Bob
12:15 AM
@FMLCat well not as late as usual :P
Please watch out for de-brie as truckload of cheese has rolled and blocked the Hume Motorway near Goulburn. Please avoid the area unless you're bringing crackers...

:-D
Actually think it might be time to move back to OVH
Oh double RAM only for servers in Canada? Wtf

Bob
@FMLCat Huh, OVH has a cloud desktop thing?
@FMLCat Only the HOST range, too (Xeon-D IIRC)

30% off all soyoustart servers, if only any of them came with hybrid storage

Bob
@FMLCat if only any of them were in stock
oh wait that was kimsufi
I can get a local Note8 for ~AU$930
tempted

That's not terrible availability
Could actually get two SYS servers, one with SSD and one with HDD for less than I'm paying now, and just NAS them together
@Bob Apparently Note 9 might finally have the fingerprint sensor back in a sensible position again but the tech still won't be ready for the S9
@Bob Also there's only a £5 difference, meh.
Odd, it's $14 difference on OVH.au

12:50 AM

1:27 AM
@Bob what's your preferred mobile browser?

1:41 AM
@Bob piwik is actually kinda nice
Actually has better information than google analytics

Bob
@FMLCat Firefox
Used to use Opera Mobile, stuck around on 12.10 for a while after they dropped Presto before switching to Firefox ~ 2013-14

:(
I miss the old opera

Cool

@JourneymanGeek :D

That. THAT. is.... not the best part @MichaelFrank

> One of the responders to that tweet was Matthew Prince, co-founder and chief executive of Cloudflare, who said:
I could do this in a different, but equally effective, way. Sent note to our GC to see if we can without breaking any laws.
You mean this bit?

THAT. Is the best part.

@eastdakota @JoshConstine Did ya'll see this? It's the sweetest of irony. It's art https://twitter.com/dumbfook/status/933497474479779840
haaa

2:50 AM
yup

3:11 AM
... looks like my DX orders are going to get seriously split up

Bob
o.O

well I kinda have 2 items sent in one shipment. I have 6 items over 2 orders so...
at least 3 packages?

3:36 AM
So... I am about to get back to PowerShell development. Astaroth makes an incredible environment for development if it were not for the Ryzen segfault issue, but that primarily affects C/C++ development and not PowerShell or other interpreted languages.
Should I use the PowerShell ISE, or get Visual Studio Code?

Bob
considering the ISE is deprecated?
also, you don't really need (or have) an "incredible" environment

I'm leaning towards VS Code...

Bob
you need ... Windows, a keyboard, and a monitor
even Windows is arguable now

I guess I'm going with Visual Studio Code.
There's an official PowerShell add-on.

Bob
like, if you can run a modern web browser, you can run powershell no problem
heck, even if you can't run a modern web browser

3:38 AM
lol

Bob
that said, while powershell is nice for some automation tasks, its syntax stinks
it's got a great framework and environment. it's got nice cmdlets. it's not a nice language

4:40 AM
...wow. I save a file with a .ps1 extension and the PowerShell Integrated Console magically appears in the VS Code window!

@bwDraco Do I see alien ship operator control panel?

lol
That's EVGA Precision XOC (graphics card overclocking tool) on the left.

And what's that reversed pentagram on the left? Are you a freemason?

That's the seal of Astaroth, the demon after which the system is named.

System?

4:44 AM
The desktop.
I've mentioned Astaroth enough times in this room that you probably should know.

I have been away.
Didn't notice.
Do you use virtual machine?

Oct 17 at 21:21, by bwDraco
So guys... After all this talk about Astaroth over the last few months, I think I will finally be able to put the dream PC together next week, just in time for Assassin's Creed Origins. This is my first fully-custom PC build, and it will be a very high-dollar build (~$3,500), though Mother will reimburse me for a substantial portion of the cost so this isn't an issue. I'm comfortable working with the guts of a PC, but again, first build. What do I need to know before I start building?
Brand new desktop.
@Boris_yo Hmm? I've been playing with VirtualBox a bit.

