5:21 PM
hi guys

hi
im not male btw
lego worlds > minecraft

Bob
Uhm... Ok?

oh wait I am a male

Bob
Ok...

5:38 PM
@Bob lol

@RecycleBin Did you have to check ;?

@DavidPostill do you know the reasons behind chat.stackexchange.com not utilizing ssl?

@Bob get the email from OVH?

@Dave Er no. What makes you think I would ;)

tcp sequence number prediction vulnerabilities are scarrrrrrrrry

5:45 PM
@Dave Your face is scary.

@qasdfdsaq lol

@Dave I do. Chat is the lowest of low priorities for them. Their highest priority is Careers.SO. Their second highest priority is StackOverflow. Their third highest priority is Meta StackOverflow. Their fourth highest priority is the rest of the SE network. Their 1000000000000th highest priority is doing jack shit to make Chat better.

I'm used to being picked on. Although usually picked on with your mom jokes.

Mine's scarier, but hey, nothing beats a good hypocrite once in a while.
@Dave Your mom is scary.

heh
;]

5:46 PM
Woohoo £150 for three light bulbs
Fucks sake I've gone mad wasting money again

btw their 999999999999th priority (immediately in front of enhancing Chat) is to find and locate a mosquito with wing cancer and fight desperately to cure it and save its life so it can live another few hours.

About to sleep, but I must say @qasdfdsaq, your user picture triggers me
@qasdfdsaq I have post traumatic stress disorder induced by losing reputation on S.E

If i knew someone's ip address and were able to add another login of myself to anybody's profile on here.. and come in chat and talk as them? Would it make people chuckle?
:-)

@Dave Is this the real Dave speaking?

LMFAO

5:51 PM
:D

yes it is the real dave speaking, It's just i study not only networking and databases but hardcore freeking hacking of ownership security as well.
Then again I grew up on irc in infosec rooms with groups that audited softwares for vulnerabilites back when bugtraq, rootshell and a few other infosites were around. Never did anything malicious though, just educational purposes.

@GaloisintheField :(

Bob
@allquixotic what email?
Oh Google dumped it in promotions
Would've noticed on my desktop (Thunderbird) but it doesn't ping my phone

6:07 PM
what does 4h55m of downtime do to the SLA for the month? 43200 minutes in November. 295 minutes down. (43200-295) / 43200 = 99.317% uptime.
SLA on Infrastructure servers is 99.95%
(43200 - x) / 43200 = 0.9995. 43200 - x = (43200 * 0.9995) = 43178.4. x = 43200 - 43178.4 ==> their SLA implies anything more than 21.6 minutes of downtime per month is a breach of their SLA
273 minutes of "excess downtime in breach of SLA" -- with a refund of 5% per "hour of delay" -- in 4h55m there are 4 whole hours (rounding down) of delay, which means I should get a refund of 20% on my server for the month :D
however, 55 - 21 = 34, so technically they were out for more than half of the 5th hour, so I should get 25%
or 22.5% - I'd take that

Bob
7:09 PM
Oh yea, @allquixotic, seen this?
9 hours ago, by Bob
> If you have Verizon, you can get the g4 for 452 bucks. Use code lgg4save at checkout. Lg also has a $200 rebate I'd you buy it from Verizon, so that's basically $252 for a flagship OFF CONTRACT phone.
I don't know how true that is.
O_O
> Excel JavaScript API
On the other hand...
Oh god. Cross-platform VBA?
> It's amazing sometimes what people can and do use Excel for. I used to do a lot of market research. One common thread across all the product categories that I talked with people about was how much people tend to stick with the tools they know. If they can make a familiar tool work, many folks will tend to do so. You mix that tendency with Excel's broad capabilities and you can end up with some pretty elaborate workbooks. If it works for folks, who are we to judge?
Heh.
Sounds familiar.

7:29 PM
lol, no kidding

Bob
Huh, they extended the rebate.

