12:03 AM
@Bob I heard of this game... A bit like Hatoful Boyfriend, isn't it?

12:15 AM
has anyone been watching stranger things?

12:27 AM
@Burgi my partner and I just started watching it
Impression so far: it's Elfen Lied lightly cut with Prey and leaning much more heavily on the horror

me and my GF watched it this past two weekends
our impression was ET mixed with silent hill (weird floaty bits) with a light sprinkle of general sci-fi or outer limits

lol I can hear two of the guys here at work talking about mining bitcoins in the lunchroom. One of them is saying all you need is one of the little USB sticks things to get started.

USB things...?
don't you need a crap ton of GPUs in parallel and free electricity?
does NZ have free electricity?
i'm thinking pacific ring of fire + challenging geography = free power
that or you have a horde of orcs on treadmills... wait a minute....
;)

Bob
12:45 AM
@Burgi ASICs

@Burgi that's entirely how orthanc was funded

@Bob do they suck up much of the other system resources? could you get (to take the example to its extreme) an early 2000s PC and fill the USB slots with these ASIC devices and be quids in?
@JourneymanGeek heh

Speaking of USB mining... I saw these on AliExpress the other day...
Fits in an M.2 slot and has a USB plug.
How likely is it that this would work with a USB drive as a fast storage?

1:01 AM
0_0
shouldn't there be a chip of some flavour there?
also, I have no idea where one of those would be useful ._.

@JourneymanGeek On a M.2 slot, silly.

smacks @ThatBrazilianGuy
no like why would you trade off an M.2 slot (which is fast) for a single USB 3.0?

@JourneymanGeek ...with a large M.2 slot that has a USB plug?

with a rolled up M.2 PCB with a USB plug... natch.

Whatcs a natch?

1:07 AM
like a nacho, only crunchier

I thought it was when someone snatched your nachos

thinks @ThatBrazilianGuy needs to go back to obedience school
natch = naturally

Bob
@MichaelFrank "USB drive as a fast storage" I'll just let you think about that for a second...

@JourneymanGeek Your modship is giving you weird fetishes...

@Bob .__.

1:15 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy grim....

I'm smacked and sent to a punishment institution and I'm in the wrong?!
Stop victim blaming!

1:28 AM
anyway

Q: My PC hangs and the screen flashes once a month

Korneliusz7My PC hangs and the screen flashes on average once a month at random times. Sometimes it happens when I do something, sometimes when I do nothing. I have to power off or reset to continue to work on my PC. It looks very artistic, like fireworks. I attached two videos that show how it looks. T...

Almost looks like RAM was removed from the computer while it was running.
Hence...
> Is your computer's memory properly seated?

Not quite the same as on the OP's videos, at some display content is visible (whereas all the screen content is gone on the videos I've linked to), but improperly seated memory cannot be ruled out.
Otherwise... it's probably the processor graphics.
My gut tells me it's the processor graphics but the symptoms given mean that other causes need to be ruled out.

Grr... For whatever reason, the work network won't allow me to download Apple Firmware updates, through iTunes or from the cdn... Does anyone know of a mirror for the .ipsw files?

1:55 AM
@MichaelFrank No. Please don't circumvent your employer's restrictions. If you have a problem, talk with your supervisor or open a support ticket.

> Eduard,

I've got some very unusual results to report that I can't explain in any way.

If you'll recall, my original problem was that the R9000 was stopping all network traffic after a fairly short uptime, and a reboot of the router temporarily fixed the problem.

I then switched from the R9000 back to the Verizon-supplied router for a while. But with that unit, I was getting frequent packet loss problems. It may have been an overheating or physical connection issue -- I still have no idea why it was so bad.
my latest email to Netgear support on a long-running ticket about the Nighthawk X10 R9000

AMD Ryzen Mobile is off to a good start, but some optimization may still be needed - the bad battery life result would seem to be due to a lack of GPU video decode acceleration.
@allquixotic Well... my R7800 sometimes glitches with HTTPS traffic on my phone, but these issues are rare and brief.

Bob
2:12 AM
@MichaelFrank Any particular file you want? I can mirror one for you.

@Bob Thanks for the offer. Turns out someone else in the team already has the files.

Bob
Cool.

Huh.

