@Bob No worries. I'm trying with firewall rules that you have suggested. When you are back, it would be of great help if you could assist me with this. Can I not achieve this with a firewall rule to allow all IPs from my Google Wi-Fi subnet?

Bob
@hypersonics Not unless you have that static route, because otherwise the Google router would simply send (route) this unknown subnet to nowhere.
@hypersonics Looks like it's not supported: snbforums.com/threads/google-wifi-and-static-routes.36924
Failing that, if you don't want to rearrange the network you can access the ER-X's WAN IP, which should be an address within the Google subnet. But you'd only have the one address across all laptops and you'd need to port forward to the correct internal address.
Making the ER-X primary is probably cleanest
@hypersonics The firewall rules I suggested were to further isolate the two. Since you actually want them to communicate, you don't want those rules.

3:44 AM
(also, once you guys are done... SU question? ;p)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek this was spawned from one :P

ahh lol

Bob
caught my eye cause I set up an ER-X like three weeks ago in a similar config

ah
(i've been out of the loop lol)

Bob
But needed to clarify a fair bit, which was flooding comments

3:49 AM
Sore eyes again

Bob
@JourneymanGeek tbh maybe should've created a separate room but... eh, it's quiet in here and maybe others can chime in :P

oh tis fine ;p

4:06 AM
@Bob maybe some kind of "super" SBC with low latency and high bitrate is what I'm using? :S
even with the Priva III, since apparently semi-clueful guy on reddit thinks I'm not using aptX on the Beats

Did some experimentation with OBS: On CPU-heavy games like Assassin's Creed Origins, there is not enough CPU power for x264 encoding at a preset slower than "veryfast". If recording to disk, using the CRF rate control mode will produce better results than CBR (and has less impact on game framerate as well), but it does tend to produce large spikes in bitrate.
Not planning to live-stream anything - if I'm posting gameplay videos, it'll be recorded to disk first.
Not too sure if @slhck is around...
Tuning for "film" seems to help.

Bob
8:46 AM
@hypersonics Ok, to make the ER-X primary, what you want to do is run the wizard again. That's the WAN+2LAN2 wizard, or Basic Setup if you've updated the firmware (it's an alias to the same wizard):
If you untick Only use one LAN, it'll configure two subnets for you: one on eth1, and one on switch0 (a hardware-offloaded switch connecting eth2 through eth4 together).
(You can later break those other ports off switch0 and add more subnets, do fancy VLAN configs, etc.)
Since you have the ADSL modem in bridge mode, you just need to plug it into eth0 and enter your PPPoE connection details on the ER-X.

and... eye's mostly back to normal ._.

Bob
@hypersonics From here, you have two options. If you keep the Google Wi-Fi device in routing mode, you'll have a second level of NAT for the Google Wi-Fi devices (basically the inverse of your current situation). This means you can access your ER-X second subnet devices from the Google Wi-Fi subnet, but not the other way around.
If, on the other hand, you put the Google Wi-Fi device into bridged mode, this means it acts simply as a dumb Wi-Fi access point with no routing capabilities. This means the subnet is entirely managed by the ER-X, eliminates the second level of NAT, and all devices on either subnet can communicate with each other (routed by the ER-X) unless you add additional firewall rules.
Of course, Google does not recommend the bridged mode approach, and they list the features of the Google AP that you cannot use in this mode: support.google.com/wifi/answer/6240987?hl=en-AU
back in a bit

Bob
9:17 AM
@hypersonics Personally, I would do the Google bridged approach, since multiple levels of NAT tends to make networks difficult to manage (I would know... ran three layers of NAT for about 5 years before fixing it). But if you still want the additional Google routing features, you could just put it in routing mode, with the caveat that you cannot directly initiate connections from the ER-X eth1 subnet to the Google Wi-Fi devices unless you forward ports for each application.
(I used the UniFi APs rather than Google - the UniFi APs were strictly APs only, and did not have a routing mode at all.)
@hypersonics Lemme know if any of that doesn't make sense and I'll try to explain it further. I'm not sure how much you know of networking concepts, so I'm kinda assuming you mostly know how routing works and just need to know how to configure the devices.

A: Setting up two routers in home networking

Bob My initial goal was to have a separate subnet for the three laptops, which is what I have got now. However, my intention is to communicate (mainly via SSH) from a Linux client that is connected to Google Wi-Fi with the Linux laptop 1 that is connected to ER-X. So, basically across IPs existing...

TeamViewer?

insecure.

user226528
Color me intrigued.

I want to use an open standard with my pc, and one that might be backdoored (like teamviewer) is not something I'm going to use for unattended access.
I do have it installed but I have the service disabeld.

12:12 PM
modern NX isn't really open

user226528
What makes you think TeamViewer is backdoored?

unless you're using something that supports... er... NX3 I think?

user226528
And I used to use it. Am I in danger?