@Bob it's tempting, but unfortunately I can't activate a G4 on FreedomPop

Bob
:\

they only support certain oldish Sprint phones for BYOD

Bob
Time for a family member to upgrade? :P
(kidding, kidding)

7:32 PM
@Bob Gah! Then we IT people have to try and figure out if it's your stupid workbook that's broken or the Excel install.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Go complain to the Excel team :P
They started that thing two hours ago. I think they're still there.

@Bob Mom has a Note 4. She says it's sufficient for her needs. She's also come to like the S Pen.

Bob
@allquixotic Is there any reason they need a carrier-specific phone?

@Bob wouldn't it be hilarious if the LG G4 didn't have the bluetooth issue and I could dump Apple less than a year after going all-in with them?

Bob
@allquixotic Thing is, I don't have the BT issue AFAICT :P

7:36 PM
@Bob They're a Sprint MVNO. Frequency bands or something. Not sure on the details
@Bob But you're in Australia. Things are different over there.
You've never actually reproduced the BT issue. Nor has Mokubai in the UK.

Bob
@allquixotic How so? Weather patterns? :P

I'm seriously thinking the BT issue is specific to US phones.

Bob
@allquixotic I don't really want to update my S4 to test, unfortunately.

@Bob Firmware tweaks made to make the FCC happy?

Bob
I did experience the BT issue with that other cheapo phone, but that one had a really slow proc.
Though... it didn't have it before I installed KitKat (via CM11).
So, yea. I reproduced with CM11.

7:38 PM
If the $39.99 LG Volt that's coming to me from FreedomPop lacks the BT issue, I'm going to throw random objects across my room. Seriously. If a crap phone is better than the last 3 flagships I've bought from 2 manufacturers...

Bob
Stock pre-KitKat was fine.

Although IT COULD BE some specific background malware service that VERIZON bundles with (all) of their specific phones...
in which case, a FreedomPop phone wouldn't have it

Bob
Any really cheap Verizon phone you could test? Or, alternatively, do they have a cooldown period (refund if you're not happy with it)?

If it's seriously a Verizon-specific firmware issue, do you think I'd be able to bring a carrier unlocked phone over to Verizon and activate it and get access to all of their features, like VoLTE?

Bob
(I'm just curious about what's actually causing this - it's probably too much trouble to bother.)

7:40 PM
@Bob They probably don't have a cooldown if you're buying in full retail as I'd have to
can't use upgrades anymore

Bob
@allquixotic I don't know... you'd have to ask them.
While we do have carriers using different frequencies here, we pretty much just have to make sure the phone supports the right bands.

anyway, I will test Bluetooth audio with my LG Volt when it arrives - that will give me a truly "non-Verizon" phone to test with
another thing to keep in mind is that FreedomPop is 100% GSM, they don't use any CDMA frequencies, so if the Bluetooth problem is related to CDMA interference, only Verizon and AT&T customers would experience it.
But then it would be software-independent
which means my iPhone would have the problem
so it's not CDMA itself, because my iPhone spews CDMA constantly and it's flawless

Bob
@allquixotic Heh, I'm actually considering helping you buy that G4.
If nothing else, you'd have an awesome camera :D

Let me read up more on the offer for the G4 to see if it's valid for people who don't want to lose their unlimited data
have to search for terms like "with 2 year contract activation"

Bob
@allquixotic Oh, that's another thing. My current SIM doesn't have LTE enabled.
I'm still waiting for my MVNO provider to finish their switch to a new network and send me a new SIM.
But we haven't even been notified directly yet, so who knows how long that'll take.

7:43 PM
@Bob Well, one commonality between all of the phones exhibiting the problem that I've owned, is that all of them have been LTE
However, the HTC Thunderbolt and the Droid Razr Maxx, despite being fully LTE phones, and the Droid Razr Maxx HD before the KitKat upgrade, never exhibited the problem

Bob
@allquixotic Might be how the radios are positioned?
Though that would have to be common to Exynos and Snapdragon.
@allquixotic Yea, the whole software upgrade thing makes LTE usage less likely to be related.