I had a quick Google search as well, turns out most of the "mirror" sites, just link to the Apple CDN.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ooh, another guy arguing with fox
funfun

2:20 AM
@Bob I'm certain the only reason he bothers with the android app is he uses/needs it

@davidbak I think most of my mass came from chips, actually... — akaioi 21 hours ago

O_O

@Bob and... 0 spam since I switched to modern HTTPs settings. 2 views since I set up google analytics.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If you want accurate analytics you should probably self-host something :P
I think a lot of people block ga now

@Bob suggestions? ;p
I suppose we could do something off ngnix logs
@Bob that said, I'm trying to figure out if anyone ever reads it sooooo

Bob
2:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek I've not actually tried anything, but Piwik looks nice

@allquixotic, found this gem looking back:
Jul 19 at 21:53, by allquixotic
oh, if you're buying Seasonic I don't think you could break your PSU even if you exceed its advertised wattage; they're virtually the highest-quality PSU maker on the planet
Jul 19 at 21:54, by allquixotic
they build their PSUs like Dover builds elevators: build in a ridiculous amount of over-engineering "just in case" 30 morbidly obese people try to squeeze inside at once :D
lol

(this is the supply inside Astaroth, and the fan hardly ever runs in semi-passive mode)
I still remember that old Athlon XP Thoroughbred machine we had. The power supply was noisy as hell.
(custom built, a hand-me-down from my uncle, with a generic power supply)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek sooooo someone wants me to add ... arabic? support to GrowlToToast

o0
@Bob not bad for something we assumed I'd be othe only one using? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Well, I used GoAccess quite a while back and it was pretty good. Had a chron script that regularly parsed the log and generated an HTML report.

Bob
and I still need to get back to TrickleEdit sometime
but I want to wait for webext to stabilise a bit more first... still some missing stuff I want

2:40 AM
(Its worth remembering, I'm more curious to if anyone ever reads my blog than exact readership)
Its not like I make money off it

Bob
@bwDraco Access logs aren't a great substitute for a full analytics package.
There's usually a lot of noise in logs.
Most bots don't run JS though :)

@Bob Yeah. Lots of spammers hitting the site.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, Piwik looks pretty easy and it'll probably be more accurate than Google if only because it won't be blocked :P

@bwDraco @JourneymanGeek Well, I used GoAccess quite a while back and it was pretty good. Had a cron script that regularly parsed the log and generated an HTML report. (source)

Hm. Unless you count NoScript-type blocking.

@Bob I'm basing my lack of spam of akmiset and comments in queue
(but ya, I might get that set up over the afternoon)

Q: Origins of quote: "Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup."

Andrew BickertonI've grown up loving the quote "Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup." and I've been searching around to find out where it came from (with only a small amount of luck). I discovered that it came from Suzanne McMinn, however, I have no references...

1 hour later…
5:43 AM
@bwDraco nice

5:59 AM
At 2:39: I don't recall seeing a lithium-ion battery bubbling like this anywhere else.

6:12 AM
First time I've seen someone take a heat gun to a lithium-ion battery.
I see lots of puncture tests, but this is the first video I've seen where someone managed to make a battery catch fire by directly heating it.

Bob
erm
@JourneymanGeek does the growl thing still work on 1709?

@Bob I'm still on 1703 ;p
no auto update yet, and I haven't quite felt like upgrading everything the other way

Bob
@JourneymanGeek same :P
but I'm doing this on my test machine
which is 1709
and... it doesn't seem to work o.O

ahh
I er, haven't set up growl on the new download box rebuild either

Bob
6:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek just so I'm not imagining things... what happens if you run GrowlToToast.Toaster.exe?

I'm brainfarting over where that's supposed to be

Bob
@JourneymanGeek uhh... %LocalAppData% someplace
\Growl\2.0.0.0\Displays\GrowlToToast\Toaster

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Growl\2.0.0.0\Displays\GrowlToToast>Toaster
'Toaster' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Bob
it's a folder :P
actually never mind
cause I think you're still running the original version
which processes args differently

Bob
7:24 AM
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
according to the docs I'm supposed to have a shortcut in the start menu for this to work at all o.O
O_O how did this ever work
This is so incredibly dodgy.

^ Help?
1, 2 or 3?
3 is the last resort, right?
So either 1 or 2...
Another copy of file?

Bob
7:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm so confused right now

@Bob it was a heck of a hack job ;p

Bob
@Boris_yo E: none of the above

There is no E. What would you do?
Use different PDF viewer?
I would but there is no F.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek but... but... it worked before!

Bob
7:44 AM
gah. I'm probably going to have to create an installer
annoying thing is it works on my dev vm on 1703 but not the test vm on 1709

8:21 AM
I have boot CD of backup and recovery software that I can't identify. Is there a way to find out what software was used to create boot CD?
Could be Macrium or Comodo but I don't know.
Maybe they all have some configuration file with traces as to what program was used?

user226528
@Boris_yo Causes of the file not opening could be (1) corrupt file or (2) the file using a newer format that an older copy of Acrobat Reader does not support. So, both updating the app and requesting another copy of the file are valid options. Reinstalling the app is not a valid option.

