Why on earth would anyone have public smb shares?

ODDLY ENOUGH...
I back up my linux systems to another linux system over SMB over a non standard port

Bob
@JourneymanGeek btw, now your isp has more justification for that block :P

lol
They should update their list of bull**** reasons for blocking ports, yes
ODDLY I don't think tbe port blocks are over ipv6

OH YEAH JUST FOUND AND RESOLVED XSS VULN

can you now explain it to me? :/
i trying to learn :(

@djsmiley2k my ISP has a set of port blocks for 90s era worms

@djsmiley2k Sure

@JourneymanGeek :(
@JourneymanGeek it sounds almost like they had some old sysadmin who blocked things

Basically I have code for the chatroom which replaces [a] with `<a href="

and they got rid, and now don't know how to unblock xD

@djsmiley2k and then he retired and the rest are mostly clueless

@djsmiley2k But a user could type in [a]javascript:window.alert(message);, and the inline JS would get executed if anyone clicked on the link
So I filtered out any links starting with javascript:

wtf. Rate limited again. All I was doing was working the CV queue ...

@DavidPostill How can a mod get rate limited?

@GypsySpellweaver Different kind of rate limited.
I think it's this:
There's also a limit for page requests per IP address per time period which I think must have recently been tightened (saw it twice yesterday) but I don't know what the exact limit is. — Martin Smith Mar 9 '14 at 17:44

ZypherThere is a temporary automatic ban that is put up by our HAProxy instance when you hit our rate limiter. It should only last about 5 mins. If you'd like us to take a look we'll need the public IP at the time you can email to george AT stackoverflow DOT com

I usually hit my "I'm bored" limit first ;p

@JourneymanGeek lol
@DavidPostill I guess you're simply too efficient. Time to get lazy like the rest of us. :)

@GypsySpellweaver It's probably because I've got too many SE specific user scripts installed :)

@DavidPostill Run the scripts through a proxy server. Different IP so different rate limit. They probably don't do heavy traffic, so the speed of a free proxy shouldn't affect them.

I think that's what he wants, yes. Not certain. Don't have to unplug the cable, just disable the NIC in Windows. Either in Network Connections, or in Device Manager.
Though I don't know how to get to either one in Windows 10 :(

10:00 AM
Hey guys! Does anybody know if there's a tool for me to initiate a scan in windows which asks for the scanner via GUI?
Pretty much i want to make a batch script that triggers a scan. It provides the scan location but not the scanner. The scan tool needs to ask for the scanner, scan the document and preview it.

Might be a question for SR...

Chat always messes up on slow connections...

@Rahul2001 Works fine on my BT Internet connection, so chat must be at least reasonable on crap connections....

@Mokubai lol. Mostly fine on my EE slow mobile tethered connection as well.

Problem is that unless I move house I am stuck with the UKs "favourite" (read "crappest") ISP.

BT?
the 'default' ?

I hear Virgin Media are trying to be as bad as BT these days, but somehow they just can't manage to be that bad...
@djsmiley2k that's them.
All their adverts claim that they're the "UKs favourite", probably because a large percentage either don't know that they have an option or just plain don't have an option.

3:57 PM
@Mokubai Yeah, I remember - you're in some really wierd location right?

@Mokubai I honestly have no issues with VM
@Mokubai funny isn't it. goverment mandates they cover everywhere, they immediately claim they are the favorate xD

@DavidPostill Not weird, but a "new" estate. Bloody useless builders couldn't be bothered to get fibre in the local cabinets

@Mokubai you know vm's huge rollout about 10 yrs ago?
well I noticed they are nearly upto cabling my friends street, which was missed during that
so you never know, few years and you might be sorted.

And so now BT and Virgin keep on drying their teeth (sharp inhale) whenever anyone asks them just how smegging difficult it is to pull a cable down the street
@djsmiley2k just a "few years" eh? :(
I want my fast internet now.

@Mokubai well, by the time it's taken, about 10?
I believe it also matters how many customers in the local area enquire

Blah. Almost forgot about driver updates on the new laptop. At least Lenovo has a utility that automates this process...
This includes a BIOS/UEFI firmware update.

The size of the driver store has ballooned, but fortunately, there's a solution: searchenterprisedesktop.techtarget.com/blog/…

the other thing that seems to balloon is windows update stuff.

Also, try running schtasks.exe /Run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Servicing\StartComponentCleanup" from an elevated command prompt.

@Rahul2001 what was the problem? It seems to me that it only has an effect on the client, So it probably is ok?

@satibel yeah, well the guys over at the PHP room kinda bashed me up for it :P
Also, I should probably do something about it to avoid getting tons of bug reports about it

6:15 PM
It is only some js, so it shouldn't affect anybody else than the user. Unless maybe If you put ads on it.

