i guess it's not normally used in telly tho

essentially two peoperly placed mics
Yup!

as so many people have differently setups
whereas a cinema etc, you have fixed speakers etc

Cause no one uses headphones for TV
and you NEED headphones for binaural sounds to work

hmmmmmmmm
not exactly
you need a feedback system to tell you the positioning of the speakers etc

oh THAT exists
costs as much as a car.

1:01 PM
my old amplifier set does exactly that, it's got a mic you have to place where you'd be sitting, then turn it on and leave the room
it sits calibrating for like 20 minutes, making all sorts of weird sounds

oh?
nice

yeah they were saying because so much TV in the UK is now consumed on mobile devices they can try crazy techniques like binaural because people will be wearing headphones
the BBC have developed their own software to help the editors "place" the sounds in a 3D space

ah
ohhhhh

sigh
Data loss on one of my external hard drives. The FS somehow got mangled.
The most valuable data on it is some photos; luckily, I have another set of copies of these images.

1:08 PM
i just tried the demo clip on that blog post... fracking creepy and it really works

backups ftw

@bwDraco backups are great
unlike that guy who's posted a question :/

I should really take the time to sort my 2Tb of data. oooor... stick it on a compressed/deduped drive.

@Bob wow

@Burgi he actually needed to fill the 3 papers and have "EXPERIMENTAL" written visibly on it.

pretty certain thats not how cats work

The MFT is completely mangled. sigh

do you think the tea at the boston tea party was actually mis-delivered and the americans were just trying to return it to lincolnshire?

Man, XKCD is no fun anymore

@Rahul2001 i went "heh" at it but i agree

2:17 PM
I'm going to consider the secondary backup drive unreadable and reformat it. I'm not going to bother. The most valuable data there is stored elsewhere as well. Whatever photos are not in the primary backup are in Backblaze B2 (just under 100 GB); it'll cost me less than $2 to retrieve it all. As for the rest of the data, it's mainly obsolete, low-value, or stored elsewhere.

Boston (/ˈbɒstən/) is a town and small port in Lincolnshire, on the east coast of England. It is the largest town of the wider Borough of Boston local government district. The borough had a total population of 66,900, at the ONS mid 2015 estimates, while the town itself had a population of 35,124 at the 2001 census. It is due north of Greenwich on the Prime Meridian. Boston's most notable landmark is St Botolph's Church ("The Stump"), said to be the largest parish church in England, with one of the taller towers in England visible for miles around from the flat lands of Lincolnshire. @bwDraco inB4 in 2 weeks: FUUUUUU I forgot that one piece of data.

Heh.

that's a thing.

Sometimes, there's nothing you can do about it. Most of those files have not been accessed in many months, if not years, so it's not of much value. The only truly valuable stuff are the photos and music, and all of that's stored elsewhere.
This is why you keep multiple backups, not just one.

Bob
2:39 PM
floof
HDD trouble?

@Bob FS corruption.

Bob
Sure it's not hardware failure?

MFT got mangled. Could be due to a USB comm issue.
SMART comes up normal.

Bob
FS corruption typically doesn't 'just happen'
If it's just MFT, you can testdisk it. Easy.

The MFT was in a completely unrecoverable state. I just gave up on it.
TestDisk was unable to recover it.

Bob
2:41 PM
Wait. MFT. That's more photorec.

Figured it's not worth the effort.

Bob
Sorry, confused it with MBR for a sec.

Both drives in the dock got corrupted at the same time, which strongly suggests a communication problem. One drive was recovered successfully; the other drive was unrecoverable.

dd it before nuking it.
if you have the space.

(it's a Thermaltake BlacX Duet USB 3.0 dock)
Again, it wasn't worth the effort. I'm already overwriting the data.

2:45 PM
@satibel What do you need space for?

The drive's already been reformatted and I'm busy recreating the backup.
@djsmiley2k He meant a full disk image.
Have to go soon, got an errand to do. I'll RDP into this laptop to continue working on it.

@djsmiley2k Spaaaaaaaaaaaace

@bwDraco oh right, yeah.
Yes, but like I wrote the fact that an x-to-y adapter exists (for any connection) doesn't explain the direction of the adaptation in the average bad product description, i.e. whether I can use a SATA SSD on an M.2 connector or whether I can use a M.2 card on a SATA connector. It's usually necessary to judge from the picture and that's not trivial. — Karl Richter 7 mins ago

@satibel in some cases, yes.