I've never tested on Exynos. The only source of knowledge I have about Exynos users with the problem is the Android bug report where people with the Galaxy S6 have complained of the same symptom

Bob
@allquixotic Huh, didn't you have an Exynos Samsung phone?

@Bob An Exynos processor has never entered my house

Bob
o.o
> Well, there is a hope or most of us having issues with skips while playing music localy from sdcard or phone memmory (not streaming).
Seems like the problem is in the kernel itself. Using Kernel Adiutor (g.play) i changed cpu governor from interactive to performance. It eats up battery a little bit faster, but so far im listening music already 4th sessions (5-6h) without single skip. Its a record since i can remember. Im running LG G4 rooted, stock rom 10E.
Ill let ya all know in few days if changing governor really fixed this bluetooth issue.
WELP.
Same guy later:
> Nope, nope...ehh it wasnt cpu governor fault. Everything is still f**** up.
Fu**** biggest mystery of Android system ever lol
Damn bluetooth
That's a different ROM too.
The SEA and TWN variants are currently on V10d (updated day before yesterday).
IIRC some US carriers are on a different stream entirely.
So V10e there isn't actually newer than V10d here.
...huh. I just noticed. G4 software version is V10d-TWN-XX (for me). LG now has a phone called the V10.

7:48 PM
Moto Droid 2 (3G EvDO), HTC Thunderbolt (first-gen LTE, pre-Snapdragon QCOM chip), Droid Razr Maxx (first-gen LTE; early Snapdragon), Droid Razr Maxx HD (second-gen LTE; Snapdragon S4; first phone with the problem after KK upgrade), Droid Maxx (third-gen LTE (AWS); Snapdragon S4; always had the problem), Galaxy S5 (LTE with carrier aggregation, Snapdragon 800, always had problem), Note 4 (LTE with carrier aggregation, Snapdragon 810, always had problem)

Bob
Interesting.

That's the entire history of my family's ownership of Android smartphones

Bob
@allquixotic Guy in issue thread mentioned turning off wifi location helped with his G4
I keep location off on my phone
hm

nah, that didn't help me.

Bob
shrug just another mystery
You might be on to something about the US.

7:55 PM
@allquixotic I think your problem is that your government is trying to insert subliminal messages in your music
And obviously they're failing because you keep noticing the gaps rather than ignoring them like a good little sheep
2

8:13 PM
I mean, I don't notice any David Cameron is a great bloke gaps in my music...

DERP

Hey @qasdfdsaq

Why are you praising David Cunteron?

I don't know what you mean, he's a sleazy politician...

Oh good
We haven't all lost our minds
I was just confused by the "great bloke" bit

8:15 PM
But they're all a bunch of coonts. He's possibly not quite as bad as some of the alternatives...

@Mokubai Politions are sleazy by definition!

The only coont worse than him is Farage
I wish Zara Larsson was sleazy

!!google Zara Larsson

Useful.

8:17 PM
Wasn't sure if I wanted her in my search history... ;)

Hmm. Read the comments ;)

Incognito ftw.

Q: How do i find a the ip address of a server in a homegroup

Jibin MathewI have a problem the I have a number of system connected to a system that acts as a server , the problem is that if this local server turns off and on restart it's IP might change for that system , Then how will the remain devices find out the new IP address of this server. I am a really new to ...

Poor guy, @DavidPostill you're confusing him!

@qasdfdsaq I'm trying my best to unconfuse him!

8:20 PM
Once you confuse, some people you can't unconfuse
Like, some things on the internet you cannot unsee

@qasdfdsaq Was that said by Confusious? ;)

Now I'm confused
So I managed to break someone else's wireless network by trying to rename it to "Jessie J's Fleshlight"

Confucius (/kənˈfjuːʃəs/; September 28, 551 – 479 BC) was a Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history. The philosophy of Confucius emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. His followers competed successfully with many other schools during the Hundred Schools of Thought era only to be suppressed in favor of the Legalists during the Qin Dynasty. Following the victory of Han over Chu after the collapse of Qin, Confucius's thoughts received official sanction and were further...