@bwDraco Just need a kind of "sandbox" because I will be surfing various websites and rating them.

Care to expand upon this?

Don't want to catch malware and viruses on my main system.

4:46 AM
Anti-malware project?

Contributing to search algorithm improval project.

Sadly, I might not be able to help you here. I've been rather busy lately.

@bwDraco Think Samsung 250GB SSD will get down to $69 this Black Friday or later?

So... any hints on PowerShell?
@Boris_yo The lowest price I see right now from a major retailer is US$89.99.
(Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB)

@bwDraco Does VirtualBox have Windows XP or 7 is also available?

4:58 AM
@Boris_yo It'll run these operating systems as guests, but you need to supply your own license.

@bwDraco Exciting isn't it? I would build PCs for entire life if it was a paid hobby...
The best job is a high-paid hobby. - Henry Ford

lol
Took a bit of customization, but looks nice.

Bob
5:27 AM
looks unusable

@bwDraco As guests? How will it limit me?
@Bob What virtual machine software would you recommend if I want to run Windows 7 on it and try to recreate experience as close as to running it outside of virtual machine?
My configuration:

i5 2.6 MHz Core Duo
8GB RAM
Intel HD
250GB SSD

s/MH/GH/
You'd probably want more RAM and storage. This is a bit confusing, but the processor also seems rather old.

Bob
@Boris_yo How much are you willing to pay?

Do you have a processor model number?

I think he means a dual core core i5 rather than a c2d ;p

5:41 AM
2.6 GHz suggests a mobile processor. Which generation?

also worth looking at what you're trying to do
you can run, say a linux install off very little

Dual-core i5... probably a mobile (type U) part, judging from the clock frequency and core count.
I'm not sure this sort of processor would work well for virtualization.
Yeah, you can run VMs on this sort of hardware, but you might not get an optimal experience.

Bob
It'll work just fine.
The only question, as far as which piece of software you want to use, is how much you are willing to pay for it.

If you're willing to pay for a commercial solution... VMware Workstation Pro is on sale for Black Friday, though it will still cost you $150 (regular $230).
Well, regular price is $250 (though I'm seeing a $230 street price).
Otherwise, VirtualBox will do just fine and generally delivers very good performance on modern hardware.
(I started out with Windows Virtual PC when I was in high school but quickly took up VirtualBox)

Bob
vbox's biggest failings are poor graphics support and questionable stability
vmware is the de facto standard paid solution
hyper-v is probably good too

5:57 AM
...also had experience with Hyper-V, both client and standalone server, though I've had more than a few issues with the hypervisor causing problems with networking on the host machine.
VirtualBox is normally pretty stable in my experience, though I did have one case of a host crash (not sure if this is the fault of the hardware or the hypervisor).
Yeah. Their graphics needs work.

@bwDraco i5 2520M

@Boris_yo Ah. That will do some light-duty virtualization work.

@Bob Are there better than vbox and free?
I remember few years ago I had VmWare and it was free...

You should be able to achieve what you want, but I'd suspect you're going to be limited by the amount of memory on your system.
@Boris_yo There's a basic, free version called VMware Workstation Player.

Bob
@bwDraco huh, thanks. didn't realise there was a sale :P

6:01 AM
It'll only run one VM at a time and is missing some of the more advanced features, but has the same higher performance and better OS support as the Pro version.

Bob
@Boris_yo if you don't need snapshots and are using it non-commercially, I think vmware player is stll free
@bwDraco 8 GB is fine

@Bob I will be doing independent contractor work... Sounds commercial?
Might need to read their terms what they assume under commercial use.

That would qualify as commercial use.

Bob
@Boris_yo If you're getting paid for it, that is commercial.
> VMware Workstation Player is free for personal non-commercial use (business and non profit use is considered commercial use).
wait the non-commercial use is section 6.8 here vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/product/…

6:16 AM
VirtualBox's core package is open-source but the extension pack requires a paid license for commercial use ($50 per named user or $1,000 per socket). Unfortunately, the minimum order quantity for named-user licenses from the Oracle Store is 100, though you may be able to get a single license from a reseller (sans support, but allowing commercial use).
I'd probably go with VMware Workstation Pro at this point.