@FleetCommand These are both valid answers but there is only one choice.

8:44 AM
morning

@bwDraco Dover?
is that an elevator company?
or is this a joke after the loading bridge at calais collapsed

9:19 AM
Morning all
And a good death to windows 10, as soon as possible.

2.1 has a ..... whisk?!

whoo
that covers everything I think I need other than mounting for bias lighting v3
and this will give me the ability to turn off the lights with a remote control

@djsmiley2k childs sound like hard work

also design it for easy teardown and swapping around parts

> The remote computer’s location appears to be: Brazil (BR).

9:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek you got solder and a iron?
@Burgi he is definately a boy @Burgi XD

@djsmiley2k yeah

muuuurggggggh each time i eat I feel liekl throwing up
this is no fun

@djsmiley2k I did the previous version too
I'm just not happy with some aspects of the design

the majority of hack attempts on our brand new server are coming from china/korea but overnight it swapped to south america...

@JourneymanGeek sure
I got laods of ws8108 light strips I could do somethign with

9:43 AM
I kinda want to do this so I can replace sections separately and turn off one or both sets

@ToxicFrog Ended up getting Dosage installed... It's a very slow process to get these strips it seems. D:

@JourneymanGeek are these going behind monitors?

yup
I want to mount them on metal or acrylic. Magnetic mounts for one, VESA for the other

10:38 AM
Anyone here who plays or played startopia?
I got mine yeara ago via GOG.
But it currently is one steam form less than an euro

@Hennes Kinda reminds me of Machines!
Also... Damn, a Steam Sale. :D

user226528
Someone I know, by mistake, deposited $5000 in his Steam wallet.

user226528
I am surprised how some people can afford such a huge mistake.

user226528
By the way, happy Turkey Murder day everyone. ;)

Why murder them at all. There are not even tasty enough to eat.
So murder, freeze, dip in boiloing oil with the ice still inside, visit burns hospital and give htanks?

Google Translate is unreliable. I change my sentence slightly and the translation changes dramatically. Sometimes I fix a spelling mistake that it has detected and even offered translation for the detected version. But the translation changes. So, one thing can have two translations: When you spell it right, and when you spell it wrong but GT understand what you mean anyway.

user226528
Sadly, a comparative translation is impossible, because Bing doesn't offer translation to Latin. It supports Klingon, but not Latin!

lol

@FleetCommand Why do you need to translate to latin? Just curious because I had taken up latin a while back as a hobby.

user226528
It's work-related. There are a couple of people who think knowing Latin is a feature of highly literate people.

12:11 PM

@JourneymanGeek don't forget your connectors - remember how soldering was a bad idea?
also some double sided tape could be useful. the daiso ones are the perfect width

@JourneymanGeek I have that wireless switch module!
I'm using it to make a motorized lock for my cupboard

1:47 PM

finally cleaning out my room and PC case
and i discover the intake fans aren't running o_O

Guess what I discovered?
I'm a cat.

@Bob eh, those solder well
but I'll be soldering, then heatshrinking,
ya. double sided tape and whatever I'm using for support will be obtained locally

@JourneymanGeek (Some) M.2 slots contain native USB leads, so no.
It's just a M.2 USB to USB-A socket adapter basically. Perhaps if you're short on USB ports, or you want an internal USB boot drive (which many servers or embedded systems boot off)

1:56 PM
@FMLCat Is running an OS off of a USB drive smart?
They don't have too many read-write cycles, do they?

@rahuldottech Yes
@rahuldottech Some do, some OSs can be made read-only as well.

@FMLCat I mean, I do that all the time.

@rahuldottech stuff like ESX is designed to have very little written to on a boot drive

@FMLCat wait, seriously?

and tends to do heavy writes to a SAN

1:57 PM
@rahuldottech There's a reason many/most server boards actually have an on-board USB and/or SATA DOM header
@JourneymanGeek Exactly this

(heck, some even boot off SD)

@JourneymanGeek I don't even know what ESX is
@JourneymanGeek it would be so cool to have SD as an option in my boot menu

@rahuldottech It's a virtualisation/hypervisor OS

@rahuldottech VMware's VM hypervisor OS

> A hypervisor or virtual machine monitor (VMM) is computer software, firmware or hardware that creates and runs virtual machines.

1:59 PM
It's a mini operating system whose sole job is to run other operating systems

Ahh. Makes sense
@FMLCat Yeah, I figured. Seems cool!

