HAVE YOU DUG DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE OF MUNDANITY TO SEEK THE LAGOMORPH OF AWESOMENESS?

damn robots.txt

12:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek Looks really interesting. I hope they get press attention in the very near future to put the system to the test.
Only catch would be that it's Linux only atm
And apache only, not nginx

@oldmud0: supports ngnix I think
not lighttpd support
which sucks
Supports multiple web servers:

    apache/2.x (tested and working on Ubuntu Linux)
    nginx/0.8.48+ (under development)
    standalone (runs its own simple webserver to prove you control a domain)

12:43 AM
no windows though :(

Its still new

Wanted to bring back an old question I asked a while back shortly after I upgraded to Windows 10:
Jul 30 at 0:46, by DragonLord
Your thoughts: Do the Windows 10 Task View and desktop compositing effects feel a bit like Compiz on Linux?
Jul 30 at 23:01, by DragonLord
The Windows 10 desktop has more eye candy than ever. The minimize, restore, and maximize animations are more sophisticated than before and the Task View animations feels like Compiz.

donno
I never used compiz ;p
On one hand.

arch-abitHardware vs. Software: Make SURE to keep hardware. OMG - Like I DID invent p.i.r.a.c.y. Pay you way, money is NOTHING!!!! Super, if you have a functional system do what it should -- money is NOTHING !!! Super,

Not an answer. On the other, well, Its probably going to get downvoted to oblivion.

looks around for a mod

@JourneymanGeek but how does he have 375 points o.O

@Leathe: his other answers arn't as strange

That's even more confusing
awww. you deleted it :(

5:01 AM
anyway, cleared things up
Yeah ;p
I would typically leave it for another mod, but this seems to be 'my' shift ;p
(since I answered)

His comment in Moses' answer is really confusing, too
I mean.. I get it.. but

Bob
creative cloud might just be the absolute buggiest piece of software I've ever used
It's crashed and restarted 3+ times (each time telling me the damn thing has been updated to the latest version in a balloon) while trying to update some of the subprograms

@Leathe: I don't ;p

@JourneymanGeek I'm assuming he's talking about Microsoft in the sense of mother earth
it doesn't ask for permission when it does something, it just does.

5:17 AM
Windows 7 licences don't expire.
support does

well then he's just an idiot

but I can still do a fresh install of..
erm
XP?

I don't even know

XP's the oldest OS to have activation

(it's not really fair to call him/her an idiot, but some of his/her stuff is reaaallly confusing/messed up)

5:21 AM
heh
Mod rule 0. Deal with the actions, not the people.
;p

@Bob yup, it's crap

(Occationally indulgent mod rule 0. Let the community deal with stuff sometimes ;p)

So, user rule 0. don't be a mod so you can deal with people (and stuff, sometimes)? :P

lol
SU has roughly enough mods that I can occationally go "the hell with it" and take a week or two off ;p
But yes, that is a great idea ;p

Bob
5:58 AM
This BS.
I've just about had enough of Google's absolutely braindead policies.

6:10 AM
that's.. literally upvoting yourself for attention

Bob
I just spent over an hour trying to figure out how to (a) change the name and (b) remove crap from the "feed".
I don't know how they could possibly have made this less usable.
"Channel tips: first impressions matter"
Well isn't this an absolutely terrible first impression by Google?
The "Unpublish from channel's feed" button literally does nothing.

6:51 AM
Oh look I got 100 gb of storage on Drive
Apparently it's bundled with my phone

7:03 AM
That's pretty common now
a year innit?

7:21 AM
2 years apparently
The space dissipates after 2 years ?

Bob
7:36 AM
shrug

@Bob: The thread makes my head hurt

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Which thread?

@Bob: the one you linked
maybe I'm spoiled but so many me toos

And I think the disks failed
Screw softlayer

Bob
7:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek Well, this is a thread asking Google to do something.
Not really expecting much in the way of an answer.
Google is probably the absolute worst company to actually deal with.
At least you can talk to someone with Microsoft (thousands of useless MVPs notwithstanding).
@OliverSalzburg's had experience with their business side of things too, and that didn't look good.

lol
ahh
yeah

Bob
I still have my 2-year 48 GB Dropbox bonus from my S4.
And 1 TB on OneDrive.
Now... if I could actually upload this much that'd be great.

