Bob
12:14 AM
My first question in over a year and it's self-answered :P

Bob
A good quarter of them are from the 2012 Win8 event/competition.

I'm wondering something
what actually determines what's the maximum resolution a video card can handle?
I mean of course, there's the outputs being a standard that supports it
but its not vram (since you can get it on integrated graphics)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You mean aside from artificial limitations set by the manufacturer?

@Bob yeah and whether that's hardware or driver based....

1:03 AM
@bwDraco Don’t know what spurred this, but will say… First take care of yourself. That said I have had some serious thinking to do myself about the culture of Stack Exchange. I have nothing but good things to say about Super User and Stack Overflow; these two major sites really have refreshed a tech “spirit” in me in new ways. But some of he smaller satellite sites here have… Issues IMHO. So in general, I’m burned with the personality stews of those sites.
@bwDraco So still will pop in Super User and Stack Overflow when the need arises and time persists, but I am seriously throttling down involvement. Heck, in the case of Super User that trend has been the case for the past few months anyway… So not fading away, but need to personally shift focuses. Nothing but respect to my Super User pals!

Bob
Heh. I apparently did that years ago.
Not much rep-chasing, answer-chasing or serious moderation here. Just answering questions I find interesting.
And browsing HNQ.

@JakeGould he's had a few problems with it in the past
I think I've felt he takes things a little too seriously sometimes.

1:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek Sounds like me in the past, but I'm still here after a long break. Not as active, but occasionally I click an answer I feel like I could give a quick answer to. Not really actively looking for questions to answer though.
Not making use of any editing or moderation privileges or tools though nowadays, except for an obvious flag or close vote.
Kinda contribute as much as I use the site, which feels about right if you don't have the time or priority to make it your life.

Bob
My answer rate dropped off sharply as I went through Uni and now work :P
Answer length (and probably quality) increased though. Average score definitely did.
Could probably graph it with SEDE data... hmm.

@JourneymanGeek Still have to respect. Also the holidays and winter make one reflect on stuff like this. So hey. Well, see you around in the future possibly. Adios!

Bob
1:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek I really want to start suggesting character names for you :P
Huh. So apparently they used this generator (or these are standard names) in the game.
"Moonshadow" indeed.

I used to know someone by that handle. She was batshit crazy
@Bob it was a super quicky charecter build!
And she was erm, named after the X-man!
My paladin's sophie grey (which is my standard first charecter)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I was more thinking the NPC, but ok :P
@JourneymanGeek Heh. I just used the same name on both characters.
Eh. You can see my terribly uncreative name choices from the Steam name.

2:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek nah, it was just a curious coincidence

Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek how have you been

Bob
@PatoSáinz Isn't that every day?

2:20 AM
@PatoSáinz alive, and apparently very unimaginative in naming my RPG chars ;p

@JourneymanGeek are you making an RPG?

naw
We were playing sword coast legends the other day
I play a halfling rogue called... rogue.

Bob
2:47 AM
lol

Balls

Yes
My 4G has stopped
Also I think I know why there's rumours the next iPhone will be waterproof
Or rather, I see why it makes sense that Apple chose the iPhone 7 as the right time to introduce waterproofing

Anonymous
3:11 AM
@qasdfdsaq why

Kale juice
Oops wrong window

Anonymous

Anonymous
because of this old meme?

Lol no.
Because they're apple, and they tend to deliberately hold back from introducing technologies that don't have the "perfect" user experience

Anonymous
heh the xperia line has perfect physical UX

3:14 AM
Basically Apple protect dumb users from themselves.

Anonymous
and they've had some hardcore waterproofing for more than a year now

Biggest problem so far? Waterproof phones don't work underwater.
Xperia waterproofing is hit and miss. Mostly miss.

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq is that even fixable? I think that's due to the very nature of capacitive touchscreens

Anonymous
also, just look at how you charge your Apple Pencil

It's fixed right now.

Anonymous
3:16 AM

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq how? source? any papers?

The latest generation of touch sensors is capable of working underwater.

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq I know resistive can, but a quick search in scholar.google.com doesn't show anything about underwater capacitive touchscreens

And I suspect apple were reluctant to release a waterproof device and then have to explain to users why they can't actually control it underwater since there's no bloody hardware buttons except home and volume
Resistive is even worse. Pressure deforming the mobile layer and all
Why would apple publish their proprietary technologies on Google scholar?

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq yes, it's awful

Anonymous
3:20 AM
@qasdfdsaq because google scholar also indexes patents

Anonymous
and propietary tech is usually registered in patents

I'll pretty sure hell will freeze over before that happens.