Bob
> Error encountered while creating user profile
gee thanks vmware
such a descriptive error message!

@bwDraco Thanks. Maybe I should pick Intel 250GB SSD that I use for cloning my main laptop, back it up and install W7 on it and operate on my second laptop? It currently has HDD, 4GB of RAM and is slow.

If you have no other planned use for the laptop and have means to protect against a virus spreading through your network, that might be a good idea.
(e.g. if possible, put the test machine on its own VLAN)

@Bob Thanks. That's what I was looking for.
@bwDraco VLAN? You mean virtual zone or something which is enabled in router settings?
I have NOD32. I wonder if it's enough to be protected if I surf a lot of random websites...

@Boris_yo No security solution is bulletproof. For stuff like malware research, I'd recommend having multiple layers of security, most critically to ensure that the system is isolated in the event it gets infected.

6:34 AM
@bwDraco Yeah. It just sits there so I think why not use it. It's W10 and SSD will make it way faster with it's 4GB of RAM. I will try cloning it onto Intel SSD first and see how it goes.

You might need another Windows license.

I had side-effects of cloning on Intel i330 and 535 SSDs on my main laptop. Will see how it goes with secondary laptop. Samsung SSD cloned flawlessly though.
@bwDraco Nope. Same configuration, different storage drive. Will need to phone and transfer license.

Oh, okay. You're just transferring data to an SSD on a system with an existing license.

@bwDraco Yeah and there is no need to do above process. However if I was installing from zero I would have to follow that process. I did it once on W7 machine that I had motherboard replaced.
Called automatic number, written down new license and W7 has activated!
I expected to talk with 3rd country representative but Microsoft even cut their costs there.

@Boris_yo If it's on your Microsoft account, the process should be easier: support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20530/…

6:40 AM
You mean I can register licenses on my Microsoft account?
Is it free to create account?
Is it US-only?

7:01 AM
@bwDraco I don't think you can register OEM license there.
I also think yo u can't register retail license you bought offline.

Wait a sec. If you're using a Microsoft account to log into your computer, the license should be linked to your account.
Hmm...
May 17 '15 at 6:29, by DragonLord
I really just wish they would tie keys to Microsoft accounts so that this wouldn't happen.
Turns out they did implement this, after all!
(though not as flexibly as I wanted; you still can't reassign license seats arbitrarily, though reactivation after a hardware change is greatly simplified)

7:53 AM
Well, that’s a thing: there’s no Amazon app natively for Apple TV, but I can stream Amazon Prime Video at 1080p and great quality via AirPlay to my Apple TV connected to my new TV :D
So now I can watch anything on my TV that I could watch on my iPhone
Gotta love 802.11ac - the first actually good wireless standard

Nov 18 at 2:09, by Bob
@bwDraco Meh. Use the mobo. Didn't you get a high-end Asus board?
So... I've delegated case fan control to the motherboard.
Also fixed the speed control issue with the liquid cooler (turns out it wasn't delivering a full 12V to the pump)

1 hour later…
Bob
9:19 AM
o.O

@Bob and that runs android wear
I've actually been pretty happy with the replacement smartwatch so far
@bwDraco you probably shouldn't watch that ;p

@FMLCat was the drunk guy you?