Bob

Q: IBM Hard Drive inside of a Dell latitude D600

AntkrisI had my IBM ThinkPad fry out on me so doing research I had found a Dell latitude D600 Laptop for sale. @Clearquestionwithexamples "This account is temporarily suspended to cool down. The suspension period ends in 23 hours. "

yea
@DavidPostill It's funny but he wants to know why his computer is slow

@Clearquestionwithexamples That's @JourneymanGeek applying a rolled up newspaper ;)

>_>
@DavidPostill: actually, its a bit more like putting the puppy in a fenced off space, while we work out why he does toilet on the floor.
Right now, I'm working out the latter.
Anyway...

@Clearquestionwithexamples "he wants to know why his computer is slow" where did you see that?
@JourneymanGeek lol

He didn't explicitly say it but "Now the latitude is working with the ThinkPad hard drive but everything in my task manager says it's running and the whole system is very slow. "

9:52 AM
@Clearquestionwithexamples Ah. I thought you were talking about the user whose cooling off ;) Now I realise it was about the question I linked to.

lol I saw this on SR earlier and flagged it as reposting superuser.com/questions/991276/…
It was just deja vu

LOL
"Yes sophisticated data hacks happen, I know about them. But the bank and the country I live in don't have that much level of sophistication. My PC already has a bunch of viruses(the in-built incompetent Anti virus notifies me of them from time to time). "

I'm tempted to ask what bank.

Me too
"You really think the customer data can be hacked from a single computer or can be accessed by a run of a mill virus. "

@JourneymanGeek After a bit of google-fu I'm 99.99% sure it's an Indian bank.

@Clearquestionwithexamples: caching?

No, that's a different review

There's no way I see to undo a rejected suggested edit.

I was watching a video on hackaday...
and I saw this
@terdon ping
any luck with the windows 10 install?

@JourneymanGeek Haven't started yet. Damn, I am not looking forward to this, it will be a pain.

@terdon: download the media for windows 7 directly, install and activate, then hit it with the update tool.

Any nifty tools I can use to make my life easier? I mean, will it be possible to drop to Windows 7 without loosing settings at least?

I did that for a SERIOUSLY annoyingly malfed up install
in theory? Yes
In practice, backup first?

Yes, of course, but how does the theory go?

11:10 AM
I back up
and I haven't really done any downgrades

Damn, on Linux I'd just save the list of installed packages and leave my /home untouched. Sigh.

@JourneymanGeek What should I backup to get the settings?
Are they even compatible between 7 and 10?

your /user/username folder is essentially /home

OK, so I'll be able to copy whatever the equivalent of dotfiles are back?

11:12 AM
yeah
%appdata% is your 'own' config files for things
(I typically build 'disposable' installs so... I'm not too sure)

OK, and Windows actually keeps compatibility between releases?
Wow.

typically? kiiiinda

heh

practically? All this is per program

@JourneymanGeek Ideally, I'd like to keep things like mapped network drives since they were a bit of a pain to set up. Will that work?

11:15 AM
erm

Damn.

if you don't do a wipe?
Probably
I don't map drives tho

How can I not do a wipe?

when installing it'll ask
2 of my 7 -> installs upgrades

@JourneymanGeek Oh, you mean I install from within Windows 10, not by booting off the CD?

11:16 AM
oh to revert?
You can erm...
supposedly do something with your windows.old folder

Lol. Sounds like I'd better do a fresh install, really.

To me? Smart money's on 1) do a windows 7 install. 2) salt to taste customise to taste 3) Backup (using something like macrium reflect free if its a one off or veem for persistant backups) 4) install windows 10 as an upgrade
if it cheeses you off, backup windows 10 (or whatever you need from there, so %appdata) restore the last backup, move %appdata% back

Yeah, I think the clean install will probably be best. Oh man.
Why do you suggest customizing the 7 instead of doing it all on the 10?

If you're going back to 7, the backup will be mostly set up
If you're sure you're going to 10, the hell with it.

@JourneymanGeek I'm going to 64-bit 10, yes.

11:28 AM
Actually
I'm just about to upgrade a windows 7 VM ._.

