I'm having issues with my home internet.

Bob
o.O

9:21 AM
Google and fb loads. Nothing else seems to
It's not dns since I can't get on my irc bouncer

Bob
@JourneymanGeek are you on your phone?

9:42 AM
hm
annnd
I'm back
@Vincent not a great question but on topic here
@Bob I was

@JourneymanGeek shall I migrate? It's a bit of a waste if it ends up closed here as well

@Vincent I'd give it a shot

Ok, thanks! :D

@Bob I THINK it was tunnelbear

You gots it. Thanks for the help!

9:51 AM
and blah
I should have just tunneled it through the dedi ;p

@Vincent What the what?

@OliverSalzburg too late, sorry :)

Apple rejected our iOS app update because our promo material screenshots contained the word "demo". We've been using the same screenshots for years and now they reject the update >:(
What a morning

10:04 AM
@PatoSáinz Good job I don't pay for the A/C

@Bob So 20% of JmG's rep?

a website I use a fair bit and won't talk about here seems semi broken
@qasdfdsaq actually...
@Bob could you run that against John T?

@allquixotic Well I did kinda say that yesterday
Also just had a hour long Thai massage.

@qasdfdsaq that was somewhat less than I'd assumed

10:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek Eh?
I'd actually hoped for less, since it was a random, unscheduled, after-lunch jaunt

10:34 AM
27ms from India to CA

@HackToHell No, and no

247ms to sg
@qasdfdsaq cache server ?

No.

@qasdfdsaq I meant my residual reputation ;p

@qasdfdsaq so ??
What's wrong with it

10:37 AM
25ms to Bangalore

Ah, are they multi casting ?
The same thing they do with the public DNS and all

No.

IP lookup tells you who it belongs to, not where it is located

Ahhh, right
You on your phone ?

10:46 AM
No

Also Y NO TF2 servers in Bangalore

No demand?
Indians not rich enough?

@HackToHell EVERYONE IS TOO BUSY WORKING!
(My old company merged with an indian one. Their offices basically work 24/7. The UK branch has been known to knock off 2 hours early for a beer)

ikr, Indians need to netflix and chill moar
Also fuck you ms
The India regions are currently available to volume licensing customers and partners with a local enrolment in India. For more information, contact your Microsoft India partner manager or account manager. The India regions will open to direct online Azure subscriptions in 2016.
I can't create a vm in the Indian data center -_-
It's 2016 @@##!!!@#

10:55 AM
@HackToHell heh, India has netflix?
WHY DO YOU PEOPLE GET COOL STUFF BEFORE US?

@JourneymanGeek it's probably have something to do with having 1 billion potential customers.
so, what this comes down to is: if you want Netflix, start procreating.

(we're getting it this year, in theory)

@tereško Err fitting 1 billion procreators into Singapore might be hard

@tereško Sounds like a win-win

They'll probably ban all procration well before coming close to that population level...
In fact, it's already one of the most densely populated countries in the world
@JourneymanGeek Just register with an Indian credit card and VPN?

11:06 AM
@qasdfdsaq its the principle of the thing

This is a list of countries and dependencies ranked by human population density and measured by the number of human inhabitants per square kilometer or square mile. == MethodologyEdit == The list includes sovereign states and self-governing dependent territories based upon the ISO standard ISO 3166-1. The list also includes but does not rank unrecognized but de facto independent countries. The figures in the following table are based on areas including inland water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, rivers). Figures used in this article are mainly based on the latest censuses and official estimates (or...
I was surprised to see Monaco at number 2 ;)
Singapore is number 3

@JourneymanGeek YOU HAVE BETTER INTERNETZ !

@HackToHell yup, which is one reason its wierd services like this are slow here

@DavidPostill the whole country is about the size of a racing track.

@qasdfdsaq I have this theory that the easiest way to prevent piracy is to make stuff available at a senseible price

11:09 AM
Monaco - 2 km2 and 37,800 people :/
50m2 per person.
@JourneymanGeek Some people will always think the sensible price is a big fat zero

@DavidPostill and easily!
I think a good example is baen books. I could download books from bitorrent or libgen (if they're up), but its actually less painful for me to buy new releases from them (at a discount) as part of a bundle

@JourneymanGeek Funny enough I agree totally
But without stupid arbitrary restrictions and drama over "Oh I'm not releasing this album on THIS service for 3 months until this OTHER service that pays me more ends their exclusivity contract"

da
or there was no way for me to get something at the quality I want.
I totally can't pay netflix, what 20-30 dollars a month to watch stuff only they show, for example
I could entirely hypothetically download series they made at 4K tho

Bob
@qasdfdsaq 25% was closer. I was looking at SU rep only
@JourneymanGeek You can enter his user ID in the textbox under the script :P
John T is at 58260 rep from upvotes on >1week old posts
Out of a total of 117687

11:47 AM
@Bob I have inconcequencial rep elsewhere ;p

12:09 PM
maaaan
I have a question I want to post an impolite close reason about

This one? ;)

Q: Making a Windows Activator

Washiul AlamToday I reinstalled my Windows 7 (Pirated :p ) and discovered that is NOT Genuine. So I have to active it with Windows 7 Activator. now I want to know how the activator works, is this possible to make a activator with Visual Studio??? Thanks

@JourneymanGeek

yuuuup

@JourneymanGeek Use one of your sock puppets ;)

@DavidPostill: tempting but no
I put it out of our misery and posted a comment

12:15 PM
@DavidPostill but but the public humiliation!