Ave
@FleetCommand it had been exploited before.

user226528
If by "Before" you mean in 2008, I am aware of that. Otherwise...

user226528
12:15 PM
But that's a decade ago and, which piece of software hasn't been exploited once or twice?

Ave
I am p sure it got exploited a couple years ago

user226528
I see. If you remembered anything more tangible, please don't hesitate to ping me. I take the security very seriously. But of course, I'll get to the bottom of this.

and what, x2go?

ahh ya
I've not had much luck with the open source varients :(

I might consdier the nomachine nx server.
It's proprietary too, but at least it supports proper authentication.

i guess for visiting today.
i had a weird stomach bug, which caused me to produce immence amounts of acid
this is when i'm already on acid reducing medication
fortunately i have what seems to be a extremely high metabolism, and ejected it rather quickly
Also, what slave thing?

user226528
@DavidPostill There was no mention of them dying. If they were dead, the report would have been "mysterious explosion, 3 dead." Somehow that piece of news didn't cause certain images to assail my mind, but your message did. I always imagined three criminal covered in soot!

i have no idea what it is

At least one person died.

@DavidPostill "Suicide belt?" and "her"? This seems to be a different piece of news.

@djsmiley2k App for sending IM over a LAN. Small, free and very effective for home.

user226528
But now my operation has expanded to 30 computers.

@FleetCommand Really?

user226528
Peer-to-peer IM doesn't cut it.

user226528
@DavidPostill If I may ask, where have you read this quoted sentence?

user226528
@DavidPostill Hmm... Quite a different story. It is from 2011; almost seven years old. Mention of Russia is totally new. Also, this the first time I hear "Islamist terrorists" having any bone to pick with Russia.

user226528
...

user226528
Anyway, I am looking for software solution for intra-LAN messaging and person-to-person file sharing. Something that relies on a central server and supports offline messaging.

@FleetCommand So where's the link to your story?

@FleetCommand i would say lync but it doesn't do offline

1:21 PM
@FleetCommand I've been messing with synapse, but not really tried file sharing

user226528
@DavidPostill Someone told me about it in the Wikipedia IIRC channel. I didn't keep the link. (Just FYI, I don't plan to memorize yours either.) Seriously, you don't find it funny but saw fit to research it? I must be missing something. Did I traumatize you?

user226528
@djsmiley2k Also, it is discontinued.

@djsmiley2k sharpen the edges?

The Ring is a series of novels written by Koji Suzuki, released in the 1990s. Initially, the series was a trilogy composed of: Ring, Spiral, and Loop. A short story collection called Birthday was released shortly after, introducing extra stories interconnecting the trilogy. Two further books, S and Tide, were published in 2012 and 2013 respectively. The books revolve around a fictional cursed videotape that kills whoever watches it seven days later, created by the ghost of Sadako Yamamura, a psychic character thrown down a water well to her death. Each book explores the misfortunes of its p...

@JourneymanGeek I've found three hit for "synapse": Apache Synapse, Peltarion Synapse and Synapse Audio Software, but they don't seem to be it.

It says "Welcome to Matrix"!
Brrrr...

can't remember if it sends files though
could also go with that old classic, jabber

@JourneymanGeek Looks like the opposite of what I want: Both de-centralized and Internet-based.

naw, you can run a server and connect through a client
but you can talk between servers too
shrug ;p
software recs!

1:35 PM
Synapse seems to require Cygwin.

user226528
I am a smart person, but I swear, I can't figure out what Cygwin, Mingw and Mingw64 are.

@FleetCommand You're not smart enough to google?

user226528
@DavidPostill You're not smart enough to assume I did?

synapse needs cygwin? I run it on linux bit I thought its all python

@FleetCommand Then you're not smart enough to understand the search results? What exactly is confusing you? Too much Christmas spirit?

1:39 PM
ah, I guess so
@FleetCommand yeah, a software recs question might be an idea ;p

user226528
@DavidPostill Actually, I am in too much Christmas spirit, so I can't continue the mean "you are not smart enough" game.

I kinda assume everyone has a spare box lying around ;p

user226528
I read all those things about, say, Mingw64, but when I go to get it and use it, I download something that, for all intents and purposes, looks like a pile of files.

@FleetCommand Well if you asked the right question we would not make smartness assumptions.

user226528
It is like telling you all those nice things about a Mercedes-Benz Maybach but when you go to get one, they give you a pile of goo!

user226528
1:43 PM
You can't help but ask yourself: How the hell is this any of what I just read?

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Thanks, pal. 😊 You've been most helpful today. I'm gonna try Synapse on some Docker container. If it was what I'm looking for, I'll try SoftwareRec.