Have fun :)

Its on KVM
APPARENTLY it'll fail unless the processor is set to be coreduo

Right, back in a bit, have to fix an arch install. At least, there, I sort of know what I'm doing :) Thanks for the help JMG.

feel free to ping me in the next 5 hours or so if you need help ;)

Bob
11:45 AM
@terdon There's two sets of settings.
The user-specific settings are in two places.
%AppData% (default %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming) is the recommended place to put settings-as-files.
%UserProfile%\ntuser.dat contains the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive of the registry.
Technically, MS recommends that applications all use their own file storage and not the registry, the registry being for OS settings and classes.
Of course, many don't listen.
Then there's the system settings.
You've got %ProgramData% as the preferred location.
%CommonProgramFiles% has a bit of a fun story involving unintended uses and backwards compat.
And the system-wide registry is stored in %SystemRoot%\System32\config.

Oh, we ordered 16 gb of ram, guess how much was provisioned ? ;p

Bob
hm
I know there's tier 1 and tier 3 support.
But I've never heard anyone mention tier 2, for some reason.

12:04 PM
@Bob I used to be T2 support. T1 was front line call centre and dealt with non technical issues (billing, etc) and trivial technical. Non-trivial technical passed to T2 (me). Anything I couldn't fix escalated to T3. T3 was networking. It all depends on how customer support is structured.

Bob
@DavidPostill Hm. Normally I (as a customer/user) reach an automated system first that'll handle routing to sales/billing/tech. Or they might even have different numbers.
So maybe I've been calling "tier 2" all this time, or maybe they just don't bother with the whole human-call-passing thing anymore and billing is just in an entirely different department in bigger companies.

@Bob Like I said "It all depends on how customer support is structured."
In my case there was also a front end automated system. Lusers would always press the wrong buttons ... I would get billing and front line would get tech calls that should have gone straight to me ...
It probably also depends on the country. In the UK tech support jobs are often advertised as level 1, 2 or 3. You still have to closely read the ads to see what they really mean (especially if the ads are placed by agencies) :/

12:19 PM
@HackToHell: 4?

@JourneymanGeek 64 \m/

ahh
until they notice ;p

Softlayer sucks, first they don't attach a SSD, then the HDD fails. The OS reinstall takes half a day. Guess what, two copies of ubuntu. Then I check to see if everything else ordered is there and look ma, much RAM
@JourneymanGeek I am going to open an ticket

12:48 PM
Okay apparently they did due to their policy on ram interleaving for the specific motherboard.

Q: Changing protocol handler in google chrome, opening a Telegram link

DummyBeginnerI installed Telegram Desktop for Linux 64-bit. This is a SU chat room. Ubuntu is over there ---> chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/201/ask-ubuntu-general-room ;)

Yes, Thanks. But I tought since it's a Chrome stuff. It would be applicable here too.
Also Here's where many super users are gathered. So there's a chance some of them would be SUPER in Ubuntu too :D

1:40 PM
@HackToHell sorry you got a terribad who set you up. My friend actually built their website many years back and it's still being used today. heh

@DummyBeginner: typically we're a general chat room. We don't really appreciate people popping and going LOOK AT MY QUESTION as much as we might...
If you're a regular, maybe. If its a horribad question... sometimes yes. Alas, since I'm a mod now, I can't go "brb downvoting any more"
also, I don't have an ubuntu/gui box anymore but...

Q: How to set which application is launched by xdg-open?

DimaI have run update-alternatives as well as gnome preffered apps selection thing. And all point to have chromium browser as default. Yet when I run xdg-open http://askubuntu.com firefox is launched! Similarly emacs and bzr also launch stuff in firefox instead of chromium. Are there any additional ...

The answer seems to be you change it in gconf editor.

@JourneymanGeek theres no place like cd ~/
:)

@Dave: lol
for some reason the download for my windows 7 -> 10 vm upgrade is slow :(
I'll likely end up leaving it overnight and hoping it dosen't fail

ive been trying to upgrade my intel atom media center with 10x all weekend.. and its slow too.
:\

lol
If I can find a spare windows 7/8 licence (I THINK I have one), I might throw it on my old old atom box

1:56 PM
Keeps getting stuck on 'Doing a quick check before you can schedule your upgrade...' screen

seemingly though the bottleneck for older systems is ram
ahh
updating off USB is quicker for me
but I kinda didn't bother with it on a VM I access remotely

Well its available to download via windows update, but im scared if i install it that way, i wont be able to avoid the express settings
Havent researched that :)

The 4th largest UK ISP has been hacked.
TalkTalk 'knew of hacking risk A YEAR ago': Company could 'go out of business' and lose £75million after millions of customers' bank details were stolen in cyber attack
It was reported this morning that lawyers are preparing claims on behalf of thousands of customers, with each in line for a possible £1,000 payout.

