Nowadays I can believe people either getting rid of computers or, more precisely, not even buying them.
It's all smartphones nowadays. People don't build computers, don't even buy them. And I feel old. .____.
@satibel Pffft. My first "desktop" was this:
That 64 Kb stick is how much RAM it had.
It had no monitor, you plugged it on your TV.
To save and read files, you used a tape recorder:

@ThatRussianGuy My first computer had 1k of ram

my desktop.

@DavidPostill I have a real perforated card somewhere.

The ZX81 is a home computer produced by Sinclair Research and manufactured in Scotland by Timex Corporation. It was launched in the United Kingdom in March 1981 as the successor to Sinclair's ZX80 and was designed to be a low-cost introduction to home computing for the general public. It was hugely successful, and more than 1.5 million units were sold before it was discontinued. The ZX81 found commercial success in many other countries, notably the United States, where it was initially sold as the ZX-81. Timex manufactured and distributed it under licence and enjoyed a substantial but brief boom...

1:05 PM
notice the shoeboxes propping up the screens.

@DavidPostill ONE KB? WOW!
Our credit cards probably have more RAM than it.
Heh. Credit cards have RAM. SIM cards have RAM.
Everything is a computer.
I was thinking that other day... Those questionnaires which include questions to gauge your income / purchasing power / social class or whatever
If I ever was honest with them...
"How many refrigerators you own?" - one
"How many refrigerators TVs own?" - one
"How many refrigerators you own?" - one
"How many refrigerators cars own?" - none
"How many bathrooms on your house?" - one
"How many computers on your house?" - well... let me check... my desktop, my grandmother's desktop, my neighbors' desktop, my old laptop, my dad's old laptop, my current laptop, my wife's laptop, my fileserver / firewall box, one raspberry pi, one pi zero...

@ThatRussianGuy Technically, water heaters, refrigerators, TVs, cars all have computers in them

If you define a computer as "a device with a TCP/IP stack" then there's also two current Android phones, three old Android phones, one tablet, one kindle, two game consoles
Oh, and five modem/routers
"How many computers on your house?" "That would be 24 computers your excellence"
(23 because I don't actually own a desktop PC, the rest is true)
@Rahul2001 I remember reading about microwave shortages because everyone manufacturing line was building tamagochis back then
But it was back in '98 and you were not even born and have no idea of what a tamagochi is.

1:22 PM
A computer is a device that accepts information (in the form of digitalized data) and manipulates it for some result based on a program or sequence of instructions on how the data is to be processed.
@ThatRussianGuy I was and I do

@satibel Well, having to build one from garbage because your parents didn't have the money for it and didn't see the point seemed pretty unique to me at the time ;D

@satibel HEY LOOK A COMPUTER

I didn't have internet back then, so most things felt a lot more unique than they do today ;P

I have probably 100 computers if we count the avr µc

@satibel HEY LOOK ANOTHER COMPUTER!
> manipulates it for some result based on a program or sequence of instructions
@OliverSalzburg I know how you feel. My first computer my mother saved for an entire year to buy me, we lived in a really poor neighborhood back then.

1:26 PM
technically yes.

@ThatRussianGuy I guess, around here stories like that are bound to be more common, now that I think about it

And I remember how it felt to build my first computers, I remember the immense excitement in connecting a Pentium 100 to a tube TV with a Trident 4MB RAM card with TV out and seeing Win95 boot up in a TV

I had to take a bus to the neighbooring city to buy it from a guy (the video card)
I was so excited to see it work I exclaimed "IT LIVES!"
Kids and their apps today don't know the feeling...

1:29 PM
@ThatRussianGuy how about a instance of dwarf fortress?

I don't even know how that feels anymore. Whenever I play with hardware these days, things usually break

i'm sure you could implement the tcp stack if you really wanted to xD
@ThatRussianGuy I remember my mate getting a VooDoo 3D card from game, and us taking it home so excited

@djsmiley2k Gooby pls
> Minecraft: Working Cell Phone w/ Web Browser and Video Calling
Working Cell Phone.... Web Browser and Video Calling... IN MINECRAFT 0.o
I was looking for other video where someone built a calculator, and just found this.

this is using a mod though.