@satibel I was planning on doing so

6:57 PM
Hello people. I assume asking questions about a Sonos and a router is off topic as there is no PC involved. However, I also know some of you guys may have an idea to fix an issue. I have a sonos in a pub. The router has a guest network. The issue is, when using casting media, such as tubio, I can acecss the speakers directly. Any ideas how to restrict this as guests (gits) are changing the songs.... and there is only so many times I can hear the birdie song!!! :)

Bob
@satibel No. That is not ok. That's how JS-based malware spreads.

@Dave I don't know what a Sonos is, but have two thoughts: 1) While there is no PC involved, on your end anyway, it looks like a problem likely to show up as the Internet of Things grows. As such, the IOT site iot.stackexchange.com might have some input for you. 2) Use a router that isolates the Guest network from the main network, such as the Linksys EA6350

@GypsySpellweaver, thank you for the suggestions. I have a guest router which isolates. It's a TP LINK Archer VR4000
:(
I didn't know about the IoT SE site, so I will try there!
although any other suggests are welcome :)

7:14 PM
@Bob the example case is that I have some js on a static html that adds some user input to a dom element all on the client side, can that be exploited?
Because, yes user can execute js on his side by typing stuff in the input box, but he can as easily type it in the console.

@Dave talk to @Burgi - he can't change the songs at his work, and that's on a sonos

Thank you @djsmiley2k
@Burgi, I need you more than possibly any one has needed you.... That doesn't sound does it?

he may know how it's setup, tho he doesn't know the password

Sonos does'nt have a password... or he doesn't konw he can use certain apps to stream regardless but thank you. I can quiz him :)

@Dave tho, why can't you run a private network too, and stick the speakers on that?

7:29 PM
@djsmiley2k, when you use a casting app, you can access the speakers directly
I find no way to prevent this via the very limited Sonos interface/app

iif true
that's amazing
walk up to someones house
broadcast porn.

@Dave the nuclear option : python-soco.com on an orange pi zero set up to go to the lan via Rj45 and as an AP for the sonos via wifi. Make an (authenticated) http interface to play some music from a playlist you have. You could replace the opi zero by a laptop.
@djsmiley2k that reminds me of a defcon talk where they managed to change where they were so they could play music on any jukebox of a network, thus making some arbitrary song #1 of the year.

@satibel, that is very interesting! I assume essentially though this is similar to having a second router?
Regardless, the speakers are always broadcasting. Or can I lock the speakers to the router via a python script?
Also, the playlist is via a paid account on Napster

Basically, yes, you could maybe just setup the laptop/opi as a router.
The python scripts controls the speakers entirely, so you do whatever you want.
The separate router idea is to have something broadcast a password protected wifi that the sonos connects to, so only people connected to the "sonos network" can access the sonos.

yes... That makes sense actually
I am thinking the pub needs a second line so they can stream music to a second router...
Very interesting ideas

7:45 PM
nardole lord ane

ha ha, and I'll need to finally learn some python! I've been a dev for 14 years and I've never touched python... despite working on Linux based products

If you want a permanent low power AP check out the esp boards, they cost 2-5 bucks shipped and some plug directly via Usb. (E.g. Nodemcu/esp12F)
Also, they are able to do more fun stuff, as they are arduino compatible.
So, weird stuff, I got a phone number starting with 0666 that called me and did a weird squishy sound and hang up.

Thank you for chatting to me @satibel
Maybe they sat on some fruit? And felt embarrased

@DavidPostill, spotted your earlier tips on understanding women. You should spin off a new SE site devoted to understanding women.
On second thought, nah. SE sites are supposed to be fact based, and that would end up pure opinion. Nobody understands women, even women.

Interestingly, there was a Relationships and Dating private beta site that failed a few years ago

@fixer1234 lol. That should be "Understanding Women Tip #4" :)

There is a Relationships Area 51 proposal at the moment
Also, ouch @Rahul2001 :(

@BenN Yeah :/
@DavidPostill start a twitter account to share your wisdom!
@DavidExplainsWomen or @UncleDatingTips

8:15 PM
@BenN, looks like an uphill battle for that site. In 6 mos they have 21 questions, 6 of which have 0 to -1 votes, and 3 are closed.

Yeah, it's not looking good

8:27 PM
It'll be somewhat like The Workplace, but questions will be way less generic and everyone will have a unique case... I don't think it's a good fit for SE.

I've got a Linux distro question. Every once in a while, I explore distros, looking for a good Windows replacement for people who want an easy transition to something very GUI based. The current OpenSUSE seems pretty impressive. Very stable, nicely polished, lots of great documentation, a nice repository, YaST is great, solid long-term infrastructure, etc.
But for some reason, it's treated like an afterthought and never seems to rival popular distros like Ubuntu or Mint. Anybody have any insight as to why?

@fixer1234 As someone who entrusts servers to openSUSE, I kinda think it's a lack of publicity that's hurting it.
openSUSE is very easy to administer and maintain. YaST is second to none, and it's rock-solid stable.

@bwDraco, it seems to be one of the best kept secrets.