Rather than say, running VMWare on Windows, or Virtualbox on MacOS, it strips out the Windows and MacOS and just runs bare VMWare on the machine itself.
Takes a few hundred megabytes, and because the VMs themselves are stored elsewhere, is perfectly fine to run off a USB drive or SD card (or compact flash back in the days)

Ooooh. That's nice.

@FMLCat and runs a console based off a stripped down, and very old version of fedora

The machine's only used as a temporary vessel for the VMs so if the hardware fails just pull out the USB drive and chuck it in a replacement blade

2:01 PM
@rahuldottech also, ESXi is free. The basic management software is as well IIRC

@JourneymanGeek Eww, you use the console? :-o

@FMLCat naw
at job -3 we used vsphere

I don't recall ever using the ESX(i) console professionally. We've always just had the install images preconfigured for remote management or the thing's been running for ten years already so I never was involved in the setup

ya, that's typical
@rahuldottech @Bob the big pain point now is I have my LEDs on two big planks and the angle isn't quite right
I figure I could redo it with thinner material, and design it so I can turn the lights off and on (while still tapping power from my desktop - or optionally switching to a 12v wall wart) and designing it so I could detach separate lighting 'modules' while testing or troubleshooting

is it worth just blocking china from our server?

2:11 PM
Do you have chinese customers?

nope

also blocking what from china?
well, might be
and your users will probably blame the GCFW anyway

:)
they are hitting SSH like crazy

ahh
Ya, blocking them from SSH should be fine
also, I know this sounds stupid but other than the common sense stuff, like key based auth... using a non standard port might help

AH! turns out i needed to configure the firewall to only let SSH access from our office IPs

2:23 PM
facepalm
Why was your SSH open to the world if it only ever needed to be accessible to the internal network?
That's a major security cockup there

blame our hosting company
i think they just load it as default wide open

i blame u for not hosting.

2:43 PM
i don't have time to configure fracking web servers
maybe if the deals we have lined up for the new year we can hire someone to do servers for me

3:01 PM
lol

3:11 PM
@Burgi Me me me!
Wait, Manchester
Isn't that like the stabbing capital of england?

i thought that was nottingham

Up here we have Glasgow

its efficient that the scottish government has managed to consolidate all the possible social problems into a single location

@FMLCat You're in scotland now?
Also, I fail to understand why I must learn memory address allocation of arrays in C++
Like... how will me knowing this ever serve any purpose?

nottingham is shootings

3:26 PM
What do you mean by "learn memory address allocation of arrays"? Placement new?

@rahuldottech I've always been in Scotland
@Bob guess what? Those "explosion proof glass " screen protectors explode and send glass shards everywhere when you try to take them off

@FMLCat Right. Except when you were doing the world tour thingy

@rahuldottech That was for like, two weeks

@FMLCat oh wait, seriously?
My bad, either I got it all wrong, or my memory fails me

I like to think it's both

3:39 PM
@FMLCat It probably is :P

@rahuldottech i think you might have been "occupied"

@Burgi I have been single for 1.5 months now and I am loving it
I mean
My ex is going around spreading all sorts of crap about me
But no one believes her
So it's all good

4:00 PM
@Burgi How much do your employer would pay for that? Is it worth for a foreigner from... I dunno... maybe South America?
Just kidding :P
In other news, I tried to register a new domain for the pro-bono job at that organization...

grumble grumble
I am so tired today.

we'll probably get a junior full stack and i can offload some crap to them

The registrar info has a contact person with an email address. Back from 1999.
Messages sent there are returned with an unknown recipient error.
I said it was a person? It's a "orgname@hosting.com", from an hosting no one there ever heard about
I'm not surprised, because it's not the first time it has happened to me.

thats the sort of crap i had to deal with last year

The very first site I ever made (oh god it's so UGLY!) back in 2009 had its domain bought from a random domain provider
Seven years later the owner asked me to help him migrate hostings and forwarded me his passwords (safe procedures, huh?)
The domain provider had been bought, and its buyer had been bought and...
I had to make phonecalls to a handful of USA phone numbers
Each of them telling me to call another number
I started calling the abuse contact for the domain registrars
To make matters worse, I was not the registrant so they couldn't provide me any relevant information
Lovely

@ThatBrazilianGuy Have you researched about working in Estonia?

Not really. I haven't had much free time =/

I have lenovo laptop with W7 recovery partition on its HDD. I want to switch HDD with new SSD but it won't have recovery partition to install W7.
@ThatBrazilianGuy How many hours do you work per day?

5:20 PM
I'm having some personal issues as well.

why would you move to the frozen wastes of eastern europe?

I don't know if I would. Boris suggested so. I haven't looked into it yet, at all. So far I don't even know where the country is located.

