours later…
12:36 PM
Breaking the silence!

"That guy could give a headache to asprin"

12:56 PM
@Bob ??
oh. lol
nah, tbh I am not going to be able to fully converge until storage capacities are dense enough in laptop form factors that I can basically get a laptop with 2 M.2 slots, maybe a SATA slot, and get about 8 TB of usable space
well. might be able to do that today
but too expensive
Components that have made it possible to converge, in terms of approximately when they became "good enough":
Thin chassis design: 2010-ish
Small and light batteries: Pretty recently?
CPUs: Approx. Haswell
GPUs: 2017! (Max-Q)
NAND: 2016-2017, but too damn expensive, so not convergeable with my budget

1:12 PM
@Bob is $829 US a good deal for a Ryzen 1700X, 8 GB of RAM, 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD, and an RX 580? ATX mid-tower. It's not for me; the user is someone who has a computer that takes about 8 minutes to load a single map/level on SWTOR (my desktop and laptop take about 40 seconds), and has such limited power that his TeamSpeak buffer underruns while he talks because it can't keep up.
The expectation of its performance is "Can run current and previous-generation MMOs (which usually have cut-rate graphics vs. AAA games) at 1080p for 3-4 years"

@allquixotic tbh that sounds like a 3-5 year system.
tho, no SSD? :(

Morning, time to get some work done

i love mr scruff
he used to have a residency here in manc

Bob
@allquixotic imo 1700x is overkill
I'd suggest SSD and/or 16 GB RAM and dropping a tier or two on the cpu

1:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah yeah, but MMOs are mostly GPU bound (transactions from system memory -> GPU) and very smart about pre-loading data from disk into RAM... I don't think that's the bottleneck

Bob
@allquixotic do you have a price breakdown by part?

I mean, on my desktop where storage is at the speed of 2 x Samsung 850 Pro in RAID-0, it takes exactly as long to load zones on the 1080 as it does on my Alienware 13

Bob
brb in a bit

@Bob It's a "take it or leave it" deal; you can't customize it... it's a so-called Doorbuster deal for Dell trying to get ahead of Black Friday

i could do with a light no brainer job this afternoon

1:24 PM
the question is whether it's good value, and if so, it's something to seriously consider, because it's a full desktop so it's upgradable

hm.
@allquixotic in that case...eh, its PRETTY close to something I would build in that role. Not quite in touch with prices, but that does seem cheapish

1:37 PM
hm. This has me wondering about the mom box again...
(still debating between building a full box (and whether it should be ryzen + a low end video card or intel with onboard) and a NUC class machine
Pretty sure I want to throw a 27" full HD display, and there's a few IPS options in my budget

1:50 PM
I need some help with PowerShell
3
@BenN you online?

Bob
@Rahul2001 hi :P

(new-object System.Net.WebClient).DownloadFile('https://www.rahul.tech/archive/executables/busybox/busybox.exe','%temp%/rb/bb.exe')
Does anyone know why this gives me an error?
@Bob 'lo ;p

Bob
@Rahul2001 %temp% is not valid. you want $env:temp
also you want it in ""
single-quotes don't expand variables

@Bob ahh

Bob
double-quotes do
powershell variables are generall $name
with some special namespaces like $env:name
@Rahul2001 I'd also suggest using Invoke-WebRequest (alias wget) unless you specifically need to support old versions

1:52 PM
@Bob Ah, yeah, remember reading about it
Thanks :)

Bob
@allquixotic looks like a decent price, but not great...
also, lol, GTX 1060 costs less than a RX 580
If you were to part it out, you could probably build more useful for cheaper
(not strictly better, but sacrificing some CPU (no need for octa-core) will get you a better performing machine for the same price)

Good morning!
@Rahul2001 Is this working as intended now?

@BenN yep :)

Awesome :)

1 hour later…
3:04 PM
well thats annoying
i can't use airplay with my macbook

3:31 PM
beer o'clock!

wine o'clock!

Currently drinking:
> Australian Shiraz has forged an enviable reputation for huge unrestrained flavours. The Black Shiraz is an extreme example with deep colour and aromas of blackberry and plum over toast, vanilla and spice. Full flavoured and intense for those who like a full throttle wine
@Bob ^^^ Down under red wines are world beaters IMHO :)

3:48 PM
nice wine

Perils of the NHS:
I have an infection on my shin. GP prescribed antibiotics and said go away to this NHS health centre to get the wound dressed (never mind that the GP has Nurses on site that could do this). Said health centre gives me an (earliest) appointment **next** Friday.