Meh. Prebuilt items, you just pick a cellphone and PLANT A CELL TOWER.
I bet @cat is having seizures in their tomb and they're not even dead (I hope).
This guy built it by hand:

1:40 PM
@ThatRussianGuy 2 to 3 paychecks down and I may do a new build

@JourneymanGeek Oh, I read that you got those work issues mostly sorted out, glad to know

@ThatRussianGuy er no
its getting more and more surreal
but at least its a job ;p

And I wish I had just a tiny small trace of something resembling money management abilities, so I could save money and buy computer parts.
@JourneymanGeek Uh.... Okay.

@ThatRussianGuy I live with my parents
Also I walk home from work every day

Yeah, I have neither of those luxuries. =/

1:48 PM
tho I build my current PC when I was literally getting paid 300sgd a month
buuut parts are cheaper here?

@JourneymanGeek There's a conversation we had a few years back where you listed your then-current parts and prices, it was 700 USD for you and 9000 USD (or 9000 BRL ~= USD 3000, can't remember) for me, for the very same parts

ya
Also, I'm not sure what I need to upgrade
my system runs well enough

At this point I just wish I had a better work computer, and at home more storage.
A 3TB HDD costs about half a monthly minimum wage =/
Oh and faster internet, but it's never EVER going to happen.
I had to wait six years to get 5MBps, when the ISP's theoritical minimum was 15 MBps
But I suspect I am in some sort of blacklist of theirs, because I tried for 6 years and my wife's first try she got it.
(I worked for them for 3 months many years ago and it was... boy it sure was a hell of a ride. Worth some TFTS-worthy stories)

lol
I dooooo need more storage
but what I really want is $$$$$
4 bay nas with a bunch of storage, or a HP microserver with ditto
Nothing fully DIY in that form factor

1:56 PM
lol
in cost ;p

FIGARO FIGARO FIGARO FIGARO FIGARO FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGARO

If it makes you feel any better, I can't justify it either ;p

2:12 PM
3 messages moved to trash

Bob
I just had the weirdest moment
"oh shit I have another tablet"
completely forgot about that one

@djsmiley2k 360 degrees will give you the same result — GAD3R 1 min ago
erm, ok?

What? No MP4 oneboxing? :(
BUT THIS IS GLORIOUS TOVARISCH WOODPECKER

3:25 PM
roar
Just mapped my user folder on the main laptop as a network drive on the other system, and vice versa.
SMB shares make transferring files between computers so much easier.

WannaCrypt developers agree!

can confirm

The big thing is, "is your local network secure"?
Also, "have you educated your users?"

3:44 PM
@Burgi you have msdn?

4:21 PM
@Rahul2001 hi-tech pringles
@Avery no?

ah

why?

msdn gives 300$ cred every month

$50

4:26 PM
Sweet. Windows now directly reminds you when the password for a linked Microsoft account expires soon. So you go to the stupid website to change your password, after which you're required to log on again. And what's the first thing you get after the login? "WARNING! Your password will expire soon!"
Ugh
I wish I could get away with shitty UX like that
And, then that stupid Microsoft TFA app which never responds to push notifications O___o
RAGE!

can't double onebox

oh

its $25/mth
just for having a microsoft account associated with VS2017

@Bob O____O CONTAINER TABS <3 <3 <3 <3
I'm now back on Firefox full-time

yay
firefox is great

@allquixotic I could've sworn I mentioned those in chat at some point o.O

@Bob you did, but I was like #yeahok

my next quest is to get a live GPU load breakdown by GPU (Skylake GT2 IGP vs. Radeon Pro 460) on my Mac to determine whether my browser is rendering with GT2 or the 460

Bob
4:49 PM
@allquixotic I was actually drifting a bit towards Chrome. Until they broke devtools in 58. And gave me the worst "open-source" bug reporting experience of my life.

and then to try and switch it to the opposite of what it's using, because it has a tendency to lag, on both FF and Chrome, but only with the 15" MBP with graphics switching
the 13" with Skylake Iris (GT3e) was actually amazing for web browsing
super silky buttery smooth
@Bob and the whole "lol nobody needs to know about that" fiasco with SSL certs
also their hard-coded "CRL" instead of actually checking CRLs/OCSP

Bob
@allquixotic Did you hear about their intervention?

@Bob no?

Bob
I cbf digging up the crbug and the wicg issue, ut bascailly no one except that one lead qa/whatever guy wants this
Beacuse it broke dozens of apps and frameworks with little warning
> Thanks for fixing the problem I didn't know I have and making me do all that work to fix something I didn't have to.
> So rather than have the sites fix their crap (why do I expect most of this to be advertising btw), you're breaking a huge number of web apps that want cross browser behaviour to be identical, way to go IEv2, I mean Chromium... If I get the time I'll write an extension that undoes this bug at the weekend.