5:35 PM
@rahuldottech because knowing how to ignore pointers and go hardcore is the only way!

5:48 PM
I have a question about emails. What causes an email to be formatted to a certain line width (w.r.t. characters)? My main concern are the URLs and network paths? Is it the email software of the sender that truncates it, or is it done on the receiving end?

Email formatting is a dark and obscure art. Anything you thought made sense goes out of the window.
However, it is more of a rendering issue (how is this being displayed by the recipient) than of URLs
Usually, you can trust the URLs remain the same and any discrepancies are due to the sender platform. Usually.
That said, I don't deal with email layouts and / or mailing campaigns, that would be other members of my team.

@AlexandreVaillancourt erm, either?

Whereas you have a few competing major browser standards / rendering engines, for email it's a few dozen. You fix your layout for one, it breaks other three.

also i doubyt the rfc says anything about formatting
or very simple ascii stuff

Sometimes a marketing / mailing platform (mailchimp, etc) rewrites the URLs for tracking purposes and if it's poorly done it could cause issues, but that's not email per se to blame.
What's the exact issue you're having, @AlexandreVaillancourt?

6:06 PM
rfc 2045
> 2.10. Lines

"Lines" are defined as sequences of octets separated by a CRLF
sequences. This is consistent with both RFC 821 and RFC 822.
"Lines" only refers to a unit of data in a message, which may or may
not correspond to something that is actually displayed by a user
agent.
And even base 64 encoded text is to be a maximum of 76 characters wide

6:31 PM
10 GbE network adapters on sale for Black Friday: anandtech.com/show/12067/…

@ThatBrazilianGuy @djsmiley2k Thanks for your input. Some of my colleagues often send us some emails containing URLs or network paths, and they end up broken, split on two lines. This takes more time than it should to consult these pages, and I'd like to find a way to suggest them to fix it :P

6:45 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt If it's in Outlook, they can wrap the URL in <url here> to prevent it from intepreting spaces as the end of the URL/UNC
I guess it's probably similar in other email clients as well.

6:57 PM
@MichaelFrank I'll take a look at that!

tbh that sounds like your clients handing of urls is broken, rather than the email client itself

Oh, sorry if it was unclear, by "client" I always meant "email client". I tried to send an email containing an URL to myself with Thunderbird in text only format and the URL came out fine. I think the other colleagues use Outlook and are unaware of the issue.

ah, likely
but.... you maybe able to configure thunderbird so it lets urls span multiple lines

Hmm, that would mean it would remove the added line breaks?

nah, just that it'd understand something like this:

http://www.example.
com/googleisawesomeyo
See, chat clearly doesn't like the idea, even tho it turned it into a url anyway o_O

7:10 PM
Hmm, yeah, but I'm not sure it would solve my problem if it converts only the first part. I'll still have to stitch the parts myself..

yeah
So firstly, these emails must be html multipart

Yeah, that's what I'll suggest them.

so in the 'source' of the email it's gonna have something like <a href=/some/link>/some/link</a><br />the/rest/of/that/link
the problem is getting the </a> in the right place, and if it works for everyone else, it's your thunderbird that's rendering wrong from the multipart.
the original email likely doesn't have any breaks in it

I don't know what other email clients receive; I might take a look at how the email was saved in their sent folder. I know if I send and receive it with Thunderbird, it works fine. Not sure with Outlook.

> the [...] primary conversion bridges [...] are comically oversized for the power requirements [...] The two bridges [...] could, in theory, handle up to 4.5kW with a mere 90V AC input.
Jul 19 at 21:54, by allquixotic
they build their PSUs like Dover builds elevators: build in a ridiculous amount of over-engineering "just in case" 30 morbidly obese people try to squeeze inside at once :D
lol @ "comically oversized"

7:20 PM
@djsmiley2k @ThatBrazilianGuy @MichaelFrank Thanks for your input!

I've not used thunderbird for a number of years
but that was the kind of thing that'd drive me crazy about it

Thunderbird renders like Firefox as it uses the same rendering engine.
(have been using Thunderbird for many years)

@AlexandreVaillancourt also worth having a look at the source text of the email
if the link is valid in that, then it's just the thunderbird fdront end screwing it up[
but again it's possible outlook is using some dirty hack
whoever's done that, funneh.
I b'ame @Burgi

7:39 PM
@djsmiley2k Ok, that's interesting. Thunderbird seems to be able to reconstruct this:
\\server\this\thing\is\very\long\hehehehe hehehehe\hehehehe
hehehe\heheheh ehehehe\file.html
when I sent it to myself, but it did not reconstruct the one my colleague sent. Further investigation is needed.