However, it seems to be heavier on machine resources than most distros, needing at least 1 GB of RAM to run smoothly (most other distros can get by with 512 MB). The base openSUSE install is also quite large.
I had a Linux distro sampler DVD that came with a book I got several years ago and openSUSE had a polished and beautiful feel like nothing else on the disc.
There's this sense of "German engineering" in the desktop and administrative tools that no other distribution seems to be able to replicate.

@bwDraco, that was my reaction, also.
I wonder if part of the issue is that it has commercial backing, which sort of violates the "purity" concept.

8:41 PM
I'd say Ubuntu and Fedora are just as heavily commercialized.
SUSE, despite having changed hands several times (Novell, Attachmate, Micro Focus, and soon Hewlett Packard Enterprise), has consistently operated as its own business unit.

HP is going to take it over?

HPE.
Two different companies.
HP and HPE are independent.
There are no indications that SUSE is changing course in any significant manner, though.
HPE to buy a majority stake in Micro Focus, but SUSE itself isn't changing hands.

Interesting. Maybe the lack of popularity is related to the target audience. Red Hat is targeted at the IT audience, and few people want to use CentOS at home. SUSE has similarly been targeted at IT. Ubuntu and Mint have always been primary the individual user market.

Transferring the heads? Are you doing this in a clean room? — DavidPostill ♦ 31 secs ago

9:52 PM
@DavidPostill He probably saw that Louis Rossman video where they transfer the heads in the workshop...

10:41 PM
@Bob Ha! Thanks for having that peak at the files. :P

@fixer1234 I think the problem for SuSE is that it's just enough non-standard to mess with people.YaST is great, but the majority of the help available online is based on apt and translating to zipper isn't always easy. And they don't always follow the same config file locations.

hmmm...
that site on the dodgy with the SSL cert issues is still throwing up issues

Hi!

mornin'!

@MichaelFrank it is :p

I love how he's in two minds about the machine. He marvels at the build quality, but also completely ridicules how stupid the whole thing is.

11:29 PM
Turns out I could remove Windows Media Player from Windows 10. I have no use for a legacy media player app.
(Windows 10 version 1703: Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Manage optional features > Windows Media Player)
Removing WMP saves way more than the ~60 MB it says it takes up, more like 200 MB.
Just part of the ongoing efforts to trim the fat around Windows 10 on the storage-constrained Bifrons.
(more free space = less write amplification = increased NAND endurance; more free space, coupled with frequent TRIM commands, help ensure that the SSD does not internally run out of free space, which reduces performance and increases write amplification)

@bwDraco I wouldn't be surprised, if removing it will cause the bluetooth adapter to stop working .. or something similar

Windows 10 v1703 quite literally has no dependencies on legacy Windows Media Player.

are .. you ... completely certain ?

You can probably remove Candy Crush.... But don't be suprised if it turns back up again.

11:45 PM
naah, that I purged from command line

I literally watched it go from "Uninstalling/Removing (or whatever it says) to "Downloading" once...

.. now, if only I could stop windows from restarting on it's own, when it gets new update, that would be nice ... and for that setting to actually stick for more than 2 months

Lol
I wonder if the notepad trick will work

I just wish I could set active hours longer than 12 or whatever the max is.
I'm happy for it to restart to install updates, but can you do it between 12am and 6am???

active hours: all the fucking time

11:48 PM
@MichaelFrank 12 hours on Home, 18 hours on Pro (as of version 1703).

am I only one who finds that idiotic?

@tereško The auto-restart?

@bwDraco I suspect if it gets completely destroyed some third-party apps that embed media might crash

@BenN You can override the restart time in the Settings app, delaying it for up to a week (at least on my main laptop, which runs Windows 10 Pro; not sure how long for Windows 10 Home). This feature has existed since 1607 if I recall correctly.

@MichaelFrank Oh man, Candy Crush once broke my Windows deployment by somehow not being provisioned quite right (even though I literally never touched AppX stuff) and thereby making Sysprep fail

11:50 PM
@BenN my brain read it as ActiveX
fuck, I'm getting old

@tereško The only way I've found is to make it not install updates without approval, then since no installations are pending, it won't need a reboot when I'm doing something important

hmm ... lemme check

That's what I do on this machine (Pro) and it's been working great on all builds
It'll probably work on Home as well I suspect

Bob
@BenN @bwDraco IIRC removing WMP does remove some codec support. Not sure how true that is of recent Win10.
I think it broke hardware-accelerated H.264 playback in Firefox.
@BenN Nup, you can't require approval on Home. Unless you do some funny WSUS thing, I suppose.
Actually. I have a conveniently-available Win10 machine I can break. One sec.
Well, assuming it didn't get crypto'd over the weekend.

@Bob I see you had fun with that malware email...

11:55 PM

I haven't personally tested that particular one but a lot of policies do work fine on Home

Dunno if it actually worked, since manually running the XOR'd exe didn't work.
@BenN It's explicitly ignored on Home.