He should be called confusedicus

What's the easiest way to copy text from an ssh session?
Nevermind, figured it out.

9:15 PM
was going to say, it really depends on the ssh client you're using

And the OS you're using it on

yea

9:28 PM
oh nice apoo dubar from india just endorsed me on linked in for databases and I have NO idea who he is..

@DavidPostill Well that turned into an XY problem...

@qasdfdsaq And he rolled back the revisions to improve the question

lol
It's almost as if some people don't want to get an answer

9:45 PM
@CanadianLuke Hmm. I rolled it back to your version again. Let's see what happens ;)

Is there a limit on rollbacks or does it just end up in rollback wars?

There's a limit but I can't remember what is is. I think a mod gets flagged automatically after a certain number.
I don't think we have any SU mods in the room at the moment ...
I will flag as a dupe of @CanadianLuke's new question <evil laugh> ;)

Lol

Oh dear I can't as I already cast a VTC as unclear ... :(
Please flag as a dupe of superuser.com/questions/996130/…. We might have to wait for @CanadianLuke to accept his own answer first ...

Damn stupid idea to hardcode IP addresses so that software knows where to update itself.

10:01 PM
I agree

Oh that's what he wants to do?
Just use local discovery ffs

It's still an X/Y problem

I know it's a problem. Quite what the X or Y is I've no clue
And why is an XY problem called an XY problem anyway

I'll look for the post
720
Q: What is the XY problem?

GnomeWhat is the XY problem? When asking questions, how do I recognize when I'm falling into it? How do I avoid it? Return to FAQ index

Now I get what the X and Y stand for
Can we just troll the user into doing Z?

10:05 PM
Nah, that's not setting a good example

Maybe setting good examples just isn't my style

@qasdfdsaq Is Z running fdisk on every machine he has access to? 'Cause while that's tempting it would be a Bad Thing™

Nah. I'm mischevious, not malicious.
Something more like changing his homepage to youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ on every machine

There's lots we could tell him to do, but should we?

@qasdfdsaq Knew what the link would be, still clicked it. Gotta love that 80's vibe.
You can just feel the cheese

10:09 PM
:D
I'm trying to program my lights to react to the music and using that as a test
It's not working well :(

The f8ck?!?!?!?

@qasdfdsaq There should be documentation about how to do that

Firefox has a "this tab is making noise" button on each tab. And clicking it mutes the fsking tab!!!!
Holy hell THAT IS AWESOME!

Sweet! What version of FF are you using?

@CanadianLuke There's documentation?

10:12 PM
@CanadianLuke 42.0

Dang, Chrome's one just shows it, but doesn't mute it

Seems to work with Youtube at least

But what an obvious thing to do, crikey
That's both genius and bleeding simple at once
Guess I might be switching back to Firefox in a few versions time

Welp. Time for an update
Oooo! Ahhh!
@Mokubai What would be required to turn my question into a mega-close-as-dupe thread?

Bribery huh

10:19 PM
@CanadianLuke having a lot of questions closed as a dupe of it.... ?
That would probably work

Dang... I'll be right back, need to open 50 sock puppet accounts...

-_-

@CanadianLuke 50? Pah, lightweight.

I didn't know about the muting but I noticed the noise making

It's fully awesome!

10:28 PM
Ermm, which one is the live and which one is the neutral in an E27 socket?

It gives you a way to see which youtube tabs are wasting bandwidth

@Mokubai I just use disable youtube autoplay

Holy hell! It works on the pinned chat tabs as well! A little noise icon just appeared and then vanished!

LOL

Sorry. It's cool. I'm calm.

10:29 PM
the connectors have two giant labels on them saying "L" and "N"

should it matter? 0_0

@JourneymanGeek Yes. Touching one is far more likely to kill you than the other.
Also cheap RCDs only protect one

And I don't plan on dying today
Not to say I won't, but if I do, it will be unplanned.