Consider it flagged ;) @JourneymanGeek

snort
the latest edit...
I have a very nice bridge for sale, very cheap, hardly used, still in its original packaging...

Yeah, I saw that. Not so believable attempt to wriggle out (but nice try) ;)

I would typically let that get roombaed but whatever ;p

Hmm. I hit "delete" and it got deleted straight away! Do I have a new super duper delete privilege? ;)

12:20 PM
naw, I hit delete at about the same time ;p

LOL. So did the OP ;)
" deleted by Washiul Alam 2 mins ago "

Three hit combo? ;p
Its not rediculously difficult to pirate software. I actually get the theory they use for modern windows 7 cracks (emulating a system preinstall) which is pretty clever

@JourneymanGeek Did you read his profile?
"Disshhhiiiaaaaa, yap??? Oh you?, how r u, oh me??? I m a programmer (I think :p). But a GAMER also :p Love Android, for "ULTA PALTA" names :p. Read in class 7, and age is 12 :p. Dishhhhhiiaaa, righf??? :p"

Oh wait
Underaged user

Is he claiming to be 12 years old?

12:22 PM
damnit skippy
I believe he is

Hehe
He also cross posted to SO.

Handled. Might take a while for someone to get to it, and I needed a reminder

I saw that ;)

lol
its not super seekrit
(and yeah, I do believe this is the first underaged user I've come across as a mod)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek typical methods are patching out the activation check, infinite rearming, and a fake KMS server
As for why I know this... call it curiosity :P

12:27 PM
;p
I finally got around to checking the HDMI ports on my crossover
All 3 are HDMI 2.0 it seems. Manual says only 1 is.

Bob
(In all seriousness I can't be bothered dealing with those hacks... Easier and a better use of my time to just pay, not to mention the whole ethics thing)

(website says all 3 are, so I suspect its a newer varient)
@Bob yeah
and unless you build a desktop or are upgrading, you're typically not buying windows seperately

even upgrading is still free right, for win 10

yup
not always true tho
I have a system that went from XP to 7 (paid upgrade) to 10
Windows 10 is unusual and MS is in a wierd situation of competing against its past self for market share.

yea I'm still happy on win7

12:36 PM
I'm almost entirely on windows 10
one system's not upgraded yet but that's cause I don't have a working monitor for it

I'm now looking into making a custom installer for win 7. With my core apps, sp1/updates and registry tweaks.
Had trouble finding a DL source for RT se7en Lite. Dev site links are broke and only softpedia seems to offer the latest version.
But I hate sites like softpedia

or w/e its called

I wonder whatever happened to the nlite guy

I also DL'd the newer NTLite
gonna test em both

12:41 PM
ahh right
(as you can tell, I've not done this in a while)

me never, I didn't know there were apps for modding an installer image
never had to re-install much

I used to strip down installs when I was younger
now I just do a stock install, update, and use a combination of ninite and manual installs to get stuff up to date

yea but that takes about a day, all the MS updating especially.

Bob
@jiggunjer WAIK
I think it's WADK now though

12:44 PM
I used to use WSUS offline update for most new installs
I just hop on another PC these days ;p

Bob
Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK), formerly Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK or WAIK), is a collection of tools and technologies produced by Microsoft designed to help deploy Microsoft Windows operating system images to target computers or to a VHD (Virtual Hard Disk). It was first introduced with Windows Vista. WAIK is a required component of Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. == History == Windows AIK Version 1.0 was released with Windows Vista. New or redesigned tools and technologies included Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM), SysPrep, ImageX, and Windows...

yea I got the latest WADK too
but I thought those GUIs like RT se7en lite were like frontends for WAIK
so why read a 10 page guide on how to slipstream with WADK when the GUI has a big round button?
I even got MDT but I doubt I'll need it.
I think it is for mass installing

1:31 PM
Typing in firefox is like typing in a remote ssh windows sigh
Why you do this lame browsers .-.

Bob
1:45 PM
norepro

norepro - but I probably have fewer tabs than @Bob ;)

;p
One nice thing about being an early adopter
I have a good chunk of UHD/ 4K 'good subjective' questions to myself

@JourneymanGeek I'm very happy with my square pixels ;) 169 upvotes and rising ...

@DavidPostill this isn't likely to be a HNQ

2:00 PM
Have you written a "canonical answer" yet?