11:37 AM
@FMLCat you could always stop living with scum

11:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek Not sure if serious or not... o.O

@MichaelFrank pretty sure serious

12:43 PM
Bob and Geek, how are commercial efforts in stores/online over there for Black Friday or Cyber Monday? Are those even a thing for you?
I saved $250 on a new TV and got some much needed peripheral upgrades such as a Logitech MX Ergo Plus trackball for my mom who has had wrist surgery

its only become a thing in the UK in the last two years

Hot items like the Nintendo Switch are holding their price very strongly, though. No sales.

it breaks our retail sector modelling
historically the final week before christmas was the busiest week for retail (on and offline)

@allquixotic I don't typically do sales and eh, not really in the market for anything. $$$ and all

the last few years they freaked out because the december figures are down because they've run a black friday campaign

12:48 PM
You know our economy isn’t doing too terribly when I fought for 20 minutes to find a parking space at the mall

this year they have learnt their lesson and not really advertised it

There were tons of people lined up waiting to park at Best Buy - people parking across the street and walking 0.5 miles to get there

only american companies (amazon, valve, et al) are doing black friday deals

On Thanksgiving evening - not even Black Friday itself

well that was strange...
we've failed over to our backup line

Bob
12:54 PM
@allquixotic Actually? Surprisingly quite good this year. Wasn't much last year.
Note8 for AU$980 at one of them
But nowhere near what the US gets :P
@allquixotic Did you see the OVH ones?

ok argos is doing black friday

man
Argos is like
the most british thing for me

@Bob I did, but I already renewed my current server through December 2018. The offers are nice, but not actually a better value than what I just paid

our upload!!!! :(
anyway lunch!

Bob
1:01 PM
@Burgi ...yes? is it supposed to be bad?
*cough*
:P

they have Xeon-Ds that are more expensive than the Ivy E5 I have, and the Xeon-D is on sale
the current SP-128 is one generation CPU newer (Haswell vs. Ivy that I have) and DDR4 instead of DDR3, otherwise the same -- and it's double the price
if I had the money I'd renew again for another year and have two years of service on the server, in case they decide to remove their "commercial consideration" or raise prices in the future

Bob
@allquixotic Well, I think it's the same price it's always been - you just got on the half-price deal :P

@Bob :D and apparently it's persistent
not something I'll give up easily! might hold on to it until/unless they do another, then I might upgrade to like a hypothetical Skylake SP-128 or something in future

1:48 PM
My Currency Meter Windows 7 gadget failing...
Anyone knows something better?
I like gadgets because its not running software...
And it also takes less resources.

> I like gadgets because its not running software...
._.

@djsmiley2k I can't URL? Reminds me of those clumsy IT client stories...
@JourneymanGeek It's not software that needs installing.

@Bob Please be online
is the OVH discover 1 VPS worth it?
It's 50% off right now
Resources:
CPU 1 vCore(s)
3.5 GHz
1 GB RAM
Storage: 30 GB SSD
Anti-DDoS Included
Traffic: 1 TB
I'd probably run shadowsocks on it

2:15 PM
@Bob yeah
our primary connection is 100/100

Wow, W10 is slow to a crawl on 4GB of RAM 2.1GHz dual core...
But I sure hope replacing HDD 5200RPM with SSD will help!

2:39 PM
@rahuldottech if all you're putting on that is a proxy, it's probably fine

3:11 PM
Hi! I am using duel boot Windows 10 with Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS on my Dell laptop. I often face the problem of 100% Hard disk usage on Windows 10. Earlier I solved it by disabling windows search pernenanlty. Recently I again faced that problem. Since windows stopped responding I had to force closing by pressing powe button.
Now Windows 10 is not starting properly. Automatic repair is not working, safe mode not booting. Also tried system restore which failed.
Hopefully I've repair disk created some time ago.
Now, by pressing F4 or F6 I am at the option to choose from:
After clicking on "Use a device", I have many options:
What are these?

this sounds like a question for the main site...

Actually I have couple of questions. Will post when I have working windows.

congrats on the diamond btw, when did that happen?

3:26 PM
I've tried some options but it's showing ^^
@Burgi do you know me before I am having a diamond?

depends when you had the diamond
your chat profile used to be this one:

Hi guys. Is it normal for a laptop to only boot if plugged in?

Q: Computer doesn't boot up, shows PXE error and/or "operating system not found", "no bootable device", "insert boot media", or other similar error

bwDracoMy computer no longer boots Windows or the installed operating system. Instead, I may get this error: PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable -or- Check cable connection! PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM. and/or one of the following messages or similar: Operating System not found No boot device av...

