@Psycogeek I hibernate all the time, and yes, my disk cache is cleared. At least mostly.
It's possible a small amount of it remains, or it's possible it's just re-cached the same amount by the time I'm past the login screen. Either way disk cache goes from 20GB before hibernation to <2GB after.

yes, I meant HNQ :P

@Bob Next HNQ on SU? That doesn't make much sense to me either

1 hour ago, by Leathe
it's one of those days it seems

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Hot Network Question.

Ah! I was thinking the diploma.

Bob
11:10 AM
The ones you see on the bottom of the right sidebar.

IT Manager? Maybe better off on SF :-P
@Bob Ah I never pay attention to the sidebars. I've been conditioned to sidebars being solely a place for obnoxious adverts

Bob
Speaking of SF, this question looks more appropriate for SF: superuser.com/questions/995828/windows-10-disable-reset-my-pc
@qasdfdsaq They're actually quite useful on SE.
HNQs tend to be interesting or amusing. Or both.

Yeah. Guess I'll start looking. As I say, my mind's just conditioned to subconsciously block out sidebars from past experience.
And/or other terrible websites

Bob
heh

Like, most of the right hand sidebar on this site: trustedreviews.com

Bob
11:12 AM
Well, whole point of a sidebar is it's supposed to be relatively unobtrusive until you need it.
Unless you're trying to use aliexpress on a phone, in which case the sidebar takes up more space than the content.

Oh oh OOOOHHHHHH
Tesla Model 3 in March 2016?! o_0
FUCK YES

Bob
uhh... that means nothing to me :S

Tesla Model 3 = Tesla's "cheap" electric car
Current models start at $80,000.

Bob
ah
how cheap is cheap?

$30,000-$50,000?
I previously thought it was due 2017.
Where I live there's a government scheme for a $75,000 interest free loan to buy electric cars, ending March 2016.

Bob
11:14 AM
@qasdfdsaq Nice. You planning to go for it?

Tesla Motors - selling cars you cannot afford to buy since 2003

Bob
@qasdfdsaq How does that compare to a more conventional car?

Yes. It's exactly what I've been hoping for - otherwise I'd have to stump up $50,000 in 3 months to buy a current model.

Bob
Say... Toyota Corolla (just a random fairly popular worldwide car)

Err, well. Free supercharging for life, zero road tax.
Excellent support (from Tesla), about 300 miles range. They say running costs is 1/3rd that of a petrol car, if you pay for electricity.

Bob
11:15 AM
@qasdfdsaq Still, wondering how the RRP compares

Ah price wise...

Bob
(i.e. how much does the above Toyota or similar cost where you are)
wouldn't make as much sense for AU unfortunately

Good question

Bob
while most of us stay in the cities, intercity trips happen now and then and that can be a considerable distance
though I guess rental cars for those trips are an option

hm. I wonder if you have to pay cartax in finland if you buy a Tesla

11:17 AM
Can't find a local price for a corolla but an Auris is $20,000

though, then again the car tax in finland is temporary
since 1958..

(But yeah, exempt from car tax here, AND $7500 government grant to buy it)

so I wouldn't be surprised if you have to pay taxes on it

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Hm. Doesn't seem to be available here, but close enough :P

The main advantage of the current Tesla Model S is the premium/exclusivity/high tech factor

Bob
11:18 AM
About 22k AUD for a base auto Corolla here.

... And performance. 0-60 in 2.8 seconds

Bob
So, yea. Tesla Model 3 would cost anywhere from 1.5x to 3x as much apparently.

@Bob So that sounds about the same (I was quoting $USD

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Actually 22k AUD is more like 16k USD these days

I dunno what their plans are for Australia, but they're expanding the supercharger network quite fast in Europe, and have most of the USA covered.

Bob
11:19 AM
@qasdfdsaq I don't think it'll be too popular here. Problem is the absolutely massive distances involved.
You'd barely make it from Sydney to Canberra on a charge, nevermind the return trip.
Sydney to Melbourne? Nooope.