@djsmiley2k Probably - your client thought it should link, but then the server said no

@djsmiley2k you can probably squeeze a bare pcb ssd in a lot of 15" and 17" laptops.
some guy managed to fit that in a w110er, so that wouldn't surprise me.

what am i looking at?
These are all useful trouble shooting tips but.... it's not an 'answer' ? :/

@satibel W110? Google search showed Mercedes Benz...

FWIW, this laptop has a looooong history of USB 3.0 issues, issues what would never really happen with USB 2.0 transfers. I'm using USB 2.0 cables this time around.

@bwDraco I never heard about Clevo brand.

As of today, Stack Overflow now deploys HTTPS by default on StackOverflow.com — as well as the hundreds of Q&A communities that make up our Stack Exchange network. We now redirect all traffic to https://, and Google links will change over the next few weeks.

Sounds simple, right?

But getting to this point has taken years of work. Four years, to be exact.

Nick Craver, Stack Overflow architecture lead, documents this journey on his personal blog in the post, HTTPS on Stack Overflow: The End of a Long Road. He offers a detailed, comprehensive look at the technical issues that make Stack Overflow’s rollout unique, as well as the steps we took to solve them. …

the rewrite rule in IIS had vanished

@Twisty smb is weird.
But I've never seen one that doesn't try to reconnect when you access it

4:15 PM
@djsmiley2k I agree. What made me mention this was the statement I ran across in this TechNet blog post describing features added in MS's version 2 implementation of SMB: "allow for connection to transparently reconnect to the server if there is a temporary disconnection"

yesterday, by Avery
PSA: New SMBv1 virus, update your systems and/or disable SMBv1 if you haven't already (note: link contains info AND samples, be careful with the latter)

@Avery :)
@Twisty oh, that just reconnects without the user actually accessing the drive
so they are never aware it disconnected.

I've never used SMB
I don't think I'd even heard about it before Wannacry

I used it
it's great

@Rahul2001 SMB is what lets you share files on Windows networks

4:27 PM
Yeah, I looked it up when I heard about Wannacry.

For example, we couldn’t switch meta.*.stackexchange.com sites over until they moved. The **password to our data center is pickles**. I didn’t think anyone would read this far and it seemed like a good place to store it. After they moved, .Url() would keep working,

@bwDraco holy cow - Seagate is an order of magnitude less reliable than the others
wait, they also have way more drives... so the failure rate is only a little worse

all we can conclude from that is HGST is very reliable :P

Q: Powershell GUIs (.NET forms), right click event on button

rootHow can right click events that occur on a button be captured? I'd like to perform some action when a button receives a right click. Below is a sample form: Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Windows.Forms Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Drawing $form = New-Object System.Windows.Forms.Form $form.Size ...

WAIT WHAT!? Powershell GUIs?

@Rahul2001 powershell is just another .NET language; you can do anything in powershell you can do in C#
you can even write entire Unity engine games in Psh (of course, the Unity engine will have significant .NET bytecode, the source code probably coming from C#, and enormous C++ natives for performance)
but in theory you could write an entire AAA game in a single .ps1 file, embedding resources as hex or base64

A: Output with the same length as the code

Rahul2001Batch - 6 Bytes xcopy^ Not sure if this counts, but the typing this in cmd will give the output: More? (With a trailing space)

Is this breaking the rules?

One could argue that it's not a full command, but rather a set of keystrokes
I'm not super familiar with how such things are handled on PPCG though :/

@bwDraco the w110er has isues with usb3 on windows 8+ because microsoft wanted to handle the driver themselves and failed at it.

6:52 PM
@satibel It's not a driver issue on my machine. It's a hardware problem that makes it abnormally sensitive to EMI, causing the connection to drop at high data rates.
Funnily enough, it's not an issue on Bifrons.

Mine works except on win 10 and win 8
The only things I haven't tried are bsd and haiku.

@satibel I need a favor.
Can you please find a way to filter out the output in that JS code?

@rahul You could, but there's actually no use. It's not a vulnerability as it's only local.

Anyone got thoughts on this?
@satibel I know, but I'd still like it sorted out.