@Burgi As far as I remember, my chat profile used to belong to AU and U&L earlier.
@bwDraco Btw, finally from boot options, I tried selecting UFEI CD/DVD.. option which worked. Now, how to repair Win10 from disk?

3:49 PM
@Pandya might have been that
@morbidCode depends how dead the battery is

Automatic repair is not working and I've repair disk working. Now what options I do have in order to get windows working again?
Should I reset?
any other work-around to get current installation repaired?
anyone here familiar with repairing Windows 10?
@BenN
[Btw, going to try sfc /scannow from trouble shoot > command line]

!! Caaaat

4:27 PM
@Pandya Can you read the data from the disk in your repair environment?
If you don't already have them, now would be a great time to make backups

@BenN I think yes, I've done chkdsk /f multiple times for all the drives. Currentlyposting couple of questions on SU from Ubuntu, will check and reply you soon.

4:41 PM
@BenN I am currently on Ubuntu and can mount the windows partition and read all the files.
0
Q: How do I get rid of Windows stopped responding with 100 % disk usage?

PandyaI'm using Windows 10 with Ubuntu GNOME duel boot on Dell laptop. I sometimes (sometimes often) face the issue of Windows stopped responding and when I run taskmanager, found 100% disk usage. Earlier I solved this problem by disabling windows search permanently. However again I started to face the...

OK, do you have backups?

All the files, validly?
that's a nice claim

Oh 100% disk busy time not 100% disk full capacity

@BenN Actually my personal data is not stored on system drive.

Very good
From the picture you posted earlier, it looks like the volume is not bootable?
I haven't read everything in detail (still drinking my first cup of coffee), but is this machine also dual-booting something?

4:47 PM
@BenN I disabled fast booting from BIOS, now Windows repair disk is booting properly.

100% disk busy time suggests disk is broken

@FMLCat you mean C drive broken or whole the hard disk broken?

@Pandya The disk. There's only one disk.

@FMLCat oh! However currently I'm on Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS which is installed on the same machine.
working fine.

@Pandya Doesn't mean the disk isn't broken

4:53 PM
I had a linux machine run for 1.5 years with a dead raid controller which wouldn't write back to disk

oh! then what could be the problem?
0
Q: How do I repair Windows 10 from repair disk?

PandyaRecently due to the problem of windows stopped working with 100% disk usage, I have to press power button to close the OS. After then Windows is not starting properly. It doesn't reach to login or welcome message. I've tried booting safe mode but it doesn't boot into safe mode. Then I've tried...

the disk is dying

@Pandya Broken. Disk.
@djsmiley2k Everything is dying from the moment is it born... the question is, has it ever lived?

@djsmiley2k hard to believe. I brought new laptop just 6 months ago.
Btw, I need to install MS Office on Ubuntu thorough wine since I've to make some modification in my report.docx and presentation ppt and Windows not working. I think word will work but suspect of powerpoint through wine.

@FMLCat lol
yey measles is going to take out the antivaxers

5:07 PM
@Pandya Arguing from personal incredulity doesn't work, though. If the disk is broken, it's broken regardless of whether you are incredulous that such a young disk is broken. The laws of physics care not for our feelings unfortunately :(
Fire up Resource Monitor. Is anything doing a lot of reads or writes? If not, then your disk is dying.
All the "100% disk usage" in Task Manager means is that ATA commands are stacking up in the kernel's ATA subsystem ring buffer, which means that for whatever reason, your system is producing read/write commands faster than the disk can process them.
If the disk isn't processing them at all, then trivially the buffer will fill up in about 1 second or less.

@allquixotic ok.
Should I try Reset option? or how about it?