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq they don't have exclusive rights over a tech if they don't patent it

technically no

Anonymous
and apple already has a lot of other much more important patents registered

Anonymous
3:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek copyrights and trademarks can't protect the whole thing

In theory you could also use copyrights for some thing.
Also, I'm of the opinion patent laws are kinda broken, and need to be nuked from orbit ;p

Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek yea

Anonymous
but the thing is, most innovations are not ultrasecret (unless they come from DARPA)

Most patents arn't
They're semi trivial design details that arn't innovative in any way
and patents were meant to encourage innovation, the way many US companies use them, its more to impede competition

Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek agreed

Anonymous
3:29 AM
my point was, independent from my opinion on the patent system, that anything that apple creates is patented, even if it's some space-age technology. But yes, the patent system sucks fucking ass.

3:44 AM
Which is a result of the patent system
Since apple can use them defensively

@PatoSáinz It's not theieer hardware anyway

Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq yea but they can patent an implementation on their phone

Anonymous
Thing is, I can't seem to find any news article or paper about underwater capacitive touchscreens

Anonymous
only something about a noise filter that might help with watered touchscreens, but it's too much marketing-speak

4:01 AM
That's probably because you don't know wwhat you're looking for.

@JakeGould I'll say this: It's because DavidPostill is an owner of this room, which highlighted my issues once again.
Dec 3 '15 at 13:43, by DavidPostill
@JourneymanGeek OK. I think I'm one of the more "level-headed" posters here, so was thinking I could also help out when things get a bit heated! ;)
2016 will be the year when you'll see the biggest changes yet to my personality.
I'm brash and impulsive. This has to change.

Anonymous
@JakeGould I do miss The Comms Room being active here, that was a fine culture too

So I decided to log out and do a bit of soul searching. Why am I here on Stack Exchange? How do I fix these personality issues?
(Clippy, go away!)

@bwDraco why are you here? (I'm interested)

@JourneymanGeek It's my passion to help others.

Anonymous
4:09 AM
@bwDraco and are you questioning that?

The ramp-up in participation that began November last year caused a whole bunch of unexpected issues. I lost sight of my purpose here and instead just decided to push for the ♦.
Since the whole trademark dispute (which, as others have noted here, is probably based on meritless grounds) that forced me to change my username, this has come to an end.

I see

The issues linger nonetheless.
I probably won't be on the main site for a while but intend to remain in chat for some time.

The answer is simple: Touch him on his penis. Stumped on how to do it? Here are some fun tips on how to touch a naked man and to touch him on the penis

Bob
> doing the sex

I get banned for saying "peenus" and mentioning there's a hot slutty girl on the stairs but you guys get to talk about naked penises all day long and nobody cares...
Discrimination I tells ya, discrimination.

@qasdfdsaq oh well I'm used to the comms room where you could post an amazon onebox of a barrel of lube

Racial probably.
@PatoSáinz A barrel?!

Bob
4:38 AM
I swear I've seen this exact question a dozen times:
4
Q: Find MAC address of a remote computer using IP

a_krisIs there a way to find out a computer's MAC address if we know its IP address, assuming this computer is outside our LAN? I know we can easily get the physical address of a computer in our LAN using getmac or arp in command prompt, but these commands don't work for other remote hosts.

@PatoSáinz I suppose I could fill a bathtub with it
For some real kinky slippery fun

That's a small bathtub.

I guess I won't be doing Cisco certs for the time being due to logistical constraints. LPIC-1 is a more likely goal.

Anonymous
@bwDraco did you research about the RH certs?

I know the Red Hat certifications are more widely recognized (and RHEL/CentOS is the most widely deployed enterprise Linux distribution) but I'm more a SUSE guy because of my extensive background working with openSUSE.
I'll see what I can do. I suppose I can always set up a CentOS environment in a VM...

Anonymous
4:55 AM
@bwDraco don't worry about that, they're not that specific

(LPI certifications expect the ability to use yum, a tool I'm not all too familiar with as SUSE uses zypper for package management.)

Anonymous
also, SUSE is on the same side of the force with Fedora/Red Hat (the other side being Ubuntu/Debian etc.)

Anonymous
@bwDraco yum is deprecated and you should use dnf

Exam will probably be updated for that if that's the case.

5:35 AM
@PatoSáinz heh. amusingly someone who was a site regular requested that the barrel not be posted
cause they used the chat from work

@JourneymanGeek oh damn, regular from here?