@Bob That's why they put charging stations along the highways

Bob
@qasdfdsaq What's the charge:runtime ratio?

170 miles range in 30 minutes charging

Bob
Huh. Ok, that would actually work with a rest stop.

HAMMERTIME!

11:21 AM
Heh, they have south-east Australia covered already, from Melbourne to Sydney

2 supercharger stations in finland
brilliant

Bob
> 120 kW

And going up to Brisbane next year. But nothing in the rest of the country. Even china has more o_0

Bob
500A at 240V O_O
probably three-phase though

^^ And this is why there's a shortage of them in Scotland

Bob
11:22 AM
@qasdfdsaq Really? Interesting.

They've got disagreements with the power distribution companies and without their help it's rather hard to get that kind of power supply :-P

Bob
I went down to Melbourne over the last new year. Didn't notice any.
@qasdfdsaq Sounds like you'd need to run dedicated lines out there too, so even that would be a pain.

There's usually only a few per city. But they can also use goverment/council/private charging points, just not that fast.

Bob
Ahhhh in the cities/towns. Not at actual rest stops.

@qasdfdsaq: sad thing is singapore is perfect for that.

Bob
11:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek You don't even need cars in Singapore -_-

@Bob: They don't allow dogs on public transport.

@Bob If you look at the U.S. you get a better idea of their strategy

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh.

Basically, they just lined all the major highways with them

Not even in a crate.
(or cats, but who wants them anyway. And birds.)
I'm not too sure about turtles and fish.

Bob
11:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek I always thought you guys were mostly bus/train/taxi

singapore has 7516 people per square km
o.O

@Bob: Dad drives.

Bob
Similar to NYC now that I think about it

and cars are bloody pricy

@JourneymanGeek Singapore doesn't need supercharging stations
There's nothing stopping you charging it at home, and with 250-300 miles range you'd basically drive for a week in Singapore

Bob
11:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek Taxes?
Probably good with that population density though... I can't imagine that many cars in such a small area.
The gridlock would be insane o.O

@qasdfdsaq: but if you use cars for energy storage, and/or charging with large multi story carparks...
The Certificate of Entitlement or COE is the quota license received from a successful winning bid in an open bid uniform price auction which grants the legal right of the holder to register, own and use a vehicle in Singapore for a period of 10 years. When demand is high, the cost of a COE can exceed the value of the car itself. == History == On 1 May 1990, the then transportation unit of Singapore's Public Works Department (PWD) instituted a quota limit to vehicles called the COE when rising affluence in the city-state catapulted land transport network usage and previous measure to curb vehicle...
this is one reason cars are pricy.

Finland doens't have tax exemptions for EVs unfortunately

@qasdfdsaq: My car park is 5 stories tall, and shared by around a thousand apartments.

aww :(

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Still a good 360km between Goulburn and Wodonga...

11:28 AM
Still. Superchargers are intended for dealing with range anxiety on long distance trips.

Bob
That's cutting it a bit close :P

@qasdfdsaq: Oh, I mean EVs in general

Bob
So, it's a start.

I don't know where either of those places are

Bob
11:29 AM
Will definitely get better in the future, but you're still looking at up to 4 hours of charging for a one-way trip. from Syd to Melb

My uncle used to live in Goulburn
its erm
famous for its sheep.

all we know, they're 360km apart

@Bob Yeah, and the Americans apparently don't mind.
@JourneymanGeek LOL

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Looks to be the longest distance between superchargers in the Syd <=> Melb trip.