@allquixotic Windows doesn't often stack commands more than 4 or so deep so the actual command buffer rarely gets filled. Windows just hangs while waiting for the non-responses to not-come
@Pandya You should try a disk diagnostic tool which reads and prints SMART data and logs

@FMLCat Right. So every thread performing I/O to that disk that needs to submit commands to the buffer gets blocked.
Or if async then the kernel thread gets blocked and the user thread spins
@Pandya Look at Resource Monitor first.

@allquixotic Pretty much. But you'll often see the disk queue sat at between 4 and 8 in such situations, whereas "full" is usually around 32

If you're seeing 100% disk usage and freezes while heavy reads or writes are taking place, then you can work to stop those reads/writes from happening by terminating or fixing the offending programs

5:13 PM
@allquixotic Currently his Windows won't boot

ohhh...
heh, Windows won't boot and 100% disk usage being closely related points to one thing... disk failure

Last time it froze he turned it off with the power button and now it won't start

if your laptop is still under warranty I'd get the disk replaced; if not, you may have to buy one

@allquixotic How to? windows is not starting up? can I see from command prompt?

@Pandya nope, if you really want to see it you'll have to repair/reset Windows.

5:25 PM
Or do a SMART diagnostics from Ubuntu
Read errors should be logged by the disk firmware and accessible from either OS

@FMLCat Yes, let me know how can I do it.

@Pandya smartctl -x /dev/your-hdd-here

ok. I think it might take much time; going to sleep now, will run tomorrow.
Bye!

It takes five seconds, unless the disk is super broken

if i ever meet the australian arsehole who thought running a mac pro off utility power was the safe and responsible way to run a server i'm going to beat him to death with a metal pole

5:35 PM
@Burgi Pfft
I've seen worse

i seriously doubt it

I've seen a Mac Pro running off utility power... under someone's desk.

lol
but was it acting as the primary file server?

It was a G4 I think
And yes, it was the departmental server for three years

brilliant

5:36 PM
Wait it wasn't a g4, that wasn't even a pro
Yeah it was a Power Mac G5
Not even got "Pro" in the name!

i'm also pissed off at the IT support company

PS @Burgi, OVH is doing a black friday discount on managed hosting wink wink nudge nudge
OK I'm now having serious trouble remembering which one it was

i've had an open ticket with them to move our servers to the UPS for at least 6 months
@FMLCat our web servers are fine; its internal servers for DHCP, AD and file storage that are the problem

Eh, at least they have a UPS. This person's desk didn't!

we have a UPS but nothing is plugged in to it!

5:41 PM
@Burgi Oh. Thought I remembered you whinging about web hosting being borked the other day
I have a UPS and it's not plugged into anything!

@FMLCat our supplier was just being slow sending me logins

Oh that wasn't related to the "Oops my SSH is open to the world and getting bruteforce spam from china" inciden then

well sort of

@Burgi depending on what kind of managed hosting you need/want
i ould atually ask at work for someone to ontat whoever
hmmmm my 'sea' key isn'[t working again
ccc yey
it's bak
.....ffs
cccc, wtf

Ohmigod you nearly gave me a heart attack

5:45 PM
we've already put the contract out to tender

How could you live without being able to type cat?!

you'd need to be able to support mac clients

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt ticked it off on my CV

@Burgi so it's not just managing the servers eh

hmmmmm.... i think my friend has forgotten about meeting for beer

5:47 PM
@Burgi we manage some macs for a rather large purfume company

i'm going to the pub

o/7

7:16 PM
I give up with motherboard fan control.
These aren't PWM fans so the degree of control available is very limited.
Also, the motherboard temperature sensor isn't very responsive, while the CPU temperature fluctuates too much.
A thermocouple connector is on the board and I can put the supplied thermocouple on something like the graphics card heatsink, but that's really inelegant and can't be cable-managed easily.
And I fixed a common configuration error which often leads to pump failure: the liquid cooler pump running at less than 100% speed. The pump on the Corsair H100i v2 is designed to operate at a full 12V at all times; the radiator fans adjust their speed based on the coolant temperature.
(sadly, Corsair Link doesn't seem to work)
I'm not in a mood to replace fans on the case or radiator.