@Dave: I typically use the media creation too and make a usb for updating
works great, and is fast

2:00 PM
Funny, now that i mentioned it being stuck. It finally got past that one screen. If it doesnt get anywhere, ill have to do it the USB way

Cyber-hacking victims' fury as they are charged £245 to leave TalkTalk and calls grow for boss to step down

Bob
That seems like an oddly specific question :P
@DavidPostill Yay dailymail!

@Bob More than twice the limit? Should be loss of licence and jail time ;)

> If you are going to try it out, surely you can get faster than 140. 160 is a good target, 100mile/her.
lol

Apparently it was an SQL injection ...

2:06 PM
my type of an attack vector being a dba and all

I hope the developers didn't copy some of the vulnerable code from SO ;)

@DavidPostill Nice. You could make a decent living being a hack victim in the UK. In the US, when our details get stolen, all we get is a year of free identity theft monitoring service from one of the credit agencies (Experian, etc.).
Just register an account on every business's website (most accounts are free even if you aren't buying anything from them), then sue when they get hacked. Another business gets hacked every couple of days, so you could make thousands per month.

@allquixotic LOL. Nice idea ;)

Bonus if your bank gets hacked: the attackers will probably drain your account as part of the hack, so you can sue for damages on the things you weren't able to buy while your account reflected $0 (they'll pay back the money you lost, and then some).

What was the name of that Indian bank again? ;)

so..
why not go to both?
Your router should have a config page

they will probably be dynamic
I dont know how my router is setup exactually
my kid did it

lol
ask the kid then?
That's exactly what my dad does.
My network is soooo doomed when I move out.
2 routers, a switch and homeplug.

okay, bbl

3:18 PM
@Bob To fix my inability to get phone calls and data at the same time on my iPhone, I'll be pressing my old Droid Maxx from 2013 back into service with a no-contract carrier called Page Plus. They use Verizon's network, but service is way cheaper. They have pay as you go plans and other such niceties.
When all you care about is voice and text, the US has tons and tons of very high quality cellular offerings. Most of them even come with a small amount of included data that's more than enough for non-tetherers.
The only limiting factor with most of these companies is if you happen to need more than a handful of GBs of 4G data.
It's usually uneconomical.

@JourneymanGeek Well, by definition, it is "your router", or rather, the first router used by your computer and network devices

Heyo
if I burn a live iso (500megs) (no persistence) to a 2 gigs usb drive, what is stopping me from using the other 1.5 gigs as a persistent FAT partition and can I not mount /home to it?
I really don't understand how this live booting works :( is there some good resource to understand the working? (I know how to live boot ofcourse, I wanna know behind the scenes)

@AwalGarg You can do that
iirc, unetbootin allowed you to do that

@HackToHell how does it compare to persistent live usbs?

does win7 have active setup
Active Setup is a mechanism for executing commands once per user early during login. Active Setup is used by some operating system components like Internet Explorer to set up an initial configuration for new users logging on for the first time. Active Setup is also used in some corporations’ software distribution systems to create an initial customized user environment. Active Setup uses both machine-specific data and user-specific data. The machine part consists of a list of components identified by a GUID each. The user part is basically a mirror of the machine data, but it does not initially...

@RecycleBin My Google-Fu says An Active Setup Primer

useful link

"You've probably seen Active Setup in action before but may not have known it was "Active Setup".
"For instance, the first time you logged into Windows you may have seen a status window advising you it was "setting up personalized settings". Essentially, Active Setup is a mechanism to trigger one or more actions to be run once per user. Windows looks to the Active Setup area of the machine profile (HKLM) and sees if it matches the current user profile (HKCU) copy of the subkey, runs any jobs necessary and then makes HKLM and HKCU match (signifying jobs have run and not need to run again). "
A lot of software that requires a reboot after installation uses this mechanism to setup stuff for the logged in user (first time initialisation for example).

Hello Everyone,

If a user belongs to two different groups, whenever they create a folder/file, does all the users in both groups they belong to inherit what ever permission they gave to the folder and file?