That's not too bad

11:30 AM
@qasdfdsaq: You can edit pots posts

Officially quoted range is 280 miles on the lowest model, 400 miles on the highest

Bob
You'd be making a minimum of 3 stops on the way. With only two chargers available in Euroa.
Yea, it'd work but it's still clearly in very early stages :P

They're adding three more around Woodonga this year though

Bob
@qasdfdsaq A bit of battery wear and I could see that dropping to the point where I wouldn't want to risk 360km on the lowest one though.
shrug dunno, haven't been following Tesla that closely
sounds great for city driving

11:32 AM
fill the trunk with all the batteries

It's on the map I linked earlier under the "Coming soon" tabs :-P
But I agree Australia isn't the best place for it, given the low population density
But Tesla as a company is one of the few that know what they're doing really well and are making a difference globally.
Their support is exemplary. One guy's car caught fire after he ran over a tow hitch so they offered free retrofitting of kevlar armor to all existing owners

Bob
@qasdfdsaq It can actually be a bit hard to find petrol stations on that trip, if you're the type to leave it till near-empty before refuelling.
This is one of the more common long-distance road trips too.
Longer and you might as well take a plane.

A 300-mile range EV is quite impressive on it's own, and free charging stations is a bonus. But it's probably still best for city driving or commuting
In fact I haven't the faintest clue what I'd do with one, I just want one.

Bob
lol
I'm usually on public transport.

Me too.

Bob
11:35 AM
Read a book, take a nap...

BUT I WANT ONE
We get free public transport here

I know the feeling.
0_0

Bob
@qasdfdsaq o.o

like free for everyone?
and heh. If the paypal clone hires me, I need to check out the bus route
Place is INSANELY near where I live tho
(and no, the transport companies here are for profit, and arn't what they used to be)

you live in singapore, EVERYTHING is close :P
if you say "insanely close", it should be literally nextdoor
or like, just across the street
the mainland of singapore is 26 kilometers from south to north. my commute from home to work is 13 km :P
so I travel that length once a day

11:42 AM
lol
There's far places

Dammit how do you do strikethrough

--- before and after ---

Bob
@qasdfdsaq ---strike---

derp

11:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's free if "If you're a dinosaur over 60, or are mentally retarded have a disability"
Got it, at last!

Bob
> We support a limited subset of Ghetto Chat Markdown styling in chat

I was trying to remember what Ghetto Chat Markdown was called ;p

@qasdfdsaq where do you live? :b

Ah, I was looking at the FAQs on the main site

weird new water heater uses Wi_fi, only one problem with that, there is no Power plug around water heater in this house :-( well the other problem would be not wanting to re-boot to take a shower.

11:49 AM
@Leathe Scotland

ah

0_0
How would you power the water heater without a plug?

@JourneymanGeek With WiFi!

yea microwaves :-) it is gas.

ahh
that is wierd

Bob
11:51 AM
@Psycogeek You still need electricity to light those, usually?
(ones I've seen have a gas pilot that's lit manually via electricity -- a sparker)

all the new "efficient and digital" models of even gas type want power, but the original install, and location design was for pilot light gas only.

So if the gas goes out you have to relight it manually?

@qasdfdsaq yes, it really never did, although sediment and rusting out tank is the biggest problems.

@Bob Which is why we (humans) have nice solutions such as bikes and subways. :)

the whole garage (Where it is installed) has crap for power anywhere, some kind of elite design, where the humans could afford to hire all that Power Tools type of work :-)

11:57 AM
Up late, coffee. Webcomics.
Check mail
Log into Se.
See [this](http://www.commitstrip.com/en/2015/11/03/guys-who-overdo-it-on-stackoverflow/) ....
gmm, lets make that wider

Bah. WIder but not bigger
Still need to click on it to get it readable.
Right. First some coffee, shower and maybe breakfast. Then back to jobhunting.

lol
good luck

Still waiting from Philips to see if I can started there this week. Preferably on Tuesday or earlier....
Which means that:
1) Yes, I still want that job.
2) No way I am going to finish it in time.

but it's wednesday now o.O

About 1 weeks work is 'one weeks work under normal conditions. Not when the systems are overloaded in the last week before the end of a 3 month release cycle, with queueu usually up to 6 hours '
Aye. Maybe this monday. But could be Tuesday or Wednesday.
It is Wednessday and I still have not heard anything
I do not want to seem pushy or desperate, but time is running out
A proper start would have been this Monday, making use of 14 hours per day...
Then it would have finished on time

Mmmm Philips

12:07 PM
Awell, I should not complain as long as I get the job

They've been supplying loads of mah stuffs

And I have plenty of time to finish it if I set my own goals to the next release in 3 months and a week.

do people actually go door to door to find jobs?