Oh, none of these are canonical
they're very user experience centered

Q: Is it possible (and functional) to use a 4k 28" screen like 4 full hd screens?

Cyril N.I plan to buy a 4k 28" screen in order to replace my dual full-hd screen. The main reason for this is to have "more screens" in front of me. I plan to use it like if I had 4 full hd screens in front of me, meaning I will have 4 various applications opened at the same time and visible. I know th...

A: Will the pixel density difference be visible between 4K and 2K monitors at 27" size?

Journeyman GeekIMO "sort of". Its definately better and sharper, but native 4k content is pretty rare. I'm looking at a 1080p and a 2180p display right now. I do do some sort of upsampling in my video player for 720p video and it looks fine. (Would screenshots be of help here? I donno). There's a lot of disa...

I guess this comes close to canonical

'm eagerly looking forward to netflix coming here for science.
LOL

2:26 PM
;p
I couldn't have gone and said "Waited for the chinese to make 4k rips off netflix and other sources possible" could I?

Just told about shebangs to someone and he started laughing #_#

shebangs shebangs....

not you

2:42 PM
A shebang walks into a bar and asks the barkeeper "So, how is the ENVironment here?"

A shebang walks into a bar and sed "unzip, strip, touch, finger, grep, mount, fsck, more, yes, fsck, fsck, fsck, umount, sleep"

So I'm not the only one broadbandforum.co/threads/104070
Damned messed up routes between ISPs

Bob
@DavidPostill that's a very dodgy disk you have there

@Bob lol

3:26 PM
I think the number of votes doesn't make it more or less canonical.

@jiggunjer more that it covers most of the things someone would ask on a topic

I'm so canonical, my face fires cannonballs when I sneeze

@DavidPostill that's a very problematic joke

@tereško Your face is a very problematic joke

Bob
I'm stuck in TvTropes :(

3:38 PM
it happens

technically @qasdfdsaq if you fired cannonballs when you sneezed, your face would be a problematic joke for anyone in range

4:01 PM
Okay looks like foxyproxy was causing firefox to crawl
has anyone used anything else that works well ?
I want rules based proxy, essentially comapny domain -> proxy

Bob
...still norepro
Perhaps you configured a particularly intensive rule

Yeah perhaps hmm

4:16 PM
@JourneymanGeek I can see why it would be problematic, but I don't see why it would be a joke

they would be small balls?

4:46 PM
Cannonballs are not small.
A malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), also known as a check engine light, is a tell-tale to indicate malfunction of a computerized engine management system. It is found on the instrument panel of most automobiles. When illuminated, it is typically either an amber or red color. On vehicles equipped with OBD-II, the light has two stages: steady (indicating a minor fault such as a loose gas cap or failing oxygen sensor) and flashing (indicating a severe fault, that could potentially damage the catalytic converter if left uncorrected for an extended period). When the MIL is lit, the engine control unit...

@qasdfdsaq easily resettable (or diagnosable) by OBD-II

A tell-tale (or idiot light, especially in North America) is an indicator of the status or malfunction of a system within a motor vehicle. A tell-tale consists of a light bulb or an LED which lights up a symbol or text legend. The "idiot light" terminology arises from popular frustration with automakers' use of tell-tales for crucial functions which could previously be monitored by gauges, so a troublesome condition could be detected and corrected early. Such early detection of problems with, for example, engine temperature or oil pressure or charging system operation is not possible via a tell...

@qasdfdsaq suitable

@qasdfdsaq do you have a problem with your car or are you purely reading wikipedia for the sake of it?

@PatoSáinz Neither
Curious as to the reasons the check engine light is "supposed to come on for 15-60 seconds" when powering up a car.
(Though in my case, a motorcycle check engine light, that comes on for about 2-3 seconds after turning the key to "Run")

Anonymous
4:51 PM
@qasdfdsaq because there's probably a self-test on start, like a BIOS POST

I've read that it's apparently intentional, but not sure exactly why.

Anonymous

Possibly, but what would a check engine light not coming on when you start the vehicle mean?
Other than perhaps "Check check engine light"

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq I don't know if you should worry about that

Anonymous
lol

4:53 PM
> The MIL is also illuminated prior to starting the engine, along with other tell-tales on the dashboard, to demonstrate that the lamp is working and not burned out. The lamp will turn off once the car is started if no monitored faults exist. The MIL will also illuminate if the engine has been cranked but failed to start after returning the ignition to "ON."
Yeah, so it's a check check engine light check.
xD

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq I mean, it's been years since cars stopped using lamps on the dashboard

Anonymous
burning a LED is a little harder

@PatoSáinz True, but this is a cheapo third-world rental scooter.
Probably still LED, but meh.
Also the speedometer is off by 10.
But nobody even knows what the speed limits are around here, so that's not exactly a problem

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq lol, if you really are worried, it's probably not going to explode under your legs

I'm not worried, I just like to understand how things work.
That's how I managed to learn so much about computers all by myself.