@PatoSáinz regular there
same issues would apply here I guess

7:34 AM
O_O
I... just received the laptop screws I ordered.
The laptop screws I ordered in July.

@Bob AU customs delays?

Bob
@Boris_yo No... probably lost in transit for a bit. And then someone found it on a shelf.
Usually post from China is 2-4 weeks. Not 6 months.
And customs doesn't take that long here ... usually.

@Bob It had tracking number?

Bob
@Boris_yo Nah. Standard China airmail.

@Bob It's been cases of theft when ordering without tracking number. I always order with tracking number to avoid it.

Bob
7:43 AM
@Boris_yo They don't offer tracking on this. And it was $3 worth of screws anyway.

@Bob depends
I've had china post stuff takes ages

Bob
Something like a phone, worth hundreds? Yea, that should have tracking. But even then it's on the seller to prove the item was sent & arrived...

@Bob They don't offer free tracking number for small packages below certain amount but you can always add a few dollars to pay for tracking number.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, but all your post goes through Malaysia first, apparently :P
Come to think of it, I wonder if this ended up in Austria first.
Apparently that happens sometimes.
@Boris_yo No you can't - there's literally no other shipping option.
And China airmail tracking is largely useless anyway :\
This particular seller actually offers TNT express if I want to pay $30. Ha.
But, yea, most ebay sellers don't offer tracking at all.

8:03 AM
Austria, australia. Small difference.

@Bob Largely useless? Maybe in Australia but not where I live. Postal service offers tracking system that helps to find even lost packages or sent to wrong branch.

@Bob IIRC dx now exclusively ships through toll
and gives me tracking numbers that don't work ;p

@JourneymanGeek Toll?

@Boris_yo low budget courier ;p

Bob
8:39 AM
@Boris_yo The most it'd tell me is when the item enters the country.

hm.
I apparently need to pay fedex for sales tax for my monitor. Fine.
Only payment option? cheque

Bob
o.O

8:58 AM
@bwDraco When I referred to "Level-headed" I was thinking of a couple or three particular individuals who, at the time, were misbehaving (and not level headed). You were not one of them.

@DavidPostill and if I'd said no, you would have likely shrugged and gotten on with things ;p

@JourneymanGeek True ;)

That's what I did wrong.
I'm not letting this happen again.
5 hours ago, by bwDraco
I'm brash and impulsive. This has to change.
Have to go soon. It's 4 AM here in New York.

@Bob I'll need to talk to dad about helping me with getting a cheque, then paying him back
Its no biggie, just so darned wierd

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't think I know anyone who's touched a cheque in the last half decade.

9:09 AM
yay old people

Last time I received a cheque (first one in ten years, refund from the UK tax people) I had to ring my bank to find out how to pay it into my internet only bank account. They sent me a "paying in" book with forms in it and I had to pay it into a real bank ...

Bob
@DavidPostill Tax refunds here are just deposited straight into your nominated account...

@Bob Normally here as well. But it was a refund from the last year I paid taxes in the UK (2007?) and they paid the refund without me asking when I moved back to the UK (2015) and told them my new address. I lived in NL in between. I guess they did the right thing (very unusual for the Inland Revenue or whatever they call themselves these days) and didn't assume I still had the same bank account ...

Bob
o.O
@DavidPostill As far as it being unusual - how so?
I always thought those places were very by-the-book. They wouldn't skimp on refunding you $1 or $10,000, if they actually owed you that much.

9:25 AM
@Bob Unusual because they are famous for screwing things up, normally not in favour of the customer - overcharging, losing records, not answering the phone, etc ...

coincidence, just cashed my first cheque, heavy wallet now :D

Bob
o.O

9:41 AM
@DavidPostill Maybe they tried and it bounced?

Grrr
@bwDraco yum install X yum remove X and for everything else man yum
Also now I wish the whole internet was https
If you accidentally close chrome and relaunch while not logged in to a captive hotspot, everything gets redirected to the damn login page, effectively losing all your open tabs.
Except HTTPS ones, that just show an error prompt.

Bob
If you accidentally close FF and relaunch the unloaded tabs aren't loaded until you click on them ;)
Though there's probably a Chrome extension that does that.

Chrome half-arsedly does that
But clicking through all your tabs to see which ones aren't lost kinda breaks that too

@MichaelFrank No. I have had the same bank account they had previously paid refunds directly into for at least 20 years.

@DavidPostill Or, they were so incompetent they lost your bank details.