About the only positive here is the extra work you're providing me with, having to add the same fix to all the standards compliant pages I've put together that will be hit by this, probably close to ten thousand in the education sector alone...
etc etc
basically they took the nuclear option (the "interventions" that are supposed to be reserved for web-breaking issues) for a minor performance improvement
@allquixotic chrome://gpu (Chrome) and about:support (Firefox) should give you more info on the GPU in use

@Bob in FF? O_O

Bob
4:55 PM
@allquixotic Graphics section under about:support

WebGL2 Renderer ATI Technologies Inc. -- AMD Radeon Pro 460 OpenGL Engine

Bob
@allquixotic Though, I'll say e10s isn't really 'complete' properly until ~55. That's when e10s-a11y will be out. I think e10s-multi was planned for 54/55
@allquixotic there's a way to force GPU I think... maybe
wait, macOS?
idk.

> If you want to use the higher-performance discrete graphics processor at all times, choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Energy Saver. Then deselect the automatic graphics switching checkbox.

Bob
Anyway. My current reason to hate Chrome: devtools broken, they took my (conveniently restricted) bug report and closed it as a duplicate of another conveniently-restricted one so I can't see its current status, and effectively ignored my test case/STR. And ignored my followup asking them to unrestrict mine. Or tell me how I can check the other one. Wait, they just ignored everything.

OK, so turn it on when I'm on battery power :P

Bob
5:01 PM
They haven't replied in almost two weeks now.

oh thank god: gfx.io

Bob
By comparison, the Firefox bug reports might get you silence, but you won't have it mysteriously closed pointing off to nowhere unless it's a critical security issue. And even then at least someone will say so.

so yeah, Skylake GT2 pretty much sucks

Bob
@allquixotic :(
I've not noticed any issues with iGPUs for web browsing...

@Bob lol. the Radeon might not be much better if the drivers are equally bad
although Intel's drivers seem to actually be quite good on MacOS on GT3e

Bob
5:05 PM
@allquixotic Intel's drivers are quite good everywhere, no?
IIRC it was one of the safer options for Linux

when I load that up it switches to AMD
and FF scrolls smoother
even when I switch to another tab it stays on AMD :P
closed tab, switched back to Intel
but I can force it to run on AMD full time with a menu item selection in gfxCardStatus :D
it's definitely the faster card -- by about 4x (3x faster than GT3e, 4x faster than GT2)
gfxCardStatus will come in handy if I need to be on battery power, too - I'll just force it to remain on the iGPU 100% of the time
wish I could just hard-code that logic "if on A/C, use AMD 100% of the time, else use Intel 100% of the time"

Bob
@allquixotic lol. as bad as it is having to use driver-specific control panels on Windows, they do usually give you that option
I've still not really decided if I hate AMD's or Nvidia's switchable graphics control panel more
but yea there's usually that toggle. "on battery, use A, B, or app-defined" "when plugged in, ..."

I think it might be the switching itself that causes lag... and apparently video can do it too
it's just a little "hitch" that lasts about 250 ms
just enough to be annoying

Bob
@allquixotic yea, I've had that before
ended up pinning it to iGPU-only
didn't really need the dGPU for anything anyway
I think I did explicit switches to dGPU just for Skyrim :P

5:42 PM
@Bob Huh. At first I thought that staying on the dGPU would make the whole chassis sweltering hot (like it is when I game), but just web browsing on the AMD GPU seems to be pretty efficient -- it's probably only a few watts more power draw than the iGPU
enough to matter if you need your battery to last as long as possible, but if you're only using it for 1-2 hours it's fine
I just didn't want the internals to be sweltering at extremely hot temperatures 24/7, but they're not

CAN U NOT DO IT VIA POWER OPTIONs :/

1 hour later…

my friend is thinking to inject wannaCry ransomware in his college PCs..he is confident that ransomware will work as the management uses pirated windows 7 in all of their PCs including PCs of accounts department..when he shared his plan how will he do it, the plan was looking very appealing

@defalt That's a good way to get expelled.

but he doesn't want students get affected with this..is it possible?

the server fault room is dead :'(

Q: How does local drive processing vs mapped drive processing get balanced on servers?

a coderIs a mapped drive, or local processing taking priority for what will be written to the drive? The only reason why I wonder this is because I have a server "slowing the progress of", and writing under 2 MBPS and another server getting up to about 100MBPS then dipping to about 6 MBPS with azure, w...