And I should keep my tongue in check.
No "**BEFORE** I left I told you what needed to be done and that this task needed to be transfered. I left documentation in youyr mailbox". Why TF did people not act on it.
I have done that one to get to checkmarks on a form.

@qasdfdsaq: phillips... makes stuff?
Oddball monitors maybe

12:09 PM
No experience in the job applied for. No chace of getting it.
But it allowed me to spent more time on what was a relevant option while still meeting quota
Philips makes nice stuff. They just can't sell it
Making things is one thing. Making things which people want is another
E.g. the 7 Tesla MRI scanners are great toys for research institutes. But no hospital needs them.

lol
I was thinking consumer side stuff

They make a lot of light bulbs
Oh I wouldn't mind a MRI scanner
Also - my first ever failed power supply! Yay.
Admittedly it doesn't belong to me but eh...

first?
Ever?

First! Ever!

How? 0_0
Pre-emptive replacements?

12:14 PM
Dunno.
We don't really break many PSUs at work. This is a server supply in a NAS that died though.

Granted I used to buy cheap shit

I've never bought cheap shit at home. My first ever PSU is still running in my server.
Well, first PSU I've bought separately. I had bundled PSUs with old PCs that went out with the old PC but still worked at the time.

Bob
I have cheap shitty PSUs. None have failed yet...

I have above average PSUs sitting around unused because of my own paranoia :(

lol
I don't buy shitty PSUs now cause I'm spiled by modular PSUs ;p

12:18 PM
Yeah, I upgraded my semi-modular to fully-modular recently
Y'know how everyone always blames all mysterious PC crashes on "It must be the PSU" on SU?

Oh, mine's semi modular...

Well I fell for it and tried replacing the PSU. Guess what? It wasn't the PSU! DUH

Its the lupus of computer issues?

I stuck in a fan and pointed it at the CPU socket, and it hasn't crashed since. But sometimes it goes 3-5 days without a crash anyway

oh
sounds like the cooler then?

12:19 PM
Nah, temperatures are fine and it's water-cooled
But I suspect some component around the mainboard isn't getting enough airflow without an air-cooler blowing around that area

heh
this is why I want to add a FLIR camera to my toolkit ._.

Except, all the voltage regulators are temperature regulated and nothing in that area feels hot
Yeah, my thoughts exactly!
My flatmate has been obsessing about buying a $1500 FLIR camera lately

fits into your camera? o.O

He means phone

12:22 PM
I said phone

:D

Didn't I say phone? OF COURSE I DID. (play no heed to the edit history, even if I can nuke it)
^
;p

ORLY

(the joke being I ninja edited and didn't hide the bodies edit history)

12:28 PM
You can't nuke imgur!
I hope

Oh, I can nuke the chat entry

And I'll repost it!

But while I joke about abusing power, I normally don't get caught doing it ;p

12:35 PM
Heh, as it turns out this system isn't miniITX after all
It's FlexATX
Apparently a dead derivative of microATX from 1999

dont forget that cheap azz thermal camera for android (flir also makes an add-on for iphone)
@JourneymanGeek oh, well this one you linked looks much better.

If you have an old digital camera then you might not even need that.
Many of those do register infrared and have a filter to remove that.
Remove the filter, turn off the light and take your picture.

12:52 PM
Yeah, he had a Seek Compact but returned it, apparently it's too crap

"Though it will find ghosts, I found the QUALITY of the Ghosts lacking. I was able to find ghosts of Hobos, Winos and murdered Prostitutes no problem, but when it came to finding ghosts of princesses, kings and presidents I was sorely disappointed. I give it 5 stars for technology, but only 3 on ghost hunting"

wat