10:43 PM
I mean, for a bulb
I wouldn't touch either.
(I'm leery of high voltages after the PSU incident)

Yeah the bulb doesn't care.
Just less likely to be problems for me down the line if it's wired correctly
@JourneymanGeek PSU incident? Oh do tell
Lol, there's an app to make my light bulbs simulate a thunderstorm

So, I was young and foolish. Well I might be old and foolish now but I digress. I had a PSU with a bad fan and figured I'd save a few dollars by splicing in a spare fan. Might have worked. I was doing it with a plugged in PSU. Which wouldn't have been so bad. But one of the heatsinks was live, and separated from the case by a dollop of white gunk. Touched said heatsink, got a shock, arm luckily spasmed hard, and I was sore for 3 days.

Ouch.
That said, why on earth was the heatsink live...
(And to be honest, working on mains powered electronics without unplugging them is pretty foolish, yeah)
In fact you don't usually even get heatsinks on the primary side

1) No idea. And it seperated from the case. By what seemed like silicone sealent?
2) Yes. I did say young and foolish. And it wasn't even a nice PSU

Was it solid or liquidy?

10:57 PM
solid

Could have been just glue

almost like caulk
and white
and it was all that was keeping that murderous manslaughtering deathtrap of a heatsink from the metal casing of the psu

Probably glue. Could have been there as an insulator, heat conductor, or just plain physical support

If it wasn't an insulator, anyone touching that case would have been shocked.

An amplifier I took apart once had two layers of thermal paste, separated by a thin sheet of transparent plastic as an insulator
And a metal screw going through the middle :-/

11:00 PM
lol

But hey you survived

yup
and I intend to keep surviving

Just use an RCD
Modern safety rated RCDs are so good they'll cut off the electricity so quickly you won't even feel a shock

Also common sense

Nah, RCDs work even when your common sense isn't

11:05 PM
How appropriate. ..

Well y'know. When people do the electrical equivalent of reformatting by accident.
Or when they're just drunk
Or when you have cats that like to nibble on cables

@JourneymanGeek ^^

We wouldn't ever have a cat
(for some reason my culture hates cats)

Internet... is my culture
... And Internet culture somehow has an irrational obsession over cats

I don't mind cats. I'd never tree one. But my mom would be like "ugh, they're unclean" for about 10 minutes or so.

11:17 PM
Heh.

(Then go awwww.)

They're relatively good at keeping themselves clean as far as pets go

lol
(Of course we didn't get a dog for years cause it was "too much work")

Dogs are too much work? Pah
Cats are basically dogs that clean themselevs = less work! :D
Cats also clean up their own shit
Dang I got a +1 rep from somewhere and can't tell where
Ah looks like an answer I downvoted got deleted
Heh. Well that 2-year-old question I was complaining about earlier that had 3 wrong answers with no downvotes has now gone to -1, -3 and deleted.

any pets are too cute much work

11:28 PM
Too cute? There's no such thing as too cute. That's like complaining stuff makes me too happy
My computer is too fast
My salary is too high

too cute is why we have em?
(We almost didn't have a dog. It was an accidental adoption)

Oh you had a dog?
You accidentally adopted a dog?

Accidentally

Well this is interesting. Since my chmod incident generated three comments with 9 stars each, I've not seen anything else go above 3
Making fun of me must be really popular around here

@qasdfdsaq: We have a dog
But we didn't buy him. He was left with us "temporarily". Original owner bought him without telling her husband, huge fight. Left him with us temporarily.
Dog decided he liked us more and refused to go back, and that lady didn't really care

Ell
11:37 PM
Evening folks
my funtoo is mighty broken :'(

I'm sorry. Do they have a cream for that?

Ell
I wish!

Ell
So many slot conflicts
but why >.<
paste.ubuntu.com/13108029 <-- if you fancy having nightmares tonight

@JourneymanGeek I see
I almost accidentally adopted a cat once

11:57 PM
I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.