@acoder Yes. You killed it.

@allquixotic lol

7:01 PM
@allquixotic he said he can't be traced back as he will use tor mail service to send the phishing mail

@defalt No one here is going to help you perform an illegal hack against a university. If you're going to discuss criminal activity, do it elsewhere.

should i stop him?

Um... Obviously!!
Seriously, grow up and stop wasting peoples' time with this script kiddie shit.

he did scare me when he shared his plan because he was not laughing

if you want to do a real script kitty thing at college ping of death the gateway
i remember it took 8 computers in college
back in 2002

7:05 PM
@acoder hehehe..once our teacher told us this ping technique

DDOS is fun to see the network admin freak out
@defalt yep

Q: What priority should AZ_Copy and processes run at for priority over other things going on on the server?

a coderWe're running a server at >90% most of the time (500+ processes all day every day), and I'm getting A LOT of errors when trying to backup some data from azure. How can I set my process for running in priority to avoid download (timeout) errors? What processes should run higher than other proces...

7:27 PM
@allquixotic my friend was lying :) phew

Well that's good to hear.

7:43 PM
@GypsySpellweaver Any more recommendations for the chatroom?

7:56 PM
my mouse pointer just dissapeared!
i have no mouse

@Nick cool

@Nick Follow the trail of cheese ;p

I'm suprised I'm doing so well without it
I've opened up mouse properties from the control panel but now, I can't reach it.
Win+1+3 isn't giving me Win+13, it's just giving me Win+1
I'm not good with these keyboard shortcuts
Ok, got it with Win+Tab
It's almost impossible to upload screenshots here with just the keyboard.

8:15 PM
@Rahul2001 markdowns would be nice, so would @ mentions. In WiFi mobile so may not see messages til I get home.

Yup, got my pointer back.
A lot of playing around with tab and Shift+Tab but I finally got it.
Also, in this chat's upload>browse doesn't bring up file explorer just by pressing enter. Also, it takes like a gajillion tabs to reach the browse button. I have to first cycle through every link/button in this room. Please try it out and see what I mean.

8:30 PM
@GypsySpellweaver Hm, could possibly make up some jQuery which plays an audio file if it sees the username in a message
And markdown is easy, I'll add it tomorrow
G'night folks :)

8:41 PM
G'night,, awesome kid.

9:05 PM
Can someone please explain to me how 5MB of bandwith affects a download more than the 5MB that is being used to run the download?

@acoder what?

my coworker convinced my bos that one affects the other greatly
and we're all techies
are they messing with me?

I have absolutely no idea what you actually mean by " the 5MB that is being used to run the download"
Are you downloading 5MBytes, or do you have 5Mbits of bandwidth or what?

if you're running a few downloads and 1 is only getting about 5MB on the system, and the other is getting over 100MB on the same system from azure would there be a greater affect than aprox the 5 MB?
both are on azure at the same account

Also, are you talking about megabits or mega bytes, cause generally network bandwidth is measures in megabits (Mb) rather than megabytes (MB)

9:13 PM
azure CLI

A greater affect than what?

the download rate

if one is downloading at 5MB and the other is over 100 then one is downloading at 5MB and the other is over 100
You need to be clearer about what you are asking.

they're saying that there's a larger affect downloading than what i'm able to run at

That still makes no sense.

9:16 PM
exactly

No, @acoder, what you are saying makes no sense.

we're a global GIS company

No, what you are trying to explain doesn't make sense. What do you mean by 'affect'?

there's a greater than 5 MB bandwith loss when I'm only able to get the 5MB

There's overheads in downloading 5Mbits, sure.
Not 100Mbits of overhead though

9:19 PM
i'm writing to USB he's writing to a storage array

Okay, so I think you are saying that there is one 100Mbit download going currently. Then when you start a 5Mbit download, the 100Mbit downloaded is impacted by more than 5Mbit?

sorry, boss wanted to talk to me
@MichaelFrank yes
@MichaelFrank I'm out for the week

10:04 PM
Ugh... what is it about corporate intranet sites that make them such huge piles of crap?

10:38 PM
@MichaelFrank Zero competition? Built in-house by people who lost touch with best up-to-date practices? Decisions made by comitees on non-IT and non-design managers? No budget? "You're just IT and I own you so shut up and do what I told you to"? All of the above?

@ThatRussianGuy Bingo!