I look at leg and think gangrene. I'd better dress this myself as my leg might drop off by next Friday.

Go to pharmacy to buy dressings. Pharmacist asks "what for" and I tell him my tale of woe. Never mind he says, one of my assistants is a Nurse. She will take care of it.
@Burgi It sure is :)

@DavidPostill is this your tale of woe?

@Burgi Yep. It's my leg in this story. I had a patch of dry skin that somehow got infected.
My pharmacist is a good egg :)

i now have an image of a weebl dispensing medicine

@Burgi Lol. I've known him for a couple of years. He is a really nice friendly guy. The sort you might have a pint with if you are into pubs :)

Bob
4:04 PM
@DavidPostill hm, perhaps... I've never been much of a red wine person tbh :\

@Bob Trust me, it's true.

@DavidPostill @Bob prefers castlemaine XXXX

@Burgi lol

4:24 PM
company party, afk

5:11 PM
hi

hiiiii
@slhck filled.

@Avery just bought Williams.business

@slhck My problem with online video services is having to deal with the infrastructure of Motherland Redactia.
@Burgi Yay! Bring us some tasty treats!

Huh? REST is the basis for HTTP? Isn't it the other way round?
Hey @slhck I have a question
> On which devices do you consume online video services at home?
Check all that apply
PC/Laptop
Tablet
Smartphone
Smart-TV
Where does a Chromecast fit? Smart TV?

5:29 PM
@ThatREDACTEDGuy yep

^
@ThatREDACTEDGuy do you think I should list thepiratebay as a video watching site?

I prefer "Used non-streamable sources" as an answer.
In fact, that's what I'm using. The answer, I mean. Not the pirate bay, or popcorn time. Filthy pirates!

@William lol

5:55 PM
@ThatREDACTEDGuy I guess, yeah
Thanks for participating!

@slhck I'd add a new category for streaming hardware (chromecast, miracast, roku, etc...)

Won't that mess up the results if you change it this late

@slhck Just filled it up :)
Goodnight folks

@William Yeah, maybe.
@Rahul2001 Have a nice weekend Rahul.

6:33 PM
@DavidPostill Wow

@DavidPostill Ouch.
Good to know it's sorted.
I have a medical minor rant where a private doctor refused to even look at me.
Long story short, I had a benign cyst removed from my head and a couple stitches, and it was scheduled for me to return in two weeks to remove said stitches.
I somehow lost the paper slip for the schedule and decided the bureaucracy and month-long wait for scheduling it all again wasn't worth it and went to a private doctor
Who said "No, I can't look at your stitches! Only the doctor who performed the operation can remove them!"

@ThatREDACTEDGuy what if they died or went on a 6 week vacation?

I was like
@allquixotic What if I was on vacation and was now back home? What if it was another country? Should I fly back?
Crazy doctors.

@ThatREDACTEDGuy ROFL
By that doctor's logic, if you developed a chronic problem while in another country, and got treated for it there, you'd have to repatriate

@allquixotic Exactly!
And he only had appointments once a week, I lost a week because I arrived late and other week because he refused to attend me.
By the time I had the stitches for 4 weeks instead of 2, I called a friend of mine who's a doctor and asked what should I do, he says "uh, you should go to an hospital now to remove it"

6:44 PM
Well, part of that appears to be a PEBWAB problem, with the lateness and losing the paper slip
Problem Exists Between Wound And Brain

Well, to sum it all up I went to a health center and literally approached a random nurse on a corridor and she removed it for me.

#BrazilProblems

@allquixotic Well, funny that you mention it, I tried to schedule a neurologist, the health center was like "no, first you need to schedule a general clinic doctor"
"Ok, when it's the next slot available?" "Three months from now"
So in three months I'll visit a doctor and say "Hi, I've been forgetting stuff like a 75yo lady with dementia, what do I do" and he will reply "you need a neurologist, go downstairs to schedule one" and the guy downstairs will say "oh, the next slot is in three months"

1 hour later…
8:00 PM
Hey, if anyone didn't know already, Jøtun is free on Steam right now
If you're into those types of games.

@NotAdminDave link?
the less I need to spend until 2k games the better

Friend just told me about it, I dont know the link for it.

yea
"Free Permanent Copy of Jotun: Valhalla Edition!"

just hit "install game"

8:05 PM
work would kill me lol

no
you don't have to install. that adds the license.

8:27 PM
hmm
how do i add it to my lib if i don't have steam installed :/

just login to steam on the site

i did
on the website

3 hours later…
11:00 PM
@slhck: thanks for supporting net neutrality!