I remember some years ago, I was in a new-year party with all of the extended family. (There is a lot of them believe me.) Some of the young ones were comparing their graphic cards. Back then, NVIDIA GeForce 300 series was very common.

user226528
So, they asked about mine and I said: GeForce 8800. At first the young ones thought I had bought some exotic high-end model, until I explained them that it was actually older than the 100 series.

user226528
Because they were still in disbelief (eye roll) I joked that in a couple of years, you'd be speaking to your friends and they tell you they have NVIDIA 10 series cards. 'Cause if the NVIDIA number has lost a digit, who knows, it might lose another.

user226528
Well, today I am the proud owner of a Series 10 card.

nice?
8800s had legs as a minimum spec card. the actual cards died youngish in my experience.

user226528
Oh, the funny thing is, I've been using this card even after I had purchased a 2nd-generation Core i5 CPU.

user226528
2:16 PM
Silly me, right?

naw
They were decent cards performance wise
just that quite a few cards in that series died randomly

user226528
2:42 PM
Well, the integrated Intel HD subsystem did a much better job.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek So, question: Is it possible to have a private conversation with a SE member? For example, is it possible that you and I conspire to assassinate David Postill without him knowing? ;)

user226528
If yes, how?

@FleetCommand nope
all chat on SE is not private, and I donno why I'd want to assassinate @DavidPostill. I'd have more flags to handle.
In fact other than mod messages, nearly everything is public by design

user226528
Oh, you definitely don't want to assassinate David. But it was the safest assassination joke I could write. I didn't want to risk SAS pouring down on us, take us to the tower and keep us there at her majesty's pleasure (although I am sure her majesty would neither know about it nor draw any particular pleasure from it.)

hi, is it possible to define a variable inside of an array in C

what about the problem that size is now undefined?

I know ints can be defined within loops

I don't know C tbh

Q: Why can't I create an array with size determined by a global variable?

Ashish YadavWhy does the array a not get initialized by global variable size? #include<stdio.h> int size = 5; int main() { int a[size] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}; printf("%d", a[0]); return 0; } The compilation error is shown as variable-sized object may not be initialized According to me, th...

not sure if related

Oh that is possible, Im just asking if you can use int keyword within the square brackets
my program works with int outside of the square brackets fine btw. just curious
I like to have as few lines and as short lines as possible

7:16 PM
that's a terrible way to code.
you'll end up with brainfuck code, without even using brainfuck.
Also why are you asking here, and not SE?
we aren't your personal Q&A

oh :/
are questions not allowed in here? I didnt know

they are, as long as they are useful or something. lol

ah.

but... my point is, if you're defining array[a] within the call to create the array....
a doesn't exist before hand, so has no value, so you can't create an array of 0 size
it'd be.... 'null'
You'd litterally be creating a null pointer, I think
also it'd take 5 seconds to manually test it, yourself

it failed when I tested it

7:19 PM
instead we've spent 7 minutes so far discussing it
and while I've re-covered some info about C arrays and such, I don't think it's helped you at all.

it has

So I'd suggest a question on SU saying 'I tried this, it fails, why?'

@CoderCat Yes you do. You were told a couple of days ago.
Dec 22 at 19:19, by DavidPostill
@CoderCat Why are you asking here? This is not your personal support channel. If you have a question, please ask it on the main site.
@CoderCat You should, of course, choose the correct main site for your questions ...

if I asked in the forum wouldn't it get deleted for not being a practical question
oh that was a question ^ nm

1. don't be stupid
2. no, it wouldn't because you'r trying to do something that's technically something you might do
it might get loads of down votesd because as far as I can tell you've not done any research on it

7:40 PM
I just didn't think it was that important as to research it and type a question on SE
Im not referring to a practical programming task, I was just messing around
I'm too new to fully understand scope yet (yes I jump too far ahead sometimes)

7:58 PM
ok
in this case I think you're jumpiing too far ahead

@Mokubai You can celebrate it on August 9th if you want :)

With numerous companies producing lollipops, the candy now comes in dozens of flavors and many different shapes. They range from small ones which can be bought by the hundred and are often given away for free...

SRU Justification Impact: Many users are reporting issues with bios corruption with 17.10. This seems to stem from enabling the intel-spi-* drivers in the kernel, which don't appear to be ready for use on end-user machines. Fix: Disable this driver. Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware. Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing anything which requires this driver. --- Hi all, Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users reported a corrupted BIOS. It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after rebooting, the system starts with the old settings. Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do not have a CDROM. Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue. Thank you!! #### UPDATE (22/12/2017) #### LENOVO machines affected so far (please add your affected model to

@djsmiley2k It's apparently a "Ubuntu included a module that for some reason allows the operating system to write to one of the serial EEPROM devices and Intel said it wasn't ready for prime-time" thing.
> A spokesperson for Intel has been in touch to say the chipmaker is aware of the BIOS cockup triggered by installing Ubuntu Linux 17.10. "We’re actively working with Ubuntu to ensure the issue is corrected," she said. "This is a unique issue based on non-Intel recommended changes made to the BIOS configurations by Ubuntu."