9:53 AM
@qasdfdsaq yum now diverts to dnf
and dnf is a load better

did not find?

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Shouldn't you log in to the captive portal first?
Before clicking through them?

@qasdfdsaq That's possible I suppose ;)

Now why would I do something sensible like that in a moment of blind panic

dnf = DaNdiFied yum

Bob
9:54 AM
lol
I'm trying to train myself to kill the process when tab restore fails.
It's only happened once, but that was painful.
(That was at work ... I really should install Tab Mix Plus there)
There's a 15-sec window where the old restore file won't be overwritten if you kill FF fast enough.

Lol
I thought you preached about how tab restore in Firefox never fails

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Heh. Once in over a thousand attempts ain't bad.
And I did manage to partially recover... lost about half a week.
That wasn't so much FF tab recovery failing as it was me failing.
...I forgot to click the restore button after launching FF from a link.
TMP helps with that at home - I have it set to auto-restore.
But, yea, apparently Chrome recently improved their tab restore too.

The once in a hundred times Chrome fails I just go through the session store and history sqlite files and pull the URLs to restore by hand.

10:11 AM
Morning

Aftermorning

so ...
how are you "build kernel modules" skills around here?
I am getting this thing: WARNING: "mtrr_add" [/usr/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/2.6.x/fglrx.ko] undefined!
which seems to be caused by fact that mtrr is being burninated out of the codebase

Warnings can often be ignored? ;p
Assuming it works?
also 2.6x?

blame AMD

lol

10:14 AM
it's "2.6 or newer"
@JourneymanGeek the build completes, but when I am loading modules I am getting:
[ 2848.332722] fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY' taints kernel.
[ 2848.332725] Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint
[ 2848.343063] fglrx: Unknown symbol mtrr_del (err 0)
[ 2848.343114] fglrx: Unknown symbol mtrr_add (err 0)

hm
at this point? I'd point you at SU or U&L ;p

which nicely match:
WARNING: "mtrr_add" [/usr/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/2.6.x/fglrx.ko] undefined!
WARNING: "mtrr_del" [/usr/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/2.6.x/fglrx.ko] undefined!
and it also intersects with: patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/510277
> The crusade to replace mtrr_add() with architecture agnostic arch_phys_wc_add() is complete, (..)
... also, @JourneymanGeek, this kinda is the SU main chatroom :P

@tereško true but at this point, you seriously want more eyes and details on it

and now I need a catchy title for a post
> "Adventures in building AMD driver" or how my skills are failing me
... or somthing like that

I actually prefer to the point titles

10:20 AM
> "Crimson does not work on Arch, help fast, it's important"

that would be better

10:57 AM
ok, made the post
I would appriciate someone taking a looks at it and checking if the post actually makes sense: superuser.com/questions/1021529/…
(with no expectation of an answer .. just a quick proof-reading)

11:15 AM

aww

@tereško "looking for methins of mtrr_add and mtrr_del?" What is methins?

"methods"
... I guess I shoud change it to "functions"

@bwDraco Completely respect your desire for self-growth. My suggestion as someone who has consciously taken the decision to self-improve like that? Don’t be too hard on yourself, but always remember to push yourself forward. Something like this does not change overnight, but your goal should be—at least in my opinion—constant striving for and achieving small, achievable goals and then gradually grow to being more ambitious as you gain more comfort.

12:38 PM

@JourneymanGeek That's an.... Interesting take on the problem...
Most of my (and the folks I know)'s endeavours have spanned using a microcontroller with a traditional digital PC interface (USB, COM, Wifi, Bluetooth, etc.)
Texas Instruments MSP432 IIRC, or occasionally an Arduino or RPi

@qasdfdsaq it is

Oh look, all the naysayers who've been insulting me cause I disagreed when they said OLED PC displays are years away...

@HackToHell the rest of it is drop bear country....

12:53 PM
@qasdfdsaq We'll find other things to insult you about... ;p

It wasn't you lot anyway
But it's also been rumoured that Apple have been buying up OLED production plants too

plants? no
they just buy up the entire runs for a few years

@JourneymanGeek And spiders !

though it would be tricky with OLEDS

So what's with OLEDs ?

12:54 PM
Yeah actual plants. And R&D facilities
Could be a load of tosh, like most Apple rumours are

considering LG's the main folk who are working on it

For large-screen TVs, yes.
Samsung are still big players in the small-screen/mobile market.

oh, yeah

The vast majority of smartphone/tablet/laptop OLEDs are Samsung displays.

I thought samsung used er,...
